Heroes for More than One Season

This is about writing a series of novels.

Think about your favorite fiction hero. Why do you admire that character? Would you have admired him as much if he only showed up in one book? In Scintilla, I admire Klocards more than I do Mondennio, the latter being the main character. Klocards, in fact, is David Bophendze, a character central to the entire Pax Imperium Terradoma series. It's unfortunate that book four was the first of the five-book series to be published. When you read the earlier ones, you'll understand why. Bophendze is committed to duty, to family and the Imperial Postal Marines.

Rather than say a lot about Scintilla or Bophendze, I wanted to talk to my fellow newbie authors about writing. Short stories are sprints. Novels are marathons. Series novels are triathlons. In the novel-writing world, writing a series is the normal thing—one-off novels are less common. So, let me offer a few suggestions as you plan your novel, series and writing career.

When Friends Take a Turn for the Worse

Have you ever known somebody who turned out to be somebody else? Come to rely on that person, that go-to person, only to find out he had feet of clay? Sometimes that friend was never your friend, they were just setting you up for their advantage. I'm going to talk about a friend who did not betray me, but he let me down because I thought he was better than that. I'll call him Daniel for anonymity. This is his true story.

A Little About the Imperium Series

It took me a while to regain my momentum, but Scintilla has gone through its revision. Scintilla is a Sci-Fi novel about three cultures in collision. On one hand, you have the mighty Imperium. You also have the backwater world of Copa, with its aristocrats and peasants. Its fundamental question is about freedom.

Questions about the Domino Project

Yesterday I brought up the Domino Project. Today, I'll answer a few questions I think an author would ask.

Adopt the Domino Project for Your Novels

Well-known Seth Godin has proposed the Domino Project for aspiring self-published novelists to get into the market. He presents a compelling argument, and I plan to follow it. I decided to follow the basic tenants before, but he published his idea, so I'd rather tout his suggestion.

A Scrivened Recantation

Just a few days ago, I posted that Scrivener was not ready for the self-publisher. Providentially for me, I posted a link to the article to the Scrivener forum. As a result, I learned not only to eat crow, but also how Scrivener is ready for the self-publisher.
