Today we are featuring Sarah Lang!

1) What is your name/major/home town/year?
My name is Sarah Lang, and I’m a Physical Therapy major with a Spanish minor. I’m a junior from Ontario, NY!

2) Why did you pick Daemen College?

I picked Daemen because of it’s prestigious Physical Therapy program. I heard so much about it, and when I visited campus, I learned that all of the professors also practice in their field, do research, and work hard to integrate real life experience in the classroom. When I went to to Fall Open House, everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I loved the atmosphere on campus!

3) What’s your favorite thing to do in Buffalo?

I like to explore all of the different types of entertainment that Buffalo has to offer. I love Shea’s theater for plays and musical performances, Buffalo’s sports teams, the downtown ice skating rink, and all the different types of restaurants around the area.

4) Briefly tell us about your experience with one of the following: an internship you completed (or are currently in), a study abroad experience, or your service learning experience.

I really enjoyed my service learning experience. I was a Peer Mentor for a freshman class in IND 101. It’s the freshman seminar class where you learn the basics about college, like how to research, register for classes, be successful in classes, etc. I was able to help the students feel more comfortable on campus and be there for them in their transition, and I’m still friends with some of them!

5) What’s one piece of advice you’d give to an incoming freshman at Daemen?

I think it’s so important to keep an open mind. Going to college will introduce you to so many new opportunities and so much diversity. It’s a fresh start when you can reinvent yourself and become the person you’ve always wanted to be.

6) What is your favorite activity at Daemen outside of class?

I love being involved in the Health & Wellness Club! I became the president my sophomore year, and the leadership opportunity has taught me a lot. We put on many events around campus, like Zumba and yoga classes, trips to the Niagara Rock Climbing Center, participating in the annual Breast Cancer Walk, and running the Ultimate Wellness Challenge every spring semester. I have met a lot of really great people while being involved with this club.

Thanks Sarah!

The Daemen College Academic Festival 2013, our thirteenth year, brings us together on campus to celebrate the academic and creative achievements of Daemen students. The Academic Festival centers on student presentations to the campus and community, providing a showcase for academic achievement and excellence through student and faculty presentations, exhibitions and performances. These presentations may reflect work done in a single discipline or be interdisciplinary in nature, and include posters, papers, panel discussions, exhibits, and videos, artistic, musical or theatrical performances. The Festival Program contains the schedule and the abstracts for all presentations. We are deeply appreciative of the level of student involvement in this Academic Festival 2013.

We are also appreciative of faculty support for this endeavor. Faculty sponsors have worked with students through teaching, research projects, study abroad experiences and encouragement in their proposals. We hope you will experience the exciting and insightful ideas generated through their scholarship.

The members of the planning committee have worked very hard over the past year to make this 2013 Academic Festival a success.

One of the best things about Buffalo is the abundance of local art galleries! Whether you’re a Daemen Art student looking to intern with a professional gallery owner, or just someone who appreciates the beauty of an 18th century painting, Buffalo provides a wide array of cultural options.

The most well known art gallery (and one of the country’s oldest, established in 1862) in Buffalo is the Albright Knox nestled right next to Delaware Park. Their collection includes some of the world’s top international surveys of 20th century painting and sculpture. On any given day, you might find a group of high school students exploring the different exhibits, an Art and Yoga class for adults, or a summer concert series taking place outside.

Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center is located in downtown Buffalo, and not only holds exhibition space for artists, but also hosts literary speakers and live performances (both musical and theatrical). Their gallery is housed in a really unique space (seen below), which was formerly the Asbury Delaware Methodist Church. The mission of Hallwalls is to make art accessible to the public through exhibition and performance.

The Roycroft Campus in East Aurora honors the fine craftsmanship of the 19th century, including a print shop, furniture shop and a copper shop. The artisans of the Roycroft Campus not only construct and sell their own original pieces, but they also teach classes to the public. Students looking to study sculpture or print making at Daemen, would truly relish at the chance to work directly with one of the Roycroft artists directly.

I was a Peer Mentor which was a really great service learning experience that I had on campus. It is the main reason that I applied to be an orientation leader, because I found that I really liked helping freshman adjust to college life. It was a very rewarding experience.

5) What’s one piece of advice you’d give to an incoming student at Daemen?

Don’t be afraid to get involved on campus! Try new things and put yourself out there because there is so much that you can learn from others, and from that you can learn a lot about yourself. College is about growing and changing into the best person you can be, so take advantage of the time that you have because it will go very fast!

6) What is your favorite activity at Daemen outside of class?

Springfest!

Thanks Andrea!

Like many of you know, studying in the US can be very costly. You might want to work while you are going to school, however this is not as simple as just walking into a restaurant and being a waiter when you are on a student visa. International students that come to the US are not allowed to work anywhere outside of school. This means that we cannot get a job at a restaurant, any company near the school, or even a McDonalds. We are allowed to work 20-hours a week for an office at the college or university we attend. Depending on the size of the school you choose to attend, there will be a variety of on-campus jobs that you can still hold as an international student in the US. For example, I found work in the Admissions Office at Daemen College as a tour guide. I give tours to prospective students, show them around the school, and explain what Daemen College has to offer to all students.

I also work as a tutor, helping students with classes they are struggling with that I already took. Even though I have two jobs, it can be challenging to find a job at school. Especially at smaller colleges, the job pool is not quite as big as it would be at a large university. From my experience when searching for an on-campus job I found a few helpful tools. First, I had to keep asking different offices, then I kept an eye on the Daemen website for job openings, and I continued until I found a position. It took me one semester to finally find and get the job as a tour guide. I got an email saying that the admissions office was looking for new tour guides, and the email came with an application. So I filled out the application, and a week later they asked me to come in for an interview, and four days later I had the job.

It can be expensive to study abroad, and even though it can prove challenging to find a job, know that it is not impossible and that there are always ways to find a job and make a little extra money. If you are at a school in the US now and you are having trouble finding a job, go and talk to the people at your international student office. They have experience with these kind of things, and they will be able to help you out or at least point you in the right direction.

1) What is your name/major/home-town/year?

My name is Maria Guzman and I am an English Communications/Public Relations major with a minor in Spanish. I am from Bronx, NY and I am a sophomore.

2) Why did you pick Daemen College?

I chose to attend Daemen because I loved the small community. Everyone was friendly when I visited and it was easy to get around campus. Also, I fell in love with the RIC which is one of main reasons why I came.

3) What’s your favorite thing to do in Buffalo?

My favorite thing to do in Buffalo is explore places I have never seen, such as Niagara Falls.

4) Briefly tell us about your experience with one of the following: an internship you completed (or are currently in), a study abroad experience, or your service learning experience.

I am currently working at Lafayette High School in Buffalo tutoring kids. It is for my Service Learning program and I have helped students apply to college, write personal essays and apply for the FAFSA.

5) What’s one piece of advice you’d give to an incoming freshman at Daemen?

One piece of advice I’d give to an incoming freshman at Daemen is to seek help when needed. The professors have office hours and it is important to see them outside of class. In addition, there are tutors free of charge.

6) What is your favorite activity at Daemen outside of class?

My favorite activity outside of Daemen classes are the LEADS events. The LEADS events are very informative and help students learn about something new, whether it’s techniques or skills needed to succeed.

Thanks Maria!

One of the reasons we were so excited to write an Admissions blog is because it gives us the chance to highlight how great Buffalo is! Although Daemen is nestled just outside of the city in Amherst, students still have access to the city’s cultural treasures.

Prospective students and their families visiting from across New York state, out-of-state, and even out of the country frequently ask us what the area has to offer (“Where can I get the best wings?”). Buffalo’s historical architecture, art galleries, local cuisine, and cultural/musical events, are just a few reasons why we’re proud to share the city with you!

Daemen’s new International Center for Excellence in Animation (ICEA) is located down the street from our main campus, right in Buffalo. Our Animation studios are housed in the Tri-Main Center, and allow our students to work directly with a full-fledged Animation company called IBC Digital.

We plan to feature more Buffalo stories on this blog, so that when making your college decision, you not only learn about our campus, but the surrounding areas as well! Let us know what Buffalo stories you’d like to see here!

I can not believe how fast time has flown by. I still remember the first day when I came here in September of 2012. I walked to the Daemen campus for the first time and saw a small private college. The people were so friendly, I would walk by someone and they always greeted me with a smile. I felt safe on campus and very relaxed. I knew at this moment that Daemen would be a suitable place for study.

The Global Programs Office (GPO) at Daemen held an orientation for new international students. During orientation, GPO introduced the campus environment and offered a campus tour. GPO also helped with opening a bank account and making sure my cell phone worked. The Global Office give me everything I needed while living in the U.S. The office also offers several activities during each semester; this past year they host a Halloween party, we visit Niagara Fall, and even went snow tubing. It is amazing here at Daemen.

Below are some Frequently Asked Questions about the day and what to expect!

How do I get nominated for Transfer Scholars Day?

Nominations come via mail and email from the office of admissions. Nomination is based on academic achievement and determined upon receiving a completed application and all academic transcripts.

What do I turn in to complete the Transfer Scholar’s Day application?
