Nascar Daytona International Speedway Crash 28 People Injured

At least 28 people were injured in a crash at the end of a NASCAR race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday afternoon, bringing the issue of safety at racetracks back to the forefront on the eve of Sunday’s season-opening showcase, the Daytona 500.

Byron Cogdell, a spokesman at Halifax Health Medical Center, confirmed that seven people were being treated there for injuries caused by debris that flew into the stands, with two of them in critical condition, including one child.

Cogdell also said the Halifax Health Medical Center of Port Orange was treating six more of the injured, with those in stable condition. Another was being treated at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach.

The Daytona International Speedway president, Joie Chitwood, said 14 people were transported to various hospitals, with another 14 treated at an infield care center at the track.

The injuries occurred after a 12-car crash as the field approached the checkered flag at the end of a Nationwide Series race won by Tony Stewart. The No. 32 car driven by the rookie Kyle Larson went airborne in the wreck and hit the catch-fence that surrounds the track and is designed to protect fans. The entire front end of Larson’s racecar was sheared off, and debris from the car, including two tires, flew into the stands. The engine wound up in a hole in the catch-fence.

“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans,” Chitwood said. “On the incident, we responded appropriately according to our protocols and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately.

“We’re in the process of preparing the facility and will be ready to go racing tomorrow.”

There were no injuries among the 12 drivers involved in the crash, including the stars Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Brad Keselowski, the 2012 Sprint Cup champion. All were examined at the infield care center and released.

A popular New York City anchorman Rob Morrison, was arrested Sunday morning for allegedly choking his wife. Ashley Morrison, who anchors the "CBS MoneyWatch" segments, reportedly fought back as she was being assaulted, leaving her husband with a blood-streaked face in his mug shot. Rob Morrison, who works for WCBS, was arrested in 2009 for allegedly assaulting Ashley, and officers confirmed they had responded to seven other verbal disputes at the couple's residence that did not lead to arrests. "I’m angry, so angry," Ashley's mother, Martha Risk said. "This doesn’t shock me. This has gone on for 10 years." Morrison was charged with strangulation, threatening and disorderly conduct. He is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

Asteroid 2012 DA14's close shave with Earth has inspired Friday's Google doodle. The animated doodle sees the second 'g' jump out of the way just before an asteroid heads it way.
This is one of the most subtle doodles we've seen in recent times and if you spend less than a few seconds of the home page, you are unlikely to notice anything as the Google logo starts off like normal. This is in contrast to the "in your face" doodles that we see at most times, similar to the George Ferris Google doodle that we saw on Valentine's Day.
Asteroid 2012 DA14 will come closer to Earth than any previous object of its size during a Friday-night fly-by, but the space rock poses no danger to the planet, NASA has said.
"No Earth impact is possible," Donald Yeomans, an asteroid expert at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, in Pasadena, California, told the media.
At its closest approach, DA14 will be 27,300 km from Earth, about a tenth of the distance between here and the Moon. The asteroid will be traveling 27,700 kph when it careens past the Earth at around 19.40 GMT Friday, according to NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office, which has been tracking DA14 since it was discovered a year ago by scientists at La Sagra Observatory in Spain.

Though the asteroid is about 13 stories tall, it will not be visible to the naked eye.DA14 will pass inside the orbits of geosynchronous communications satellites, but far above the altitude of the International Space Station, NASA said.An asteroid the size of DA14 approaches the Earth roughly every four decades, while impacts occur at intervals of roughly 1,200 years, Yeomans said.

Mindy McCready, a country singer better known recently for her ongoing personal troubles than for her string of late-'90s hits, died Sunday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at her Arkansas home.
The Cleburne County Sheriff Marty Moss said - He received a call to the McCready home around 3:30 p.m. local time in Heber Springs, Ark., west of Memphis and north of Little Rock and later he told "Ms. McCready is deceased from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,''

In a statement, he said officers arrived on the scene at 3:58 p.m. and found McCready's body on the front porch. The case is under investigation; McCready will be transported to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for an autopsy. Moss said her family has been notified of her death.

Now, granted, this is not really a great matchup. Jordan's jump shot is likely still wet, despite age taking a few feet off his lift. And MKG is very offensively limited, especially at this point. His jumper is less silk and more "broken pile of tree bark" in terms of smoothness.
Still, that's a 50-year-old working over a 20-year-old, and that means something. Jordan still plays with the Bobcats now and then, still talks about how he can still take on guys. There's a limit. He's human, after all, but just barely. Still, with all the talk of him turning 50 and how Kobe Bryant and LeBron James are creeping up on his legacy, it's a nice reminder of Jordan's pure skill.

The early-morning blast and ensuing shock wave blew out windows on Chelyabinsk's central Lenin Street, buckled some shop fronts, rattled apartment buildings in the city center and blew out windows.A wall and roof were badly damaged at the Chelyabinsk Zinc Plant but a spokeswoman said no environmental threat resulted.One piece of meteorite broke through the ice the Cherbakul Lake near Chelyabinsk, leaving a hole several meters (yards) wide.
The region has long been a hub for the Russian military and defense industry, and it is often the site where artillery shells are decommissioned.
A local Emergencies Ministry official said meteorite storms were extremely rare and Friday's incident may have been connected with an asteroid the size of an Olympic swimming pool that was due to pass Earth.
But an astronomer at Russia's Academy of Sciences, Sergei Barabanov, cast doubt on that report and the European Space Agency said its experts had confirmed there was no link.
The regional governor in Chelyabinsk said the meteorite shower had caused more than $30 million in damage, and the Emergencies Ministry said 300 buildings had been affected.
Despite warnings not to approach any unidentified objects, some enterprising locals were hoping to cash in.
"Selling meteorite that fell on Chelyabinsk!" one prospective seller, Vladimir, said on a popular Russian auction website. He attached a picture of a black piece of stone that on Friday afternoon was priced at 1,488 roubles ($49.46).With a blinding flash and a booming shock wave, a meteor blazed across the western Siberian sky Friday and exploded with the force of 20 atomic bombs, injuring more than 1,000 people as it blasted out windows and spread panic in a city of 1 million.

While NASA estimated the meteor was only about the size of a bus and weighed an estimated 7,000 tons, the fireball it produced was dramatic. Video shot by startled residents of the city of Chelyabinsk showed its streaming contrails as it arced toward the horizon just after sunrise, looking like something from a world-ending science-fiction movie.
The largest recorded meteor strike in more than a century occurred hours before a 150-foot asteroid passed within about 17,000 miles (28,000 kilometers) of Earth. The European Space Agency said its experts had determined there was no connection between the asteroid and the Russian meteor – just cosmic coincidence.
The meteor above western Siberia entered the Earth's atmosphere about 9:20 a.m. local time (10:20 p.m. EST Thursday) at a hypersonic speed of at least 33,000 mph (54,000 kph) and shattered into pieces about 30-50 kilometers (18 to 32 miles) high, the Russian Academy of Sciences said. NASA estimated its speed at about 40,000 mph, said it exploded about 12 to 15 miles high, released 300 to 500 kilotons of energy and left a trail 300 miles long.
"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening," said Sergey Hametov of Chelyabinsk, about 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow in the Ural Mountains.
"We saw a big burst of light, then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud, thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.
The shock wave blew in an estimated 100,000 square meters (more than 1 million square feet) of glass, according to city officials, who said 3,000 buildings in Chelyabinsk were damaged. At a zinc factory, part of the roof collapsed.

On Wednesday, Star magazine published bikini photos of the four-months-pregnant Duchess of Cambridge frolicking with Prince William on the beach in Mustique --- the first glimpse of her bare bump!

The tabloid’s accompanying headline claims “Kate Shows Off Her Bump!” – but she clearly had no idea she was being secretly photographed.
And just like the previous time she and her husband were secretly snapped on the beach (when she was topless!), these new photos were obviously shot with a long lens, evidenced by how super grainy they are.
Regardless of their quality, the Palace is understandably upset.
In a statement, the royal family expressed that they are “disappointed that photographs of the Duke and Duchess on a private holiday look likely to be published overseas. This is a clear breach of the couple's right to privacy."
The photos in question first came to light thanks to Italian magazine Chi, which also has them splashed across their latest cover, with the headline, “Your belly grows!” Editor Alfonso Signorini defended their decision to publish them, telling the BBC: "They are images of such unexceptional normality that there is only limited mention of them on the cover of the magazine. The photographs, which can in no way be considered scandalous, were bought from an international photo agency, do not harm the image of the protagonists and the reaction of the media seems to me wholly over the top."
Australia’s Women’s Day also reportedly shelled out $150,000 for the set. The magazine’s Fiona Connolly told the Telegraph, “In this instance they are a beautiful set of photos.”
