Disney had never managed hotels before, but they decided to get into the business when they opened Walt Disney World. I take a look back at Disney getting into the hotel business in central Florida. There are two parts - the addition of hotels along Hotel Plaza Blvd, and the Hilton Inn South that taught the new Cast Members how to run a hotel. Overview: Today’s main theme is the announcements about Star Wars Galaxys Edge. We have dates, and know many of the shthings that will appear in the land. Plus, I’ve got some other news and notes to share.

Notes: Galaxy's Edge will either be terrific or it will merit a yawn....hard to say which....but they've invested a lot of time and effort (not to mention money) into the parks to make it happen, and the sheer size is massive. So it certainly has the potential. I can't wait to see it.

Episode #333 - Vegetarian Dining at Walt Disney World

Overview: Today, I take a look around to see what's cooking - literally. I'm on a quest to find vegetarian dining at all 4 theme parks, and in some resorts. Here's to hoping you take some time on your next trip to check out some of these terrific options!

Notes: Its not all that hard to find really good (and tasty!) vegetarian options around the parks at counter service restaurants. And even vegan options are popping up more and more.

As I noted in the podcast, when in doubt about any ingredients for vegetarian reasons or allergies, just ask!

Episode #330 - A visit to "the World"

Overview: I visited Walt Disney World in late October as part of my annual tradition of enjoying the Food and Wine Festival. This time, I went at it alone, but made new friends as I went to various booths. And since I was there, I visited all the parks to check out construction activities, see what was new, and to of course ride a few favorite attractions.

Notes: I had some fun hanging around, working on my video series, and enjoying some food! I noticed with iOS12 my iPhone automatically added a location name to each recording, which was pretty slick. And except for one recording, it was accurate. The one that was wrong was when I was near the Tusker House in the Animal Kingdom. For some reason, it said the recording was "Restroom" which I thought was pretty amusing.

Episode #329 - Food Rocks

Overview: In 1993, Nestle took over as the title sponsor for The Land. One of the changes they made was to close The Kitchen Kabaret, ending the run of veggie, veggie, fruit, fruit. In March of 1994, Food Rocks was opened in its place. While it was similar in nature - food singing about good nutrition - it was quite a different show.

Notes: Food Rocks was sort of like a rock concert, and featured the voice talents of real world singers such as Tone Loc, The Pointer Sisters, and Chubby Checker.

Episode #328 - Circle of Life

Overview: After a renovation, Symbiosis was unfortunately closed. Opened in its place was The Circle of Life: an Environmental Fable. This show stretched the nature of The Land to now talk about conservation through the lens of our friends from the Lion King.

Notes: While Symbiosis was a cinematic marvel, The Circle of Life was less so, though it did reuse scenes from the original film

Episode #327 - Symbiosis

Overview: Within the Land pavilion was a remarkable move called Symbiosis that celebrated man's creative partnership with the land. It included marvels of past and present technologies and accomplishments. I talk about this film, and what it was all about.

Notes: The film was directed by Paul Gerber, and he actually brought people to see it as a living resume. It was shot in 70mm (large film format) and included shots from around the globe.

Overview: The Land is another of Epcot’s opening day pavilions in future world. The objective was to look at the earth, agriculture, and ecology. in the original design, the large atrium would have been an arboretum. It featured a large mosaic, a pretty amazing film, a boat ride, and a show about food.

Notes: The pavilion has been through three general iterations in its history, based on sponsorship. But it still kept its focus on earth-based science.

Notes: Although there were some terrific things I saw on my first couple of visits, the one that made the most lasting impression was Listen to the Land in the (surprise!) Land pavilion at Epcot. There was something sciencey about it all, and its size was truly amazing.

Notes: One of the really great benefits of growing up in Florida was having the ability to take annual school trips to the parks, in addition to the regular family trips. It really couldn't be beat.

Overview: My daughter had an opportunity to go on a school field trip to the Animal Kingdom, and I went along to chaperone. It was fun, but very different. I talk about my day.

Notes: My problem with the Navi'i river journey is that there's no story, nothing to grab you. It looks nice, but is pointless. IMHO that's exactly what Avatar (the movie) was so, I guess mission accomplished! And to clarify, I only had enough time at the end of the day to do one attraction - and the short wait time was appealing since I still had to get home.

verview: Today, its a dose of Disney news. I've got goings on in the WDW parks, and talk about transportation around WDW. I've also got some things outside of the Orlando the park - namely some new technology Disney has come up with, and an update on 21st Century Fox.

Notes: The monorail sign at the top of this entry was added to all cars after there was an incident with one monorail where the door wouldn't close. To be clear, not every car in every monorail has a problem - its just an ongoing maintenance problem.

Notes: Windows 10 rotating through images from Soarin' is kind of fun. You can make it something you love - perhaps your favorite attractions(s) or areas at Walt Disney World. Cool Runnings is about the 1988 Jamaican Bobsled team, and came out in 1990.

I mention gun control in passing during the podcast. It fit in thematically with the story I was telling. And, since the recent school shooting was nearby, our daily ives were (and are) impacted, its relevant to me. Overview: In the third part of the series, I talk about how the attraction changed in the 80s, when they lost the GE sponsorship, and 90s, when they made it more like the original attraction, except for the last scene which became a look at the turn of the 21st century. But they did restore the original theme song.

Notes: Jean Shepard took over as host in 1993. But the show is mostly the same today as it was back in 1964. Most of the props, set pieces, and the audio animatronics (with of course updates and maintenance) are the same ones used back then.

Notes: If You Had Wings was quite memorable in spite of its limited effects, and lack of an immersive storyline. I suppose it was the music, the general fun of it all, and the fact that it was free in an era where you paid per ride. People talk about the attraction with reverence. Or at least I do.

Overview: Today's podcast is a tribute to the Norway pavilion. I take a thorough look at the design, layout, and theming. Then, I spend some time talking about shopping and dining. This was the last new pavilion added to World Showcase, way back in 1988!

Notes: Norway is intriguing because it represents the area known as Scandinavia generally. I am not a huge fan of what they did to get the fictional area of Arendale into the real country of Norway, even thought it was cute and clever.

I did enjoy putting together this retrospective on all 11 World Showcase pavilions. I hope you enjoyed listening to it, and learning more about the history of Epcot.

Kristi Petersen Schoonover has been going to WDW since the 1970s, and her favorite ride of all time was If You Had Wings—but since that’s long gone, the Haunted Mansion, Big Thunder Mountain, and the Peoplemover top her list. Her collection, Skeletons in the Swimmin’ Hole, is a collection of ghost stories set in Disney Parks. Her novel, Bad Apple, was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in December 2012, and her fiction has appeared in many magazines and anthologies. She lives in the Connecticut woods with her husband, occult specialist Nathan Schoonover, and still sleeps with the lights on.

It was the first pavilion to come to world showcase after opening day. This pavilion also has the distinction of being personally overseen by the King of Morocco.

Notes:The Moroccan pavilion has amazing aesthetics. It’s just beautiful, and makes you feel like you’re actually on the streets of or in a marketplace in Morocco. Part of that feeling is due to the smell of incense that wafts through the area, but more so it is because of the stunning mosaic artwork that fills the pavilion.

Overview: World showcase had grand plans and ambitions. There were 21 sites plotted for World Showcase when the original idea was pitched. But, we only got 9 on opening day. Many other countries were oh-so-close to being built, but alas it didn't happen. This is the story about some of the proposed countries.

Notes: Its still a remarkable thing that Disney was able to create a permanent worlds fair, that at the time was unprecedented and made the world a little smaller. But we can only speculate about what might have been had they managed to get even more countries to commit.

Overview: Today's podcast is a tribute to the Italy pavilion. I take a thorough look at the design, layout, and theming. Then, I spend some time talking about shopping and dining. Its the 9th (and final) Epcot opening-day pavilion I discuss. Come and take a visit to Venice with me.

Notes: Italy is unique among the pavilions, in that there is no ride or show in the pavilion. Its shopping, dining, and a couple of performers. Primarily the focus of this pavilion is its architecture and things you can see. No doubt its worth exploring, but its hard to "talk" about on a podcast.

Here is an interesting factoid that I don't mention in the podcast: The statues that look like marble in the Italy pavilion are hollow. Since they were so lightweight and liable to blow away during the slightest breeze, they were held in place with rods running from their base through the hollow center.

Overview: Joining me on today's podcast is Scott Shindeldecker, owner of epcotmanifesto.com. We talk all about Epcot, from its history, to what we loved (and still love) about it, to what's in store for its future ... at least as far as we know.

Notes: EPCOT (in all caps) was an intriguing idea from the mind of Walt himself. Whether even he could have pulled off is anyone's guess, but what the Disney company did manage to execute was a pretty good alternative. But the world has changed, and Epcot kind of stayed stagnant, so updates and changes are probably in order. Our hope is that these changes keep the essence of what the 70s designers of Epcot had in mind.

Scott's site is a blog about his perspective on the parks, and is a fun read if you are a devotee to the idea that is Epcot.

It's a podcast so big it spans three regular shows in length! You won't want to miss it!

Notes: Food and Wine is always a great event, and I haven't missed it in many years. The downside is that it is quite a bit more crowded and that crowd can get a little rowdy as more wine is consumed. But there are tricks, like going early and leaving the park around dinner tine as the crowds swell. You can definitely make it suit your personal style.

Overview: Today's podcast is a tribute to the United Kingdom pavilion. I take a thorough look at the design, layout, theming, and talk about the infamous pub. Then, I spend some time talking about shopping and dining. Its another of Epcot's opening-day pavilions, so come and explore a look at British history.

Notes: The United Kingdom is a tribute to the island nation, and the area known as Britain, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Naturally, the UK makes perfect sense in an Epcot setting since the British colonized the United States. Be sure and check out the changes in architecture and historical record of the UK, as well as the sundial in the center of the town.

From the time that Walt Disney opened DisneyLand right up through today, US Presidents have been known to visit DisneyLand and Disney World. Starting with Truman, every one of them - except one - has visited a park, and the one still had a connection to Walt himself. A few of the Presidents past had strong ties and shared the love of the parks. I tell you about each one, and mix in some of the Voices of Liberty for you to enjoy.

Notes: Just in time for the 4th of July, its a long form piece about all of the Presidents. When I decided to create this podcast, I was pretty sure most had visited the parks, but it was fun to explore their stories and understand their passion and what they liked about visiting. I wasn't exactly surprised about LBJ, but was glad there was a connection in any case.

The Nixon story was probably the most intriguing because he was friendly with Disney. Reagan is a close second, based on his path crossing Disney's many times. The one that surprised me the most was Carter, and his wanting to know more about EPCOT.

Walt Disney and Salvador Dali have an interesting connection, through some time they spent together working on a project called Destino. Its a fascinating story I wanted to share with you after learning more about it at the Dali Museum.

Notes:The Dali Museum is located in St Petersbug Florida. Its a really interesting place with a lot of original work by Dali.

I include some audio clips from the audio tour that was available at the Walt Disney Family Museum. I use them under the Fair Use Doctrine, and my intent is to hilight the relationship between the men and provide some fundamental pieces to help explain and educate.

I hope you will take some time on your next trip to central Florida to head west and visit the museum - particularly while the exhibit is ongoing. It really is quite good!

Overview: Its the 25th anniversary of DVC, and I have never really given it its due. So today's episode is all about the vacation club - I give you all the information you need - so you can make an informed decision about whether to buy into it or not.

Notes: I think the properties are beautiful, and they do a nice job of helping you make an emotional connection. But I am still not a fan, primarily because of the opportunity cost. Of course renting points from another owner is an option that *is* appealing and solves for that.

Notes: I find the fact that Disney created a stereotypical view of Canada a little amusing. And the fact that it took them a fairly long time, and several requests from the Canadian government, to acknowledge it and tone down the point of view is striking. Still, the overall design is terrific, and the garden is beautiful.

Episode #232 - Star Wars the Force Awakens

Overview: I went to see the new film, and I wanted to take time to review it, and talk a little Star Wars. There are spoilers in this podcast, but they appear in the second half - and I call out when they're going to start...before that, I talk about the first 6 films, and Star Wars in general.

Notes: Here's a nugget for you that I didn't mention in the podcast: after "the first" episode (i.e., IV) was filmed, Harrison Ford thought the film was not to his liking, and asked not to appear in subsequent films. After some discussion with Lucas, they agreed to kill him off in Episode V....but he had a change of heart during some of the early reads, and decided to stick it out for the 3 episodes, and was delighted to come back for Episode VII.

But he also was very family oriented and considered people who worked for him as such - making his life as the head of a company bearing his name....complicated.

Overview: Last week at D23, Disney announced a plethora of new things come to the parks. I pick some of them to talk about and give some details and my thoughts about what's coming. Especially intriguing is the 11 acres that will be Toy Story Land, and the 14 acres that will be Star Wars Land at Disney's Hollywood Studios, which for now retains that name.

Notes: I am amazed at just how much Disney is investing in these upgrades and enhancements. Its a large sum, but could really make the parks amazing .

On the map at the top, I have oriented it so the entrance is on the top left; Fantasmic will be all the way at the left. The area outlined at the top is where I think Star Wars Land will net out, and at the bottom is how I think they'll orient Toy Story Land.

Overview: Today, I explore the history of EPCOT in general, and the rationale for the World Showcase portion of the park. Walt Disney had something specific in mind, and we didn't get that, but we did get an entertaining place that has a richness to it. Here's to a little history!

Notes:Its difficult to imagine what Walt's vision was, precisely, so we mainly have to guess at it. The view of Progress City that you can see from the PeopleMover is about 1/3 of the full model. The whole thing took up about 1,500 square feet - that's close the size of a smaller home!

I have favorites in each of the other theme parks, and 4 other resorts. I have a breakfast, two vegetarian dishes, three that come from the sea, some chicken, pork, and lamb.

Overview: This podcast takes a look at what came after Mission to Mars closed in the Magic Kingdom. In short, it was a creative thrill ride that didn't provide physical thrills, but rather psychological ones. Seize the future with XS!

Notes: Michael Eisner asked for it to be more terrifying along the way. And the Imagineers had to work with the existing building, and most of the set designs in order to keep costs down. Arguably, this is one of the most non-Disney attractions ever put in to the Magic Kingdom.

Back on March 31st, after 12 years running, Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade had its last run. Here's a look back at the parade...I decided to put this podcast out now simply because the World Cup is going on now, and there's a connection to the host country Brazil.

One thing I wanted to point out is that I mention in the podcast that the music in the parade is a combination of African and Caribbean music. That's true, but doesn't tell the full story. Brazil happens to have a strong African influence, so selecting Mas Que Nada as part of the music in the Jammin' Jungle parade makes a lot of sense, and fits in with the theme of the parade.

After the World of Motion came the idea to take guests through the "proving grounds" .... and that became Test Track. Guests experienced the testing that a car goes through, culminating with high-speed trip outside of the building. Later, this became more of a branded product with Test Track 2.0.

I'll be honest with you: I don't care much for it. Sure, its clever, but its missing some of the hallmarks of a great Disney attraction, and the aesthetics are overlooked, with the "wheel" that was the building now being overtaken by the track on the outside...

I took a trip last week up to WDW, and got to experience FastPass+ first-hand. We were staying off-property, so I had to book my choices at a kiosk on the "day of"...

What did I think? Overall, I didn't like it - but the cast members really did make the difference in creating an "okay" experience (as opposed to a negative one).

And to be fair, it was still an enjoyable trip, and we did get to do nearly everything we wanted to - I just thought it did nothing to enhance my visit...and frankly it was kind of a pain to work with.

Episode #153 -- Monorail Epcot Loop

On today's show, I hop onto the monorail at WDW that is heading from the Transportation and Ticket Center (or TTC as they call it in Disney 'code') and head over to Epcot. Then, I make the return trip. Come along and take a listen, and enjoy the ride!

Remember that Disney World has three monorail loops: the Epcot loop, the Resort Loop (which you can hear in my last podcast), and the Express Monorail (which everyone knows so well when they head into the Magic Kingdom, and then back to their car).

All three originate from the TTC, and make their way around to their destinations.

I will tell you that the Pirate adventure was kind of like Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom: cute and clever, but doesn't hook you in. ...and you can hear all about that activity back in Podcast #103.

The Agent P experience was a different story all together. It was a lot of fun and I highly recommend it!

Come along with me as I head out on a 4-park adventure. That's right, I was recently at the WDW resort, and visited all 4 parks in a day. The twist this time is that I only used busses and my feet to get between the parks. Take a listen as I tell stories and wander in and out of the parks.

The order of parks for me was Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, and the Studios. The rationale was to catch Soarin' early in the day - and to end at the Studios for Hyperspace Hoopla (it was Star Wars Weekend). And I wanted to catch lunch at the Flame Tree, so that worked out pretty well.

Ticket Prices:
1972 -- $5.75 for a packet, under $8 per day to see most everything
1982 -- $11 per day
1992 -- $33 per day
2002 -- $48 per day
2012 -- $85 per day

For reference, Disney's operating income from Walt Disney World looks something like this:
1972 - $150 million
1982 - $110 million
1992 - $258 million
2002 - $350 million
2012 - $475 million

And here is the inflation rate over the time period:
72 - 82: 130%
82 - 92: 45%
92-02: 28%
02-12: 28%

Overall inflation rate between 1972-2012: 450%

Its really about how, IMHO, they miss the mark in some way. For some of them, its the way they use their space, for some its the food, and for a few the "experience" is great but its off for some reason.

Now I know that - probably - no one will agree with my list in its entirety, and I'm sure some will think I left off a restaurant. But I wanted to throw out my list and get the conversation started.

Today, I present the audio from the Hall of Presidents, as it existed from 1971-1993. It is narrated by Lawrence Dobkin, and provides an interesting - and very Walt like - view back into the history of our great country. If its your first time hearing it, see if you don't learn something. And if you remember it from the past, see if there are moments that seem to be part of our collective consciousness, and our understanding of history. This version is ca 1973, and the last president listed in Nixon.

The only things that changed in the show over the next 20 years were the addition of the next president, and the battle hymn at the end in the 80s. Otherwise, the show remained the same.

Something interesting I noticed as I listened to this audio was that some of my recollections about historical facts were based on this show - rather than something I learned in a school room. I won't comment on whether that's good or bad, but it does show the power of the presentation

And then, I present part of the audio from a live TV feed from EPCOT that was shown on CBS to promote its opening. Show #107 - a trip report and a good cause

I've been doing this for a while now, and one thing that's missing is a bit of a social conscience. I figure we all should do some good for others, and that's what I aim to do.

Now I know this is not my greatest work. Believe me when I say I had a lot of trouble deciding on an approach for this podcast. But I believe that what it lacks in overall production quality is offset by its purpose.

You see, I have a friend who has a child diagnosed with autism. He wanted to take a trip to Disney, and relying on everything I know about Disney I pronounced "I believe Disney will take great care with you, and you'll have a great time!"

But it turns out that he had other information from people in his circle: Disney is NOT (gasp!) that great at making accommodations for children with autism and (double gasp!) Universal does it better.

Say it isn't so!

So, he decided to bring his other child down to investigate and visit both and determine what his son can handle and how both parks deal with issues.

And so I took him around the Magic Kingdom, and we had a ball.

But I became more acutely aware of what he was saying...and decided that my social conscience would be directed at raising awareness and supporting an organization called "Autism Speaks"....you can find a link to the site on this page, and on disneypodcast.net

What I would like to do over time is to hilight the cause from time to time, and if anyone has some experience in this area, please feel free to comment or send me an email.

I'm not sure where I want to go with this, exactly, but I just feel like it should go *somewhere*.

First things first. I play part of an interview that Rick Brigante did with Imagineer Jonathan Ackley. I provide it for context, but want to give full credit to Rick. You should visit his site and check out his work. He provides a thorough look at all things Disney... Inside the Magic

Now I will admit, I didn't love this. I liked it, but I didn't feel like it was enough - since you stand on a pad and wave a card and get sent to the next destination. While the animation is great and its entertaining, I just found that it wasn't as interactive as I would like, and it took away from other things I wanted to do. I have more fun looking for Hidden Mickeys!!

But if you want to spend a little of your trip checking it out, its worth admiring the technology and the animation! And you can always stop at any point and pick it up later - or another day or even another trip!

Surprise in the skies:

Tinkerbell:

My Disney-style popcorn:

2 Tbsp canola, 1 Tbsp coconut oil
1/3 cup of high quality popcorn kernels
1 3-quart covered saucepan
Flavacol or similar

Heat the oil in a 3-quart saucepan on medium high heat.
Put a few popcorn kernels into the oil and cover the pan.
When the kernels pop, add the rest of the 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels in an even layer. Cover, remove from heat and count 30 seconds.
Return the pan to the heat. The popcorn should begin popping soon, and all at once. Once the popping starts in earnest, gently shake the pan by moving it back and forth over the burner. If you keep the lid slightly ajar to let the steam from the popcorn release, the popcorn will be cripser.
Once the popping slows to several seconds between pops, remove the pan from the heat, remove the lid, and dump the popcorn immediately into a wide bowl.
Add Flavacol (you want to lightly coat all kernels)

Enjoy!

The second host of SpaceShip Earth is the one most people remember as being the voice of the attraction - and really the voice of Epcot. Of course, he's uncle Walter - Walter Cronkite. Respected as a journalist, Cronkite adds a certain authority to the audio. On this show, its Walter's narration of SpaceShip Earth.

His voice could be heard from 1986-1995, but to me he will always be *the* voice of the attraction. This was certainly the version I enjoyed the most.

Its pretty thorough except for one simple thing that I failed to mention: green lanyards on CastMembers means they trade only with children.

I also delve into what you might trade, different types of pins that are available to trade, and even where you might get some pins a little cheaper to get you started.

Its a fun activity that really doesn't cost much and is easy to get home.

As for me, I don't trade, but I do have a couple of pins, including the 5-legged goat that appears on the mural in the Contemporary.

The show ran from 1984 until about 2000, and was a bit of fun. The entire building was redecorated, and the bears were wearing holiday costumes. And the script and songs were different.

It was kind of fun to get into the holiday spirit. For me personally, it was always fun to try and time a visit so I could catch the show, since it had a limited run.

Over the summer, the family took a trip to Disney - simply to enjoy the water parks. I talk about both of the parks, and tell some stories about our trip.

One of the coolest things has to be the view from the top of Teamboat Springs - from there you can see all 4 of Disney's Theme Parks.

The water parks are a hoot, and I highly recommend visiting them.

We delve into this complex relationship, and talk about some general topics in political science as they relate to Disney. But fear not! This is a fun discussion and there is no final exam.

Among the topics:

Did you know that Walt was *this close* to opening a park in St Louis before he found Florida?
Did you know that Disney has tremendous authority for land use?
Would you believe that Walt understood the issues of having permanent residents in his EPCOT?
Did the company use the concept of EPCOT to its advantage after Walt's death?

For the millennium celebration, Disney rolled out the Tapestry of Nations parade, or more aptly show. It was a larger-than-life exhibit with giant puppets (made by the same guy who did the puppets for the Lion King on Broadway), and rotating drums.

It went on for about 4 years, before it faded off. The musical score was beautiful, and I share it and a little history with you on this podcast.

I'll be honest and say this was one of my favorite productions ever, and I miss it.

I give some thoughts about the time I spent doing that, and also talk about the restaurants that I checked out while I was there.
