A series of unfortunate events...

Dear Friends -

This is a tough blog entry to write. Although my recent move to California has been a very good one that has opened many doors of opportunity for me as a working singer-songwriter, there seems to have been an unexpected perfect storm of sorts (aka a series of unfortunate events). Some website and writing work that has been key to supplementing my income has been put on hold for a month or so, the holidays have slowed down my gig schedule temporarily, my divorce is proceeding on an accelerated basis requiring expensive legal counsel - and it has cancelled my health insurance effective today. Consequently, I'm doing everything I can to earn some extra income during this challenging time.

If you have ever considered purchasing my recordings but haven't yet, and you feel you would enjoy them, doing so now would provide you a great music listening experience while helping me get through until the holiday lull has passed. (If you've already purchased my music&mdash;please accept my heartfelt thanks! I'll have new recordings available soon.)

As an incentive, I've reduced the price of all of my album downloads and physical CDs by 50%! Here's what's available:

Dear Friends and Family -

Happy Thanksgiving!

One year ago today, November 23, 2010, I sat down in my home studio and recorded and released a 12-song download-only album entitled 11-23-10. The album was recorded live beginning around 7pm and was released for download somewhere around midnight.

Since then I've had this recording remastered by Jeff Knorr at CollapseAble Studios in Asheville, NC, and it is available now in high-quality WAV downloads as well as on the physical compilation CD &quot;CALICARO.&quot;

New video from California

Dear Friends and Family:

The California tour has gone wonderfully and has me quite inspired for many reasons. Rupert Wates, Nancy Jones, Stacey Lorin and I had a great run in the San Francisco Fringe Festival September 9-18 performing <a href="http://www.bitemusiclimited.com">Rupert Wates' &quot;Joe's Cafe&quot; music revue. The whole experience in this wondeful place prompted me to resurrect a song I co-wrote in 1983 with Ron Moulton, &quot;California Skies.&quot; Recorded a video of it this afternoon:

<a href="http://youtu.be/_1CWQjSICzE">

I look forward to performing this song and many others this evening (Thursday, September 22) at 8pm at <a href="http://www.thealternativecafe.com/events.php" target="_new">The Alternative Cafe in Seaside, CA. If you're in the area, I hope you'll drop in for the show.

Also, my new compilation two-cd set, &quot;CALICARO,&quot; a limited edition release I created specifically for this tour, is available online. <a href="http://daveturnermusic.com/ordercds.cfm">Click here to preview/buy.

More news soon. Thanks for listening and reading.

Yours in music,
-Dave

Special thanks to Rupert for making it possible for me to be on this tour and arranging the gigs, and to Nancy for lining up accommodations and the shows at The Steinbeck Center and The Alternative Cafe.

For this tour I have released a new compilation CD &quot;<a href="http://daveturnermusic.com/ordercds.cfm">CALICARO&quot; which wouldn't have been possible without:

Gary Pipta of MGM Communications <a href="http://www.graphicdesign.bz/" target="_new">http://www.graphicdesign.bz/ who provided stellar design and spent hours helping me assemble digipaks.

Michael Berlin and Jake Dewey of bClip Productions <a href="http://www.bclip.com/" target="_new">http://www.bclip.com/ who duplicated and printed the CDs.

Jeff Knorr of CollapseAble Studios for mastering disc two of the compilation <a href="http://www.collapseablestudios.com/">http://www.collapseablestudios.com/

Graphics Four in downtown Asheville who printed the digipak materials.

Eve Haslam, Frank Zipperer, Blythe Moore, Bill Sykes, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Burns, and my mom, Margaret Turner, who provided kind support.

Weekly update: July 18, 2011

Dear Friends,

I had an enjoyable time performing at French Broad Chocolate Lounge in downtown Asheville last Wednesday, and will be back there August 20th from 8-11pm. Looking forward to it!

This week

I'm performing Tuesday, July 19, at 8:45pm at <a href="http://www.whitehorseblackmountain.com">White Horse Black Mountain as host of the weekly open mic there - anyone who wants to perform after my short opening set, sign-up at 8pm. Free show.

I'm back at <a href="http://www.lexavebrew.com/">Lexington Avenue Brewery's front stage this Wednesday, July 20th, performing from 9-11pm. Free show. Same for next week, Wednesday, July 27th.

The road between Illinois and San Francisco

Also finalizing plans for a tour with <a href="http://www.rupertwates.com">Rupert Wates to include performances at Jackson Avenue Coffee in Charleston, IL (Aug 30), The Vine Coffeehouse in Ottumwa, IA (Aug 31), Hi-Point Cafe in Reno, NV (Sep 2), the National Steinbeck Center in Salinas, CA (Sep 3), several dates at Exit Theatre in San Francisco (Sep 9, 12, 14, 15, 17 and 18), and more. The San Francisco shows will be productions of Rupert's award-winning &quot;<a href="http://www.bitemusiclimited.com">Joe's Cafe&quot; music revue in the San Francisco Fringe Festival and will feature Rupert, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/staceylorinmusic">Stacey Lorin, <a href="http://www.myspace.com/nancyjonesmusic">Nancy Jones and me. More information soon.

Funding the tour

In the meantime, I'm working very hard to fund the San Francisco tour through music sales - if you don't have a copy of what I consider my best album to date (featuring me on piano/vox with Stephanie Morgan on backing vox, Michael Libramento on bass and Joe Buzzelli on drums) -- &quot;Could Have Talked All Night&quot; -- it is available for <a href="http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/daveturner2">download here (singles 99 cents and full album $9.99).

Thanks for reading and listening, and I hope to see you soon.

Cheers,

Hi, Everyone - Hope you're having a great week so far. I've been thinking a lot about courage this week, having watched the last space shuttle lift off a few days ago and watching a few minutes of today's space walk. Also, watched some interviews with <a target="_new" href="http://www.dailyhitchens.com/2011/01/christopher-hitchens-takes-on-new-drug.html">Christopher Hitchens&mdash;one of my favorite thinkers, lecturers, writers&mdash;about his battle with esophageal cancer. Both put my fears and anxieties in perspective.

Tonight: It's Tuesday, and that means I'm hosting open mic at <a target="_new" href="http://www.whitehorseblackmountain.com">White Horse Black Mountain, sign-up 8pm. Come join us!

Wednesday, July 13: 8pm I perform at <a target="_new" href="http://frenchbroadchocolates.com/chocolate-lounge-events/">French Broad Chocolate Lounge.

More events: <a target="_new" href="http://daveturnermusic.com/calendar.cfm">Complete calendar here.

$3 album: <a target="_new" href="http://daveturnermusic.com/newalbum112310.cfm">Download &quot;11-23-10&quot; here, all 12 tracks for just $3.

I hope everyone had a happy Fourth of July!

Performances: Please join me as I host the weekly <a target="_new" href="http://whitehorseblackmountain.com">Open Mic at White Horse Black Mountain tonight (Tue Jul 5). Signup at 8pm. NEW RECORDINGS ON VIDEO
My next-door neighbor, <a href="http://www.dstreetstudios.org/">Ben Gradison of D-Street Studios, kindly invited me in a couple of weekends ago to do some live recording, and he just posted a YouTube video of me performing my tune &quot;Might As Well&quot; along with a cover of one of my favorite Eels songs, &quot; It's A Motherf***er,&quot; the latter of which shows how certain words have no substitute when it comes to expressing a certain idea.

Watch/listen below:

JULY 9TH IN BLACK MOUNTAIN
Little break in the action on live performances - next one is <a href="http://daveturnermusic.com/calendar.cfm">July 9th, 7pm, at Monte Vista Hotel in Black Mountain, NC.

HOSTING OPEN MIC AT WHITE HORSE EVERY TUESDAY
However, every Tuesday (including this <a href="http://daveturnermusic.com/calendar.cfm">Tuesday, June 28th) I'll perform and host Open Mic at White Horse Black Mountain. Signup at 8pm, music starts at 8:45pm. Follows Irish Music Jam there from 6:30-8:30pm. All free admission. Last week we had some great performers on the stage including <a href="http://www.davidrussellandcedarblue.com">David Russell from Yanceyville, VA (passing through on a tour), Russian folk singer <a href="http://www.jamuna.us">Jamuna, Kim (Hughes)* with co-singers Ronnie and Janine, Bob Hinkle*, Sandy and Pete, Warren Koontz (all the way from Rochester, NY), and Josh W. -- a fine evening of acoustic music and a lovely audience!

* Co-owners of White Horse (Thanks to Bob and Kim for providing such a fabulous venue for this!)

ONE OF THE BEST SHOWS I'VE ATTENDED IN AGES
Also - This past Saturday, I was off so I decided to check out my friends The Cheeksters and The Zealots at <a href="http://modaddysbar.com/schedule">MoDaddy's in downtown Asheville - one of the best shows I've attended in a long, long time! The Cheeksters played many tunes from their <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-golden-birds/id434265368">just released new album (great stuff on the record and in the live performance on Saturday) and some faves from previous records to an enamoured crowd, and George McDonald Terry absolutely ROCKED with fellow <a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/thezealots">Zealots Aaron Price and Caleb Beissert. Couldn't leave until the last note was played at around 2am! Check 'em out!

The open mic I host Tuesdays, plus other goings on

Here's a little update about goings on this week:

Tue 5/3, White Horse Black Mountain: This Tuesday, as on most other Tuesdays, I'll be hosting the weekly open mic at <a target="_new" href="http://www.whitehorseblackmountain.com">White Horse Black Mountain. Admission is free. Musicians and music fans in Western NC are warmly invited to come out and see and hear what it's all about - I start and conclude each evening by performing a few songs on the piano and welcome a diversity of other performers to the stage. If you'd like to play, be there by 8pm to sign up. The open mic starts at 8:45pm, following the weekly free Irish Music Jam from 6:30-8:30pm.

Thu 5/5, Straightaway Cafe: My good friend <a target="_new" href="http://www.rupertwatesmusic.com">Rupert Wates performs at the <a target="_new" href="http://thestraightaway.com/Straightaway/Music_Schedule.html">Straightaway Cafe in Black Mountain. 6-9pm, free admission. The Straightaway is located on NC Highway 9 about five miles from downtown Black Mountain. It's a great little spot with excellent food and spirts. And Rupert's performance, as always, will make it well worth the trip.

Fri 5/6, Upstairs at Northside: I perform 9-11pm for a special gathering at <a target="_new" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Northside-Bar-and-Grill/286077982350">Northside Bar &amp; Grill on Merrimon Avenue in North Asheville.

Sat 5/7, Upstairs at Northside: My friend <a target="_new" href="http://davedesmelik.com/">Dave Desmelik, a wonderful singer-songwriter, will perform a free show from 9-11pm at <a target="_new" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Northside-Bar-and-Grill/286077982350">Northside Bar &amp; Grill. I hope you'll attend this show at one of Asheville's newest listening-room-style venues. Great spot to enjoy live music in an ideal setting.

Sat 5/7, Stone Soup: I perform 7-9pm at <a target="_new" href="http://www.stonesoupoflandrum.com">Stone Soup in Landrum, SC.

Finally, here's a reminder that all of my albums (11-23-10, Could Have Talked All Night, and Stories That Are True) are available for download at <a href="http://daveturnermusic.com/music.cfm">http://daveturnermusic.com/music.cfm.

True stories ring truer in &lsquo;Joe&rsquo;s Caf&eacute;,&rsquo; a critically acclaimed musical revue to be performed at The Duplex Cabaret Theatre April 22
Winner, Best Music Revue, San Francisco Fringe Festival

New York -- Rupert Wates And Friends are bringing &ldquo;Joe's Caf&eacute;,&rdquo; a critically acclaimed musical revue of songs based on true stories, to The Duplex Cabaret Theatre (http://www.theduplex.com) in New York at 9:30pm Friday, April 22. Helping Wates perform the songs in &ldquo;Joe&rsquo;s Caf&eacute;&rdquo; will be Safiya Fredericks, Vivian Gail, Stacey Lorin, Chris Medrano and Marc Schmied (bass).

In the &ldquo;Joe&rsquo;s Caf&eacute;&rdquo; show, the audience is invited to imagine that they are guests in an all-night cafe, where friends gather to share their stories. In this intimate environment, six consummate performers deliver fifteen songs that retell the experience of ordinary American people.

Stories behind the songs
There are tales of love and loss in the two world wars, and other stories of yesterday and today, each recast in song, each of them a piece in the mosaic that is the story of America itself. This performance of &quot;Joe's Cafe&quot; will include:

SALLY'S FARM
Based on the life of one of the leaders of the commune movement in the 1960s. Her story parallels the history of the US over the same period, from innocence to disillusion (flower power to Watergate) and back again.

MISS BURGOYNE AND THE OLD MILWAUKEE
A story that tells of the life of a spinster in one of the midwestern states between the world wars, her dreams of another life symbolized by the train that calls regularly at her town.

STAND UP COMEDIANS
The life of George Carlin, in which his own misfortunes and failures gave him fuel for his most successful gags.

THE SKIES OF SOUTH DAKOTA
The story of a young girl at a time when class and religious prejudices sometimes had fatal consequences.

SNOW IN NEW YORK
An elderly woman recalls an early morning during the blizzard of 1947 in New York City, when she and her brother found the city to be a strange new playground.

A SUNNY AFTERNOON IN THE BRONX
The frustrated efforts of a couple of blue collar guys to shoot some pool in the Bronx.

OLD MAN ON A MOUNTAIN
An officer serving in the army in Afghanistan remembers the hospitality shown him by some of the local people, whose land he and his men are occupying.

WE REGRET
In the last autumn of the second world war, a family in Connecticut receives a government telegram that begins with five words they have come to dread more than any others.

DARKNESS, DARKNESS
A hideous double murder in southern Louisiana leads to the electric chair, to retribution and forgiveness.

DICK AND DELORES (THE LOVING KIND)
An interracial couple in Virginia take their right to marry all the way to the supreme court, and later become figureheads for fighters for other kinds of civil rights.

THE VOODOO DOLL
A doll awakens memories of a superstitious past, and at the same time seems to heal a young black man's bitter memories.

DAYS OF MERCY
The exodus of a poor family across America during the dust bowl depression, at a time when the women literally kept the show on the road.

MORE HOLY GROUND
The story of Robert Gould Shaw, the white colonel of the first all black Infantry regiment to be recruited during the Civil War.

FIFTY SHOTS
The story of Sean Bell, an unarmed man shot to death by undercover police officers in Queens, New York City, in fall 2006.

Rupert Wates (author) is an award-winning singer-songwriter, born in the UK, based since 2007 in New York City. &ldquo;Truly gripping lyrics with great themes and troubling, witty messages.&rdquo; (Leith FM Radio Scotland) | &ldquo;A new and unique songwriter-musician already in the front ranks by dint of timeless work.&rdquo; (Mark S. Tucker)

In the “Joe’s Café” show, the audience is invited to imagine that they are guests in an all-night cafe, where friends gather to share their stories.

This performance of "Joe's Cafe" will include:

“Truly gripping lyrics with great themes and troubling, witty messages.” (Leith FM Radio Scotland) | “A new and unique songwriter-musician already in the front ranks by dint of timeless work.” (Mark S. Tucker)
