"I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level.

"If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy.

"I'm fortunate to have realised those dreams.

"To this day, one of my proudest achievements is captaining my country. I knew every time I wore the Three Lions shirt, I was not only following in a long line of great players, I was also representing every fan that cared passionately about their country.

Zhu Qilin, CEO of the company that runs the Chinese league, said that it is almost certain that Becks will be the CSL international ambassador, although some procedures still need to be completed.

David Beckham has joined Paris Saint-Germain pledging to play for free and donate his salary to a children's charity. Becks rejected other offers and signed a five-month contract for the French club on Thursday in a stunning move.

“It has never been about the biggest contract or the money,” said David Beckham in his press conference announcing his deal.

“It’s always been about playing football. I’ve been lucky to achieve what I’ve achieved and earned what I’ve earned.”

The London 2012 chairman Sebastian Coe has confirmed that David Beckham will have "two very clear roles" at the Olympic Games. Becks was a key figure in the bid team that secured the Games in 2005 and has been one of the most visible celebrity supporters of it in the years since.

Many had anticipated his hard work for the cause would help him win one of the three over-age player slots in Team Great Britain's soccer team but the manager Stuart Pearce opted not to take Becks.

"He's a north-east London boy, he knows what sports means in those areas, and he's probably one of our longest and truest supporters. "We are scoping a role for him at the moment... I actually spoke to him over the course of the weekend. We're working on it but you'll have to watch this space."

Sir Sebastian Coe also made it clear that Beckham's task would not be a mere marketing opportunity. "He will be in London with us and he will have two very clear roles within the Games. He will be more than an ambassador given what he has done, the commitment he has given and the amount of time he has spent with us in London on this project."

"Naturally I am very disappointed, but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me. And like everyone, I will be hoping they can win the gold."
