Urgent Need! July 16 Deadline!

An urgent need has arisen connected to our work with the poor in Mali as we do our best to meet urgent tangible problems. We are focusing on self-sufficiency projects which meet the concerns of the poor and help the national church with resources.

Our current effort is an innovative and very exciting agro-pastoral project. You can read more about the nature of the project and the strategy behind it by downloading or viewing this document: The Waramajanna Project Proposal: A Self-Sufficiency Agro-Pastoral Project (Adobe Reader required).

Various studies have shown that if modern agro-pastoral projects were done on the banks of the Niger River, particularly if the “Niger buckle” were adequately farmed, this would feed not just Mali, but all of West Africa! The problem is that to this day 99% of agriculture done on the banks of the Niger is still subsistence-level farming, even as the farmer continues to depend solely on rainfall while sitting right next to an abundant supply of water that could irrigate his field. Someone has to show the way. Why not the Church? Our agro-pastoral project holds the promise of playing a part in revolutionizing agriculture in West Africa!

But we urgently need your help with a key component of this agro-pastoral project, namely the purchase of a used tractor.

A few years ago, David was interviewed by Called And Sent Magazine regarding our work among Muslims in West Africa. The result is an inspiring article which tells the stories of Muslims who have come to Christ as part of a great harvest that is continuing today - more Muslims have come to Christ in the past few years than in the previous 1,400 years combined.

Provision for One Well Received from NCN

We are grateful to the Northern California-Nevada District of the Assemblies of God and the Africa Oasis Project who have just donated the necessary funds for one of the two water wells needed for our work in Timbuktu. We believe the Lord will provide the funds for the second well, as well as for the one desperately needed in the village of Dunan in Dogon country.

Mali Missions Projects 2009

We have several congregations that desperately need a roof over their heads. We urgently need five “tabernacle” prefab structures to be constructed and put in place in 2009. Each one costs $4,000.

We have new churches that are still in need of walls. We are trusting the Lord to provide us for five of these new churches (in Bakojikoroni, Heramakono, Loulouni, Sirakoroba, and Tienfala) in 2009. Each will cost $6,000.

We need help with a strategic property purchase for a youth center in Bamako, the capital city. We have already raised $30,000, but we still need the remaining $35,000 for a centrally located lot before it’s off the market.

Linda and I want to wish you a blessed New Year 2008!

2007 was a remarkable year for the growth of God’s Kingdom in Mali, West Africa!

Breakthroughs:

We now have 62 churches; two new churches were planted in Bamako and two more in the Koulikoro region.
David was privileged to lead a Bozo to Christ a few months ago. He is now one of less than 20 believers among this ethnic group of Mali.
We also had the privilege of winning two of the 3 known believers among the Jamiseyi-Dogons.

Fourteen years ago, we helped Daouda, a construction worker, learn how to read and write, using the Bible as a textbook. Daouda didn’t however learn just his letters and numbers! He was transformed by Christ, called to ministry, graduated from our Bible School, and has been pastoring one of our largest churches here in Bamako, the capital city of Mali. Recently, Pastor Daouda was elected to be one of Mali’s Assemblies of God Executive Officers.

But the story doesn’t stop there!

Pastor Daouda’s Muslim family, formerly his persecutors, have since entrusted their sons to him to raise and to educate. We are sponsoring two of Daouda’s nephews in one of our Christian elementary schools. The boys, Dramane (12) and Seydou (9), are today Spirit-filled followers of Jesus Christ!

Lost People Seeking, Found People Transformed

Thank you for being our partners in the Lord’s harvest in Mali! As we report to you, we are reminded again that the work is about lost people seeking, and about found people being transformed, even in this Islamic context. Please consider the following:

Sidik
For two years Sidik resisted the Gospel witness, especially our insistence that “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.” His Islamic upbringing would not allow him to believe that Issa Al-Massih (Jesus) is the only way.

Believers kept him on their prayer list. In June of this year a single persistent thought kept him awake at night: “No other Name, No other Name!” He came to our church in Kouri, and, convicted of his sinfulness and of the grace of God in Christ, he gave his life to the Lord. The next day he came back with a bag full of Islamic baraka objects (amulets for protection, power, and blessing) and had them all burned.
