How to your turn that into real money?

This is the question Tina Sellig, Executive Director of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, asked her students.

“What would you do to earn money if all you had was five dollars and two hours?

Flickr photo by Conlawprof

Some of the ideas the students came up with were amazingly simple and highly profitable. What I found even more interesting was that by thinking through the problem, many learned how to look beyond their own self-perceived limitations.

I know I am often guilty of getting stuck on one train of thought which prevents me from seeing less obvious solutions. One way to avoid this is to develop a list of questions that you can refer to when you have trouble “thinking outside the box”.

In this story, the students who performed best were those that were able to step back and see solutions to problems they never even knew existed. Solving common problems has made many entrepreneurs over the years very rich. Henry Ford saw the need for the average person to have a vehicle, so he devised a way to build cars so that the masses could afford them (interchangeable parts and the assembly line).

Often, the hardest thing to do is get out of our own way.

I’d been pretty happy with Chrome, but I figured I’d give the new guy a shot since it supposedly integrated with Evernote. I got more than I bargained for and Dolphin is now my mobile browser of choice for many reasons.

Homepage = Accessibility

The home page gives you direct access to the web through a number of available resources. These include:

Speed Dial (Your 6 favorite pages as icons)

Google search box

Bookmarks icon

Address bar for directly entering a URL

Gestures

At the bottom center of the screen is a dolphin icon. Clicking this icon will launch Gestures. These are customizable shortcuts that you draw with a finger to launch a page. This is much faster than typing a URL or searching through a list of bookmarks.

Sonar

There is a $0.99 option inside Dolphin (which is a free app) that enables Sonar. Once you buy it, you can shake your phone and then use voice commands for things such as searching, navigating pages and tabs, and sharing with friends. I haven’t found a need for it yet, but I might after I get more familiar with Dolphin.

Send To Device

This is an interesting feature. Yesterday I was reading a lengthy blog post and had to leave before I finished it. Knowing I would have time to finish it while I was gone, I clicked the Dolphin extension in my Chrome browser and sent the page directly to my iPad. As soon as I opened Dolphin on my iPad, there was the blog I was previously reading on my laptop! Similarly, I can send a page from my iPhone or iPad directly to my laptop.

If you are using Google maps and have the Dolphin plugin installed in either Chrome, Firefox, or Safari, there is a button under your map directions where you can send directions direct you any of your devices.

WiFi Broadcast

Let’s say you’re watching a funny cat video on your phone and want to share it with your friends in the other room, there is a way to broadcast the page to everyone that is sharing your WiFi network. I can’t see using this much, but if you are connected to a network at a friends house you may have use for it.

Share

The share button is a quick way to post to Facebook or Twitter. You can also use it to send an email.

Also under the share button are a couple of other features I find extremely useful. If you are a user of Box, you can connect your account directly to Dolphin. I don’t use Box, so I can’t attest to how well the integration works.

What I can tell you, is that Using Dolphin and Evernote together is smooooth! This was the main reason I downloaded the browser in the first place. I am an Evernote power user so anything that allows me an easy way to get things into EN is okay in my book.

Once you connect your Evernote account to Dolphin, you can easily save pages into any of your notebooks. You can also add tags and comments to any note you are creating. I don’t know how the integration of the two services could be any cleaner or easier. (See picture below)

Add a Page

The add page button lets you quickly add a bookmark, Speed Dial (to your homepage) or create a custom gesture. It’s simple and self-explanatory.

Slide Right and Left

Swiping the screen from left to right opens your bookmark menu. Here you have a list of bookmarks you have created inside Dolphin. Where things get interesting is the access to all of your other bookmarks on other devices. You have access to your browser history, open tabs on other devices, and your Chrome bookmarks. These sync seamlessly.

I use Chrome for my home browser and I love being able to have the same bookmarks on my phone, tablet, and laptop. I also appreciate being able to start reading something on my iPad and later pick it back up on my iPhone because it’s already open on another device. I use this much more than I ever thought I would.

When you slide to the left you have quick access to all of your open tabs. Because tabs aren’t displayed at the top of the screen, you have more screen real estate available for viewing your webpage.

Parting Thoughts

This is the most feature packed, cleanest, easy to use mobile browser I have tried. Getting that much functionality into such a compact space is a design marvel.

Why is this browser free? I’d easily pay $2.99 or $4.99 for it (but only because I know how awesome it is). Stop reading and go download it now! Then add the extensions into your browser (unless you are using Internet Explorer, in which case you need to take off your velcro shoes, pick up your rotary telephone, and have someone come over and use your AOL connection to install a real browser).

What is your mobile browser of choice?
Think you might give Dolphin a try?

As a kid, I never understood why people would come home from work and spend the whole night sitting on the couch watching television. As an adult with a demanding full time job and responsibilities I don’t always want to tend to, I get it. At the same time, I have dreams. Maybe they aren’t huge, universe-altering plans, but there are things I want to do and accomplish.

Chances are you already know of two or three things you’d like to do, but you’ve never taken the time pursue them. The good news is you can do something about it. Mediocrity does not have to be your destiny.

Where To Start

A good place to start is to ask yourself what is it that you would do if you didn’t have to worry about a full time job. Maybe the answer is volunteer work. What about writing a book, or changing careers and becoming a full time writer.

One of the greatest exercises you can do is to sit down and write out a bucket list. (I once had a coach who called it a “dream inventory”.) Whatever you call it, you should have one.

Take out a piece of paper and number it to 100. I know, that’s a big number, but stay with me. Start by listing everything you’d like to do before before the zombie apocalypse. Don’t worry about how big or small an idea. Just write. If you want to win a hot dog eating contest and travel to every continent, write those down. As long as it’s something you want, don’t filter it. Spontaneity is the key. This is meant to be fun.

These are dreams. Some may never be reached, but you will be surprised at the number of things on your list that begin to materialize or turn into goals. Never underestimate the power of putting your dreams in print. I’ve seen people list goals that seem completely out of the realm of possibility only to cross them off the list within a year or two. One guy I know wanted to play golf at Augusta. In the course of a conversation he mentioned it to a business associate once and the guy happened to have a good friend with a membership that invited them both to play.

You just never know what can happen. But writing it down and reviewing the list periodically will keep it in your mind and unconsciously make you look for ways to make it happen. We naturally want to solve problems, so why not let you mind work in the background on making your dreams a reality.

If you get up to 30 or 40 things and get stuck, here are some questions you can ask yourself:

Where would I like to travel?

Who would I like to meet?

What would I like to have?

Who do I want to be?

What Next?

Now that you have your list, we have to do something with it. Go through and divide your list into categories. Arrange the list according to when you want to accomplish each item. These are generalizations, we aren’t putting them on a calendar. Here is an example timeline:

3 months

6 months

1 year

2 years

3 years

5 years

10 years

20 years

Someday

Put each item under one of those dates. Once that is done, let’s focus on the first year.

Turning Ideas Into Realities With Goals

We are going to convert these into goals. You obviously can’t tackle the whole list at once, so let’s chop it into manageable pieces.

Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into smaller bits – Henry Ford

For each item, list what actions you will have to take to reach that goal. These are your action items. Assign them due dates. This gives you a way to measure your progress.

Let’s do an example. Your goal is to write and self publish your first novel in the next 12 months. Action steps will include:

Decide on a topic

Create a plot

Choose a setting

Create characters

Outline the story

Research any background information

Write the first draft

Edit and create a second draft

Have someone edit the manuscript

Make final edits

Select a publishing platform

Design a cover

Choose sales channels

Set your price

Upload your work

Market your work

Each of those will have their own sub-list of things that need to be done. Once you have a list, you can start to schedule how long each thing will take. Some will overlap. You can be writing and researching publishing platforms at the same time. One person might be working on your cover while another edits the manuscript, etc.

Doing this breaks the goal into manageable pieces. It also lets you know if you are on track. The absolute best way to attack a goal, especially a major one, is to create a SMART goal, sometimes expanded to WHY SMART. During this process you’ll be listing your reasons why you are doing this and consequences of not finishing. When you get bogged down, and you will, come back to these reasons to get back your motivation.

Repeat

Once you are done breaking down your first project into smaller, manageable pieces, move on to the second project and do the same thing. Repeat the process again for each remaining goal you want to accomplish in the next year. It takes time up front, but will save you hours, days, or weeks as you move through the steps.

Each one of these is a living document that you can update as your project progresses. Be realistic in what you can accomplish in your set time frame. Going into this much detail during your planning stage let’s you see just ow much work is involved. It’s easy to underestimate what it will take to finish something, so these steps will give help you see in advance if your trying to do too many things at once.

Do The Work

This is where it gets hard. You have to take the next step and put your plan into action. Put your doubts aside and get to it. Over the course of the next few days or weeks, you can make significant progress by sticking to your schedule. Refer back to your goal plan for motivation.

You’ve scheduled your action steps, so schedule the time to get them done. Some people find it easier to work early in the morning before others are awake. I know other people who are “night owls” and do their best work after everyone else has gone to sleep. Find your time and try to stick to it until it becomes a habit.

Create a space where you can work. If you are fortunate enough to have an office at home, close the door and make it known to your family that you are going to work for the next two hours. You may find your place at the kitchen table, or a comfy chair in the corner. I do some of my best thinking while sitting on the back patio on a warm evening (which usually results in me falling asleep later).

It’s Up To You to Change Your World

You get one chance at life, so make it count. You don’t want to be 80 years old thinking back on all the time wasted not doing what you felt like you were called to do. Chances are nobody is going to push you into chasing your dreams. It’s something you have to decide for ourselves.

Some will make fun of you. Usually this stems from their lack of courage at pursuing their dreams because of their own lack of confidence and self doubt. I know because I’ve been there. Heck, I live in constant self-doubt. But I also don’t want to reflect on a life gone by and wonder what would have happened if I’d have gone for it.

Make today the day you chase the dream…

What is one thing you’ve always dreamed of doing, but never gone after?

If you’ve never taken the time to install security precautions, there’s no better time than now. I spent my Saturday morning reading bout and making various security upgrades with the help of the crew over at wpbeginner.com.

On Friday, they posted an article called “WordPress Brute Force Attacks, and What You Need to Do About It” that has tons of helpful information on why you should:

Stop using the admin username

Keep a strong password

Keep good backups

Use two-factor authentication (easier than you think!)

Password protect your wp-admin directory

It Won’t Take Long

It took about 10 minutes to enable the two-factor authentication using the Google Authenticator plugin on your site and the app for your phone. (I used the iOS app, but there is an Android version as well.) It took less than 5 minutes to password protect my wp-admin directory.

<What Are You Waiting For?

Stop messing around with your site security and go make the upgrades. It will take MUCH less time than rebuilding your site and re-creating all of your content. That is a lot of work to loose when it doesn’t take much to prevent loosing everything. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

Once on, you’d click a web page and wait 30, 60, or 90 seconds for a page to load. And that page was 90% text? Finally, you got DSL. At least you could be online and the phone. Then the Internet decided to become more graphic and video intensive.

For years we have been hearing about how awesome video conferencing will be. It exists, but it’s not that great. Connections drop, web traffic slows things down, and the list goes on. Even though some companies offer 50MBPS, the average U.S home Internet user is clocking in about 6.7Mbps. For as much as we live online today, that isn’t all that fast.

Get Ready For A Change

If you haven’t heard, Google is getting into the Internet business. And they aren’t playing around. Currently available in Kansas City, Google Fiber promises speeds up 1,000Mbps, or 1 gigabit. 50Mbps? That’s so 2013. If you currently have the average 6.7Mbps speed, you could be watching cat videos at 150 times that speed. That’s a lot of cats. Oh, and that 1GB connection? That’s a 1GB up and down symmetrical connection.

That Sounds Like Overkill

Imagine never waiting for a video to load again. Video chat will be crystal clear. No more bandwidth caps. Download movies in an instant.

We are already moving to cloud storage for music. Pandora and other services let us stream music without having to download. Movie streaming will be infinitely better. You think your 1080p is clear? Wait until you see 4K Ultra HD. That is going to take some serious bandwidth that most homes aren’t yet capable of. Not a problem with a gigabit connection.

Every time new tech comes out, people always think, “Wow. We’ll never need that much speed or space”. They’re ALWAYS wrong. I remember when a 250GB hard drive seemed like more space than a home could ever need. I have a terabyte drive on my desk that cost me less than $79. As we move into higher definition TV, movies, and music, we are going to need more speed and storage.

Future Proof

That’s a bit of a misnomer. Nothing technology related is future proof. But a gigabit connection will certainly delay you bumping up against bandwidth limits anytime soon. More importantly, this speed will be needed for technology products and services that we don’t even know about yet.

Speeds that fast will let us fully move into the information era. Sure, we pay bills online, do rudimentary video chat, and even do billions of dollars of online shopping, but that is small potatoes compared to what could be done.

Medical records are already moving online. Huge files such as X-Rays, CT scans and other medical data could easily be shared between doctors. Design work could move to online software allowing you to custom order products and have the design files sent to a local manufacturer who produces a product with 3D printing (on-demand manufacturing).

What’s The Cost

Sounds expensive, right? Compared to what cable companies charge today, this service is downright cheap. A gig is going to cost you $70 a month. Yup. That’s it. Currently, Time Warner cable (at least in Dallas) is charging $75 for 50Mbps. They should be scared. If you want to add TV service? $120/month for both. That’s about what I pay now for a 12Mbps connection and 200 non-HD TV channels with no movie packages. Yes, I would switch in a heartbeat.

For $70/mo you get a 1GB connection, no data caps, a 1 terabyte Google Drive account, and a network box.

For $120/mo you get a 1GB connection, no data caps, a 1 terabyte Google Drive account, a network box, full TV lineup (no add on package upgrades except STARZ or Showtime for $10), a 2TB DVR that can record up to 8 shows at once, and a Nexus 7 tablet as a remote. Seriously.

I’m moving to Kansas city.

I Don’t Need That Much Speed

There are a lot of people that don’t want that type of connection, especially if it’s going to cost $70/mo. Google realizes this. They are also showing us how Internet access doesn’t have to be super-expensive.

There are still a lot of people that don’t have Internet access because they can’t afford to spend the money on it. I get it. It is still a luxury for a lot of families. And here’s where things get really cool. If you fall into either camp, Google has a product for you! They offer a contract which will lock in your price for the standard 5Mbps connection for 7 years.

5Mbps isn’t as fast, but it’s close to what the average household currently has, so it’s not junk either. The price? FREE. You will have to pay the $300 construction fee, but even this can be broken up into 12 monthly payments of $25. For the one time fee, you can have 5Mbps Internet free for up to 7 years. This will help bring a lot of people into the information age.

Google announced Friday that they will be making an announcement this Tuesday in partnership with the city of Austin about something that will bring the city into the future. Austin almost got the initial service last year, but lost out to Kansas City. And a brief note appeared on their website about Austin getting the next Fiber access. It’s not a done deal, but a lot of people will be shocked if the announcement is anything else.

I’d much rather move to Austin than Kansas City, especially given my already existing love of the Hill Country. Perhaps it’s time to talk my boss into letting me telecommute…

Do you hate your Internet Connection? What would you do with a gigbit connection?

But last April (2012) I saw a watch on Mashable called Pebble. They had just started trying to raise $100K. By the time 30 days had passed, backers had pledged $10.3 MILLION. It is currently the most successful campaign in Kickstarter history.

What Is It?

Pebble is a watch that communicates with your iOS or Android device. It currently uses Bluetooth 2.0, but is equipped with 4.0 for future upgrades. The video above will give you an idea of what it will do in the future. I say future, because currently the functionality is limited. Pebble will soon release a developer kit so that developers can start writing apps that will integrate with Pebble. There are already plenty of discussions about just what can be done with this technology. But that isn’t here just yet.

What Does It Do?

All of your text messages will show up on the watch. You also can set up your email accounts to go to Pebble as well. This is great because you don’t have to pull out your phone to check email or texts.

Multiple watch faces are included

You also have the ability to control your music and video apps from Pebble. I discovered the hard way that it runs off a playlist, so I had to create a new one and add all the music on my phone into that playlist. Easy to do, but annoying when you have to figure that out on your own. If you start playing music from your workout playlist, you can only control those songs unless you open and start music from another playlist. However, this is nice if you only want to listen to country music or Gaelic rap. Just create playlists for each and you can stay in the genre.

I discovered from another owner on Twitter that it will also control Pandora. Since that worked, I fired up my podcast app and it controls it as well.

Controlling my music and podcasts

My Favorite Feature

I spend a lot of time in my car where my phone is connected to the car via Bluetooth. This is great because I can make hands free calls. I have entire text message conversations while driving without ever touching the phone thanks to Siri. But unless I am listening to music from my phone through the radio, I don’t get text notifications. With Pebble, even though my phone doesn’t vibrate or ding, my wrist does.

What Else Is Cool About It?

Standard size watch band. Most watches have a 22mm band and Pebble is no different. I’m not a fan of the black rubber band, so I have ordered a bright orange one for $12 on Amazon. I will likely have a few more soon.

Updates are easy. Open the app on your phone and click to update the software. It syncs straight to the phone and is fast about doing so. I appreciate not having to plug it into anything to update.

The “e-paper” display is easy to read, unless it’s dark. Pebble has an accelerometer just like your smartphone, so with a simple flick of the wrist you can turn on the backlight for a few seconds.

The charger is cool too. In order to maintain water resistance, the charger has two connections on the side that only make contact. Nothing actually inserts into the watch. The side of the watch has two magnets that match the ones on the charging cable. Apple does the same thing with laptops, but it’s a cool solution to keep the water out.

Where Does It Fall Short?

Let me start by saying this is the first generation of a complex product so imperfections should be expected. But there are a few things that need to be worked out. The phone wants to reconnect to the watch multiple times per day. I’ve read it has something to do with iOS trying to close the app because of memory usage on the phone. Maybe that can be fixed in a later update.

Battery life needs work. It is supposed to run for 5 – 7 days. As you can see in one of the pictures, the batter meter is on. That happened after about 12 hours of use without using it for music, just emails and texts. For me it’s not a big issue because I put it on the charger every night, but for those that get a LOT of texts or emails, you may find the battery giving up too soon.

Lack of apps. I appreciate the Pebble team working on getting things right initially instead of trying to develop a bunch of apps with poor functionality. But it will be much cooler when apps start coming out from developers.

Because Pebble has been working furiously to get out the 85,000+ Kickstarter editions, there are no extra cables available for purchase. I’d love to have an extra one for the office. I’ve been told they will be available soon.

Parting Thought

It doesn’t yet do everything it is capable of. But that will be changing soon with the development of apps. If you are into technology, get one. The cool factor alone is worth the $150 they are pre-ordering for (no release date as of yet). Pre-orders will start shipping sometime after all Kickstarter backers get their orders.

The company is great. Eric and the team at Pebble did an amazing job of keeping us all up-to-date on the progress on what turned out to be an 11 month journey to get our watches. There were numerous delays, but they were well explained. I appreciated not waiting in the dark hoping to one day see a package arrive on my door.

They are super easy to get in touch with. I have yet to contact customer service opting to instead reach out on Twitter. I always get a reply within a day. They also post funnies which shows me they aren’t taking themselves too seriously, but having fun with the process as well.

It’s still rare. Only 85,000 were initially sold worldwide. It took me 10 days to see one in the wild (besides mine) and that was on an employee at an AT&T store.

If you aren’t into basic black you can also choose from Grey, Red, Orange, and White.

In the Fall of 2011, Stanford began offering courses online to the general public for free. They are two weeks shorter than the version enrolled students take on campus, but offer roughly the same content and assignments. You complete live quizzes and received instant feedback on how you scored. Online students can also submit questions to be processed through new technologies the university is trying which will rank the questions and decide which should be posted for instructors to answer.

“One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his breaks, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us.

“My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was really friendly. So I asked, ‘Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!’

“This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, ‘The Law of the Garbage Truck.’ He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they’ll dump it on you.

“Don’t take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don’t take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life’s too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so…

“Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don’t. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!”

One of the problems with clearing out your email is sorting through the noise. Your email address used to be for emailing people. That probably only accounts for about 10% of my need for an email address these days. It’s hard to visit a website anymore where you aren’t required to enter an email address to gain access to most features. Some will let you login with Facebook or Twitter, but try using either of those services without having an email address. Not gonna happen.

We get a LOT of email. For this reason most of us have separate accounts. My accounts include personal, business, legacy (my really old email I still use), consulting work, and a couple of accounts for my day job. I also have an account to sign up for special offers (Woot! Restaurant birthday coupons!) and an account that I use for sites that require one but when I don’t want them contact me, i.e. junk.

Most of my personal email is handled through Gmail. It’s easy to use, integrates with other Google apps, and can import mail from my accounts I use the most. If you are a Gmailer, there is a new app that you should get ready for because it’s awesome.

Currently in beta, Mailbox is a Gmail app for iOS devices that helps you manage your Inbox. The idea is to help you keep the Inbox clean, while also helping you manage when and how you want to respond to email.

I’ve used folders in my email forever because I cannot stand to have old messages in my Inbox. But there are always things that I don’t want to deal with now, or things I want to save for later, so they get stashed in folders. Problem is, I have to remember to go LOOK in those folders. Mailbox helps me with that. Let’s take a look.

Once you have the app, you enter your Gmail info and everything comes to your Inbox. Now it’s time to decide what to do with it. If you get a message and read it, but don’t want to completely delete it, a short swipe to the right will archive it. A long swipe to the right will delete it entirely and sent it to the trash.

Your next message is something that you need to handle, but can’t get to it until later in the evening. A short swipe to the left opens a box that allows you to schedule the message for later that day, evening, tomorrow, the weekend, next week, in a month, someday, or you can pick a specific date. I recently got an email from my doctor with a link to paperwork I need to fill out before my appointment. I couldn’t do it then so I set it for later today, which made the message show up in my Inbox again three hours later.

A long swipe will let you save the message to a list. Think folders here. For example, when I get Michael Hyatt or Jeff Goins newsletters, I usually can’t read it right then. Or I may send myself a link to an article I want to read later. I add these to my “read later” list. When I make a purchase online, I add the email to my “Receipts” list until the product arrives and I forward the receipt email to Evernote if its for a product that I may need the receipt later.

Mailbox lets me apply keep control of my Inbox while also reminding me of things in my email that I need to handle. This is the slickest app I have found for using Gmail and iOS.

Currently it is in beta, but you can request an invite by downloading the app. It will tell you where you are in line and update you each time you open it. It’s a really cool feature because most things that are in beta allow you to request an invite and then wait with no idea when you will get access.

Email is a terrible way to manage your to do list, but at least this app makes it easier and more useful.

What is the thing that drives you most insane about managing email?
