I manage my life. There is not an exact formula or organized method that I use. I did not learn how to do it from a self help book. But there is definitely some serious life management going on. More than anything, I consistently set goals for myself. I also sporadically journal about anything and everything that comes into my mind involving major events in my life: Business events, relationships, travel, family.

Starting Branded Evolution has been one of the most rewarding challenges that I have embarked on thus far. I am 31–living in one of the biggest, fastest moving cities in the world, developing a business, and enjoying every second of this ride. My goal with regards to BE (Which is how I will refer to Branded Evolution from now on) is ironically, to “be”. I need to make a million different decisions every day that could effect my future and the future of my partners. But instead of stressing about what “could happen” or “what might happen”, I am choosing to be present with what “is” happening. Not to say that we are not doing our best to forecast the future, or learn from our past mistakes–but you can still do this while “being” present.

Today was a beautiful day in New York. I woke up a fair bit hungover after seeing “Hysterical Psycho” (It was a hilarious horror film that will make millions of stoners around the world smile) at the Tribeca Film Festival last night. After shaking out the initial cobwebs this morning I walked out to 1st Avenue, got a cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee, and then walked to “the Oval”–the park in the middle of Stuyvesent Town–where I live. It was beautiful out and I sat there on a park bench for at least an hour. I watched the squirrels and wondered why they they do not eat out of the garbage cans more often. I watched hundreds of people pass by. I sat next to a guy that had a very long and detailed conversation with his dog (the dog actually looked interested). I also took in the fact that it is “FINALLY” spring.

I was truly present for that entire hour.

And guess what, it was and incredible experience even with a slight hangover. I take this same approach with my business. What use is worrying or stressing? It is simply not productive. It effects your sleep. Your friends and family can feel your stress. Its just all around “no bueno” for the mind, body, and the spirit.

I have made a conscious choice to be present through good times and hard times. The major life lesson that I learned from my “first” world trip (South America, North America, Africa in 2007 and 2008) was simply to live life in the moment. I lived in this manner for 2 straight years: I climbed mountains, and rode on terrible buses, and learned a new language, and scuba dived, and drank beers with people from every walk of life. I was in the moment for two years straight. I cannot go back to what it was like before that. Its not a possibility for me. My life has changed.

I personally do not feel that there is a need for stress. Putting pressure on yourself to accomplish your goals is healthy. But, worrying about a million scenarios that “might” happen is just the opposite. The human imagination can be a beautiful thing–but for many of us can be extremely destructive.

I think it all revolves around a choice. I can choose to enjoy the fact that I am typing on my Mac at 12:02am on a Saturday night listening to Radiohead. I can be present with my surroundings–and enjoy my giant glass of New York City tap water. Or, I can choose to think about how I haven’t wrote a blog post in almost a month, or that I am a total nerd for writing a blog posts on a Saturday night, or I can worry about a press release that we are sending out this week.

My “choice” is to enjoy every second of this crazy ride of a life as it is the only one I am going to get.

———————————————————————————————-

My good friend David Romenelli and I have a very similar approach to life and he just happened to write a hilariously awesome book about it. I loved it and think you should check it out as well. Click here: Yeah Dave’s Guide to Living in the Moment.

From my new apartment in Stuyvesant town in the East Village/Union Square area of Manhattan–I have a view of the Empire State Building. For me this is way up there on the list of life goals. I have always wanted to live in New York City– and now my life is centered in the heart of the beast. Now, don’t get me wrong, I loved my last 11 months in Park Slope. Running and BBQ-ing in Prospect Park, living-partying-meditating with Pat and Wendy, and reviving my extremely poor Spanish with all of the shop keepers in the neighborhood made living in Brooklyn fantastic. I am so glad I lived there.

But living in Manhattan is a whole new ballgame. I mean, this is one of the most important if not the most important city in the entire world, right?

So, Stuyvesant town–where I live–has 25,000 other people living in the same complex. From the outside the red brick buildings look like a cross between a college campus and “the projects”. However, the places are nicely renovated and insanely spacious for Manhattan. The complex was built in the early 1950’s to house veterans returning from World War 2. Some of the initial tenants still live here. The are very, very ancient and living under very, very rent controlled terms.

The Empire State Building came into play yet again last weekend when returning home from the bars I decided to check out the view from our roof. This did not go down quite like I planned when the doors locked behind me and left me stranded–albeit with a beautiful view–12 floors up at 2:30 AM in the morning. Thank God I had my cell phone and that my roommate/business partner Mike is a light sleeper.

In 2006, this entire complex was sold for 5.4 Billion dollars and was the biggest real estate deal in the history of the United States. The new owners, Tishman-Speyer planted hundreds of trees and completely renovated most of the apartments. They also put in a boatload of amenities including a health club, lounge, library, and daycare. Unfortunately for Tishman-Speyer, 2006 was not exactly the best year to buy real estate. We ended up getting our place for a steal compared to what they were getting this time last year.

The owners have not had much good will from the former tenants as they have been campaigning to kick out many of the rent controlled people that live here. In fact, they just lost a major lawsuit and its making large waves in NYC.

The New York City real estate market is hurt up in a really bad way. When we were looking for places there were literally deals around every corner. Many of the companies and brokers we talked to were offering 1-2 months free rent. Thousands of jobs in finance, real estate, and advertising have been lost in NYC in the last 6 months. Unfortunately, many of the people that have lost their jobs have been forced to up and move out of the city.

Yes, we are living in wild and scary times. But, somehow I feel very confident and extremely at ease.

Mike, the rest of the crew (there are 7 of us in total), and I are working all the time–but loving where we are and what we are doing. Yes, it is a crazy time to start a business. But, I have a really positive feeling about everything we are up to and getting into. I feel very strongly that we are in the right place–at the right time. We launch our first Branded Entertainment campaign under the Branded Evolution name this week.

I am now going to walk over to my window and stare blankly at the Empire State Building–and think a bit more about how glad I am I didn’t get stuck on the roof that night.

—————

Note before reading: I do actually have some semblance of how the English language works. The following post is my attempt to write my to-do-list in a slow, deliberate, sing-songy Southern accent.

————————————————————————————–

Got to write those contracts. Got to run that six miles with John Wynn around Prospect Park. Need to put that application in for the New York Marathon–its a lottery to get in you know and 26.2 miles long.

Got to go that fancy gym and work out with Gino: Maybe we’ll see Aaron Neville pumping iron or John Legend singing while he’s on the treadmill or Sean Lennon on the elliptical. Need to firm up those employee contracts–now that there are 6 of us we better get official-like. Need to get Pat and Wendy to take me to the Park Slope food co-op so we can buy that delicious produce. The cupboard is bare and we need those blueberries.

Need to finally finalize that logo. Need to buy those desks, and a table, and some white boards. Need to get those clients RETAINED. Got to fuel my addiction to Madmen and finish off season 2. Website copy–oh I hate website copy, but need to finish writing that stat.

Need to plan that launch party, and a weekend in those woods. Need to suck it on up, and call that TAXXMAN and get those taxes done. Need to start writing that Branded Evolution blog–all about that new media stuff and this online video thing and that funny Branded Entertainment business. Need to tell people about the way advertising is going to work from now on in this world. Have to secure that guest blogging spot on that fine internet publication to boost that credibility and share a little insight from the trenches.

Need to finish Anthony Bourdain’s book and buy that David Ogilvy biography. Need to move to Sty-town where all those 83 year old World War 2 vets live side by side with 25 year old Hipsters and 40 year old Yuppies. Need to get proposal after proposal after proposal out there and CLOSE EM. Have to plan another trip out to that oh-so-important left coast to meet those important people and tell them about what we do and how we can help them. And, post some good tweets. Got to post the tweets. Lots of em. And I need to make sure I answer all those comments from all those Facebook friends that I have been neglecting.

I need to figure out how to tell Pat that I sort of kind of ripped off one of his best poems to write this post.

But more than anything, I need to inspire my team to win bigger and dream bigger than they have ever have before. We need to grab that bull by the horns and own this new market in this new world of advertising. Need to make sure everyone knows the name Branded Evolution. Need to make sure those parents know just how much I appreciate and love them and could never do any of this without them. And I need to do that meditation. Everyday. For 10 minutes a day I need to breathe, stay in the moment, and remember how lucky I am to be alive–still traveling, on a different kind of journey.

I am in L.A through the end of the month meeting with business partners, talent agencies, product placement firms, software companies, and other miscellaneous industry peeps. I could not have been more excited to trade the freezing cold northeast (5 degrees) for the amazingly temperate “City of Angels” (80 degrees).

The beginning of the flight was fairly textbook: I had an open seat next to me so I could stretch out, I finished my book, I watched a few episodes of Madmen on my laptop, I read the front page of the NY Times, and slept a bit. Aside from the fact that JetBlue does not serve meals and I was forced to eat 6 bags of Cheetos “munchy-mix” to avoid starvation, it was pretty much perfect.

About halfway through the trip I was flipping through the Direct TV channels and saw the footage of the US Air Flight 1549 crash in the Hudson River. I looked around and saw that a great deal of the passengers on my plane were already watching. Apparently I was the last to find out as prior to that I was hypnotized by Ravens-Steelers coverage on ESPN. At this point in time we must have been over Kansas or Missouri or Oklahoma or Indiana or Iowa or Nebraska…

TOTALLY SURREAL! We took off from the exact same city and in the exact same freezing cold weather as Flight 1549. There was a low whisper throughout the cabin, as I was talking to the woman next to me and the guy across the aisle. We were all flipping from CNN, to Fox News, to local channel 5, to MSNBC, looking for some sort of break in the news. We just wanted to find out if anyone got out of the plane alive. After about an hour of channel surfing, we heard that everyone on the flight miraculously survived the impact. We also found out that the probable cause of the crash was a flock of Canadian geese!

Sidenote: I loath Canadian geese–always have, always will. Hunters should have free reign to exterminate the species. They shit all over the golf course, hiss at you if you get too close, and apparently cause planes to crash into icy rivers.

But DAMN this sort of thing really makes you think.

I have lived my life over the past few years in a very “present” state. I have said on many occasions that, “I could walk out into the street tomorrow and get hit by a bus, so I am going to live it up today!”

When something like this happens–even though I was not directly involved–it really hammers that point home for me.

Those 155 people that smashed into the freezing cold Hudson River today have been given a miraculous gift. They are going to go home tonight and look at their loved ones, their lives, and their perceived problems in a whole new light. We bystanders can also take much from this experience…

Maybe it hit me a little harder because I was actually in the air–flying out of the same city when this happened. The truth of the matter is that life is impermanent, and personally, I think we should be living our lives with this in mind everyday. I am going to continue taking risks, living my life to its fullest, and dreaming big. Because, shit, tomorrow a flock of F-ing Canadian geese could fly out in front of my Boeing 747, and who knows if I will be as lucky as the passengers on US Air Flight 1549.

Thanks to all of my friends for the Facebook and Twitter messages when the plane went down.

If you have a thought, please comment below!

And if you like what you have read on this site, I’d love it if you’d subscribe : )

Social media has become such an important part of my life that I figured now would be a good time to share some of my thoughts on the matter.

I guess it has been about 4 months since I started using Twitter and have found it to be one of the most important tools in my business life. Through Twitter, I have been able to connect easily with very busy, uncannily successful people in my line of work. Twitter works in 140 character messages.

You follow people. People follow you. You share links. You read links that people share with you. It is real time and most of the time I find out about breaking news through links and posts that my twitter friends send out.

Here is an example of a tweet I sent out last night:

“Im wearing my #92 Haloti Ngata Jersey out tonight… RAVENS IN THE AFC CHAMPIONSHIP”

Everyone that follows me now knows I am from Baltimore and that I love the Ravens. I read similar posts from the people that I follow and learn more about them. The next time I meet in person with my contact- we know alot more about each other. For example, I just found out that one of my new business connections is a Steelers fan. Now for the next week we can talk trash and possibly wager on the game–growing the relationship.

People ask me quite a bit why they should use Twitter as opposed to “Facebook” or “Myspace”. Personally I have given up on the ad and spam heavy Myspace completely. I do not check it at all. My page Myspace page instructs people to connect with me through my Twitter Page or Facebook page. I hate Myspace. I just completely HATE IT.

I personally am a fan of the Facebook/ Twitter combo. Together they are powerful. Facebook serves as a realtime personal rolodex in which I can keep track of my 612 friends and acquaintances. It provides a platform to keep in touch with friends that 10 years ago would have been lost along the way. For me personally I have been able to reengage childhood friends, high school buddies, long lost fraternity brothers, old co-workers, and the many good people that I met traveling through South America.

I recently reconnected with one of my best friends in high school, a girl named Tara Tutt that I hadn’t heard from in years. Through Facebook I found out that she is living in Atlanta, happily married, with a baby girl. We have emailed through Facebook back and forth a few times. To me this is very cool. I have also established an ongoing dialog with a second cousin of mine that lives in Arkansas that I haven’t seen since I was 9–almost 21 years ago. So, that is Facebook to me. It also gives me a chance to syndicate my blog posts to my friend list. Most likely some of you reading this right now are doing so because you clicked on a link on your Facebook news stream.

Now Twitter is also a social networking tool but there are some major differences. Facebook helps you stay connected to acquaintances, friends, travel companions, family, etc. Facebook gives you the opportunity to share links, videos, stories, etc with your existing network. Now Twitter allows you to do all of this as well, but also gives you the opportunity to expand and grow completely new relationships from the ground up.

On any given day in my life I meet with ad executives, production companies, actor/actress’, writers, and venture capitalists. By simply exchanging twitter names I am given access to the daily thoughts and musings of these important new contacts and they are given access to mine. After reading daily 140 character accounts of what is going in the lives of my new contacts and through interacting with them these relationships develop in a very natural way. Lots of times my business can help these new contacts and lots of times they can help me. It is really a beautiful networking tool– and one of the most powerful items in my bag of tricks.

If you do not yet have a Facebook account. Sign up this very second. Its mainstream people. Its not going away. It will be around for the rest of your life. Stop saying that you do not have time. You do. You can spend 15 minutes a week on Facebook.

Twitter takes a big more time to “get”. I would say it takes about a month for most people to figure out its power.

Here are my tips for getting off to the best start using twitter:

1. Sign up for an account. Add a picture. Write a brief description of who you are and what you do.

2. Download TWEETDECK. It allows you to easily sort the people that you are following. It also makes it easier to communicate back and forth with other twitter-ers.

3. Follow me if you like. Then go to the people that I am following or other friends you might have already on Twitter and start following people. Many of these people will start following you back and you are off to the races.

Here are some people you can follow to get started:

Shaq - He is hilarious. Plus, he’s Shaq. How cool is that you can follow Shaq’s daily thoughts.

Bob Carter- My good friend and SEO expert who is getting ready to backpack through South America. He intends to blog and twitter along the way. I wish Twitter was around when I was traveling.

Mike Cerrone- My business partner and Burning Man compadre who is getting ready to move to New York City.

John Brennan- Branded Evolution’s CTO. He is also a world traveler with quite a bit of insight on the IT world.

Jessica Zyontz- Voice talented extraordinaire and Branded Evolution employee number 3!

Savvy Auntie- My company is going to be working to generate revenue for SavvyAuntie.com. A niche website for Aunts without children that is BLOWING UP : )

4. Keep Twitter and Tweetdeck open on your desktop and check in a few moments a day. Try to post two or three tweets a day. You don’t need to post “I am eating a delicious breakfast” every morning- although you can if you want to. If you read an article on New York Times.com and you think its good. Share the link. On twitter you can actually track how many people read your links through a service called Bud URL.

5. If you have and iPhone, g-phone, or Blackberry Download Twitterific so that you can tweet from your mobile phone. The other day I ran into Michael Jordan on the streets of New York and tweeted it from my iPhone immediately.

Sidenote: It was very cool to run into a living sports legend. I love New York City.

6. Don’t quit. Its going to be a month before you start to “get it”. Keep it open on your desktop and keep posting.

So, I am just about finished this post. After I am done I am going to share it on Facebook and post it on Twitter. My 612 friends on Facebook will all see the link posted on their news feed. Many of them will click and read this post. I will post it on Twitter as well. Sending the link out to my 243 followers–giving them a chance to find out what I am all about through this website. Maybe they’ll like what I have to say and have similar travel experiences, maybe they won’t. But, I am pretty sure that my blog readership will grow along with my social influence.
THIS IS POWERFUL STUFF!

I have been thinking a lot lately about my personal development: Where I have been, where I am presently, and where I am going.

I have decided to work this all out in my head in computer software terms–as I am clearly becoming a nerd.

Dave Ford 1.0-(Ages 22-28) Buying a house in Baltimore, working for huge media companies (Hearst, Clear Channel), getting introduced to meditation, reading more books about business and travel that you could imagine, and finding success in the conventional world

Dave Ford 2.0-(Ages 28-30) Making the decision to travel the world and reaping the rewards. Making a slew of friends from Australia, England, Ireland, Argentina, and Tanzania. I broadened my horizons through my Ayahuasca ceremonies, visiting communist Cuba, learning about global warming in Antarctica, and living presently in the desert for a week at Burning Man. I have been introduced to new cultures, languages, rituals, and ways of life. I taught myself how to write and how to use social media while traveling. Moreover, I have realized that living unconventionally is a powerful way to live. And, as a result of all of this, have decided to continue to live life in this manner.

The cost of these experiences and what it took to get to this point was not cheap. I spent about $60,000 dollars over the course of those 18 months. I can easily justify the cost as an education expense. I learned far more than I would have ever learned by applying that same amount of money to any sort of formal schooling. My Antarctica trip was about 5K, climbing Kilimanjaro was close to 7K, Cuba was 3, Galapagos 4, etc.. It all adds up pretty quickly. Nonetheless, this all leads into how I am personally developing now.

Dave Ford 3.0-(Presently almost 31) Currently the challenge I face is to build a successful business from scratch. The challenge is massive but extremely exhilarating. The idea of being completely in control of my own destiny is the way I want to live forever. If “Branded Evolution” succeeds, its because of my efforts. If it doesn’t, well, let’s just say that I think it is going to succeed.

I have been able to even out what was at first a roller coaster ride full of “high-highs” and “low lows” by rededicating myself to a daily meditation practice. Meditation has become a staple of my life. I have joined a meditation center in New York and make a point to sit for a least 10 minutes every day. I can not stress enough how well this regular practice works. Little things just do not matter as much. Stress–in what would be considered an extremely stressful time in my life– does not exist. So, I am working as hard as I ever have–but enjoying the challenge. On top of all this I have been able to dedicate myself to getting in shape. I have been in the gym 3-4 times a week for the last 12 months and find myself in the best shape I have been in since I played basketball in college. I am also reading and learning every day.

But, I think the most important lesson that this experience has taught me thus far–and I think the hard work, meditation, and dedication to being healthy are a big part– is to simply live life consciously and presently. For me the most important personal achievement has been my “very new” attitude towards spending money. I think it is safe to say that I have been unconscious with regards to money throughout my life. Right now, I have everything invested in “Branded Evolution”. So the extra spending money is simply not there. I have had to insert a discipline in my life that was never present before. I am actually teaching myself how to cook and find myself enjoying it (I used to loath the idea of cooking).

The crazy thing is that I would have never realized this new way of looking at money if I would not have made the decisions to 1) spend so much money in the first place while not working for so long, and 2) start my own business. If I went back to work for a big media company I would be making great money–but blowing it as usual.

Although this new stage of my life means that many of my travel plans and goals are now on hold while I build this business–it does not mean that they will not be achieved in a period I am looking forward to greatly: Dave Ford 4.0

Anyway, thats where I am with regards to my own personal development. Where are you with regards to “your” personal development. Comment or email me at DaveFord88 [at] gmail [dot] com.

After blogging for almost two years straight–it has become fairly obvious that I have become a enormous slacker in the last 6 months. There are many reasons for this. But, excuses are not my forte.

Here is a quick synopsys of what has happened in the last 6 months:

July 2008- Sweat quite a bit and discovered that New York City is beyond gross in the summer months complete with a terrible stench.

August 2008- Saw Radiohead play twice: New York and San Fran. Traveled to San Francisco. Spent some time in L.A.

8 Days at Burning Man- Had one of the best trips to date. Decided to quit my job at “For Your Imagination” and start my own business in the Web Video world

September 2008- Quit my job at For Your Imagination, started “Dave Ford Enterprises”, a Branded Entertainment Advertising Agency with partner Mike Cerrone

October 10, 2008- After much thought, decided to change the name of the company to “Branded Evolution”. Started working as hard as I have ever worked in my entire life to get this business off of the ground.

October 20, 2008- Became addicted to the social networking tool Twitter. You can follow me here

November 2008- Began to see the structure of the business take shape. Have some deals in the works. We decide to bring on John Brennan as CTO. Also we throw up a splash page for the business while we work on the website.

November 5 2008- Barack Obama wins the election. Mass celebration occurs in New York City and the world for that matter. Pots and pans are repeatedly banged on our street for hours after the election.

Last Weekend- Went to a mediation retreat in upstate New York. Meditated for 15 hours over the course of the weekend. I am slowly moving closer to my lifelong goal to bend spoons with my mind.

Right this very second- Working in my favorite coffee shop in Brooklyn–South Side Coffee shop. This small, hipster run shop is three blocks from my house and has quite amazing wi-fi capabilities. Also, great tea.

In conclusion: I do not for the life of me want to lose the slight writing chops that I have developed over the past few years while traveling. So, damn it, I am going to get this thing back up and running. Alas, there is not much travel in my immediate future. My goal in life is to get this business up and running. But, its great to have a place to empty my head. This shall be the new use of Dave Ford Does Earth– until I set back off again into the world in a few years : )

On the last week of August 2008–my friends Dave Binck, Mike Cerrone and I drove for 14 hours from L.A to the middle of the desert in northern Nevada for 8 days at Burning Man. The event has been going on since the late 1980’s and is one of the most impressive experiences I have ever been a part of. This year 50,000 people participated in the “art” and “free spirit” festivities.

At Burning Man there is no buying or selling of anything. Everything must be brought with you upon entry and taken away with you when you leave. The premise is to leave “no trace”.

Over the course of the last few months I have tried repeatedly to write about our experience and have found that it is simply indescribable. And believe me when I say I tried.

Today I came across this professionally shot photo gallery and feel that these pictures that tell part of the story on their own.

Click here.. (Warning: there is some artistic nudity involved)

http://www.scottlondon.com/photo/burningman2008/001.html

The three of us are already plotting our return in 2009. This much is for certain! And I have a feeling that our camp will be expanding. : )

Much Peace and Love,

My array of friends that work for Bike the Big Apple, a New York City bicycle tour company told me about a group of people that “roller skate dance” every Saturday and Sunday in Central Park. Without much to go on, Francis (my editor), Matt (my cameraman/producer), and I strolled up to Central Park on a nice Sunday afternoon to see if we could find out more about the scene. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

We would like to give much thanks to the people involved with “The Central Park Roller Skate Dancers”. They were incredibly forthcoming, helpful and overall excited to have us be a part of their experience for the day.

If you find yourself up in New York City on the weekend. Take your skates to the park and get lost in the world of roller skate dancing. They should call it “skancing”–or maybe not : )

Peace out,

P.S. I am heading out into the deserts of northern Nevada for a little festival called “Burning Man” for 8 days. I should have many pictures upon my return. I am highly looking forward to 8 days with no iPhone or iMac or anything else.
