A National Sales Tax: The Time is Now

“If you elect me, Senator Katherine Laforge, as your next president, my National Sales Tax will give you back true equity in the share of taxes you pay. You will no longer be the utilitarian taxpayer for the elite.” “Hulagu’s Web ? chapter 10″ The heroine in “Hulagu’s Web” is a true believer in Frank Chodorov’s compelling view that income tax is the root of all evil. Why, under our current National Income Tax system, do billions in real income earned by criminal endeavors, the underground economy and illegal aliens go totally untaxed? Why are the complexities of our tax code so onerous that only the wealthy can afford the resources, knowledge and ability to truly access expert advice on how to legally minimize their taxes? The answer to these questions is that the everyday wage earner with his passiveness, unquestioned acceptance, and fear of the taxation process has become politically impotent. His naﶥ trust in the wisdom of his elective officials has made him the elite’s utilitarian taxpayer. It’s time to move the proposal to implement a National Sales Tax out of the realm of political theatre and into reality. The idea bobs up and down during key election years but continues to meet stiff resistance inside the corridors of power. Clearly a vast lobby of Washington’s politicians, lawyers and accountants with special interests seem intent on declaring such a proposal “dead on arrival” before giving it a fair hearing. However, soon that may change. No less an authority than Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan has recently endorsed a National Sales Tax. While Mr. Greenspan has been known to easily roil financial markets by his cryptic oracles on the state of the economy, his stance on a National Sales Tax rings resoundingly clear. Speaking before the President’s Advisory Panel on Federal Tax Reform, Mr. Greenspan said he believed that a consumption tax?such as a National Sales Tax?could spur economic growth. One of his most important arguments was that a consumption tax could lead to increased savings. The reason for this is obvious. If, instead of taxing income, the government taxes spending?then consumers will think twice about what they spend their money on. Greenspan made it clear that completely eliminating the current income tax with a consumption tax would meet with tremendous opposition and involve a great deal of complex transitional issues. It’s also clear that the loopholes in the current, convoluted tax system continue to benefit the elite and industries. The proposal for a National Sales Tax is part of the President’s push for a complete overhaul of the tax system, a pledge he made in his re-election campaign. It’s clear that no idea is off the table, and this one certainly has a long pedigree. Mr. Greenspan noted that the National Sales Tax was considered back in 1986, but reformers instead chose the more politically cautious approach of working to “overhaul” the current system instead. So much for “overhauling”?the current tax code is substantially more complicated and confusing now than it was then. The National Retail Sales Tax Alliance, which supports the complete abolition of our current income tax system, gives some key figures that illustrate how complex the system has become. They point out that in the year 2000, the 1040 form alone was 70 lines long, with 117 pages of instructions. Americans spend nearly two hundred billion dollars a year in filing their taxes. The current push for an “overhaul” should do more than simply tiptoe around the elephant in the living room. It should strike a dagger into the heart of this burdensome behemoth once and for all. The current tax system has made liars out of many otherwise decent, hard-working Americans, while providing endless shelters and loopholes for the elite and wealthy. A National Sales Tax is a more equitable proposal, and would bring in greater revenue streams. Everyone who buys goods or services would pay taxes. Unlike the current system where illegal aliens can dodge their taxes by carrying on business under the table, nobody would be exempt from a National Sales Tax. This includes everyone from the honest workers to hardened criminals or drug traffickers. With the acceptance of a National Sales Tax, endless man-hours and millions of dollars otherwise spent in “audits” would be saved. The chance of property confiscation for improperly paying taxes or going to prison for tax fraud would be alleviated or at least greatly reduced. A National Sales Tax will bring many denizens back into our society as productive members and true citizens of our country. Our politicians and leaders should not underestimate the great groundswell of support that exists for eliminating the current income tax and replacing it with a National Sales Tax. Nothing taps this nation’s populist impulses like opposition to the tyranny of taxation. Whether it’s the Boston Tea Party, or grassroots organizations like the National Retail Sales Tax Alliance, Americans have always rallied against an unjustly oppressive tax burden. The idea of streamlining the current tax system, of course, has always been popular with many citizens. Americans should continue to vote and voice their opinions on the matter. It seems that all of our leaders are finally getting the message: the President, the Federal Reserve Chairman and elected officials. In the political thriller, “Hulagu’s Web: The Presidential Pursuit of Senator Katherine Laforge” (http://www.hulagusweb.com), the charismatic Senator Laforge openly embraces a National Sales Tax as part of her political platform. One of her supporters asks her an important question. “How much will that add to everything we buy?” “It probably will be around 14 to 17 percent,” replies Senator Laforge. “At first glance that might sound high to you but remember, no federal tax will be taken out of your pay, so your check will be much higher.” “Well, if you win, it will be like a revolution here in America,” she is later told. Indeed, it would be like a revolution. Critics point out that eliminating the current income tax system would require repealing the 16th Amendment. That is an obstacle but its repeal should not be that difficult. Amendments have been repealed before. For example, the 18th amendment was repealed by the 21st Amendment. The infamous 16th Amendment reads: “The congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several states, and without regard to any census or enumeration.” Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, had already proposed such a repeal a few years ago. In short, if the utilitarian taxpayers for the elite would just stand up and make their plight known to their representatives, the politicians would take note and likely accept the will of the people. Clearly, only a popular ground swell of the voting public can change this broken tax system. By putting government representatives on notice that their honeymoon with a National Income Tax is no longer acceptable, we can hopefully unburden ourselves with the intrusive, regressive and oppressive Income Tax system of today. “If the elite and publicity seeking celebrities can muster thousands in favor of Income Tax, then you, the hard working unrepresented taxpayers must come out in droves to create the million man march for the repeal of the 16th amendment and freedom from the yoke of taxation slavery.” “Hulagu’s Web Chapter 10″ Let these words from Senator LaForge be the marching orders for every American committed to a fair system of taxation under a National Sales Tax. A Brief History On Cheap Holidays To Turkey

Back in the late 1980’s the then largest independent Cheap holiday company in the UK called Sunmed secured some great little holidays to what was then a pretty virgin and relatively unknown new holiday destination. Turkey. Apart from the Turks themselves no one really holidayed there or had even considered it before Sunmed introduced their Go Turkey brochure to the general British public, and although Sunmed Holidays are long gone, in the last twenty years cheap holidays to Turkey have developed and flourished into a fully fledged holiday destination contender and positioned itself into the top three holiday destinations not only for the Brits but also the rest of Europe. Whilst the neighbouring Greeks’ attraction lies in the plethora of islands that you can choose from, the attraction of what was once Asia Minor (geographically speaking it is still Asia Minor), Turkey’s attraction lies in it’s sheer size stretching from Asia all the way down to the borders of Syria and therefore fringing North Africa. Each coast line has its own unique personality to cover all tastes and all holiday requirements you may have. The Aegean Coast of Turkey was one of the first established areas, with the Bodrum Peninsula with its myriad selection of resorts, small and large, quiet and lively with the added bonus is that transfer times from the airport are a little under an hour, which in the summer is a godsend. Further up the coast Altinkum’s metamorphosis from sleepy village to a bustling harbour town, brimful of ex-pats buying villas and apartments and actually living there has been truly meteoric. I remember begging my clients in the nineties to holiday in Altinkum and give it a chance and now within the last twelve years alone, Altinkum is one of the few resorts in Turkey that is booked at full capacity from May till October. Then of course you have what I call The Five Star City, Kusadasi where you have several kilometres worth of four and five star hotels offering Turkish All Inclusive to suit all budgets and tastes. The nearby attraction of Ephesus offers a double whammy of interest; ironically enough it was the first fully fledged Christian City in the World, the birthplace of a young Mary better known as the Mother of Christ, and of course the very famous Temple of Apollo. All this bit of Turkey may sound quite amazing but as you travel down the coast of Turkey and past the Bodrum Peninsula past the Aegean Seas and into the Mediterranean Sea you will get to see plenty more sights and sounds that definitely have that ‘Wow’ factor you feel when in Ephesus but for different reasons. The region of Fethiye for example with its very famous coast line, the Turquoise Coast and Olu Deniz in particular has acquired by now almost legendary status as the best beach in Turkey. In fact several years back it was voted to be in the top five beaches in the world, I remember been a bit dismissive when I heard that, until I went there, distinctly remembering the very loud ‘Wow’ that escaped me, I must admit I was instantly smitten! There are plenty of beaches on our little planet that have the ‘wow factor’, but Olu Deniz IS special; it is nestled in a valley, behind Olu Deniz where Hisaronu and Ovacik sit overlooking the bay of Olu Deniz and for you to get to Olu Deniz you need to drive through a very drab Fethiye City up towards Hisaronu, your right side completely obscured by any view of the sea, and then by some divine miracle as the taxi turns right at the small T section at the end of Hisaronu, you are instantly faced with this astonishing slash of turquoise that devours the horizon before you and you simply cannot see where the sea and the sky meet nor care to be frank. Barring the obvious natural beauty of Olu Deniz the other things that make it practically perfect is the lack of gargantuan Hotels offering All inclusive and therefore downgrading the area, Olu Deniz is small and compact, they have stringent building laws and it was one of the very fist resorts in the Med to adopt an Eco Tourism approach, part of the blue lagoon is completely blocked off from tourists and locals to allow the Caretta Turtles to nest. Further along the coast and further away from the wonders of Fethiye we come across the leviathan resort of Marmaris with its little neighbour Icmeler. It has long been a firm favourite with British Tourists who do not want to be too far away from the comforts of home, for instance McDonalds is a very familiar point firmly ensconced in Marmaris and the bright lights and loud nightlife of the harbour end of Marmaris calls its nightly siren song to all those who still have boogie in their hearts. Surprisingly enough despite the fact that Marmaris doesn’t really have the great beaches of Fethiye or nearby Dalyan, it still has much to offer in terms of things to do for those whose idea of anathema is staying on the beach and reading to be akin to them having pins inserted under their nails! Dalyan of course is another firm favourite especially with a select bunch of ex-pats, who had been begging the local council to purchase property there for many years, before the ban on foreign nationals purchasing local properties was lifted a couple of years ago. Dalyan has a history spanning all the way back to the times of Kaunos and apart from the geological beauty of the area, you also have the Kaunos Rock Tombs, think Rose Red Sea of Petra but in Turkey and in Rock silvers and greys. It’s also another dramatic looking resort, and frankly I hate using a generic word like resort to describe what Dalyan is, as it is an ancient town that has been around for several thousand years. With its lake and the river that runs through the town with all the Kaunos Rock tombs on one side, the water taxis can cut through the river that runs into the Med and deposit you on virgin white beaches that rarely see any souls, and as for all those film aficionados the Very Famous African Queen with Bogey and Hepburn was filmed here! The last bit of the holidaying Turkey is the Antalya Region, which was first found by the German Tourists before the Brits started to creep in five or so years ago and it is also the only part of Turkey that is open twelve months of the year, enjoying on average more sunshine a year than the rest of Turkey and extraordinarily mild winters it is an inexpensive winter getaway and a more than reasonably priced summer destination, with uncountable All Inclusive hotels both big and small in resorts and cities spanning several hundred kilometres you are spoilt for choice. Side is quite amazing and still incorporates in the city centre the old Roman Market walls and arches into its current architectural setting that bellies the incredible history of this thriving port that was once the epicentre of all trade in the thriving centre of the Middle Eastern trade Routes between Egypt, Syria and Rome. In finality Turkey has very much to offer the discerning traveller, from its rich and bountiful history to gorgeous safe beaches and plenty of shopping to keep even the most fidgety difficult traveller happy!

A Brief History of Indore, India

Indore is the commercial capital of the Madhya Pradesh state in India. It is also the largest city within the district. This city is just located along the plateau of Malwa on the northern part of the Vindhya Mountain range. Moreover, the city is the home of the administrative headquarters in the whole area of the Indore district and of the Indore division. It was even the former capital of the Indore princely state. It is also the summer capital of the state of erstwhile Central India. Indore City has a very transitional climate ranging from the tropical dry and wet as well as the humid sub-tropical atmosphere. There are three distinct seasons observed in this city, namely the monsoon, winter and summer. Summer usually starts in mid march, wherein, the city is extremely hot. Beaches and other recreational stuff are very popular in summer. During this season, temperatures are approximately 32 degrees Celsius or 90 degrees Fahrenheit even in times of very low humidity. Due to the citys strategic location on the southern portion of the plateau called Maldwa, a soothing and cool breeze in the nighttime makes up for the summer discomforts in daytime. The soothing and cool breezes during summer nights are often referred to as the Shab-e-Malwa. During the monsoon season, temperatures range from 26 degrees Celsius or 78 degrees Fahrenheit along with high humidity and sustained heavy rainfall. This particular season typically starts on the last week of June. The winter season usually starts on the 2nd week of November and are mild, dry and sunny. The temperatures drop from 26 degrees Celsius to 18 or 20 degrees Celsius or 65 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit. On some nights, the temperatures may fall very close to the freezing point. Indore City gets a moderate amount of rainfall which ranges from 35 to 38 inches or 890 up to 965 millimeters. Rain typically starts to pour down on July to September due to the monsoon on the southwest region. In terms of transportation, Indore is well-connected to every neighboring city via road, air and rail transportation. For about some time now, this city has been the road and rail transportation hub within the state of Madhya Pradesh. If you are a visitor in Indore, do not fret for there are numerous dharamshalas and hotels scattered along the city boundaries and are near the vicinity of bus stations as well as railway stations. 9 myths about Russia

Mass media’s biased attention as well as lack objective information has lead to forming some stereotypes about Russia that still come as a surprise to foreigners. We are here to tell you the truth about these myths. MYTH 1 - Russian women are only looking for passport or profit. As much talk as there has been about internet dating scams it is nearly impossible to argue against this. Yes, it is true, there are some agencies that make money on foreign men by posting fake profiles, creating situations which cause men to pay (and then sharing this money with the girls), etc. However, it does not mean that all Russian women are like that. There are plenty of ladies, who are looking for serious relationships and are interested in finding a partner for life, someone to create a family with and live happily ever after. The only thing that can really be done about it is you doing research and being attentive to your communication with the lady you like. For one thing, be sure that you use a reliable site/agency - someone that will double-check ladies for you, conduct personal interviews before listing them on the site, etc. For another, research the internet - feedback from other users will give you pretty good clues about whether there is something leery about the organization. Finally, be observant and do not be afraid to ask questions: if you are noticing some red flags in your communication with a particular lady, be sure to contact the agency and have them investigate it as well. Feel free to ask them what they do as anti-scam efforts - if they are a serious reputable organization, they will have a few things to tell you about that. MYTH 2 - Russians drink too much Well, yes and no. On one hand, alcoholism is a growing problem in Russia and some CIS countries. Many older generation people have found themselves desperate and lost after collapse of the Soviet Union - vodka is their way to escape the new and unknown. For younger people, for example, in Ukraine, it is a problem that stems from there being a chaos in the country: there are no organizations or activities that would allow young people to realize their potential, so most of their drinking comes from idleness. On the other hand, Russians can handle much more alcohol than most nations and do not become drunk fast. Vodka is also considered one of the best drinks to keep warm in winter. MYTH 3 - Russians are ill-mannered I have met quite a few foreigners who have gained such an impression of Russia and Ukraine. And indeed, mentality of people here is quite different than mentality of people in the US or Europe. Bluntness and harshness seem to be the distinctive qualities in Russians’ communication, but the truth is, most of the time it is never said to offend or insult anyone. Such bluntness can often be perceived as rude by people who come from nations that are used to more diplomatic communication and using hints to make a point, instead of saying things as they are. The only way to handle this is to learn not to take this personally and try to understand the culture. If something seems out of hand to you, it is best to ask the person you are talking to what he/she means - it will help you both avoid misunderstandings. MYTH 4 - Poor social conditions Again, yes and no. You can probably still find places that have problems with electricity and running water, but it will all depend on where you go. Villages and smaller towns tend to have more of such problems. If you visit a major city you will find plenty of Euro style hotels and apartments with all necessary conveniences. Most cities will also have internet access (at the hotels, or internet caf?s), be able to offer you nice restaurants and places to visit. One word of caution about tap water though. While it is perfectly safe for showers or brushing your teeth, you might consider using bottled water for cooking and drinking purposes. MYTH 5 - All CIS countries are a part of Russia Most former USSR republics gained independence in the early 90’s and have been developing as separate countries since then. While you will not get hit or hurt for calling some other country Russia, it is simply a matter of courtesy (and showing your cultural knowledge) if you call the country by the correct name. All CIS countries still share many cultural similarities and are still closely connected, but they do take pride in being independence. MYTH 6 - Mafia is everywhere Hollywood has made Russian ‘Natashas’ and ‘Borises’ a terrifically terrible stereotype of the country. Those “bad Russians” seem to be all over the place. The truth is - of course there is mafia, but it is not walking on the streets keeping everyone in fear. If you follow basic travel safety rules and stay away from questionable places and acquaintances (or engaging in illegal activities), you are not in danger. Nowadays, mafia lords are too busy with dealing in drugs, prostitutes, or weapons, so your modest persona of a tourist is very unlikely to present interest for them. MYTH 7 - It is difficult to get to Russia Lack of information is what makes travel to Russia and Eastern Europe countries scary. There really are no particular visa requirements for Russia: just an invitation and your passport. An invitation can be received from someone you know in the country, through a hotel or travel agency. Some other CIS countries do not require any papers at all: for example, if you are traveling to Ukraine for less than 90 days, you do not need an invitation, nor a visa. Travel to these countries has also become a lot more hassle-free these days. There is a number of options for traveling to and within the country: flights and trains are easily available, taxis or buses are also easy to find to travel within the country, etc. If you are traveling through a dating agency, most of them will also be able to offer travel/visa assistance services and take care of most of these arrangements for you. MYTH 8 - Russia is cheap It will really depend on where you travel. Some larger cities (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kiev, etc.) have been rated among the most expensive cities in Europe or the world!!! Regional centers will be less expensive, of course. However, you can count on hotel/living arrangements being at the top of your expense list. Food and drink will probably be rather inexpensive (with regard to shopping in the supermarkets), restaurants and entertainment is available for all types of budget - from $10 a meal to hundreds. Real handmade souvenirs will probably not be cheap (especially in the larger cities), so if you plan to travel to several places, it might be a good idea to buy them in smaller towns/cities. MYTH 9 - Russian brides are beautiful During my many years of communicating with the foreigners I hear about the beauty of Russian women from them in 99% of the time. Most men who come to Russia seem to be taken aback by how many beautiful women are on the streets. Add to that these women being smart, feminine, and possessing family values, and you will have some of the most amazing women in the world. We hope that you will take a chance of seeing it for yourself by meeting some of our wonderful ladies!

In one of the most audacious escapes in Brazilian history, more than 80 men have burrowed out of a top security jail to be whisked away by taxis they had booked by mobile phone. The prisoners at the jail in Paraiba state, 1,200 miles north of Rio de Janeiro, built a tunnel almost 40 metres long and 1.7 metres deep which began inside a cell, continued under two buildings and a perimeter wall, and led to a bush area outside. The authorities discovered an illumination system in the tunnel and spades made from material destroyed in a prison riot four months ago. “It was a spectacular escape - unseen before in the state’s prison system,” said an official, Vital do Rego. “They chose a curious escape route. Instead of the shortest route, they went underneath the pavilion and came out at the other side of the prison.” The tunnel was only discovered after a night guard noticed several bermuda shorts and T-shirts strewn in the bushes early on Saturday morning. According to the local paper, Correio da Paraiba, the escape was coordinated by two men in a parked car 300 metres from the prison wall, who were communicating with the prisoners by mobile phone and making sure they slipped out unseen one by one. Local residents interviewed said they had noticed a large numbers of taxis in the area all night - which were understood to have been ferrying the fugitives away. The escape is the latest embarrassment to Brazil’s overcrowded and underfunded penal system, in which rioting, police-against-prisoner violence and escapes are commonplace. Since January, in Paraiba alone, there have been at least five escapes and several deaths of inmates. In Rio at the weekend warders discovered a 20 metre tunnel in Bangu 3, a maximum security prison, although no one managed to escape. The prison director, Abel Silverio de Aguiar, was shot dead by masked gunmen in one of the city’s busiest streets last Tuesday. The escape in Paraiba had its roots in a prison rebellion in April which lasted for three days. The Correio de Paraiba said Pavilion 21, scene of the escape, was not fit for human habitation. The cells did not have bars, the stone beds were destroyed and there were no showers or taps. After the riot, prisoners refused to let workers and technical staff into the cells to fix the damage. Inmates then circulated freely within the prison and ruled without interference from warders. The jail has about 700 inmates, of which 125 were in Pavilion 21. The 41 prisoners who did not escape from the pavilion did not do so only because they did not want to, according to Mr Do Rego. So far, only three prisoners are believed to have been recaptured - one after he mugged a woman on a nearby beach. Police are heading to the Paraiba border in an attempt to stop the fugitives reaching other parts of the country. The state governor, Cassio Cunha Lima, said he believed that some prison staff had helped the inmates. He vowed to punish everyone involved.

Georgian police have seized a significant amount of radioactive material from the boot of a taxi in the capital Tbilisi. The find comes as a US government study says Washington’s plan to “clean up” the threat of dirty bombs is failing. Georgian officials said two heavy boxes containing isotopes of caesium and strontium, together with another substance, thought to be an unprocessed nerve poison, were found in a routine raid. US officials fear such radioactive material can be used by terrorists to contaminate large areas, by means of a detonation with a conventional explosive. A spokesman for the Georgian interior ministry said that a device made from the Tbilisi material would work over a 500-600 metre radius, but the contamination would go far further afield. One man was arrested in the raid on May 31. Police suspect the substances were to be smuggled to Turkey. The UN’s monitoring agency, the International Atomic Energy Authority, said that it thought the Georgian findings were reliable. On Monday, the US general accounting office, a branch of Congress which checks spending, said that the energy department “lacked adequate planning and coordination,” in initial efforts to tackle the threat from dirty bombs. The department had not worked effectively with agencies such as the US nuclear regulatory commission and the UN agency, and “there is a worldwide crisis in tracking and securing” radioactive material.

In Rio de Janeiro lashed on a series of attacks accomplished by gangsters, operating as taxi drivers. According to the police investigating these crimes, there were so-called “pirate” taxis with the “clone” number plates which are difficult to be distinguished from the official ones coming on the line. Under the victims’ stories, in some minutes after getting in such a taxi the victim is driven in favela (the city slum) or other deserted place where the robbery is committed. After some unconfirmed data, over the last two months “the gang of taxi drivers” has murdered two people.

The danger can be concealed in any of 5 thousand taxis operating in the city without the corresponding license, say the representatives of police. City authorities appeal to the inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro and tourists for prudence and vigilance and warn against using services of the “fake” taxi drivers. At the same time they could not explain distinctly how the can a passenger distinguish a “fake” taxi from the real one, as, parallel with “cloning” of number plates, the criminals make also forged licenses.

It should pointed out, that in Brazil the urban transport is quite well developed. Buses are generally quite old and not so comfortable, drive with a speed not exceeding 60 km/hour. The underground is in Rio de Janeiro, Recife and the Sao Paulo. Extension of the tube is rather slender, but it is sufficiently modern and clean. And a taxi for your own safety you can order with the help of the hotel porter or on your own by phone (taxis equipped with radio are a bit more expensive). In the light of the later events you should not hail taxis right in the streets.

As an alternative to private transport, Taxis make sense - they are great for the driver who is over the limit, and excellent for getting to places that public Transport can’t or won’t reach. You pay a premium to get the driver out of bed, and contribute towards the several licences that he and the operator have to have, but you can then leave your car at home, should you have one, or avoid queuing for the bus or crowding into the train. The client can then ride assured of an approved driver and healthy vehicle. Taxi and Private Hire licences are only issued to vehicles that have passed a full MOT test (this needs renewing twice a year) - drivers are subject to periodic Medicals as well as CRB checks.

So, a Taxi could be viewed as a “green” alternative - cars will have been checked frequently for emissions and safety, and they often carry more than the single ‘fare’ - maybe taking more than one car off the road.

If Taxi and Private Hire vehicles offset their emissions of CO2 through an accredited scheme (e.g. planting trees to compensate for carbon dioxide emissions from the business / vehicle) then they could claim to have green credentials, beyond gasoline users using diesel taxis in place of their own vehicles from time to time. However, the public may be unwilling to pay a premium in what is a very competitive market, and the bottom line is always price rather than environment. Road traffic accounts for around 10% of CO2 emissions from the UK (interestingly this is considerably more than air travel, which already has carbon levies in place on every journey), and is subject to several studies, including things like road charging and pollution taxes - we already have congestion charging and a banded road tax in effect. The Taxi sector could be seen as an easy target by legislators in order to make a green point in the future, when actually drivers and operators could be leading the response of the motoring public to the environmental challenge.

With floods, storms and shipwrecks hitting the news, the subject of climate change might soon be taken seriously by individual members of the British public - maybe taxi transport should be part of the debate, and it would be excellent to see Taxi companies taking the initiative and using environmental issues as part of their marketing strategies.

Last week, I saw a driver swerving on the road, unsuccessfully trying to control his vehicle. Funnily enough, the driver was a taxi driver! I later spoke to this taxi driver. Apparently, he was recruited to perform administrative tasks, but then there was a surge in passenger demand for taxis, so he was asked to drive one day a week.

The only problem was, although this driver had once driven a dodgem car, he had never learned how to drive a real vehicle, nor did he have a driver license!

Now put yourself in the passenger seat! Scary?

In case you hadn’t picked up on it, this story is fictitious. Whilst one may laugh at the apparent incompetence of the driver and company, or perhaps even think about how unrealistic the above scenario is, I beg your indulgence for just a moment longer…

Swap taxi driver with Email Operator. Swap the taxi company with your company.

As a consumer, customer and customer experience consultant, I have experienced my fair share of unsatisfactory email responses from companies. The website promises so much! Sharp, modern and laden with information, my surfing of the company website has ensured I know most things about the product I am contemplating buying. I have just three simple questions before I buy. “We will respond within 2 business days”, says the web form. Beautiful! It’s 10:30pm, I’ll email!

Fast forward four days: “We thank you for your inquiry. Information on all our products can be found on our website. Have you heard about our latest offer? If you buy on our website this month, we will throw in a set of steak knives! If you have any specific questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us”.

Now I have three more questions! At the time I sent the email, was I to know I was a passenger to the taxi driver with no license? Is it my fault that the company to which I sent my simple email had not trained and accredited its email response teams? Thirdly, who are this company’s competitors, so I can send my email to them instead?

Email is the most neglected customer communication channel. Whilst most companies appreciate the need for and benefit of email in the digital world, these same companies do not recruit staff with competency in written communication. Rather, email operators tend to be “poached” from the company’s pool of telephone operators. This creates a taxi driver scenario! Email operators are not trained in the specific skills required to write emails. As a result, emails are not of a consistently high quality and email sales and service is costing your company money and diminishing your brand.

The message is simple. Give your email channel the respect it deserves and offer your email operators the training they need! Don’t swerve the obligations you have to your customers! And next time you get into a taxi…

Over the past three decades we have seen most major Cities establish criteria and requirements that include minimum mandatory training for persons wishing to drive taxi cabs in the respective municipality.

In 1984 New York City initiated its first mandatory training program. Over the years the programs have evolved into an array of training programs and services for current and aspiring taxi drivers.

The eight hundred pound gorilla in the training and license world in New York City is The Master Cabbie Taxi Academy. More people get the hack license through this organization than all the other providers in the City combined.

Driving a taxi seems to be a simple concept. Taking a passenger from point A to point B would’nt seem to present too many problems. However, problems do arise that require training which for some can extend far beyond the three day minimum, to twelve months and longer.

In an industry where more than ninety percent of the drivers use English as a second language the simple abc’s take a little longer. So when it comes to the Taxi Driver Examination, a written test consisting of thirty English questions and fifty questions in taxi subjects the average applicant for a new York City Taxi Drivers License is as likely to fail the exam as pass it.

This would require the applicant to attend to his own applications and fee’s as well as pass the taxi drivers test after a three day class.

Attending a taxi school will be necessary if you live in or near New York City and want to become a taxi driver to earn a dependable living. When you go to taxi school and become a taxi driver in New York City, you can work part-time or full-time exploring one of the busiest cities in the world.

If you want to become a taxi driver, you will first need to pass the New York City Taxi Operators Exam. To study for the exam, you will need study materials from where you take your training.

To qualify and become a taxi driver, you need to be at least 19 years of age and have a relatively clean driving record. You also need a New York State Class E driving license. Licenses from Connecticut, Pennsylvania or New Jersey are also allowed as long as they are of a similar class. If you do not have one of these licenses, you need to visit the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and they will give you a New York State license.

You cannot have a probationary license if you want to be a cabbie. However, if your New York State drivers license is more than six months old, you can apply and take classes at a city approved taxi school so that you too can be a yellow cab driver.

When you become a taxi driver in the city, it is likely that you are going to meet interesting and famous people along with ordinary citizens. With this license, you can also drive any limousine or car service in New York City as well as the NYC yellow cab.

Get ready to become a taxi driver and be part of one of the most interesting jobs anywhere. And the money you will make can be most rewarding too.
