1. World Population Day 2014 Observed Today

i. World Population Day is being observed today, an annual event on 11 July to raise awareness of global population issues.

ii. Established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989, it was inspired by the interest in Five Billion Day on 11 July 1987 – approximately the date when the world's population reached five billion.
iii. This year, the theme is "Investing in Young People."

GLOBAL POPULATION FACTS:
- As of 1 January 2014, the world's population was estimated to be 7,137,661,030, and increases by 2.3 people every second.
- The total number of people who have ever lived has been estimated by the Population Bureau to be around 108 billion.
- The world population is estimated to have reached one billion in 1804, with two, three and four billion in 1927, 1960 and 1974 respectively.

-China, India, USA, Indonesia, Pakistan and Brazil account for half the world's people.

-More than one in three people are Chinese or Indian.

2. Grand old lady of Bollywood Zohra Sehgal passes away at 102

i. Family and friends bid farewell to veteran actress Zohra Sehgal, who was cremated in New Delhi on Friday.

ii. The last rites of the 102-year-old actress, who died yesterday, were performed at the Lodhi Road crematorium by her son Pawan in the presence of her daughter Kiran and grandchildren.
iii. Former Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Shabana Azmi, Javed Akhtar, theatre personality MK Raina and Prasar Bharti CEO Jawahar Sircar were among those who turned up to pay their last respect.
iv. Sehgal had a great innings as an artiste, performer and actor that spanned more than seven decades. She started her career as a dancer with Uday Shankar in 1935. She had appeared in many Bollywood films as a character actor as well as in English language films besides television series and plays.
v. Often called the grand old lady of Bollywood, she last appeared in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's "Saawariya" in 2007. She worked with some of the biggest stars of this era be it Amitabh Bachchan in "Cheeni Kum", Shah Rukh Khan in "Dil Se" or Salman in "Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam".

vi. A Padma Shri awardee, she also received the Padma Vibhshan in 2010.

3. Delhi becomes world's second most populous city

i. Delhi has become the world's second most populous city in 2014 after Tokyo, more than doubling its population since 1990 to 25 million, according to a UN report.

ii. The 2014 revision of the World Urbanisation Prospects launched yesterday said that India is projected to add the highest number of people to its urban population by 2050, ahead of China.
iii. The Indian capital is expected to retain the spot of the world's second most populous city through at least 2030, when its population is expected to rise swiftly to 36 million.
iv. Tokyo topped UN's ranking of the most populous cities in 2014 with 38 million inhabitants and while its population is projected to decline, it will remain the world's largest city in 2030 with 37 million people.
v. Mumbai, which ranks sixth on the list of the world's most populous cities in 2014, is projected to become the fourth largest city in 2030 when its population would grow to 28 million from the current 21 million.
vi. Tokyo and New Delhi were followed by Shanghai with 23 million, and Mexico City, Mumbai and Sao Paulo, each with around 21 million inhabitants in 2014.
vii. The report said that the largest urban growth will take place in India, China and Nigeria between 2014 and 2050, with the three countries accounting for 37 percent of the projected growth of the world's urban population.
viii. By 2050, India is projected to add 404 million urban dwellers, way more than China's projection of 292 million.

4. Germany meets Argentina in WC final in Rio

i. Germany and Argentina will slug it out for the prestigious Football World Cup at Rio de Janeiro on Sunday night.
ii. While three-time champions Germany advanced to the World Cup final after 2002, Argentina booked a final-2 berth for the first time after 1990, when they lost to West Germany, 1-0 in the final. Since then, Germany have never been the World Champions.
iii. Argentina, on the other hand, had last won the World Cup in 1986, the year Diego Maradona led his country to it's second World Cup.
iv. The Netherlands will take on Brazil in the third place match at Brasília tomorrow.

5. US diplomat William Burns meets Prime Minister

i. US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday and delivered US President Barack Obama's invitation for him to visit Washington.

ii. Modi is scheduled to visit US in September for the UN General Assembly. The Prime Minister will also hold summit meeting with Obama to take the India-US relationship forward.
iii. Burns had met Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, yesterday, and discussed the bilateral ties between the two countries.
iv. "As the world two largest democracies and two largest economies, the US and India shares an interest in each other's success. The success in our partnership can contribute enormously to a safer and prosperous world," said Burns after the meeting.
v. "President Barack Obama looks forward to Prime Minister's visit to US in September, which is a very valuable opportunity to renew strategic partnership between our two countries," he said.
vi. "It is a very valuable opportunity to renew the strategic partnership between our two countries. It's an opportunity to renew our mutual determination to spur economic growth," said Burns.
vii. The visiting US official said Modi-led BJP has won a very a strong mandate to invigorate India's development and its rise on the world stage

6. Bhullar becomes first Indian-origin player to join NBA

i. Sim Bhullar has become the first player of Indian origin to be a part of the National Basketball Association (NBA) after he signed a summer contract with the Sacramento Kings, a professional basketball team in the US.

ii. 21-year-old Bhullar, who is 7.5 feet tall and weighs 360 pounds, is a centre from New Mexico State University.
iii. Originally from Canada, Bhullar's parents hail from Punjab. His height is in his genes with his father 6.5 feet tall and his being mother's height 5.10 feet.

iv. Bhullar's younger brother Tanveer, who is 7.2 feet, also plays college basketball at New Mexico State.
v. Bhullar's name was not originally drafted in last month's NBA Draft, and that might deter him from playing for the Kings when the 2014-2015 season begins later this year.

7. Mizoram Governor Vakkom Purushothaman resigns

i. Resenting his transfer from Mizoram "without consulting him", Nagaland Governor Vakkom B Purushothaman on Friday resigned from the post.

ii. The 86-year-old Congress veteran said that he sent his resignation to President Pranab Mukherjee this morning.
iii. Though he did not raise any political or procedural issue in his resignation letter, Purushothaman told reporters that governors had been treated in a manner which was "not fair" after the NDA Government assumed power. "Governors are constitutional authorities. It is grossly improper to transfer them just like any other government official.That is not fair," he said.

8. Amul to sponsor Indian contingent for Commonwealth, Asian Games

i. Amul has inked an agreement with the Indian Olympic Association to sponsor the Indian contingent for the upcoming Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games to be held later this year in South Korea.

ii. R S Sodhi, Managing Director, Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), said that the company is leveraging on the synergies of milk and sports through this partnership.

iii. Amul, which has recently started its 'Eat Milk with Every Meal' campaign, had also sponsored the Indian contingent for the London Olympics in 2012 and has been investing in football, cricket and Formula 1 in the past.

9. World Bank to give $153 mn loan for Odisha project

i. India has inked a loan agreement with World Bank for an assistance of $153 million (about Rs 920 crore) for the Odisha Disaster Recovery Project.

ii. “The Loan Agreements for World Bank (International Development Association (IDA) assistance of $153 million for Odisha Disaster Recovery Project were signed here on Friday between the Government of India and the World Bank,” an official statement said.

iii. The objective of the project is to restore and improve housing and public services in targeted communities of Odisha, and increase the capacity of the state entities to respond promptly and effectively to an eligible crisis of emergency, the statement said.

आफरीदी ने किया एक और कीर्तिमान अपने नाम

शाहिद आफरीदी दोबारा पाक टीम में शामिल होने के मिले मौके को गंवाना नहीं चाहते इसीलिए वह ताबड़तोड़ एक के बाद एक रिकॉर्ड अपने नाम करते जा रहे हैं।

हरफनमौला क्रिकेटर आफरीदी को एक धाकड़ बल्‍लेबाज के रूप में जाना जाता है। वह गेंदबाजी में भी कमाल करने में माहिर हैं। इस साल दो बार उन्हें पाक टीम में शामिल नहीं किया गया तो उनकी टीम को करारी हार का सामना करना पड़ा।

दक्षिण अफ्रीका दौरा और इंग्लैंड में हुए चैंपियंस ट्रॉफी में टीम की असफलता को देखते हुए पा‌‌क टीम के चयनकर्ताओं ने आफरीदी को मौका देना का फैसला लिया तो उन्होंने इसका जमकर फायदा उठाया।

वेस्ट इंडीज के खिलाफ वनडे सीरीज में उन्होंने वनडे इतिहास की दूसरी सर्वश्रेष्ठ गेंदबाजी करने के अलावा बल्‍ले से भी कमाल दिखाया। साथ ही वह वनडे क्रिकेट से सबसे बड़े हरफनमौला क्रिकेटर भी बन गए। साथ ही वह साढ़े तीन सौ विकेट और सात हजार से ज्यादा रन बनाने वाले दुनिया के एकमात्र क्रिकेटर हो गए हैं।

विंडीज के खिलाफ पहले ट्वंटी-20 मैच में भी उन्होंने दो छक्का लगाते हुए एक और कीर्तिमान अपने नाम कर लिया।

आफरीदी ने इस मैच में दो छक्के लगाए। पहला छक्का उन्होंने क्रीज पर आते ही लगाया। इस छक्के के साथ ही अंतरराष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट में उनके नाम कुल 399 छक्के हो गए थे।

इसके बाद उन्होंने 16वें ओवर में सुनील नारायन की गेंद पर लांग आन पर छक्का जड़कर एक और दुर्लभ रिकॉर्ड अपने नाम कर लिया।

वह टेस्ट, वनडे और टी-20 तीनों में मिलाकर सर्वाधिक 400 छक्का जड़ने वाले दुनिया के एकमात्र क्रिकेटर बन गए। आफरीदी ने 446 अंतरराष्ट्रीय मैच खेले हैं जिनमें 437 पारियों में उनके नाम 400 छक्के हैं।

जबकि छक्के लगाने में माहिर और उनके कट्टर प्रतिद्वंद्वी विंडीज के क्रिस गेल इस मामले में दूसरे पायदान पर हैं। गेल ने 384 अंतरराष्ट्रीय मैच खेले हैं और 451 पारियों में 353 छक्के जमाए हैं।

भारत की ओर से इस मामले में सचिन तेंदुलकर सबसे आगे हैं और ओवरऑल लिस्‍ट में पांचवें क्रम पर हैं। उन्होंने 662 मैचों में खेली गई 780 पारियों में 264 छक्के लगाए हैं।

आफरीदी ने इस मैच में 27 गेंदों में 46 रनों की आतिशी पारी खेली जिसके दम पर पाक टीम ने विंडीज को दो विकेट से हरा दिया। शानदार प्रदर्शन के लिए अफरीदी को मैन ऑफ द मैच का पुरस्कार दिया गया।

1. UN Declared 19 November as World Toilet Day

i. In a bid to make sanitation for all a global development priority, the United Nations General Assembly designated 19 November as World Toilet Day, urging changes in both behaviour and policy on issues ranging from enhancing water management to ending open-air defecation.

ii. Adopting a new resolution, the Assembly urged UN Member States and relevant stakeholders to encourage behavioural change and the implementation of policies to increase access to sanitation among the poor, along with a call to end the practice of open-air defecation, which it deemed “extremely harmful” to public health.

iii. Of the world’s 7 billion people, six billion have mobile phones. However, only 4.5 billion have access to toilets or latrines – meaning that 2.5 billion people, mostly in rural areas, do not have proper sanitation. In addition, 1.1 billion people still defecate in the open.

iv. World Toilet Day has previously been marked by international and civil society organizations all over the world. However, it was not formally recognized as an official UN day until today.

2. Rampur first in N-India to get ATM facility in co-op banks

i. Rampur today become the first city of North India where ATM facility will be available for people maintaining accounts in co-operative banks.

ii. UP Minister and local MLA Mohammad Azam Khan inaugurated five co-operative bank ATMs in the city today.

iii. The minister said lakhs of account-holders in co-operative banks will now be able to withdraw money round-the-clock.

iv. Mohammad Anjum Khan, Secretary-cum-CEO of the District Co-operative Bank, said Rampur has now become the first city of North India where co-operative bank account holders can also avail ATM facility.

3. Delhi Government to launch Food Security Scheme

i. Delhi government is all set to launch food security programme from 20 August 2013. Delhi will be the first state in India to launch Union government’s food security programme.

ii. The state government has completed all preparations in this regard.

iii. Over 32 lakh identified families will start getting benefit under the scheme from the 1 September 2013.In the first phase, BPL and APL families, Jhugi Jhopadi ration card holders and those under Antodaya ration yojana will be covered.

iv. Rickshaw pullers, porters and rag-pickers would also be included in the scheme to make Delhi hunger free.

4. TIFR scientist Professor Obaid Siddiqi dies

i. National Research Professor at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) Obaid Siddiqi, died in a Bangalore hospital

ii. He was 81. Siddiqi, met with a road accident which caused him severe brain injuries.

iii. Siddiqi was honoured with several awards, including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, BC Roy Award for Biomedical Research and Firodia Award for Basic Sciences.

iv. He was born in 1932 in Uttar Pradesh and was educated at Aligarh Muslim University and the University of Glasgow.

v. He carried out post doctoral research at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, University of Pennsylvania, and the MRC Laboratory in Cambridge.

5. Singapore FM Shanmugam to visit India

i. Foreign Minister K Shanmugam will embark on a three-day trip to India tomorrow to meet the top leadership and visit the Nalanda University archaeological complex in Bihar.

ii. Shanmugam, also the Law Minister, will visit New Delhi and Bihar during July 28-30, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said today.

iii. Shanmugam will also deliver the inaugural speech of the newly-launched ASEAN-India Centre on "ASEAN and India - The Challenge Ahead" on July 30.

6. Vince Girdhari Chhabria is District Judge in USA

i. US President Barack Obama has nominated an Indian-American legal luminary, Vince Girdhari Chhabria to a key judiciary post in California.

ii. The next step is a confirmation hearing in front of the Senate judiciary committee.

iii. Chhabria, nominated to be US District Judge for the Northern District of California, is currently Deputy City Attorney for Government Litigation and as the Co-Chief of Appellate Litigation at the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, where he has worked since 2005.

7. T.S. Narasimhan, producer of Malgudi Days passed away

i. Noted producer T.S. Narasimhan, who filled life to the fictional Malgudi created by novelist R.K. Narayan through “Malgudi Days”, directed by Shankar Nag, died here on Saturday. He was ailing for some time. He was 86 and is survived by three children.

ii. Besides producing Malgudi Days, Narasimhan produced few children’s films and feature films and was also instrumental in taking Kannada film to national and international level.

iii. Narasimhan who worked for some time in Department of Telecommunication left and entered the film industry.

iv. He produced Kesarina Kamala, directed by R.N. Jayagopal, which delineates on the plight of a sex worker back in 1973.

v. Shrungar Nagaraj (producer of Pushpaka Vimana, who died recently) was in the lead role along with Kalpana in the film.

NOTE: i. R.K. Narayan’s illustrated brother R.K. Lakshman sketched the characters for titles.

ii. Thirty-nine episodes of Malgudi Days were telecast on Doordarshan. Subsequently, it was re-telecast on Doordarshan and various entertainment channels. This television series was shot entirely near Agumbe in Shimoga District.

8. India, Zimbabwe to play third ODI in Harare tomorrow

i. India will meet Zimbabwe in the third one-day international of the 5-match cricket series at Harare on Sunday.

ii. The match will be played at 12:30 PM (Indian Time). India is currently leading the series, 2-0.

iii. They had defeated the hosts by 6 wickets in the first ODI on Wednesday, followed by a victory in the second one-dayer by 58 runs on Friday. Both the matches were played at Harare.

iv. The last two matches of the series will be played on the 1st and 3rd of August at Bulawayo.

9. IBL announces STAR Sports channels as host broadcaster

i. The Indian Badminton League today announced STAR Sports channels as the host broadcaster for the upcoming League, scheduled to be held from August 14 to 31.

ii. All the 90 matches, including 75 league matches, 10 games in the semi-finals and five ties in the final will be shown live on STAR Sports 2 and ESPN channels.

iii. The $ 1 million IBL features six franchisee-based city teams in the inaugural edition of the richest prize-money badminton tournament.

iv. The teams are — Mumbai Masters, Delhi Smashers, Awadhe Warriors, Hyderabad Hotshots, Banga Beats and Pune Pistons.

10. India take on Australia in Women's Junior Hockey World Cup

i. India will clash with Australia in their opening Group match of the Women's Junior Hockey World Cup in Monchengladbach, Germany today.

ii. The 18-member Indian team is being led by defender Sushila Chanu.

iii. Indian team will start the match, at the Warsteiner Hockey Park, as underdogs, and have to dish out something extra-ordinary to upset the mighty Aussies.

iv. India are placed in Pool-C along side New Zealand, Australia and Russia in the 16-team tournament.

अमेरिका की यात्रा पर आए वायुसेना प्रमुख एनएके ब्राउन ने कहा है कि बोइंग सी 17 ग्लोब मास्टर सैन्य परिवहन विमान भारतीय वायुसेना के आधुनिकीकरण अभियान का एक महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा है।ब्राउन ने कल कैलिफोर्निया के लांग बीच में बोइंग कंपनी से दूसरा सी 17 विमान हासिल करने के बाद कहा कि हमारे पहले सी 17 ग्लोब मास्टर तृतीय ने न सिर्फ हमारी सामरिक परिवहन क्षमता को जबर्दस्त रूप से मजूबत किया है, बल्कि यह भारतीय वायुसेना के आधुनिकीकरण अभियान का एक बड़ा हिस्सा है।

अमेरिका की बोइंग कंपनी से खरीदे जा रहे दस सी 17 विमानों में से पहले विमान को एक महीने पहले भारतीय वायु सेना में शामिल किया गया था। बोइंग इस साल तीन और सी 17 विमान प्रदान करेगी तथा शेष पांच विमान 2014 में उपलब्ध कराए जाएंगे। बोइंग से सभी दस सी 17 विमान अनुमानित तौर पर 4.1 अरब अमेरिकी डॉलर में खरीदे जा रहे हैं।

सी 17 विमान प्रतिकूल मौसम में भी परिचालित हो सकते हैं। ये काफी दूर तक बड़ी मात्रा में भार लादकर ले जा सकते हैं और छोटे तथा सामान्य रनवे पर भी उतर सकते हैं। ये पुराने हो चुके रूस निर्मित मालवाहक विमानों के बेड़े की जगह लेंगे।

जीपीए के जरिए रजिस्ट्री आज से शुरू

प्रधान सचिव व मंडलायुक्त धर्मपाल द्वारा सोमवार को जारी आदेश में कहा गया है कि कोइ भी व्यक्ति अब जीपीए के आधार पर मकान, दुकान या अन्य सम्पत्ति की खरीद-फरोख्त कर सकता है। नए प्रावधानों में स्पष्ट किया गया है कि जीपीए पक्की रजिस्ट्री का आधार नहीं होगा। दरअसल जीपीए और सेल एग्रीमेंट के रजिस्ट्रेशन पर रोक लगने से हजारों प्रॉपर्टी पर रोक लग गई थी।

इसके चलते अक्तूबर 2011 से अप्रैल 2012 के बीच जिन लोगों ने संपत्ति खरीदी या बेची, वे उसे फ्री होल्ड नहीं करा पाए। बहरहाल नई व्यवस्था शुरू होने से एक बड़ा फायदा यह होगा कि कोई भी व्यक्ति अपने किसी जानकार, परिवार के सदस्य या किसी विश्वसनीय के नाम जीपीए कर सकता है। इसे लागू करने के लिए उपराज्यपाल नजीब जंग ने शनिवार को ही मंजूरी प्रदान कर दी थी। इसके बाद मुख्यमंत्री ने इसके लागू करने के आदेश दिए।

कासिनी ने ली पृथ्वी की दुर्लभ तस्वीरें

अमेरिका की अंतरिक्ष एजेंसी नासा द्वारा शनि ग्रह के अनसुलझे रहस्यों को सुलझाने के लिए छोड़े गए कासिनी अंतरिक्ष यान ने डेढ़ अरब किलोमीटर दूर से पृथ्वी की तस्वीरें ली हैं। यह पहला मौका है जब किसी यान ने अपने पीछे की ओर से पृथ्वी की तस्वीर खींची है।

नासा की ओर से कासिनी द्वारा ली गयी इन दुर्लभ तस्वीरों में पृथ्‍वी एक छोटे से पीले बिंदु के समान नजर आ रही है। कासिनी द्वारा पिछले कैमरों की मदद से ली गयी पृथ्वी की इन तस्वीरों में शनि के बडे छल्लों के बीच में आ जाने से धरती अंतरिक्ष से ली गयी किसी भी दूसरी तस्वीर से बेहद अलग वह मात्र के एक बिंदु के रूप में नजर आ रही है।

कश्मीर के वित्तमंत्री रहीम बने जीएसटी समिति के चेयरमैन

जम्मू—कश्मीर के वित्त मंत्री अब्दुल रहीम राठर को जीएसटी पर राज्यों के वित्त मंत्रियों की अधिकार प्राप्त समिति का नया अध्यक्ष चुना गया है। नेशनल कान्फ्रेंस के वरिष्ठ नेता, राठर को सोमवार को यहां राज्यों के वित्त मंत्रियों की एक बैठक में समिति का प्रमुख चुना गया।

एमसीए ने बदले चुनावी नियम, शेट्टी नहीं लड़ सकेंगे चुनाव

मुंबई क्रिकेट संघ ने आगामी चुनाव लड़ने के लिए अपने योग्यता नियमों में बदलाव किया है जिसे सीनियर प्रशासक प्रोफेसर रत्नाकर शेट्टी को प्रबंध समिति में अपनी जगह बरकरार रखने से रोकने की कवायद माना जा रहा है।

एमसीए की प्रबंध समिति ने सोमवार रात हुई बैठक में फैसला लिया कि बीसीसीआई का वेतन भोगी कर्मचारी कोई भी व्यक्ति चुनाव नहीं लड़ सकेगा। इसमें राष्ट्रीय क्रिकेट अकैडमी के कर्मचारी, कोच और विभिन्न आईपीएल टीमों के कर्मचारी शामिल हैं।

Main Points of Food Security Bill 2013

1. The food security bill approved is directed towards giving the right to food to around 67 per cent of India's 120-crore population (including 75% rural and 50% urban).

2. While families in the poorest of the poor will continue to get 35 kg of grains per month.

3. Rice will be made available at 3 Rupees per Kg.

4. Wheat will cost 2 rupees a kg and cereal will be sold for 1 Rupees per kg.

5. The Food Security programme will be the biggest in the world with the government spending estimated at Rs. 1,25,000 crore annually on supply of about 62 million tonnes of rice, wheat and coarse cereals to 67 per cent of the population.

6. About 2.43 crore poorest of the poor families covered under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) scheme under PDS (Public Distribution System) would continue to get 35 kg of food grains per family per month but with legal entitlement.

7. In Union Budget 2013-14, Rs 10,000 crore set aside for incremental cost for National Food Security Bill.

8. The scheme will be linked to the Aadhar scheme which provides every citizen with a unique identification number that's linked to a database that includes the biometrics of all card-holders.

1. The government has allowed Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), to pass orders like
search and seizure, attachment of properties, arrest and detention of defaulters. The agency now can
pass order to recover the wrongful gains made in contravention of laws. The government has also allowed Sebi to seek information from other regulators within India and abroad with retrospective effect. It will pave way for collection of details pertaining to cases pending for over 15 years now.

Basel Committee on Banking Supervision:

i. The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision is an institution of Governors of the Central Banks of “G-10” nations and was formed in 1974.

ii. The Committee is a forum for discussion on the handling of specific supervisory problems.

iii. It coordinates the sharing of supervisory responsibilities among national authorities in respect of banks' foreign establishments with the aim of ensuring effective supervision of banks' activities worldwide.

iv. The committee operates from Basel in Switzerland.

Basel III Guidelines:are based upon 3 very important aspects which are called 3 pillars of the BASEL II.

These III pillars are:

2. Supervisory Review Process

3. Market Discipline

Important Points:

1. In accordance with Basel III norms, Indian banks will have to maintain their capital adequacy ratio at 9 per cent as against the minimum recommended requirement of 8 per cent.

2. Under Basel III accord, banks have to maintain Tier-one capital (equity and reserves) at 7 per cent of risk weighted assets (RWA) and a capital conservation bugger of 2.5 per cent of RWA.

3. According to the recent RBI financial stability report, Indian banks will require an additional capital of Rs.5 trillion (5lakh crore) to comply with Basel III norms, including Rs 3.25 trillion (Rs 3.25 lakh crore) as non-equity capital and Rs 1.75 trillion(Rs 1.75 lakh crore) in the form of equity capital over the next five years.

4. To ensure that PSU Banks meet the Basel III regulations regarding capital adequacy, the government will infuse Rs 14,000 crore in public sector banks in next fiscal (2013-14). The Basel III capital ratios will be fully phased in as on March 31, 2018.

RBI hikes short term interest rates to support rupee

i.The Reserve Bank of India hiked short term rates in the first strong measure to support the Indian rupee.

ii. These measures, aimed to curb the rupee's decline by tightening liquidity, came after Governor D Subbarao met Finance Minister P Chidambaram yesterday.

Here's what the central bank has done

i. The RBI has increased banks' cost of borrowing short term money through the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and Bank Rate each by 200 basis points (2 per cent) to 10.25 per cent.

ii. The measure will make it unattractive for banks to borrow rupee (at cheap rates) and buy dollars (in the forward markets). This will reduce the pressure on the rupee.

iii. The RBI has capped the amount banks can borrow from overnight markets to Rs. 75,000 crore. This is aimed to suck liquidity from the system. This will prevent banks from taking speculative position in forward markets (will support the rupee).

iv. The RBI will conduct Open Market Sales of bonds of Rs. 12,000 crore on Thursday to further suck out liquidity from the system. Bond prices will fall and yields will rise. Higher yields will attract foreign investors in the debt market.

v. The RBI does not set a target for the rupee, which hit a record low of 61.21 to the dollar last week, but it does take measures to manage volatility.

vi. However, the latest measures will weigh on long term interest rates.

vii. That's because banks may hike deposit rates to attract cheap funds, but the step will lead to higher interest rates driving up home and auto loan rates.

viii. Economist say liberalizing FDI rules will help attract foreign investment into the country, which is badly needed at a time when the rupee is the worst performing currency in Asia.

ix. A weak rupee also poses political challenges for the government, seeking to win a third straight mandate early next year.

2. 100 percent FDI in Telecom Sector

i. The Union Government of India on 16 July 2013 raised the FDI limit in Telecom Sector from 74 percent to 100 percent. ii. Government also cleared that the FDI in the Insurance and Telecom sectors will be up to 49 per cent through automatic route.

iii. The Union Government also mentioned that FDI the single brand retail would be up to 49 percent through automatic route and remaining investments would be directed through Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) route.

iv. FDI in asset reconstruction companies will be up to 49 per cent through automatic route.

v. FDI in Credit Information Companies has been raised to 74 per cent from 49 per cent.

vi. The Government also confirmed that the FDI in Defence Production will continue to be 26 percent.

vii. However, it will be directed through FIPB route for state of art technologies, and investment beyond that will go to Cabinet Committee on Security.

3. RBI opens special liquidity window for mutual funds

i. The Reserve Bank opened a special borrowing window of Rs 25,000 crore to help the crisis-ridden mutual funds tide over liquidity problems.

ii. RBI has decided to conduct a special 3-day repo auction under which banks would be encouraged to raise funds totaling Rs 25,000 crore at 10.25 per cent for on lending to the mutual funds.

iii. The mutual fund industry has been facing consistent equity folio closures in the past few months mainly due to profit booking and various merger schemes in the industry.

iv. The mutual fund industry lost more than 36 lakh investors in 2012-13

v. According to latest SEBI data, mutual funds lost 10 lakh investors, measured in terms of individual accounts or folios, in April-June 2013-14. The total investor accounts with 44 fund houses, fell to around 4.18 crore at the end of June 2013, from 4.28 crore in the last fiscal (2012-13).

vi. "This facility will be made available for a temporary period until further notice," RBI said in a notification.

4. SC refused to reduce the Age of Juvenile from 18 to 16 Years

i. The Supreme Court of India on 17 July 2013 refused to reduce the age of juvenile from 18 to 16 years and dismissed a plea that minors involved in heinous crimes should not be protected under the law.

ii. A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir ruled that interference in the Juvenile Justice Act is not necessary and dismissed a batch of PILs which were filed in the aftermath of the 16 December 2012 brutal gang-rape and murder case in which a minor was also allegedly involved.

iii. In the wake of the huge hue and cry over the alleged involvement of the minor in the 16 December 2012 case, a batch of PILs was filed in the apex court pleading that the Act should be amended and a minor, involved in heinous crimes, should not be protected under the law.

iv. The plea in the apex court was opposed by various child activists, including former Chairman of the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights Amod Kanth.

NOTE: On 16 December 2012, a 23-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped and assaulted in a moving bus allegedly by six persons, one of whom is a minor and is facing proceedings before a Juvenile Justice Board which is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on 25 July 2013.

5. Special UN meet to honour Mandela on 95th birthday

i. A special meeting of the UN General Assembly will mark the Nelson Mandela International Day on 18th July

ii. Honouring the ailing South African anti-apartheid leader's contributions to democracy, racial justice and reconciliation.

iii. Speakers at the meeting to be held on Mandela's 95th birthday are expected to include former US President Bill Clinton, Reverend Jesse Jackson, singer, actor and social activist Harry Belafonte, and Andrew Mlangeni, who was imprisoned with Mandela and remains a close friend.

iv. The General Assembly meeting starting at 10 a.m. on 18th July is part of a series of events to take place in the UN and around the world.

v. "This year's commemoration comes at a sensitive time for President Mandela and his family," said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message for the day.

NOTE: Every year on 18th July, individuals around the world are encouraged to devote 67 minutes to helping others by volunteering in a hospital, tutoring a child, providing food for the homeless, or any other community service.

6. ICT awards death sentence to Mujaheed for war crimes

i. The second International Crimes Tribunal today sentenced war crime indicted Ali Mohammed Mujaheed, General Secretary of Jamaat e Islami to death.

ii. Mujaheed who was a leader of Jamaat's student wing Islammi Chattra Sangha in 1971 was indicted of 7 war crimes including murder, genocide and conspiracy to kill intellectuals during the Bangladesh War for Liberation.

iii. The tribunal found him guilty of crimes against humanity including murder, genocide and conspiracy to kill intellectuals during the 1971 Liberation War.

About Ali Ahsan Mohammed Mojaheed:

i. Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed is a Bangladeshi politician and presently the Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami.

ii. He was accused of helping to form the militant groups Al-Badr (the moon) and the Al-Shams (the sun) and committing crimes against humanity during the Bangladesh Liberation War.

iii. He is currently held prisoner and standing trial at the International Crimes Tribunal of Bangladesh.

iv. He was Minister of Social Welfare from 2001 to 2007 in the four-party alliance Bangladesh government.

About ICT:

The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is a war crimes tribunal in Bangladesh established in 2009 to investigate and prosecute suspects for the genocide committed in 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War by the Pakistan Army and their local collaborators, Razakars, Al-Badr and Al-Shams.

7. HAUSLA Scheme launch for Family Health Campaign in U.P

i. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav, launched a state-wide campaign to improve family health across 75 districts of the state.

HAUSLA (meaning “spirit” or “determination”), the campaign’s twin goals include galvanizing state health systems to deliver high-quality, accessiblehealth programs and services, while also increasing awareness and utilization of services by families and communities across the state’s 75 districts.

उत्तर प्रदेश में बेसिक शिक्षा परिषद के उच्च प्राइमरी स्कूलों में विज्ञान व गणित के 29,333 पदों पर सहायक अध्यापक रखने की मंजूरी बेसिक शिक्षा मंत्री रामगोविंद चौधरी ने दे दी है।

इस संबंध में बृहस्पतिवार को शासनादेश जारी करने की तैयारी है। भर्ती प्रक्रिया 1 अगस्त से शुरू कर 31 अगस्त तक पूरी की जाएगी। यूपी में पहली बार उच्च प्राइमरी स्कूलों में शिक्षकों की सीधी भर्ती होगी।

इसके लिए विज्ञान व गणित से स्नातक के साथ टीईटी पास बीटीसी प्रशिक्षित और बीएड डिग्रीधारी पात्र होंगे। भर्ती मेरिट के आधार पर की जाएगी। चयनितों को सहायक अध्यापक के पद पर रखा जाएगा। भर्ती के लिए ऑनलाइन आवेदन लिए जाएंगे।

किसी भी जिले में आवेदन की छूट होगी। सर्वाधिक पद सीतापुर, लखीमपुर, कुशीनगर, गोंडा, बहराइच, हरदोई, शाहजहांपुर, गाजीपुर, मिर्जापुर, सिद्धार्थनगर, आजमगढ़ आदि जिलों में होंगे।

प्रदेश में बेसिक शिक्षा परिषद के करीब 46,000 उच्च प्राथमिक स्कूल हैं। इन स्कूलों में अभी तक सभी पद पदोन्नति से भरे जाते रहे हैं।

प्रचलित व्यवस्था के मुताबिक प्राइमरी स्कूलों के प्रधानाध्यापक को उच्च प्राइमरी स्कूलों में सहायक अध्यापक के पद पर तैनाती दी जाती रही है।

उच्च प्राइमरी स्कूलों में विज्ञान और गणित विषयों के शिक्षकों की काफी कमी है। इसे देखते हुए उत्तर प्रदेश बेसिक शिक्षा, अध्यापक सेवा नियमावली 1981 में संशोधन करके उच्च प्राइमरी स्कूलों में विज्ञान व गणित शिक्षकों के 50 प्रतिशत पद सीधी भर्ती से भरने का फैसला किया गया।

इन स्कूलों में विज्ञान व गणित शिक्षक के 58,666 पद रिक्त हैं। इसलिए 50 फीसदी पदों को पदोन्नति से और 50 फीसदी पदों को सीधी भर्ती से भरा जाएगा।

6. Tata Sons, India’s biggest business group, and firms controlled by billionaires Anil Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla are among the 26 companies that have applied for a licence to open banks.

In a landmark journey into a new era of space application, India successfully launched its first dedicated navigation satellite using the PSLV which blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.The country’s workhorse Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) blasted off at 11.41 PM on Monday night and it ejected IRNSS-1A satellite and placed it in orbit a little past midnight, technically on Tuesday.

9. Archaeologists have unearthed the oldest example of the use of grave flowers in a nearly 14,000-year-old burial pit in a cave in Israel. The ancient burial pit contained impressions from stems and flowers of aromatic plants such as mint and sage, researchers found.
