If you are planning a trip to Washington, DC and are only looking for downtown hotels (i.e., within the District of Columbia), you may want to broaden your search to include suburban hotels. In particular, you may want to include Northern Virginia and Maryland hotels in your search. Further, you should consider Washington area hotels located near DC metro subway stations because the metro system gives you access to much of what Washington, DC has to offer, and you may be able to find a more reasonably priced hotel near, but not in, Washington. That is, by using DC by Metro you may be able to get a Washington, DC area hotel without the DC hotel price.

In Northern Virginia you can find hotels located near metro subway stations in Arlington County; the city of Alexandria; and Vienna, VA, which is in Fairfax County. The Arlington County Metro Stations with hotels nearby are Rosslyn, Courthouse, Ballston-MU, Pentagon City, and Crystal City. Alexandria has three metro stops with hotels nearby--Braddock Road, King Street (the major Alexandria stop serving Old Town Alexandria), and Eisenhower Avenue. Finally, the Dunn Loring Metro Station, which is in Vienna, VA, (Fairfax County) has a hotel that you can see from the Metro Station exit. The areas around the other Maryland metro stations with hotels nearby have a somewhat more suburban feel, but at any one of these stations you may be able to find the perfect Washington, DC area hotel at a suburban price. The Omni Shoreham Hotel is Near Dupont Circle and the National Zoo

The Omni Shoreham is a huge hotel and regularly hosts conferences. It is located within a short walk from the Woodley Park Metro Station. Woodley Park is one of the metrorail stops for the zoo and is just one stop beyond Dupont Circle as you head out of town on the Red Line.

Information on the Woodley Park Metro Station and Directions to the Omni Shoreham Hotel

The full name of Woodley park Metro Station is Woodley Park Zoo/Adams Morgan. The National Zoo is within walking distance of the metro station and Adams Morgan is noted for its nightlife.
Woodley Park is on the Red Line, and it takes about 14 minute ride to the Smithsonian Metro Station. You will need to transfer metro subway trains to either the Orange or Blue Lines at Metro Center.

It is a short walk (2-3 minutes) from the Woodley Park Metro Station to the Omni Shoreham hotel. As you leave the very long escalator that leads from the Metro subway station to street level you will see Connecticut Avenue on your left and 24th Street leading diagonally off Connecticut to your right. If you take 24th Street to the next intersection you will be able to see the very large and distinct Omni Shoreham to your right. The picture below will give you an idea of the hotel's distinctive nature. With the metro subway station nearby getting around Washington is just steps away from the hotel. The hotel is just a few minutes walk from the metro subway station.

There Are Three Hotels Near the Woodley Park Metro Station

There are three hotels within a short walk of the Woodley Park Metro Station. They are the Wardman Park Marriott, which is adjacent to the station exit; the Omni Shoreham; and the Woodley Park Guest House (a B&B). Both the Wardman Park Marriott and the Omni Shoreham are huge, and, by contrast, the Woodley Park Guest House is small with just 15 guest rooms.

The Woodley Park Metro Station is one stop beyond famed Dupont Circle on the Red Line and is near the National Zoo. The area is also noted for its nightlife. It takes about 14 minutes to reach the Smithsonian Station on the Red Line with a transfer to either the Orange or Blue Line at the Metro Center Station.

If you have a meeting scheduled at either the Marriott or the Omni Shoreham, you might want to check hotels rates at all three hotels. They are within a short walk of each other.

The Washington, DC Four Points by Sheraton is within walking distance of three Metro Stations, although the walk from the Mt. Vernon Square Metro Station is considerably further than the other two. Also as is the case for several hotels in DC, the Four Points is in a business district. As a consequence, the surrounding area may be relatively deserted nights and weekends.

Information on Nearby Metro Stations and Walking Directions to the DC Four Points by Sheraton

The McPherson Square Metro Station is on the Blue and Orange Lines, and it is about a 4 minute ride to the Smithsonian Station, which is also served by the Blue and Orange Lines.
The hotel is about a six minute walk from McPherson Square's Franklin Square, 14th Street Exit. As you exit the escalator, 14th Street is on your left. Turn left on 14th and cross I (Eye) Street, which is just a few steps from the station exit, and walk a block to K Street. Turn right on K and the Four Points is about a block and a half down on your left. You will cross 13th Street along the way. The hotel is about .3 miles from the Metro Station.

The Metro Center Metro Station is on the Red, Blue and Orange Lines, and it is about a 3 minute ride to the Smithsonian Station if you take either the Orange or Blue Lines.
From the G and 12th Street Exit the Four Points is about a six minute walk. The walk is along 12th Street. As you exit the escalator 12th Street is on your right. Turn right on 12th and walk toward the Marriott, which is just a 100 or so steps from the escalator. After passing the Marriott you will cross H Street, New York Avenue, and I (Eye) Street on the way to K Street. Turn left on K and the Four Points is across K on your right. The hotel is about .3 miles from the Metro Station.

The Mt. Vernon Square 7th Street-Convention Center Metro Station is on the Yellow and Green Lines, and it is about a 6 minute ride to the L'Enfant Plaza Station, which is a short walk from the National Mall and the Smithsonian.
It is a long walk from this station to the Four Points. Check a Washington map for the best route. The hotel is about .5 miles from the Metro Station.

The Washington Marriott Wardman Park--Just Steps from the Woodley Park Metro Station Which Serves the National Zoo

The Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel is among Washington's largest hotels, and it has meeting facilities befitting its size. However, if you are not in Washington for a meeting but want to be within walking distance of the National Zoo, the Wardman Park may also be a good choice for you. And if the Washington nightlife interests you the nearby Dupont Circle and Adams Morgan neighborhoods may fit the bill.

The Marriott is adjacent to the metro station, and because of its size it is next to impossible not to see the hotel as you exit the metro station at street level. The Woodley Park Metro Station and Walking Directions to the Wardman Park Marriott

The Woodley Park/Zoo/Adams Morgan Metro Station is on the Red Line. It is about a 14 minute ride to the Smithsonian Metro Station, and you will need to transfer to either the Blue or Orange Lines at Metro Center Station. The Wardman Park Marriott is gigantic and just steps from the metro station. You could easily wear yourself out just walking inside the hotel. To reach the hotel's check in area from the metro, it is probably best to take the mezzanine elevator, which you can find after you leave the turnstiles. You will exit the elevator at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Woodley Road. Woodley Road will be behind you as you leave the elevator. Turn left onto Woodley and follow the signs. If you take the very long escalator, you will exit alongside Connecticut Avenue. Woodley Road will be behind you. As you walk from the escalator, you can begin to get a sense of how big the hotel is. It occupies all the area alongside the sidewalk from the escalator to Woodley Road and you are only seeing a portion of the hotel. It is considerably bigger than the part you can see from the escalator. So, while the hotel is near the metro station, it could still be a long walk to your room if it is located at the back of the hotel away from the metro station.

The Woodley Park Metro Station is on the Red Line and serves the National Zoo. It is about a 14 minute ride to the Smithsonian Metro Station, and you will need to change trains to either the Orange or Blue Lines at the Metro Center Station. The Woodley Park Guest House is located across the street from one of the biggest hotels in the city--the Washington Marriott Wardman Park. To reach the B&B for the first time from the Metro Station it is probably best to take the station's mezzanine elevator, which you can find after you leave the turnstiles. At street level, you will exit the elevator at the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Woodley Road. Woodley Road will be behind you as you leave the elevator. Turn left onto Woodley and the Guest House is about half a block down and across the street. If you take the very long escalator, you will exit alongside Connecticut Avenue. Woodley Road will be behind you. Either way, this B&B is near both metro station exits, being only a minute or two walk. The escalator is about .1 miles from the Guest House and the elevator just 200-300 feet away. The hotel's cozy size and proximity to the metro station may make this Washington, DC hotel perfect for you.

The Hotels on Capitol Hill are Near the Major Washington Attractions

If you're next Washington, DC trip calls for you to spend time at the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, or if you want to be reasonably close to the Smithsonian/National Mall, then a Capitol Hill hotel may be just what you need.

Hotels on the Senate Side of Capitol Hill

These hotels are relatively close to each other, so if you have a meeting in one of them, you may be able to find a better deal at one of the other hotels. These hotels are approximately .4-.5 miles from the Capitol and about .1 miles closer to the Senate office buildings. The start of the National Mall with the Smithsonian buildings is about .5-.6 miles from these hotels. Of course, the National Mall is almost two miles from the Capitol end of the Mall to the Lincoln Memorial, so you will have plenty of walking left.

Hotels on the House Side of Capitol Hill

These hotels are on the House side of of Capitol Hill. Capitol Hill Suites is about .4 miles from the Capitol and closer to House office buildings. It is also close to the Jefferson Building, the main building of the Library of Congress. The Holiday Inn is over .5 miles from the Capitol, but it is one of the closest hotels to the major buildings of the Smithsonian, and it may have lower room rates than many other hotels in the area.

The Rosslyn Metro Station is located in Arlington, VA and has eight hotels near the metro station, although two are longer walks from the station than normally covered by DCbyMetro staff. The Rosslyn Station is the closest metro station to Georgetown, which is just across the river. In fact, if you are adventurous, you can walk across the Key Bridge to Georgetown, or you can take the Circulator bus. Just ask at your hotel for information.

The Rosslyn Metro Station and Surrounding Area

(Served by the Orange and Blue Metro Rail Lines)

The Rosslyn Metro Station is on the Orange and Blue Lines, and it is about a 10 minute ride to the Smithsonian Metro Station on either line. This Metro stop may be a good choice the next time you need a Washington, DC area hotel. It has several things going for it. It is the first Virginia stop on the orange and blue lines, it has eight Washington area hotels near the metro station, although two are beyond the walking distance we consider, and there are numerous shops and restaurants in the area, including a small shopping mall at the Metro entrance, which includes a pharmacy and a commuter store where you can purchase Metro fare cards. A Safeway Grocery Store, which is is beyond the Hyatt Arlington as you walk from the Metro Station, is also in the neighborhood. In short, if you are looking for a DC area hotel that is just outside the District, Rosslyn gives you have plenty of choices. One word of caution. The escalators at Rosslyn are very long. If, by chance, they are all out of service (which has been the case in the past), you will either need to take the slow elevator or you will need to climb the stairs, making leaving the station a very tiring event.

The street behind the very long escalator leading from the Metro's turnstile area is North Moore Street. You can reach all the hotels near the Rosslyn metro station via North Moore Street. There is also a McDonald's to the left as you leave the Metro area, but it is difficult to see because of the trees.

Also for the adventurous, Washington's famed Georgetown is just across Key Bridge. If you stay at the Key Bridge Marriott, the bridge is just a few steps away. The Marriott is just a bridge away from being a true Washington hotel.

Having your hotel near the Rosslyn metro station, which is the closest metro station to the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial featuring the flag raising at Iwo Jima, allows you to reflect on this very important piece of American history. Although Arlington National Cemetery is the next stop on the blue line, the cemetery starts at the war memorial, and it is an inspiring walk from the war memorial to the cemetery's visitor's center.

At .4 and .6 miles respectively, the Best Western Rosslyn Iwo Jima Arlington Virginia Hotel and the Virginian Suites Arlington are the two Rosslyn hotels beyond our DC by Metro's normal walking distance. However, in case you are a Best Western fan or you want to investigate the Virginian Suites Arlington, we have included links to their TripAdvisor pages. Either one of these may fill your DC hotel needs.

The Ballston-MU Metro Station and Surrounding Area

The Ballston-MU Metro Station is on the Orange Line. It takes about an 18 minute ride to reach the Smithsonian Metro Station, and you do not have to change metro rail trains. The Ballston area in has a vibrant shopping district with a mall (The Ballston Common Shopping Center), numerous independent shops, and a wide selection of restaurants within walking distance of the metro station and area hotels. And there is a Metro Commuter Store at the entrance to the metro station where you can find general information on Metro transportation and purchase Metro Smart Trip cards. It is located next to the station's escalator at street level.

Additionally, there are four Washington, DC area hotels within walking distance, although at .5 miles some might classify the walk to one of the hotels, the Comfort Inn Ballston, as a hike. DC by Metro doesn't normally include hotels that far from the Metro Station, but we have provided a link to TripAdvisor for your use if you are a Comfort Inn fan. The other three Washington, DC area hotels--Hilton Arlington, Holiday Inn Arlington at Ballston, and Westin Arlington Gateway--are comparatively nearer to the metro stop. In fact, the Hilton Arlington is the closest Virginia hotel to a metro station. Because Ballston has ample shopping, a wide selection of restaurants, and several hotels near to the metro station, we have designated it as a five-star stop.

From the Metro station exit area there is a sky walk leading to the Ballston Common Shopping Center. As you exit the escalator, straight ahead you will see the entrance to the Ballston Metro Center. Once in the Center bear to the right and walk past the entrance to the Hilton Arlington. You will see a narrow escalator leading up to a sky walk which crosses two streets and passes the National Science Foundation on the way to the Ballston Common Shopping Center, a mall complete with food court, a movie theater, and a comedy club. There are also numerous other restaurants and shops in the Ballston neighborhood, and across the street from the mall is a Harris Teeter super market. With all these amenities you might want to consider Ballston the next time you need a Washington, DC hotel near a metro station. If you do, you will find that Arlington, Virginia has a lot to offer visitors to the Washington, DC area.

The Court House Station is the second Virginia stop on the Orange Line, and it may be a good choice for you the next time you need a Washington, DC hotel or a Washington, DC area hotel. It is close to the District, you do not have to change trains if you are going to the Smithsonian, and there are numerous restaurants in the neighborhood. Also, there are three hotels near this metro station. Because there are three exits from the Metro Station make special note of the exit that is best for your hotel. If you're planning a visit to the Washington, DC area, staying at Arlington, Virginia's Crystal City may be perfect for you. Sure it isn't in Washington proper, but you'll hardly notice that in this bustling neighborhood just across the Potomac from DC. To reach the street level from the Metro Station entrance/turnstile area you need to take two escalators. The first takes you to Crystal City Shops, a mall with over 100 stores, shops and eateries, many of which are underground. The second takes you from the shops area to street level.

You will find Crystal City Shops an interesting, maze-like collection of shops having much of what a visitor to the area will need. Restaurant choices range from Bailey's Pub & Grill to McCormick & Schmick's to Morton's Stakehouse to McDonald's and many places in between, and that doesn't include all the neighborhood restaurants not in the mall. By walking through the sprawling Crystal City Shops you can reach two Marriott hotels without venturing outside, and there are several other hotels from which to choose but they require a short outside walk.

Within a ten minute walk you can find a Sheraton, Hampton Inn, Raddison, Crowne Plaza, and a Hilton. You probably won't find these hotels to be inexpensive, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Of course, you may also find them a bargain compared to DC hotels, making Crystal City a great place to find a Washington, DC area hotel near a metro station.

Being served by two Metro Lines, the Yellow and Blue, also gives you more choices. If you are heading to the Smithsonian, the Blue Line in the direction of Largo Town Center is probably your best choice. The trains stops at the Smithsonian Station, which is located on the National Mall. When you arrive at the Smithsonian Station be sure to use the "Mall Exit." The signs on the wall in front of you as you leave the train will indicate the direction. Of course, you are probably safe if you just follow the crowd. You can also reach the Mall area using the Yellow Line in the direction of Fort Totten, but you will either have to change trains or walk from the L'Enfant Plaza Station. If you choose to walk from L'Enfant Plaza, make sure you exit using the 7th Street/Maryland Avenue/Smithsonian Museums Exit. L'Enfant Plaza has three exits and they can be very confusing. If you are a newbie to the Metro System, taking the Blue Line is much preferred. However, if you are going to the Washington Convention Center, the Yellow Line in the direction of Fort Totten is for you. It stops at the Mt. Vernon Square/7th Street/Convention Center Station.

Fortunately, reaching Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport is more straightforward. Both the Yellow and Blue Line trains will get you there. Take the Blue Line in the direction of Franconia-Springfield or the Yellow toward Hunington. They both depart from the same platform, so you can take the first train in that direction that arrives. The airport is just one stop away.

There are four hotels near the Pentagon City Metro Station. The Ritz Carlton is next to the Pentagon City Station and the Residence Inn is about a six minute walk. A Doubletree and Embassy Suites are ten minutes plus walks from the metro subway station. Because of its major shopping mall (The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City), service by two Metro lines (blue and yellow), and proximity to downtown Washington, DC, Pentagon City is one of the most popular Metro stops in Northern Virginia for visitors. It is also only one stop away from the Pentagon and two stops from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

If you are planning a trip to DC and want a Washington area hotel near a metro station, Pentagon City may be just right for you. Or, if you want to find a place to eat without having to brave the elements, Pentagon City should be high on your list of possible eating places. Of course, you shouldn't overlook Crystal City if hotels and restaurants near to a metro station are important to you. It is just one stop from Pentagon City and has more DC area hotels to choose from. So, for your next DC hotel, you may want to consider the Washington, DC area hotels at Pentagon City and Crystal City.

We report on two hotels--The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City and the Residence Inn Arlington, Pentagon City. However, two other hotels--Embassy Suites Crystal City-National Airport and DoubleTree Hotel Washington DC-Crystal City--are near the metro station but are beyond the distance reported on DC by Metro. For more information on these hotels, we have included links to TripAdvisor. The DoubleTree and Residence Inn may be of particular interest to Pentagon visitors. They are within walking distance. [Because of Pentagon security considerations, we suggest you check with hotel staff for information on this aspect of these hotels.]

After you leave the entrance/exit area of the Metro station there is a tunnel with three exits--two to the left and one to the right. To the left are the Fashion Centre and the Ritz-Carlton and to the right is the Residence Inn.

While the Fashion Centre offers a shopping mall environment, you can also bypass the mall and shop and eat where the locals go. In fact, you walk through the food court area of the mall to get to the local shopping district. If you turn left in the metro station tunnel, the Fashion Centre mall is directly in front of you at the end of the tunnel. You will exit the tunnel and a short escalator ride takes you to the mall's food court area. If you continue straight, you will pass Johnny Rockets on your right and then a few steps further will be McDonald's again to your right. Beyond and to the left of McDonald's, you will see a short ramp leading to a parking garage. At the other side of the garage is a bank of soft drink machines. Take the stairs next to the drink machines and when you reach street level the local shopping area is to your right. There you will find a Harris Teeter supermarket and numerous other shops and restaurants. If you don't see what you want, don't hesitate to ask someone. We did and that's how we found the Harris Teeter.

Hotels Near the Dunn Loring Metro Station in Vienna, VA

The Dunn Loring Metro Station is the next to last stop on the Virginia side of the Orange line and is located in Fairfax County. There is only one Washington, DC area hotel near the Metro Station--the Dunn Loring Fairfax Courtyard.

As shown in the photo below the hotel can be seen from the Metro exit and is about a 5 minute walk (approx. 1/4 mile). The Courtyard has a restaurant, and there is a lot of development underway around the metro station, including restaurants. As of April 2013 two new restaurants were open with two more on the way. If this doesn't meet your needs, the Ballston-MU Metro Station area is a short metro ride away (about 11 minutes) and offers ample shopping and restaurants.

Additionally, there is one group of restaurants at Dunn Loring that are about a half-mile from the Courtyard hotel and another group about a mile away. If you have a car, you are in luck not only because you have a reasonable selection of restaurants within a short drive but also because the parking at the Courtyard is free. (Be sure to check with hotel staff to confirm that this perk is still included.) So, for your next Washington, DC area hotel, this may be a good choice, particularly if you are driving to the area from the west as this metro station is near I-66. (You will have to get off the Interstate a few miles before Gallows Road because there isn't an exit at Gallows Road, but that shouldn't pose too much of a problem.) If you are willing to stay at a Washington, DC area hotel that is near the limits of the metro system, you may find the Dunn Loring-Merrifield Station perfect for you.

Notice: On September 28, 2011 the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, which operates the metro subway system, released the following: "Beginning Oct. 17, Metro will temporarily relocate the bus bays at Dunn Loring Station for two-and-half-years due to a major construction project to build residential and retail space." As construction progresses the route to the Courtyard (and the Homewood Suite discussed below) may be obstructed. Check with hotel staff for the latest on the construction. While the construction may impede your view of the Courtyard, use the photo below to give you an idea of where you need to head once you leave the metro station. The Bethesda Court Hotel's web site boasts of 150 restaurants within a two block radius. While we cannot confirm this, you won't go hungry for lack of choices. There are numerous restaurants and shops nearby. You might want to check TripAdvisor to see what people have to say about the Tako Grill (Trip Advisor Link) and the Kabob Bazaar (TripAdvisor Link), both of which are nearby.

Information on the Bethesda Metro Station and Directions to the Bethesda Court Hotel

With several hotels such as the Bethesda Court Hotel and numerous restaurants within walking distance, the Bethesda Metro Station is tourist friendly. The Bethesda subway station is served by the Red Line. It is about a 25 minute ride to the Smithsonian Metro Station and you will need to change metro-rail trains at the Metro Center Metro Station.

The escalator from the Metro subway station exits at a bus terminal for area buses. (By the way, a Circulator bus stops at the bus terminal, and its route includes stops behind the Bethesda Court. Ask hotel staff for information.)

Beyond the bus terminal is an escalator leading to street level. This escalator exits on the correct side of Wisconsin Avenue and you are facing the direction of the Bethesda Court Hotel. Cross Old Georgetown Road, which is just in front of you, and continue down Wisconsin for about three blocks. The Bethesda Court Hotel will be on your left. It is about a four minute walk from the Metro subway station to the hotel.

The Washington Court Hotel on Capitol Hill--Near Union Station, The Capitol, and the National Mall

The Washington Court Hotel on Capitol Hill is one of five hotels near Union Station. The others are Hotel George, the Liaison Capitol Hill, the Phoenix Park, and the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill. If you have a meeting at the Washington Court Hotel on Capitol Hill but would like to stay elsewhere, these hotels are nearby, and they are within walking distance of the Capitol, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, and the Capitol end of the National Mall/Smithsonian, although the walk to the more distant locations can be over a half mile.

Information on the Union Station Metro Station and Directions to the Washington Court Hotel on Capitol Hill

The Union Station Metro Station is served by the Red Line. It is about a 12 minute ride to either the Smithsonian or L'Enfant Metro Stations. However, you have to change trains for either station. To get to the Washington Court from Union Station the Massachusetts Avenue Metro Exit is closest. When you exit the escalator 1st Street, NE is to your left. You need to turn left and walk along 1st Street. Columbus Circle and Massachusetts Avenue will be just a few steps away. Cross Massachusetts Avenue at the edge of Columbus Circle. Just after you cross Massachusetts turn right onto E Street. You will cross North Capitol Street as you walk to New Jersey Avenue. Turn right onto New Jersey Avenue. The Washington Court Hotel will be a few steps down New Jersey on your right. With Union Station, Columbus Circle and streets at odd angles, this can be a confusing walk, and to further complicate the walk as of June 2012 there was a lot of construction in the area. As a result, we strongly recommend you make your first walk during daylight hours. A taxi ride from Union Station may be a good idea for your first trip to the hotel. The hotel is about .3 miles from the Union Station Metro Station. To get a sense of the area in front of Union Station visit the Web cam for this area. The Massachusetts Avenue metro exit is located on the left side of Union Station. [NOTE: All the views available may be at night. If so, visit the the Web cam at a different time of day.]

The Washington Court Hotel is also close to the Judiciary Square Metro Station, but Judiciary Square is not as visitor-friendly as many other Metro Stations. It is intended for local residents having business at nearby government offices. Also note, the 4th Street entrance closes at midnight on Monday to Thursday, at 3:00 a.m. on Friday, and is closed on Saturday and Sunday (as of June 2012). If you use Judiciary Square, we strongly suggest you walk the route first during daylight hours.

The Residence Inn Arlington Pentagon City is Near Visitor Friendly Fashion Centre at Pentagon City

This Pentagon City Residence Inn is a short metro ride from Reagan National Airport and downtown Washington. For example, it is only about a six-minute ride via the yellow line to downtown DC, with L'Enfant Plaza being the closest yellow-line stop to the Smithsonian. If the Smithsonian is your destination, you can also use the Blue Line to reach the Smithsonian Metro Station, which is on the National Mall and the most convenient metro stop for the Smithsonian. And, the hotel is even closer to Ronald Reagan National Airport, which may make this neighborhood worthy of your consideration for your next Washington, DC area hotel stay. You can use either the Blue or Yellow Lines to reach the airport, but check with the hotel about shuttle service.

The Pentagon City Metro Station and Walking Directions to the Residence Inn

The Pentagon City Metro Station is on the Blue and Yellow Lines. The ride to L'Enfant Plaza on the Yellow Line takes about 6 minutes. The Blue Line also stops at L'Enfant Plaza, but the ride is about twice as long. The good thing about the Blue Line is that it stops at the Smithsonian Station.
At .3 miles (about a 6 minute walk), the Residence Inn Arlington Pentagon City is near the Pentagon City Metro Station.

The Pentagon City Metro Station is next to the Fashion Centre at Pentagon City shopping mall, a DC visitor favorite. There are two equally convenient routes from the Metro Station to the hotel. As you leave the station's turnstile area, there is a tunnel. If you turn left, the tunnel leads to the food court level of the mall; but to reach the hotel you should turn right. After turning right go to the end of the tunnel and use the escalator to reach the street level. At the top of the escalator you will find South Hayes Street to your right. Turn right on South Hayes and either walk a long block to Army-Navy Drive where you need to turn right, or after just a few steps down South Hayes turn right on 12th Street and then left on South Fern Street. The Residence Inn is at the corner of Army-Navy Drive and South Fern Street. Both routes from the Metro station to the hotel may be sparsely traveled, particularly at night. Caution is warranted. Also, there is a lot of construction along South Hayes Street. The best route to the hotel may depend on what construction is being done when you visit.

In addition to being close to the District, National Airport, and the Pentagon City shopping mall, there are a few neighborhood restaurants and shops within walking distance of the hotel. Check with hotel staff for more information and their restaurant recommendations. If you are a Costco member, bring your card. The warehouse club is a short walk from the station. Ask at the hotel for directions.

Tips on Lowering Your Hotel Bill--Finding a Good Hotel That is a Bargain and May Even be Cheap

Are you planning a hotel stay in a major city in the near future? Do you plan on staying at a national chain? There is a good chance you can trim your hotel bill with just a few minutes of planning. This is especially the case if your stay includes nights late in the week—Thursday through Saturday. For example, on a recent trip to Washington, DC I was able, with a five minute phone call, to cut my four-day hotel bill from the $836 it would have cost had I followed the advice of my employer’s travel agency to $446, and I did not have to change to another hotel or even downgrade my hotel room. The steps I used are described below. Try them and you too may be able to save.

Pick your desired hotel(s). Selecting several hotels probably increases your chances of savings, but they should be hotels acceptable to you. If the hotels you select cater to business travelers, you have an even better chance of finding a great deal.
For each day you plan to stay check rates for the hotels you have selected. For example, if you are planning a four-night stay from Tuesday to Saturday, check the rate for each night separately. You might find that Tuesday and Wednesday nights cost substantially more than Thursday and Friday nights. My experience in staying in the Washington, DC area is that Sunday through Wednesday nights are most expensive and Thursday through Saturday are substantially less expensive. (Sometimes Sunday is in the less expensive group.) This is particularly the case when I stay just outside the city. Having the Metro makes this next to no sacrifice.
If you find different rates for different nights, call reservations and ask for the lower rates for as many of the nights you plan to stay as possible. Otherwise, the hotel is likely to quote the higher rate for all the nights in hopes that you will pay. In the above example, my employer’s travel agent booked my room for $209/night for a Wednesday through Sunday stay. It turned out that when I checked each night separately Wednesday night cost $209, but the other nights could be booked for $79 per night. I called the hotel’s corporate reservation line and asked for the lower rate for Thursday through Saturday nights, which the reservation clerk did willingly, and I saved almost $400. I did not have to check out and check back in, and I got the same room I would have gotten for the higher charge.
If you have flexibility on the days you travel, do the above price checking first. You might be able to cut out the expensive nights all together just by altering your schedule.
As an aside, the above is particularly easy in the Washington, D.C. area, and if you find a hotel near a Metro stop, staying in Northern Virginia or Maryland will open you to the entire area without the hassle of having to drive. In short, you can have your cake and save money too.

Hotels Near Union Station--Washington, DC's Historic Train Station

There are five hotels near Union Station. All these hotels are a short walk from the Union Station Metro Rail Station, which is one level below the train station. The five hotels located in downtown Washington, DC are:

At about .3 miles (about a 6 minute walk), the Hyatt and Liaison are the furthest from the station and at about .1 miles the Phoenix Park is closest. With Amtrak, Virginia and Maryland commuter rail, Metrorail, plus local busses, Union Station, Washington, DC’s iconic train station, is a major transportation hub for the city. But with 100+ shops and a wide selection of eateries, including full-service restaurants and a food court, Union Station is much more than just a transportation hub, and to top it off the building itself is a worthy tourist destination. In fact, according to Travel and Leisure, Union Station, with 39 million visitors per year is the third most visited tourist attraction in the world.

Officially opened in October 1907 and restored in the 1980s, Union Station is modeled in the Beaux-Arts style with stately columns and classic lines. This beautiful building set the standard for many of DC’s architectural landmarks that followed, including the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Federal Triangle, the Supreme Court Building and the National Gallery of Art.

When you are in the main hall look up at the 36 Roman legionnaires perched on the ledge high above the floor and picture them as nudes for behind the shields they hold that is just what they are. The shields were added to blunt feared public outrage. Of course, you will also want to marvel at the grandeur of the massive hall with its 90+ feet high ceiling. In short, inside and out this impressive structure is worthy of a visit. However, you should take note that as of this writing (Summer 2012) Union Station is undergoing extensive repairs necessitated by the major earthquake that struck the region in 2011, additionally damaging the National Cathedral and the Washington Monument.

The L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station and Directions to the Holiday Inn Washington-Capitol

The L'Enfant Plaza Metro Station is served by four Metro subway lines--the Blue, Orange, Yellow and Green Lines, and the station is within walking distance of the National Mall and the Smithsonian Museums, which is located on the Mall. Because this is a major transfer station it is more complex than most stations. As a result, care needs to be exercised to make sure the correct exit is used.

The 7th & D Street Exit and the 7th St, Maryland Avenue, Smithsonian Museums Exit are about the same distance from the Holiday Inn, but the latter is closer to the National Mall. As you leave the 7th Street/Maryland Avenue/Smithsonian Museums Exit escalator, Maryland Avenue is on your left. Walk along Maryland in the same direction as you are heading when you leave the escalator. Turn right on 6th Street and as you walk down 6th you will be able to see the Holiday Inn Washington-Capitol on your left. The hotel is about .2 miles (4 minutes) from the Metro Station.
