Wild Flag - "Something Came Over Me": "It's got the right melodic elements of classic Helium, but it's sweeter than anything Helium ever did. I love Helium deeply, but it always felt sad, heavy, angry, strange...not light, like this. It still feels like the Helium I missed, but back in a newly structured environment (to its advantage) and not as a 90s retread. A belated welcome back Mary Timony. I'm happy this is also my New Year's Eve post - it's a look back, a look ahead, a mix of old and new, nostalgia mixing with wanting something fresh - which is kind of how I feel today as well. Hope everyone is sending 2011 out in style tonight."

Best Coast - "The End": "I still haven't gotten over this record. I remember being in a London hotel, soaking in a bathtub (I so rarely find a tub that truly fits me, I have to take advantage of them when I find them), right after picking up the album, and listening to the whole thing all the way through. It had been cold and grey outside, plus I was loopy from jetlag, and I just lay there, losing myself in the tunes. It's hard for me not to think of that time when I play these songs back now."

LCD Soundsystem - "I Can Change": "It's a song that's kind of long, particularly for as little as it changes, but its appeal is in its musical simplicity, supporting the directness of the lyrics. I don't want to believe this band is technically done, but I am keeping my hopes up for whatever James Murphy brings us next."

Idlewild - "Love Steals Us From Loneliness": "I need to apologize for being a neglectful blogger - this last Tuesday (11.1.11) was the 6th anniversary of my Song of The Day blog, which had already passed 1,000 posts this September. I was going to do a song blowout this week, but I got too busy with work. It made me question if I should just put the blog on hiatus at this point, but at the end of the day - even if I may go too long between posts - I need this outlet to share music with folks I too often don't get to otherwise, so I'm not giving it up. Class Actress - "Keep You": "After obsessing over their debut EP for some time now, Class Actress' full-length is finally here! This track opens the album and, while it's technically just more 80s keyboard synth-pop like on their EP, it's really well done and based around very catchy core tunes, no matter how they're arranged. If you dig this, the whole record will be a worthwhile listen too."

Superchunk - "The First Part": "Yay for Merge's re-issue of Superchunk's Foolish, remastered so it does sound a touch better, even if it always sounded good. I may love this record as much as I did when I first heard it. As drummer Jon Wurster notes in the liner notes, there is a darker shade to this record, compared to the other Superchunk releases, and maybe that's why it's one of my favorites. There's certainly a hard (if not dark) edge to this tune, which absolutely is as rocking now as it first was. So happy to have an excuse to listen to it all again."

Monarchy - "Love Get Out of My Way": "Saw them last night in SF and they were just as awesome as they were at Coachella - if not perhaps more, since I actually know the music now. They have tremendous presence for a masked four-person band and, man, they have amazing pop songs but with depth. They clearly live in the same alternate pop universe as Robyn, where they should be ruling the airwaves, but somehow find themselves left of center here."

Nada Surf - "Do It Again": "Funny that they deliver what could have been a 90s radio mainstream alt-rock smash single after they got dropped by a major label. Charlotte Gainsbourg - "Terrible Angels": "Charlotte tosses out the live and largely organic sound of her last record for...well, Goldfrapp. It's hard not to hear the influence, but Charlotte cops the same bad-ass angle that works so well in those Goldfrapp songs, so she can get away with it."
