Waking up from a night shift to the beautiful afternoon light, I wanted to take a photograph before heading out to another shift at the hospital. I was able to get my Mom to stand for a portrait in the lovely backyard garden. I used two lights for the portrait. One had a Lumiquest LTP  and the other just had a small diffuser. I had her stand amongst the kale plants, and photographed it with my 50mm lens.

The past weekend I did a workshop with Christopher Morris and his assistant Jens Kristian Balle at Vancouver Photo Workshops. It was an opportunity to play around with some different gear, learn some lighting set ups and meet some photographers. 

The overall experience was great. We worked with a bit of theory on the morning of the first day before heading off to the Queensborough Boxing Club for the afternoon. It is a smaller space with some great character to work with. We had two boxers that had come out for the afternoon of the photography session.

The next day we spent with Isolde and David at the Vancouver Photo Workshops Studio working a few different light set ups. For myself it was interesting to see how these light set ups were done, and also to see some of the ideas my classmates had. 

Now it is time to put some of that knowledge to work.

City life. Late night the streets are alive, there are lights, cars, people walking this way and that way. Lights are on at all hours, it makes for a fun place to take some longer exposure photographs. Larry lent me a stand and I headed out after my class at Vancouver Photo Workshops to photograph my walk along Cambie St in Vancouver. I hit up the Cambie Street bridge, Park Cinema, A bike shop and some Purple steam fingers. It was very enjoyable night for a walk.

During the months of March and April groups of snowboarders arrive to take part in Jump Camp at Forbidden Plateau. For the past couple of weekends I have been making my way up there to take photographs of the happenings. They have a number of hits(jumps) built up and provides ample opportunities for photographs. During the two weekends that I spent time up at the hill, there was time to work different ideas of what I wanted to photograph. The light on both weekends was great. A bit of cloud cover with the light nicely dampened by moving clouds. Look forward to the next set that I can go up for.

A week in Cuba, now that dosen’t seem very long, however Erin and myself were able to catch lots of different sights and sounds in Havana, Cuba. We had done a bit of research before we went, and we had grabbed an app called Havana Good Time for the Iphone. We found it super helpful in finding different locations while on the move throughout the city.

Havana is a wonderful place to explore. At times very crowded it was easy to find some out of the way places to explore. One great place we found for food was La Buena Vida, a vegetarian restaurant out near calle 46. We check out some live jazz at La Zorra y el Cuervo, The Fox and The Crow. It was a great, the entrance was through a red telephone booth.

We stayed just outside Havana in Playa del Este and were able to come in to Havana at a variety of different times. Next time it will be off exploring other areas of Cuba.

Last monday, Erin and myself went out to Comox Lake for a running photo session. We headed to the trail Tomato Creek and we hit the light pretty much spot on. It gave us an hour to play with and get some good images. We also stopped down near the Dam for another couple of running shots, this time working with the reflection in the water.

The photographs from the trail run, I ran 1-2 flashes mounted on mini and flex pocket wizards. I was able to synch up to 400o/sec for one of the images. We started off with no flashes, then worked on a couple of different ideas. The light keep getting better as the afternoon went along. Ah, Daylight savings+ longer days= nice evening light.

Went out for a walk through Mack Laing Park yesterday afternoon. The light was very nice, at 430pm. I wandered through the park with my 300mm lens for a stroll, found it easy to carry with my RS-4 strap over my shoulder. Nice and comfortable to walk with. There were a few people out and about during the afternoon as I headed over to Goose Spit to listen to the sea lions. Finding the afternoon light to be very nice and playing around on this post with some of my presets in Lightroom 4. Always enjoy getting outside. Enjoy the pictures… I’m out for a paddle.

Carrying my Camera around with me is always fun. Seeing different lines, features in a variety of things, details….

It is always interesting to see what comes of walking around on a boat, camera in hand, an idea or two in my head. Looking for different ways to photograph and then edit the images once they are on the computer. Most times it is very simple, hardly another at all. I do love a certain amount of my presets that I have in Lightroom 4.

Sitting out of the way at SPL is a nicely shaded, slightly older cabin. This Cabin has a lot of history and occasionally through teaching work with the COLT program the opportunity arises when it is possible to stay here. It is a great place to sit and have a conversation, relax, watch as the sun sets on Upper Campbell lake. If it’s sunny, sometimes it is, it’s great to take in a few rays and read a book while sitting on the deck.

This one evening I spent with fellow instructors Laurel Archer, and Emre Bosut having a number of different conversations. A great evening. While talking I took a few photos with my 50d and a LensBaby Composer.

And then the sun went down

The Airpark.

I went out to the airpark before a meeting, had a little bit of time to catch the fleeting light and have a wander and stretch the legs. The light always falls differently here depending what is happening with the clouds. I had my 28-135mm lens with me today, it is handy as it has a bit of a built in Macro feature. I find it to be a nice walk around lens. The tide was a long ways out, on this afternoon. It was great to catch the grasses with the light on them.
