He told me my blog was chosen as one of the top 60 Quilting blogs in Canada! I was quite surprised and honoured! I was remiss in not posting about it because I got the message when I checked my phone during a 3:00 a.m. foray into the kitchen for a glass of water and it didn't fully register that I should post about it at that time. :)<br />
<br />
Anuj has given me this badge to display on my blog and I must say I am very pleased. You can find all the bloggers in the category <a href="https://blog.feedspot.com/canada_quilting_blogs/">at this post</a> and maybe you'll find some new Canadian Quilters to follow. Thank you for reading my blog!<br />

This quilt is 106" square. In the photo above my husband and son are standing on our front deck and as you can see the quilt is touching the ground and reaches up to the downspout coming from the eaves trough. This is the largest quilt I have ever made.<br />

All the fabrics in the quilt top are Kona Solids. The background is Kona Nightfall as is the binding. This quilt is made with the Swoon pattern by Camille Roskelley of Thimble Blossoms. The Swoon quilt has 9 squares. I made seven more to make the quilt four squares by four squares. (The squares are 24")</div>

I have been long awaiting the arrival of the new cork fabric I spoke of in the last post because of course I ordered some extra for myself to sew with. Yesterday I made a cork Baker Street Bag and today I made another. This pattern is a <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/2017/12/new-free-video-baker-street-bag.html">free video and pattern</a> from Sara of Sew Sweetness.<br />

<br /><br />
Hi! Well, this was quite the project let me tell you! But I am now very good at sewing Swoon blocks which for some reason used to boggle my mind. I have five more blocks to go on my own Swoon quilt (the regular 80" x 80" sized "Classic Swoon".) This one is 106" x 106" and is made for my Aunt and Uncle's King sized bed. As you can see it takes up my whole kitchen floor! (Don't mind the dishwasher running in the background in the video.)<br /><br />
<br /><br />
If you follow me on Instagram you saw all the blocks and their colour inspiration. The colours for these blocks are chosen from the artwork of Canadian artist Ted Harris. This was at the request of my Aunt and Uncle who love his artwork. The book of art I was using is called "O Canada" and has paintings of all the provinces and territories in Canada.<br /><br />
<br /><br />
I am not about to attempt to quilt this massive quilt on my home machine so I took a little highway drive to the next town over and dropped it off for long arm quilting at the quilt shop there. While I was there I booked in my own Swoon so now I have even more motivation to get that 5 year WIP finished! (And I know I can do it now too!)<br /><br />
<br /><br />
I will absolutely blog the finished quilt. Hopefully my husband and son can hold it up for me. They might need ladders though. :)Anitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13126307820923149514noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737349135463679899.post-83061538767636249892018-02-03T09:02:00.001-07:002018-02-03T09:02:14.923-07:00Valentine's Flash Sale 15% off on EtsyHello! She kept coming home with her school agenda and homework soaking wet (usually with milk, yuck!) because her drink containers leaked in her lunch bag which leaked all over her back pack. A mother's lament! This was generally due to carelessly stowing the drink containers in the lunch back either upside down or without closing them properly. Despite my many pleas to for her to be more careful. To fix this problem I made a new lunch bag and lined the inside with vinyl. No leaks so far this month!<br />

<h4>
This lunch bag is made with the Morsel Lunch Bag pattern which is part of the <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/minikins/?wpam_id=126">Minikins Pattern bundle</a> by Sara Lawson of Sew Sweetness. The <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/minikins/?wpam_id=126">Minikins Pattern bundle</a> is a fantastic bundle of patterns and each pattern has an instructional video. </h4>
If you've seen Sara's videos on YouTube you know how well done they are and they really help in understanding how the bags go together. The patterns also come with step by step photos and instructions.<br />

<br />
<br />
I made my Morsel Lunch bag with my long treasured Heather Ross "Far Far Away" prints. Of course a unicorn needed to be featured front and centre because my daughter, like most nine-year-olds, loves unicorns.<br />

<br />
<br />
The lunch bag has an awesome zipper gusset that is a great opportunity to feature another favorite fabric. I used the cute little snails from the line as you can see.<br />
<br />
This bag did offer up a bit of a challenge for me in putting it together but I consider myself an intermediate bag maker and it turned out really well. I just followed the written instructions and photos because the video wasn't released yet. All the videos are now out for the <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/minikins/?wpam_id=126">Minikins Pattern bundle</a>.<br />

I used insul-brite insulating fleece inside the lining to keep cool things cool and hot things hot while they're sitting in her school locker waiting for lunch time. I also ironed an <a href="https://clintonmoderncreative.com/collections/interfacing-stablizers/products/sew-lazy-slicker-iron-on-glossy-vinyl-interfacing?variant=45966088968">iron-on vinyl product</a> onto the lighter prints that I used for my lining to make my bag water proof and prevent these exasperating leaks that we have been experiencing.<br />

<br />
I have been wanting to try a rainbow version of this quilt since I wrote the pattern last year and I made this quilt with scraps and charm squares from my stash.<br />
<br />
<h4>
This quilt is made with my Canadian Flag Pixelated Heart Quilts pattern found on my <a href="https://www.daydreamsofquilts.com/products/canadian-flag-pixelated-heart-quilts-pdf-pattern">website here</a> and on <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/523926857/canadian-flag-pixelated-heart-quilts-pdf?ref=shop_home_active_2">Etsy</a>. The pattern has two versions of the quilt, a heart shaped flag and a flag in a heart. I also sell these quilt as custom orders.</h4>
My pattern shows the quilt with a red background but it can be any background colour you choose... even rainbow! Any flag can be substituted for the Canadian flag so long as you know how to make your flag. Some countries such as France and Italy have flags that would be so easy to put into a quilt. I know there are a few Union Jack flag patterns out there too.<br />

There are still loads of scrap in my sewing room so I guess I better cut out another one. I will be at the Spring Etsy Pop-Up in Edmonton at the Aviation Museum on the May long weekend and I'm hoping to bring a few Canadian Flag quilts along.<br />

I asked my Instagram followers if they thought I should write a pattern for it and was told "yes" so finally I have the pattern ready for the <a href="https://www.daydreamsofquilts.com/products/wine-tote-bag-pdf-pattern">Wine Tote Bag</a>.<br />

The wine tote bag fits one bottle of wine perfectly and it uses bag foam which helps to protect your precious cargo from bumps along the way from one place to another. The most fun part, in my opinion, is choosing the fussy cuts for the wine labels.</div>

If you missed out on the <a href="https://www.studio39fabrics.com/collections/fat-quarters/products/paper-obsessed-fat-quarter-bundle">Paper Obsessed</a> line it's now on Sale at Studio 39 Fabrics. I have quite a few fabrics from this line and they are fun. I liked using them to make notebook covers.<br />
<br />
I hope you enjoyed this bit of fabric eye candy this evening as much as I did. :)<br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8xCzzcmaM7xzpQ3DPEq7KJmGI2NpkNTE4Uz1iJ599JVFyPAIWOSDVBQ6lHMoTIERCEw13L0eD_5cxBAxr4ME8RWVr_hBdGVUYlyE1dlG-Ou1PO8rNgf-QEDlwaa4qIwkm9vfHBBC-WS5y/s1600/IMG_9038.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1583" data-original-width="1600" height="632" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8xCzzcmaM7xzpQ3DPEq7KJmGI2NpkNTE4Uz1iJ599JVFyPAIWOSDVBQ6lHMoTIERCEw13L0eD_5cxBAxr4ME8RWVr_hBdGVUYlyE1dlG-Ou1PO8rNgf-QEDlwaa4qIwkm9vfHBBC-WS5y/s640/IMG_9038.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When I thought of this pillow I was inspired by the raw edge ruffle pillows that have been popular in decorating but I wanted to highlight the Valentine's Day theme with hearts. These hearts are cut with pinking shears so the edges will soften and fray but the pinking will help keep them from going too far.<br />

<h3>
Supplies:</h3>
<div>
<ol>
<li> Half a yard of main pillow fabric. I used <a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=253536&u=1272943&m=29190&urllink=www%2Ecraftsy%2Ecom%2Fquilting%2Fsupplies%2Fkona%2Dcotton%2Dfabric%2Dby%2Dthe%2Dyard%2F20220&afftrack=">Kona Snow</a>.</li>
<li> Fabric for the hearts. I used 6" strips of <a href="http://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=253536&u=1272943&m=29190&urllink=www%2Ecraftsy%2Ecom%2Fquilting%2Fsupplies%2Fboundless%2Dblenders%2Dombre%2Dall%2Dcolors%2Dprecut%2Dfabric%2F457585&afftrack=">Boundless Ombre</a> fabrics. If using these strips you will need about four strips.</li>
<li> A heart template. (I used an acrylic heart template from Creative Memories from my scrapbooking supplies that was 3.5 inches wide by 4 inches tall. If you don't have a scrapbooking template you can make a heart template with quilter's template plastic and clip art from your computer. Print out a heart, trace it onto the plastic with a Sharpie marker and cut out.)</li>
<li> A disappearing ink fabric pen or a Fixion pen.</li>
<li> Pinking shears.</li>
<li> Iron.</li>
<li> Sewing Machine.</li>
<li>18" zipper with nylon teeth</li>
<li>16" pillow form</li>
<li>pins or Wonder Clips</li>
</ol>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 1: Trace</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Keep your fabric strip folded in half (wrong sides together) the way it comes off of the roll. With your fabric pen trace the heart template all the way up the strip. I was able to get six hearts traced into one side of the strips.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 2: Cut</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Cut the hearts out with the pinking shears. You will be cutting through two layers of fabric. Keep the hearts in pairs wrong sides together. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Also cut the half yard of main pillow fabric down to 16.5" by width of fabric. Trim off selvages and <b>cut two 16.5" squares</b>. <b>Cut one of the squares in half to make two 8.25" x 16.5" rectangles</b>. Then <b>cut a 3.5" x 16.5" strip</b> from the remaining fabric. (this will cover the zipper on back) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
S<b>tep 3: Press</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Fold the heart pairs in half vertically and press a center crease with your iron. If you used a Frixion pen this will remove any marks left after you cut out your hearts as well.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Step 4: Sew</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Fold the 16.5" square for the pillow front in half and finger press to make a center line crease. Line up a heart pair on the top left side of the center crease. Leave at least a quarter inch from the top of the square for the seam allowance (so your heart does not get caught in the seam later).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Start at the top of the square with your needle lined up with the crease of the heart pair. Sew down the crease. Pause with your needle down and line up another heart pair below the first one. Sew down the crease of that pair. Continue with two more heart pairs in this row.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Start again at the top of the square on the right side of the finger pressed crease you made. Place another heart pair a quarter inch from the top. Sew this row of heart pairs down the center crease lines.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Continue with the last two rows on either side of the pillow front.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6kGxwi4VwBIDtRhEddpb35GmzwbF4b3ECIeMZ9EBcZjQNo5GQ3fsZReJIhAj7VeA1vSwO0KIqLHTJ1-JvuxAoUsvmUNCMIijMKfPwHWzW99zOuR_rUfNOGTSiT-A7DTrClH-IqT7M9Xfy/s1600/IMG_9034.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh6kGxwi4VwBIDtRhEddpb35GmzwbF4b3ECIeMZ9EBcZjQNo5GQ3fsZReJIhAj7VeA1vSwO0KIqLHTJ1-JvuxAoUsvmUNCMIijMKfPwHWzW99zOuR_rUfNOGTSiT-A7DTrClH-IqT7M9Xfy/s640/IMG_9034.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
<b>Step 5: Add the Pillow Back</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
Create a pillow back as you prefer. You could make an envelope back but you would need to cut the backing pieces bigger than 8.25 inches to allow for a hem and overlap of fabric. Below are directions for a <b>hidden zipper pillow back</b>.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fold the 3.5" strip by 16.5" strip in half wrong sides together along the length of the strip and press.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Take your 18" zipper and place it face up with the zipper pull on the left end.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Line up the raw edges of the pressed strip with the top edge of the zipper tape. Place an 8.25" x 16.5" rectangle on top right side down also lined up with the top edge of the zipper tape. Clip or pin all the layers in place (I find Wonder Clips to be easier than pins).</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sew the fabrics to the zipper tape leaving at least 1/8 inch of tape next to the zipper teeth (so the fabric doesn't catch in the zipper). This will be about an eighth of an inch seam.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Flip the rectangle away from the zipper teeth and the strip over the zipper teeth (as it will be when the pillow is finished) and press. Top stitch just next to your seam.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Place the zipper right side up with the zipper pull on the right end. Lay the second 8.25" x 16.5" rectangle right side down along the remaining zipper tape edge and clip or pin in place.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Sew the fabric to the zipper tape as before with about an eighth of an inch seam. Flip the rectangle away from the zipper teeth and press. Top stitch just next to this seam.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Slide the zipper pull to the center of the zipper </b>(make sure to do this so you can turn your pillow cover right side out later). Hold the open zipper ends together and baste them together by sewing over the zipper with your machine where the zipper extends past the fabric.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Fold the strip that hides the zipper over the zipper and baste in place on either end with an eighth of an inch seam.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Trim off the excess zipper ends so the zipper is even with the fabric.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Place the pillow back right sides together with the pillow front and pin or clip in place. Sew all the way around (including over the zipper ends) with a quarter inch seam.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Trim corners on an angle (do not cut through stitching) and turn the pillow right side out through the opening in the zipper. Poke out the corners and insert a 16" pillow form.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Enjoy your ruffly heart pillow and Happy Valentine's Day!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Feel free to pin! ^^^</div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Other Ideas:</b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
You could add more layers of hearts to make it more ruffly. Just keep in mind that many layers will be difficult for some machines to sew through. Four or six layers of hearts should be okay though.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You could cut 20 single hearts (instead of 20 pairs) and applique them down onto the pillow front if you don't like them flapping freely. It would be best to reduce your stitch length and sew around the hearts twice to keep them from fraying past the stitches. This will take longer to make.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Note that this pillow is meant to be a decorative accent pillow. I doubt that it will do well going through the wash so try not to spill your champagne and chocolate covered strawberries on it on Valentine's Day. ;)<br />

<h2>
I-Spy Pouches</h2>
<br />
For Christmas gifts for teachers this year I used the I-Spy Pouch Pattern from the <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/minikins/?wpam_id=126">Minikins</a> Pattern Collection by Sara Lawson of <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/?wpam_id=126">Sew Sweetness</a>. I made Five all together in all three sizes but in the Christmas rush I only got photos of two.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYeE_WMkTg-dse08wJORkAr727e_WR7tpBh2ENHXySYUN6GRjwvDsqC41rMrygYhXhMlGaNxiH-PEMaKAbmAa4DvB81ZvBGQjK1ZAbW4g5A5moBQ_F8lKJaoQIIbiku7mhKppJY530Rh1n/s1600/I-Spy+Pouch+for+a+teacher+gift.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYeE_WMkTg-dse08wJORkAr727e_WR7tpBh2ENHXySYUN6GRjwvDsqC41rMrygYhXhMlGaNxiH-PEMaKAbmAa4DvB81ZvBGQjK1ZAbW4g5A5moBQ_F8lKJaoQIIbiku7mhKppJY530Rh1n/s640/I-Spy+Pouch+for+a+teacher+gift.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made purple ones for our pre-school teacher and our grade 4 teacher. Plus a green one for the pre-school teacher's assistant. I thought these pouches would be handy for teachers because of the see through vinyl window on the front. They can be used as pencil cases of course but they could also be used to hold special items for presenting during a lesson, game pieces or game cards for learning games and much more. These pouches were made with <a href="https://clintonmoderncreative.com/collections/libs-elliott">Libs Elliott "Tattooed" fabrics</a>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I also made a large dark blue one for my son's junior high science teacher. He is a male teacher so I tried to make it more masculine and used the large lightening bolt fabric from the Tattooed line. I had asked my son to pick his favorite teacher for a gift as they have so many teachers in Junior High. But then I attended the high school band concert and I was so impressed with his music teacher that I had to make her a Christmas gift too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjElYEAvvwwQY9VWEix33VwI6OBGMtSm6DT3vQcZbiH04eUJnOuJ9ckbHXm0LbeamFdYkJVCFx8Kb001MmUIgjO-CdkG3EcBgZikugNbHefa7qI-Mb5YESWc8_MJVNuJu5L5MwkUlsEqaYD/s1600/Music+themed+I-Spy+Pouch+for+a+teacher+gift.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="800" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjElYEAvvwwQY9VWEix33VwI6OBGMtSm6DT3vQcZbiH04eUJnOuJ9ckbHXm0LbeamFdYkJVCFx8Kb001MmUIgjO-CdkG3EcBgZikugNbHefa7qI-Mb5YESWc8_MJVNuJu5L5MwkUlsEqaYD/s640/Music+themed+I-Spy+Pouch+for+a+teacher+gift.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I used fabrics from my stash to make a music themed I-Spy Pouch. This would be especially useful for holding reeds, strings and other small parts of musical instruments.<br />
<br />
All <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/minikins/?wpam_id=126">Minikins patterns</a> come with vidoes that Sara has recorded (and is recording) included. These videos are very well done and really make it easy to understand the instructions in the pattern. Sara also offers a <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/minikins-notions-kit/?wpam_id=126">Minikins Notions Kit</a> which is how I got my vinyl for these bags and even after making five I still have enough vinyl for one or two more.<br />
<br />
I love making these I-Spy Pouches and I love the <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/minikins/?wpam_id=126">Minikins Pattern Bundle</a>. I will post more Minikins projects as I make them.<br />

<br />
This first quilt is made with Alison Glass Chroma batiks. I cut my fat quarters into 10 x 10 inch squares and sewed them together into a patchwork quilt top.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEEax34kMJVu-s9djHw6D9KmPzT01IWrP7vDwT-a6GHif3YA9wZdr47b8Zs6zAHGSIcdQ6mr5111Ip3Nw69v8j6-lAn6ZUY_r34NgSph-ERbpQQ97UWDfB14OlvW-OisayyTZIB2xfXyj_/s1600/IMG_8977.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1452" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEEax34kMJVu-s9djHw6D9KmPzT01IWrP7vDwT-a6GHif3YA9wZdr47b8Zs6zAHGSIcdQ6mr5111Ip3Nw69v8j6-lAn6ZUY_r34NgSph-ERbpQQ97UWDfB14OlvW-OisayyTZIB2xfXyj_/s640/IMG_8977.JPG" width="580" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted it simply with horizontal lines in grey thread. I had no idea I would put the backing on this quilt when I bought it but it is really the perfect backing for this quilt. The words are all words to describe colours or descriptive colour names. This is a wideback from Windham Fabrics.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjPGBkMi2LqO9VjfZzf-_0mNjUGDzmiBc-_-Ygv24-LPTGkMAvCaDM3swYYKfA6yL4JaxA9ZVHY5R5Apnyk5D7CQ0JtZCzWUdalNsAgNRdaLiF08alXOBL5VFVMU7M148hvCFJwbRNsf94/s1600/IMG_8980.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1365" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjPGBkMi2LqO9VjfZzf-_0mNjUGDzmiBc-_-Ygv24-LPTGkMAvCaDM3swYYKfA6yL4JaxA9ZVHY5R5Apnyk5D7CQ0JtZCzWUdalNsAgNRdaLiF08alXOBL5VFVMU7M148hvCFJwbRNsf94/s640/IMG_8980.JPG" width="546" /></a></div>
<br />
I bound the quilt with black kona machine sewn to the front and the back with black thread.<br />
<br />
This throw quilt measures 56.5" x 75" is available for sale on <a href="https://www.daydreamsofquilts.com/products/modern-patchwork-quilt-made-with-alison-glass-chroma-batiks">our website</a> and on <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/570723956/modern-rainbow-quilt-patchwork-quilt-for?ref=shop_home_active_2">Etsy</a>. It is sure to brighten any room.<br />
<br />
I also made a cute baby quilt using white Kona, 2 1/2 inch strips of Kona in rainbow colours and fussy cuts of treasured Heather Ross prints.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_JTR72p5nmlc5nZJjPnUUnNaDpKt5z6YBGTLXuwNypcLJIvaiBeF2FX8BIr5kR7Tj6SqCshg7FmzN7XhsTqw1dFIwlI9BVlWkP0mX1l4WkXhpE0aeA3czX4P9Xm-Vb73DWYaQIoRo_Luu/s1600/IMG_8962.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1218" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_JTR72p5nmlc5nZJjPnUUnNaDpKt5z6YBGTLXuwNypcLJIvaiBeF2FX8BIr5kR7Tj6SqCshg7FmzN7XhsTqw1dFIwlI9BVlWkP0mX1l4WkXhpE0aeA3czX4P9Xm-Vb73DWYaQIoRo_Luu/s640/IMG_8962.JPG" width="486" /></a></div>
<br />
I quilted the white with wavy lines in white thread and the rainbow colours are quilted in wavy lines with coordinating thread colours. I quilted around the princess and the pea and around the frog pond in the little framed out prints at the top and bottom of the quilt. The binding is purple ombre fabric.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1OMTGMDr1qJAvvMqZdsnb8TvNm4hRHZy7pnnqXJwc5stuXp8_rLGBNTnW7TvfwVFf7V7k7UL28MTlcbWUtTtqPDNl0V6zRnYpo2H0ai0qnTC8Y2KR6Kv7YGZm6r1KH6c-SOhkfUHAPK6S/s1600/IMG_8963.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1OMTGMDr1qJAvvMqZdsnb8TvNm4hRHZy7pnnqXJwc5stuXp8_rLGBNTnW7TvfwVFf7V7k7UL28MTlcbWUtTtqPDNl0V6zRnYpo2H0ai0qnTC8Y2KR6Kv7YGZm6r1KH6c-SOhkfUHAPK6S/s640/IMG_8963.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
It's tricky to use the princess and the pea print in quilts because it doesn't really cut out to a normal block measurement. I framed it in pink and set it on it's own.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE1EhrI6a4wqUuYFVAkB2Bkj7eb74QycEDoCKi-Q1ACG9ejWss86MPX7pu4kn3amx45lsd-FVU3nu88yW8IbaAYNpaX8pso7EwyqH2tV3Nj-cgcCntnxHcufpLev5pd3XYvvHFmj1QlJuP/s1600/IMG_8969.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1067" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiE1EhrI6a4wqUuYFVAkB2Bkj7eb74QycEDoCKi-Q1ACG9ejWss86MPX7pu4kn3amx45lsd-FVU3nu88yW8IbaAYNpaX8pso7EwyqH2tV3Nj-cgcCntnxHcufpLev5pd3XYvvHFmj1QlJuP/s640/IMG_8969.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
I did the same with the print of the adorable frogs at the swimming hole.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNuEzmxp_PfJ0Dp5wbc6SoO6BoHFUQ68wWHiO9GzcS33Uh83Ei35T6t6tVikcP0U-ytZUT_gDQszJ3nVzkTcEJzCtxQcHpfquyBvjK-C3DwmWVEigbb_8dnBwCYEoC7VHd463n_T0y1Tf5/s1600/IMG_8966.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNuEzmxp_PfJ0Dp5wbc6SoO6BoHFUQ68wWHiO9GzcS33Uh83Ei35T6t6tVikcP0U-ytZUT_gDQszJ3nVzkTcEJzCtxQcHpfquyBvjK-C3DwmWVEigbb_8dnBwCYEoC7VHd463n_T0y1Tf5/s640/IMG_8966.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here you can see the different thread colours in the rainbow strips.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I backed it with cute Cotton + Steel Magic Forest squirrels. This quilt was fun to make!<br />
<br />
This crib quilt measures 31.5" x 44" and is available for sale on <a href="https://www.daydreamsofquilts.com/products/modern-rainbow-baby-quilt-with-heather-ross-prints-and-kona-solid-fabrics">our website</a> and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/584288621/rainbow-baby-quilt-quilt-for-sale-crib?ref=shop_home_active_3">on Etsy</a>.Anitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13126307820923149514noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737349135463679899.post-71092641434365483302017-12-29T16:50:00.002-07:002018-01-02T19:00:36.151-07:00The Oslo Craft Bag Pattern ReviewHello! I'm back with another pattern review. This one is the Oslo Craft Bag by Sara Lawson of (affiliate link) <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/?wpam_id=126" target="_blank">Sew Sweetness</a>. This is a free pattern that you receive when you <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/newsletter/?wpam_id=126" target="_blank">sign up for her newsletter</a>. So you can't really go wrong there! :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUC1F34UCSKTxVksqHOqvI1oMw4LOpG0zeFMLHjTWPZLYQpK6boDRqCFvRoirNOPxVWOvjUpVcf9QG0N4uS6nkR2-N6TM0pwDA1UuD6RJHhLgq04AkSfJZP9Qszd6PdCUEab0yoT6FSsCT/s1600/IMG_2350.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiUC1F34UCSKTxVksqHOqvI1oMw4LOpG0zeFMLHjTWPZLYQpK6boDRqCFvRoirNOPxVWOvjUpVcf9QG0N4uS6nkR2-N6TM0pwDA1UuD6RJHhLgq04AkSfJZP9Qszd6PdCUEab0yoT6FSsCT/s640/IMG_2350.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I made this one for my Mom for Christmas. She is an avid knitter so I think it will get a lot of use. I used Tula Pink fabrics from her Eden line for this bag and <a href="https://emmalinebags.com/products/rectangular-ring-1-25-mm-in-copper-finish-4-pack" target="_blank">copper bag hardware</a> from Emmaline Bags. The sun was going down again when I finished the bag and in the Christmas rush I didn't have time for more photos but I think it's pretty here bathed in golden light.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I fussy cut the fabrics for all of the pockets and put the lotus flower in the centre because my Mom loves yoga and the lotus is often associated with yoga.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbNiR0nfkn65xfLAjT1x8ONRdPrP7-pySN7NBgapsCuSo-JFLqn3a3CJDCBkLhkzT0t_84GQ9NInB5htv-QZsGcusnOXdFO6-0KWn-x6Ij3INkB0eBTt7UzM63XpWyXe0qRltWlvccBmlT/s1600/IMG_2351.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhbNiR0nfkn65xfLAjT1x8ONRdPrP7-pySN7NBgapsCuSo-JFLqn3a3CJDCBkLhkzT0t_84GQ9NInB5htv-QZsGcusnOXdFO6-0KWn-x6Ij3INkB0eBTt7UzM63XpWyXe0qRltWlvccBmlT/s640/IMG_2351.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is a lot of cutting for this bag but there are many opportunities to play with fabric and fussy cut your prints to really highlight them. The side pockets have pretty pleats and snap closures. I used my KAM snaps in matching colours for these. I used a yellow snap on the flap and a pink receiving snap on the pink.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNu24ROblXYkShNPZG79wXL7d7hxMlPOBhbF7W5X5PNqaf_gCWbSRRjb51mex3VA-QWne4tndQ4y62r3jppEvQMyQJ7dv-4R6QCWfnMicuPQcSoD_PKXPpsFJTkKrzhIg9uoMp58Jivnks/s1600/IMG_2349.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNu24ROblXYkShNPZG79wXL7d7hxMlPOBhbF7W5X5PNqaf_gCWbSRRjb51mex3VA-QWne4tndQ4y62r3jppEvQMyQJ7dv-4R6QCWfnMicuPQcSoD_PKXPpsFJTkKrzhIg9uoMp58Jivnks/s640/IMG_2349.JPG" width="480" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">One of the side pockets in progress.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
This bag is a real challenge to make and it was another two day project for me. There are clearly defined steps that make it easy to figure out where to take breaks in your project. Sara's patterns are always very well done with many step by step photos to guide you.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRHh9nId_w4uhwOY8chs2d2XHbi4Q1Q1DzM-4O4KE4rFDyZRNcN3w-0na-KQQ9TJ0Ra7CM8e2gOcuPk4aIbLFSouZ_4vZK7cnkA4lw8Q-SC0fA3_8mofHD9iEnzEtv5rVMp5SGCFZklClH/s1600/IMG_2352.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRHh9nId_w4uhwOY8chs2d2XHbi4Q1Q1DzM-4O4KE4rFDyZRNcN3w-0na-KQQ9TJ0Ra7CM8e2gOcuPk4aIbLFSouZ_4vZK7cnkA4lw8Q-SC0fA3_8mofHD9iEnzEtv5rVMp5SGCFZklClH/s640/IMG_2352.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the inside of the bag. It has two sections with a divider and also two slip pockets. On the outside there are the three pockets on the front which have darts on the bottom corners to make them rounded and also stand out from the bag. There are the two pleated side pockets with the flaps and snaps and there is one large pocket on the back. You could make the back pocket a divided pocket and turn it into two pockets or you could repeat the three front pockets on the back.<br />
<br />
This was fun to make and I have plans to make one for myself with sewing themed fabrics. The only part that gave me trouble was sewing the straps. If you have a rivet setter and rivets it would make that step much easier. (On my wish list!) Give this bag a try!Anitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13126307820923149514noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737349135463679899.post-31897847359705122612017-12-26T11:43:00.002-07:002018-01-02T19:00:52.935-07:00The Ansel Camera Bag Pattern ReviewIn the past few months I have become a big fan of (affiliate link) <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/?wpam_id=126" target="_blank">Sew Sweetness</a> bag patterns by Sara Lawson. I have added quite a few of them to my pattern collection. My sister and I both enjoy photography and I know that my sister wants to add to her photography equipment so for Christmas this year I sewed her the large Ansel Camera bag using <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/products/ansel-camera-bag/?wpam_id=126" target="_blank">Sara's pattern</a>.<br />

<br />
For the outside of the bag I used Tula Pink's "Deer Me" fabric from her Moonshine and a green Kona solid for the straps.<br />

For the inside of the bag I used fabric that I created by photographing my Grandmother's (and of course my sister's Grandmother too) Home Ec notes and laying them out together. I had this printed by Spoonflower. This fabric is available <a href="https://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/5132465-grandma-s-home-ec-notes-001-by-daydreams_of_quilts" target="_blank">here</a>. This adds a special personal element to the camera bag.<br />
<br />
The Ansel Camera bag pattern is very thorough and detailed with photographs for each step plus there is a <a href="https://sewsweetness.com/2015/05/tutorial-adding-a-zipper-mesh-pocket-to-your-ansel-camera-bag.html" target="_blank">Sew Sweetness blog tutorial</a> to make the mesh zipper pocket for the inside of the lid. It took me two days to make this bag. The large version has two removable dividers, as shown above, to create three compartments in the bag. The interior sides and bottom have foam in them to protect camera gear plus the entire exterior of the bag is made with bag foam as well.<br />
<br />

The sun was going down when I finished so I apologize for the darker photos. The strap is nice and long to enable the carrier to carry the bag cross-body which is great as it keeps your hands free to hold your camera and keeps the bag more secure. The clips are a nice professional bag touch.<br />

I am very pleased with how this bag turned out. The pattern is excellent and includes three sizes of camera bags. I definitely want to make one for myself now. Sara's patterns are allowed to be used to sell the bags you make so I might sew a few and see how they do a markets. If you're up for a bag making challenge and/or you need a great camera bag I highly recommend this pattern.Anitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13126307820923149514noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-737349135463679899.post-87038330329471159462017-12-23T12:35:00.000-07:002017-12-23T12:35:11.153-07:00Cut and Sew Projects Review - A Cautionary TaleMany of us are in the midst of last minute Christmas gift sewing. I had a few projects to finish this past week while my kids were at school that I had ordered from Spoonflower. Here is the story of those projects.<br />
<br />
Back in November Spoonflower had a buy one get one free sale on fat quarters (basically 50% off sale). I love Spoonflower, I even have some of my own fabrics listed there, but I must say it is an expensive route to go for fabric. I bought four fat quarters and even with the sale price and cashing in my "spoonflower bucks" from selling my own fabrics the bill came to $29.98 including shipping. "Well, I guess I will suck it up," I thought, "because these are Christmas gifts for my daughters after all."<br />
<br />
Fast foward to this past week when I finally have a chance to sew these projects. I ordered two pencil case cut and sew projects and one stuffed toy cut and sew. The other fat quarter was a unicorn print that I simply made into a pillow cover. (That one turned out but it's wrapped and I don't have a photo.)<br />
<br />
Warning: the images below may be disturbing to some viewers ;)<br />
<br />
Here is the first project I made - a cut and sew dachshund pencil case. Super cute in 2D. Not so great sewn up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9E__Pr1K62Dbjv7BMC4MNmI_SPLr72pyLhBTSK9TUm6OtkpKIgFdxHKm_SVhlpz45Pt025nr-WzAgceppa4H3GfV-TKQE2ySgL8KRsWt-TpLhnIt7R8AbMluwxB5YFb4O_nvafIPGD0vW/s1600/IMG_2392.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1383" data-original-width="1600" height="552" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi9E__Pr1K62Dbjv7BMC4MNmI_SPLr72pyLhBTSK9TUm6OtkpKIgFdxHKm_SVhlpz45Pt025nr-WzAgceppa4H3GfV-TKQE2ySgL8KRsWt-TpLhnIt7R8AbMluwxB5YFb4O_nvafIPGD0vW/s640/IMG_2392.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, I'm not trying to be mean to the designer here. I really love the designs. I just feel that perhaps the designer does not sew and that perhaps a sewist should have been consulted. I am assuming that because the seam allowances do not translate well to a finished project and the instructions were barely there. I have been sewing for many years and I don't often have projects fail this badly.<br />
<br />
Above is the front of the pencil case and below is the back. The adorable dachshund design did have legs and feet and a cute pointy tail but as you can see that has turned into a stubby puckered mess in the finished project and I did trim and clip the seam allowances (despite not having been instructed to). Also, this turns out to be quite a large pencil case. Almost the size of an actual wiener dog!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBmjdXbbEdmLOY7f3zddnYKe9aWmcBP9OUrKk5oX_5VQ4wmIl1p9c1E6Aen4o43SGBMWeEa_rGIM72rEOQtn7rmhz_FADwDQeLHUeNAeWEAphkI6dDN2Z7Qyiq-V3kU8RiJqEr_LNJuh5w/s1600/IMG_2391.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBmjdXbbEdmLOY7f3zddnYKe9aWmcBP9OUrKk5oX_5VQ4wmIl1p9c1E6Aen4o43SGBMWeEa_rGIM72rEOQtn7rmhz_FADwDQeLHUeNAeWEAphkI6dDN2Z7Qyiq-V3kU8RiJqEr_LNJuh5w/s640/IMG_2391.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Here is what the instructions printed on the fabric say:<br />
<br />
1. Cut out the two puppy images<br />
2. Put right sides together and sew, leave a gap on the side for the zip<br />
3. Install the zip in the usual way you do it<br />
4. Turn right side out<br />
5: Fill with all your pencils.<br />
<br />
Okay. This is just not adequate. The way I usually install a zipper on a zipper pouch with a lining because I do not like raw seams in my pouch that can fray and get caught in the zipper. So I proceeded in my usual way. I would say that could have been where I went wrong but I think the stubby legs and tail and the puckering would have occurred with or without the lining.<br />
<br />
I am very disappointed with how this project turned out and I am writing this review to save someone else from the same sad fate. Especially if the person was a beginner this would be so sad and could discourage someone from sewing. I have been sewing most of my life and I am unhappy with this. I will say again though that I do love the design and if I were to order it again it would be used as an applique on a bag or a quilt.<br />
<br />
Despite my disappointment though I know my three-year old will not care and will happily stuff this doggy with pencils and markers and it will be alright. This was an expensive failure of a project and as a pencil case I give this project 1 star.<br />
<br />
I thought the stuffed animal cut and sew from the same designer might go better.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimxPNz5vDxSr9X_SEwiCDv-PMjojcjRIFzm4PTuWTZK1L-bmixggvee97eJdgNHPiCqf2t5k0DYmB2KcMA24DEj4AQ7gHDXwabVQdIJgyx7W2e0GCHkA_PpkP24rY0Tfw6jq_6vLc2-D8U/s1600/IMG_2395.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimxPNz5vDxSr9X_SEwiCDv-PMjojcjRIFzm4PTuWTZK1L-bmixggvee97eJdgNHPiCqf2t5k0DYmB2KcMA24DEj4AQ7gHDXwabVQdIJgyx7W2e0GCHkA_PpkP24rY0Tfw6jq_6vLc2-D8U/s640/IMG_2395.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This one turned out a bit better but again the instructions would not suit a beginning sewer as they were barely there. The nose and tail were hard to get stuffing into and again his legs and feet nearly disappear. The instructions for the sleeping bag were cut out, sew right sides together and turn right side out. I quilted the sleeping bag to batting and sewed a linen lining as well. So all seams are enclosed on the sleeping bag. There were markings on the print to show where to clip and trim the seam allowance but the legs and feet did not turn out well. I give this project 2 stars out of 5. It is super cute despite the seam allowance issues and my three-year old will love it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl8qQjJpxpGxWldUY3YrXLkirHxeq-lVl4dZk4Lt8GOAkRzuI4zhZhhUCK9nS5M3xgRaMYUBBucHdXNPBflra0FG3dupdI0IkB4gc8FOpBr8p-wAvjn3QkfPZolkRiXU5We44UIBT_opFG/s1600/IMG_2394.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgl8qQjJpxpGxWldUY3YrXLkirHxeq-lVl4dZk4Lt8GOAkRzuI4zhZhhUCK9nS5M3xgRaMYUBBucHdXNPBflra0FG3dupdI0IkB4gc8FOpBr8p-wAvjn3QkfPZolkRiXU5We44UIBT_opFG/s640/IMG_2394.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The final cut and sew project was the whale pencil case:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgODvZEu5nDK9z2_t1AV_rbeEO4qSev-fBm9E5g5LoOtTKWz1-BT1wsymzo8mfYm55PxDxEGwYxViI6LWwCQWJdql1EHdUqkY27LZ3oq5p9NNQKLwQc_wM13O3ixNrX1Cm2MH4qMduajmCW/s1600/IMG_2397.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1559" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgODvZEu5nDK9z2_t1AV_rbeEO4qSev-fBm9E5g5LoOtTKWz1-BT1wsymzo8mfYm55PxDxEGwYxViI6LWwCQWJdql1EHdUqkY27LZ3oq5p9NNQKLwQc_wM13O3ixNrX1Cm2MH4qMduajmCW/s640/IMG_2397.JPG" width="622" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Again the design is adorable and the zipper pouch instructions were as barely there as the wiener dog. There were no feet to lose in the seam allowance but the tail was a nightmare to turn. I had to get my husband to turn it because my hands were hurting so badly. There is only about an inch of room to get the tail turned through where it narrows. I did again clip and trim the seam allowance but it just doesn't look right. I lined the pouch and I should have not included the tail in the lining because I couldn't turn it and push it through the outer pouch tail so now we have a big lump below the whale tail. Again 1 star for poor instructions and the final project not turning out well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I don't think my nine year old will mind the lumpy tail but I do. And again this is a huge pencil case!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These definitely would not do to sell on Etsy or at a market.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So there you have it. I think this is my first negative review on my blog. In conclusion: Beware of pre-printed cut and sew items on Spoonflower!</div>

I did several different types of shows as a vendor and I learned a lot of things. My husband and I decided 2017 would be an experimentation year with Daydreams of Quilts so we tried everything that came along. I will try to convey what I learned to you here as concisely as I can. Still, this will be a longer post so get a cup of coffee or tea and settle into a comfortable chair. :)<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our booth at the Spring Mother's Day Market in Wainwright.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our first show was the Spring Mother's Day Market in Wainwright, Alberta (where we live) and let me start by saying this show did not go well! I'll get into that in a moment but as you can see above here was our booth so I'll start with that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We have done shows in Wainwright before where we had just a table. I thought having all my things on one table made them look cheap and garage sale-y and that set people up for sticker shock when they saw the price tags. Tables run about $50.00 so it's a minimal investment but display is severely limited. We decided to try paying for a 10' x 10' booth and see if that made a difference.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We knew we were doing both indoor and outdoor shows and our booth spaces this year would be either 5' x 10' or 10' x 10' so the both needed to be convertible to either size.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I designed the booth on graph paper and my husband built it for me out of 2 x 4s and bead board. We spent about $400.00 on supplies and paint for our booth. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The boards slide into the pillars we created so it collapses down to just boards and the five box pillars for transportation. Still, it takes an hour to set up all going well. We used IKEA style screw systems that have drop in metal components that go into holes my husband drilled in the boards so they can be repeatedly screwed together and unscrewed without worry of stripping the wood. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were concerned that we didn't want the booth to be able to fall over on other vendors displays or blow over in the wind so it is very sturdy and pretty heavy too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
The booth was well received. Everyone said it looked great and it did display everything quite nicely. The problem with this particular set-up above seemed to be the bench I had in the middle with the pillows on it. People seemed reluctant to come into the booth and walk around. It might have been better not to have anything in the middle. That said, the quilt draped over the end of the bench received many compliments because it was front and centre.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The biggest issue with this show was a lack of advertising on the part of the event organizer. It was also the first really nice weekend of the spring and people wanted to be outside. They did not want to be in a community centre shopping. I had about $3,000.00 worth of products at the show and I sold one $30.00 pillow. That was it! I paid $160.00 for the booth space and donated $37.50 worth of items to the swag bags. So the show was a loss of $167.50 and two days. We knew shows in Wainwright (a town of 6,270) would not be highly successful but we did not expect such a failure.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The other problem with this show was the majority of vendors were selling commercial direct sales items like Tupperware, Scentsy, Usborn, Origami Owl etc. and we were selling handmade. It was definitely not the right show for us but all of the vendors around us complained that sales were very poor or non-existant.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCRQYxnteJ-rT8Dl_nHfhHBKlLHoGoUNa66j9X2lU1vqs6xzKsbJ1ob74Cl5HcVjoaXD_bXDUZI5cIphiCE_3mfd7CHZvYmjnD94LjEJdyk6wwcsOLjpwte-_ZhkVgbQ1Nj2ZPv77aWESF/s1600/What+I+LearnedAs+a+Vendorin+a+Year+of+Craft+Shows.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1102" data-original-width="735" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCRQYxnteJ-rT8Dl_nHfhHBKlLHoGoUNa66j9X2lU1vqs6xzKsbJ1ob74Cl5HcVjoaXD_bXDUZI5cIphiCE_3mfd7CHZvYmjnD94LjEJdyk6wwcsOLjpwte-_ZhkVgbQ1Nj2ZPv77aWESF/s640/What+I+LearnedAs+a+Vendorin+a+Year+of+Craft+Shows.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The take-away from that first show was: not all shows are created equal. The show organizer(s) play a big role in vendor success.</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, you will not always get a return on investment on things like swag bag donations. The organizer had offered free swag bags to the first 50 attendees on both days and this resulted in a crush of people at the beginning who grabbed their bags, almost ran through the show and left in less than half an hour without spending a dime.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After that show we laid low for the rest of the Spring and then signed up for the local Farmer's Market. This involved a membership fee of $20.00 and then it was $10.00 per day every time we attended as vendors. We also had to buy a 10 x 10 tent awning which cost just under $200.00.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>What I Learned at the Farmer's Market:</b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
1. People are there to buy food.</div>
<div>
2. Sometimes they will buy handmade items. In that case, clothing items sell well (especially for babies and kids).</div>
<div>
3. You never know if you will have a good day or a bad day at the Farmer's Market.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
That being said, our first day at the Farmer's Market went well with $130.00 in sales. Covered notebooks and bags were popular. We also got to meet local people and get our name out to them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Then we had a few days where we sat out in the wind and sun all day with zero sales and that was the end of the local Farmer's Market for us.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The other thing that was not so great was that the market was in an unpaved parking lot so the wind was whipping the dust around and also blowing merchandise down. Things would land in the dust and get dirty. Also being on a hot dusty parking lot in blazing hot sun for six hours was very unpleasant. Do consider the location and the implications of that before you pay for a membership.</div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>What about a bigger town?</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div>
We tried going to a Farmer's Market in a bigger centre. We went to the city of Lloydminster (population 27,804) which is an hour away. We thought that might bring in more sales. We sold nothing of handmade but my son made about $10 selling his fresh lettuce for $1 or $2 a bunch. We only tried that once because it seemed like quite an investment of time and gas to go sit in our tent and make no money. I think it we had gone more often though people would have gotten to know us and sales might have picked up. That market had a $10 membership fee and a $20 fee per day that you attend. Again it was in a parking lot but this time the lot was paved.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Perhaps if we tried the Farmer's Markets in Edmonton (metropolitan population 1.3 million) we would do better. There are quite a few handmade vendors in the Edmonton Farmer's Markets. That is a two hour highway drive from here though.</div>
<div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Corner Booth at the White Barn Market.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Another market we signed up for was the White Barn Market which was near Thorsby, Alberta and was in a field on a farm (which had a white barn of course). This market went much better than the Farmer's Markets. I felt like I was home at this market. It was all handmade vendors. Not a piece of Tupperware in sight. The first date was in the middle of August and I sold about $260.00 that day. Which seemed like a lot compared to the other shows so far this year. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When you really think about it though it wasn't really worth it. I paid $50.00 for the 10' x 10' space which wasn't too bad. However, we had to get up at 5:00 a.m. and load the kids and the dog into the van and haul everyone out there. It was a three hour drive from where we live. When you factor in fuel, food and general exhaustion I don't think it was worth it. (Keep in mind that we are a military family so we do not have close friends nearby whom we could trust to look after our kids and dog for the day.)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This market is very well advertised and promoted by the organizers plus there is usually a food truck too that's awesome. Many people from nearby cities such as Edmonton and Leduc come out to this market for a pleasant day trip.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The first week my booth was on a corner so that offered more exposure. People would also shortcut through my booth which was disconcerting on the one hand but they often saw things that caught their eye that way. Plus I got to meet one of my blog followers Ioleen that day so that was fun.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
On the way there we had one of our trailer tires lose its tread and the tire blew on the way back. We had hoped to get to Leduc (half an hour to 40 minutes from Thorsby) as we had a tire set aside for us at Canadian Tire but we had to abandon our utility trailer on the side of the highway. We did get the tire before they closed though and all was well in the end. Except that ate up $113.00 of our profits. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The second date a couple of weeks later we did not have a corner booth and overall attendance was down quite a bit. We only sold about $132 that day so it definitely was not worth the 5:00 a.m. wake-up and the six hours on the highway there and back. Plus, I spent $93.00 not counting food and gas! Definitely we didn't come out ahead but it was a fun day. My kids really enjoyed the barn kittens that were roaming around.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>The take-away from this market was: making more sales was fun but there's more to factor into success or failure than sales. </b></div>
<div>
<b><br /></b></div>
<div>
If we lived closer we would do this market again but with the distance and the kids this one will not work.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In August I tried my first "<b>Loonie Night</b>" in Lloydminster. It was $30.00 for a table. Attendees pay for bidding paddles with numbers on them ($3.00 each I think) and they can bid a loonie (Canadian dollar) on items that vendors have up for bid to try to win them. The vendors get all the $1.00 bids for their items hopefully reaching at least their price on the item. The attendees get a chance to win a nice item for a dollar. There are usually three rounds of bidding and between rounds the customers can also shop at the vendor tables. The vendors each get one bidding number for free and they can purchase more numbers if they wish. It's called Loonie Night because bids are a dollar and in Canada our dollar coins are called "Loonies" because they have a loon (water bird) on them.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
While this event was fun I think this is another event better suited to direct sales companies than handmade. The first night I was fortunate that I did make the price of my items with the bids but I felt like it cheapened the value of my items. People were like "oh, I like that! But I only want to pay a dollar for it."</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
At the end of the night a gentleman approached my table and offered to buy a quilt and two pillows from me. He had had quite a few drinks and was very bold and persuasive in getting my price down by 50%! He convinced me that he was donating them to a charity auction and I really hope he was telling the truth. I granted the sale because I really felt I needed to make more money on that event but I basically just got my materials back by discounting 50% and gave my time away for free. That didn't make me feel very happy.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_nbIjFHLyCZU0i-3isXXZQs2mM3yPJwCAsysCiR8eTESisiabRCObDTW8GhrpPXwMFAqWpSRo6mc_A1t6BuswKZzhFrJ2bQkTc4U76Tu8mTWWQqAj2L_F26cEVC55vnke9eXdpqhlS50v/s1600/What+I+Learnedin+a+Year+of+SellingHandmadeat+Craft+Markets.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1102" data-original-width="735" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_nbIjFHLyCZU0i-3isXXZQs2mM3yPJwCAsysCiR8eTESisiabRCObDTW8GhrpPXwMFAqWpSRo6mc_A1t6BuswKZzhFrJ2bQkTc4U76Tu8mTWWQqAj2L_F26cEVC55vnke9eXdpqhlS50v/s640/What+I+Learnedin+a+Year+of+SellingHandmadeat+Craft+Markets.jpg" width="426" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>The takeaway from the Loonie Night: Choose your events carefully. An event that devalues your wares is going to make you unhappy in the end.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Also, getting too desperate to make a sale can cause you to make a bad decision that you will regret.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At first I was feeling like the night was a success because I made over $200.00 but when I really sat and thought about it, say on the hour long highway drive home in the dark, I realized that it wasn't so successful after all.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>The best market of the year</b>, and of my handmade seller's life so far, was the <b>Etsy Made in Canada Pop-Up in Edmonton</b> in September. This event was first class! The organizers did an excellent job promoting the event in the months and weeks leading up to it. They were even on the local news stations on the lunch-hour news! There were promotions to entice people to attend and social media efforts were huge. There were also over 200 vendors who were also sharing on their social media so that helped too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We traveled to Edmonton the night before and stayed at my Mom and Dad's house. They looked after our three kids for us. We booked our dog into a kennel.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were up very early for a 6:00 a.m. load in time. We left the van and the trailer loaded so we could just get up, get showered and get out the door without waking the whole household. The load in, while intimidating, went very well. I was so glad I chose the earliest time slot because I really did need all that time to get set up. Next year we will design a simpler booth!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjQXzxocSWsfMjpwDO-9EIEQSLfio1SJ4Iw_2CSFxA2n3Gq4Tegie-Brm3Nya-kI3OIgBeuo6w2wpO-dI-i-egXX2FVOUmOfkfB9cEv0sxf7Jpu6Ad3GgH5TCF3Hi2H8n_IUM9itBVDnH0/s1600/IMG_1921.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjQXzxocSWsfMjpwDO-9EIEQSLfio1SJ4Iw_2CSFxA2n3Gq4Tegie-Brm3Nya-kI3OIgBeuo6w2wpO-dI-i-egXX2FVOUmOfkfB9cEv0sxf7Jpu6Ad3GgH5TCF3Hi2H8n_IUM9itBVDnH0/s640/IMG_1921.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The booth at the Etsy Pop-Up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were starving by 8:30 and the show started at 9:00 but fortunately there was breakfast available to purchase from the Shaw Conference Centre where the event was held.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first day was a Saturday and it was an amazing day. I sold over $700.00 of items including a quilt. The second day was a Sunday and it was not such a great day with only about $70.00 in sales. I'm not sure why things didn't go so well the second day but everyone who came by my booth seemed to be just looking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For next year I think I will concentrate on making three or four items but making a lot of them. I think I had too much to choose from this year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you factor in $240.00 for the 5' x 10' booth space, fuel, dog kennel, food, parking and a whole weekend of time I'm not sure that $700.00 was successful. If we had had to pay for a hotel and childcare on top of that it would have been a break even situation if we were lucky.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was great to be at a show where people were actually coming for original handmade items and were interested in buying those items. I felt like I was with "my people". The people who "get it" were there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>The takeaway from the Etsy Pop-Up: Being in a larger city at a curated and juried event that was well promoted was a great experience! I recommend giving it a try!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did another Loonie Night in October and again in November (both in Wainwright) with the same feeling that my items were devalued. I won't be doing anymore of those but I had committed to the October and November dates. I was really dragging my feet to the November one. I don't recommend those events for handmade sellers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSAtmD-4jOqaUKPU0yB8cvufoFAdSrpl56aU_FxIlL6btgEhyphenhyphen8MDK17hHPypnsbf4bMxOkdBpPaPQLPVXGm_JHXzbXzroYicCcXpJ1XtWCzdTRp6p9wkAg0dinEqAIJzzN2_fYVFugy4HD/s1600/IMG_2103.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSAtmD-4jOqaUKPU0yB8cvufoFAdSrpl56aU_FxIlL6btgEhyphenhyphen8MDK17hHPypnsbf4bMxOkdBpPaPQLPVXGm_JHXzbXzroYicCcXpJ1XtWCzdTRp6p9wkAg0dinEqAIJzzN2_fYVFugy4HD/s640/IMG_2103.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The booth at the Christmas Expo.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last show of the year was the Christmas Expo in Wainwright. After the Mother's Day fiasco I was very hesitant to sign up for this one but the organizer (same one as the Mother's Day) caught me just after my big exciting show in Edmonton and I handed over my $180.00 for a 10' x 10' booth. It was our year of experimentation after all so we would try this one last show. We also had to buy $20 worth or raffle tickets bringing our total cost to $200.00.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Over two days we made $297.00. This was the best ever total for Wainwright but still not what I would call a success. At least we didn't lose money this time. I did have fun selling but I think two days was too long for a small town like this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>In conclusion:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1. This is hard work! It is an unbelievable amount of work. The sewing alone is daunting and when you add in travel and set up and tear down... it is not for the faint of heart.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2. You are never guaranteed sales and you never know what will happen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3. You still need to try a few shows yourself and see what works for you with the knowledge that you might not make money. You might even lose money.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4. It is fun meeting customers and hearing great feedback on your handmade items (and on your booth design!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
5. It is not fun when people balk at your price and try to whittle you down. Don't stand for it!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
6. There is a considerable amount of money outlaid up front in supplies and booth fees and you are not guaranteed to get that money back.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
7. Small towns are generally not going to be successful for handmade seller in my experience. Go for the big city shows. The conversion rate statistics are so low that you really need a high number of people going through to make enough money.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
8. It is a very good idea to have an online shop where you can list everything that doesn't sell at the show. I didn't ever sell out of everything but my online sales were the best they've ever been this year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, it's been a crazy, exhausting, somewhat expensive and educational year this year of experimentation in 2017. I hope by sharing what I learned that I have helped you in some way. Keep trying. Don't give up! I am going into 2018 with a much clearer idea of what I want to do and knowing what I definitely won't do again. :)</div>

I am writing this evening from beneath this cozy Christmas Quilt that was just finished this afternoon. I started this quilt earlier in this week on a whim and got onto a roll with it so I have a Sunday finish!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxZnaglNBi8PaBLE2EhfdAq4hkNJayiRz-14ZEHwgo-UNeMoLzPqxmBefzPTPy5NHciat8rtSbZp-Lgm46APOQr4FWuI6XpVMpRX8jHOGHvRduHYlXUqnd2MbAiQrfFGEFHK9tvDugr2ou/s1600/IMG_8956.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1355" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxZnaglNBi8PaBLE2EhfdAq4hkNJayiRz-14ZEHwgo-UNeMoLzPqxmBefzPTPy5NHciat8rtSbZp-Lgm46APOQr4FWuI6XpVMpRX8jHOGHvRduHYlXUqnd2MbAiQrfFGEFHK9tvDugr2ou/s640/IMG_8956.JPG" width="542" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This quilt is made using the "<a href="http://www.thimbleblossoms.com/product/vintage-holiday-pattern-147-pdf-pattern" target="_blank">Vintage Holiday</a>" quilt pattern that Camille Roskelley published in 2011. I've had the pattern since it came out and only just now sewed it.<br />
<br />
I have a few quilts on the go including my Classic Swoon quilt. Bonnie and Camille (who's fabrics are featured in the blocks) ran a giveaway along with Moda Fabrics for the month of November on Instagram. To enter the giveaway contestants had to sew blocks using patterns from Bonnie or Camille and also the blocks had to use their fabrics. So I sewed one of my Soon blocks for my Classic Swoon quilt and I also started the Vintage Holiday Quilt to get some more blocks entered before the contest closed on November 30th.<br />
<br />
You can see some of my blocks on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/daydreamsofquilts/" target="_blank">Instagram</a> and I have a few in this post as well.<br />
<br />
This pattern calls for fat quarters but you can easily make the ornaments with scraps which is what I did. Since I wasn't even planning to make this quilt and just started it on a whim to enter the contest so I made it with fabrics I already had on hand in my sewing room.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiIQ2JMhEkdYOKdW5twb-SW_5AnQRCAV2ZiAsYTmmPmh3RDl6A6IYbpoGWfPiZnKm2-EmRRQl_0o0Qf4pTdowqHkh91Ozn9hD1LeLNF31qvU0oHHSaQgb7zaBs9EVx0GNYpn62PJt6aVpQ/s1600/IMG_8959.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1139" data-original-width="1600" height="454" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiIQ2JMhEkdYOKdW5twb-SW_5AnQRCAV2ZiAsYTmmPmh3RDl6A6IYbpoGWfPiZnKm2-EmRRQl_0o0Qf4pTdowqHkh91Ozn9hD1LeLNF31qvU0oHHSaQgb7zaBs9EVx0GNYpn62PJt6aVpQ/s640/IMG_8959.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
These two blocks are a couple of my favourites. The Block above has a red from the "Handmade" line, the solid aqua is from the "Miss Kate" line and the aqua with tiny grey dots is from the "Ruby" line.<br />
<br />
The block below is made with a fussy cut of the large focal print from the "Handmade" line.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN35RY3Fk-k0al20Q7aJ1qSrxKgJSd14bqsO4YBhcOkWn8QeOBZXqIizy1RRA-l0mPTB5Y7aTG66s0hSQdupXNohNZqZCgN7DAdvODndx6u7zDfk_uBfmtJ5GoT9ciPImRTPJoS_dXaGeD/s1600/IMG_8960.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiN35RY3Fk-k0al20Q7aJ1qSrxKgJSd14bqsO4YBhcOkWn8QeOBZXqIizy1RRA-l0mPTB5Y7aTG66s0hSQdupXNohNZqZCgN7DAdvODndx6u7zDfk_uBfmtJ5GoT9ciPImRTPJoS_dXaGeD/s640/IMG_8960.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I quilted the whole quilt from edge to edge with wavy lines.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjrC3-BXxyd7FCBPoQmc3Y1xCiVyRhveqaMhk0_Qid2Ksnlz3kPTMv6_EmO-YUKjVmhkX3MkP_lLV3ukV22KArdo2Yk8ZVo913IaSgvsMYnX0v1mE4JDnaCWgLZ4aTztStTu0UOVr71q4I/s1600/IMG_8961.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1276" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgjrC3-BXxyd7FCBPoQmc3Y1xCiVyRhveqaMhk0_Qid2Ksnlz3kPTMv6_EmO-YUKjVmhkX3MkP_lLV3ukV22KArdo2Yk8ZVo913IaSgvsMYnX0v1mE4JDnaCWgLZ4aTztStTu0UOVr71q4I/s640/IMG_8961.JPG" width="510" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The quilt is backed with a wide back of the red print from the Moda Grunge line by Basic Grey. Horray, no piecing in the backing! :)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio5YKQKquRg4gs-h08PFBXuZ6TaYgcSZX-_Nxf8rRSkvj9odt_O3n71CXBg3M9i_uh8e4qoIsw9bIaaedVIDgpKzSxGtdDykX-ygt0ScT5byoIfRGO8u1tBqT2QLW14Ycra4icKOD4c-zx/s1600/IMG_8958.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1320" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEio5YKQKquRg4gs-h08PFBXuZ6TaYgcSZX-_Nxf8rRSkvj9odt_O3n71CXBg3M9i_uh8e4qoIsw9bIaaedVIDgpKzSxGtdDykX-ygt0ScT5byoIfRGO8u1tBqT2QLW14Ycra4icKOD4c-zx/s640/IMG_8958.JPG" width="528" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now I have another Christmas quilt in my collection and I am very happy with how it turned out. Even if I don't win a prize in the contest I'm glad I decided to enter and ended up with a finished quilt!</div>
