One week in to my new healthy lifestyle and I already missed a day. Originally, my plan was to open my training with ten straight days. Well, I missed day # 4. A huge condo complex about a mile-and-a-half from my home caught fire and it turned inferno-like. It was basically the leading news story of the day on every Boston news outlet. Due to the fire, highway traffic (which is always pretty brutal in Eastern Massachusetts) was at a standstill and threw my nightly schedule completely out of whack. However, I got back on track both yesterday and today. I lowered my two-mile time on the track to 17:13, a small sign of progress.

I really need to change my eating habits, which are horrendous. I just love junk food. Always have…even years ago when I was running marathons. I am petrified of getting a cholesterol test, even though I really need one as I start this new program. Here are the top ten junk foods that I need to start phasing out over the course of the next month:

1) Diet Coke – We have a free soda machine at my work and I probably drink four to five cans per day. Even though it is zero calories, it’s a terrible habit that I need to break.

2) Pop Tarts – Accompanying my morning Diet Coke at work is usually a small pack of Pop Tarts. Cinammon Brown Sugar is my favorite, but I’m not afraid of inhaling the Blueberry or Strawberry packages as well. Breakfast at home is always tough for me. Getting three young kids ready in the morning is a daily event and leaves very little time for eating or running. It’s an area I need to work on.

3) Hostess Lemon Pies – No trip to a gas station/convenience store ever seems complete if I’m not walking out of there with one of these in my hands. I might as well just eat an entire bowl of sugar. It would be healthier for me.

4) Hostess Honey Buns – The gas station/convenience store is out of Lemon Pies? No worries. The Honey Bun is almost always there to save my day. They taste great when you eat them, but they sure do stick in your stomach for a while (Chines Food effect). One drawback is its stickiness. You can’t leave those empty wrappers lying around for more than a couple of seconds or you have a new set of problems, cleaning-wise.

5) Ice Cream – If a gallon ever makes it into our house on grocery shopping day, it usually won’t stay around for long. Friendly’s Cookies-n-Cream is the household favorite for this month. Edie’s Ice Cream Sandwich Ice Cream is another favorite. Also on the list: Half-Baked (Ben & Jerry’s), Peanut Butter Cup (Richardson’s) and Ice Cream Cone Crunch (Hood).

6) Pepperidge Farms Chocolate Chip Cookies – Those little bags that sit in my work’s vending machine always stare back at me from behind the glass….usually at 2:00 p.m. every afternoon.

7) Popcorn, Indiana Kettlecorn – Have you ever had a bag of this stuff? Phenomonal. I had a full-fledge addiction of this last summer. I was making 9:45 p.m. runs to Walgreens on weeknights before it closes in order to grab a bag. It’s supposedly healthy because there is no saturated fat. However, I ALWAYS eat an entire bag at a time. I can’t eat this stuff in moderation. I’ve cut back significantly, but not altogether.

8) Bertucci’s rolls – On Friday evenings, we tend to buy take-out pizza from Bertucci’s and they usually provide an extra bag of rolls. I swear that I can eat about seven of these things before touching the pizza. No lie. I can’t help but to look forward to them.

9) Grilled Cheese Sandwiches – I have three kids. Grilled cheese is a popular lunch or easy dinner choice. They’re simple to make and always taste good for me. There’s a restaurant chain where I live called Kelly’s (referred to in the movie “Good Will Hunting”). I can eat about three of their Grilled Cheese sandwiches at a pop.

10) Anything Reese’s – Peanut Butter and Chocolate. Enough said.

Honorable mention: Anything from Tim Horton’s. I’ve been travelling quite a bit to various Canadian cities on business this year and have been formally introduced to the Tim Horton’s donut shop chain. I’m getting hooked.

So there you have it. Cutting out these ten foods will be just as hard, if not harder, than sticking to a regular running routine. I can be open and honest about my faults here. They need to be corrected ASAP.

Three for three with the training regimen. Finished my two miles at the high school track in 17:15. For the second straight night, my breathing is improving. Hopefully, I will get my legs underneath me soon. I met an unwelcome friend right after Turn 3 of each of my laps around the track tonight. With the sun setting, a perfect shadow of my large gut was visible along my right hand side. It was very humbling and served as a nice reminder that I have a very very long journey ahead of me. My ultimate goal for the year will be to lose fifty pounds and run a marathon. The good thing about seeing my large gut in the shadow is that I decided to skip my nightly bowl of ice cream. By the end of the week, I will come up with a list of my seven or eight favorite junk foods that I need to give up. Ice cream will certainly be high on the list. On a real positive note, my eight-year old son, Andrew, joined me and made it through the first mile. I certainly couldn’t finish that distance at that age!

Okay, I know that it’s early to start getting excited. However, I somehow shaved 55 seconds off my two-mile time from yesterday to finish in 17:20. Thoughout today, my legs felt more heavy than actually sore. The biggest difference with today’s run was with my breathing. I started out slower on my first lap today and it made a huge difference. If I can keep shaving off a minute every day over the next couple of weeks, then I’ll be moving my family to Kenya to open up my own personal running camp!

The initial goal for me will be to run two miles per day for ten straight days. I know, I know….the experts will say that you need the rest days, but I really want to put myself through a mini running boot camp just to establish a foundation. It could be a good way to put a little shock in my body and get my head screwed on the right way.

Thanks again to those who have posted comments. I am enjoying reading your blogs as well. We can all have a little fun with our fitness kicks together.

500 yards and roughly three minutes. That’s about how long it took me to realize how dreadfully out of shape I am. My final seven laps around the local high school track this evening turned into a pretty big reality slap. I’ve got a lot of work in front of me over the upcoming months. Barring injury, at least it can’t get much worse. The end result was a two-mile run in 18:15. As I was struggling to get through my sixth lap, I couldn’t help but to think that eight years and 37 pounds ago, a two-mile run was like having a day off of running. Not anymore….at least for the forseeable future. Hopefully, the toughest part is over – just getting off the couch. By the way, thank you to everyone who have submitted some early comments to voice some encouragement. It reminds me of yet another reason I am happy about getting into a running routine. Over the past seven years I have slowly forgotten about the running community in general. Runners are, by and large, the most genuine and positive community/network on the planet. I look forward to following your journies as well! It’s a new (and most likely sore) day tomorrow. Let’s make it two in a row.

This is it…the calm before the storm. After seven years of letting myself go, it’s time to finally start getting back into a healthier routine. Running will be one of the cornerstones. I am sure tomorrow will be ugly. I’ll try to kick things off with a simple, flat two-mile run. We’re still in the planning stages as to whether or not my Kickoff Day will involve a fireworks display and a laser show…..more details to come.

I have decide to create this blog to record my new journey for a few reasons:

1) To hold myself accountable on a daily basis for a new running routine. My theory is that if I force myself to write about my experience every day, then I will have to actually stick with it on a daily basis.

2) To lose weight. It looks like I’ll be checking into this journey at 247 lbs. Ouch! I am 6’4”, which gives me a little bit of leeway, weight-wise, but not that much! My last marathon was in 2001 and I weighed 210 lbs. At the time, I felt like that was about twenty pounds too heavy. My new goal will be 197 lbs. (fifty in total). I want to be at that weight by December 31st, right in time for New Year’s Day. It would be nice to not make weight loss a new year’s resolution for the first time in a decade.

3) To improve my writing. Creating a daily blog will force me to be creative from a literary standpoint.

4) To learn more about technology. Having a blog will force me to learn new how to better utilize techology, which I will be able to utilize in these blogs. Hopefully, within a year, when I weigh 197 lbs, this blogsite will include more photos, flash demos and cool graphics.

5) To reduce stress.
