David Beckham didn't shine in his latest audition for the Great Britain men's Olympic soccer team in front of manager Stuart Pearce, in LA Galaxy's 1-0 defeat by New York Red Bulls.

Pearce will name his 18-man squad at the end of May and Beckham is attempting to convince him to give the Galaxy star one of the three over-age places for London 2012.

"He's coming to see a player that he's thinking of picking for the Olympics, so he would do it to a number of players," Beckham said before kick-off. "It's a little bit easier for him for players in Europe, but, obviously, coming all the way over here is good for me."

Beckham played the full 90 minutes, picking up a booking, and was annoyed by the efforts of his team who won the MLS Cup last season but are stuck in seventh place in the Western Conference after their fifth defeat in nine games.

David Beckham and Landon Donovan didn't play for the Galaxy at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium, but that didn't keep them from winning the final. CNN suspended political analyst Roland Martin on Wednesday for "offensive" tweets during the Super Bowl that some critics said were anti-gay. Martin twitted about a commercial that showed David Beckham in underwear: "If a dude at your Super Bowl party is hyped about David Beckham's H&M underwear ad, smack the ish out of him."

Martin said afterwards that he was making a joke about soccer and that he doesn't support violence against anyone although he also tweeted: "Who the hell was that New England Patriot they just showed in a head to toe pink suit? Oh, he needs a visit from (hash)teamwhipdatass."

Martin later issued an apology on his website saying he was "truly sorry" to those who felt his tweet was anti-gay, homophobic or advocating violence. "I'm disheartened that my words would embolden prejudice," he said.
