So Much To Tell

My #1 Fan

RIP

On January 2, my grandmother passed away suddenly. She was the "#1 fan" of this blog and I suspect probably my "only" reader (lol). She got such a "kick" out of all the stuff I would get for so little and free! When I didn't "post" anything she would email me to find out why. Every week she would tell me how much she enjoyed reading this blog. I just have not had it in me to post since her passing.
I wrote a post in December regarding our celebrating her 90th birthday (it was 12/10). We had a wonderful Christmas with her too!
She was an inspiration to the females in our family. She lived alone in her own home, cooked for herself, did housework, and even yard work. She played cards with her "lady friends" weekly and volunteered at the local museum and library in her town. She loved to embroider, crochet, and knit. Every year she made mittens and donated them to the schools for the children who had none.

She is very much missed!

Dave's Finds

I have not shown any of Dave's finds from work (junkyard). But he has found some great Wilton pans. Most appear to be new (well unused) with price tags still on them.

I wish I had time to get them up on ebay, but I am so behind. The Christmas tree is not up, the shopping is not comepleted and I need to start the baking too! I can't believe I made time to get this blog out but my fans have been wondering if I quit it. No I am just busier than usual these days. But I promise to "try" and get it out more often - so keep checking back!

Have a "good evening"

It's been awhile....

2010-11-19T15:25:00.000-08:00

WOW! I didn't realize I had been away so long!
I have had many, many "Target deals" in the past month that I will share (not all at once though LOL)
First - I was in a car accident in October which put a crimp in my life and set me back on getting things done around here. I am fine! My truck is in the repair shop as I write this. It will be "good as new" in a few days. Until then I have a rental car that is hmm "different" is the word. As my sister put it when she also had one like it as a rental this past summer - "it is like riding in a coffin" LOL. It's a Chevy HHR.
Okay enough of that.
I am so proud of myself! I have been coming to terms with "letting go of stuff". I am not as bad as some of the "hoarders" I have seen on television. I do have the problem but not nearly as bad (yet). This past summer and fall I have seen first hand how this can be a problem". So my first move was - after we had the yard sale, everything that did not sell I put on the curb. I then went on craigslist and put out an ad, that it was all out there. Within an hour every bit of it was gone! If I would have waited to haul to the thrift store I fear I may have lapsed.
Next I have been gradually taking things out of the basement and "giving them away" on freecycle. So far I have given away several boxes of clothing and much misc, that was just gathering dust waiting for that "someday that I might need it".
So here are some pictures of the items I have gotten "free" this past month.

YEP all free and yes there is more free and nearly free stuff .

Hungry Man Dinners $2.79 I paid 79¢ each
Velveeta Shells & Cheese reg $1.79 I paid 75¢
Land O Lakes Butter reg $1.89 each I paid 24¢ each

Meow Mix I paid 1¢ each
Bic Razors reg $2.99 I paid 49¢
Right Guard 2 pks reg $4.00 each I paid 48¢ for each 2pk

Junkyard Finds

Dave had a "find" this week! Yep another Wilton pan! Just needed a good wash!

I started aggressively attacking the clutter in the basement and around the house. We are hopefully having a yard sale in the next 2 weeks. Whatever is left over will be donated. I need to make room in the basement. We are planning to put a water closet (toilet & sink) in. We also are replacing the drain pipe under the floor to the main line. Yes a major project for the winter.

As for my hip problems - there are good days and bad days! The medicine is no "wonder drug" that is for sure!

Have a good evening!

I'm back!

2010-09-12T16:53:00.000-07:00

I went to the doctor last week. I have been waking in the night with unbearable pain in my hips and thighs for about a month. I assumed I had "restless leg syndrome" since the commercials described it the same. LOL.
No I do not have it. However it is worse. I will have to have both hips replaced! Of course we will be trying all the latest treatments to put this off as long as we can as I am so "young" (at least when it comes to hip replacement). I had my first full nights sleep last Sunday. It has been at least 3 months (maybe more) that I have slept through the night.
The new medication is not a pain pill as I have been taking Darvocet and was still in pain. It is what is called an NSAID. I am hoping it continues to work.
Though I am sleeping through the night I am still in a lot of pain. I took some time away from my computor because even sitting is painful. It's probably the chair. I am trying to figure a laptop into our finances. I can then sit in my recliner which I have less pain using. I don't have a fairy godmother to buy me one so I will continue here until the pain is too much.
Anyway - last week I did not shop. Today I did go out for the "weekly needs" and sale items. I did get some good deals. Also one day this week I stopped at Walgreens and got some deals too.

This was Walgreens: Cookies reg $1.99 each on sale 99¢ each less coupons 49¢ each

Thanks for stopping in. Have a good evening.

We moved the "curb find"!

2010-08-21T17:55:00.000-07:00

I am exhausted!
Having my cabinet from "the curb" in the dining room was just annoying me! It just did not "fit in" there.
So today we measured and I decided I would like to see how it would look in the kitchen. I was worried that it would be too "foreboding", (this is where Dave said "too what?"). LOL! First we put it on one side of the refrigerator. Dave said "I think it would be better on the other side". I said "I guess we can try it".
You need to understand that at both places the refrigerator had to be moved and it has a water line hooked to the back of it (umm yea!).
He moved it too the other side and it just didn't "feel" right to me and was very "foreboding". LOL! So my wonderful man ( I helped as best I could) moved the refrigerator , again, and moved the cabinet back to the first spot. After some minor adjustments I found the "right spot" and it also looks great!
( If you are noticing that the cabinet looks different than yesterdays picture, that would be because Dave discovered when we were moving it > that it was upside down! LOL! What a hoot!! LOL.

Now my cookbooks are protected from dust and my appliances are easier for me to get to. It also matches my cabinets ( at least until they get their makeovers).

I am exhausted because, after we pulled out the old bookshelf, another cabinet and the refrigerator I said "oh yuck".

You see we have 3 cats and a dog. Other pet owners probably at this moment are shaking their heads because "they know"! DUST BUNNIES FROM HELL!

So it was time for a good sweeping and mopping. At this point I also discovered the walls could use a washing. So I climbed up there with my rag and bucket and set to work!

That was the only side of the kitchen I got to today. Tomorrow, if I can get out of bed, lol, I will hopefully get the other side done.

Have a good evening!

Another Curb Find!

2010-08-20T14:57:00.000-07:00

If you read my Monday blog you know about the cool handmade bookshelf I found on the curb. Well the next day as we were driving by this same "curb" (lol) I found this:

Also handmade and OMG is it heavy!! They used quality wood. LOL and it too smelled like Pledge (but was not slippery). Although it is quite nice looking it does not fit my decor, so I believe I may be painting it.
I have to put it in the dining room and that is where my dilema is. I want it to store my appliances in, but if I put it in the kitchen it will just be too crowded. I don't really want my guests seeing all my appliances through the glass doors - in the dining room! I have thought of maybe putting a lace curtain on the inside of the doors.

Any thoughts or comments?

I am blog hopping today. I've read a lot of cool new blogs. Just click a button and you can too!

Monday Monday

2010-08-16T18:54:00.000-07:00

Today is the last day of the summer vacation for my son. He will start high school tomorrow. Time does fly by! I took a vacation day and we spent it doing some last minute shopping and had lunch at our favorite place Hu Hot Mongolian Grill.

I received a coupon the other day from Kohl's for 30% off my entire order, so we headed there to check the clearance racks.

I found this top for myself reg price $38.00 >I paid $5.32

My son found these Reebok shoes reg price $59.99 > I paid $24.49

Total worth $ 97.99 > I paid $29.81

We stopped in at Wal- mart for a few things and I got 2 cans of cat food for free!

Total value $1.34

We then stopped by Dollar General. I do not normally shop here but I am on a mission to find a black ruffled shower curtain, I was hoping they would have one - but no such luck.

I did get these deals though

This 56oz Dawn reg price $3.50 on sale for $2.75 > I had a $1.00 coupon making it $1.75!

The Scrubbing Bubbles reg price $3.25 each on sale for $2.50 each > I had a coupon for $2.00 off 2 making them $1.50 each!

Total value $10.00 > I paid $4.75!!

Curbside Find
We were driving down the street and found this on the curb!!

Very solid and sturdy ( I think it was handmade) and it was a bit slippery (it smelled like Pledge).

I just happen to need a bookcase! LOL!

I have found a black ruffled shower curtain on Amazon.com!

I have cashed in some of my "swagbucks" for two $5.00 gift certificates. As soon as they load to my account I will be ordering the shower curtain. Yahoo!!

$10.00 free just for using the "swagbucks" search engine.

Thanks for stopping. Have a good evening!

Sunday Deals

2010-08-15T19:01:00.000-07:00

I am still only buying the sale items and weekly needs, since I am trying to dwindle our "stockpile" before it gets too old.
So today was minimal at the grocery store but still BIG savings.

Folgers reg price $8.98 each > I paid $4.98 each

Skippy reg price $1.98 each > I paid 98¢ each

Farmland sausage reg price$1.78 each > I paid $1.00 each

Total worth $29.04 > I paid $15.92

We did a Target run this evening (it is only 1 mile from our house).

Pillows reg price $4.99 each > I paid $2.00 each

Bagel Bites I paid 24¢

Bic pens 2 packs - free

Tide 2 packs they paid me 3¢ each.

Total worth $16.14 > I paid $4.24

These Tide singles I have been accumulating and putting away for our next vacation. They are great! They are flat and can slip into your baggage and take up no room like a bulky bottle will. We did a lot of laundry last year when we went to ocean, that sand gets into everything. Next year I will be prepared with my "freebies"!

From the Garden
Yesterday I noticed this yellow finch on my Zinnia's. I had to take the picture from the bathroom window through the screen. It wasn't too clear.

I went into the living room to try and get another picture with the zoom on my camera through our picture window (that has no screen). I looked out and to my dismay it was gone and as I started to put the camera down I realized it was right in front of me!

It was like it came up and posed and then left.

Because of the tint on the window the picture is dim.

That's it for today.

Good Evening!

Sunday deals and recipe

I made a trip to the store today to pick up the "sale items" and the weekly regulars (milk, fresh veg's,etc).

Total worth $55.58 > I paid $26.14

I had a few other items in the cart too.

My coupon total was $9.25

Today I made granola and granola bars. They are awesome!

A big "Thank you" to Megan at Daily Essentials and Deals (she has great step by step pictures).

Recipe

Mix in a bowl:

4 cups quick rolled oats

1 cup wheat germ

1/3 cup flax seed (ground)

1/2 - 3/4 cup brown sugar

1 1/2 tsp salt

1-2 cups mini chocolate chips (opt.)

other options (I did not use these)

1 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 cup raw sunflower seeds

1/2 cup chopped pecans

1/2 cup almonds

In another bowl mix:

1/3 cup canola oil

1/4 cup honey

1 tsp. vanilla

1/2 cup water

Then put wet ingredients into the dry and mix well.

Preheat oven to 300* and spray pans with cooking spray.

For this batch I spread 1/2 onto a cookie sheet loosely for cereal

and pressed the other 1/2 of the batch into a 8 1/2 x 11 baking dish (press firmly to make granola bars).

Bake the loose batch until lightly brown on the bottom about 25 minutes. Lightly stir one time halfway through baking.

For the bars in the baking dish leave in a little longer about 35 minutes. Until lightly brown around edges.

Once the bars cool, just cut and store sealed!

Ovens vary so you will want to keep an eye on them to make sure they are not overcooked.

Next time I believe I will add some pecans. This is so yummy I can't wait til breakfast!

Gasp! We picked more tomatoes today (2 plants are now officially dead though). I have enough to put up 3 more quarts of Spaghetti Sauce which I will do after work tomorrow ( at least that is the plan, lol). I am feeling better that my garden has not been a total bust!
I did find that I have 1 pumpkin growing ( out of 12 plants) and 1 acorn squash (out of 6 plants). Ho-hum! LOL. I don't foresee me canning lots of pumpkin this fall as I had hoped.

Back to work tomorrow - Ugh! I actually have to work the whole week. I was enjoying having a day off a week (sometimes 2). (I have next Monday off though he-he ,) School starts Tuesday Aug. 17.

I timed this just right to finish up before my show -
"The Gates" is about to come on. LOL.
Good Evening!

The Truth Is......

2010-08-07T21:06:00.000-07:00

I have found that their are some misconceptions about frugal/thrifty people. Or at least there are about me and why I am frugal and thrifty.
First let me say that we are far from wealthy nor are we poor or struggling to get by (although I will say "been there done that").
I drive a 2010 vehicle, we own a "Harley", we have a modest but nice home. I have all of this "because" I don't spend frivolously, rarely pay full price, use coupons, shop at yard sales and thrift stores.
Used is not always a bad thing and who will know unless you tell . When I do buy new - I buy "quality".
I call myself "cheap" because I am unwilling to "spend" my hard earned money on full price (which is always too much).
As I say we do not "struggle to make ends meet". We pay cash for everything. Sometimes that means we have to "save up" before we buy.
I do not flaunt or brag about what I have. I am not jealous of what others have or obtain. I keep to myself and I guess that leads others to believe I am jealous and "poor".
I do like to brag - about saving money! That is why I have this blog and to share with others how they can too with a bit of perseverance, self control and frugality.
I would love to have comments from others on the subject and how they have been perceived by others for their frugal - thrifty ways.
Have a good evening!

Tax Free Friday!

2010-08-06T17:35:00.000-07:00

Today and tomorrow my state does not charge taxes on clothing. My son and I got up early to hit some stores. We left about 8:00 a.m. only to find that most the stores we wanted to shop at were not open until 9:00 a.m.
We never waited in any lines and parking was even close. We were actually surprised that there was no "mad rush" at any of the stores. I expect that will happen this evening when people have their checks and are off work. Tomorrow will probably be the worst.

First stop - Kohl's! Before leaving the house I checked my e-mail and "sure enough" there was one from Kohl's with a coupon for 15% off my entire purchase!

Tek Gear athletic shorts (orig price $20.00)> $8.00

Atari shorts (orig $14.00) >$2.80

Apt 9 shirt (orig. $24.00)> $4.80

Black shirt (orig $10.00) > $3.00

and Tony Hawk shirt red (orig 30.00) > $17.99

Total value $98.00 > I paid $31.10 (my coupon was worth $5.49 and no sales tax which would have been $2.18)

All were on the clearance racks except the Tony Hawk shirt - it was "on sale".

On to "gordmans". Here is where we bought the most stuff and saved the most.

Black athletic shorts (orig $20.00) > $7.00

Mecca Black shorts w/belt (orig $40.00) >$16.00

Mecca Denim shorts w/belt (orig) 40.00 > $14.00

Mecca jeans (orig $44.00) >$18.00

purple shirt (orig $28.00) >$11.00

green shirt (orig 24.00) > $12.00

Tap out shirt (orig $24.00) > $7.00

All were on the clearance racks!

Total worth $244.00 > I paid $92.00 and no sales tax which would have been $6.44

They also gave me a card for 15% off any single item AND a $10.00 gift card!

That was it for clearance racks but we hit some great sales.

At K-mart we bought:

a pack of Hanes t-shirts (reg $9.99) > $8.50

Rte 66 denim shorts (reg $22.99) > $11.49

Total worth $32.98 > I paid $19.99 no sales tax which would have been $1.40

To Shopko:

Airwalk shoes (reg $25.99) > $19.99 no sales tax which would have been $1.40

Target :

Hanes socks (reg $7.98) $5.00 but I paid $4.00 since I printed off the coupon from their website!

no sales tax which would have been a whopping 28¢! LOL

Hot Topic:

Buy one shirt get 2nd 1/2 off

Total worth $$35.00 > I paid $27.50

no sales tax which would have been $1.93

The total sales tax I saved today was $13.63

It may not seem like much but I'd say it paid for my gas and part of our lunch.

New Design

Yes I have changed the design again. I have just not been able to find something that fits me, other than the black. I think the black made it to hard for people to read so I changed to this. Let me know your thoughts.

It's Blog Hop Friday

I am checking out some new blogs today. It's fun to find new blogs. Try it just - click on a button.

I'm going to read some new blogs now. Have a good evening!

It's Already August!

2010-08-01T18:34:00.000-07:00

It's already August and what a disappointing Fall it will be with so little from my garden this year. I know I am not alone though, as others in the area have said the same of their gardens.

I managed to get a little less than 3 quarts of spaghetti sauce canned from the few tomatoes we got. I even have a couple tomatoes for our BLT's too.

Mailbox finds

It's been awhile since we had many "free samples" come to the mailbox. This week we started getting some again.

My son has become somewhat disinterested in this mailbox freebies though. LOL. It seems all I get anymore is feminine product samples. I got a diaper , Lanacane, Olay body wash, and some water flavorers too.

The plumbing is done. Actually it was done on Tuesday night. It is so great to have water pressure. They also ran plumbing for the new bathroom we are putting in the basement. We will start on that next year.

The weather has still been nasty humid. I would love to get back to working on the landscaping in the front. I have decided to go ahead and do the landscaping blocks after all. It just makes for a nicer look.

The mower broke again (after my last report of it breaking and Dave fixing it).

We had to end up borrowing a mower today. The lawn has not been mowed in 2 weeks and though it hasn't grown all that much it was starting to look unsightly.

Flipping It For $$

Bought at thrift store for 98¢ sold on ebay for $6.00

Brand New never used - got it off freecycle (for free ) sold on craigslist for $5.00

paid 20¢ for unopened vintage kit at thrift store sold on ebay for $8.47

It's back to work tomorrow so I will say Good Evening!

Saturday finds

2010-07-31T20:34:00.000-07:00

I was in the area of Target today, so I used up my coupons that were expiring- today! LOL.
Not a whole lot but still better than paying full price.

I paid 24¢ (reg $2.24) for the Bagel Bites, Busy Bones $1.09 (reg $2.84), Beggin Strips $1.09 (reg $2.34), Tide (reg 97¢) They paid me 3¢ each (LOL).

Total value $10.33 > I paid $2.33

All thanks to coupons!!

I was in the area of Fareway also so I stopped for their sale stuff.

Van Camps were 4 for $1.00 with an in-store coupon, (reg 68¢ each) Wheat bread $1.09 each (reg 2.29 each) Ball lids $2.19 each (reg $2.89 each) my coupon was buy 2 get one free so I actually paid $1.46 each, Era 32 load (not shown) (reg 3.99) on sale $2.99 I paid $1.99.

Total value $22.25 > I paid $10.64

I have quite a grocery list started for tomorrow. I am hoping I have enough tomatoes to at least put up 3 quarts of spaghetti sauce. We have been able to get a small bucket of them and I see there are maybe half dozen more out there (if they are any good). This years garden has not gone well due to ALL the rain. My squash and pumpkins are not producing fruit. I am going to attempt to pollenate them myself tomorrow. The Roma tomatoes are almost dead. I have had only 1 pepper out of 3 plants. Not many jalapeno peppers either like usual. Green beans I have harvested twice from (not many) and they are about done. The pole beans have not produced hardly anything. Cucumbers are doing fair but seem to be stunted. carrots have nice tops but nothing below.

We not only had an over abundance of rain we have had a problem with moles in the garden this year too. They did not bother it last year. They have also killed off some of the plants the shade garden I started.

I have never had a garden go so wrong on me before.

Anyway, I am going to try some new recipes for making my own Ranch dressing and Italian dressing.

If I think they are good I will share them.

It's late so I will say Good Evening!

Friday Blog Hopping

I have been blog hopping again! I have found some great new blogs to read and follow. I hope you also find some that you enjoy to.

Sunday

2010-07-25T18:51:00.000-07:00

Can you spot the little fawn? I barely saw it when we went for a ride to check the river. So cute!

Yes, I missed Saturday again. Ho-hum. LOL
It was a "not so good day" and progressed that way all day.
First the lawnmower broke. I reached down and grabbed the pull thingie, gave a yank. Then there I stood a piece of rope with a plastic handle dangling from my hand. Thankfully I have Dave, who can fix just about anything.
With the heat and humidity the swimming pool was starting to turn green. Ugh! The pump had gone out. I checked around and the cheapest pump in town started at a mere $300.00, I didn't pay that much for the pool! This was the second pump we have been through. The one that came with the pool expired on us last year. Luckily someone Dave knows, gave us theirs since their pool leaked. (At this time we have no friends willing to part with their pump). So I got on the great "find anything website" aka - Craigslist! Voila! There was one right here in my town for $50.00!
The guy told us he bought it new for $129.00 used it a month and a half. He moved and got rid of the pool.
We went over last night and he plugged it in and he even said "if it doesn't work", bring it back I will give your money back. WOW you don't hear that often. Very doubtful he was scamming since we know where he lives.LOL.
It is a really nice pump and better than the others we had, but, we found that the hoses were bigger and would not fit onto the ports on our pool! NOOOOOOOO!
Again I am so lucky that I have Dave who can "figure something out"!
The pump is all hooked up now and pumping out all the algae!!! YAY! Dave is my hero!!
The guy said while we were there, "do you have a use for this area rug"? He said "its not that old and we don't want it". I checked it out and it is definitly "not very old"! My son was overjoyed when I stuck it in the truck and he asked what "the heck is that". (WOW sometimes it's the oddest things that can make them happy LOL).
He has been working on the rec room in the basement. The tile floor is old, ugly and chipping away. Now he can cover it and that is what he did as soon as we got home.
Dave's "plumber acquaintance" was just here. They will be doing the plumbing Tuesday. Yahoo!! I won't know what to do with "water pressure" LOL. We are getting a discount, because > Dave is going to help him. Further we will be paying very little for the copper pipes and fittings. Most of it is coming from Dave's work. (No, it is not used). As I have said before - you would not believe the stuff that comes into the scrap yard.
Dave's boss told him he could set aside any new stuff that comes in that we can use for the plumbing job. We will just be buying anything more we need at Menards. This will be very helpful because copper is not cheap.
We are not having the drainage done, just the water pipes. The plumber is going to give us an estimate though on replacing a drain pipe under the floor and adding a spot for a toilet. Then I will have my second bathroom! We will be doing most of the work for that ourselves, with him coming in for the "official stuff".
When I found this house 3 years ago it had everything on my list that I wanted, except one>a second bathroom!
You rarely find everything on your list of must haves. I fell in love with this place when I walked in the door. So when it came down to my list and it was just the one thing - I accepted it, because, Dave "knows people" and plumbing. The reason we are having a plumber in though is, although Dave knows plumbing, he is 1) not licensed and we have city laws on that, 2) he is not a professional and therefore it takes alot longer (like days). I cannot be without water for very long. The plumber said it would be done in about 5 hours. $30.00 an hour. WooHoo I can handle that!

Deals of the day!

Hyvee was having a coupon sale, I got the Brownie Mix for 49¢ (reg $1.58), mac & cheese 17¢ each (reg 58¢ each), brown sugar 99¢ (reg $1.89), Sara Lee Bread 99¢ (reg $2.28) the Kool-aid was on sale for 10-77¢ (reg 8 - $1.00) I had a coupon for $2.00 off C&H sugar when you by 10 Kool-aid so I paid 88¢ for the sugar!

Value $12.25> I paid $4.80

The river is up and they said it would crest today. This is where you used to "back down to the river" and drop your boat. This was last night so I expect this area where we were parked is now under water.

This is the Missouri River.

Moneymakers

Bee costume for child, bought at a yard sale for $1.00. Sold on Craigslist for $10.00

Vintage canister set still in the original packaging, bought at thrift store $1.00 sold on Craigslist $5.00

Trying Blog Hopping

Vacation Wednesday's

2010-07-21T16:53:00.000-07:00

I started taking Wednesday off last week, to spend time with my son. He is so bored all day being on summer break.
We are not taking a vacation this year because of the turbulent weather everywhere. We hope to get back to Tybee Island next year though (and I am going to try hard to save the money to rent a condo this time on the beach).
Last Wednesday we went to Joslyn Museum in Omaha, Ne. (accross the river from us). Joslyn Museum We love museums and they have some very beautiful paintings and exhibits there. An FYI on Saturdays you can visit for free!
We also visited the oldest cemetary in our town here. I had not been there since I was a teenager. It was absolutely awesome. (My son and I love old cemetaries).

Today we went to the "Bodies The Exhibition". Very expensive but very interesting. For those not familar with this they are preserved human bodies opened up so you can see what is inside of us. Here is a link Bodies The Exhibition. My son held a human brain in his hands and said he couldn't wait to tell his dad. LOL!
That didn't take as long to see as we thought so I decided to take him up to the oldest part of the city which before being annexed was Florence. Here we found an old Mill that was established by Brighom Young and is now a museum. It was free but they take donations (yes I donated). In the upper part is an Art Gallery. It was a very interesting place and the woman was delightful to chat with. They have a Farmers Market type thing on Sunday's she said so we are planning on returning then. There is also another museum in the area that is only open on weekends. We plan to stop at that. Florence Mill
We also discovered the Mormon Trails Center Museum. It was totally free and very interesting. I had no idea about their history. I love history and they very kindly gave me a Book of Mormon, which I do plan on reading. I declined the missionary visit though. Mormon Trails Museum
Finally, I took my son to Hummel Park. I had not been there in over 20 years. Check out this link Hummel Park. I had only been there at night also. It was almost as creepy in the daytime I found, but, we love creepy. LOL! We will be going back with our camera's soon to take pictures of the "morphing stairs" (LOL) and the beautiful views.
So if you are ever in Omaha, Ne. These are just a few of the inexpesive historical places to visit.

From The Garden
Picked another mess of green beans. A friend at work gave me the best resipe for them. They are in the crock pot as we speak! Smell so yummy!
Recipe
Put raw bacon (cut in 1 in pieces) on the bottom of the crock pot (as much as you want)
Next put in potatoes (about 1in cubes) as much as you want but leave room for the beans)
Then snap your beans and put them on top.
I add about a 1/2 cup of water
Put lid on and cook until potatoes are done. I stir them about the last 1-2 hours
If you put them on in morning I suggest on low if you start them after noon as I did put them on high and turn down when potatoes are done.

I made this with the first mess of green beans and it "was to die for". Dave couldn't get enough and went on and on about it.

Sunday Again

2010-07-18T18:46:00.000-07:00

I wanted to blog more often but it has been less. I just can not find time to do everything I want to do in a day.
From The Garden
The garden is starting to produce a bit more. I was able to get these few tomatoes and I don't expect to get many more. The rain just keeps coming and the ground is not drying up. I had to throw out some cucmbers that were laying in water and had grown fungus all over them.

The flowers are all doing well too. Those clearance flowers I bought for $1.00 each

Just look at them now!

They just needed some attention.

My favorite flowers are Lilies and more of mine are in bloom and they just smell so good!

We had another storm last week with winds of 80 miles per hour. Luckily we had no damage at our place.

This was taken as it was coming in . The northern part of my city got it worse than we did. Looks like we caught the edge of it.

Trash to Treasure

Dave brought me this old cast iron kettle, the bottom is missing and the top piece (cover) I took off.

It's really old and there is just something about it I like. I found a clay pot fit perfectly in it.

Notice something different in these two pictures? The wiring is hooked up to the outlet. Now I can put in my pond! YAY!! Dave got the outlet finished today. So expect pictures soon ( I hope) -(yet another project). I have all the stuff for the pond I was just needing an outlet .

Savings

I didn't take any pictures but my son and I hit the clearance rack at Kohl's this week and he found a pair of APT Jeans for $6.00 (orig price $60.00) and a pair of shorts for $2.80 (orig price $14.00) plus I had a coupon for 20% off entire purchase so I paid $7.53 for all!

No great grocery shopping deals to speak of. Only bought a few things this week. I am trying to use up all we have in freezer and pantry before it goes old.

Have a good evening!

WOW It's already Sunday!

2010-07-11T16:48:00.000-07:00

I have been dealing with hip pain (in both sides) these past 3 days. Needless to say I have not gotten as much done as I would have liked to, and here it is Sunday- back to work tomorrow. Ho-hum!

Friday I worked on the bathroom some more. Dave put up my shelf last Sunday so I could put my plant back in there.
I suppose I should explain the unusual planter. First, I want to say that I love it because it is unique and one of a kind. It means a lot to me. You see my son made it for me in "art class" at school last year. He admits he is not good at "ceramics", LOL (I don't care). I find it special an am proud to display it.

The Bathroom Project
I finished the cupboard by putting new knobs on. Here are a couple of "before" pictures.

There were cupboards around the "ugly" light fixture. We removed the upper and left side cupboards. I painted the one that I we kept.

I painted it to look like "old wood" but now I am thinking about going back over it and making it completely dark.

Now I am trying to decide if I want to paint the new sink base "black". It has a "plastic like" finish on the front doors for ease of cleaning and I just am not sure I can get that if I paint them.

I wish I had taken a "before" picture of the old sink that was here when we moved in. It was one of those 60's fake marbelized ones. It had a tiny bowl and long 3 foot counter to the right. It was "nasty" (uncleanable), too.

The other thing I am about to tackle is the tub. ( Okay here if you could see me is where I am rolling my eyes, LOL). First - why on earth did they paint it?!! Not only did they paint it but they did a horrid job.

It has run marks!
This is the bottom of the tub (yes inside- we only use the shower at this time and a bath mat)

The tub is porcelain so I can't scrape it off and have to be careful of any chemicals I use. I think however the paint is chipping itself off quite well .

This is not the only problem we have had while redoing the bathroom. At some point in time someone painted all the walls, ceiling and tile (we removed the tile) with varnish or polyurethane which, through the years yellowed, cracked and chipped and apparently when it got steamy in there, it ran down the walls. I scrubbed and scrubbed before painting just so my paint would adhere.

So the bathroom is still not completely done.

Deals
I had only 2 great deals to share today.

The tuna I got for 47¢ a can (reg 98¢ each) and the "always" I got for $1.69 (reg $6.98).

The Garden

It was raining today when I got up and it is supposed to rain more tonight. My tomatoes are not doing well at all, due to this. I am pretty sure I will not have enough to can.

I have already harvested several jalapeno's which is unusual since the plant is not even half the size as last years. I still have alot left in the jar, so I have started a jar for my son. Last year the big jar was full to the top, from just the one plant. I gave alot away too, off that plant.

The cucumbers, pumpkins, squash and beans are all doing wonderful.

My lilies finally bloomed!!

That $1.00 clearance pot I bought at Menards just needed some water and sunshine. (The other one is all budded)

Here is a clearer picture of the front bed (as promised).

I see I have green beans to pick and the sun is starting to go down so I better go pick them.
Thanks for stopping.
Have a - "good evening"
