Global Positioning Systems (GPS) was originally developed by the US Armed Forces to help with naval and overland navigation. GPS uses a constellation of satellites to beam down encoded time signatures to receivers on the surface. By tracking the delay between when the time code says the signal was sent and when it actually arrived, GPS uses Einstein’s theory of relativity and four signals (three if altitude is known) to provide accurate tracking down to about two meters. GPS technology has been moving into the commercial sphere from the military since the 1990s. GPS fleet tracking systems are used in public transportation, most notably school buses in Kansas City and New York City. These systems allow school districts to know exactly where each bus is, thus improving the safety of their passengers. On flex routes, GPS gives drivers some leeway in adjusting their course to avoid traffic congestion. The secondary benefit is that it allows the school districts in question to better assess idle times, better routing algorithms and fuel efficiency. School officials and parents have a peace of mind knowing that the school buses are monitored constantly. In April 2007, a private taxi company launched a fleet of 150 GPS-enabled metered taxis (or Meru taxis) in Mumbai, India. Customers will be able to call for a taxi at to pick up at a preferred location and book in advance on the phone or internet. If a customer accidentally left any personal item in a taxi, this GPS technology can track to the specific taxi quickly and easily. All collected Meru taxi fares are transmitted back to the control centre and monitored to ensure that customers are charged appropriately. The company plans to increase the fleet to 1,000 taxis by year end. In the commercial sector, GPS is used for tracking delivery trucks and trucks used by contractors going to job sites. This allows real time monitoring of what trucks are en route and better tracking of actual mileage used (versus what’s billed for). This also increases fleet wide fuel economy, and allows employers to check the actual hours driven by drivers in a day for mileage bonuses and “drive time” pay. H.A. Sun Heating and Cooling Inc. of Bloomfield, Mich. is an example of a company that installed GPS fleet tracking system in every of its truck. The company is able to access real time information that leads to savings in manpower costs (from people claiming they were on a shift for 8 hours, when the GPS showed that they’d only driven for seven and a half), reduced fuel costs and increased productivity and efficient truck routing. For this company, the GPS paid for itself in 30 days. GPS fleet tracking system has been proven to increase efficiency and productivity in all types of businesses that own fleet of vehicles. In addition to cost and time savings, customer satisfaction is significantly improved through better responsiveness.

It is raining travel portals in India and more and more Indian consumers are booking their flights, hotels and holidays online than ever before. There are about a dozen travel sites that are in fierce competition with one another to increase market share cashing on the huge consumer boom triggered by salary hikes and more disposable income of Indian middle class. Some of the leading names catering the Indian market are makemytrip, cleartrip, yatra, ezeego1, travelguru, arzoo, travelchacha, travelmasti and indiatimes travel. As more choices are present before the Indian consumers it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to pick up the right one where they will not only get a good deal but good services as well. My personal experience is that most of these portals have very little price differentiation but the customer service, usability and transparency makes them different from one another. Regarding airfares I think cleartrip scores above the rest as they have a no nonsense intuitive interface and also give the real fare unlike makemytrip and others who try to hide the airport tax part till the last checkout page. So when you are comparing the fares don’t be lured by the low list prices because you have to shell out much more than what you see as fare. Another important advice is that unless you are very much sure about your itineraries look out for cancellation and modification charges which could take a toll on your budget. Cheap tickets always come with some inflexibility and there may be some cases where the journey date is not at all changeable. So read the fine print before committing as otherwise your good deal could turn out to be a costly affair. It is not only the charges that hurts but sometimes a poor customer service can give you a lot of pain specially when you try to make a last minute change. I experienced once such nightmare with makemytrip about 6 months back when their servers failed to send the e-ticket and I had to try for almost 2 hours to get to speak to a customer service representative to get my PNR number. I have left makemytrip since then and I am not sure whether their customer help desk have improved by this time but this could be a major area for worry for any customer who needs help. So do your own research if you are trying out a new travel portal for the first time and don’t just get swayed by advertisements. There are reviews in product review websites which are the best sources of unbiased information about service and overall experience and they are usually written by real customers. Blogs are also sources for such information which can actually provide insights about the deals or raw deals that a customer gets from the ever growing online travel booking business. For hotel prices I will tell you a trick that has worked for me many a times. I have always booked hotels and even 4 star and heritage hotels well below the lowest prices as published in these portals. What a smart consumer can do is get the reference price from the travel portals and then directly negotiate with the hotel for an even better price or some freebies (like free airport transfer) and I will tell you that it can save you up to 25%. Another common mistake that many travelers do is that they forget about the airlines that fly them and think only about the travel portals. Don’t forget to look into the airlines website especially if you are planning to take a low cost carrier. There is a chance that you can get a better deal there and then why not grab it. If you can afford to fly last minute chances are that you get killer deals directly from the airlines and so if you have the time don’t be in a hurry to book in advance. Instead wait for weekdays or weekend deals offered last moment and be ready to grab them as it comes. If you are flying main routes like Delhi Mumbai or Mumbai Calcutta chances are they you get discount prices in full service carriers in last minute as the airlines would be desperate to sell off the available seats. Lastly for flight and hotel deals airlines sites are a must visit as they regularly have good deals. Indian which may be not so fashionable like Jet or Kingfisher always have great pan India holiday deals thought out the seasons and many people don’t actually know about them. Nowadays budget airlines like Spice Jet are also offering flight and hotel deals but you need to compare with other offers before buying. So it is not only the portals that you offer you the best deal and there is no compelling reason to be loyal to only one portal. Spend some time on research and pick up the best deal whoever offers it to you. But don’t fall into the cash back trap which is offered by most portals with some credit card or the other. Take them only when you are sure that you can pay off the full bill as otherwise you will end up paying more in interest than what you save. As the portals themselves are finding it hard to strike good deals with airlines and hotels the cash back is the only easy option for them to make their prices appear attractive to consumers.

Here are requirements for getting the taxi drivers license in NYC. A NY hack license is the license needed to drive a New York City taxi. Officially, the NY hack license is called a New York City taxi operators license and it is issued by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. This license is good for driving in all five boroughs in New York City and having it allows the driver to operate a yellow medallion taxi cab. In New York City, only a yellow medallion taxi cab is allowed to pick up passengers on the street. To operate a taxi, you must possess a taxi drivers license. You must apply for this license through the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. The licenses issued through this agency for car service or limousines do not cover the operation of a yellow cab. On the other hand, having the hack license allows the holder to operate a car service or limousine. Because of this, the NY hack license is the most prestigious and valuable of all the operator licenses issued by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. Anyone interested in applying for this taxi drivers license may want to know what the requirements are. In order to apply for a NY hack license, you must be at least nineteen years old and possess a New York State drivers license that is either a Class A, B, C or E. You can also apply if you have a comparable drivers license from the states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania or New Jersey. Most New York State driver licenses are Class D. To upgrade from a Class D to a Class E, you will need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and pay an upgrade fee. There are no tests involved but you must be prepared to pay about fifty dollars for the fee. If you are really interested in getting a NY hack license, make sure you have no unpaid parking tickets or traffic summons. If you owe NYC fees for parking or traffic violations, you must either have paid them or you must have a documented settlement agreement with whatever department is responsible. This proof must be submitted to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission with your application. Another requirement is that you must be a citizen or a legal resident of the United States. All applicants for the NY hack license must attend a state certified six-hour defensive driving course. The course must have been completed no longer than six months before the date on your application. If you need to take this class, a popular source is the American Master Cabbie Taxi Academy. They hold classes six days a week. You can even register for the class online but you must attend the class in person. Besides the training and status requirements, you must meet a medical requirement. The medical form is titled Form B and is part of the taxi drivers application. This form must be completed by a licensed physician. You must submit your application for a NY hack license in person at the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, which is located at 32-02 Queens Blvd, Long Island City. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm. They also have a location on Staten Island where you can turn in your application. This location is open on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday only. The address is 1893 Richmond Terrace, Staten Island, NY 10302. You must make an appointment at this location to have your application accepted. Call for an appointment at 212-227-6324. There is an application fee of sixty dollars which must be paid at the time of submission. You must pay with a money order made payable to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. When you apply, you must also pay a fee for fingerprinting which costs seventy-five dollars. Again, this fee must be paid by money order, made out to the N.Y.S.D.C.J.S. NY hack license applicants must pass a test for illicit drugs. If you do not complete or pass this test, you will not get your license. The approved drug testing location for taxi driving applicants is found at 31-00 47th Avenue, Long Island City, NY. This drug testing center is open for business Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. You must pay for the test at the time the test is performed with a money order payable to Lab Corp, Inc. Anyone applying for the NY hack license that fails the drug test will be sent to a licensing standards hearing run by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. By Linda Orlando New Yorkers may feel that The Metropolitan Transportation Authority was the target of a domestic terrorism attack this morning when they walked out of their homes to head to work and discovered that the subways and buses in the city weren’t rolling. Transit workers walked off the job Tuesday morning because their demands hadn’t been met by the city during several days of particularly vile and angry labor talks. According to Roger Toussaint, the union president, workers “are tired of being underappreciated and disrespected.” So they decided they would disrespect the city they serve, by attempting to bring it to its knees just a few days before Christmas. Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls the strike “cowardly,” and immediately put an emergency plan into effect to alleviate the gridlock caused by the strike. He added that a strike by transit workers during the busiest time of the year is “illegal and morally reprehensible.” More than 7 million people ride the subways and buses every day during a regular week in New York City, but that number is greatly increased this time of year. The walkout could cost the city as much as $400 million a day, and will cause untold repercussions for businesses at the height of the shopping and tourist season. There hasn’t been a citywide transit strike in New York City in more than 25 years. Because it is illegal for mass transit workers to strike in New York, the bus and subway employees who are striking?over 33,000 employees?will face huge fines for participating. Peter Kalikow, the head of the MTA, calls the strike “a slap in the face” to all New Yorkers. State lawyers are headed to court today to block the walkout, which was called by the union just three hours after a midnight deadline. Toussaint said the proposed new contract with the MTA should have been a “no-brainer,” and the union feels the strike is justified. Bloomberg is urging New Yorkers to make arrangements to carpool, walk, or ride bikes to work, or work at home if possible. Meanwhile, New York yellow taxis are attempting to help ease the congestion on city streets by taking up to four passengers at a time. Many people are having trouble understanding the new pricing structure for taxis implemented by Bloomberg, with the city divided into zones. Manhattan has been divided into four zones, with a $10 fare per person for travel within a single zone and an additional $5 for traveling into another zone. The confusion hasn’t impeded the demand for taxis this morning, though. It’s Wednesday night, sitting at home, watching some quality premium cable. I know it’s premium because it costs me a lot more money than CNN. A glance at the schedule tells me one of the greatest shows in TV history, cable or otherwise, is on in a few. The Larry Sanders Show. I flip around to kill a little time, and stumble across the polar opposite of cable’s greatest triumph. “Arliss”. Ugh. By nature I hate vanity projects. In “Forget Paris” Billy Crystal plays a NBA referee. What an amazing coincidence! I hear he likes basketball. His next movie is about Mickey Mantle, who through another masterstroke, was one of Billy’s idols. I’d look for it soon on a 3 o’clock flight to Boston. Crystal is not alone on this, he just happens to be more obvious about it. Actors have fawned over athletes since the wax cylinder. Athletes share a similar interest in acting or how else could we have seen the gift that Shaquille brings to the screen? In most cases, it’s a blip. A guest shot on a show, or courtside seats at a Knicks game. The public usually doesn’t have to endure it for years on end. If “Arliss” were on broadcast TV, it would have been gone by the third commercial, but cable has a way of coddling it’s ugly stepchildren. I think in some leather-covered executive’s office, he sees great promise in a series about a smarmy agent and his wacky office staff. Or he sees free tickets from the numerous “Guest Athletes.” Robert Wuhl is a confessed sports junkie, and I’m sure any junkie would love to sit down with Dan Marino and chew the fat. I’d love to hear what is going on in Mike Modano’s head going down the ice. Actually I wouldn’t. I hate hockey. You get the point. The series itself has worn thinner each year. I checked it out the first couple of years, and marveled at how little it takes to fill a half-hour. You get a borderline sports star, itching for a SAG card, you make up a little story about him and his sport, and you swear a lot. It is after all cable. In one episode, a home run hitter is inching toward his 500th homer, and the race is on by Arliss and his crew to milk it for all it’s worth. Because he’s an agent, get it? Well, not to spoil it for you, but in the end a bullpen coach catches it and wants a whole mess of money because he doesn’t get paid as much as the slugger. See, that was a half-hour! While the stories themselves are barely above public access, what make it all the more frightening are the athletes. Their agents want to get them on the show to flex their acting muscle and show the world that Gary Carter* isn’t the only ex-athlete to make his mark in film. More often than not, you get to see that as an actor, Grant Hill is an excellent shooting guard. Roger Clemens showed us his performance in “Kingpin” wasn’t a fluke. Don’t ever ask about Juwan Howard. At some point, someone should stop this. In the closing moments of the episode before “Larry Sanders”, Arliss sent his star pitcher to a hypnotist who forces his patients to…ummm…gratify him without their knowledge. See, he did it to win a bet, and the only way to win the bet was to have the pitcher see his hypnotist. Arliss knew it meant that the pitcher would go through this, but he had to win back his favorite wooden leg. The pitcher threw a perfect game. Boy, if he only knew. Because he had to…with the hypnosis guy…and…the wooden leg. It took back-to-back Larry Sanders to make me forgive HBO for that. *1996-The Last Home Run—Look it up.

As Malaga strives towards being the European City of Culture for 2016 and the seat of communication and economic growth for the south of Spain, substantial investment has been ploughed into developing the region?s infrastructure. Those travelling into the station by train are first greeted by a newsagents and a cafeteria as they disembark. Once through the exit doors there is a luggage scanner on the left for people boarding the trains and on the right there is a Unicaja cashpoint, lockers to store luggage and phones. Beyond this is a passage lined with the four Malaga train station car hire firms, which are Avis, Europcar, Hertz and National Atessa. At the end of this walkway lies the entrance to the Barcelo Malaga Hotel and Convention Centre. The four star hotel has a fresh, contemporary design with 222 rooms, free Internet, fabulous breakfast buffet, clean, comfortable rooms and even a slide which runs from the 1st floor to the ground floor. Staying here is ideal for exploring Malaga as taxis and buses are located in front of the main exit and the trains are always on hand to take you off on daytrips to locations further afield. While these stores mainly sell clothes, cosmetics and home decoration, there are also an opticians, travel agents, mobile phone and computer game shop. Upstairs on the 1st floor is where the entertainment is centred with a 13 screen Yelmo cinema, a 3,000 m2 professional bowling alley and a plethora of restaurants and fast food establishments including McDonald?s, Foster Hollywood and Haagen Dazs, as well as more traditional Spanish fare in the form of La Taberna del Sur. Arriving via the main entrance there are 12 tickets desks and 2 information desks to the left, plus automatic check-in kiosks where passengers can print off tickets by putting in their booking reference number. It also allows people to make changes to bookings they have made online. The local trains are the Cercan?as Renfe split into the C2 trains which go towards Fuengirola and the C1 trains which head to downtown Malaga, taking in Malaga Pablo Picasso Airport just four stops from Maria Zambrano. These trains depart from the left hand platforms past the ticket barriers and the journey to the airport takes approximately 15 minutes at a cost of 1.25 euros single. However this means of airport transfer is ill-advised if travelling with a lot of luggage or with mobility issues, as it is located an arduous 10 minute walk from the terminal. To get to the station from the airport turn right out of the Malaga Airport departures hall, walk along the pavement following the signs, cross the road, pass through the car park and out the other side. Here there is a footbridge which takes you over the main road into the airport and down some steep stairs to the station. Be sure to check which train you are getting on because there is only one platform. Either check the destination written on the front or remember that trains coming from the left are going to Fuengirola, while those coming into the station from the right are heading to Malaga. If you are fit and agile and without much baggage it won?t be a problem, otherwise it is better to get the bus as even the steps on to the train itself are steep and small. The Malaga Airport buses which take you to Maria Zambrano Station are located outside the Malaga Airport arrivals hall, 50 metres down on the right after exiting. The number 19 bus runs roughly every half an hour to the main bus station in Malaga, located just round the corner from the train station, at a fare of 1.10 euros for a single ticket. Originally the journey would have taken 20 minutes but now because of the prolific road works with the new metro installation, it takes around half an hour. Once off the bus, walk down the road past the main entrance for the buses and cross over the road. Turn left and just a little way up on the right will be the side entrance to the Vialia Shopping Centre. Bus services go several times a day to Granada, Nerja, Marbella and Torremolinos, to name a few and to places further afield such as Algcerias, Alhaurin and Madrid. When returning from the bus station to the airport the stop is situated behind Bay 30, which is at the end of the central walkway and is specially designated only for airport buses. Be careful with high heels on this walkway as it is heavily polished marble and can be slippery. Maria Zambrano Train Station is open between 06.15 and 00.45 and if you have organised a car hire at Malaga Airport, there is parking in front for 1,500 vehicles. Of those spaces, 1,250 are underground and 250 are on ground level. Charges are ?0.026 per minute for the first half hour and ?0.025 there after with a maximum fee of ?18 for the whole day. Visitors travelling by long distant or high speed train on Preferential, First and Club Class get 24 hours free parking per ticket, so for a return ticket to Madrid for example it is 48 hours free parking. To reach the train station by car drive onto Avenida de Andalucia, take a right at the El Corte Ingles roundabout, carry on straight until you reach a roundabout with the Eroski shopping centre and then turn left onto the Calle de la Explanada de la Estaci?n. If you are one of the many millions of Brits expected to fly out on holiday to the Costa del Sol this year, there is a good chance you’ll be jetting into Malaga Airport. As Spain’s 4th busiest airport, Malaga Pablo Picasso Airport sees approximately 13 million passengers through its gates each year, which results in the 2 terminals (soon to be 3) getting a little chaotic especially around peak season. With this in mind, it pays dividends to know in advance exactly where everything is. So once the luggage has been collected, the main priority for most people is getting out of the airport and to accommodation as quickly as possible so the fun can start. This more often means finding the right car hire at Malaga Airport. Whether due to impatient kids, size-able baggage or the unfamiliar temperatures, trying to grapple with confusing airport signage and wade through golfers, foreign students, hen parties, as well as regular holiday-makers, can prove a trying way to start a holiday, unless forearmed with the right knowledge. Our Idiot’s Guide can ensure you move like a heat seeking missile through the swathes of people, reach your target desk and be out of there before you’ve even had a chance to break a sweat. There are currently 23 Malaga Airport car hire firms in total but only 10 of these are based directly inside the Terminal 2 building itself. To return a vehicle, there is a special entrance for rental cars which is just past the regular P1 and P2 parking entrance bays. There is no ticket to collect when entering and passengers do not have to return the keys to the original terminal-based office as there is a corresponding office for each company on one of the three floors. Sixt is the only one that has 2 offices and these are on the ground floor and Level -2. Autos Lido, Avis, Goldcar, Hertz and Record all have their offices on Level -1, while Auriga Crown, Europcar, National Atesa, Sixt and Solmar?s are situated on Level -2. These offices are also for use by people renting a car but not flying from the airport. The much smaller Terminal 1 also has 5 car hire check-in desks which are on the left as you coming through into arrivals. They are Auriga Crown Malaga Airport, Autos Lido Malaga Airport, Europcar Malaga Airport, National Malaga Airport and Sixt Malaga Airport. Most of the off-airport rental firms are located on a slip road running adjacent to the approach road into the airport called Avenida Garcia Morato. These Malaga car hire companies are Cargest, First Car Group, Global, Helle Hollis, Holiday, Malagacar, National, Niza and Top rent-a-car. Getting to these is incredibly simple as each puts on a specially-dedicated courtesy bus that either schedules runs to and from the airport every 15 minutes or uses the flight details of the customers to turn up at the right time. These buses collect from just outside the arrivals terminal by the regular bus stop which is around 50 metres down on the right after exiting the building. When returning the vehicle, drivers are advised to go round the roundabout and come back on themselves to turn right into the slip road called Avenida Garcia Morato. Las pruebas para ambas estas regulaciones consisten en pruebas del laboratorio y del camino - no entraremos el detalle sobre él sino resumiremos algo los requisitos: Pruebas del camino del cojín de freno: 1. Una serie de 0 tipos pruebas de la estandardización - frenando repentinamente bajo diversas condiciones de la velocidad y de la carga del vehículo con la puntería para probar la respuesta correcta en emergencias, el estacionamiento y diversas situaciones que frenan. 2. Pérdida de eficacia cuando está calentado - en la primera prueba el freno se utiliza 15 veces en la sucesión de probar su funcionamiento bajo diversas condiciones. En el proceso, el freno calienta. En el caso pasado su funcionamiento se mide y se comprueba para saber si hay la operación correcta después de lo cual los resultados se comparan al funcionamiento del freno cuando los frenos son fríos. 3. prueba de la Velocidad-sensibilidad - la presión se identifica en la prueba anterior de obtener una desaceleración de 5m/s2. La misma clase de prueba se repite en 65 kilómetros por hora, 90km/h y 135km/h para comprobar que la desaceleración del freno está mantenida con independencia de la velocidad a la cual el vehículo está viajando. Una vez que se terminen las pruebas se publica un número de aprobación y es obligatorio que los cojines de freno y el empaquetado contienen el número específico - ejemplo: E1. El empaquetado debe ser prueba del pisón y contener instrucciones en la lengua local donde el producto será vendido. Los cojines de freno obedientes de los estándares no sólo asegurarán los vehículos roadworthy pero también asegurarán la seguridad para el conductor y sus pasajeros cuando se necesita la mayoría. I just got off the phone with a credit card account company. I was closing a merchant account that I no longer used. A simple transaction, or so I thought.After waiting on hold for a couple of minutes (I love the on hold dialog that says “your call is important to us and will be answered in the order received” - I always say to myself, and sometimes out loud, “your call is important to us, but not important enough to staff enough operators to actually answer it in a reasonable time”), I told the operator that I would like to close my account.I was then promptly transferred to another line and waited another couple of minutes on hold. I then repeated my request to operator number 2, who then asked me for my merchant account number, business name, address, position in the company and why I wanted to close the account.I quickly answered all the questions and was then transferred to ANOTHER operator. After waiting on hold again for several minutes, I went through the same process with operator 3 as I went through with operator 2.Then operator 3 asked my why I wanted to close my account. I answered that I no longer use the account and have no need for it. Operator 3 asked if there was anything in the company’s service that I was displeased with or would like changed. I answered that there wasn’t (although I was thinking about mentioning their perpetual-hold phone system and the number of people I had to talk with to get my account closed).Operator 3 seemed determined to try every tactic to keep my business, as any good company should. But it quickly became obvious to her that I just didn’t need the account. I wasn’t dissatisfied with their service, I just did not have a need for it anymore.I was then given instructions to compose the letter/fax that is required to close my account (apparently verifying my account information three times was not enough of a security check, I needed to send in a letter as well).Up to this point I had been speaking to a very friendly operator.I was then informed that the closing date of my account (that should also be included in my letter) was five months later. I asked why I had to wait five months and was patronizingly informed that my “revolving” contract was for 6 months at a time and the next expiration was five months from now.If I canceled my account earlier I would have to pay a “$300 early termination fee”. So I had to pay $150 in monthly fees to avoid the $300 fee. The tone of the operator’s voice made me feel like she was steeling herself for a heated argument with an enraged customer.I simply said “un-huh” and nothing more. She then asked if I needed anything else, I said “no” and the call ended.By then I was a bit amused at the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde display I had just witnessed from this customer support operator and the company in general.First (as mild-mannered Dr. Jekyll) they try their best to keep me as a customer, fix any problems I may have had, promise better service in the future, lower my rates and wash my car (well, it seemed to be heading in that direction). It really seemed to me that they wanted to stay in my good graces and not part company with any bad blood between us.Then (Mr. Hyde appears) they whacked me with my choice of a $300 fine or a forced 5 months of extra unneeded service. First make sure there is no bad blood, then come up with a stupid reason for creating some in a relationship that had had no problems up to this point.Now what am I going to remember about the three years of service that they gave me? That I had no problems with them, that everything went smoothly? No. If asked, I am going to tell the story of how they tried to screw me when I needed to cancel my account.So much for good publicity. The main alternative to a traditional taxi comes in the form of Coco-taxis. These vehicles are small, three wheeled cabs. These egg shaped vehicles are generally orange or yellow and make basic commutes a unique experience. At first glance they appear slow and insufficient to meet most travel needs, but on the road these cabs move swiftly through the streets. Coco-taxis offer services for a lower price then most taxi companies. The cost is negotiable and paid in advance, and is not a set fare for services. Other varieties of taxis can be found around Cuba. The most common of these is horse drawn cabs. This rustic means of travel is often accompanied by lanterns after dark, and can provide a very relaxing commute. Many vacationers to Cuba wind up not relying on any transportation service by spending the entirety of their vacation at their resort. Cuba has many modern resorts in which visitors find that they have everything they need in or close by to their hotel. However, if visitors to Cuba want to soak up the country’s distinct culture and history, they must venture out of the confines of their resort. The taxi and rental car market in Cuba provides a steady service to tourists. All things considered, vacationers can count on these services to get them where they’re going. The variety of ways to get around the tropical island coupled with the overall reliability of the roads makes travelling around Cuba an experience that can be quite rewarding. There are limitations, of course, but these are easily overshadowed by what the Cuban system of rental cars and taxis has to offer.

One question that is not asked enough by people under stress is how to relieve stress. Unfortunately, people who are under stress tend to simply take it as a matter of course and simply accept its existence as though it was some sort of natural occurrence, or even a boon! And when people are under stress, the first part of tackling the problem of how to relieve stress is actually realizing that there is stress that needs to be relieved. Are you having trouble concentrating? Are you struggling with a project that doesn’t seem to be going anywhere? Are you dealing with people who simply will not listen to sense? Are you frustrated with the way things are going? Congratulations, you have stress. Okay, this is not really something to be congratulated on, but it is important to understand this fact. After all, the beginning of the “How to relieve stress” problem begins with recognizing the warning signs. Then, once the warning signs are seen, healing can begin. The first thing to do when you want to know how to relieve stress is to learn how to walk away. That’s right, get up, go someplace else, and just cool off. It is often vital to hit that reset button and take a few deep breaths away from the action. The work will still be there when you get back, but being there beyond your breaking point will not get it done. An overabundance of things to do will not be helped by a clouded mind, so give your mind a break. Then, once your head is clear again, you can head back and bang out the projects with the greatest of ease. Or at least more ease than when you were sitting in front of a pile of work and wondering how you would get through it all. Okay, so you need a break, you have walked away, but you are still so stressed that you are ready to pop. Unfortunately, the previous lesson on how to relieve stress has not worked and you need something more powerful. Well, you need to pull out a better method. This means that you need to simply concentrate on nothing. When stress is way too much for a simple period of walking away, you need to practice an exercise in meditation. This means sitting down, closing your eyes, and thinking about absolutely nothing. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to think about nothing, so you should think about your breathing. Take a deep breath in and feel the air moving through your nostrils, down your windpipe, and into your lungs. Then push that breath out and feel it moving all the way up from your diaphragm, up into your lungs through your windpipe and out of your nostrils. Feel every motion of the air and notice how it feels as it exits. Imagine your tension flowing out with the air, evaporating into the endless space of the atmosphere, diluting into a complete dilution of oxygen. Think about nothing but breathing and notice every moment of the experience. Then, after about 3 or 4 breaths — or as many as it takes — open your eyes. You should feel as refreshed as though you just took a quick, refreshing nap. If you don’t repeat the exercise until your mind is clear and you are able to concentrate on your work again. These activities are very effective for a short period of time, but you will also need a method for relieving stress in the long run. After all, it is taxing to notice that you are under stress and it takes a great deal of will to make that leap and push away all those feelings. Thus, you need a way to relieve stress in the long term. In the long term, the best method to choose, when you want to know how to relieve stress, is to do what you always say you are going to do: eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep at night. Yes, we all say that we will do it, but none of us every actually follow through. But, if you eat right, you will feel better during the day, if you exercise, you will feel better during the day and sleep better at night, and if you sleep enough, you will actually clear away all that fogginess that can lead to stress. So do your body and your mind a favor by taking care of those little things that you keep telling yourself you will do tomorrow. After all, today was yesterday’s tomorrow. When you want to know how to relieve stress, you should begin with a few simple methods as you slowly build up your will power to tackle the larger work of exercising, eating right, and getting the sleep you need. By doing all of these things, your mind will be cleared up, you will feel better during the day, you will sleep better at night, and you will not have to worry about stress nearly as much. After all, once you are relieving stress routinely, you won’t have to worry about how to relieve stress. Realistic Planning for Daily Meetings with several Suppliers When visiting suppliers you will want to make plans that best utilize the available time. This is even necessary if you are visiting suppliers in one of the large Chinese cities like Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. These cities are so vast that you need a realistic plan if you are going to get much accomplished. Getting Around Hong Kong Most visitors underestimate some time factors that are actually out of their control. I will give you an example for meetings held in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a city with a population of approximately 7 million people with an excellent public transportation system. Using the subway (MTR) is advisable and it should not take long for you to become a little bit familiar with it. If you know the closest MTR station to your destination, you will need to know which exit to take out of the station and then the street leading to your supplier’s office. The public yellow or green minibuses are best left to the locals. It is usually too complicated for visitors to become reasonably acquainted with them during a short stay. Once you arrive at your supplier’s office building, you need to get to the floor where your supplier’s office is located. Hong Kong is a modern city with many skyscrapers. Even after you locate the floor, it can be a small challenge finding their office. There can be as many as 20 offices on the same floor. The trouble at Lunch Time It can and does take considerable time to find supplier’s offices. Special precautions are needed if you have a 2:00 PM meeting in Hong Kong. Plan to arrive at least 15-20 minutes early because all elevators will be very crowded. At 2:00 PM the general lunch hour ends and everybody is trying to rush back to their offices at the last moment. Get there 15 minutes early and miss the rush. Knowing these details will help you to make the right plans. For instance, I prefer to arrange my first appointment after lunch at 2:30 PM instead of 2:00 PM when I am in Hong Kong. The Chinese love getting out of the office during lunch and really do not want to accept any meetings during that time. They are usually polite enough not to let you know this, but I suggest not trying to schedule meetings between 1:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Offices are now staggering work hours similar to Western societies. Part of the reason is to reduce traffic congestion. This can make it impractical to schedule an appointment before 10:00 AM. Unfortunately, any earlier and some of the people you want to attend will not have arrived at work yet. Lunch hours can start as early as 12:00 PM or 12:30 PM but that is an exception. As long as you honor the main lunch period between 1:00 P-2:00 PM everything will be fine. Keep in mind that taxis will be also difficult to catch during these times because some of the returning staff will also use taxis. Going the Distance in Hong Kong If you have a meeting in the Tsuen Wan district and your next meeting is supposed to be in Chai Wan, it will take you approximately one hour by taxi to get there. The distances in Hong Kong are considerable and take time to cover, even with their excellent transportation system. You need to consult a street map in order to avoid scheduling meetings with suppliers that are far apart from each other. My suggestion is that you contact the supplier you will be meeting with and ask them how much time you may need to get from your hotel to their place. Next, check with the second supplier that you will meet with to learn how much time you will need to reach them from your first supplier’s office. If you have meetings with suppliers in the industrial areas of Shatin, Fotan, Kwai Chung etc., you will need more time to reach your destination from downtown. On the return trip it may not be easy to find a taxi. Sometimes it does not make sense to use a taxi in certain areas. For instance in Kwun Tong. Most suppliers’ offices can be reached within a short walking distance and sometimes taxi drivers will even refuse to drive you if your next meeting is just a few blocks away. I think you get the point already. Knowing the exact locations of your suppliers’ offices allows you to tailor your meeting schedule without including unnecessary taxi rides or walking. Besides the time savings, it will also help to save substantial travel costs. The same applies to the larger cities in China. However, you have the added complication of communicating with your taxi driver. This will be very difficult if you do not have the address of your supplier’s office in Chinese with you. Your hotel can help you with that and also your supplier can send you a copy of his business card in advance. That will do the trick. Considering everything involved, you may not be able to make more than two meetings before noon and another two in the afternoon

Taxi driving in New York City, or any place is a service business. In the case of taxi driving, revenue is derived from one source, for two reasons. The basic rate of fare. This is how much a trip costs according to the posted price. This is usually controlled by a municipal organization. This is, to some degree, controlled by the driver, based on the level of service he provides to his client. No two taxi drivers earn the same amount. Earnings averages run the gamut, from less than a hundred dollars per shift to as much as three hundred fifty dollars per shift. This is net earnings, after expenses, in the pocket, before taxes. What makes the difference? The key variables are: ? Time working per shift. ? Luck can play a small part. ? Talent or skill. ? Endurance ? Money spent on gasoline ? Time spent looking (cruising) for customers ? Safe Driving (A cab in the repair shop earns nothing) Like any profession, the tricks of the trade a taxi driver develops will help as he becomes an accomplished professional. KNOWING WHERE TO GO AND WHEN TO BE THERE: By knowing where to be and when to be there the scope of cruising a taxi driver does looking for fares can be kept to a minimum. No one can limit where the passenger wants to go. This makes knowing where to go and when to go there all that much more important. As soon as a taxi driver knows the passengers destination, he has time to plan where to point and drive the taxi after the fare in hopes of finding a new passenger as soon as possible. The street hail aspect of the industry the riding public is used to, has many passengers hailing, and quickly getting in to the back seat of the taxi with no help from the driver. That being said, it still allows for a large percentage of clients to have the door opened for them. The exact amount of extra income opening a door is worth in terms of revenue to one New York City taxi driver will never be known. But, how many of those doors needed to be opened? All of them! The only question is who does the opening. Knowing this is part of being a professional. GASOLINE: By limiting how far you cruise looking for a fare a taxi driver can conserve gasoline. this will reduce expenses and increase earnings. Some drivers find free daily newspapers and give them to their customers. Some buy a stack of daily newspapers and leave them in the back seat of the cab. A small investment adding value to the customer’s experience. Some make sure to ask about a certain type of music the passenger might want to hear. A New York City Taxi Drivers License is called a “Hack License”. Officially it is known as a New York City Taxi Operators License. The license allows the holder / driver to operate a Yellow Medallion Taxicab in the Five Boroughs of the City of New York. Only a Yellow Medallion Taxicab is permitted to pick up passengers hailing from the street in the City. The Hack license, issued through The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission, is the only license for operating a Yellow Taxicab. There are other licenses issued by the New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission for car service and limousines but they can not be used to operate the Yellow Taxicab. The Hack license however can be used to operate a limousine or car service vehicle. This fact makes the Hack License the most valuable of NYC T&LC issued operator licenses, as well as the most prestigious. There are approximately 44,000 drivers carrying a Hack License in New York City today. All applicants for a New York City Taxi Hack License must be no less than nineteen (19) Years of age, have, a Class A, B, C, or E N.Y. State Drivers License, or a license from New Jersey, Connecticut or Pennsylvania of a similar class. Most licenses in New York State are Class D. To change a license from a class D to a class E one must go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and pay an upgrade fee. There will be no test but, there wiil be a fee of approximately fifty dollars. More than 120 Blackpool hackney taxi drivers staged a slow-drive protest along the Promenade against the council’s approach to enforcement. It was the second time in a year they had taken to the streets. Quality crackdowns by councils in the Liverpool area have continued, including late night kerbside checks. While many operators support the need to enforce standards, others are angry about heavy-handedness and the frequency of tests. More than 120 Blackpool cabbies staged a slow drive protest along the promenade against the council’s approach to enforcement. Trevor Boaler, secretary of the Blackpool Licensed Taxi Operator said “The council is exceeding its powers. On a Friday night, with the help of police officers, they deliberately targeted older vehicles and removed plates, which is illegal.” Trevor said: “We’re now considering legal action.” However, Tim Coglan, head of Quality Standards for Blackpool Council, denied his men were acting illegally: “Authorised officers can test a vehicle at any time. We picked this time, because it reflects the business. Friday is the busiest night. But we also check during the week.” Tim said: “The proof is in the pudding. Since we started testing in June 2005 about 63 per cent of the vehicles had to be prohibited from the road, 34 per cent received defect notices, but only three per cent were found in order. That’s our justification.” In Derby a three-month inspection campaign by the city council resulted in 27 per cent of hackney and private hire licenses being suspended. The council found that 31 out of 113 taxis were not up to scratch. The most common fault was suspension. Hackneys performed worst, private hire cars did slightly better. Richard Smalley, for the council, told the Evening Telegraph: “We’ll seek to help and assist drivers where we can to ensure their vehicles meet our stringent test, but I make no apology for carrying out these enforcement checks.” Earlier last year 300 local taxi drivers went on a one-night strike against the strictness and frequency of the tests.

A common question asked of people with experience with a taxi service is how is the best way to tip a cab driver? For some people, the thought of having to calculate a quick tip on the spot is uncomfortable. They might be uncomfortable with the math or, often times, are just afraid of appearing too cheap by seeming to put too much thought into deciding how much to tip the cab driver. The first suggestion that an experienced rider of a taxi service will give you is that tips are expected. The fact is that tips are a large portion of how a cab driver earns his income so, whenever you hail a taxi, you should expect to leave a tip for your driver. However, there are a couple of different ways that you can determine how much you should tip and how to be fair. First off, if you decide to ride in a cab, you should always estimate your fair and ensure that you have at least ten percent more than what you are guessing it to be for a tip. Around fifteen percent of your fare is the normal rate, but ten percent should be considered a courteous minimum for a tip to be offered. For easy figuring, the route that most people take when tipping a taxi driver is to simply tell them to keep the change. For example, if your cab fare comes to a total of $17.50, simply tell the driver to keep the change from a twenty, and you can be confident that you left a fair tip for your taxi driver. On the other hand, if you happen to have a very short ride, or if the total gets too close to an even bill, you don’t want to tip your cab driver less than a dollar either. The taxi drivers do work hard and deserve to be compensated for their effort. Another method of deciding how much to tip your taxi cab driver is to simply do the math the way you would as if tipping in a restaurant. In this case, don’t be afraid to ask for your change back from the taxi driver and to tip out of that change back to them. A fifteen percent tip is what would be normal for an average cab ride with no bad or exceptionally good service. If your trip with a taxi service results in some kind of exceptional service from your cab driver, tack on a few extra dollars to the tip to show your appreciation.

It all started when my plane to Cebu was delayed by 5 hours. While my fellow-passengers around were acting like enraged volcanoes spewing lava, cursing the catastrophe that befell upon us?I smiled and closed my eyes. Instantly, I felt peace. I whispered, “Lord, you have a special surprise in store for me.” And in minutes, I discovered my gift. That special surprise was Ray, a man who would bless me with his life. He also gave me key business ideas that would double my income. He greeted me with a firm handshake and a friendly smile. “I watch you on TV,” he said, “and I text my family and friends to watch you.” Like me, Ray’s flight to Mindanao was delayed for 8 hours. (All the flights that day were delayed. The airport looked like a refugee camp with people sitting on the floor and crowds begging for food from the airline personnel.) I didn’t know why, but I sensed a connection with the man in front of me. Later on, I discovered why. As we found seats and ordered coffee, Ray shared with me the riveting story of his life. I was so swept away by his experience, I forgot all about my coffee. “I went to Bible School and became a Pastor,” he said. “I pioneered a small church.” But after being a Pastor for 3 years, tragedy struck. His wife lost a baby boy in her pregnancy. The trial caused Ray to think about his family more. “It’s lonely being a Pastor,” he explained. “The problems of my flock are all my problems. But my problems were only mine! So I asked my people to pastor their pastor too.” Slowly, he delegated his roles to his congregation as he felt a need to focus on his family?especially their financial needs. His joined corporate life. For 6 years, he worked for a big company as their Regional Manager for the entire Mindanao (Southern region of the Philippines). He was earning P50,000 a month (US$1000+), a big sum during that time. But at the end of the day, he was still broke. In fact, he was in debt to the tune of P1.2 Million (US$26,000+)?including a warrant of arrest. To survive and feed his children, the former Regional Manager became a Taxi Driver. It was an incredibly humbling experience. But he learned important lessons that would change his life forever. Rey was now only earning P350 a day?a far cry from what he was earning before. But it was here where he learned how to manage his money. It was here where he learned how to live within his means. It was here where he learned how to save. Ray said, “People like to manage what they don’t have. That’s why they’re poor. By borrowing for stuff they can’t afford. During that year as a Taxi Driver, I learned to manage what I had. And I was actually better off earning P350 a day than earning P50,000 a month! Because now, I learned to manage my money.” After one year of being a Taxi driver, he borrowed enough money to buy cabs and became a Taxi Operator. But that was only a transitional step to learn how to run a business. His real goal was to be in the “money” business. Ray wanted to own a bank. So his first step was to work in a Rural Bank?without asking for a salary. He simply wanted to learn. And 3 years later, when he learned enough, Ray built his own Rural Bank. Today, his Rural Bank is going strong. So far, after 7 years, the bank has given micro-loans to over a thousand people in his city, providing them with capital for their small businesses. And with 97% repayment efficiency! Because of this, his bank is transforming the lives of the poor. He teaches them the habits of saving, investing, and entrepreneurship. Ray explained, “I ask people, ‘Do you want to prosper? What do you have? You may not have money. But you have time. Not just time, but time to learn. So use that! Join an insurance company and be an agent. Or join a company and sell their product. The important thing is to learn?and from there, branch out. Don’t get a job to earn money. Get a job to learn! And don’t start a business to earn money. Get into a business to learn! The money will follow.” He continued, “Some people start a business and want to earn right away. But that’s not wise. Starting a business is like a slingshot. You have to pull back. That means clearing the way. Take time pulling back. Because when it’s time to release, you’ll be surprised that your business will rapidly shoot towards the target.” Ray is a Serial Entrepreneur. At the back of his calling card is a list of his other businesses: a construction company, a property management company, salons, restaurants?plus a few more. “I never manage my businesses,” he said, “I pass it on to people who can do a better job. I make them part owners. That’s why I can own many businesses.” As Ray spoke, it was though I was hearing myself preach. We both have the same beliefs about money. We’re both Preachers that address the practical needs of people. We’re both Serial Entrepreneurs. And we both are fighting poverty by teaching three things to the Filipino: (1) a practical spirituality, (2) a more positive financial mindset, and (3) financial literacy. Oh, one last thing: We both love our families. At the airport, I met Ray’s lovely wife and beautiful daughter with him. I sensed the happiness in his family. It was refreshing. That day, my catastrophe turned out to be a rich blessing. Not only for me, but everyone who’s reading this blog right now. Talking to Ray made me realize more than ever before that we should never tell ourselves, “I’m stuck where I am. My life will never change.” Keep dreaming my friend. Even in the height of the summer holiday season there are no more than a handful of people to be seen on them. The mountain landscape of the Messinian Mani is simple stunning and is dominated by Taygetos, one of the largest mountain ranges in the Peloponnese. Whereas the Messinian peninsular has rolling hills and fertile valleys considered to be the market garden and wine centre of Greece. Messinia is an ideal place to relax and go for walks. Wander off the beaten track into the old hill towns and discover the true beauty of the region. A world apart from the islands, the beautiful and sparsely populated the Peloponnese is a bastion of disappearing Greek village life. The rural villages in this area are beautifully authentic, traditional and spread out. The local villagers are friendly and welcoming, often plying new tourists with gifts of wine and oranges. The City of Kalamata Kalamata is positioned at the head of the crystal clear Messinian Bay, between the Mani and Messini peninsulas and Sparta to the north. This makes Kalamata an ideal base from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding areas. The capital and chief port of Messinia, Kalamata is the land of the Kalamatianos dance and the silk kerchief. Of succulent black olives, honeyed figs and the sesame-covered sweet called pastelli, which can all be sampled at the immense new market near the bus station. Kalamata market is a collection of meats, cheese, and fruit shops as well as a daily farmers market Kalamata has three districts; the seafront, the residential quarter with its strict grid plan and the old town with its wandering narrow streets. The seafront has all the attributes of a resort: hotels, cafes restaurants, ice cream parlours and bars, but it is fairly low key compared to other towns. The beach is clean and the water is clear and safe for swimming in. Another lovely attraction is the train park at the end of Aristomemous street. It has shady trees, cafes, a performance area, a duck pound, and ice cream parlour in the converted station. Antique trains are displayed on the tracks. Just off the water front is the Kalamata School of Fine Arts which exhibits the work of Greek Artists. The residential quarter was rebuilt after the 1986 earthquake that killed 20 people and left 12,000 homeless The charming old town is dominated by the 13th century Frankish fortress built by Geoffrey de Villehardouin which rises above Kalamata. On the north side of the citadel there is a small Byzantine church, dedicated to the Virgin of Kalomata (of the good eye), from which the town may have acquired its name. From the fortress you can survey the expanse of sea below with its sandy and pebbly shores or turn your gaze upon the deep green plain, the “happy land” of the ancients. The old city with its busy streets and shops reaches out underneath the fortress. Here you will find the Byzantine church of the Virgin Ypapanti and the convent of the Kalograies, where the nuns are famous for weaving and embroidering the Kalamata silks. There are many churches in town, the oldest being the historic church of Agii Apostoli (13th c.), where the Greek Revolution against the Turks was formally declared on March 23, 1821. And the Benaki Museum displays the archaeological remains from the War of Independence. It also presents a small collection of folklore and fine art exhibits and a library containing 60.000 volumes. Every summer cultural events like concerts featuring jazz, rock and classical Greek plays put on by the Kalamata theatre are held in the amphitheatre of the fortress. In the evening, the town comes alive, especially along the waterfront which is lined with tavernas, seafood restaurants and rotisseries serving local dishes and drinks, fresh fish, roast suckling pig and chicken, sausages, cheese, olives, retsina and ralki. The emphasis in this area is concentrated on good company and wine. Shopping: Local arts and crafts, wine and clothes are good buys. Days out: Hire a boat for a trip around the Messinian Gulf, or rent a car and travel around the Messinia peninsular Events: Arrange to watch a show at the internationally acclaimed Kalamata Dance Festival, held every summer at the Kalamata Castle, above the town. Travel Information How to get to Messinia Kalamata airport is served by charter flights from the UK, currently on Sundays, from Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and East Midlands. Alternatively you can fly to Athens and take an air-conditioned coach to Kalamata (four hours). The drive from the south of England to here takes about four days with ferry from Ancona to Patras being the easiest. A great drive! Travel Suggestions There are many different website and discount travel companies who offer cheap charter flights. You can simply type “charter flights to Kalamata” into a search engine on the website or try some of the sites or companies listed below. The charter flights run from beginning of May to mid October and go from Gatwick, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and East Midlands. Scheduled flights to Athens go mainly from Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton although there are flights from many regional airports (mainly with British Airways). You can book online at their website www.ba.com and they often have competitive fares. www.easyjet.com is also often very competitive with fares from Luton and Gatwick. Olympic airlines are also very good and you can book direct with them at ww.olympicairlines.com To give you an idea of cost for travel midsummer, a return charter flight from Gatwick to Kalamata averages ?230. A return flight on Easyjet to Athens is around ?140. A scheduled return flight to Athens on British Airways averages ?170. Prices do vary, dependent on how much in advance you book and the time of year you travel. Bargains are often available! Buses: Buses from Athens to Kalamata run every hour in the mornings and every 2 hours in the afternoon, costing approx. ?15 one way. Car Hire: It is possible to book car hire in advance which may be collected at either Kalamata airport or Athens airport. Taxis: There are always numerous taxis waiting at Kalamata airport and Athens airport to take you to your holiday accommodation. Taxis from Athens cost approx. ?70 from Athens to Kalamata (although you may have to share with other people. This article is about the holiday letting market in Prague and how to get the most from it. When booking a city break or vacation in Prague most people immediately consider hotels with a recognisable brand. This is fine and you will no doubt have a great time staying there - but at a price! If 3 couples are travelling together and staying in 3 hotel rooms you could typically pay up to $600 plus taxes for the group - PER NIGHT! The same quality of accommodation in a Prague holiday apartment will normally cost $120 per night. Just think how much more beer, or wooden toys or boat trips down the Vltava you can buy with that! Where to Stay? For obvious reasons many people are attracted to the Old Town Square or the immediate vicinity to the Charles Bridge. If you are thinking about this then consider the following: Stag and Hen parties congregate in these areas and can be very noisy, particularly late at night. Czechs congregate here for key sporting events normally shown on Huge TV screens - check you dates carefully. Pickpockets and street prostitutes frequent these areas. Prague city centre is very small and most places are either within walking distance or are served by excellent public transport links (metro and trams). Hotels and Apartments are generally more expensive in these areas. There are many other areas of Prague that are quieter, cheaper and well connected to the rest of the city. One of the most popular areas in my experience is Vinohrady (the Royal Vineyard). The architecture is fantastic with a real caf?(c) society. It is a 10-15 minute walk away from Wenceslas Square and well served by public transport. Two outstanding new developments have recently been built in Vinohrady and there are many holiday apartments available. These are the Zvonarka and Korunni Dvur developments. The apartments are generally furnished to a 4 star standard with swimming pools and fitness facilities available either for free or a small charge. These are well worth considering over and above a small, drafty, noisy Old Town apartment. Other pitfalls There are thousands of apartments available for short term holiday and vacation rental. But choose your apartment carefully! Following entry to the Czech Republic there has been a great deal of investment into this market from outside of the Czech Republic. It is easier than ever before to buy and mortgages have become available to non-Czech nationals for the first time - and at reasonable rates. These are normally furnished to a high standard and in good, safe locations and add to the stock of quality Czech owned apartments. There are also a large number of ‘protected rent’ apartments that are sublet illegally. These are much older and the ‘owners’ spend much less on furnishings and maintenance because they are letting the flats illegally. Protected rents were intended to provide affordable accommodation to Czechs during the communist period and in the future these are expected to be phased out. But how can you tell what the apartment will really be like from a few thumbnail pictures? The best way is use a reputable website such as praguerental.com to choose your property. These apartments are all vetted and are in well furnished properties in safe, central locations. You can reserve the apartment with a small deposit and be sure of local English speaking support on arrival in Prague. Holiday Rental Checklist Know the TOTAL price of the booking at the time of booking an insist on email confirmation Agree Check in and Check out times in advance. You will normally be asked to check out earlier than a hotel so that the apartment can be cleaned in advance of the next guests arriving. It is always worth asking for a late check out. Most owners will agree to this if they have no guests arriving that day. Make sure you discuss this in advance though as the cleaner will need to be notified. Extras. Normally airport transfer can be added to the cost of the booking for reasonable rates. Anyone who has ever visited Venice will know the problem: the Grand Canal is horrendously, perilously overcrowded. Gondolas rear and plunge alarmingly in the wake of vaporetti powering from one bank of the canal to the other. Water taxis swerve round lumbering barges, laden with everything from tourist baggage to household garbage. And, every so often, streaking through the chaos comes a river ambulance or police launch. Now, the gondoliers, the most traditional of Venice’s canal-users, have had enough and have announced a demonstration next Sunday against the congestion of the waterways. ‘We can’t go on like this,’ said Roberto Lupi, a spokesman for the gondoliers. ‘Urgent measures are needed to put an immediate stop to this insane traffic.’ The boatmen say they are taking action, not just for their own safety, but for that of the thousands of foreign and Italian tourists who pay to drift through the watery city aboard a gondola. The decision to protest was taken after a one-year-old Dutch child came close to drowning last week when he and his entire family were tipped into the Grand Canal following a collision between a gondola and a vaporetto. Seven people have died in accidents along the two and a half mile canal since 1992. According to the head of the gondoliers’ association, Franco Vianello Moro, waterborne traffic in Venice has soared 30 per cent in the past two years. On an average day some 2,000 vessels now use the Grand Canal. The Mayor of Venice, Paolo Costa, acknowledged that ’something needs to be done’. But it will not be easy to find a solution, because so many vested interests are in play. Venice’s licensed gondolas - there are more than 400 - account for only 6 per cent of its canal traffic. In addition, there are about 150 vaporetti and more than 300 water taxis. On top of that come public service vessels and an unknown number of privately owned boats, most of them used to transport goods. Costa said a solution would depend on everyone concerned making compromises. But, so far, there was no sign of that happening. ‘All that anyone thinks of is defending his or her own position and attacking that of the others,’ he complained. The city council itself, though, is coming under critical scrutiny for allowing the crisis to reach this stage. It has not so far clamped down on unlicensed ‘pirate’ water taxis which account for about one of ten of those who ply their trade on the lagoon. The city authorities recently built a string of cabins at canal junctions from which police officers could identify and penalise offenders. They have been equipped with air conditioning so that the officers do not suffer in the oppressive heat of a Venice summer. But when a reporter from the newspaper La Repubblica last week travelled the length of the Grand Canal he found every single cabin empty. Meanwhile the gondoliers are aiming to create maximum effect by staging their demonstration on the day of the annual Regatta Storica, a nationally televised event in which the gondoliers race lighter, faster gondolini . Already a huge banner has gone up in Saint Mark’s Square bearing the words “Stop the Wave-making Engines!”. The war of the Grand Canal has begun.
