My Cobalt Flux with Bar

2011-09-25T18:06:00.000-05:00

I thought I'd let everyone see a video of my setup. I've had this since April of 2011 and it's been amazing for me.

What do I need to start playing DDR?

2011-05-23T16:19:00.003-05:00

The first thing you need to do is identify which gaming system you want to play on. If you already have a gaming system, such as a PS2, PS3, XBOX, XBOX 360, Wii, etc., then you have the most expensive part taken care of. Now all you need is a Dance Dance Revolution game and a dance pad. Normally, these come bundled together. Bundles can cost as much as $70 but sometimes you can find bundles that are just as good for $20.

However, if you want the best and cheapest DDR option possible, try out Stepmania! This DDR look-a-like plays just like the real game. The only difference is that you play using your computer. All you need to buy is a dance pad. There are no other cost. You can play on your monitor or you can connect your computer to a TV. Stepmania is super easy to set up.

First, download Stepmania from this website. Then run the installation.
Next, find songs to play! Songs are referred to as simfiles. Here at DDR Download Site, we link to the best simfiles possible. Download the simfiles you want and place the entire folder here: "C:\Program Files\StepMania\Songs\Create a folder with the name of a category\".
Start Playing!

Playing on Stepmania using the keyboard is completely free and worth trying out. If you want to buy a dance pad, make sure it has a USB port. Plug it into the computer before starting up Stepmania. Then configure the joypad so the arrows, start and select buttons will work. You can find dance pads with good reviews at places like amazon. Once you set up your dance pad, you'll be completely ready to start playing!

Tips For Choosing Dance Pads

2011-05-02T22:41:00.004-05:00

With all the dance pads available, it can be hard to decide which one is best to buy. After all, there's all kinds of soft pads, foam pads and metal pads to choose from but which one is the best? This article will cover the pros and cons of the different types of dance pads and recommend which brands to get.

-Soft Pads-
I would recommend a soft pad for any beginner or slightly experienced player. A soft pad can cost anywhere from $20 to $30. I have found all of Konami's pads to be very good. You can get one of these pads cheap just by buying a game in a bundle. They work very well on difficulties 1 through 9. I've even been able to pass some boss songs on Konami's pads. If you go for a cheaper brand, the pad will sound very crackly and give C's and D's when you should be getting AA's. This can ruin how well you like the game. Another downfall for the soft pad is that it slides around a lot. This can make it hard to know if you're pressing the arrows correctly or not. Crossovers can also be difficult to pull off on a soft pad.

Soft pads all have the same basic design. There are two layers of conductive material separated by a foam layer with little circles cut out from it. When your foot presses down, the foam smashes and a connection is made between the two conductive layers. This simple design makes the soft pad a cost effective option. The downside is that, over time, the foam becomes flattened permanently and the pad will quit working altogether. I would expect a soft pad to last anywhere from three months to a couple of years depending on the brand.

-Foam Pads-
Foam pads are great for intermediate or very experienced players. They offer serious improvement over soft pads. The sensor design is the same as a soft pad except there is a thick, high density foam insert that zips into the pad. This foam insert helps a lot. The foam makes the pad stiffer so the notes will register more accurately. The stiffness is also beneficial because the pad won't bend around under your feet when you're moving around. This will help improve your game significantly. The foam also weighs down the pad so it won't slide as much but the pad will still slide a little. The sensitivity on the foam pads I've tried have been amazing. I've even been able to score a AAA on one of these pads. Out of all the foam pads out there, I would recommend getting an Energy pad ($50~$70) or a Tough pad ($140~$160). Foam pads have lasted about two years for me under heavy use. After that, they suffer from the same problem with their sensors as soft pads. Other than that, they have really come to earn my respect. Just watch out that you don't buy a cheap brand or it will not work properly.

-Metal Pads-
I would only recommend getting a metal pad if you are truly a dedicated DDR player. Most metal pads only offer slight improvements in scoring over foam pads. Metal pads are less likely to slide around and will last much longer than regular pads. One of my favorite things is you can wear shoes on them. Some metal pads will also offer a bar for you to hold to while playing. This will take off a ton of stress from your legs and allow you to move much faster. The metal pad I would recommend right now is the Cobalt Flux ($300). This pad hardly ever breaks down. I love the Cobalt Flux because it almost always works perfectly. Its sensors work differently than the regular arcade style sensors. The Cobalt Flux uses metal sheets that flex to make a connection which makes this pad very unique. Depending on the pad you get, there are mods you can do to make your pad more responsive. The most responsive pad I've been able to find so far, is the official In The Groove 2 arcade pad. Quality arcade pads cost much more than home pads but are unmatched in performance. The biggest downfall with metal pads is that you will have to clean them frequently. Again, do not get a cheap pad. It will likely have sensor issues within the first year and be a huge waste of money.

How to Make a Simfile

2011-04-15T15:56:00.004-05:00

This tutorial will cover the basic steps to creating a simfile. A simfile is a song with dance steps that can be played in Stepmania.

Setting Up Your Simfile

Choose the song you want. It helps a lot if the song is easier to follow the beat to. Make sure the song is either in MP3 or OGG format. If it is another format, find a free music converter to change it.
Go to "Program Files" and under the Stepmania folder, select Stepmania Tools. This will bring up a window with a few buttons on it.
At the bottom of the window, click "Create Song." Locate where you saved the song you wanted to create and select it. After it has been selected, a simfile will have been made at the following location: "C:\Program Files\StepMania\Songs\My Creations" Under "My Creations, there will be a folder with the name of your song with some files in it. Everything in this folder is what you need for a simfile to work. You are now ready to start adding dance steps to your simfile!

Editing Your Simfile

Open Stepmania.
Go to "Edit/Sync Songs."
Find the folder "My Creations" by scrolling left or right under the "Group" category.
Now find your song by scrolling left or right under "Songs" below.
Next, scroll left and right under "Steps" to select the difficulty you want. Press enter. This will create the difficulty. Then press enter again over "Edit Existing."
Now you should be at the screen for editing steps. Pressing left or right changes what kind of notes you will be inserting. (Ex. 1/4 notes, 1/8 notes, etc.) Pressing up and down changes what beat measure you will be on. Numbers 1 to 4 add or take away arrows. Holding shift and pressing the numbers between 1 to 4 will add bombs.
To change the difficulty meter, press Esc and select "Edit Step Statistics." Change the meter to the number you want.
Press Esc and navigate to "Save" to save your song.
Pressing F1 will give you keyboard shortcuts.

Adding a Banner or Background

For a banner, make an image that is 256x80 or 418x164. Name it "Song Name-banner.png".
For a background, make an image that is 640x480. Name it "Song Name-bg.png".
Place these pictures in the song's folder that you want them to go with.
Go play your simfile!

Gimp and Inkscape are great free tools for making banners and backgrounds.

Expert/Challenge Tips

2011-01-23T18:49:00.007-06:00

On expert and challenge you will need to run much more regularly from arrow to arrow. Start off on slower songs that are around 150 BPM. It's alright if you can only get a D. Just keep playing a few weeks and then take a break for a few weeks. Suddenly, you will come back and that D may turn into a C or a low B. Keep training your brain and continue relearning the step patterns. Soon, you'll be able to step it up to 170 BPM and then 190. Every time you make a breakthrough it feels like you've reached your peak. When you feel like this all you have to do is take another break and then come back. Believe me, you will keep getting better. Physical limitations are the only limits and learning new techniques will help you get beyond these.

-Gallops-

Have you ever seen a stream of arrows that has two of each arrow coming at you but are not spaced evenly together? Likely, these are gallops. The way you handle gallops is by treating them like jumps. The only difference is you let one foot land before the other. Once both feet have landed, use the energy you put on the second foot to spring yourself back up so you can do your next gallop. Once you get this down these notes become very easy. Eventually, you will find gallops integrated into a stream of evenly spaced notes and they will be easy to do.

-Crossovers-

There are some arrow combinations that seem like they're impossible to do by alternating your feet each note. A common example of this is shown here. ← ↑ → Your first instinct is to use the same foot twice in a row on two arrows. This may work at first but it will slow you down on harder songs. The correct technique is to put your left foot on the left arrow. Then put your right foot on the up arrow. Finally, take your left foot and bring it behind you to the right arrow. It kind of leaves you turned around but it is the quickest way to do this combination. With enough practice, doing crossovers becomes very fun to do. DanDanDo on expert is a great official song for learning crossovers. Most other songs just have crossovers thrown in every now and then.

-Heel-Toe-

The final technique to learn is heel-toe. This is important to learn in order to have enough energy for the hardest songs in the game. The whole point of this technique is to save energy and shave off time in between notes. To do this, have both feet covering all the arrows. Two of the arrows will be covered by your toes and two will be covered by your heels. You will be facing diagonally either to the left or right. One foot will always cover the top arrow along with the left or right. The other foot will cover the bottom arrow along with the remaining left or right arrow. Try to stay in the position you are in as long as you can. Only pivot your body when you need to. Remember, the whole point of this is to minimize movement. Another benefit from applying the heel-toe technique is that your stance becomes closer to the center. When you're closer to the center your body stands up straighter. When you stand up straighter you can move faster. Test it out. When you stand with your feet completely on the left and right arrows you feel more spread out. The straighter you are the better. Keep practicing all these techniques and eventually you'll be able to pass any song!

-16th Arrows-

As you get better you will encounter 16th arrows. These are easy to do but can wear you out if you're not in good enough shape. I can jog for miles but a hard DDR song that has a lot of 16th arrows will tire me out almost as much. My tip for this is to simply to get in shape by playing DDR a lot. Once you are able to pull off a stream of these you will really look like you're insane! Not only that but a song that skillfully adds 16th arrows and gallops allows the arrows to flow with the song better which adds personality to it. Once you learn how to do 16th arrows and gallops very smoothly, then you are ready for a boss song! But how do you get from being able to do level 9's to boss songs? This leads to my next tip. Play In The Groove.

-Progressing to Level 10 Songs-

The problem with DDR is that there are hardly any songs to transition you from the average level 9 song to a boss song. Boss songs are way too hard compared to regular songs and there is nothing to get you ready for them. In The Groove is the perfect solution. There are no boss songs in ITG. Almost all the songs in ITG have a difficulty that is almost as hard, if not, as hard as a boss song. The way ITG did the step combinations makes this my favorite version to play on. The creators skillfully added every technique to make it the most fun playing experience. If you want to buy ITG, you can find it used very cheap off of amazon or similar web sites.

Difficult/Standard Tips

2011-01-23T18:48:00.004-06:00

Is basic too easy for you? Are you ready to take it to the next level? These tips will help you get to that next step! Now that you can fluently comprehend the arrows at a steady beat and are not returning to the center of the pad, you are ready for difficult or standard level. Difficult will make you apply techniques from harder difficulties every now and then. Because these techniques don't show up very much in difficult, they will be posted in the expert/challenge tips. Feel free to check them out.

The biggest difference with difficult/standard is that now you will have to step on notes during half beats. This will make you look like you're running on the pad. Try to alternate your feet between every arrow. Never return to the center. Learning more advanced techniques will help you do this. The biggest thing at this point is to keep practicing.

Beginner/Basic Tips

2011-01-23T18:43:00.000-06:00

There's not much you need to know to do beginner songs. On most songs you can hear the beat fairly easy. Simply dance to the beat. You don't have to worry about timing. Just remember to step on the notes on the beat. On beginner, you'll have a note about every other beat. On basic, you'll have a note once every beat.

-Avoid the Center-

This is just a tip for later. Try not to step on the center of the pat. All beginners seem to want to return to the center every time they hit a note. This will slow you down drastically. Rather, you should step and leave your foot on a note. This won't hurt your score. By not bringing your feet back to the center you use less energy and can get from note to note quicker. To explain this better, if you have a left, up, down, right sequence you put your left foot on the left arrow and leave it there. Then bring your right foot to the up arrow and leave it there. Now take your left foot off the left arrow and bring it to the down arrow and leave it there. Now finish by taking your right foot and bringing it from the up arrow to the right arrow. This will make it look like you're walking from note to note. This walk can eventually turn into a run. By learning this technique early you won't have any bottlenecks keeping you from getting better.

General Tips

2011-01-23T18:42:00.002-06:00

-Keep Relearning!-

When I took my first steps on a DDR pad I was terrible at it. So don't feel bad if you have trouble at first. I remember seeing the pros on the Internet and I thought to myself "I'll never be that good." Don't give up! My first tip is to play the game a lot for about a week to a month or so. During this time you might get a little better. Here's the important part! Completely stop playing for 2 weeks to a month and then come back to playing it. I can't stress doing this enough. When you come back to the game at first you'll seem a little rusty at it. Every time you relearn something you'll be better at it than you were before. This means that after you overcome your rustiness you'll make a big leap in what you can comprehend. Songs that were to hard to comprehend will suddenly be much easier. It's kind of like once school is over during summer break. At the end of the previous year the students are at their best. At this point its more difficult to help students to learn as fast as they did at the beginning. Once they come back to school the next year they may be a little rusty but after they get back into the groove of things they are more fluent readers and better at everything than they were before. This is the beauty of the human brain. Every time you relearn something you remember it better than you did the first time. So don't give up!

-Learning to Comprehend the Arrows-

One of the biggest things I discovered that was holding me back was my stiffness due to my inability to comprehend the arrows. As you get used to the arrow combinations you loosen up a lot. The better you get, the less you have to think about the notes. People often ask, "How do you understand all those notes there!" Really, I don't have to think about them one bit. It just comes second nature. When you get to this point, then your locked up arms and robotic legs smoothly glide from arrow to arrow. It's kind of like learning to read. At first, you read slow and focus on every letter of each word. Then you don't have to think about the letters as much and you focus more on each of the words. Eventually, you read fluently and can possibly guess what's coming up next. DDR is the same way. At first, you focus on each individual note. Then you focus on combinations of patterns. Then, you get so good, you don't have to think about what your doing one bit and everything you see in your peripheral vision is all you need to know. Just try to relax when playing. Make sure you're not holding your breath. Sometimes it's difficult to relax but if you don't you'll tire yourself out and end up failing. Just remember, the less you have to think, the better!

In The Groove, to me, is the best dancing game ever created. It has a much higher difficulty than Dance Dance Revolution. Challenge mode on many songs was much harder than some boss songs in DDR. There are bombs in ITG and many more quarter notes which make many songs a lot more fun and interesting.

Cobalt Flux Review

2010-12-26T19:10:00.027-06:00

*Feel free to post questions in the comments section.

There comes a point when you start to question whether you should stay with your old foam pad or upgrade to a metal pad. When my foam pad finally died off, I did a lot of research looking for what the best metal pads were. I was checking reviews and comparing the pros and cons. The answer I came to after reading many comments and reviews was that the best metal pads were the Cobalt Flux and Blue Shark. Since Blue Shark wasn't sold anymore I bought a Cobalt Flux. I couldn't have been more excited! After seeing what the pros could do I had to have one. Now that I've had time to use it I want to share my experiences with you.

At first, I just ordered the Cobalt Flux with no mod. Normally, when I played on pads that were flush, I'd have no problem telling where I was. When soft pads moved out of place, I could get away with only pressing the arrow along the very edge. Something seemed a little different with this pad. The Cobalt Flux's design is all based around flexing the metal sheet to touch the metal under it. This means that only a circular range in the center of the arrow will touch the metal and make a connection. If the pad moves from its original position and you accidentally step on the edge of the arrow, the sheet won't flex enough and it won't make a connection. You need to be much more accurate about where you step. When I stepped on an arrow accurately it always sensed it but if I was too far off it would register a bad score. It's kind of like an all or nothing sort of deal.

-Making the Cobalt Flux Carpet Friendly-
To fix the problem of it moving I addressed the Cobalt Flux's weakness, carpet. I bought a plastic mat with spikes under it to lay over the carpet. Then I bought some rubber to lay on top of that. Now the flux was staying in place perfectly! This improved my scores significantly. I was able to score a AAA on an expert song. On In The Groove, I was finally able to keep a combo going between songs without the pad messing up. I was so excited with how well it was working.

-Clean Regularly-

After about a week of playing it heavily I noticed it wasn't responding as well as what it once was. I unscrewed the four panels and couldn't believed how dirty it had gotten. When I wiped it with a moistened rag, the rag became filthy. Once I cleaned the contact area thoroughly, I screwed the panels back in. The flux was working as good as new! I found that when I played it a lot, I would need to clean it about every week or two in order for it to work perfectly. It will work with less cleaning but it will judge inaccurately more often. One time, I had a little sand on my shoe and it came off under the panels. This was really annoying because it would make a loud cracking noise every time I stepped on a panel. If you get a flux, expect to clean it regularly.

-Making the Pad More Sensitive-
I didn't like how squishy the panels felt. I heard that doing a penny mod made it feel more solid and more sensitive. I didn't want to risk denting my new pad so I came up with a new solution. I had a friend give me some scrap sheets of metal to put under each panel. These sheets are 14 gauge. They couldn't have fit more perfect. It left the smallest gap possible but worked perfectly. I taped each sheet around the edge so they wouldn't move. Now I'm able to play without having to press as hard or in the center of the arrow as closely. It also seems like I don't have to clean the pad as much either. This is one mod I wouldn't want to play without.

-Black and Textured Arcade Mod Kit-
After awhile, I wanted to see if it would make a difference if I added an arcade mod. I ended up choosing the black and textured arcade mod kit. The four black panels they sent in were three times thicker than the regular panels. The clear center panel they sent in was short like the original center panel. I solved that problem by stacking three clear panels together in the center. They also sent four metal bars to place between the center panel and the corner panels. I could tell a little difference with where I was on the pad but not as much as I hoped for. This will help you be more prepared for the real arcade pads. I used to slide my feet on my old pad all the time without hardly lifting them up. This forced me to try harder by making me lift my foot more to get over the elevated buttons. If you drag your feet similar to how you can with a soft pad, you'll catch your feet on the elevated buttons and trip. It feels different than the arcade pads. I never had any problems with tripping on those. After I got good at playing with the mod kit on, I decided to take it off to see if I would do better with the pad flush. I was able to get a better score than what I could with the mod kit on. Overall, I feel sort of neutral about the black and textured mod kit. I don't feel disappointed buying it but I like the pad better the way it originally was.

The biggest advantage the Cobalt Flux has over any pad is durability. I don't see how you could break this thing. The way it works now is how it will work years from now. This makes the Cobalt Flux the best investment pad because once you get one I don't see why you would ever need to get another pad again. I think if anything goes wrong, it would probably be with the control box. Overall, it's a great pad. I like it better than any pad I've ever owned before. This is the perfect balance between sensitivity and durability. If you want a complete arcade feel, I would buy a different pad. Aside from that, it works very well and I would recommend getting it. Click on the link below if you would like to purchase one.

Energy Pad Review

2010-12-19T17:22:00.007-06:00

*Please post any questions you have in the comments below.

Over the years, I have had my encounters with many different dance pads. Some of them were amazingly accurate while some were amazingly crappy. There comes a point when you have to give up playing on your official Konami soft pad and upgrade to a more usable pad. But with all the third party pads out there what would be a reliable pad to go to?

After doing a lot of research, my friend decided to get an Energy foam pad. It has three plug-ins for the PC, X-Box and PS2. Coming out of the box, the foam looked like puzzle pieces that came together. We put them together, zipped it up and tried it out. We couldn't have been more happy. We spent the rest of the night using it. I loved how solid it felt compared to the soft pad. It made it much easier to move from note to note. It moved a little on the ground but stayed in place better than the soft pad. Not only that but our scores made an improvement as well. The notes rarely registered wrong or early. This pad worked so well that another friend decided to get the same pad and bought me one as a gift. These pads were amazing! For the first time, I started to beat boss songs that would of been very difficult to beat otherwise because of the inaccuracies of other pads. They worked perfect for about a year of heavy use and then they started to see some age.

After about a year, the pads would go through phases of working well and not working well. My first friend's pad started to have all of the elevated notes shift to the center. The arrows still worked very well but it felt like you were in a different spot than what you were. My pad started to develop tears on its surface. I patched these with tape so they wouldn't rip more. The final pad took the longest to see some wear. Eventually, it started to rip in one spot. They still worked really well considering the amount of use they received. We played on them until we had to concede. A tear finally developed on an inside layer of my pad and cut a connection. That's when I had to throw mine away. Altogether, two of them lasted for two years while the other lasted for two and a half years.

After throwing them away, we went through a period of mourning. After a while, we just couldn't take it! I upgraded to a cobalt flux while my friend got another energy foam pad! Unlike any other foam pad before, I was able to get my first AAA on an expert song. Right out of the box, its accuracy was right with the flux. Long story short, this is by far my favorite foam pad! Their accuracy is right on time and they really compete well with metal pads. The only downfalls are you may have to replace them every two to three years if you use them a lot and they slip a little. On the other hand, they are much less pricy than a metal pad, so they may be worth it. If you'd like to read other people's reviews or purchase one of these pads, please visit the link below.

Dance Dance Revolution DDR Max

What is DDR Download Site?

2010-12-18T19:47:00.004-06:00

As a DDR enthusiast myself, I have spent hours on end searching for the best songs available. In order to find the best songs I have spent many more hours filtering through much lower quality step charts. This site exists so that you won't have to deal with the hassle of finding the best songs. I'll try my best to keep the site updated with my favorite songs each week. Remember, this is an opinion site. You can help by submitting your favorite songs here. I hope this saves you time from searching so you can spend more time playing. Happy dancing!
