Day Dream Achiever

Love this Note from the Universe

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Tue, 24 Jul 2012 22:41:00 -0400

If, Jolene, when you lay your head upon your pillow tonight, you could choose to slip into a dream dimension where time would literally expand, so much so that you could live out an entire other lifetime within it as a person "designed" by you from head to toe, even choosing your name and who your parents would be. Where every single day you'd be pushed on to greatness, every single challenge would invite you to become more, and all of your dreams could come true. Where, no matter how things may ever seem, you'd be bathed in love, surrounded by friends, safe and sound in your very own bed. And where, upon waking, all that you loved and learned in that lifetime would remain with you, and all that scared and threatened you would only have prepared you for even more love and learning in the near future.

Would you choose to go there, Jolene, just for one night, on the condition that during the dream itself you mustn't have any recollection of how you got there, its purpose, or what might happen next?

Of course you would, you're a supercoolhappylovething!

Which begs the question, "How do you know, then, this isn't that dream?"

Howling at the moon,
The Universe

Either way, you did choose to be called Jolene, Jolene. Did, did.

Hiroshima 66 years later

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Wed, 11 Jul 2012 23:57:00 -0400

STATEMENT AT THE END SAYS IT ALL!!

What happened to the radiation that they say lasts for thousands of years?

HIROSHIMA 1945

We all know that Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed in August 1945 - after the explosion of atomic bombs.
However, we know little about the progress made by the people of that land during the past 65 years.

HIROSHIMA - 65 YEARS LATER

DETROIT- 65 YEARS AFTER HIROSHIMA

What has caused more long term destruction - The A-bomb or Government welfare programs created to buy the Votes of those who want someone to take care of them?
Japan does not have a welfare system. Work for it or do without.

And I don’t think there has ever been a better explanation of the importance of incentive than this example:

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class.

That class had insisted that socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on socialism".. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A....(substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B.

The students who studied 'hard' were upset and the students who studied 'little' were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less' and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied 'little'.

The second test average was a 'D'. No one was happy. When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F. As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that "socialism" would also ultimately 'fail' because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.

It could not be any simpler than that. Remember, there IS a test coming up. Elections sometime soon - Perhaps the sooner the better. This is your chance to have YOUR say.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Can you think of a reason for not sharing this?

Neither could I.

And the South is quiet .....

If you lose hope, somehow you lose the vitality that keeps life moving, you lose that courage to be, that quality that helps you go on in spite of it all. And so today I still have a dream. ~ Martin Luther King, Jr.

Be The Best of Whatever You Are
by Douglas Malloch

If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill
Be a scrub in the valley--but be
The best little scrub by the side of the hill;
Be a bush if you can't be a tree.

If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway some happier make;
If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass--
But the liveliest bass in the lake!

We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew,
There's something for all of us here.
There's big work to do and there's lesser to do,
And the task we must do is the near.

If you can't be a highway then just be a trail,
If you can't be the sun be a star;
It isn't by size that you win or you fail--
Be the best of whatever you are!

Radical Forgiveness

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Tue, 1 May 2012 16:07:00 -0400

One day a while back, a man, his heart heavy with grief, was walking in the woods. As he thought about his life this day, he knew many things were not right. He thought about those who had lied about him back when he had a job.

His thoughts turned to those who had stolen his things and cheated him. He remembered family that had passed on. His mind turned to the illness he had, that no one could cure. His very soul was filled with anger, resentment, and frustration.

Standing there this day, searching for answers he could not find, knowing all else had failed him, he knelt at the base of an old oak tree to seek the one he knew would always be there. And with tears in his eyes, he prayed:

'Lord- You have done wonderful things for me in this life. You have told me to do many things for you, and I happily obeyed. Today, you have told me to forgive. I am sad, Lord, because I cannot, I don't know how. It is not fair Lord, I didn't deserve these wrongs that were done against me and I shouldn't have to forgive. As perfect as your way is Lord, this one thing I cannot do, for I don't know how to forgive. My anger is so deep Lord, I fear I may not hear you, but I pray you teach me to do the one thing I cannot do: Teach me to forgive.’

As he knelt there in the quiet shade of that old oak tree, he felt something fall onto his shoulder. He opened his eyes. Out of the corner of one eye, he saw something red on his shirt. He could not turn to see what it was because where the oak tree had been was a large square piece of wood in the ground. He raised his head and saw two feet held to the wood with a large spike through them.

He raised his head more, and tears came to his eyes as he saw Jesus hanging on a cross. He saw spikes in His hands, a gash in His side, a torn and battered body, deep thorns sunk into His head. Finally he saw the suffering and pain on His precious face. As their eyes met, the man's tears turned to sobbing, and Jesus began to speak.

'Have you ever told a lie?' He asked?

The man answered - 'Yes, Lord.'

'Have you ever been given too much change and kept it?'

The man answered - 'Yes. Lord.' And the man sobbed more and more.

'Have you ever taken something from work that wasn't yours?' Jesus asked?

And the man answered, 'Yes, Lord.'

'Have you ever sworn, using my Father's name in vain?'

The man, crying now, answered - 'Yes, Lord.'

As Jesus asked many more times, 'Have you ever'? The man's crying became uncontrollable, for he could only answer - 'Yes, Lord'.

Then Jesus turned His head from one side to the other, and the man felt something fall on his other shoulder He looked and saw that it was the blood of Jesus. When he looked back up, his eyes met those of Jesus, and there was a look of love the man had never seen or known before.

Jesus said, 'I didn't deserve this either, but I forgive you.'

It may be hard to see how you're going to get through something, but when you look back in life, you realize how true this statement is.

Read the following first line slowly and let it s ink in.

If God brings you to it - He will bring you through it.

Life Is a Gift

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Thu, 26 Apr 2012 17:41:00 -0400

Today before you say an unkind word -
Think of someone who can't speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food –

Think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Before you complain about your husband or wife –

Think of someone who's crying out to the UNIVERSE for a companion.

Today before you complain about life -
Think of someone who went too early to heaven.

Before you complain about your children -
Think of someone who desires children but they're barren.

Before you argue about your dirty house someone didn't clean or sweep -
Think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before whining about the distance you drive -
Think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job -
Think of the unemployed, the disabled, and those who wish they had your job.

But before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another -
Remember that not one of us is without sin and we all answer to A HIGHER POWER

Four Worms and Lesson to be Learned

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Mon, 9 Jan 2012 21:34:00 -0500

A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon.

Four worms were placed into four separate jars....
The first worm was put into a container of alcohol.
The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke.
The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup.
The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil.
At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following:

The first worm in alcohol – Dead!

The second worm in cigarette smoke – Dead!

The Third worm in chocolate syrup –Dead!

Fourth worm in good clean soil -Alive.

So the Minister asked the congregation What did you learn from this demonstration?

Maxine was sitting in the back, quickly raised her hand and said,

'As long as you drink, smoke and eat chocolate, you won't have worms!'

That pretty much ended the service

Gotta LOVE Maxine!!!

Summary of Life

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Sat, 16 Apr 2011 01:29:00 -0400

GREAT TRUTHS THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED:

No matter how hard you try, you can't baptize cats.
When your Mom is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair.
If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person.
Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.
You can't trust dogs to watch your food.
Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair.
Never hold a Dust-Buster and a cat at the same time.
You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.
Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts.

GREAT TRUTHS THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED:

Raising teenagers is like nailing jelly to a tree.
Wrinkles don't hurt.
Families are like fudge..mostly sweet, with a few nuts.
Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
Laughing is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside.
Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy.

THE FOUR STAGES OF LIFE:

You believe in Santa Claus.
You don't believe in Santa Claus.
You are Santa Claus.
You look like Santa Claus.

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD

Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get.
When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do while you're down there.
You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.
It's frustrating when you know all the answers but nobody bothers to ask you the questions.
Time may be a great healer, but it's a lousy beautician.
Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone.

SUCCESS:
At age 4 success is . . . not piddling in your pants.
At age 12 success is . . . having friends.
At age 17 success is . . . having a drivers license.
At age 35 success is . . . having money.
At age 50 success is . . . having money.
At age 70 success is . . . having a drivers license.
At age 75 success is . . . having friends.
At age 80 success is . . . not piddling in your pants.

“You must do the thing you think you cannot do” ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Imagine our world if everyone would follow the three R’s":

Respect for self
Respect for others
Responsibility for all your actions

Always remember to forget the troubles that pass your way;

BUT NEVER forget the blessings that come each day.

Powerful Video on How Your Thoughts Can Make You Sick, Broke and Unhappy

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Fri, 4 Feb 2011 12:28:00 -0500

Today I want to share with you a fascinating video with Bruce Lipton on how your thoughts can make you you sick, broke and unhappy, if you don't know how to control them properly...

Bruce Lipton is a cellular biologist who has spent years studying how our thoughts effect us in all areas of life.

His scientific studies are so shocking and revealing and have such wide ranging ramifications that the established communities have gone to great lengths to keep them hidden, especially the medical community.

Bruce Lipton has out-right said that the majority of medical studies done today are inaccurate and misleading and he has the proof to show why.

If you're ready for some mind blowing information on how your thoughts effect all areas of your life then I highly suggest watching this video:

Here are a few of the things that he discusses in the video:

-Why positive thinking is not enough to change your life (And what he says does work)

-How the unconscious programming you received in childhood is effecting you today (And what you can do about the programs that aren't serving you)

-The one simple belief that traditional medicine is based on that is 100% false.

This video is guaranteed to be one of the most eye opening videos you'll see all year.

Check it out

Enjoy,

Jolene West

P.S. - This video is part of the fr*ee Tapping World Summit Video series being released over the next few days leading up to this enormous event starting on Feb. 21st (Last year over 100,000 people attended this event online)

If you missed the first video with Jack Canfield on how your past traumas and negative emotions may be keeping you from attracting what you want in life you'll get access to that video as well when you see this one. Both are very powerful...

Jack Canfield’s Secret Technique (Free Video)

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Wed, 2 Feb 2011 12:43:00 -0500

I want to share an amazing video with you today that features Jack Canfield, co-creator of the “Chicken Soup for the Soul” books and featured expert in the hit film “The Secret”.

In the video Jack talks about his search for a
technology that could make the Law of Attraction work faster and better, and what he found…

His discovery completely changed his life and has completely changed how he helps people transform today.

If you believe in the Law of Attraction in principle but sometimes feel like it doesn’t work well for you in practice then you’re going to want to watch his video.

I guarantee you that this will be one of the most content rich videos you’ll ever watch.

I’m actually really curious to see what you think
because the information he talks about has pretty much been taking the world by storm over the last few months.

The technology that he discovered is also highly endorsed by other experts like Bob Proctor, Joe Vitale, Cheryl Richardson, Dr. Joseph Mercola, Bruce Lipton, Deepak Chopra and many others.

Remember, you can literally have ANYTHING you want in life….

If you’re life isn’t the way you want it to be or you simply want it to be better than you need to check this out.

Enjoy the video:

To your success and happiness,

Jolene West

P.S. – I especially like a line in the video where
Jack says “The only advise I would have for somebody thinking about trying this would be do it. There’s nothing to lose. It’s so fast. It’s such a powerfully quick process.”

The Seasons Of Life

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Fri, 7 Jan 2011 02:52:00 -0500

Saved this from an email I received back in March of 2007. Don’t know who the author is but it’s definitely a good read.

Life is about constant, predictable patterns of change. For The six thousand years of recorded history, as humans have entered this World, received parental instruction, classroom instruction, and gathered the experience of life; many have set for themselves ambitious goals, and dreamed lofty dreams. As the wheel of life continues its constant turning, all human emotions appear, disappear, and appear once again.

A major challenge faced by us all is that we must learn to experience the Changing of life's cycles without being changed by them; to make a constant and conscious effort to improve ourselves in the face of changing circumstances.

That is why I believe in the power and value of attitude. As I read, ponder and speculate about people, their deeds and their destiny, I become more deeply convinced that it is our natural destiny to grow, to succeed, to prosper, and to find happiness while we are here.

By our attitude, we decide to read, or not to read. By our attitude, we decide to try or give up. By our attitude, we blame ourselves for our failure, or we blame others. Our attitude determines whether we tell the truth or lie, act or procrastinate, advance or recede, and by our own attitude we and we alone actually decide whether to succeed or fail.

The Injustice of Sallie Mae

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Tue, 14 Dec 2010 17:43:00 -0500

Sallie Mae is the bully in the school yard who must be stopped. Let's take an honest look at Sallie Mae and see how they have cuckolded politicians into protecting them while pimping out unsuspecting students, both young and old.

Here is an excerpt from 'StudentLoanJustice.org': While credit card borrowers enjoy the fundamental consumer protections afforded all other borrowers with all other types of debt, federal student loan borrowers enjoy almost none of these protections. Not bankruptcy protections, not statutes of limitations, not truth in lending laws, not state usury laws...non-profit guarantors are even exempt from fair debt collection statutes. In additions, the lending system enjoys collection powers that know no equal. There is appeals process for defaults. About 20 cents of every dollar repaid by borrowers whose loans were defaulted are taken by these guarantors (or the federal government) before anything is applied to principal, interest, etc. Borrowers wages, Income tax returns, and even Social Security and disability income are routinely garnished without a court order, and regardless of any legitimate claims they may have about the propriety of the default. Borrower's ability to work in their field can be taken away through state professional license suspension, and other related state and federal policies regarding defaulted borrowers...In a very real sense, defaulted borrowers are given the choice of either finding a way to repay a vastly inflated debt, or face the rest of their lives as indentured, marginalized, second class citizens. See http://studentloanjustice.org/press_release8-6-10.html to read the full report.

Allow me to give an example a little closer to home. My son has 2 private student loans that he has been trying to consolidate for over a year now. This would lower the interest rate and he would have an affordable payment that he could payoff in his lifetime. The only bank that will even take on this type of student loan is Wells Fargo, and they keep insisting he have a co-signer. Unfortunately we are not in a position to be the co-signer. Because my son can not make the minimum payment right now, he keeps paying $150 per month to put them on forbearance. And now Sallie Mae won't even allow him to do that. The amount of these two loans put together is over $1300.00 a month, which only covers interest and not one Penney goes to principal.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit this (because there are people out there who will say we should have known better...yeah, if I knew then what I know now...), but here is how the 1st loan has ballooned out of site. It was taken out in the fall of 2003 for $28,123.00 at 11.250% interest. As of 11/11/10 that loan has now inflated up to $59,362.71. Three months prior it was at $58,269.57, an increased of over $1100.00. I won't even bring up the case of the 2nd loan, but believe me it's a similar sad story.

Sallie Mae will not stop the interest from accruing nor do they have to...because their loans are guaranteed by the government. If something were to happen to my son (heaven forbid), this burden of debt will still be paid by taxpayers (so Sallie Mae has no incentive to work with an individual). At least credit card companies will work with you, lowering the interest and sometimes taking it down to zero, when a consumer is struggling to make payments and avoid bankruptcy, but not Sallie Mae.

Don't think for a minute that we don't berate ourselves on a daily basis for not knowing the pitfalls of what might happen if our son didn't land a great paying position. To be totally honest we didn't even realize the 1st two tuition loans were private loans until my son went to consolidate them. I should state that he is paying the federal loans with an affordable interest rate but these 2 private loans are tearing our family apart. You can say all you want that we should have been more prepared to pay his tuition up front...and by all counts we wish we could have.

If we could have a do-over, we would never have encouraged our youngest son to go to school right out of High-School. Instead we would have encouraged him to get a job where an employer assists with getting a higher education. The fact of the matter is, this is all water under the bridge now. And we know we are not the only set of parents who are seeing their child crucified for their education decisions. This is why I hold fast on my statement that Sallie Mae is the bully in the school yard who must be stopped!

There is no incentive for tuition reform unless something can be done to protect the students who did not see the snowball of debt they were accumulating until it was too late. We are seeing a big push to get people to go back to school no matter what their age. Knowing what I know now, it's a criminal practice no different than the mortgage lending institutes who have suffered from collapse. Where is the bailout for individuals who may never see themselves able to handle a mortgage or live on their own?

If you really want to make your blood pressure skyrocket, check out /http://studentloanjustice.org

The stories from the victims are gut wrenching. Needless to say, my own son is feeling the vice-grip from Sallie Mae. He desperately wanted to serve his country and scored over 96% on the test, but he has come up against a wall due to his financial obligation to Sallie Mae. One can't work for the government when one owes the government. Wouldn't that be the easiest wage to garnish if it came to that?

Ironic, don't ya think?

The Obama Administrations Plan For You

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Mon, 12 Jul 2010 12:30:00 -0400

Wayne Allyn Root: OVERWHELM THE SYSTEM

Barrack Obama is no fool. He is not incompetent. To the contrary, he is brilliant. He knows exactly what he's doing. He is purposely overwhelming the U.S. economy to create systemic failure, economic crisis and social chaos -- thereby destroying capitalism and our country from within.

Barack Obama is my college classmate (Columbia University, class of '83). As Glenn Beck correctly predicted from day one, Obama is following the plan of Cloward & Piven, two professors at Columbia University. They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system with government spending and entitlement demands. Add up the clues below. Taken individually they're alarming. Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority that desperately needs government for survival...and can be counted on to always vote for bigger government. Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.

--Universal health care. The health care bill had very little to do with health care. It had everything to do with unionizing millions of hospital and health care workers, as well as adding 15,000 to 20,000 new IRS agents (who will join government employee unions). Obama doesn't care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans will add trillions to the national debt. What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government. Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill in the middle of a depression?

--Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming. It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama's biggest contributors. Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants. They will kickback hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power. The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars, bigger homes and businesses helps Obama "spread the wealth around."

-- Make Puerto Rico a state. Why? Who's asking for a 51st state? Who's asking for millions of new welfare recipients and government entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression? Certainly not American taxpayers. But this has been Obama's plan all along. His goal is to add two new Democrat senators, five Democrat congressman and a million loyal Democratic voters who are dependent on big government.

-- Legalize 12 million illegal immigrants. Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free health care alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America. But it adds 12 million reliable new Democrat voters who can be counted on to support big government. Add another few trillion dollars in welfare, aid to dependent children, food stamps, free medical, education, tax credits for the poor, and eventually Social Security.

-- Stimulus and bailouts. Where did all that money go? It went to Democrat contributors, organizations (ACORN), and unions -- including billions of dollars to save or create jobs of government employees across the country. It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could keep paying union dues. It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out (after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions). A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues). All those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America. The country goes broke, future generations face a bleak future, but Obama, the Democrat Party, government, and the unions grow more powerful. The ends justify the means.

-- Raise taxes on small business owners, high-income earners, and job creators. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers, redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama). Reagan wanted to dramatically cut taxes in order to starve the government. Obama wants to dramatically raise taxes to starve his political opposition.

With the acts outlined above, Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the system.

Add it up and you've got the perfect Marxist scheme -- all devised by my Columbia University college classmate Barack Obama using the Cloward and Piven Plan. Look it up yourself!

There is so much truth to this that it’s all pretty darn scary! I googled the “Cloward and Piven Plan” and came up with all sorts of links. All leading to the truth we all need to be made aware of. Unless you want to see our country become socialistic, you may want to educate yourself. Here are some of the links I found on Google.

Kate Smith Introduces ‘God Bless America’ Every American Should See This!

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Mon, 28 Jun 2010 11:43:00 -0400

This clip is from the movie "You're in the Army Now".

In case you don't know it, this is the person that is referred to as "The Fat Lady" in the trite verbalization of "It's not over till the fat lady sings". Kate Smith was born and grew up in Columbia, Missouri.

In early 1940 Kate Smith, a fiercely patriotic American and the biggest star on radio, was deeply worried about her country.

She asked Irving Berlin if he could give her a song that would re-ignite the spirit of American patriotism and faith. He said he had a song that he had written in 1917 but never used it. He said she could have it.

She sat at the piano and played it and realized how good it was. She called Mr. Berlin and told him that she couldn't take this from him for nothing. So, they agreed that any money that would be made off the song would be donated to the Boy Scouts of America.

Thanks to Kate Smith and Irving Berlin, the Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties.

Frank Sinatra said that when Kate Smith, whom he considered the greatest singer of his age, first sang this song on the radio, a million guys got 'dust' in their eyes and had to wipe the tears the 'dust' caused.

The Land That Made Me, Me

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Thu, 17 Jun 2010 20:04:00 -0400

Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot, Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot. There lived a race of innocents, and they were you and me.

For Ike was in the White House in that land where we were born, Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.

We learned to gut a muffler, we washed our hair at dawn, We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the lawn.

We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince, And Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one’s seen him since.

We danced to ‘Little Darlin’, and sang to ‘Stagger Lee’ And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land that Made Me, Me.

Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many, And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.

And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see, A boy named George with Lipstick, In the Land that Made Me, Me.

We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annet te was oh, so nice, And when they made a movie, they never made it twice.

We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three, Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp, And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.

We had a Mr. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,
And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go, At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe.

We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead, And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson, and Zeppelins were not Lead.

And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees, Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars, And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars.

And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free,

And dorms were never co-ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.

We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag, And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.

And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea, And rocket ships were

fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.

Buicks came with portholes, and side shows came with freaks, And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.

And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee, And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me.

We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues, We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea, Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions in the Land That Made Me, Me.

There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill, And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill.

And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three, And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.

But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say, And now instead of Maybelline we swear by Retin-A. They send us invitations to join Double A-RP (AARP), We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me. So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans, And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines. And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.

For those who didn't grow up in the fifties, you missed one hell of a great time in history!

What A Teacher Makes

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Thu, 17 Jun 2010 18:05:00 -0400

The importance of giving thanks to a great teacher should never be underestimated. With school out for the summer, now is a good time to pay tribute to teachers who continue to make a difference in all of us. The following story has made the rounds since 1999. I've included what the author, Taylor Mali, has to say about it at the end of his story.

It's easy to make a buck. It's a lot tougher to make a difference. ~Tom Brokaw

A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others. ~Author Unknown

The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires. ~William A. Ward

Many thanks to those who inspire!

"What Teachers Make"
By Taylor Mali

During a dinner party, a self-important business executive said, “The problem with our education system starts with teachers. What can our kids learn from people who decided their best option in life was to become a teacher? Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.”

A guest protested, “I’ve been a teacher for 20 years, and that’s simplistic and unfair.”

“Really?” the executive said. “Then be honest, what do you make?”

“I suppose you’re thinking of money,” the teacher replied. “I earn enough, but let me tell you what I make.

“I make other people’s children read, think, write, wonder, and talk about important things such as the world and their role in it.

“I make them appreciate the value of education, not simply as a way to make a living, but as a way to make a life.

“I make them work harder than they want to and accomplish more than they thought possible.

“I encourage them to be skeptical without being cynical and optimistic without being naïve.

“I make them understand that the quality of their life will be determined by their choices, and I make them take responsibility for their actions.

“I make them feel proud, capable, and worthy when they try hard.

“I make them appreciate the importance of integrity and honor in a world that too often shows little regard for either.

“I make them respect themselves and treat others with respect.

“I make them feel proud and grateful to live in America where people are entitled to be treated fairly and with respect and judged by their accomplishments and character, not by their color, creed, or size of their bank account.

"Most of all, I make a difference."

“So now,” the teacher said to the executive,” tell us what you make?”

Here is what Taylor Mali says about the poem on his website:

"I am well aware that 'What Teachers Make,' a poem I wrote in 1999, has been elevated/reduced to the level of Inspirational Cyber Spam. It started happening shortly after I posted an unattributed draft of the poem on this very website.

"Since the poem appeared on my website, I figured my name was unnecessary. But I was wrong. I suspect the text of the poem got copied, pasted, and sent by well-meaning teachers and fans. Soon enough, the poem became anonymous, and people began to edit, alter, and 'sanitize' it. There are, to my knowledge, at least five different versions of the poem out there circulating. All of them are anonymous.

"The poem has taken on a life of its own. Thomas Friedman, the New York Times columnist, quoted one of the anonymous versions in its entirety as part of his Yale graduation speech in 2003. This led to a quotation by Harvey Mackay, the syndicated business columnist. National Public Radio did a story about the adventures of the poem in 2004.

"Am I disappointed not to have received credit for writing this poem that has inspired so many? Used to be. But the truth will always come out in the end. And if I had to choose between inspiring teachers anonymously or not inspiring them at all, I would choose anonymous inspiration every time."

Mr. Mali is not only a gifted poet and philosopher (as well as a great advocate of teachers), he is a generous man with sound values about the importance of getting credit.

Start at the End

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Sun, 30 May 2010 01:27:00 -0400

The more vividly you experience where you want to go, the more likely you are to get there. When you start the journey by clearly seeing the end, you'll be confident of how to proceed.

If you start off by thinking that you'll never get there, you probably won't. Instead, realize from the beginning that a part of you is already there, and the rest of you will soon follow.

From the beginning, be the destination you wish to reach. Be the result you intend to achieve.

Make the reward at the end a part of who you are right now. And as each moment passes, the value inside you will continue to come out.

Before long, the whole world will be able to see what you have nurtured. Soon, it will be real in every way.

When you begin, send a part of yourself all the way to the end. And all of you will surely reach it in time.

Fixing The Economy

noreply@blogger.com (Jolene West) — Sat, 17 Apr 2010 15:03:00 -0400

There recently was an article in the St. Petersburg FL Times. The Business Section asked readers for ideas on: "How Would You Fix the Economy?"

I think this guy nailed it!
_____

Dear Mr. President,

Please find below my suggestion for fixing America 's economy. Instead of giving billions of dollars to companies that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan. You can call it the "Patriotic Retirement Plan":

There are about 40 million people over 50 in the work force. Pay them $1 million apiece severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire. Forty million job openings -
Unemployment fixed.

2) They MUST buy a new American CAR. Forty million cars
ordered - Auto Industry fixed.

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -
Housing Crisis fixed.

It can't get any easier than that!!

P.S. If more money is needed, have all members in Congress pay their taxes...

Mr.. President, while you're at it, make Congress retire on Social Security and Medicare. I'll bet both programs would be fixed pronto!
