Here are some images of our most recent project – including some taken during the construction process and the nearly finished article. The client, Aoife Boland, wanted a glossy, slick reception desk that had a curved almost ‘moulded’ appearance for her new dental practice – The Wimbledon Dentist. The desk needed to be the main feature in the reception with lots of ‘wow’ factor to draw people into the practice. It also needed to be durable and stand up to years of heavy use from the public. 21mm Thick Staron solid surface material was used for the desk and the detailing on the curve. This polishes to a high gloss, is extremely durable and can if needed be re-polished a few years down the line so that it looks as good as new.

The joints can be glued and sanded to leave almost invisible seams. On the curved area, the Staron was cnc-routed from above and below by Derek from Advent Signs in Wellingborough. The above routed logo was inlaid with 2mm thick plastic cut outs to give a flush, durable logo with added depth. The name of the practice was under-routed and up-lit leaving a beautifully smooth and softly lit finish that was warmed by the lighting to produce a very pleasing surface to lean on.

The back-lit front curve was achieved with LED lighting mounted in a removable channel to aid servicing. We were originally going to use a formica laminate for the green front panel but Aoife couldn’t find the green she had in mind, and so we decided to have the front sprayed using eight layers of lacquer to provide a very durable finish, which could be resprayed on site if needed in years to come.
