Get rid off PORN

Dave PC Guy will be splitting off. My articles will be migrating to a new server and a new website. They will remain here, yes, for some time, I cannot guarantee how long. A copy of everything will be migrated to the new website and I will no longer be writing articles. However, that does not mean that Dave PC Guy will die all of a sudden, it simply means that it’s branching off. I will update soon as to where the new website is, and such after I set it up.

For the past few months, I have been struggling with trying to learn how to program in Javascript, one of the easiest languages one can learn (besides C, I suppose). I know to program in PHP pretty well, I got the whole concept down, and I’ve made plenty of sites to say that I’m experienced. I can work with MySQL, and I can do plenty of other things. However, Javascript has been giving me a headache, that is, until recently.

I tried to work through the language the same way I did with PHP. I watched a few in-depth videos, I tried to do some tutorials on good-tutorials, etc etc. But that did not work. However, I found a great way to get started with the language. I call this the “crash course method”.

Crash Course Method

Here is a summary of my crash-course method:

1. go on a tutorial site, one that goes from the beginning to the end with Javascript, such as w3schools.
2. look at the topics and write them down real quick like so ( – statements, – comments, – variables)
3. for each topic, make a little program to demonstrate the topic, here is an example for  a for loop and comments:

4. Don’t focus on the details of javascript, or the tutorials, each programming language works almost the same way (variables, loops, functions etc) so, simply see how javascript works and relate it to your language. For example, in PHP I used the echo function to print out text, javascript uses document.write() with the text between the parenthesis. In PHP, each variable has a dollar sign in front of it, in javascript, that is not the case. Do print out a variable, simply don’t use quotation marks. Make notes of these details, that’ll come in handy
5. Have fun! Make little programs, pointless programs that could be made without the use of javascript. Simply, get used to writing the code, don’t find a way around it, tackle the project with javascript

The idea of a crash-course is not to focus on the details, and simply write code as much as possible. That helps the most, I found that out with PHP, and I’m starting to find this out with javascript as well. 

Also, note that all programming languages work on a similar concept. Just because it looks unfamiliar, does not mean it does not follow the standard principles you’re used to.

Recently, I’ve realized that I boot into my Windows just to get on Dreamweaver to do some coding. There are lots of code-editors out there, available for Linux but what I really needed was a “web editor” that would support FTP uploads, PHP, CSS, and Javascript coding and everything else. I also wanted a sleek interface.
Now, Ubuntu provides several packages available for KDE but only one good web-editor for GNOME. It’s called BlueFish Editor. It is in the Ubuntu Software Center and it is under Developer Tools and Web Development.

Let’s look at what USC tells us about this application:

It says “HTML” but the screenshot shows PHP. Here is the into video from their website:

Features:

• lightweight enough to work on netbooks
• WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get)
• cleanly keep open several files through a tabbed inteface
• Snippet sidebar that includes custom dialogs, forms, etc.
• custom programming support so you can include C, C++, CSS, and many other languages
• toolbars that include HTML codes etc

Let’s install this application then. Click on install, as usual, authenticate the install with your password, and let’s get on with this.

When you start up the application, that’s what you get. You see that custom menu? Here, you can select between several different languages and paste in commonly used code-snippets. Under PHP, for example, you can connect to a database, set cookies, and do all kinds of things, automatically.
Right above the custom menu is a tabbed code menu. Here, you can automatically add more code. You can add tables, change the text orientation, include forms, well, do just about almost everything. If you use several pieces of code frequently from the tabbed menus, you can add them to the quick bar for easier use (it’s akin to the dreamweaver favorites bar).
On the left there, you can browse through your computer to open or add different files. The tabs below the file browser lets you switch between the browser, function references, and bookmarks.
The tab(s) below the main text screen let you switch between files.
Again, this is as close to dreamweaver as you can get, and it even has some features that are BETTER than dreamweaver’s.

How to do some basic things

I talked about the custom menu, here it is:

I opened one of my sample programming documents that uses a lot of PHP. In it, I manually specified a “connect” function to a database. It’s a fairly easy process once you get the hang of it but bluefish makes it even easier. Let me show you how. Here is the original (highlighted by Bluefish):

I want to see how it will be match up. Of course, some of these things are fairly custom for my own uses (global variable declaration, function etc). I decided to delete all that was inside and use the custom menu in bluefish to add a connection to the database.

• First, click on “PHP” in the custom menu
• Second, choose “MySQL” and then “Connect” from the menu and you’ll get a dialog box:

Fill in the information needed, press enter, and here is the output:

Fairly simple, even if TOO simple. However, this is a good start and it will save you a lot of time when creating applications. There are tons more different code snippets you can use.

DIVs

Let me show you how to add a <div> to your page with all the specifications you require.

• First, get to the bar ABOVE the custom menu
• Click on “CSS”
• Click on the far right icon that shows “Div…” when you hover over it
• get a nice dialog box

• Fill in all the information, you can add styles by clicking on the “Style…” button:

As you can see, Bluefish is easy to use and very intuitive. There’s a ton more things you can do with Bluefish and it’s a lot of fun using it. Remember that it’s FREE and it’s on par with DreamWeaver (NOT FREE) so long live Linux, GNU, and free software!

Okay, I promised you that I would go over some/most applications available in the Ubuntu Software Center. First up is 7zip located under the Accessories. Here is the information:

7zip is a “windows-only” compression tool, serving as an alternative to Winzip. This 7zip install is a command-line only port of the original application. It was created by a developer, not the original creator. It can open several different formats including zip, rar, rpm, iso, and tar. As well as many others. Here is the most important part, it opens 7z files.

Again, remember that it is command-line only!

Okay, install the application by clicking on install and authenticating the install with your root password.

You can review the installatin by clicking on “In Progress” on the left side of the Ubuntu Software Center window.

Now you are ready to use 7zip, here is a sample command line:

7z a -t7z /home/user/Desktop/SomeFolder.7z /home/user/Desktop/SomeFolder -mx5

Here is a breakdown of that command. Replace “/home/user/Desktop/SomeFolder.7z”  with the location of the file (“/home/user/Desktop/”) and the desired name of the output file (“SomeFolder.7z”). Replace the second directory (“/home/user/Desktop/SomeFolder”) with the directory of the folder you want to compress (“/home/user/Desktop/”) and the name of the folder (“SomeFolder”). You can also use a command-line generator to accomplih this and save yourself some time.

Another way of doing thing is by using the Ubuntu interface itself. 7zip nicely integrates, here is how.

Right-click a folder you want to compress and click on “compress”. This will pull up a dialog:

Click on create and you’ll be done. The other options include an option to password-protect the file, and split it into volumes.

That’s it! I hope you enjoy this program, it’s rather useful!

I’ve been writing for numerous blogs for a while now. And it’s the same thing every time, I have to log in to the blogging system (Blogger for example), pick the right blog I write for, add a new post and remember how to use the particular editing interface. It’s the same with WordPress, LiveJournal, and all the other services. And it’s especially true for self-hosted blogs where you can’t log into one place to access several blogs (as is possible in Blogger).

Now, there are a lot of blogging clients that make that a breeze. What I will focus on today, will be setting up the Windows Live Writer (Windows Only, obviously). Here is what I will cover:

• Downloading and installing Windows Live Writer
• Setting up the Writer with your self-hosted WordPress Blog
• A sample blog post

Windows Live Essentials

The first thing you need to do is download the Windows Live Essentials.

Save the file and run it. It’s not a large file, it’s an installer that will download all the different Live Tools you wish to use.

As you can see it will show you what you already installed and what programs you can still install. I already have the Writer, so I’ll install Mail as a demonstration of how this works. Check of what you want, and press install. The installer will check if you need to close any applications to continue the installation, like this:

Close the programs, and the installer will download and install the applications you selected. It may take a while if you chose all of them but it should be rather quick if you chose only the Live Writer. Also, in my case, the installer may re-download some applications to update them.

Adjusting your Blog

This is the easy part, you just have to check out an option. While in the dashboard of your WordPress blog (self-hosted only) look through the panes on the left and click on Settings>Writing:

You’ll get to the Writing Settings Page, scroll down to Remote Publishing and check off “XML-RPC”:

There, and you’re done. Let’s set up our Windows Live Writer.

Setting up Windows Live Writer

Go ahead and open up the Writer, it’ll be in your start menu. You’ll get a configuration dialog, just click through it and mark the options I have:

Windows Live Writer can connect to various service, even create a new blog. Click off “Other blog service”.

Type in the web address to your blog. Obviously enough, you can type in the web address of any of your favorite blogs (Blogger, LiveJournal, etc.), TYPE THE WHOLE URL! Type in your username and password. I recommend using the “remember password” option.

Next, WLW will ask you if you want a post posted on your blog to detect the theme settings (this will help in writing and editing articles):

Check off “yes”. You may encounter an error like this:

There’s nothing you can do about that. Your theme may just be too complex for WLW to download and use. However, I have connected a single blog to two different Writers (on two separate systems) and have gotten mixed results. If you want to try again, do so after finishing setting up, go to the next page of this blog post, the guide is there.

Okay, next choose the name of your blog (under which you will access it on WLW):I was setting up WLW for my blog Rising Spirit and the program automatically recognized the name of my blog despite the URL mismatch (the URL is : http://www.perfectlifetoday.com but the blog is named Rising Spirit). Click finish and this is what you should get:

Depending on your theme, and if WLW correctly downloaded your theme, this page may look different. And you’re finished!

Sample Post

Just start typing, As you can see, you have categories and tags on the bottom. You can set a publish date and do a lot of crazy things. Here is my typed-up post in the “edit” window:

Press “Publish” and WLW will publish the post and automatically load the blog page in your browser. Go see my blog post in its final version online, and you’ll see that it looks almost exactly how it does on WLW.

The Ubuntu Software Center is all the way on the bottom of the “Applicatons” tab. Click on it, and you’ll get to the following screen:

There are thirteen categories where you can find most of the synaptic packages and software available to Ubuntu. If you click on “Get Software” on the left you will be provided with several other categories. “Provided by Ubuntu” which hosts most of the application and then “Canonical Partners” where I found only two applications and that is Adobe Flash and Adober Reader. Both available for immediate download and install, I remember I used to have to navigate to the Flash download page and download it manually. The categories are:

• Accessories

• Fonts
• Games with subcategories: Arcade, Board Games, Card Games, Puzzles, Role Playing, Simulation, and Sports
• Graphics with subcategories: 3D, Drawing, Painting & Editing, Photography, Publishing, Scanning & OCR, Viewers

How to install applications:

Click on one of the categories, I will go over MANY of the applications available here, with screenshots and everything. It seems like a good way to get to know open source software/linux-ware.

I clicked on accessories and this is what you should get:

You can go ahead and install the application if you want by clicking install. Otherwise, select which application you want and click on more info. The applications with little checkmarks next to them (such as the Archive Manager) mean that they are already installed. If you click on them, the “install” button previously there will be replaced by “remove”. Here is what happens when you click on “more info”:

Again, you have another install button, also a notification that it is, indeed, a free application. You get a small description. Many of the applications also have screenshots but they may take a few seconds to load (not everyone hosts on bandwidth behemoth servers) so wait it out. You’ll also get a website link so you can check out the official site (for news, forums, tips, and other information). Canonical will also inform you, at the end that the application MAY NOT be updated through Canonical, but it maybe updated through the Ubuntu community. Watch out for this, but it’s pretty standard information. On the bottom left, you’ll see what license the software is under. It may say “Open Source”, “Unknown”. The bottom right will inform you of the version, this one seems to indicate that it was made for Ubuntu 9.04, but I may be wrong. Most applications have independent numbering but some may refer to Ubuntu distros. There is nothing to worry about with that, all of the applications are compatible with Ubuntu 10.04 (otherwise they would not be listed, I imagine). Here is an example of a description with a screenshot:

If you decide to install the app, just click install. The software center creates a queue of applications to be installed so you don’t have to worry about waiting until the application is downloaded and installed. Just keep on browsing. The center will, however, ask you for root permission (your password) in segments, sometimes after every application, sometimes after a few. I’m not sure how this works but it’s much more comfortable than the previous system.

Okay, so click on install, you will have to authenticate, and next you’ll see a little progress status thing in the sidebar:

If you are still in the “more info” section of the application, you’ll get a status bar:

That’s about it, after it’s installed, the “Install” button will change to “Remove” as previously stated.

One more thing to note about installing applications is the last category in the sidebar that let’s you view Installed Applications. When you click on that option, this is what you will get:

Basically, you get no categories, and no distinctions. All you get is the application list, and the total number of applications installed on the bottom. It’s alphabetically sorted, and it should be easy enough to browse through, but again, not categories, and not even the option to get a different view.

I will be covering some of the individual applications later on in different articles but do have fun and try them out regardless. I think Canonical did a really good job with informing you, the user, with what each application does and links for more information. I truly appreciate that because it saves a lot of time googling.

I encountered a strange dilemma. I was using HDClone to clone my hard drive, and as I’ve said in my last post, I messed up my Windows installation. After deciding to reinstall Windows, I encountered another problem. My partition table. You see, my hard drive has 500GB instead of 160GB (my old HDD). So here is my issue:

The first disk (Disk 0) is my original HDD, the second one is my new one. Now, that 329 GB partition on Disk 1 has 100 GBs of data on it that I have nowhere to back up. The 48GBs partition on Disk 1 is where my Windows 7 installation was until I deleted it. My issue is that I need to move the 329 GB partition to the right, by about 20-30 GBs so that my W7 partition can have more data.

Here’s how I did it:

Step 1: Choose What You Want To Do

Go to your start menu, type in “disk” and open up the disk manager. You should see something like this:

Probably less drives, different partitions, or whatever. This is what your hard drive looks like. Disk 0 should be your primary disk where your OS installation should be. If you’re running Win7, you’ll have the 100mb System reserved partition and the main system partition. I created an extra data partition.

Choose what you want to do. Is it worth it moving that data/adjusting the partitions? In my case, it is, I have nowhere to back up my data, and I want to move a single partition. By the way, it does not have to be a partition stuck between two unallocated data segments! You can do this on your disk even if it looks like your Disk 0, but I am focusing on Disk 1 so let’s move on.

Getting EaseUS Partition Manager

EaseUS Partition Manager is a free tool that will let you MOVE the partitions. You may have noticed that the Windows Disk Manager does not let you do that. The program is FREE but only if your system is non 64-bit. If it is, you will get a message that tells you to buy the professional version. If that happens, try the GParted tutorial on moving/adding/deleting partitions.

Installation is pretty straightforward so I won’t go through that thoroughly. Let’s move onto what to do.

Using Easeus Partition Manager

Boot up the partition manager and you should see a similar set up as in the Windows Disk Manager:

Again, on top, you have the drives, on the bottom you have more information about your drives. Here’s the rundown of controls on the top bar:

1. Undo: This will undo the last action you do. Remember, when you change something, it will NOT take effect until you click on apply on the bottom left.
2. Apply: Another position of the apply button. Once you click this, the program will go into action and do everything you told it to do. Until you click on it though, nothing will change
3. Move/Resize: Here you can manually move or resize any partition. Here is a trick: if you want one partition to be bigger than another, shrink one first, and extend the other. You might have to MOVE the partitions accordingly to make it work!
4. Create: If you click on Unallocated data, you will be able to create a partition using various formats. The most widely used format for Windows partitions is NTFS. Backup hard drives usually use FAT32. FAT is not used anymore
5. Delete: Click on a partition, press delete and the partition is deleted!
6. Format: Click on a partition and you can change the format of that partition, ie. from FAT32 to NTFS. Unfortunately that erases all of the data. You can also use this to erase the data (if you want to) but remember that this will not actually ERASE the data permanently. If you’re thinking about selling your HDD, or throwing it away, use an actual eraser program. Formatting will only make the data unavailable to users without HDD recovery tools
7. Copy: Self-explanatory. You copy a partition.
8. Copy Dynamic Volume: A dynamic volume is a partition that is not placed in sequence. You see how all these partitions are nicely organized? One after another? A dynamic volume is one that may be located before AND after another partitions. In effect, it’s like having two partitions in one. Unfortunately, such a volume is useless for OS installations. This copy button is for those kinds of partitions
9. Properties: This will give you all the information you need about a partition.

Self-explanatory, indeed. Try it out! One great thing about the partition movement is that you can just grab a partition and move it around. It will tell you by how much you’re moving your partition. I clicked on the partition and dragged it to the right by 15 GBs.

Apply Changes

Once you’re done messing around, click on the “apply” button. You will go through a dialog. Keep on clicking next and here is what the progress of moving a partition will look like:

EASEUS will automatically move the data on the partition to preserve it. It may take some time. For example, I’ve written this whole article while waiting for it to be done, while watching a show on Hulu. It takes a LONG time if you have a lot of data, even if you move it just 15 GBs, and especially if you are using an external HDD but wait for it, it’s worth it. It might be useful to defragment first for faster operations, keep that in mind.
