Hi all! Here is my first project for the Faber-Castell Design Memory Works guest design team. I am super in love with making something from nothing, and this has been a puuuurty fun something to make!! I’ve gotta say, when I first started painting, I was so scared that I might mess up, as if there was even such a thing, and now I see that part of the reason I love this so much is that you CAN’T mess up. No matter what, you always end up with something fantastic, because it comes from your heart. So here is my Two Hearts canvas.

Cover your canvas with sewing patterns, using a gloss gel medium such as Decoupage or Mod Podge. Wrinkles will form and that is a good thing! It adds lots of texture later on.

Use a palette knife to spread acrylic paint over stencils to add some great texture to your canvas. Dry with a heat tool to speed up the process.

Smooth a metallic gelato over certain areas of the canvas, using no water. The wrinkles in the pattern will catch the color nicely. Let it sit for a few minutes and then add some acrylic paint and paper ephemera.

Squeeze some acrylic paint onto a rubber scraper and scrape onto the canvas to get some great smearing effects. Coat with another layer of glossy gel medium.

Spread another coat of gelato over the canvas.

Use a few different colors of the Stamper’s Big Brush Pen to create lots of depth on your canvas. Be sure to rub in with your finger to get the best results. It is going to pick up the texture from your brush strokes and just generally make everything look super yummy.

Drip some white acrylic paint from about 12 inches above your canvas to get a splatter look on your canvas, add some poetic words, and just keep blending! I used a black pearl pen to add some dimension over the hearts that I shaded with my Stamper’s Big Brush Pens. {LOVE}

Apply rub-ons and use Thickers to spell out a title and cover with glossy gel medium. Allow to dry and outline with Silver Metallic Pitt Artist Pen and Black Pitt Artist Pen.

I love how you can see through all the layers to the pattern tissue. There’s just so much depth and warmth when you are able to layer mediums and still retain their original colors. I don’t know when dirty, yucky, and old-looking became gorgeous again, but I am in love!!

Mini Fold Book

Grab a warm cup of hot cocoa and some cookies and get cozy... I've got a whopping fun post for you today! I've been working on this project all week... working out all the kinks. :) Almost everything I'm using today is by Papertrey Ink.
I've always been a fan of mini books... little ones specifically. I enjoy carrying them in my purse and being able to pop one out anytime. As I was pondering Christmas presents for friends and teachers I thought about how neat it would be to have a mini book calender, so I tried it out! I created a fun and easy fold book with it's own unique binding to keep everything protected too. It's SO versatile ... I've even started a family photo book for myself to keep with me as I am out and about. Here are the two together. (Click on any photo to view a larger, more detailed photo.)

This little Mini Fold book was inspired by some children's books that I have that open and fold out. I adjusted the idea a little but it can easily be created to have the layers open in one continuous stream too.
Here's how to make it:
First you will need to score your cardstock (8.5 x 11) at 3, 6 and 9 inches with the cardstock horizontally positioned in the scorring tool.

Next, trim the cardstock, cutting down over the score lines, at 2 3/4". You will get three strips from 1 piece of cardstock. Repeat this if you want to add more pages. I think I used 4 strips for the calender.

Adhering the pages is actually very easy to do. First, fold your score lines alternately. There will be one end that is shorter than the rest. (marked with the red arrows). the first short end will be adhered behind the regular end (marked with blue arrow.) on the next strip.(tip: I shaved off a really tiny bit from the regular end to account for the fold so that the pages would be the same width when finished.) I used Zip Dry for this project because I like the firm hold I get from it.

When you are finished adhering the strips together, snip off the shot end that is left over as well as a full 3 inch portion if needed, depending on how many strips you use. I'll point out below what the ends should look like when you adhere it to the cover. but think about the fact that you want everything to look like a page on the inside and that will help orient you.
Now, on to the cover...
Score a strip of 2 3/4" x 11" cardstock at 3" and 3 1/2".
Fold at the at 3 1/2" line and inch the cardstock down on the scoring tool. Score again on the next 3" and 3 1/2", like shown below.
Then score the last end section in half. (that will be adhered to itself to create a strong front flap.)
Here is what your cover will look like when it's all scored.
You can see how the doubled over flap has had it's corners rounded here. Each page has the hand stamped calendar page (scroll down to find them on that link page) as well as a different background stamped in black ink. I love having these pre-printed calender pages available! Simple and classic what the decorative style since I will be giving as a gift. This allows them to make it more their own when they add their little notes and stuff.

Take a close look at this next photo. The first and last pages are adhered to the inside, left portion of the cover while the flap comes on the right side. Because I used the same width they come together seamlessly. There is a little gap that happens with the middle pages but it works. If that bothers you you can add some adhesive tape to the binding. (Another option if to not adhere to last panel to the cover then it will just pull out accordion style.

Here is the simply decorated front. I wanted something that wouldn't be too fussy on the oustide so that it withstands a ton of use. I used the Distressed Dots and Black & White basics patterned papers to adorn the front flap. The true black ribbon and felt add so much. Especially when the felt is die cut with the Eyelet Lace Border Die.

A view from the back. I used the Calender Basics set to stamp the side. You may have noticed that I used velcro dots to secure the closure. Magnets would be prettier however they tend to ruin or really demagnetise the magnetic strip on credit cards. Not good huh. :)

So after I finished my little purse mini flap book calender I thought I would start a mini photo book for my purse. Here is some of it.

I used smoky Shadow cardstock for this so I went with the black velcro.
The side is stamped with family sentiment from Journaling Circle and the Calendar Basics Set. I used a pen to add a decorative line.

The front flap is lined with Library ledger paper and a Text Style stamped med. scalloped die cut trim.

Here is my first page. I will try to share the rest when I finish it up. I've got some more photos that I need to order in a small size for this size book. These would be great gifts too... either blank for someone to put their own photos in... you could include some pre-stamped journaling circles and such to help them build it too!

Whew... that was a long post! I wanted to add as many photos that were needed to help you be able to make your own little book... I hope that you will! Ohh... I almost forgot to mention that you can store eight of these little sweet things comfortably in the Papertrey Ink egg boxes! Talk about fun gift idea huh! I've been thinking about making some ahead with a decorated box for a gift set!

Circle Flower Tutorial

Using circle and hole punch- you can make these decorative flowers in minutes!

Gather your supplies: sc paper/fabRips, circle punches, hole punch, string, buttons/brads

Punch out 5-6 circles

Slightly bend the circle in half and punch a small hole at the top

String the twine through all the circles (note: if you don't want to use a flower center the smaller the whole and string the better- i'll show you an example at the end :))

Tie the string tightly (This part is tricky. The circles will try to go all over the place so you'll have to be patient)

Open and arrange the circles to look like a flower

Add a flower center (optional). You can also make your own brad using fabrips + itop tool ;)

Play around and have fun!

You can make these many different ways by using a variety of material (fabRips, paper, cardstock), different size punches (small, big, scallop), add a flower center or not... it's up to you.

Step 1
Start by inking detailed/non solid or bold lines stamps for the background using a lighter color.

Optional:
For a bi-colored look, rock 'n roll the stamp in darker ink before stamping the image on cardstock or tags.
Step 2
Using an old toothbrush, scrape along the edges of the tags or layer using dark ink to define and distress the edges.
Step 3
Ink a more solid image stamp in a complimentary color and stamp over the first images.
Step 4
Stamp focal images onto tags using darkest ink and emboss with embossing powder. Be sure to stamp and apply powder to images 1 at a time so the embossing powder will stick to the ink.

After heat embossing main images, fill in empty spaces with additional small images with darkest ink, stamping some images off on scrap paper for added dimension.
Step 5
Sponge inks over the embossed images to give them some definition, highlight using metallic gel pens if desired.
Step 6
Assemble your collage work onto a card base and embellish as desired.

Variations

-Stamp focal images over the lighter base images using darker ink and bolder stamps.
-Stamp some focal images on parchment, Designer paper or use ephemera, tear edges closely to the image and layer on your collage.
-Create dimension by stamping on Acetate or vellum with Stazon ink, cut out and layer over stamped images.
-Use glossy cardstock and VersaMark ink to stamp the base images, sponge or brayer on color and then stamp focal images over the top in a darker ink.
-Vintage images, flattened bottle caps, sewing notions, ticket stubs, clothing tags and even old jewelry pieces make excellent embellishments to add to your collage. Look around, check the junk drawer and just have fun!

Misting, Masking, & Stamping techniques by Kinsey

Using tag, die cut, stamp, embellishments and misters...

First, I used a paper punch to create the resist and the mask (a die cut machine would do the trick as well) and then used the punched shape and misted over it...

Next, using the opposite piece of the mask (the excess or outer part of the punched shape) to cover the misted area, and stamped inside the masked shape using a doily stamp from the Farmhouse stamp set...(tip: using a thin piece of paper for this step allows the stamped images to appear seamless)

Last but not least, I added a few extra touches to snazz it up a bit :) I outlined the scalloped shape (this technique looks really cute with a stitched border too), added one of the Farmhouse little flyers, and the 'Hello' stamp is from Studio Calico. Here's the finished tag:

Pressure embossing resist technique:

This technique combines:
1) pressure embossing (using a Cuttlebug, BigShot,Vagabond, Wizard whatever machine you have, and embossing folders) with 2) Heat embossing (and the resist technique).

Embossing folder
Pressure Embossing machine
Cosmo Cricket Early Bird patterned paper
Versamark ink or other clear embossing ink
Clear embossing powder (fine/detail)
A heat gun
A brayer, if you have one
Temporary adhesive or rolled pieces of scotch tape

Step 1) Pressure emboss a piece of patterned paper in an embossing folder. (The one shown here is a Stampin' Up folder Vintage Wallpaper. A gift from the world's best BFF).

Step 2) Apply clear embossing ink.

Some Tips: I like to temporarily affix the paper to keep it flat Temporary adhesive or rolled pieces of scotch tape. Then brayer Versamark clear embossing ink onto the raised areas (or carefully dab the Versamark pad directly onto the paper, if you don't have a brayer).

Step 3) Apply Clear embossing powder to the wet ink (I like fine or detail embossing powder best).

Step 4) Pour off the extra embossing powder.

Step 5) Brush away any spots of unwanted embossing powder, if there are any.

Step 6) Heat set the embossing powder with a heat gun.

Step 7) If you want high contrast to your resist (where the bright areas are nice and bright) then you might like to reapply more Versamark & embossing powder for even coverage. I find that 2 or 3 layers is good.

Step 8) Then just heat set those second or third layers of embossing powder.

Step 9) You could simply stop here & use the embossed piece as is for shiny pressure embossing or...

Add colour:

Step 10) Apply ink for a resist.

Some Tips: Be sure to let the heat embossing cool completely before inking for the best results (only takes a minute or so). I like to work with an ink dauber or sponge in circles to get in the little grooves. Dye-based ink works well but Pigment inks or Distress inks will work as well.

Step 11) Remove excess ink from the clear resist areas with a cloth.

Linda Lucas share two techniques using Spellbinders Nestabilities to cut material - and then she'll embossusing an M-Bossabilities...I love the outcome!

The second technique is layering - using different Dies Templates to add eclectic layering.

Let's get started:

Apply Elmers Craft Bond Glue Stick to your card then attach the material, then leave it to dry properly. Next, using your Spellbinders Grand Calibur® Machine cut the Labels Seventeen Nestabilities as you normally would, after running it through once, turn the whole 'sandwich' over and run it through again - this ensures that the Die has cut through the card and the material - it is as easy as that!!

Cut the butterflies from the Les Papillions. There are four die templates with this set, two give beautifully filigree butterflies and the other two are solid and embossed, great for sponging while still in the Die. At the same time cut one (1) Decorative Labels Eight Nestabilities, the largest size and one (1) fourth largest Marvelous Squares Nestabilities.

Place the Die Cut material into the M-Bossibilities and run it through the Grand Calibur, between the Base Plate and the Raspberry Adapter Plate.

You can see from the photo below how deeply etched the embossing is on the material.

Round the bottom corners of your card case and the patterned paper, sponge around the edges of the paper and using Scor-Pal® double sided tape, attach to the white card. Add SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L™ Foam Tape to the back of the Decorative Labels Eight and adhere it to the card base, you can see in the photo the dimension the foam tape adds - another great technique with the Dies.

Next attach the Labels Seventeen Die Cut Material layer using SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES BY 3L™ Foam Tape, repeating the layering adding the Foam Tape to the back of the Marvelous Squares as shown in the photo below and adhere it to the card base.

Next, layer the butterflies, using Beacon Adhesives Zip Paper Glue on the body of the solid sponged butterfly, attach the filigree butterfly, aligning the bodies. Glue the layered butterfly to the center of the layered Dies.

Finishing off with some Want2Scrap Beautiful Bling Borders - Fancy That added to opposite corners and Sleek Strip Silver Rhinestones to the body of the butterfly.

I hope you are inspired to use those material scraps you have stored away, to add to combine different Dies to add interesting layering to your projects.

I love butterfly's and this card done by Darlene Design caught my attention. Follow along as she takes you through the steps so used to create. (includes video and supplies) Enjoy!

This week is pretty much all watercolor. I used a stamp I picked up at the Scrapbook Convention here in Dallas a few months ago. I picked a part of the background to highlight (the butterfly), which you could do with a lot of background stamps out there.
I find that watercolor works best when you heat emboss the outlines. So, the background is embossed in white and the butterfly is embossed in black. I experimented with embossing the background in black but it was just too dark and distracting.
The butterfly’s antennae are glued on with embroidery thread, with a little rhinestone on the tip. I had a little mental trouble with the symmetry – you’ll see in the video, lol!

When contemplating what to make for you today, I decided I wanted to do one of my all-time favorite coloring techniques, watercolor. I LOVE the painterly look and just sitting down to do it is so relaxing! Naturally I wanted to incorporate my Copics, for their well-known vivid array of colors!

You may remember a previous project tutorial I posted with a Copic Watercoloring technique here: Copic Watercoloring. Today’s technique is a little different, in that it incorporates heat embossing!
To begin, I stamped this gorgeous Hero Arts Cling-Stencil Flower with VersaMark ink onto Hero Arts Felt Finish Natural White Watercolor Paper and heat embossed with Ranger Clear Embossing Powder & Heat It Craft Tool. This paper is 100# beautiful cream color but if you prefer white, Ellen also carries Hero Arts' Bright White version and her own Essentials by Ellen "warm white color" 140# paper.

Next, I placed drops of my chosen Copic Various Ink Refills on a Plastic Paint Palette and used a Niji Waterbrush, filled with Copic Colorless Blender Solution, to pick up the colors and color the flowers. These are the colors I used:

Ranger/Tim Holtz also offers a few other fillable water brush options – a Detailer or Broad nib that Ellen carries.
To color the flowers, I used the lighter RV63 refill to quickly cover the entire flower:

leaving the center uncolored:

You can color right over the embossed lines – the embossing powder resists the ink, leaving all of your nicely defined lines!
Then I went back with the darker RV66 and defined some areas:

BV13 Various Ink Refill was used for the blue-violet flowers but I didn’t have a close lighter or darker color to shade with, so I just went over some areas a few more times to create more depth. G43 was used in the same manner for the background.

You can always use just your plain watercolor brush to wash away and thin out the color a little from some areas – that’s what I did with the green background and it let more of the pretty watercolor paper texture show through! YR31 fills the flower centers.

The pretty Everyday Sayings sentiment was stamped with Memento Tuxedo Black ink onto more of the cream watercolor paper, cut into a banner shape, machine zig-zag stitched on the end, and X-Press It Double-Sided Foam Mounting Tape used to pop it up and adhere to the card. The Memory Box Blueberry Notecard used for the card base was a perfect match with the BV13 Copic color!
TIP: To clean up the plastic palette, just use cheap, plain household rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball instead of your more precious Colorless Blender Solution.

Why Are So Many Women Business Owners Broke?

More than 10 million women own businesses in the U.S. today. In fact, the ratio of women to men starting small businesses is 2-to-1. According to the Center for Women’s Business Research, the fastest-growing segment of women business owners is baby-boomer women 50 and older. Yet too many women business owners are broke. And it’s all because of how we “do” business.
So why are so many women business owners broke?
1. Charging too little. Women need to stand up and demand their worth. Too often, a chronic lack of confidence holds us back. Many women fear they’ll lose their values or become someone they don’t care for if they have more money. Ladies, snap out of it!
When someone asks your fee; make eye contact, say the price and wait for an answer. If you get a reaction that your fee is too high, you know you’re not speaking with your ideal customer. Set your pricing so that you earn a profit, otherwise you could find yourself with an expensive hobby and not a real business.
2. Emotional decision-making. As women, we sometimes take things personally that we shouldn’t. It’s just business. Neither your customers nor your employees should know your personal feelings. Use data to make critical business decisions. Focus on what’s in the best interest of your business. I’m not a big fan of women “acting like men,” but in the case of decision-making, it’s appropriate. Don’t complicate your business with a bunch of personal relationships, either. I believe you should never hire someone you can’t fire, so avoid hiring friends and family.
3. A noncompetitive attitude. Profit is how we keep score in business. However, we are now in a value-added economy, where people often over-deliver on service to attract and keep customers. This is a good strategy, but everything has limits. If you give everything away, there’s nothing left to take home. Go after business competitively. And never hesitate to make collection calls for payment. Do not finance your customers.
4. Not asking for the business. Generally, women excel at communicating and building relationships. But sometimes we spend so much time doing so that we forget to directly ask for the business. We’ll go to a capabilities presentation and not close with follow-up steps. Customers have no problem wasting your time. People will never hesitate to ask to pick your brain. Always be willing to schedule a 30-minute call or coffee appointment, but do not solve the customer’s problem during the meeting. Ask clarifying questions, validate that you’re more than qualified to solve their problem, and let them know how much it costs to work with you. You should close by asking them, “When do you want to get started?”
5. Superwoman syndrome. Superwoman can do anything. She can leap a tall building in a single bound, have dinner on the table by 6 p.m. and be the head PTA mom, too. Let’s get real, ladies: Superwoman does not exist. One of the deadliest things you can do to your small business is to refuse to delegate or ask for help.
Early on, get yourself a cabinet of advisors. These are four or five people already invested in your success. The group should include an existing entrepreneur, a potential customer, a mentor, an accountant and a lawyer. Often these people are already around you, but they’re not aware of each other. They could be more effective if you got them together occasionally, and best of all, they will typically work (or at least advise) for food.
If you’re married—especially if you have kids—you might need a mother’s helper or au pair who can help with household stuff, personal errands and drop-off and pick-up for kids’ activities.
As women, we are more likely to listen to our inner voices; just make sure that you keep your self-talk positive. Do not start your day in a race. Try meditation or prayer. Cut yourself a break. Remember to be patient with yourself and your customers, and you’ll never go wrong.

This week I got back to using some of my new Stampin’ Up! products – I just love this new background stamp. I used it as a focal point for this card, but I can also easily see using it as a tone-on-tone background. And don’t you love the purple background stamp? It’s called Netting, and Stampin’ Up! has had it for awhile. But I didn’t notice it in the catalog right away. It’s so subtle – it adds just the right amount of interest without distracting.

I used Copics to color them. The last time I colored poppies I used red. I don’t know if purple poppies exist, so I figured the person who receives this card likely won’t know either, LOL!! So, why not?

I did encounter a problem during coloring – you can check out the video to find out. You may be able to figure it out by looking at the photo above. And gosh, so sorry for being so chatty this time! When I watched the video afterward I thought, geez, could I ramble more?? Sorry about that!!
