Daylilies and Weeds!

Trying to stay on top of the weeds in the daylily field. Eel grass much has offered an excellent option, aside from the extra mosquitoes it brings.
The daylilies are just now coming into bloom. Lots of anticipation awaiting the new daylily seedlings.

Fields Of Dreams

Thousands of daylily seeds are ready for planting. Hybridizing efforts in 2010 were intense. We made many crosses with choice registered daylilies and selected seedlings. We are just beginning our daylily farm. There are fields of corn on the farm presently which will gradually be replaced with fields of registered daylilies and daylily seedlings. So much to anticipate for future seasons with fields full of beautiful daylilies. We love gardening in Nova Scotia:)!

In 2009 I dug up all of my daylilies from my property in town and moved them to an absolutely beautiful place along the northern coast of Nova Scotia. Amazingly, they have survived the icy cold winter winds off the Northumberland Straight. Those daylilies that I had protected in previous winters were left to fend for themselves, and they didn't let me down. We are looking forward to a glorious summer in the daylily field.

Swing From The Stars, Emily Olson 2002, is a very pretty intense pink daylily that I've crossed with several blue eyed pinks this summer. It put on a lovely display.

This seedling is amazing! I was so surprised to see it's perfect bloom today. It's approx, 36" tall with a large dark, almost black bloom. Impressive ( I'm not biased of course:)).

No matter how many beautiful daylilies I have in my garden, I just can't resist the intense orange of the ditch lily. I love it's height and it's rustic charm. Be careful of it's invasiveness, although mine seem to be well behaved to this point.

Diamond/Gold Dusting

Here is the petal surface of one of my daylily seedlings~ Pure And Simple x Spectral Elegance. It appears to be covered in gold and white sparkles when the sun strikes it's surface. (click picture for a closer view)Flowers that have structures which produce a glitter like quality on the petal surface are referred to as having diamond dusted (white) or gold dusted (gold) qualities.

Take a closer look at a daylily~ You may be pleasantly surprised:).

This is such an exciting time of year in the garden. The daylilies are just starting to bloom. Hybridizing crosses are yet to be determined, and seedlings which have never been seen before are getting ready to show their faces for the first time. The anticipation is intense!

daylily: Ultimate Fantasy

Ultimate Fantasy, hybridized by Abajian 2004, is a large cream colored daylily with a raspberry eye and small raspberry edge. Several years ago I searched for this daylily, and had a bit of difficulty obtaining it. When I finally received it in Sept 2006 it bloomed immediately on what was most likely a rebloom scape. It must have expended too much energy settling in and blooming at the same time, as it did not bloom again last year.It now has a large fat scape, and if all goes well it will be showing it's beautiful face again in the near future.

Metallic Edges

Metallic edges are an interesting characteristic in daylilies~~They give the illusion that the flower is edged in sparkling gold or silver. Take a closer look at yellow or cream edged daylilies to see if they are metallic edged. It's really very striking. Sometimes hard to capture by the camera, here's one daylily from last year, Angelic Messenger, with a sparkling gold edge~~~Click for a closer view.

Eight Miles High

Eight Miles High is a beautiful black red unusual form, with creamy teeth in hot weather. It survived it's first winter in my zone 5 garden, however had a setback and presently consists of one small fan. I have seedlings from last year's pollen, so I'm hoping for more hardy specimens for this area.

Daylilies in my garden are barely putting up scapes, however my new imports are putting on an impressive show, and tiding me over till daylily blooms in July/August.

Daylily-Bird Talk

A large impressive bloom greeted me this morning. When this daylily settles in it should display a fringed edge, which to me looks somewhat feather like. Definitely hybridizing with this one!
