We are so glad you found us! You are always “Welcome Home” at The Roost.

We are a small veteran owned, family run USDA farm on Daufuskie Island. We raise laying hens and are learning to practice regenerative agriculture. We envision greater self sufficiency, sustainability and affordable healthy options for our family and yours.

We sell hand gathered eggs and have begun to offer some produce. Many visitors stop to see our garden and meet our rescue animals.

Here at the Roost we care for the animals and the environment. We are learning through Clemson and The South Carolina New and Beginning Farmer Program to avoid the use of pesticides and chemicals on our property. We feed our hens an organic diet and our animals receive regular veterinary care.

Everything we do at The Roost is with love and intention. This is our home and our rescues forever home. We hope to convey that feeling to everyone we meet.

•Daufuskie Island Ferry Service regular tickets – $17.50 one-way; $35 round-trip. Children 5 and under free. Includes cargo service. Tickets may be purchased online at Daufuskie Island Ferry

•Daufuskie Island Ferry Service Bulk tickets – $25 round-trip with prepaid purchase of 200 or more tickets.

•Freight that requires a 4’ x 6’ trailer – $40.

Oh, how nice it would be to just be able to turn your back on reality and get away for a few days…right?

It’s not as tough as it sounds if you live in the Palmetto State. There are so many great South Carolina locations where you can drive a short distance to get away from it all and just chill. Here are some great islands in South Carolina where you can make that happen.

1. Kiawah Island

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island is currently ranked in the top 10 most difficult courses in the U.S. If golf isn't your cup of tea, don't worry. There are plenty of things to keep you occupied on Kiawah - or not...

2. Fripp Island

This barrier island is known mostly as a resort so it's perfect for a getaway. They cater to guests all the time! You might recognize some of the spots here if you're an avid fan of the movie "Forrest Gump." Vacation rentals are aplenty on South Carolina's Fripp Island.

3. Hunting Island

Hunting Island's most well known landmark is the beloved Hunting Island Light. But there are plenty of things to do in South Carolina's most visited State Park, like camp, spend the day at the beach and hike.

4. Edisto Island

This is the road to Botany Bay. Yes, it's real and it really looks this dreamy. Edisto Island is very down-to-earth...but be careful...you might not want to leave.

5. St Helena Island

St Helena Island has a great traditional gullah flair. It's a laid back place where you're certain to feel relaxed. Visit the ruins of the Chapel of Ease while you're there.

6. Daufuskie Island

Quiet little Daufuskie Island is mostly residential but there are a couple of resorts where you can hide away for some R&R. Daufuskie is the island immediately south of Hilton Head Island so you won't be too far away from some great restaurants and night life.

7. Folly Beach

A little farther north of Daufuskie you'll find the hopping island of Folly, known by most as Folly Beach. Folly is laid back and unassuming and hits the spot if you're looking to get away from it all and still feel connected to civilization.

8. Isle of Palms

Want to see Charleston and spend some time at the beach? This is a great place to make that dream come true. The Isle of Palms is only a stone's throw from Charleston's famous historic district.

9. Sullivan’s Island

Sullivan's Island is separated from mainland America by a two-lane land bridge and the Intracoastal waterway. Visit Fort Moultrie used during the Civil War and others following it. Or just find your peaceful spot on the beach and soak up some great South Carolina sun.

Whatever your desire, you can find it on one of South Carolina’s great islands. From peace and solitude to great restaurants and fun beach locations it’s all awaiting you here in your home state.

Wine and Woodworks Open for Business

It all started 12 years ago with a visit to a small coffee shop in Connecticut. Mike Loftus, owner of Daufuskie Island Wine and Woodworks explains, “My kids and I answered an ad placed there for a kayak building class. It took about four months of sneaking off after school and on Saturdays, but on Christmas we all surprised my wife, Joanne with a 17 foot wooden kayak.”

He was immediately hooked on woodworking and more specifically on wooden boat building.
“In the years since, I tried to learn as much as I could about building things with wood,” Loftus says. “Three summers ago I convinced Bill Greenwood to take a two week course at the Wooden Boat School on the coast of Maine and we both really enjoyed it.”

With plans to retire on Daufuskie, he and Joanne began thinking about building a woodworking shop 5 years ago. They later came up with the idea of selling wine and beer out of the shop.
“We have always enjoyed finding good wine at reasonable prices,” Loftus says. “In recent years we have looked for wines made from organically grown grapes, usually from small vineyards. The recent surge in our country of small craft breweries fit right in to our ‘sweet spot.’ ”

“We began searching for a company that could design a barn for us made from sustainable wood in a post and beam design and found what we wanted in the New England Barn Company based in northern CT,” Loftus continues. “What we have now is a very cool building where I can teach local people how to build some really neat small wooden boats and have some fun selling interesting wines and craft beers.”

WWkayakscloseLoftus is still trying to figure out what the hours of operation for the Wine and Woodworks will be, but he is currently there most days from around 10:30am to 4:00pm.

“Four people are already signed up to start building their own kayaks in early December and all four should have them ready to go in the water next Spring,” Loftus says. But theirs will not be the first vessels produced there. “My son Matt had the honor of building the first boat to leave the wood shop. While spending two weeks with us early last summer, he built a beautiful 9 foot wooden surfboard with the words ‘Marry Me Kristina’ painted on the bottom. She said yes!”
As for the wine shop side of the barn, Loftus says, “We have a great selection and are currently dealing with two wine suppliers who specialize in the types of wines we like, along with a craft beer supplier who deals with many of the southern small craft beer makers in the Carolinas and Georgia. Thus far we are carrying wines that range in price from $10 to $40 per bottle and beers ranging from $10 to $18 for a six pack along with some large format beers. After I finish building out the wine shop, we will carry some more expensive items for special occasions.” While still insisting on quality, when possible, Loftus hopes to accommodate special orders if they are requested.

These days he continues to be busy finishing both the woodworking and wine shops. He hopes to get an email list going soon to update customers.

Says Loftus, “Come on by and check it all out. I’m pretty sure you will like what you see!”

Melrose on the Beach is getting a brand new management team to breath new life back into a great resort. The investor/owner group released this statement. As we continue to bring Melrose Resort back to its status as one of the finest resorts on the east coast, a major objective has been to partner with an established resort operations company. With great pleasure we announce our partnership with Century Resorts, a subsidiary of Century Golf Partners located in Dallas,Texas. Century Resorts will be responsible for all operations related to Melrose Resort including golf, food and beverage, and beach club operations. We are confident this collaboration will facilitate our efforts to help Melrose reach its full potential.

The Century Resorts Melrose Management Team will be led by Gary Rosenberg. Gary is a principal at Century Resorts and has over 40 years experience in the hospitality and development business in world-class resorts. Formerly the COO of ClubCorp Resorts, Gary is no stranger to Melrose. During ClubCorp's previous ownership of the resort, one of his responsibilities was overseeing Melrose and Bloody Point. Ken Crow of Century Resorts will also be joining the Melrose Management Team. Ken has over 35 years experience in the resort and club business. During his tenure at ClubCorps Resorts, he spent three years at Daufuskie as the Director of Club Operations.
