Virginia Tech invades Maryland for matchup of ACC locals

The Virginia Tech Hokies, along with thousands of their fans, will invade Byrd Stadium Saturday for what could prove a lopsided contest at the rival Maryland Terrapins. With the Terps already assured of a losing season, few fans of the home squad are expected to view the game. Much of the crowd could instead be made up of Virginia Tech fans, many alums already being based in the Washington, D.C. area.

While Virginia Tech still harbors legitimate hopes for a major non-BCS bowl game, Maryland is left to play out the string for pride. The Terps will have to do without quarterback Chris Turner, sidelined by a knee injury. Jamarr Robinson will start instead for Maryland. Tyrod Taylor will again lead the Hokies at qb.

On a symbolic note, Maryland will wear camo uniforms in conjunction with the Wounded Warrior Project though few people will get to see that tribute with the game consigned to ESPN360.com. Radio coverage will air locally on both WJFK/106.7 (Terrapins) and WTEM/980 (Hokies).

In other local action, Navy will close out its home schedule against Delaware (3:30 p.m., CBSCS, WZAA/1050), fresh off earning a Texas Bowl berth. Georgetown will host defending FCS champion Richmond (1 p.m. GUHoyas.com), Howard will host Bethune Cookman (1 p.m.) while Virginia entertains Boston College (3:30 p.m., ESPN360, WTNT/570).______________________

D.C. Armor indoor football considering move from D.C.

The D.C. Armor indoor football franchise is reportedly considering a move out of the Washington, D.C. after only one year of operations. The Washington Business Journal learned from minority Armor owner Andre Johnson that the franchise is exploring the possibility of a relocation to a smaller market.

The Armor struggled for both attendance and mainstream media attention during its inaugural American Indoor Football Association season last spring. Though the team itself didn't publicly report most of its attendance figures, most unofficial estimates had Armor attendance averaging in the high triple digits, a pittance compared to its 10,000 seat D.C. Armory home arena.

The team ownership's final decision on whether to move the team, fold it outright or keep it in Washington, D.C. is expected in the next several weeks. If anecdotal signs are any indication though, the Armor won't be here for 2010. DCArmor.com has not been updated for months, a planned dance team audition was cancelled with no makeup date announced and WJLA/7 deleted its Armor promotional web page last month.______________________

Bowie State vies against Fayetteville State in CIAA championship

A three-way coin toss may have placed Bowie State into the CIAA Championship game but the Bulldogs now must rely on their own skills and expertise to take the championship back home to Maryland.

While Fayetteville State clinched the CIAA West division the previous week, Bowie State lost its final two games, either one of which would have clinch a title game berth. As it turned out though, the losses proved academic to the Bulldogs' conference title hopes as luck proved on their side.

Before its two game side, Bowie State reeled off five straight wins en route to a surprise 6-4 mark under new head coach Damon Wilson, propelled largely by a running attack under Rodney Webb and a defense that has specialized in stopping the run.

Bowie and Fayetteville State met in the final game before the Bulldogs' win streak. Bowie State fell 30-20, plagued by turnovers en route to a 20-6 deficit that would not be overcome. The Bulldogs hope to regain their stride at the most important of times.

Navy football looks for bowl clincher at Notre Dame

Coming off an upset loss to the Temple Owls, the Navy Midshipmen get another chance this afternoon to clinch bowl eligibility for the Texas Bowl, looking to again topple the longtime rival Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

It was just two years ago when Navy ended a decades long run of futility against Notre Dame, toppling the then-reeling squad to the delight of a nation. While Navy has maintained its formidable mid-major standing, Notre Dame has once again taken itself back to the ranks of the national powerhouses, ranked #19 in the country with a 6-2 record.

The Midshipmen should be encouraged for this afternoon's effort by the return of quarterback Ricky Dobbs to the starting lineup, just a weeks after being diagnosed with a cracked kneecap. Mids fans hope that Dobbs can regain the form that has helped make Navy's triple option offense the top ranked rushing attack in college football.

In local ACC action, the Virginia Cavaliers face long odds trying to stop a two game slide, matched at the #16 nationally ranked Miami Hurricanes (12 p.m., WTTG/5, WTEM/980). The Maryland Terrapins meet the N.C. State Wolfpack with the losing team to be formally eliminated from bowl eligibility. (1 p.m., ESPN980, WJFK/106.7). Virginia Tech already defeated East Carolina last Thursday in nonconference play.

Bowie State wins CIAA coin toss, advances to title game

What Bowie State failed to achieve in two straight games on the field of play, it gained by the pure luck of the draw. The Bulldogs won a three way coin toss against fellow division co-winners Elizabeth City State and Virginia Union to advance to the CIAA Championship football game.

The coin toss became necessary when Bowie State, Elizabeth City State and Virginia Union all finished regular season play in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Eastern Division with 5-2 conference records and the other established tiebreakers failed to establish a definitive choice.

Bowie State advanced when the coin tossed by interim athletic director Arlene Creek came up tails while coins tossed by counterparts from the other two schools came up heads. By rule of the three-way coin toss procedure, the school whose coin toss came up with a unique outcome won the tie-breaker.

The Bulldogs will meet the Fayetteville State Broncos in the CIAA championship game this Saturday, November 7 at 1 p.m. EST. Regardless of how it gained entry into the title game, Bowie State will come into Durham, N.C. as a formidable squad with a top caliber rushing attack and defense under first-year coach Damon Wilson, a squad with every chance to win the title.______________________

Virginia, Navy fall in final minutes vs. upstart opposition

The Virginia Cavaliers and Navy Midshipmen each held mid 4th quarter leads over upstart opposition only for both teams to be taken apart in the final minutes of play, falling to the Duke Blue Devils and Temple Owls respectively.

Virginia's bowl hopes all but fell apart in its 28-17 loss to Duke. Jameel Sewell had placed the Cavaliers on top, 17-12, with a touchdown pass to Joe Torchia. Duke came back though with a Thaddeus Lewis 42 yard score to Conner Vernon. Virginia's defeat was assured when a late Jameel Sewell fumble was returned back for a Duke touchdown.

Navy established its final lead of the day on a run from quarterback Kriss Proctor. After a Temple field goal though, the Owls would go ahead for good on a 41 yard Bernard Pierce run. Pierce finished with an incredible 267 yards rushing, leading Temple to bowl eligibility for the first time since 1979. Due to its thirteen game schedule, Navy still needs one more win to become bowl eligible as well.

In local FCS games, James Madison upset Delaware, 20-8, while Georgetown took the expected 31-10 thumping at Old Dominion and Howard was stomped 41-6 at Norfolk State. Georgetown is still winless for the 2009 season.______________________

Bowie State loss subjects CIAA title game berth to coin toss

With a chance to advance on the field to the CIAA college football championship game, the Bowie State Bulldogs were instead plagued by penalties and a key fumble in a 14-12 loss at Virginia Union. The loss, combined with Virginia Union's loss vs. Elizabeth City State, leaves the three schools tied atop the CIAA Eastern Division with a coin toss to decide its title game representative.

Virginia Union scored what turned out to be its winning touchdown in the third quarter after Bowie State's Dominique Budd fumbled a punt return on the Bulldogs 4-yard-line. The Spartans Rahoo Walker ran it in three plays later to establish a 14-3 lead.

The Bulldogs narrowed the margin to eight points with a subsequent field goal then scored a touchdown in the last minutes of the 4th quarter off a 2 yard run from Romano Flowers. Quarterback Andre Johnson's pass play for the needed two point conversion failed. A subsequent penalty allowed Virginia Union to run out the final two minutes of game play.

What's left for Bowie State, Elizabeth City State and Virginia Union is an elaborate coin toss procedure to decide which of them will be Fayetteville State's opponent in the CIAA title game. As described by the Richmond Times-Dispatch, all three teams' athletic directors will toss coins simultaneously with the team producing a toss outcome different from the other two declared the winner.

The coin toss will be webstreamed Sunday at 1 p.m. EST via Livestream.______________________

Virginia, Navy headline light slate of area college football

With Virginia Tech and Maryland both off this Saturday, the Virginia Cavaliers and Navy Midshipmen are left to headline a light slate of area college football action. Looking to come back after an embarrassing outing against Georgia Tech, Virginia will host Duke this late afternoon at Scott Stadium. Both teams harbor 2-1 in-conference records and hopes of reaching six total wins for bowl eligibility. (3:30 p.m., ESPN360, WTEM/980)

The Navy Midshipmen and Temple Owls both are on the verge of bowl eligibility, each needing one more win to achieve the feat. Navy's success is no surprise but the Owls are in the midst of a remarkable turnaround, led by freshman running back Bernard Pierce. For the second straight game, Navy is without quarterback Ricky Dobbs. Kriss Proctor will look to steward the Mids to another win. (3:30 p.m., CBSCS, WFED/1500)

Crossland High School cancels remainder of football season

Crossland High School of Prince George's County, Maryland has cancelled the remainder of its 2009 football schedule and dismissed the team coaching staff due to "unsportsmanlike conduct" by the team during and after games. Head coach Eric Knight technically resigned from his position but will remain as school athletic director.

The Gazette reports that last weekend's Potomac/Crossland matchup ended prematurely with the two teams fighting each other, the second straight year a game between the two teams had been stopped in that matter.

The cancellation of Crossland's remaining 2009 games would be an impressive measure of character building and self-sacrifice by the school administration, except for the nicety that both of Crossland's remaining outings were road games. Barring any compensation, Largo and Gwynn Park schools and classes will be the ones to take the financial hits, not anyone at Crossland. That issue needs to be rectified.______________________

WJLA/7 showcases sweeps story on breast cancer self-exams

A series of planned WJLA/7 reports on breast-cancer self examinations starting on tonight's early evening newscast will include explicit footage of the procedure, reports the Washington Post. WJLA's decision is a departure from the usual television practice of cutting away from such full exposures to avoid offending viewer sensibilities.

Some of the reports are timed for the station's 5 p.m. newscast, a time slot with an "Oprah Winfrey Show" lead-in sure to allow for a significant female viewership. Oprah Winfrey's own program has often featured more controversial segments in is own right that wouldn't be suitable for children.

WJLA general manager Bill Lord defended the timing and nature of the upcoming reports, noting that the story was an important one that could help save lives. That assertion raises the question of why did such important, allegedly life saving reports have to wait for the very last weekdays of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The already acknowledged reason is that the reports will air on the first two days of the Nielsen television ratings sweeps period, used by stations to help set advertising rates. It seems that saving lives is only a pressing need for WJLA/7 when its parent Allbritton company can cash in on the process. ______________________

D.C. Armor indoor football 'unlikely' to return to Armory

The D.C. Armor indoor football team is considered unlikely to return to the D.C. Armory for play in 2010, according to a representative of the Washington Convention and Sports Authority. RollCall.com reported the remarks from Erik Moses, senior vice president and managing director of the authority's Sports, Entertainment and Special Events division, as part of a profile article about the D.C. Armory.

The local franchise of the American Indoor Football Association played all of one season in the 10,000 seat Armory before anemic crowds unofficially estimated in the hundreds. The Armor did not report official attendance for most of its home games.

It is not yet known whether the D.C. Armor will attempt to play a 2010 season in another locale or simply be discontinued altogether. No official word on the Armor's 2010 status has yet been released either by the team or the AIFA. Armor representatives remain unreachable for comment.______________________

Dan Snyder clamps down on free speech at FedEx

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has effectively declared war on the free speech and expression of fans at FedExField. After weeks of increasing fan criticism over Snyder's management of the football team, Dan Snyder has responded by restricting the rights of Redskins fans to express such sentiments anywhere on the FedEx Field property.

For Monday night's Redskins game against the Philadelphia Eagles, a rule was enacted on little notice to ban signs and banners at FedExField. D.C. Sports Bog reported that numerous signs and banners were confiscated including at least from a woman greeting her husband who is serving our country in Afghanistan.

FedExField security also cracked down on Redskins fans for non-profane anti-Snyder T-shirts and fan chants without any written rule against the practice. Prince George's County police officers were enlisted to aid in the censorship effort. According to one account aired on WJFK/106.7, at least eight county police officers attempted to force a group of fans wearing Dumb and Dumber T-shirts (in reference to Snyder and Vinny Cerrato) to turn their T-shirts inside out or leave the stadium.

Prince George's County law enforcement officers have a legal responsibility to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States, not the FedEx Thugocracy. Dan Snyder has a moral responsibility to treat the fans who pay money to attend his team's games with dignity and respect. Sadly, we will likely be left instead to await the next Dan Snyder censorship outrage.______________________

Redskins spectacle in Monday Night spotlight vs. Philadelphia

The Washington Redskins' bizarre ride through the 2009 season will be showcased this week on national television, featured on ESPN's Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Buffeted by the whims of a mercurial owner and a subpar executive vice president, beleaguered head coach Jim Zorn has found his play-calling duties taken away from him in favor of Sherman Lewis. The offensive consultant had been in the Redskins fold for all of two weeks before gaining his new assignment.

In fairness, Zorn had little success in his own play-calling. The head coach's immediate job stability had even been in question till last Friday when Vinny Cerrato announced via his own radio show that Zorn would stay through the remainder of the season.

Quarterback Jason Campbell will have to cut through these and more off-field distractions and the likely permanent absence of perennial Pro Bowl tackle Chris Samuels on his blind side. Can the Redskins offense gain some semblance of life against their heated NFL East rivals? Start time is after 8:30 p.m.______________________
