Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (27 February 1863 – 10 August 1923) was a Valencian Spanish painter. Sorolla excelled in the painting of portraits, landscapes, and monumental works of social and historical themes.

Pyotr Konchalovsky (21 February 1876 - 02 February 1956) was a Russian painter, a member of Jack of Diamonds group.
In 1880 Petr Konchalovsky enters Kharkov private school of Raevskaia and studies drawing there. At the same time he gets acquainted with artist Levchenko, visits his studio and tries to work with paints.
After arrival to Moscow in 1889 he continues studying painting and drawing in the evening classes at V.D.Suhov in Central Stroganov School of Technical Drawing.

The artist more and more interests in the impressionists painting and after the termination of studying in the summer of 1907, writes a number of etudes in the impressionism manner.

Since 1909, he exhibited frequently, participating in the Golden Fleece, Fraternity, Mir Iskusstva, and New Society of Artists. He was a founding member of the society Jack of Diamonds in 1909. The group included Robert Falk, Aristarkh Lentulov, Ilya Mashkov, Alexander V. Kuprin, Alexander Osmerkin, Wladimir Burliuk, Pyotr Konchalovsky and Moisey Feigin.

Albert Bierstadt (January 7, 1830 – February 18, 1902) was a German-American painter.
Bierstadt was part of the Hudson River School, not an institution but rather an informal group of like-minded painters. The Hudson River School style involved carefully detailed paintings with romantic, almost glowing lighting, sometimes called luminism.

Hans Gillisz. Bollongier or Boulenger (1600 – 1645) was a Dutch Golden Age still life flower painter. He was a specialist in bouquets of blooms
Paintings attributed to him that are not flower- or fruit still lifes are likely the work of his brother Horatio.
Bollongier's work reveals little contemporary influence. Compared to other painters of floral still-lifes, he employed loose, forceful brushstrokes. His paintings also feature a powerful contrast between dark and light.

His work today is considered part of the proof that Tulip Mania took place, although there is reason to believe that this is also just part of early Haarlem tourist propaganda. Even as early as the 17th century, gentry from Amsterdam, Leiden, and places farther away enjoyed visiting the tulip fields of Haarlem in the Spring, and paintings of tulips were as popular as the bulbs.

Paul Gustav Fischer (22 July 1860, Copenhagen – 1 May 1934 Gentofte) was a Danish painter.

His formal art education lasted only a short time in his mid teens when he spent two years at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen.

Fischer began to paint when he was still young, guided by his father. His earlier paintings depict city life. After a stay in Paris from 1891–1895, his colours became richer and lighter. It was not long before Fischer gained fame as a painter of cities, not just Copenhagen, but scenes from Scandinavia, Italy and Germany, reaching his zenith between 1890 and 1910.

Joseph Wright was born into a middle-class professional Derby family on 3 September 1734. His father, John, was an attorney and town clerk in Derby. Wright's formal artistic training began in 1751, when he became a pupil of the portraitist Thomas Hudson (1701-1779) in London. After two years, Wright returned to Derby, but in 1756-57 was back with Hudson in London for an additional period of instruction. In 1757 he moved back to his native city and quickly gained a local reputation as a portraitist. Wright first exhibited at the London Society of Artists in 1765. Among his earliest successes were dramatically candlelit scenes of modern scientific subjects: Philosopher Giving a Lecture on the Orrery (1766; Derby Art Gallery) and Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump (1768; London, The National Gallery) are still two of the artist's best-known paintings. His earliest known pure landscape paintings date from about 1772.
Wright spent most of his life in Derby, except for stints in Liverpool (1768-71) and Bath (1775-77), and a visit to Italy in 1773-75. The Italian journey had a profound effect on his choice of subject matter, most specifically in fiery views of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius (of which he painted more than thirty), and dramatic Mediterranean grottos. Wright continued to paint until about 1796. He died in Derby on 29 August 1797.
Wright was a versatile and often unconventional painter, producing portraits, history paintings, modern scientific subjects, and landscapes. His works demonstrate a profound preoccupation with the effects of light: pictures of smithies and forges, volcanic eruptions, views of moonlight or dramatic clouds. For most of his working life the artist kept an account book (London, National Portrait Gallery), which records pictures, patrons, and prices. Many of his compositions were disseminated through reproductive mezzotints and engravings.

Henri Fantin-Latour (14 January 1836 – 25 August 1904) was a French
painter and lithographer best known for his flower paintings and group portraits of Parisian artists.
Marcel Proust mentions Fantin-Latour's work in In Search of Lost Time.
He studied first with his father, a pastel painter, and then at the drawing school of [Horace] Lecoq de Boisbaudran, and later under Couture. He was the friend of Ingres, Delacroix, Corot, Courbet and others. He exhibited in the Salon of 1861, and many of his more important canvases appeared on its walls in later years, though 1863 found him with Manet, Legros and Whistler in the Salon des Refuses. Whistler introduced him to English artistic circles, and he lived for some time in England, many of his portraits and flower pieces being in English galleries.

Édouard Manet 23 January 1832 – 30 April 1883) was a French painter. One of the first 19th-century artists to approach modern and postmodern-life subjects, he was a pivotal figure in the transition from Realism to Impressionism.
His work is considered 'early modern', partially because of the black outlining of figures, which draws attention to the surface of the picture plane and the material quality of paint.

Vincent Willem van Gogh (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work, notable for its rough beauty, emotional honesty and bold color, had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art.

Van Gogh began to draw as a child, and he continued to draw throughout the years that led up to his decision to become an artist. He did not begin painting until his late twenties, completing many of his best-known works during the last two years of his life. In just over a decade, he produced more than 2,100 artworks, consisting of 860 oil paintings and more than 1,300 watercolors, drawings, sketches and prints. His work included self portraits, landscapes, still lifes, portraits and paintings of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers.

Starry Night - Drawing (pen, brush and ink)

Starry Night was painted while Vincent was in the asylum at Saint-Rémy and his behaviour was very erratic at the time, due to the severity of his attacks. Unlike most of Van Gogh's works, Starry Night was painted from memory and not outdoors as was Vincent's preference. This may, in part, explain why the emotional impact of the work is so much more powerful than many of Van Gogh's other works from the same period.

In August, 1888 Vincent van Gogh began painting a series of works which, as Dr. Jan Hulsker suggests "perhaps more than any other of his paintings, have made him known throughout the world. They are often the only works with which he is identified." This series is, of course, the sunflowers.

"I’m thinking of decorating my studio with half a dozen paintings of Sunflowers. Sorts of effects of stained-glass windows of a Gothic church."

During his lifetime Van Gogh was never famous as a painter and struggled to make a living as an artist. Van Gogh only sold one painting during his lifetime The Red Vineyard. This painting sold in Brussels for 400 Francs only a few months before his death.

Vincent van Gogh died at the age of 37 bringing his career as a painter to an end, but beginning his legacy as the great painter of the future who inspired the world.

James Brereton (born 1954) is a specialist in marine painting. His paintings show a meticulous attention to detail in his portrayal of sailing ships and boats alongside beautiful seascapes and sunsets. James Brereton was born in Derby and studied at the Joseph Wright School in Derby. He decided to concentrate on marine painting at a young age, becoming a professional artist in 1979. His main influences are Thomas Somerscales, Montague Dawson and Charles Dixon. He has exhibited widely in England, including the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London.

Naturally you can disagree with the painter’s point of view, but an instinct prompts us to agree — we feel unable to be indifferent to Adamov’s painting.

Nicolae Grigorescu ( May 15, 1838 – July 21, 1907) was one of the founders of modern Romanian painting.

Ion Andreescu (15 February 1850 – 22 October 1882) was a Romanian painter of great renown.

Influenced by Nicolae Grigorescu, he left Romania for Paris to further his education. In Paris, he began painting at Barbizon. His work was exhibited with the works of better known painters such as Manet, Monet and Renoir.

Vasily Dmitrievich Polenov (Russian: Васи́лий Дми́триевич Поле́нов; 1 June 1844 – 18 July 1927) was a Russian landscape painter associated with the Peredvizhniki movement of realist artists.

His works won the admiration of Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, who acquired many of them for his gallery.

In the late 1870s, Polenov concentrated on painting landscapes in the realist tradition of Aleksey Savrasov and Fyodor Vasilyev. He attempted to impart the silent poetry of Russian nature, related to daily human life.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841–1919) was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. As a celebrator of beauty, and especially feminine sensuality, it has been said that "Renoir is the final representative of a tradition which runs directly from Rubens to Watteau."

In 1874, Renoir participated in the first Impressionist exhibition, along with Monet, Edgar Degas, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro, and Berthe Morisot. His works included The Opera Box (1874), a painting which shows the artist's penchant for rich and freely handled figurative expression. Of all the Impressionists, Renoir most consistently and thoroughly adapted the new style-in its inspiration, essentially a landscape style-to the great tradition of figure painting.

Alfred Sisley (30 October 1839 – 29 January 1899) was an Impressionist landscape painter who was born and spent most of his life in France.

Described by art historian Robert Rosenblum as having "almost a generic character, an impersonal textbook idea of a perfect Impressionist painting", his work strongly invokes atmosphere, and his skies are always impressive. He concentrated on landscape more consistently than any other Impressionist painter.

John Constable (11 June 1776 – 31 March 1837) was an English Romantic painter. Born in Suffolk, he is known principally for his landscape paintings of Dedham Vale, the area surrounding his home—now known as "Constable Country"

His most famous paintings include Dedham Vale of 1802 and The Hay Wain of 1821.

Constable's watercolors were also remarkably free for their time: the almost mystical Stonehenge, 1835, with its double rainbow, is often considered to be one of the greatest watercolours ever painted.

Ivan Aivazovsky (July 29, 1817 – May 5, 1900) was an Armenian-Russian world-renowned painter living and working in Crimea, most famous for his seascapes, which constitute more than half of his paintings. He gained international fame at the age of 25, was elected a member to five European Academies and was awarded the medal of the French Legion of Honor. Joseph Mallord WilliamTurner was a British Romantic landscape painter, water-colourist, and printmaker. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. Although renowned for his oil paintings, Turner is also one of the greatest masters of British watercolour landscape painting.
