Notepad++ isn’t a programming IDE but you’ll be surprised how many people used it to view and edit source code.

One nice thing which does make coding a little more fun in Notepad++ is the built-in autocomplete (or intellisense as the microsoft visual studio users like to call it) feature. This feature isn’t enabled by default, but can be easily turned on through

Settings > Preferences > Backup/Auto-Completion

and check both the following:

enable auto-completion on each input and

function parameters hint on input

I was trying to play an .arf file today. After installing the webex player, I found out that .arf files was already associated with another media player (windows media player in my case) and as a result, the webex player wasn’t used to play the .arf file.

What happens next is what most people will usually do (for Windows users). Right click on the .arf file > Open with… and browse for the webex player executable.

Well, guess what? The installation path isn’t in program files. It’s in C:\ProgramData.

Netbeans + XAMPP + PHPUnit + Selenium All Working At Last

This post is about setting things up and getting unit testing (PHPUnit) and functional testing (Selenium) working for doing PHP development in XAMPP and Netbeans.

I assume you are already using XAMPP. The steps to installing PHPUnit and Selenium (both client and server):

1. Open Command Prompt. Change directory to c:/xampp/php/pear
2. pear clear-cache
3. pear channel-discover pear.phpunit.de
4. pear install channel://pear.phpunit.de/PHPUnit
5. pear install phpunit/PHPUnit_Selenium
6. Goto http://seleniumhq.org/download/ and download the lastet selenium server. You can place it anywhere you want. The selenium server can be started using the command java -jar pathtoselenium-server.jar
7. Install Selenium Module for PHP plugin in Netbeans.
8. Write and run your tests! Here’s the end result you’ve been waiting for!

There’s also a “Selenium Server” plugin available in Netbeans that takes care of installing the Selenium Server and make sure it’s start-up everytime Netbeans is turned-on.

Personally, I didn’t get very far with the it as I kept on getting the following error message while testing

Invalid response while accessing the Selenium Server at ‘http://localhost:4444/selenium-server/driver/’: Failed to start new browser session: Error while launching browser errors messages

The reason might be it’s using an older version of Selenium Server (2.16.1) (source) while the latest version at the time of writing is 2.25.0.

In the end, I opt for manually starting Selenium Server through a *.bat (or you can use command prompt each time too) instead of using the Netbeans Selenium Server plugin.

If you love music, you will love hot music charts. HotMusicCharts.com is a simple website made to list all chart topping songs in different countries using data from itunes, billboards, official charts, radio stations and other sources from different countries.

I still remember music charts being something that I spend time following back when I was younger. I had always wanted a site/app/something that shows me what’s the latest and popular songs were, and better yet allow me to do audio preview and watch a music video of the song if possible. At the meantime, I always wanted to create something presentable that people will find useful. And thus arming myself with the skills + messing with code and design + a few sleepless but fruitful nights, hotmusiccharts.com was born.

Here’s a peek at the user interface. I wanted to keep it as clean and simple as I possibly could.

Apart from showing what’s popular, the site also features:
- listen to short audio preview
- watch the official music video of the song
- buy the song from itunes or amazon mp3

Filter/Block Recruitment Agency Ads on Seek.com.au

Seek.com.au is Australia’s largest job portal but it’s filled with job ads posted by recruiters/recruitment agencies. Now I’m sure the whole recruitment service industry serves its purpose and some people might find them useful. But personally I would rather view job ads advertised by the companies themselves who are offering the jobs for obvious reasons (and there are many).

Since there’s nothing that I can find online that can help me filter ads put up by recruitment agencies, I decided to do something about it and created this chrome extension called “Block Recruiters Ads”

Where to go from here

1. Install the chrome extension, search for jobs on seek.com.au, and apply direct to the company that you’re interested in working with.

2. The chrome extension currently filters out most of the recruiters in Australia but I know that I must have missed out a few. If you would like to help, fill out this form with the name of the recruiter and the search result URL where the recruiter ads was shown, and I will update the extension.

It’s easy, just type is:unread and press search. This will search for EVERY email that is unread.

Search For Unread Labeled Email

I suggest that you setup filters and manage your incoming emails categorized by labels. For example, this will allow you to search for unread email labeled Business.

label:Business is:unread

Search For Unread Nested Labeled Email

As for nested labels, you simply need to add a “-” between the parent and child of the label relationship hierarchy, for example

label:Business-Marketing is:unread

Search For Unread Email in Inbox ONLY

I’m glad you asked. The inbox is by itself a label too!

So you would simply use:

label:inbox is:unread

Embedded YouTube Videos Restricted Playback on Certain Sites When No HTTP Referrer Sent

So it happened that certain embedded YouTube videos on my site were not playing in firefox while running perfectly fine in other browser such as IE, Opera, Chrome and Safari.

I was getting the following message:

This video contains content from Vevo. It is restricted from playback on certain sites. Watch yon YouTube.

To put it into picture, this is what I’m talking about.

We know that the power players in the music/MTV related official videos on YouTube are controlled/regulated by power players such as Vevo, WMG and UMG etc.

At first, I assumed that they’ve limited their videos to be watchable only on YouTube. But seeing that embedded videos do play in different browsers on the same computer, I quickly write off this case.

Long story short, my embedded videos were not playing due to HTTP referrer not being sent to YouTube. I had an firefox extension installed called RefControl that’s used to control what gets sent as the HTTP Referer on a per-site basis.

And purposely (or ignorantly), I had set RefControl long time ago not to send any HTTP referrer at all when requested.

First, I didn’t realize that HTTP referrer would be the reason. But after disabling the RefControl extension or by changing the referrer value in the extension to a valid HTTP url, YouTube videos started to play miraculously in Firefox once again.

There could be other reasons why embedded youtube videos aren’t playing on your site, the best official explanation I’ve found is this. But in my case discussed in this post, it was all due to no valid HTTP referrer sent when the video was requested.

Just a quick tip on how I solved this problem.

1. Login to Window using safe mode

2. Do a system restore. Go to control panel > Recovery and choose a restore point > Choose the drive to restore windows to (usually C:\) > Done

If a message pop ups saying that it can’t restore because there are issues with C:\ such as data corruption, it will tell you that it needs to do a chkdsk (short for check disk).

chkdsk might be able to run while windows is running, if it does, great. Let chkdsk finish. Do a restart (in normal mode, not safe mode) and see if the problem has been solved. If not, restart Windows in safe mode again and do a system restore

If chksdk can’t run while windows is running, it will tell you to restart windows and chkdsk will automatically run before Windows. Once disk errors are fixed, you will get back to windows.

As in my case, after chksdk has finished fixing C:\, Windows started up normally. I didn’t even have to restore to a previous restore point.

As for those where chkdsk hasn’t been able to fix the problem, doing a system recovery to a previous restore point would be advisable. Good luck.
