Notepad++: How To Count Words

Was trying to get the word count of an article I was editing in Notepad++ and thought that it might be somewhere in the status bar (as in Microsoft Word), but found only characters count and lines count available.

To get the word count, you will need to select all your text (CTRL+A), and goto TextFX > TextFX Tools > Word Count.

If there’s a better way to do this, please leave a comment below, thanks.

Rumors are out that “Google TV” is currently in the works.

Google will attempt to change the way people use their television sets by developing a new platform to bring the best of the internet to TV screens, according to reports.

The search giant is believed to be working with Sony and Intel to develop a system called “Google TV”, and has built a prototype set-top box in an effort to provide a better way for people to surf the web through their televisions.

In recent years, other companies, notably Apple, have tried to develop systems to allow people to access the internet through their televisions in order to do things such as download movies and television shows.

A report in the New York Times today suggests that Google’s new device could also be built into TVs and other devices such as Blu-ray players. The machine would allow people to watch their TV channels but also have better access to the internet, search, social networking sites, YouTube videos and online games.

The companies are thought to be working with Logitech, another technology manufacturer, to build a remote control and small keyboard for the system.

The new system is thought to run on Android, Google’s open-source mobile phone operating system, and use Intel’s Atom chips. It has been reported that Google has begun testing the set-top box technology though Dish Network, a satellite TV provider.

It is unclear whether any such system would be launched worldwide, or as with some of Google’s products, be designed for release in the United States only.

Web Automation With PHP & Curl & iMacros

I have been doing quite a few web automation work lately and everywhere I look, there’s always cases where curl is involved. It’s such a nice library. If you are trying to speed things up and let some software scripts handle that for you with PHP, then I would recommend you check out curl here. I would also like to recommend this useful book which contains awesome examples of web automation titled “Webbots, Spiders, and Screen Scrapers: A Guide to Developing Internet Agents with PHP/CURL”

iMacros is another nice tool for internet browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome) which allows you to perform certain task repetitively. Want to get more hits for your youtube video？ Now you know one way of doing that.

If you’re a web developer and want to do web automation testing, watir, selenium and simpletest might be something you want to look at.

Here’s a quick tip on how to download files located at someone else’s remote web server onto your web host.

Let’s say that there’s a file located on someone else’s web server such as http://www.davidtan.org/randomfile.zip

1. Open up your SSH client such as putty and connect to your web host.

2. once connected in putty, use the wget command to download files to your web host. Example: wget http://www.davidtan.org/randomfile.zip

Yup, it’s as simple as that!

I had to do this after buying a website and needed to move/download files to my own server. Although you can also download the remote files to your own hard disk, and then reupload it to your own server, it is always faster to just tell your server to go get (using wget as above) the files you wanted and get it automatically downloaded. This way, you are saving yourself time and bandwidth.

I had the occasion to travel to Manila, Philippines recently for job training and was really surprised at what I saw and experienced. Before arriving at Philippines, most people told me how unsafe that place is and be careful when I was there. It was totally untrue. I stayed at Alabang and was walking out on the streets at night and find it pretty safe. I’m sure there are slumps and dark areas in certain areas/places, but why would you get near that in the first place?

Manila is a big metropolitan, don’t ever underestimate that!

The Jeepney is certainly the most interesting vehicle I’ve ever seen so far. You should really ride one if you get the chance. It’s funny how you pay once you get into a Jeepney. You get into it, grab a seat and pass the money to the person who is next to you so that they can keep passing it on until it reach the driver. It would be really awkward for someone to walk in a jeepney to get to the driver and pay him!

Good food, nice people who speaks good American English, peaceful culture and overall a nice place to visit. In case you didn’t know, there are also lots of Japs and Koreans traveling and doing business in Philippines.

My only regrets was that my travel and working schedule was a bit tight this time and I found out too late there were all these interesting places to visit such as Makati, Pasay, Angeles City and these historical places and monuments left behind by the Spanish, Americans and Japs which I haven’t got the chances to visit yet. Words of advice? Goto Makati (higher cost though) and always plan before you travel.

And btw, the famous filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao match against Joshua Clottey is such a big thing in Philipines that there’s a saying that every pinoy will be at their home watching the match and the streets will be empty and the national crime rate will be 0% (even crooks want to see the action)!

I’ve been using the same Acer laptop for the last 4 years now and it’s still working fine till these days. I still remember back then there were naysayers referring to Acer as a cheap-made-on-asia and thus an unreliable brand. Well, the sales numbers certainly don’t reflect that, with Acer at the #3 spot for units shipped worldwide in 2009.

The top 5 are HP, Dell, Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba.

So, I guess my question is this:
Given that the specs, software, hardware, price are the same, which brand would you trust most when it comes to buying a new pc/laptop/netbook?
