DC Tango Practica Celebrates 4 Fabulous Years

Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 14th when we will celebrate the Practica's 4th Birthday. Victoria will be dj -- it's her last day as organizer and she'll play anything she wants!!! Be ready for lots of traditional vals and milonga sparked with favorite alternatives.

Call for Volunteers

After serving 2 years as practica organizer, Victoria Wood will soon be stepping down to reclaim her Saturday afternoons, play tons of tango piano and create and market cool stuff for Amazing Accessories, her shop on etsy.com. Bahman Aryana, current king of the sound system, has graciously agreed to take on the role of organizer after the November 14th Practica Anniversary Party.

We need your help to keep this practica running smoothly, so please contact either Victoria or Bahman if you can assist in any of the following areas (and especially if you can commit to volunteering one Saturday per month):

* transport the sound system to the practica each Saturday and store it during the week,
* send monthly calendar updates to Capital Tangueros and update the new Practica FaceBook page,
* set-up and clean-up each week,
* arrange for volunteer djs,
* contact with the DC West End Library to give weekly headcount and confirm room reservations.

Tango Panopticon is Tomorrow May 1st

The DC May Day Tango Panopticon milonga is scheduled for Friday, May 1st from Noon-2pm. Structured like the Tango Intervention (i.e., WEAR BLACK!), tango will be danced outside the main entrance of the Martin Luther King Library at 901 G Street, NW (Metro Red Line: Gallery Place).

Before the Practica: Tango Intervention on Saturday April 11

Robert Lawrence stopped by last week's practica to invite everyone to this FREE one-time event. In case you missed him, here are the details .....

TIME: Noon till 2:00pm, Saturday April 11

LOCATION: Sylvan Theatre, on the Mall just Southeast of the Washington Monument. Participants will dance on the large wooden stage with a dramatic view of the Monument.

WHAT: An outdoor milonga as performance art piece. See the artist's statement, info about past Tango Interventions on the Brooklyn Bridge and in Vienna, and more from Robert's website at http://www.tangointervention.org/about.htm

DRESS: All BLACK is required! This is, after all, a "social sculpture" and participants need to present a unified appearance. Anything black is fine .... shorts and slippers are fine ... it just has to be BLACK!

RSVP: Because of National Park Service regulations there may be limits to the number of participants, so please register by email for the event ASAP to insure a space (and help with gender balance): tangointervention@gmail.com

Please remember that the West End Library closes at 5:30 pm on Saturdays. The Library staff has requested that we clean up our practica and vacate the meeting room by 5:15 pm so that they are able to close the building on time. Please return your chair to the stacks at the far end of the room and don't forget to throw away your used cups and other personal trash in the large bin by the door on your way out.

If You Want To Volunteer ...

Your help is needed and appreciated!

If you can arrive @ 2:15pm and want to help set up, the following things need doing each week:

(Please refer to the flyer and map posted at the room entrance for placement of furniture and fans.)

1. Set up the chairs against the side and front wall;
2. Set up the DJ table at the far end of the room;
3. Set up the 7 fans, stored next to the wall near the food/drink/flyer table, in the windowsills and at either end of the wall opposite the windows;
4. Sweep the floor (the pushbroom is next to the food/drink/flyer table);
5. Set out the water, cups, markers, napkins, Altoids, handfans and flyers. These are in the large white box marked "DC Tango Practica" on the floor behind the food/drink/flyer table. Please fill the water jugs from the fountain in the hall.
6. When Bahman Aryana arrives with the sound system, help him set up/hook up the speakers.

Now that we are averaging over 60 people each week, thirsty tangueros are running through our stash of cups and paper towels at an impressive rate! Please bring paper cups and napkins the next time you come to the practica. And don't forget to dispose of your personal trash before you leave -- the trash can's next to the food/beverage table on the way out.

Third Year Anniversary Celebration -- November 15th

West End Library Book Sale
