The Queen was Shot at the Trooping Colour (1981)

The Queen has been shot during Horseguards' Parade for the start of the Trooping Colour ceremony on 13 June 1981 in London. This was done by a teenage boy, who was 17 years old, called Marcus Serjeant. He had used a blank cartridge pistol for that.

On that day the Queen had rode past crowd on horseback traditionally. Suddenly Marcus pointed a gun directly at the Queen among the crowd and fired six blank cartridges. Therewith the Queen's horse startled, but she was able to bring it back under control with a few seconds. The monarch looked shaken by the episode, but soon recovered her composure. She comforted her 19 years old horse, Burmese, which she has ridden in birthday parades since 1969.

Meanwhile a guardsmen and police overcame and arrested Marcus, gunman. He had said " I wanted to be famous. I wanted to be a somebody " as he was arrested. When the police investigated his house, they had found his diary. There it was mentioned " I am going to stun and mystify the whole world with nothing more than a gun. I will become the most famous teenager in the world ".

He had also sent a letter to Buckingham Palace which read, " Your Majesty, Don't go to the Trooping the Colour ceremony, because there is an assassin set up to kill you, waiting just outside the palace". The letter arrived on 16 June, three days late.

Marcus was jailed for five years. He wrote to the Queen from prison to apologize but he never received a reply. He was released in October 1984, at the age of 20 and he changed his name and disappeared into history.

Britain's Royal Family is the most famous Royal Family among the survival royal families in the world. A lot of people who are in not only the Britain but also all over the world love and respect to the Queen and the Royal Family. The best example is the last wedding ceremony of Prince William & Princess Katherine. On that day the whole world paid their attention for the city of London. That Royal Wedding confirmed the sustainability of Royal Family for half century years more.

Mean while, there are some people who does not like to the Royal Family in not only the Britain but also all over the world. Because of many reasons, they heat the Royal Family.Most of them believe that the sustaining of the Royal Family by public wealth is unfair. They say that the Queen and the Royal Family are sustained by public wealth with out doing any service for the country. Even they suggest a president instead of the Queen. But the humorous thing is this, the Queen's annual cost is $ 57.8 Million and the American president's annual cost is $ 1.4 Billion as well.

The other point is the British Imperialism as well as the Monarchy is a symbol of the Imperialism. That is why, there are so many protesters against the Queen and the Royal Family. That can be seen in the Commonwealth realms better than Britain. For examples Australia, Canada, New Zealand and so forth.

Apart from that, there are many kinds of protesters against the Royal Family so as to get attention of the world. There have been some incidents like above in the recent history. But attacks on member of the Royal Family are rare events.

The car that Princess Anne, the Princess Royal and her husband Captain Mark Philips was going had been shot on 20 March 1974. The Royal couple had been returning to Buckingham palace from a charity film screening in the city. Accidently, at the Pall Mall when the couple was on their way to the palace, a light coloured car blocked their road. A man who got out from the car fired six shots towards the royal car. There in Princess's private detective Inspector James Beaton fired at once. The Inspector, The chauffer Alex Callender, one of the Queen's senior drivers, Rowena Brassey, the Princess's Lady-in-waiting, and a man passing in a taxi were wounded from this incident. The Princess got shocked but no harm. After few minutes gunman was arrested.

He was Ian Ball, 26 years old.The police found a letter written to the Queen, with him. It said that the Princess Anne was kidnapped and pay 3 million Founds to release the Princess. The Queen and Prince Philip are currently on a state visit Indonesia but have been informed of the attack. After a few days doctors exposed that Ian was a mental upset person.

His godparents were his uncle Prince of Wales, the Rt. Rev’d Geofffrey Tiarks, Captain Hamish Lochore, Lady Cecil Cameron of Lochiel and Jane Holdemess-Roddam.

Prince Henry of Wales was born on 15 September 1984 and he was christened in St. George Chapel in Windsor Castle on 21 December 1984 by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Robert Runcie. He was named as Henry Charles Albert David.

James, Viscount Severn

Viscount Severn son of Prince Edward & countess of Wessex, was born on 17 December 2007 and he was christened in the private chapel of Windsor Castle on 19 April 2008 by the Dean of Windsor, Bishop David Conner. His christening gown was a newly made replica of the gown originally used by his great-great-great-grandaunt, Princess Victoria, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1841. It has been worn for most royal christenings since then and the old gown has now been preserved. He was named as James Alexander Philip Theo Mountbatten-Windsor.

His god parents were Denise Poulton, Jeanye Irwin, Alastair Bruce, Duncan Bullivant and Tom Hill.

Christenings in the royal family have traditionally been private occasions, attended by family, godparents and close friends.

The Royal Christening Robe of Queen Elizabeth I

Most members of the royal family have worn the same ancient christening gown/royal Christening robe made for Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter, princess Victoria since 1841. This gown is made from Fine Honiton lace lined with white satin. It has been preserved up to now.The font used in the royal baptism is that the princess Victoria used.

In 1894 the robe was given by Queen Victoria to the Duchess of York (later Queen Mary), all of whose children were christened in it. In the next generation it was worn by the children of King George VI, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and of Prince George, Duke of Kent.

The children of the Queen and of Princess Margaret were christened in it, and it has subsequently been used for the christenings of all the Queen’s grandchildren and other royal babies, including the grand children of Princess Margaret.

Princess Margaret was christened in the private chapel of Buckingham palace on 30 October 1930 by Cosmo Lang, the Archbishop of Canterbury. She was named as Margaret Rose. But the princess’s mother, the Duchess of York originally wanted the names Ann Margaret, as she explained to the Queen Mary in a later.”I am very anxious to call her Ann Margaret, as I think Ann of York sounds pretty, and Elizabeth and Ann go so well together”. Her majesty the Queen is a living legend. She did an unbelievable service to the country, commonwealth & the world as the Queen during her six decades legacy. She has made thousands of world records, never any one can break. She has got millions of honours from army forces, governments, universities, societies & so on. There is no country or continent she did not visit, in the world.

The Queen could see eleven American presidents, and she has met and shaken hands with these eleven presidents. Someone is killed, someone is resigned and someone lost from the election among these presidents whilst the Queen is in still steadily. She met Mr. Harry Truman as her first American president when she was as the princess to the throne in 1952. However she has never met only one American president called Mr. Lyndon Johnson.

Certainly, she is a living legend & these photographs prove that very well.

Eisenhower is the first American president she met as the Queen. They met three times. In 1957 she visited to America as her first state visit as the Queen & president Eisenhower warmly welcome her. President Eisenhower made a state visit to UK & met the Queen again at Balmoral castle in 1959. So also they met each others again in Canada at the opening ceremony of the St. Lawrence Seaway same year.

3. Mr. John F. Kennedy (1961)

Princess Elizabeth and Philip were married at 11:30 GMT on 20 November 1947 at Westminster Abbey.

On the morning of her wedding, as Princess Elizabeth was getting dressed at Buckingham Palace before leaving for Westminster Abbey, her tiara snapped. Luckily the court jeweller was standing by in case of emergency. The jeweller was rushed to his work room by a police escort. Queen Elizabeth reassured her daughter that it would be fixed in time, and it was. Princess Elizabeth was attended by eight bridesmaids: HRH The Princess Margaret (her younger sister), HRH Princess Alexandra of Kent (her first cousin), Lady Caroline Montagu-Douglas-Scott (daughter of the Duke of Buccleuch), Lady Mary Cambridge (her second cousin), Lady Elizabeth Lambart (daughter of the Earl of Cavan), The Hon. Pamela Mountbatten (Philip's first cousin), The Hon. Margaret Elphinstone (her first cousin) and The Hon. Diana Bowes-Lyon (her first cousin). Her cousins Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent served as page boys.

The royal parties were brought in large carriage processions, the first with The Queen and Princess Margaret and later a procession with Queen Mary. At Kensington Palace, Philip departed with his best man, the Marquess of Milford Haven. Princess Elizabeth arrived at the Abbey with her father, George VI, in the Irish State Coach.

The wedding ceremony was officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher and the Archbishop of York, Cyril Garbett.

Since the day the first images were shown on cinema screens Britain’s royal weddings had become major international events. For almost the sentry these state occasions had been watched all over the world and attracted huge crowd. This is the photo story of Britain’s royal weddings from the Queen mother to present date.

Prince Albert was the second son of King George V and Queen Marry. Lady Elizabeth was the ninth child of the Earl & countess of Strathmore & Kinghorne. Since their childhood they had known each other. Prince Albert began their courtship with Lady Elizabeth who was in age of twenty in 1920. But she rejected it as she did not like to involve with the royal family. She did not want to lose her freedom. Nevertheless, she agreed to marry him on his third request at one of Elizabeth’s family homes in Scotland, in 1923.

Their engagement was announced officially on 15^th of January 1923. There was something special in this marriage that, at the first time a Britain prince married a foreign (Scottish) princess.

Their wedding was held on 26^th of April in 1923 at Westminster Abbey. The bride arrived to the Abbey in a State Landau, with her father from her family’s London home in Mayfair. Before entering the Abbey the bride placed her bouquet at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior. That was a strange custom of the royal family and then the wedding ceremony was started with royal traditions.

After the ceremony the new royal couple made their way in the Glass Coach to Buckingham Palace. They appeared on the balcony of Buckingham palace with their parents. After that the wedding breakfast was held and Lady Elizabeth wore a beautiful ivory colour gown designed by Mrs. Handley Seymour. Prince Albert wore the uniform of the Royal Air Force, with the Orders of the Garter and the Thistle. The Weight of the wedding cake is 365 kg.

They were given a title, what the Duke & Duchess of York, by the King. They received so many gifts including a diamond tiara for the bride from her father. Other gifts included a seventeenth-century English clock and various items of silverware.

The couple was happily married for twenty-nine years, and had unexpectedly become King and Queen in 1936 following the abdication of Edward VIII, Prince Albert’s brother. Prince Albert became George VI, and died in February 1952. He and Elizabeth had two daughters, the current Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother outlived her husband by fifty years.

Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II was born Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary on April 21, 1926 in London, to Prince Albert, Duke of York (later King George VI), and Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. She married Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh in 1947, became queen on February 6, 1952, and was crowned on June 2, 1953. During her reign, she has tried to make the British monarchy more modern and sensitive to the public.

EARLY LIFE

At the time of her birth, no one thought Elizabeth would someday become queen of Great Britain. Her father, Prince Albert, was the second son of King George V and Queen Mary. Elizabeth got to enjoy the first decade of her life with all the privileges of being a royal with the pressures of being the heir apparent.

Her father and mother, also known as the Duke and Duchess of York, divided their time between a home in London and Royal Lodge, the family's home on the grounds of Windsor Great Park. Elizabeth and her younger sister Margaret were educated at home by tutors. Their studies included French, mathematics, history and geography. They also took dancing, singing and art lessons.

In 1936, the course of Elizabeth's life changed with the death of her grandfather, King George V. Her uncle became King Edward VIII, but he only ruled for six months. King Edward was in love with American divorcee Wallis Simpson, and had to choose between her and the crown. In the end, Edward chose Simpson and Elizabeth's father, Prince Albert, became King George VI.

With the outbreak of World War II, Elizabeth and her sister largely stayed out of London, spending much of their time at Winsor Castle. From there, she made one of her famous broadcasts. Over the radio, Elizabeth sought to reassure children who had been evacuated from their homes and families. The 14-year-old princess, showing her calm and firm personality, told them that "in the end, all will be well for God will care for us and give us victory and peace."

Elizabeth soon started taking up other public duties. Appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Grenadier Guards by her father, Elizabeth made her first public appearance inspecting the troops in 1942. She also began to accompany her parents on official visits within Great Britain.

In 1945, Elizabeth joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service to help in the war effort. She trained side-by-side with other British women to be an expert driver and mechanic. While her volunteer work only lasted a few months, it offered Elizabeth a glimpse into a different, non-royal world.

MARRIAGE AND ACCESSION

Elizabeth first met Philip Mountbatten, son of Prince Andrew of Greece, when she was only 13 and was smitten with him from the start. Distant cousins, the pair kept in touch over the years and eventually fell in love. Her father, King George VI, was hesitant about the match. Mountbatten had ties to both the Danish and Greek royal families, but he didn't possess great wealth and was a bit rough in his personality. They made an unusual pair. Elizabeth was quiet and reserved while Philip was boisterous and outspoken.

At the time of their marriage in 1947, Great Britain was still recovering from the ravages of World War II. Elizabeth is said to have collected clothing coupons to get fabric for her gown. The ceremony was held at London's Westminster Abbey on November 20. The couple wasted no time in producing an heir. Son Charles was born the following year and daughter Anne arrived in 1950.

On February 6, 1952, King George VI died, and Elizabeth assumed the responsibilities of the ruling monarch. She and Prince Philip had been in Kenya at the time of her father's death. Her official coronation took place in June 1953 in Westminster Abbey. And for the first time, the ceremony was broadcast on television, allowing people from across the globe witness the pomp and spectacle of the event.

In her new role, Queen Elizabeth II had new political duties. She held weekly meetings with the country's prime minister, starting with Winston Churchill and every leader after him. As head of the Commonwealth, Elizabeth II traveled extensively. She also made visits to other countries as a representative of Britain, including a groundbreaking trip to Germany in 1965. Elizabeth became the first monarch to tour there since World War I.

A ROYAL MOTHER

Elizabeth had two more children—sons Andrew and Edward—in the early 1960s. She worked tirelessly to protect the image of the monarchy and to prepare for its future. In 1969, she officially made Prince Charles her successor by granting him the title of Prince of Wales. Approximately 200 million people tuned in to see the ceremony.

To continue the rule of the Windsor family, Elizabeth pressured Prince Charles to marry. He finally decided to tie the knot in 1981. The wedding of Prince Charles to 19-year-old Diana Spencer drew enormous crowds in the streets of London and millions watched the proceedings on television. Public opinion of the monarchy was especially strong at that time.

The following year, Elizabeth worried about her second son Andrew. Prince Andrew served as a helicopter pilot in the British Royal Navy during the Falklands War of 1982. Britain went to war with Argentina over the Falklands Islands, a clash that lasted for several weeks. While more than 250 British soldiers died in the conflict, Prince Andrew returned home safe and well much to his mother's relief.

THREATS AND SCANDALS

Elizabeth, as queen, has seen the monarchy come under attack during her lifetime. The once-revered institution has weathered a number of storms, including death threats against the royal family. In 1979, Elizabeth suffered a great personal loss when Lord Mountbatten, her husband's uncle, died in a terrorist bombing. Mountbatten and several members of his family were aboard his boat on August 29, off the west coast of Ireland, when the vessel exploded. He and three others, including one of his grandsons, were killed. The IRA (Irish Republican Army), which opposed British rule in Northern Ireland, took responsibility for the attack.

In June 1981, Elizabeth herself had a dangerous encounter. She was riding in the Trooping the Colour, a special military parade to celebrate her official birthday, when a man in the crowd pointed a gun at her. He fired, but, fortunately, the gun was loaded with blanks. Other receiving a good scare, the queen was not hurt in the incident. She had an even closer call the following year when an intruder broke into Buckingham Palace and confronted Elizabeth in her bedroom. When the press got wind of the fact that Philip was nowhere to seen during this incident, they speculated about the state of the royal marriage.

The love lives of her children have caused Elizabeth much heartache as well. The rocky marriage of Prince Charles and Princess Diana made headlines for years before the couple announced plans to divorce in 1992. Prince Andrew's union with Sarah Ferguson ended up in the tabloids as well, with photos of Sarah with another man ran in papers. Her own husband has caused numerous public relations headaches with his seemingly inconsiderate off-the-cuff comments and rumors of possible infidelities.

In 1997, Elizabeth went under intense media scrutiny herself in the wake of Princess Diana's death. Her incredibly popular daughter-in-law, sometimes nicknamed the People's Princess, died in a car crash in Paris on August 31. The queen was her estate Balmoral with Prince Charles and his two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, at the time of the incident. For days, Elizabeth remained silent while the country mourned Diana's passing and she was sharply criticized for her lack of response. Stories circulated that the queen did not want to give Diana a public funeral, which only fueled public sentiment against her. Nearly a week after Diana's death, Elizabeth returned to London and issued a statement on the late princess.

LATER YEARS

After the start of the twenty-first century, Elizabeth experienced two great losses. She said good-bye to both her sister Margaret and her mother in 2002. Margaret died that February after suffering a stroke. Only a few weeks later, Elizabeth's mother, known as the Queen Mother, died at Royal Lodge on March 30 at the age of 101.

Known to be a stickler for ceremony and tradition, Elizabeth has shown some signs of softening her stance. She had objected to the relationship between Prince Charles and Camilla, especially because of the pair had been involved while the prince was married. When the pair married in 2005, Elizabeth and Prince Philip had a reception in their honor at Windsor Castle.

Elizabeth has also emerged as a devoted grandmother to Prince William and Prince Harry. Prince William has said that she offered invaluable support and guidance as he and Catherine Middleton planned their 2011 wedding. That same year, Elizabeth showed that the crown still had symbolic and diplomatic power. She became the first monarch to visit the Republic of Ireland since it gained independence in the 1920s.

Elizabeth has modernized the monarchy as well. She had dropped some of its formalities and made some of sites and treasures more accessible to the public. As Britain and other nations have struggled financially in recent years, she has welcomed the elimination of the Civil List, which was a public funding system of the monarchy that dates back roughly 250 years. The royal family will continue to receive some government support, but the queen will have cut back on spending.

Despite the occasional call to step aside for Prince Charles, Elizabeth has remained steadfastly on the throne. Some of her duties have been passed on to her eldest son, but she still maintains a busy schedule of her own. Elizabeth handles roughly 430 engagements each year and supports more than 600 charitable organizations and programs. The queen celebrated 60 years as monarch in 2012.
