David Haye sparring David Price in run up to Klitschko bout

2011-06-06T17:52:00.000+01:00

Ask any boxer to name the single most important part of training camp and I'd imagine most of them would pinpoint sparring as number one. Sparring helps us fighters improve timing and reactions, as well as familiarise ourselves with sensations and certain strategies we will try to implement on the night of the fight. It is also important to reach an ideal balance between doing too much sparring and not enough.

If you find yourself doing too much sparring, the likelihood is you'll either be fatigued by the time of the fight or you will peak too soon. Whenever you hear a fighter talk about 'leaving it in the gym' after a loss, it usually means they overtrained and perhaps did too much sparring. On the flip-side, if you choose to do very little sparring, don't complain to me if your timing is a little off come fight time.

As for my own sparring habits, I tend to fluctuate between doing lots and doing little, depending on the type of fight I'm preparing for. If I'm training for a fight that requires me doing things that don't come naturally, I will rely on lots of sparring to practice those moves and make sure I get them right. I tend to do less sparring if my opponent's style requires a more simple or clear game plan.

I have already enjoyed some great sparring sessions for my next on July 2nd and I'm getting very close to fighting shape already. In the past few weeks I have worked extensively with three unbeaten heavyweights, all of whom are slightly taller than my next opponent Wladimir Klitschko.

Deontay Wilder and Kelvin Price both arrived from America to help me out, and last week Britain's own David Price dropped into the gym to do a load of rounds with me ahead of his British title eliminator with John McDermott next weekend.

Each of the heavyweights brought different things to the table and they all kept me on my toes. Deontay was athletic, busy and fast with his right hand, while Kelvin brought lots of awkwardness and speed behind a snappy jab. Most of you will have seen David Price box already, but it's fair to say he mimics Klitschko about as well as anybody else in the heavyweight division. His jab is very good, his right hand is heavy and his foundations are extremely solid.

I've sparred David plenty at various stages of my boxing life and it goes without saying that he's better now than ever before. In addition to his great fundamentals, David now has the confidence to throw his hands freely and I've got no doubt he will shock a few people next weekend in Liverpool. I can see David looking a million dollars against McDermott. It will soon be time for new faces in the domestic and world heavyweight division and I feel Price is the man to make the move and become this country's next world-class big guy.

I will also be looking at new faces in my own training camp next week, as a fresh batch of sparring partners arrive to put me through my paces. I'm excited to see what they bring and am keen to continue working on moves and tactics that have so far served me well in sparring. By the time I meet Klitschko in Hamburg, these moves will have become second nature, and the process of finding an opening and landing my right hand on his chin will be as smooth and routine as waking up and brushing my teeth...

Peace,

David Haye,

Haye vs Klitschko

Haye and Klitschko to battle it out once and for all on Sky Box Office

David Haye will fight Wladimir Klitschko on 2nd July live on Sky Box Office.

The clash between WBA World champion David Haye and IBF, WBO, and IBO World champion Wladimir Klitschko at the Imtech Arena Which holds 60,000 seats in Hamburg is one of the most eagerly anticipated events in boxing for many years.

David 'The Hayemaker' Haye became a two-weight world champion when he sensationally beat seven-foot tall beast Nikolai Valuev in 2009, making him the first British Heavyweight World Champion since Lennox Lewis retired in 2003. He successfully defended his title against former world champion John Ruiz in April 2010 and British Olympic gold medallist Audley Harrison in November 2010, but the opportunity to beat Wladimir Klitschko has always been his ultimate goal.

With his brother Vitali alongside him, Wladimir Klitschko has been the dominant force in the heavyweight division since 2005, successfully holding his position at the top for over two generations of fighters with Wins against the likes of Hasim Rahman, Eddie Chambers, and Lamon Brewster, and more recently Chris Byrd, Samuel Peter and Eddie Chambers. 'Dr Steelhammer' as Klitschko is known, will be hoping his defence and power can cope with Haye's speed and movement, defeat to Haye would mark the beginning of the end of his illustrious reign at the top.

WBA World Heavyweight champion, David Haye, says "This fight with Wladimir is the realisation of a dream I've had since I was 10 years old. The Klitschko brothers have spoiled the reputation of heavyweight boxing, for too long and it's time for somebody to show people what it used to be about: excitement, knockouts, personality, and risk-taking. I believe I'm the guy to bring all that back on 2 July.

"There is no bigger boxing event this year. This is a fight I and all boxing fans have been hoping would happen for the best part of three years and as a result, the sense of anticipation is ridiculous. Once again viewers back in the UK will be treated to a slick production on Sky Box Office and I'm expecting tens of thousands of British fans to come out and support me in Hamburg. In years to come people will be asking each other, 'Where were you when Haye knocked out Klitschko?"

Haye will batter Klitschko dummy

2011-04-30T23:16:00.000+01:00

DAVID HAYE plans to make a dummy out of Wladimir Klitschko — and do the same to his brother Vitali before he calls it quits.

The WBA world heavyweight champion takes on IBF and WBO title holder Wladimir in a unification bout in Hamburg on July 2 in a showdown expected to generate around £40million.

Haye finally signed contracts yesterday after months of protracted negotiations when Klitschko's camp kept moving the goalposts.

The Londoner had proved he wanted the bout at no matter what cost by agreeing to every financial and fight-organisation demand made by Klitschko, 35.

And Haye, 30, said: "I'll be putting up a life-size poster of Wlad in my gym so that every time I hit a bag, do the pads or spar, it will be in my mind that I am already hurting him.

"I've put up giant posters of opponents in my gym before all of my major bouts. It drives me on that little bit harder as I can think of my powerful punches smashing them up. Klitschko will be dreaming he's sleeping on an iceberg after I've knocked him out cold.

"It's just great to put pen to paper at long last as for so long nothing was happening. Then right out of the blue the Klitschko camp contacted us and the fight was back on."

"I've never cared where the fight took place as there is only one outcome if it's in his backyard or in his front room — he is going to get knocked out in savage style."

"Everyone knows I don't plan to fight into my 31st year and that birthday comes in October."

"But I'm hoping that after I have knocked out Wladimir, big brother Vitali, who is 39, will want to try to get some kind of revenge for me smashing up his kid brother."

"Vitali will go the same way, the old man will lose his WBC title and get knocked out cold the same way as his brother."

Haye has agreed to a 50-50 split of all money even though he will be generating the bigger share.

He has also given the go-ahead to fight on RTL TV in Germany who back Klitschko, instead of ARD TV who bankroll some of his bouts. The Klitschkos also insisted on a particular make of glove and demanded a German doctor be in their corner.

Haye added: "I'm going into his backyard and it doesn't faze me one bit. I've done it before and I'm doing it again."

"I unified the cruisers by beating Jean-Marc Mormeck in his Paris home, I won the world heavyweight title by beating Nikolai Valuev in Nuremberg."

"Whatever Klitschko wants I've agreed, whatever gloves he wants, fine by me... coming into the ring second — not bothered."

"It's irrelevant as no one will really care about that stuff when I knock him out. There's a 50-50 split on everything even though I am bringing more to the table."

"But whatever I have given up will be worth every penny just to see him stretched on the canvas."

Craig David gives David Haye a run for his money as he joins the British boxer on a training session in Miami

2011-04-30T21:12:00.000+01:00

Last month he completed a grueling 62mile trek across the Kaisut Desert raising cash for Comic Relief but by the looks of things Craig David has being doing one thing and one thing only since his return – hitting the gym.

The Born To Do it singer was spotted out in Miami with boxer David Haye and Craig certainly gave the WBA World Heavyweight Champion a run for his money in the muscle department.

The unlikely pair were seen catching up on the beach and although Haye towered inches above the singer, Craig’s physique wasn’t much smaller and appeared impressively toned next to the Championship boxer

The Slicker Than Your Average singer showed off his bulging muscles in just a pair of black shorts while Haye kept his body covered in a navy Hayemaker T-shirt and a peaked cap.

It seems that the singer had joined Haye and his training team for a run on the boardwalk and the pair seemed animated as they chatted and exercised in the sunshine.

World Champion David Haye reveals his new target

2010-02-13T05:35:00.001+00:00

By Steve Bunce

David Haye is on a mad mission to unify the four different world heavyweight title belts before he hangs up his gloves in two years' time.

Haye defends his WBA version of the heavyweight championship against former champion John Ruiz at the MEN Arena in Manchester on April 3 and then he wants to take on the other champions.

"I want two more hard years in the boxing business to bring all the belts together and give the fight fans a champion they can recognise," said Haye.

"I turned pro to win the world heavyweight title and that is what I've done - now I'm on a mission to unify.

"The heavyweight title has been held by some great fighters in the last 30 years but it seems there is always more than one fighter claiming to be the champion. "Lennox Lewis, Mike Tyson, Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield all had their time as the number one, but it has been a mess for about 10 years.

"I could take the easy route like the Klitschko brothers and fight fat no-hopers and make easy defence after easy defence.

"I want to get in with the other champions, in real fights, for real money and hopefully restore pride to the division."

During the last 18 months Haye and the Klitschko brothers - Wladimir who is the WBO and IBF champion and Vitali who holds the WBC version - have been at each other's throats.

Haye was due to fight both Klitschkos last year but the fights collapsed in acrimony, and Haye instead beat the socalled Beast from the East, Nikolai Valuev, to win the title last November.

"They're an angry pair of brothers with some issues outside the ring," added Haye. "They've both tried grabbing me on the safe side of the ropes, but offered me peanuts to fight them inside the ring - that makes no sense to me!

"They have the other belts and if they have any pride left they will have to fight me - it's as simple as that."

The fight against super veteran Ruiz was agreed before Haye toppled Valuev and it is a fight that Haye knows will be harder than some insiders are predicting.

"Ruiz is an old-school tough guy and in 12 world heavyweight title fights he has never been stopped," said Haye.

"My aim is to ruin his record and take him out in spectacular style to entertain the thousands of fans inside the MEN. "I'm not taking the fight lightly because I know how hard Ruiz is, but this will be a celebration and a homecoming to thank the fans for backing me against the Beast." The Haye v Ruiz fight is the first in a series of massive fights involving the top British boxers that taking place before the end of May.

World champions Carl Froch and Amir Khan will defend their titles and Ricky Hatton returns, possibly at the City of Manchester stadium.

Haye said: "This is a great time for British boxing and I'lll make everybody proud and kickoff the good times with a stunning knockout."

David Haye vs John Ruiz Does The Quiet Man have to Knock Haye out to win?

2010-02-13T05:27:00.000+00:00

By Scott Gilfoid: In looking at the upcoming title fight between World Boxing Association heavyweight champion David Haye (23-1, 21 KO’s) and challenger two-time heavyweight champion John Ruiz (44-8-1, 30 KO’s), I think Ruiz may have to knock Haye out if he has any hopes of winning. Frankly, I don’t give Ruiz a chance in a million to win a decision in England. I just don’t see that happening. With all those screaming fans shouting their lungs out for every missed punch that Haye throws, the judges are probably going to fall in lockstep behind all the lovesick Haye fans and end up giving the decision to the 29-year-old Haye.

Ruiz has been screwed over already in the past five years, losing two questionable decisions to Nikolay Valuev and one against Ruslan Chagaev. All three of those fights occurred in Europe. The bad news for Ruiz is that he’s going to be fighting again in Europe, but this time in England rather than Germany. Hopefully, Ruiz doesn’t find himself on the losing end of another questionable decision. Ruiz deserves better.

Haye defeated Valuev by a 12 round majority decision in November 2009, in what was one of the most boring fights I’ve ever seen in my life. I had never, until that fight, seen a fighter average only 10 punches thrown per round. This is pretty much the extent of Haye’s offensive output in that fight. Many of Haye’s fans have fell over backwards making excuses for his poor offensive performance, blaming it on a hurt hand, the size of Valuev and just basic strategy.

I wish I could buy all those excuses but I just don’t believe it. To me, Haye looked terrified against Valuev and ran around the ring trying to keep from getting clobbered by the weak-punching Russian. It worked. I got to give Haye credit for that, but he really stank out the joint with his performance. Haye was supposed to be the new breed of heavyweight, someone who was going to save the heavyweight division from the dull Klitschko brothers.

Instead, we got an even worse performance than Klitschko or Valuev fight that I’ve ever seen. And I have a feeling that in defeating Valuev and capturing his title, we have traded one boring fighter for another. I hope I’m wrong about this.

Haye needs to beat Ruiz if he wants to get a big paying unification bout against the Klitschko brothers. If Haye loses to Ruiz, his dreams of fighting the Klitschko brothers will be pretty much finished. Haye is young enough to talk his way into another title match, but if he can’t beat a fighter like Ruiz, who isn’t as young or as powerful as some of the top contenders, then I doubt Haye would have much chance against another top fighter in the division.

This is why I think it’s very important that Haye beat Ruiz, so he can avoid having to find himself talking his way back into another title shot. Haye has a gift gab, and reminds me of a young Muhammad Ali with his ability talk. He doesn’t remind me of Ali with his fighting, unfortunately. I see Haye fighting more like 41-year-old Roy Jones Jr. than Ali. The same pot shot style and same chin problem.

David Haye v Nikolai Valuev as it happened

2010-01-31T21:01:00.000+00:00

The story of the fight: Valuev punches and misses. Photograph: Alex Grimm/Bongarts/Getty Images

Preamble: So after weeks of trash-talking and slick, lowest-common-denominator pay-per-view marketing, we're about to find out whether David can slay Goliath. The tale of the tape has been well-told: Nikolai Valuev, the WBA heavyweight champion, is nine inches bigger, seven stone heavier and has an eight-inch reach advantage over his opponent David Haye, who has only had two heavyweight fights thus far in his career. Haye was a strong favourite when the fight was announced, but Valuev has been backed heavily in recent days and now most bookies can't split the pair. My money is on Haye - I think he'll be too quick - but with doubts over his stamina, a small bet on Valuev to win in rounds 10-12 at 14-1 might be also worth taking.

9.10pm: Adam Booth, Haye's trainer and manager, says the mood in the camp is "calm". Asked for a prediction, he adds: "We know the challenge ahead and David is supremely confident he is going to knock Valuev out."

9.15pm: We've been told to expect the ringwalk to begin at 9.45pm, with the fight starting at 10pm.

9.25pm: So what strategy should Haye employ? For weeks he's been talking like a brash gunslinger, claiming he's planning to knock Valuev out, but surely it makes more sense to take his cue from Evander Holyfield who - aged 46 - came very close to beating Valuev by launching short, sustained attacks and then dancing out of the Russian's reach.

9.35pm: The danger for Haye is that, if he starts out too fast he might run out of juice, just like he did when he was dominating before beingknocked out by Carl Thompson. But that was five years' ago. Having interviewed Haye twice - the first time for this Observer feature - I think he's matured. If he fights smart he can win, although there are legitimate doubts about his stamina and, naturally, how his chin will react to be clubbed by a 22-stone Russian.

9.40pm: Sky have just shown John Ruiz, who in the pantheon of heavyweights is sub Pinklon Thomas standard, win his fight on the undercard in seven rounds. He's scheduled to fight the winner of the main event. Speaking of the undercard, this from Tom Pearson. "Been an utterly wearisome undercard tonight. All dull as dishwater. Very poor. Hoping the main event is epic."

9.45pm: More emails. "Isn't the old wisdom that a good little one will always lose to a good big one?" says Gary Naylor. "Haye is good, but how good is Valuev? Probably better than we think - I'm going with Valuev." You're right about the old adage, but it doesn't always hold. Just look at how Pacquiao destroyed De la Hoya last year. I've seen a dozen of Valuev fights - Eurosport would often show him before he became world champion - and I've never been impressed with his skills. Haye has the superior ability, amateur pedigree and speed - the big questions are: how will he cope with Valuev's size and how ring-rusty will he be after fighting just seven rounds in two years?

9.48pm: Not long now before David Haye's ring entrance. A few Millwall fans are singing "In-ger-land! In-ger-land!" but otherwise the crowd seems fairly calm. Meanwhile this from Gary Naylor. "I'm always sceptical when pundits claim that all a fighter needs to do is to fight smart," he says. "Given the adrenaline required simply to stand up in the ring, very, very few can conquer their emotions sufficiently to fight smart. Even the best have been caught up in the moment and fought on their opponent's terms. And if Haye fights on Valuev's terms, surely he loses?" Having spent a fair amount of time with professional boxers, including before fights, I think you're very wrong on this, Gary. Of course adrenaline plays a part. Of course fighters don't always fight smart. But most boxers learn to control their emotions. If adrenaline was that powerful how would elite soldiers carry out any missions?

9.50pm: "Let's get this party started!" announces Michael Buffer in English moments before Haye, wearing a red Hayemaker T-shirt and Union Jack shorts, begins his walk to the ring. My he looks focused.

9.53pm: With Haye now in the ring, Buffer takes the microphone to announce: "And accompanied by a live performance of Sunrise Avenue ... making his way to the ring, Nikolai Valuev." We're now into the second verse and there's no sign of Valuev. They're going to keep Haye waiting.

9.55pm: Valuev, wearing a black and gold dressing gown, finally begins his ring walk. "Having never seen Valuev fight, has anyone seen whether his chin has ever been properly tested?" asks Phil Sawyer. "I agree that Haye's best tactic is movement, but was just wondering what could happen if he gets a good one on Valuev's chin. All the best to Haye tonight - have been watching him for a few years and it makes a change for mates not to be saying 'David Who'?" I've never seen Valuev in deep trouble, although it's also fair to say that this is such a dire era for heavyweights (the Klitschkos' apart) he's not been tested by a really big puncher.

9.58pm: More Buffer. "At this time, we shall respect the homelands of both fighters with the national anthems." God Save the Queen is observed in respectful silence by the German supporters and sung lustily by Haye's fans. There is the odd initial boo for the Russian anthem but then that too is well observed.

9.59pm: "Ladies and gentleman, mein damen und mein herren, welcome to the main event of the evening ... and for the thousands in attendance, and the millions watching around the world, let's get ready to ruumbbblle!" Michael Buffer stokes the crowd up - as only he can - before outling the fighters' records. Haye, despite suggestions beforehand to the contrary, gets loud applause. Valuev, meanwhile, is booed by the English fans.

10pm: We're ready to go. Meanwhile this from Mark Taylor: "Germany has a bad reputation for backing the house fighter, as much as I'd like Haye to win I can't see it really. He surely won't knock Valuev out, and despite Valuev being outboxed by Evander Holyfield he still won on points, if Haye can match that he will certainly be in with a shout but I think the big dude will win via the judges' scorecards, they absolutely love him there. I just hope it's a good fight." I agree with you about the scoring; I'll be taking into account the home-town bias with my round-by-round verdicts.

Round one: It's a cautious start from Haye, who is content to dance round the ropes, trying not to get involved, watching and moving. I know it's Stating The Obvious 101 but the size difference between the two fighters is even more apparent in the ring: Haye will surely burn up a lot of nervous energy just constantly bouncing back off the ropes. Valuev is doing all the pressing, but not much of his punches are landing. Haye lands one good bodyshot but then is caught by a counter. Scoring rounds level is highly discouraged by the sanctioning bodies so I'd imagine Valuev will probably win the round by virtue of coming forward.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 9-10 Valuev

Round two: There were few punches landed in the first, and round two follows a similar pattern, with Haye content to frustrate Valuev, show him one way and then dance the other. He isn't able to land much leather until a cracking right hand slightly shakes Valuev with 15 seconds left of the round. It wasn't a lot, but it might have been enough to shade the round.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 10-9 Valuev

Round three: This fight is already mightily difficult to score. Valuev is pawing out the jab - paw, paw, paw - single shots that Haye can see coming, and single shots that are mostly missing. But he is coming forward. Haye, meanwhile, is spending large periods of each round sliding this way and that on the back foot, before landing the odd big shot. So do you go with Valuev's aggression, or Haye's accuracy? That round I'm with Haye.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 10-9 Valuev

Round four: "There's more aggression and better dancing on Strictly than this," sighs Stuart Bingham. Perhaps Stuart. But I think Haye is fighting a smart fight. Remember he's boxing a man seven stone bigger than him, and his plan has to be to try and frustrate Valuev, perhaps open his defences, and then try and pounce. Valuev came a bit closer to trapping Haye in the corner that round, without success, but another change in tactics - the jab to the body - was much more successful for the Russian.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 9-10 Valuev

Round five: And so it continues: Valuev stalking, Haye avoiding. "Does this remind anyone else of that scene from Monty Python's Life of Brian when the guy runs around the ampitheatre trying to keep away from the gladiator?" asks David Simpson. Valuev's jab is getting more accurate, and he put a block of punches together that - although blocked by Haye - did wobble him slightly. Haye is continuing to fight in bursts but in my mind he's not throwing enough punches and he's beginning to breathe a bit heavier too. But you could have easily scored the last two rounds 10-10.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 9-10 Valuev

Round six: "I'm sitting here conjuring up a mental picture of Laurel & Hardy and their prize fight," says Angus from New Zealand. "Did Haye remember the iron weights in his glove?" There's no sign of it yet, Angus, although he did land a good left hook with a minute to go in the round. Haye has landed more power punches, but Valuev is coming forward and throwing more jabs. I doubt Haye has thrown more than 15 punches a round, but his corner still seem incredibly confident. Adam Booth has just told him "don't get drunk on the success you've had" which seems remarkably bold seeing as Haye is fighting in Valuev's backyard and is going to get no favours from the judges.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 9-10 Valuev

Round seven: "Isn't Haye's problem that his best tactic is to avoid being hit, but no fighter has been awarded a world title by judges because they avoided being hit," says Gary Naylor, echoing the thoughts of many. "Haye has to carry the fight now - he is the challenger." True. As I mentioned earlier this is a very difficult fight to judge. Valuev is throwing but mostly missing - although he did catch Haye with a swift right-hand counter there; Haye reminds me of a brilliant circus performer who invites crowd members to try and hit him, and makes them miss, but doesn't fire back. I just fear that Haye isn't throwing enough punches and the home-town bias might kick in.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 9-10 Valuev

Round eight: The bookies now make Valuev 4-11 to win the fight with Haye the 2-1 outsider. But that was a better round for Haye, who got inside Valuev's jab two or three times, and landed. Still, the fact remains that this remains an intriguing, rather than the all-fists-flying encounter that Haye promised. "The winner of this fight? MMA," says Colm Heaney.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 10-9 Valuev

Round nine: Valuev was breathing a little heavier between rounds; Haye, meanwhile, still looks fresh and surprised Valuev - and the rest of us, I suspect - by landing with a three-punch burst. But there was very little else of note in that round. So when you score this do you go with Haye's success and defensive skill or Valuev's aggression? For me Haye won that round but the judges may disagree.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 10-9 Valuev

Round ten: "This is pish, I'm off to watch Audley Harrison's greatest fights on DVD," says Richard Jones. I think that's harsh, Richard. Valuev is much the bigger man, so it would have been foolish for Haye to go Saturday Night swinging. I agree Haye should be doing more but, as I suggested earlier, anyone who bought into the Sky hype of this being an action-fest was always likely to be disappointed. It's another difficult round to score, but Valuev definitely got close enough to land more punches than in previous rounds. Again Adam Booth, in Haye's corner, is mightily confident. "He's going to get desperate," he tells his fighter.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 10-10 Valuev

Round eleven: Again the pattern continues, like a boxing Groundhog Day: Haye slipping and sliding and occasionally punching, Valuev pawing and mostly missing. Valuev attempts to pull Haye into a clinch, but is unsuccessful - amazingly there has not been a single clinch in this fight so far. I would love to see the stats for punches landed. I'd be amazed if either fighter had made more than 10 successful punches in a round. That one they probably landed about two punches each.
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 10-10 Valuev

Round twelve: Haye continues to stick to the plan of dancing and evading. He's rarely launched his Hayemaker, or the heavy-handed bursts that won him the cruiserweight title, but then with a minute to go he lands a series of cluster bombs that have Valuev rocking. There's 30 seconds left in the round but Haye doesn't see the need to press his advantage because he thinks he is winning ... as the bell rings, Haye holds his hands up in triumph. But will the judges agree?
Guardian unofficial score: Haye 10-9 Valuev

So which way will it go? I have it level, but I was basing it on how I thought the judges, away from home, would score it. But so many of the rounds had very little scoring shots that it could easily go either way. "Listening to Radio Five Live, Ritchie Woodhall, Steve Bunce and the commentator all have Haye ahead (Bunce by four rounds) on the basis of cleaner shots and better boxing," says Patrick Foyle. That's interesting Patrick; it's one thing seeing a fight on TV, quite another when you're ringside and you can see which punches are landing and which are being deflected. We're about to find out ...

HAYE WINS One judge made it a 114-114 draw, the other two gave it to Haye by 116-112. To huge cheers, Haye picks up the belt and points to the sky. He's going to be a big, big star. He's good looking, likeable, and in a division devoid of talent is going to make a lot of money.

11pm Haye is speaking to the TV stations. "Today is a dream come true," he says. "I damaged my right hand in the second or third round so I had to take my foot off the gas and use my head to win rounds. Hitting [Valuev] was like hitting a brick wall, his head is the hardest thing I've ever hit. I'm pretty sure I've broken my hand. Tonight I'm going to party all night!" And having accomplished his dream, who can blame him? Thanks for all your emails. Best, Sean

David Haye's Boxing Biography

Needing little introduction, David ‘The Hayemaker’ Haye currently stands as the hottest cruiserweight-turned-heavyweight commodity since Evander ‘The Real Deal’ Holyfield.

Boasting the hand and foot speed of a middleweight and the power of a Mack truck, Haye scooped and unified all the major world cruiserweight titles within an explosive four-month period, before venturing to heavyweight and capturing the WBA world heavyweight championship.

A former world amateur champion as a heavyweight, Haye began his professional career as a 190 lb cruiserweight in December 2002. Blessed with a knack of ending fights in brutal fashion and intent on taking frowned-upon risks, ‘The Hayemaker’ quickly gained a reputation as a fan’s favourite.

In only his 10th pro bout, Haye tackled dangerous former IBF champion ‘King’ Arthur Williams. Former WBO champion Carl Thompson followed in his 11th fight. A shot at hard-hitting European champ Alexander Gurov arrived in Haye’s 16th contest. It was a pattern of risk-seeking that would continue right up until Haye’s eventual world title shot arrived.

“I never wanted to be protected as a fighter,” explains Haye. “It was always the intention of Adam (Booth, trainer/manager) and I to remain completely in charge of our destiny at all times. I wanted to take risks and do things the proper way. I didn’t want to hang around at domestic level for a decade and not learn anything about myself.

"I didn’t want to pick up some KFC title and call myself a world champion, knowing deep down I wasn’t. It’s better to take a risk and fail – finding something out about yourself along the way – than to never have taken the risk at all. This is something I’ll be looking to get across to all the boxers I work alongside at Hayemaker.”

Having defended the European cruiserweight title three times - the last of which was a WBC title eliminator against Giacobbe Fragomeni – Haye risked reputation, dubious decisions and the very real possibility of defeat against WBC and WBA cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck in Paris, France.

While many fighters would have shirked such an odds-against opportunity, Haye relished it. In November 2007, Haye dramatically and compellingly knocked out the feared Mormeck in seven rounds.

As well as seizing the Frenchman’s WBC and WBA belts, Haye was also crowned ‘The Ring’ magazine’s champion, an accolade that emphatically announced Haye as numero uno at 200 lbs.

“Stylistically, it was always going to be a tricky fight,” reflects Haye, arguably the hardest pound-for-pound puncher in boxing today. “Mormeck was The Man – the best cruiserweight in the world – and he had the perfect style to give me problems. Not only that but I had to travel to Levallois in Paris to do the job on a Don King show.

"None of that really bothered me, though. I knew as soon as he tasted ‘The Hayemaker’ the judges would not be needed. It was probably the best win of my career so far.”

Despite insisting that the Mormeck battle would be his last as a cruiserweight, Haye – ever the fan-pleaser – bowed to the nation’s pleas and accepted one final blockbuster at cruiserweight with long-time domestic rival and WBO titleholder Enzo Maccarinelli.

Billed beforehand as the biggest all-British showdown for 15 years and a genuine 50/50 contest, Haye made a mockery of such assertions as he swept aside his Welsh challenger in two frighteningly swift and one-sided rounds.

“I knew it was only a matter of turning up on time and sober against Maccarinelli and I would end up with my arm held aloft,” says Haye. “I was saying that beforehand and a lot of people thought I was joking – just giving them a funny line to use. They failed to realise that I was deadly serious.

"There was never a chance Enzo could have beaten me that night. He was ideal for me. He had the perfect style – tall, upright and chinny – and the perfect trainer, Enzo Calzaghe – loud, opinionated and useless. The more Maccarinelli believed what Enzo Calzaghe was telling him the easier my job became.”

Just as Holyfield stepped up to the heavyweight division and replicated his cruiserweight success amongst the big men, Haye aspired to do the same. Quickly causing a stir amid the heavyweight division’s key players, Haye looked to become the division’s most personable, charismatic, marketable and exhilarating addition since a young ‘Iron’ Mike Tyson came to the fore.

His November 2008 slugfest with Monte 'Two Gunz' Barrett signalled the arrival of Haye in the heavyweight division. Dropping the respected New Yorker five times in five rounds, Haye enthralled the o2 Arena crowd with a stunning fifth-round stoppage victory.

With the Barrett win acting as a sample of what Haye would bring the division, it wasn't long before a title shot arrived on the Londoner's lap. Despite seeing fights with the Klitschko brothers (Wladimir and Vitali) fall by the wayside, Haye instead found himself playing 'David' to WBA world champion Nikolai Valuev's 'Goliath' in November 2009. Haye tackled the 7-feet-2-inch, 23-stone Valuev in Nuremberg, Germany and, with the odds stacked against him, 'The Hayemaker' prevailed over the 12-round distance.

In a tactical and technical masterclass, Haye outboxed and outpointed Valuev, even wobbling 'The Beast' in the 12th and final round. It was the crowning moment of Haye's career to date and a win that saw him fulfill a life-long dream of lifting the world heavyweight title.

Now installed as a world heavyweight champion, Haye looks to replicate his success as a cruiserweight and unify the heavyweight titles. His next step to greatness arrives in April, as he puts his belt on the line against WBA mandatory challenger John 'The Quiet Man' Ruiz. While Ruiz may prefer to take a backseat in the talking stakes, Haye is eager to make a lot of noise in 2010 - inside and outside the ropes.
