Rainy? Happy!

It's 10 o'clock in the morning, the skies are in an endless state of showers, with nothing much to do, I thought, "why not think of the alternative things to do here at home, with what I have?" I, then started to think of coming up with a list on how to best spend my day without catching a cold and spending a centavo, having to rely on available resources without leaving the comforts of our home.

First priority would be, of course, sustinence. Good thing I dropped by the local super market and got some happy junkies. Would this be enough? Hopefully.

Snacku - A super tasty rice crackers overly sprinkled with what their company claims to be healthy vegetable poweder. Personally, I wouldn't care less, the taste is uniquely satisfying!

My first taste of this charming snack was way back in the 90's and somehow it hid somewhere and then recently made a relieving comeback. (Thank you Regent!)

Piattos - This thin octagon-shaped chip just so happen to bring delight to my taste buds like anytime of the day, rain or shine. Best flavor for me is roast beef. And just a tip, it's nice to pair it up with just about any sandwich that you can fix from what you can find from your cupboard and fridge.

Ferrero Rocher - The wonders of this chocolate is just out of this world! The chocolates consist of a whole roasted hazelnut encased in a thin wafer shell filled with hazelnut cream and covered in milk chocolate and chopped hazelnuts. Even though it's "pricy", it's just so worth it! (Thanks Manang Nellie Ann!)

Nissin Ramen Sea Food - "Basta noodles, Nissin!" Before, I wasn't into noodle soup but when I went to Japan and tried the famous ramen, I thought, I just have to find the best alternative when I get back home without declaring bankrupcy due to overpricing. The best I got then is Nissin Ramen Sea Food, ( for only P10.00 per pack.)

This package is also very convenient to prepare. Imagine, just pour hot water and leave it for 5 minutes and voila! Oishii!

Kopiccino - With this one, I have to thank my daughter Nadine for the introduction. At P8.00, you get a creamy cappuccino with fun choco sprinkles! Why not? And the best part is you don't need any high tech gadget to prepare it. Talk about a laid back afternoon!

Kopiccino is manufactured in Thailand and is distributed here by the Kopiko group. I tell ya, this is fun coffee!

And since the whole family is on "idle mode", the only way to keep all of us entertained is watch movies, movies and movies. Here are the top 5 on my list...

Safe House - It stars Denzel Washington (who also produced it) and Ryan Reynolds. A young CIA agent is tasked with looking after a fugitive in a safe house. But when the safe house is attacked, he finds himself on the run with his charge. Fight scenes are realistically impressive.

The Journey 2: The Mysterious Island - Sean Anderson (Josh Hutcherson) partners with his mom's husband (Dwayne Johnson) on a mission to find his grandfather (Michael Caine), who is thought to be missing on a mythical island. Cassie and I loved the part when they actually carried an elephant. If this mammal is only a handful, then we want one. :D

Mirror Mirror - This is my favorite because Julia Roberts, as the wicked queen is just adorable. I just can't stay irritated by her bratty sarcasm. And also this movie had a different twist wherein Snow White does not get poised anymore. Who says princesses should stay naive and "diabetically" sweet?

J. Edgar - J. Edgar Hoover, powerful head of the FBI for nearly 50 years, looks back on his professional and personal life. Directed by Clint Eastwood and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as J Edgar. The movie gets interesting 'til the end. It's definitely worth watching.

Safe - Mei, a young girl whose memory holds a priceless numerical code, finds herself pursued by the Triads, the Russian mob, and corrupt NYC cops. Coming to her aid is an ex-cage fighter whose life was destroyed by the gangsters on Mei's trail. Who else would best fit the ex-cage fighter but Jason Statham. A surely Must See!

After all these thinking, the shower became very few drizzles. Enough to leave the house and do some walking yet I am so not into it. Heavy rain or not? This is what I'm doing today!

I woke up rather early today and found one of the greatest gifts I have ever gotten in my life. Nadine, my eldest daughter, posted on my facebook page, their gift to me for Mother's Day. Tears ran down my face as I try to reminisce with every photo of the slideshow because I never thought any of those moments would also be meaningful to them as much as it were for me.

Being the coolest mom (in Nadine's point of view), is priceless for I know that I only raised them on ways I know how. I started wondering which part I'm cool at. Is it because I still dig their music genres? Or is it because I cook a mean adobo? I don't exactly have any idea of what their criteria is but nevertheless, I am grateful that they see my parenting skills that way.

I became a mother at 18 with so little knowledge and extremely unprepared. But despite of it all, I bravely fought my fear of being unfit and tried my hardest to be a good one. I would stumble from time to time yet I never thought of stopping to do things right.

By 30, I had another blessing, this time, with every bit of intention to make things work to the best of my capacity.

With two children at hand, I would still fall to the ground and falter. But miraculously, I would get back on my feet, as if nothing happened.

Nadine and Cassie have always been my strength and even if I would get lost along the way, they are just there, waiting for me to make up to them.

I know I'm still full of imperfections but God knows I try my hardest.

To my children, Nadine and Cassie, always remember that I only want the best for both of you. I've seen how cruel life could be as a result of my mistakes and I never want to see anyone of you have a taste of it. I hope you both understand why I would sometimes be overly strict. Please learn from me and my mistakes, my sweet angels.

Keep in mind that as long as I am breathing, I will be beside you both.

I love you both so much and thank you for remembering me on this special day.

Are We Ready for K-12?

Everybody seems to talk about the latest buzz about K-12. What is this program of the government and how will it impact me as a parent of a child that would be affected by this? What good will it do to my kid?

I did a little research online about this matter in order to achieve a better understanding of this program.

Simplifying K-12

The K-12 model involves Kindergarten, six years of elementary education, four years of junior high school (Grades 7 to 10) and two years of senior high school (Grades 11 to 12). The two years of senior high school intend to provide students time to consolidate acquired academic skills and competencies relevant to the job market.

Through two additional years in senior high, DepEd aims to provide students with specialized training in their area of interest, whether they hope to work after high school or pursue college or vocational training.

The K-12 program seeks to level Philippine education with the rest of the world, with 12 years of basic schooling a global standard. Only the Philippines, Angola and Djibouti continue to have a 10-year basic education cycle.

Although K-12 is yet to be given the passage of legislation, DepEd Assistant Secretary for Programs and Projects Elena Ruiz is quite confident that this will be implemented. (It just means "It's A Go Sago!)

Now, what else do we need to think about. I saw an article by Isagani Cruz discussing the pros and cons of this program. (See http://mlephil.wordpress.com/2010/10/14/pros-cons-of-the-k12-debate/)

The PROS (which is basically the side of the government, well-heeled and articulate leaders from the academe, the business community and the media):

“Enhancing the quality of basic education in the Philippines is urgent and critical.”
“The poor quality of basic education is reflected in the low achievement scores of Filipino students. One reason is that students do not get adequate instructional time or time on task.”
International test results consistently show Filipino students lagging way behind practically everybody else in the world. In the 2008 mathematics exam, for example, we came in dead last.
“The congested curriculum partly explains the present state of education.” Twelve years of content are crammed into ten years.
“This quality of education is reflected in the inadequate preparation of high school graduates for the world of work or entrepreneurship or higher education.” If ten years were adequate, how come employers do not hire fresh high school graduates? How come most high school graduates flunk the UPCAT?
“Most graduates are too young to enter the labor force.” Since most children start Grade 1 when they are 6 years old, they do not reach the legal employable age of 18 when they graduate from high school today.
“The current system also reinforces the misperception that basic education is just a preparatory step for higher education.” Why prioritize the minority of high school graduates that go to college?
“The short duration of the basic education program also puts the millions of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), especially the professionals, and those who intend to study abroad, at a disadvantage. Our graduates are not automatically recognized as professionals abroad.” The best examples are our engineering graduates, who are condemned to international jobs not befitting their professional status due to our not having a 12-year basic education cycle.
“The short basic education program affects the human development of the Filipino children.” If we believe that 17-year-old high school graduates are emotionally, psychologically, and intellectually mature, why do we require them to get parental consent before they get married?

The CONS (which are basically the madlang people whose pocketbooks would be adversely impacted by the proposed additional 2 years of basic education):

Parents have to shell out more money (for transportation and food) for the education of their children.
The government does not have the money to pay for two more years of free education, since it does not even have the money to fully support today’s ten years. DepEd must first solve the lack of classrooms, furniture and equipment, qualified teachers, and error-free textbooks.
We can do in ten years what everyone else in the world takes 12 years to do. Why do we have to follow what the rest of the world is doing? We are better than all of them. Filipinos right now are accepted in prestigious graduate schools in the world, even with only ten years of basic education.
As far as the curriculum is concerned, DepEd should fix the current subjects instead of adding new ones. The problem is the content, not the length, of basic education. As an editorial put it, we need to have better education, not more education.
A high school diploma will not get anybody anywhere, because business firms will not hire fresh high school graduates.
Every family dreams of having a child graduate from college.
While students are stuck in Grades 11 and 12, colleges and universities will have no freshmen for two years. This will spell financial disaster for many private Higher Education Institutions (HEIs).
The drop-out rate will increase because of the two extra years.

Both seem to present issues worth discussing but the way I see it, as a parent who does not have much of a choice once this law is passed, I will have to see what I can do for my child's smooth transition.

K-12 promises better quality education coupled with high tech error-free tablets to replace textbooks in order to ensure accuracy of information to be disseminated to the students. (I think this will motivate our students not because of the correct information thing but rather the fact that at last, they can use high tech gadgets without having to buy them. I would imagine them being so overjoyed because "Tigas na ang school materials ba, high tech!) I am not sure however as to how these children can take care of these tablets, long enough to maximize its shelf life.

With the 10 year basic education, we already lack classrooms and worse, more or less 20%-30% of the existing classrooms in every public school are dilapidated that during PTA meetings, we are constantly being pleaded by the advisers to do something to keep the roof from falling. Frankly speaking (as a law-abiding, tax-paying citizen), it's not our job, it's the government's. If they can hardly maintain these fixtures, how can they add more rooms, etc to accommodate more students? (I believe we've always had the budget but we are just dominated by crocs. Sad but true.)

The government believes that with K-12, graduates will have better chances of landing jobs. I could still see a high rate of unemployed college graduates who continue to search for work while others have jobs that are completely unrelated to their courses. I hope this promise is not wishful thinking.

Goodbye Anger!

Have you ever been to a point of being angry enough to lose the cool? What I mean is something like wanting to strangle a person for stating the obvious or probably because you just woke up on the wrong side of the bed pushing you to be irrational for the next 24 hours? Too bad I'm one of them.

I can't say it's with the genes since my dad was also hot tempered but regardless to its origin, I don't see anything right about it. So I am taking an effort to correct this attitude to make my life way better.

As I googled for articles about anger management, I came across a write up of the American Psychological Association. I was glad that the article wasn't too technically written and in lay man's terms for everyone's better comprehension.

The basic anger release is expressing, suppressing and then calming.

* Expressing is not being aggressive but rather, assertive. Because in the first place only you can identify what it is you want to happen to avoid conflict. Unexpressed anger usually is the more dangerous one because the problem will never be resolved since it's never discussed, getting back at people indirectly, without telling them why, rather than confronting them head-on. I have to admit, I belong to this category which could actually kill meaningful relationships.

* Suppressing is mainly holding on your anger and diverting your attention into something positive. Too bad if you are surrounded with a chaotic environment that you just have to look deeper into yourself to find your "happy place".

* Calming refers not only to the external behavior but it also compliments the internal behavior of your body such as a steady blood pressure to soothe your way to the process.

Charles Spielberger, PhD, a psychologist who specializes in the study of anger, if all these fails then someone—or something is going to get hurt.

Here's the Best part of the article. It discusses about the different ways to keep anger in a manageable level.

* Relaxation - Breathe deeply, from your diaphragm; breathing from your chest won't relax you. Picture your breath coming up from your "gut."

* Cognitive Restructuring - Logic defeats anger, because anger, even when it's justified, can quickly become irrational. So use cold hard logic on yourself. Remind yourself that the world is "not out to get you," you're just experiencing some of the rough spots of daily life.

* Problem Solving - Make a plan, and check your progress along the way. Resolve to give it your best, but also not to punish yourself if an answer doesn't come right away. If you can approach it with your best intentions and efforts and make a serious attempt to face it head-on, you will be less likely to lose patience and fall into all-or-nothing thinking, even if the problem does not get solved right away.

* Better Communication - It's natural to get defensive when you're criticized, but don't fight back. Instead, listen to what's underlying the words: the message that this person might feel neglected and unloved. It may take a lot of patient questioning on your part, and it may require some breathing space, but don't let your anger—or a partner's—let a discussion spin out of control. Keeping your cool can keep the situation from becoming a disastrous one.

* Using Humor - Anger is a serious emotion, but it's often accompanied by ideas that, if examined, can make you laugh.

* Changing Your Environment - Sometimes it's our immediate surroundings that give us cause for irritation and fury. Problems and responsibilities can weigh on you and make you feel angry at the "trap" you seem to have fallen into and all the people and things that form that trap.

Give yourself a break. Make sure you have some "personal time" scheduled for times of the day that you know are particularly stressful.

With all these alternatives, no one could say, "I didn't have a choice!"

A Movie Worth Watching (Again!)

Last night, while browsing on my collection of ignored dvd's, I came across a movie that I haven't watched for like 7 years and to my surprise, it was still working. I didn't even realized then that it was a Lenten season presentation, just fit for the coming Holy Week. The movie was the only Robin Padilla one that I have and it costars Johnny Delgado, Rufa Mae Quinto and directed by Mark Meily.

La Visa Loca is about a Jess, played by Robin Padilla, who has been aiming to get a US Visa in order to be with his fiance but failed to pass in the interview. The whole concept of the movie is the protagonist's perseverance to find ways just to get a visa up to the point that he lets himself be a "Kristo", the one to be nailed on the cross.

One may find the movie light-surfaced but beneath it all, I know for one that a lot of Filipinos would smile and somehow relate to one of the characters. Like Johnny Delgado's character for instance. He plays the stubborn father of Robin who lied of his wife's true state in order to hide the fact that she abandoned them to live with an American just to live her dream.

Evangeline Pascual, who plays Robin's mother, showed a common obnoxious attitude of a Filipina that happens to curse Filipinos like she isn't one, now that she is tied up with an American. I've seen this in real life. Seeing those who marry foreigners who just forgot where they came from can sometimes give me chills.

Various scenes made me end up with a grin on my face, like the one at a strip club where the establishment did not serve red meat because it's Holy Week as the strippers go on with their show like they would do every night.

Scenes at the US embassy although a bit exaggerated, were also fun to watch. Like one interviewee who said that he wants to go to the US to see snow but his destination is Hawaii. I laughed hard on this because I know this would happen if the applicant was not properly briefed by his or her travel agent. I've been interviewed once and I can say that the shrugged shoulders were a normal sight for those who got denied while to those who made it, either they would jump for joy or brag of their victory outside the embassy.

All in all, Thumbs up to La Visa Loca. A movie worth watching over and over again. Thank God I found the dvd!

"SUMMER FEVER"

The Heat is on! School ends in a couple of days and I am just so excited to think of all the things I can do with Cassie! I bet she is ecstatic as I am to have all the free time. Besides I am pretty sure that her granny also has activities for her like joining the annual Daily Vacation Bible School and perhaps even tutoring. So I will have to set activities for her.

1. General Cleaning. Of course, with Cassie's hectic schedule at school, her things are tossed aside like crazy. So, in order for us to have a murmur-free summer from granny, we have to make sure that everything's back in place before starting our "Summer Fever". An ice pop would definitely perk up a tired Cassie after the cleanup. This would also be a good training ground for her to appreciate how easy life can be if you don't start messing up. :)

2. Water Fun - We have always motivated Cassie to compete in swimming. Although, she hasn't been able to practice recently, she is still looking forward to compete this April. Allowing Cassie to surpass her boarders is the key in preparing her on how to compete in the "Adult World". This is the best training since she is taught the value of perseverance and how to compete against herself and overcome her limitations. Also to let her know that it's paradise to beat others but it's heaven to see that one could overcome boundaries. Hopefully it's not too late to prep her for the summer qualifiers.

3. Scribble, Scribble, Scribble - Cassie has a bit of an awful handwriting. Writes some letter in awkwardly reverse ways, not minding the value of the lines on her paper. She will be given an hour each day to practice writing in order to develop speed and control over her mind and digitalis. In order to make it fun for her, I will encourage her to start a diary, where she can write everything she's done this summer. I bet it would also improve her vocabulary and hopefully get rid of her developing scatterbrain.

4. Revive CRIB Photography - As early as 6 years old, Cassie has been taking photos with her dad. I know she has an eye so I will personally make sure she will get back on track and start loving photography again. It's not just taking clear pictures but what's more important is capturing what stories life has to show through photographs. I am positive that she'll do good in photography that's why I'm giving her 1000% support.

5. The Gang - Life would be depressing for Cassie not to have time with "The Gang"! Ei, nothing violent about it. Her "Gang" consists of kids in the neighborhood that she plays with...hehehe. From, badminton, to driving a "trisikad", it only means more fun fun fun!

6. Granny Time - Cassie would be spending a lot of time with granny because I know she'll miss her much when she goes to the US this August. Lots, of malling, Greenwich, Chowking and trips to the TDC office. Better be good and behave Cassie.

7. Cartoon-Athon - Cassie would sometimes think that watching cartoons would keep her a baby forever. Even if she watched them 50 times, she just wouldn't budge. A good quality time with mommy too that is. So I better start preparing the dvds and checherias and it's gonna be MOVIETIME EVERY TIME!

8. Cooling out would be the next best thing in this scorching heat. For sure, Cassie will demand coolers like halo-halo, maize con hielo, ice pop and the all-time favorite, ICE CREAM!

9 and 10. MOMMY-TIME! I have been depriving Cassie of quality time when I was working so I'll make sure I make it up to her. (That's why it's occupying two slots!) I still don't know what specifics that we are going to do but for sure, no matter how simple they will be, we'll have super fun because we're together.

I hope Cassie will like what I have in store for her. Nothing spectacular but intricately thought of.

Happy Thoughts This Summer!

Simplifying "Happy"

A lot of those who know me would describe me as a carefree person and others for sure would secretly think of me as a happy-go-lucky one. Why is that? It's because I smile and laugh a lot. Even my sister thinks I haven't grown up yet (which in that case, I hope she doesn't think I'm autistic for having stagnant mental growth).

Well, I am elated that some of these people who think poorly of me would waste their time trying to figure me out. I guess they are just afraid of minding their own business and solving their own problems that they have to feast on me. Nevertheless, this article will attempt to put an end to everybody's curiosity why I am simply a happy person.

Let's define the word happy. In the Webster Dictionary, the word happy means enjoying or characterized by well-being and contentment. Simple right?

But however incomplex it may seem, achieving contentment is like reaching the stars with your bare hands. Since every person is unique, no specific goal could ever be the same.

As for me, contentment comes in a variety of packages for every life department there is.

Family Department -

* Healthy family members

* A loving and supportive husband

* Great and happy children

* A wise mother

* A practical sister

* A warm home to live in

* Existing harmony brought about by reasonable compromise

* My mom's cooking

Friends Department

* Despite the distance of some of my closest friends, I still trust them to wish me well.

* Practically fun crowd

* Share the same indulgence I have in food

* Regardless of the age gap, I have found trustworthy young friends

* Learning from each others' real-life experiences making us much better people.

* Over-all, I have very true friends.

Career Department

* I've been able to try different kinds of jobs that widened my horizon.

* Have been to a lot of places, met different kinds of people, learn from their respective cultures and harmoniously worked with them

* Defeated my fear of being in new crowds, places, etc.

* Learned to be diplomatic without jeopardizing my life principles

* Continues to persevere in order to earn my keep

Personal Department

* I'm glad that despite the extra weight, I am still miles away from killers like diabetes and hypertension (which literally run in the family)

* Can naturally adjust and blend in like a chameleon

* Has always tried my best to be fair and objective

* Thankful that God made me who I am

With these things, why shouldn't I be happy? It's definitely not the amount of money I have in my pocket nor the laurels I have gained that would define my contentment. I have done thousands of wrong decisions but I have remained strong to face all consequences and I survived. I think as I continue my journey in this life, I would always hope for another chance without the greed in my heart that would just defeat my purpose of living a peaceful, contented and a happy one.

Have you ever asked yourself if you're really happy? Give that thought time and you'll be surprised that you're already happy, it's just that you never noticed it.

The Idea Of An Ideal Marriage

Marriage has always been a challenge for me. After a failed one back in the 90's, I turned my back to its essence, vowed not to get into that kind of trouble ever again and just settle for the "alone but never lonely" stature. Every single offer of commitment was evaded and treated with ridicule, sometimes even hurting the egos of those "knights in shining armor wannabe's." I was a terrible yet precise epitome of William Congreve's "Hell has no fury like a woman scorned." One-time misery is enough for a strong and wise woman like me.

Then came the unorthodox "prince charming" that I never expected to exist. To my surprise, I've known the guy for the longest time! It got me thinking. Maybe friendship would be a more stable foundation in a relationship, a combination worth trying. His persuasiveness was so inviting so the rest became history.

I guess maturity and knowing what we really want helped in making our marriage, fun and challenging all at the same time. But what we never forget is, despite of the hardships, we always make it a point to remember that we love each other and that by the end of the day, we have more than enough reason to smile and say, "this is still a good day sweet."

I never believed that our union made as one in everything but I am into the concept that despite our differences, we allow ourselves to accept them and still maintain a harmonious relationship. Sounds easy huh? Well, of course not! Just imagine two people with very strong convictions over a cup of coffee, definitely chaotic. A comparison to the typical debates at the public plaza is such an understatement, AS IN!

Our friends would say what we have is an ideal marriage. I greatly agree! Not because we are often seen having fun in facebook all the time but because we are normal, just like other couples. I guess we may rise a little bit above the others because we see our disputes as eye-openers that lead us to a much better understanding of each other.

My husband would always tell me, "You could never find a husband like me!" Well, he couldn't find a wife like me either, but I guess he knows it. It's easy for us to appreciate that we have each other, thus making our relationship a much healthier and happier one.

To those who plan to get married, well you just need to make sure that you are marrying for the right reasons. Not to extend your bloodline but because you found the one you want to spend your entire lifetime with. Not someone you could display like a Ming Vase but a partner that you'll enjoy being with wherever, whenever.

To those who don't believe in marriage at all. Maybe it's your calling. There's nothing wrong with single blessedness but if you're not that sure, it helps to take risks. At least you won't end up wondering how it would be to have someone beside you, laugh with you, care for you. There's no such thing as "too late."

As for me, I know I'm in good hands. I'm pretty sure that there would always be a thorny path here and there but I think we can get through them easily. Thank you so much for being there sweet and for always trying to hold on. Promise, I'll do my share too. :)

Remember, marriage is not all about responsibility, obligation, security and all that serious stuff, it's also fun, laughter, plain and simple happiness. As I always say to my friends, "there may be reincarnation but no can be certain of it. I know that I have this life now so I should live it like it's my only one. Never waste a second for I may not have another day. Time is gold and I think I'm making sense. CONCEPT, that's what it is!"

Diet? Seriously!

I may still be cute at 194 lbs. but OMG, sooo unhealthy!

I was not surprised to see my weight soar up to 194 lbs (6 more pounds and I'm off to the auditions of "The Biggest Loser)! 2011 was full of adventure (and misadventure too) that kept me munching to keep my sanity. But of course, who am I to blame destiny for my obesity? I am still answerable for my decisions, right?

Here I am again, trying to plan out ways to lose weight because I feel so unhealthy now that I am having a hard time breathing and climbing even just two flights of stairs. Honestly, I look like a compound of fish eggs (BIHOD!) I've always thought that I am only 'til 45 years old because of my neverending smoking, etc. and the added years will be a bonus, but now I'm afraid that I may not reach 40 if I don't start taking care of myself.

I'm going to start slow but sure. Let me walk you through my plan towards a happier and healthier me and if I'm missing steps, let me know. :D

* Rice is my ultimate enemy therefore I have to do something. Cut rice back to 1 cup ASAP! Thanks to my friends at work, Ems and Peter for they ignore my heart-piercing stare everytime they say no to my plea of even just 1/2 cup of extra rice. As early as now, thanks a lot guys.

* Avoid fast food as much as possible. I know I won't be able to spend more time with my favorite muskeeterettes, Joanne and Cathy but I know they would understand why I have to look away from the oil-drenched fries.

* Goodbye to Coke for now. I may have had good times with this concoction but hey, I'd be helping myself lower down my blood sugar and all.

* Red Horse has been an all-time buddy so I don't think I can leave it behind. So, I'll stick to my regimen of 1 Liter the most per month. :D

* Walk for life. I have to start appreciating long walks again. With the help of an Ipod, for sure I'm going to enjoy it.

* Rest whenever I can. In this busy world, I would most of the time allow sleep-deprivation. This time, I know loving my bed is one of the best gifts I can give myself.

* Love myself! Because if I don't, I wouldn't know how to appreciate life more.

To those who are inclined to weight loss, just remember to do this for yourself because you deserve to enjoy the goodness that only life can offer.

I'm going to make this blog as my channel, one article per month, to check out if I'm making a progress or not. I hope I do good. Good luck to me (and my food blog) in my quest for a healthier Remilyn. :D

My Year That Was

I always bear in mind that gratitude comes with contentment and as I look back on everything that I have done this year, amazingly, despite all the challenges, I still have so much to thank for. Since this is my last blog for 2011, allow me to share everything that made me a better person.

January was certainly an eye opener for me. I have always thought that I would only hear road accidents over the radio or see them on the news. I never expected that I’d be in one too. I could still remember the experience of crawling on the street just after the intersection in La Salle right after we bumped a pedestrian crossing while the traffic light was green. I was closing my eyes and holding my husband tight just waiting for the next thing to happen. I realized that, I am also vulnerable just like anyone else which I never thought of in my lifetime. Despite the harassment of the pedestrian, I learned to stand up and say NO. Help was all we can give but we never assumed responsibility since she was guilty of reckless imprudence. I learned to be stern and not give in and not feel sorry for those who did not deserve it.

I took the month of June as a devastating curve on my job because I was transferred to something that could jeopardize my finances because it could put me on the unemployment list due to its difficulty. Resistance became an addition to every meal that I had, and I couldn’t stop whining of what I considered a misfortune. Later on, I realized that it’s not a bad thing after all. Despite the hardship, I was able to survive because of new friends, practically a new family in my workplace. Slowly on, I began to embrace the inevitable and now I could say, I’m smiling again.

October was such a refresher as I was offered to coordinate the Perpetual Cup Golf Tournament of La Salle. It opened doors that I never imagined. I thought I’m done in this field but through the help of a very good friend, I was able to test myself again if I can still bring it. A boost of self confidence was an ultimate and much needed during that time was given by my clients and the tap on my shoulder telling me I did a good job was more than enough to get me back on track.

After all the trials in 2011, I am once again revived that I can do more and even make a difference in others even in small portions. I was reminded that despite of everything, I am still here, enjoying the gift of life. With the support of family and friends, I am able to say “Life is Good.”

In 2012 I am not sure how I could fathom the mysteries of life but I know that I just have to believe the fact that with Him, nothing is definitely impossible. I have to love myself more in order to genuinely love others. I also wish for a more forgiving heart for I am also bound to make mistakes as I am also human. Time is gold and I should make wise decisions that would make me happy because I deserve it. I am not being selfish, I am just being fair to myself and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that.

To everybody who will take time to read this, thank you very much for letting me feel that my thoughts are also of value to people, that I make sense too. Hopefully, I will be able to come up with good and sensible thoughts in 2012 not just to entertain but also to shed enlightenment on certain things.

My Own Understanding Of Giving

Christmas has always been the top season wherein almost everyone has the inspiration to give. I don't think there is a single Christmas party in the christian community that does not have either an exchange gift or Kris Kringle. I'm not really sure though if everyone would understand the reason why we do such activities. To make it more practical, wish lists are created to make sure that those who will receive the gifts would be smiling when they see that they got what they wanted. I guess the bottom line is making someone happy in this yuletide season.

I have my own version of sharing happiness to others too and all are usually done spontaneously. Just like yesterday, we were hanging out at our fave Istarbaks Libertad when I decided to buy goodies from a bakery just beside the joint. While I was waiting for the cashier, I noticed a mom-child tandem choosing ice cream from the freezer. The 2 year old girl was already holding the ice pop but mom was still trying to scout for something cheaper. As the girl was starting to sob because she never wanted to let go of the treat, I saw the mom's eyes that as much as she wants to give in to her daughter, she knows she can't spend that much. She was so surprised when I told her that the ice pop was already paid and she need not worry about it. She was so grateful and gave me one of the most sincere Christmas greeting I have ever received in my entire life. For a P17 ice pop, I got a warm happy feeling which was just priceless.

This Christmas, I intend to do more and with a lot of help from friends, I am positive that I will be able to make this season special to others. I decided not to go to local orphanages because I know that there are already a lot of organizations that would be visiting and sharing their bounties.

I decided to focus on street children and the elderly. These kids may pester a lot of people to ask for alms but regardless of their racket, I am not forgetting that they are still children and that if they may have ended begging on the streets, maybe because they believe that what they're doing is right (no thanks to their parents). I am not patronizing mendicancy but I could just imagine how it is if they had a taste of Christmas without being shooed away and just see goodies that they would never even dream of trying in their entire childhood.

The elderly is going to be my other recipient, particularly those who still continue to struggle in order to earn their keep. With warm soup and maybe chicken dinner, I hope to show them that the world has not been completely cruel to them because they are still remembered and given importance even in the littlest way.

Giving is not to get something back but mainly to share the blessings that one has received no matter how small they are. I hope to inculcate this concept to my children and make them understand that we live for others too and would not achieve the true essence of fulfillment unless we have gratitude and selflessness in our hearts.

Lanterns of Hope

For so long a time, this has been a common sight outside the Provincial Jail. These dainty lanterns were made by the prisoners in order to generate income to give their families. They would sell them from P100 each while the more intricate ones are at P1000 and up.

Everytime that I passed by, I feel an unfathomable warmth. I would find myself looking at the wives who carefully display their "parols" as their children help along and I just can't take my eyes off them. I would see endless hope in their eyes as they try to persuade passers by to take home a lantern no matter how small it could be. A sale means a much better Noche Buena for them, not just "de lata" or canned goods nor instant noodles.

This year, the Provincial Jail has been moved to Tabunan, Bago City, farther from regular patrons who seemed to have made a pact to purchase their lanterns from their "suki's". As the jeepney I rode pass by the sidewalks of the former jail, I felt somehow sad because I only saw two or three stalls of these parols and I began to ponder, where would be the others who used to sell here and depend their families' Christmas dinner to these shining stars? Would their children still be able to enjoy the simple pleasures of the holidays? Would they even have another opportunity to earn this season? Questions that are left unanswered as I never had the courage to ask those who continue to sell at their stalls.

I wish that wherever they are, they find other ways to get through Christmas. As for their patrons, I know that as time goes by they will forget about it but for these women and children, they will always think of the light these patrons have given them as they take a lantern home.

Payback On Pay Day!

I have been with the Business Processing Outsourcing world for quite some time now and I truly agree that for as long as one has what it takes, like multi-tasking skills, with knowledge on basic computer usage and of course equipped with good conversational English, one will definitely earn more than a local employee, with a diploma at that.

Needless to say, even if I never graduated, life is just good with a great line of business.

Recently, I was moved to a new account and needless to say, the daily “nose-bleed” as we like to call the knowledge overload, has made me numb and stony-eyed at at some point. But then on the other hand it has made me more thankful that not only do I have a job, but a good paying one at that.

Yesterday was pay day and it only means payback time! Got enough to pay bills and mocha granita as a bonus this time since I haven’t been on under-time for more than a month already meaning I get to stay at the office for the complete nine hours (I still can’t believe that I managed, as in!!! )

I don’t know about the others but for me pay day is payback because this time I felt that I am working hard for my keep and it’s so hurting to spend my salary on something that is of less worth.

As I hold my salary in my hands, I noticed that I was staring at it for a time. Then I decided that I have to make sure I spend my money wisely. Not so much on gastronomic extravagance but more on the necessities. I know I’m a bit old to realize it but hey, better late than never.

I have to keep in mind that I have to take advantage of my existing employment for I know this won’t last forever. I’m aging by the minute and there’s no guarantee that I can still keep up with it for a very long time.

An unsolicited advice to my colleagues, money is a good friend but sometimes could be an influence of bad judgment and greed.

A good friend because it helps us sustain our everyday needs as well as our respective families.

An influence of bad judgment because sometimes since we have it, it could dictate us that a particular want becomes a need.

Greed because we tend to lose our sense of contentment that we yearn for more than we can afford leading it to neglect of the real priorities that we have on our list.

Let’s try not to be impractical and instead handle our responsibilities real-time. I would sometimes hear others mumble that they just wish they saved even P500 per pay day but had no perseverance to do so. My point? It’s never too late. Always remember that it’s never too late to start now.

For my immediate course of action? Here goes.

• Instead of spending P75 – P120 for coffee, I will be settling for the native coffee at our favorite joint at the Libertad Market @ P10. (both kinds of coffee can keep me awake anyways.)

• Consider “ukay-ukay” for decent jeans (usually around P150-P250) rather than salivating on P2,000+ *Guess pants.

• De-stressing through filled tummies is good but just don’t do it everyday. If I’ll be too stressed, I’ll try to satisfy myself @ Tikboy’s Pork barbecue for P70 (that’s with cold softdrinks already mind you.)

• Instead of spending P100 for a cab, I’ll take a breather before commuting at a jeepney by smoking one cigarette. P100 and P15 makes a lot of difference. (It would be more fun if I am with the two other Muskeeterettes, Cathy and Joanne.) Besides, both can take me to my destination and with the traffic along Lacson Streets, there’s not much time difference.

• Instead of consuming almost two packs of Winston a day, try to reduce it by just smoking when I have too. (after eating, having coffee or on 15 minute breaks.) I bet my doctor would be happy too.

• I’ll be more meticulous on a grocery day so that I won’t overspend. Be more vigilant on discounted items on the shelves so I can take advantage without missing the expiration date. (Be careful and avoid food poisoning…hehehe)

• Always make sure to bring my spill-proof tumbler to work so that I can get free coffee and water instead of spending P15 for the bottled ones.

• I’ll try to be more interested in tv series so that every time I buy dvd, it’s the complete season and not per partial number of episodes only.

Street Food Smorgasbord!

I seldom pass by the University of St. La Salle because I have a different route to work and although I would often think of venturing on what's new in the area, I just didn't seem to have found the time. Yesterday was a chance of another Happy Tummy. After taking care of some stuff in La Salle, I decided to wander the sidewalk of the university.

The scorching heat of 3pm became the spotlight to my new paradise. It was a one-stop gluttonous haven! The fruit stall greeted me with delight as I chose from its offerings; papaya, indian mangoes and singkamas. Who am I to resist the vibrant orange color of the papaya? So I grabbed P10 from my pocket and gave in to my craving.

The second stall offers hot sweet corn bathed in melted butter. Another innovation that I seldom see on the streets of Bacolod. It's a common sight at the mall but on the streets? I don't think so. Another thing I noticed, only in USLS that corn vendors exert extra effort in capitalizing for butter. When I pass by other schools, they just pick the maize, remove the covers and shoot them in the plastic. Talk about USLS taste! However, despite my love for sweet corn, I was somehow deprived from having one solely because I only have two hands.

The third stall offered Piaya, a Negrense pride and the fourth one would be the peanuts. I hardly notice them because the enticing sound of deep-frying just dominated my imagination. Alas! There it was! Fried vegetable lumpia. For only P5 each, the hot lumpia warmed my heart (and tummy). I ordered 4 newly cooked ones and for my convenience, the kind-hearted "manong" placed it in a cup plastic cup with lots of sinamak, a local dip that consists of vinegar and bird's eye chilli (katumbal). Manong also offers chicken innards and the likes. Before I forget, there is also a stall that sells everything that is related to frying and eggs! From kwek kwek, tokneneng, and get this...Cheezlog! I have yet to try them because unfortunately, I was not that prepared to gorge on them.

Last but not the least, Matt's Burrito. Everything on the menu is P30 only, from Tacos and Quesadillas to Beef or Chicken Burrito. It's certainly a new view for me considering the bold attempt of the proprietor to venture into a business that requires quality ingredients in order to be fully appreciated. I have tried the street burrito in Mexico that would probably cost P50 that time and unfortunately this one didn't come close. Although it offered variety from the common menu of Bacolod's street food there is definitely more room for improvement in order to capture an eater's delight. Thicker and softer bread perhaps and more meat, tomatoes and onions would do the trick. I know for a fact that my fellow Bacolodnons would not mind paying P50 for a "sulit" burrito.

One more thing, this strip is best for takeouts since there are no tables nor chairs for one to comfortably gobble these treats. But if you want to enjoy the hot food, then be ready for the dust, heat and prepare your dependable legs to stand up. And please don't forget to bring your own liquids. There may be a store where you can buy softdrinks or water but it's no guarantee that they are always cold.

You Can't Always Get What You Want...Now What To Do About It

My 8 year old kid is so good at getting what she wants, always on a "win-win" situation. At a young age, she knows how to play her cards well at haggling, not really common with children her age. I have always taught her that rewards come when she is good and disaster if otherwise. But I also raise her to be contented, letting her understand why she only gets mediocre glory if she only does just as much. She knows that she can only dream so much but without doing the right thing, she will only harvest what she deserves.

I grew up with a "yes or no" policy but thankfully, my dad gave me the leeway to reason and be heard. I know that I have made millions of mistakes in the past but it's not how I was brought up but it's because of lack of sensibility in taking the right path in life. However, in the end, it taught me to face my consequences and make the most of them because it is a fact that whatever I do, comes it's rightful repercussion.

I am a witness to a lot of people trying to ask the question: Why can't I get what I want? I would end up asking myself, "Are they even in the position to demand for what they want?" How hard could it be to understand the most common cliche back in my elementary days, "Kung ano gintanum mo, amo man na ang anihun mo? (What you sow is what you will reap.)" What's not conceivable about it? It's as simple as not looking for coconut on a mango tree.

You want people around you to help you in you're times of great need? Then don't abuse others' generosity and better yet, make sure you have done your part of the bargain before screaming SOS. And please don't forget that those that you cried for help also have their own challenges to deal with. Give them the break they deserve by not being bitter because they are not extending a helping hand.They may have more serious problems than yours.

You demand utmost respect from your peers? You certainly may... that is if you give the respect they deserve too. But most importantly, make sure you have secured self-respect first. As I would always remind myself, "Don't do unto others, what you don't want others to do unto you." I think that's about right.

You desire attention and command? Make sure that what ever you preach you practice so that the rest of the world will know that you stand by your principles and you believe in them so hard that they will follow because of your strong conviction.

For everyone's aspiration, there is one essential requirement...ONE'S SELF. We want something? Then we do something about it. We work for it and not just depend on others. At least if we don't succeed we can still hold our head up high and be proud that we have given it our best shot.

The "No Win" Burger

I was at Dalumbalay Burger Station today. After so many months of passing by the dainty refreshment, finally hubby and I decided to try their burgers. We ordered the DBB's Original (All In) basing on its inviting ingredients such as more meat, cheese, tomato, lettuce, onions, ham, bacon, pepperoni,pineapple and mushroom. For P130, I imagined eating it the sloppy way since it seemed to have offered a lot. I told myself, "I'm going to be smiling even if I'm so sick." The simplicity of the place made me feel I'm up for a home-made burger, like no other.

To my dismay, my palate fantasy disappeared into thin air when I checked out my order. The bun was a bit dry, the pineapple was 1/4 size of the regular one, instead of a bacon strip, it had approximately 1 tablespoon of bacon bits, a small pepperoni, mini ham, and 4 mini mushroom slices.

In fairness the taste of their patty was ok and their lettuce was fresh but I don't think it would pass for its price for it did not offer anything spectacular. I have clearly fallen into a trap by false advertising and exaggerated campaigns by those who claim the place to be all worth it. In other words, I was duped!

Good thing that I was not able to really deal with my food since I was with my hubby and the two other muskeeteers who provided the fun and laughter.

The next time I want to spend more than a hundred for a burger, I think I would just settle for Planta's Western Bacon Burger (P160) or Business Inn's American Cheeseburger (P100), which by the way would be a totally separate article worth writing about.

Flowers For The Dead...And To The Living

November 1 is fast approaching and it seems to be that I was in a time warp this afternoon as I saw the busy sidewalk of the Libertad Market, swarmed with flowers, baskets and hopeful vendors that they would be able to make a profit out of their business venture. I had to double check my calendar to make sure what date it is because somehow I felt so idle while others are busy shopping for the coming All Saints' Day.

One thing that struck me is this photo where a man and his daughter, eagerly wait for sales to come in. I can see that they are tired but they didn't seem to mind for as long as they wait on the opportunity to earn for the day. Competition is stiff as they sell only local flowers from Mambukal while others poured more capital to sell flowers from Cebu.

I met Nene and her daughter Rubielyn. As the mother work on her arrangements, the 11 year old calls on customers to check out their merchandise. I was very fascinated as the young girl would courageously peddle as people walked by their stall, so unlikely of kids nowadays.

When I asked Nene the price of a bundle, she was actually shy to answer, maybe hesitant that I may find them expensive. Little did she know that her price was reasonable and competitive, way cheaper than those selling flowers coming from Cebu. Just for the Baby's Breath, a common add on to basket arrangements, she sells them for P10 a bundle, approximately 1/4 of the exact same flowers sold by capitalists for P100. If customers would canvass first, I guarantee that she would sell everything before Tuesday comes.

To be fair with those who invested more capital, their flowers are of course more vibrant and better quality as they range from P80 - P100 per dozen, (P80 for those fortunate ones like me because I know the seller and of course it comes with free arrangement. Good deal huh?)

As everyone spends hundreds to offer flowers to their dead, for sure those up there are smiling as they are remembered but to these peddlers, it means another assurance that they can sustain their family's needs for the next couple of weeks. Everybody can put a smile on their faces in these holidays because of then flowers and that goes for both the dead and the living.

Here Comes The Long Weekend!

“I love weekends!” A common concept especially of those who work from Mondays thru Fridays. I don’t usually have the same feeling despite the fact that my days off are Fridays and Saturdays. But since it’s my kids’ school break, I’m surely going to have the weekend of my life and I can’t wait to decide where to go and what to do with my Friday that I woke up 4am and started cleaning up to free my hours when the whole family is awake.

The chores are almost done (80%) and while finishing the rest, here I am browsing on the endless choices online. Let me share what I’ve found out so far.

For a hot yet windy day, a glass parfait will be the best treat for me. Scoops Ice Cream Bar offers the best parfaits and sundaes here in Bacolod and take note, it’s powered by FIC (Fruits in Ice Cream) where every scoop is guaranteed the value of one glass of milk. I’ll take milk that way, any day! That’s not all, their tuna melt and Chili con Carne is to die for. Great food, vibrant ambience, warm staff and accommodating owners Will and Agnes Villar, the bill is all worth it!

Synopsis:

Attention: Teenagers! Parent Consideration… PLEASE! (A Repost)

Writer's Note: I am reposting this as my way of extending my message to our present youth. I know it's not much but as I continue to witness the immoderate shindig of these teenagers to the point of reaching the indecency and inconsideration that their parents do not expect from them at all, I am continuing to remind these young people to be more conscious of what reality has to offer and where they are bound to go as they continue making the wrong moves. This semestral break would be the best time for parents to save money and for kids to spend their valuable time with their families so I am continuing to encourage everyone to spend your most quality time with family.

Sometime early last week, my 19-year old told me that she is attending a birthday bash of a classmate and as far as I can remember she mentioned of going home 12 midnight.

The party was last Friday and guess what? She came home 12 o’clock! I was even about to text her and ask how things are going, in case she might forget to go home to the time she promised or better yet to give her the chance to ask for an extension. But nope! Not my Nadine! She truly kept her word.

Often times, I would see teenagers on the streets at an indecent hour, disregarding danger, laughing loudly sometimes, enjoying the world as if it’s the last night. I would start to wonder, how are their parents taking it? For most, I bet they just don’t know much to worry about their children’s whereabouts. For the others? Maybe they just don’t bother checking anymore.

One of my hangouts after shift is the Coffee Station at Robinson’s Mall. There was one time when I and Muskeeterette Joanne decided to de-stress with mocha granita and pizza at the joint and we noticed a group of teenagers, probably college students, and they were all loud and acting up like typical brats or wannabe brats. Because of their uncontrollable voices, we can’t help but overhear the whole conversation.

There was this one who was bragging about how he told his mom that he needs an P10,000 apartment here in Bacolod. As he puffed his cigarette, I checked him out. He doesn’t really look like an haciendero’s son. He doesn’t even have a single branded item on his wardrobe, nothing spectacular in other words. And then all of a sudden he said, “we’re all going to flow right? I’ll text mom that I can’t go home coz we have to work on a project…” After a while, he read his mom’s reply, “do you still have pocket money and clothes left?”

My heart broke into pieces because I could just imagine how his mom is trusting him to be honest with her and diligent to his studies. I told Joanne that I feel sorry for the mother because for sure she is working hard in order to sustain his son’s needs.

Teenagers nowadays seem to brush aside the value of family, hard work, even value of money. Spending for cigarettes when one is not earning is simply a vanity that he or she is not deserving of. Demanding for a bigger allowance just to have enough for partying is such an inconsiderate thing especially to those whose parents are laborers, who do not bother to rest from the fields just so to finish their work and earn not only for themselves but of course to finance the long list of “school requirements” that their “loving” children send them. Having a spokesperson do the sales talk of how a laptop should be a necessity so that their mediocre-earning parents would squeeze every centavo in their pockets to produce an Acer at least, (China made notebooks are never an option, by the way).

Paging ingrate college students! Please bear in mind that you are sent to the best schools that you’re parents are trying to afford because they want you all to have an opportunity in life, something that maybe some of them did not have the luxury back then. Even if they have overflowing budgets for you, remember that they worked hard for it and it doesn’t give you the right to splurge on unnecessary things. You are sent to school to earn a degree and not concentrate on how to put on a masskara for an “emo” look.

I just hope that one day, you kids will realize how to value the right things, the right people. It’s not all about projection! It’s all about what you will become and how you will face the real challenges of living independently, sustaining your every need and survive the ferocity of life.

Just a thought from a concerned parent who hopes that this will be something worth pondering on.

Rolling With Pork & Beans Spring Rolls

I always like to munch on spring rolls or lumpia. May it be Chinese, Shanghai, Ubod, Ngohiong, Rollos Primavera, anything that is rolled and fried is a winner to my palate.

Recently, my fancy in this dish was caught again by a unique recipe from a food magazine called Pork & Beans Spring Rolls, sponsored by of course, a manufacturer of pork and beans. The goal of this recipe is to make a tasty spring roll at a much lesser time as well as budget friendly.

Pork & Beans Spring Rolls

Ingredients:

1 tablespoon cooking oil

2 tablespoons onion, chopped

6 pieces longganisa, chopped

1 cup cabbage, shredded

1 can Pork & Beans (230 grams)

1/3 cup cheddar cheese

8 pieces lumpia wrapper, cut into halves

Procedure:

1. Heat pan with oil, then add onion and longganisa. Fry longganisa until well cooked. Add in cabbage and cook until wilted.

2. Add Pork & Beans and mix well. Simmer until almost dry and pasty.

3. Spread a tablespoon (about 40 grams) of mixture over spring roll wrapper, add cheese then roll.

4. Deep fry until crispy. Serve with ketchup if preferred. Recipe costs only P110.00 and makes 16 rolls.

With Pork & Beans, spring rolls get a tasty twist.

Allow me to add some tips on this one.

1. Instead of just cabbage, you may add shredded carrots as well. This is the best chance that your kids can get their molars on veggies.

2. Other than longganisa, you may want to use chorizo recado if you want a more complex taste other than just sweet meat.

3. Make sure to appropriately chop the longganisa. If you notice, mine are bigger coz I didn't chop them well. (I just didn't have enough time to cook the longganisa and chop them.) It easily tore my lumpia wrapper, so for a hassle-free rolling, make sure the meat is chopped well.

4. My life was easier because I got my veggies at the mall and requested the very accommodating merchandisers to shred the cabbage and carrots finely for me. (God bless their hearts.)

The Living Remembers

I was growing up looking forward to every November 1^st. I can’t wait to get my taste buds on my mom’s delightful valenciana, a dish made of glutinous rice, chicken meat, liver, gizzard and of course the raisins. And also, talk about the holiday, no school, get the chance to wake up late and just taking it easy. It’s also thedate when we would parade to different cemeteries to visit our dead. It didn’t occur to me though the essence of the whole thing.

Eventually as I grew older, I realized that it’s not all suman that matters, but the thought of remembering our loved ones that have passed away . Remembering them while they were still alive, the happy moments that were shared, the priceless knowledge that entailed every unique experience we had with them and even just the appreciation of life.

Now that I have children, I try my best to teach them the true value of All Saint’s/Soul’s Day. It’s not just the fancy-shmancy face makeup, Halloween costumes, food trips at the cemetery and perhaps another day to lay back. It is a privileged date for us to reminisce the wonderful times that we shared with our loved ones who are no longer with us.

Don’t get me wrong. I still tag along with their caprice to fun things but I make sure that by the time that we get back home, they are reminded of how they became who they are, living well because of the care and love of family, both the living and the dead.

Ten days more to go and once again it will be Nov. 1. For sure my mom will cook her famous treat, prepare flowers and visit Lola Meding and Daddy. Cassie may give her best shot to charm me into getting another face paint, Nadine would probably munch on every food stall we pass by. Owen may focus on taking photos of the celebration. I have work on that day but I surely won’t miss the get-together with my family and enjoy the memories that will be forever in our hearts by the end of the day.

My Masskara Day Off

Oct.14, 2011 - It was a hot midday when Cathy and I decided to taste the Masskara Fever. Since we like to do a lot of malling, we thought of starting at the plaza and occupied ourselves with the different merchandise offered on the sidewalk. We had good food, new discoveries, new experiences and most of all FUN FUN FUN!

Let me tell my story with photographs courtesy of my friend Cathy's point and shoot camera, my Nokia C3 and of course my hubby's keen eye and dslr.

The first stall that I spent at was selling shades and different kinds of key chains. I never expected to find one of a pig from the popular game "Angry Birds" and guess what? It was only P20 and with a personalized lettering too. I know I got more than a good deal.

SM was our sanctuary amidst the scorching heat and Kaisei Restaurant save us from hunger after an hour of strolling. A bowl of Gyu Yakiniku Don for me and some California Maki did the trick.

This foil-pressed souvenir shirt is worth every penny for P300 pesos. I tried to haggle but since this was sold only at the mall, it was next to impossible to get a discount. This is manufactured by entrepreneurs from Iloilo City.

This stall at the plaza sold their souvenir shirts at P150 for the regular sizes and P180 for the bigger ones. As early as 1pm, people swarmed the stall to get their hands on the shirts. Although, the material of the shirts are not so special yet it was definitely pocket-friendly.

I had a feeling that I won't be at the Masskara Dance Parade so I decided to get at least a glimpse of the festive costumes at the mall

Next stop was the all-time favorite "Karnabal". It was a bit early when we checked it out so it wasn't jum-packed yet. Except for one or two who rode the Octopus Ride, young and old fascinated themselves betting on the color game, I hope they were winning. :D

At around 5:30pm we decided to invade Lacson Strip. After picking up Joanne, we strolled the 19th St. and back to LFisher and ended in front of L Sea. Check out the juicy inasal of Chicken Deli (photo by Cathy A.)

Puppet Masskara: A New Window For Bacolod's Creative Youth

My festival experience became much more colorful after I witnessed the newly conceptualized Puppet Masskara.

As Cathy and I roamed around the tattoo stalls, we met some co-workers that told us about a show going on at the heart of the Public Plaza, sort of like a "Moriones show."

Of course, after spending like 4 hours at the mall, we felt that at least we'll have an authentic Masskara activity and not just posing with the costume displays.

It came to a surprise to me that a lot of people were there to witness the event together with the city officials and lots and lots of photographers. I think I was one of those who never really digested the posted schedule of the festival. Nevertheless, thanks to Cathy's P&S, I was able to capture some photos of the Puppet Masskara.

What would become of the Masskara Festival without the smiling masks? The vibrant colors that seem to uplift even the heaviest spirits, the wide smiles that can erase ones worries and the ingenuity of the designs that further boost the Bacolodnon talent are truly worth celebrating.

As much as I would like to show all of you my concept of what a happy Masskara Festival should be, through the help of my C3 phone, the displayed masks for this year's festival will definitely be understated if I take the photographs .

Once again, I am privileged to showcase my husband's gift in photography as he presents the different masks that are commonly seen on the streets of Bacolod.

Open Tacos At Its Best

For those who don’t know my nickname since birth is Little (please avoid relating it to my size…hehehe) and when I first noticed an eatery in 888 China Town Square called “Little Corner” I had an instant hunch that I will have good experience with this establishment.

It’s a simple stall that offers common treats but with a different twist.

I have two favorites that I could never resist of not having everytime I am on a window-shopping spree. The open tacos, for only P45 offers tasty home-made shells with onions, tomatoes and their unique sauce which is a mixture of mayo and pineapple juice that gives such a tangy taste to the palate.

Thirst-quenching Halo-Halo

The other one is the powerful corn shake. Ordinarily, it’s just crushed ice and evaporated milk and like two spoons of canned cream of corn. Theirs is jump-packed with corn kernels, cereals making it “yummier’, only for P25.

They also serve the all-time favorite Halo-halo @ P25, abundant in “dulce nga saging” and ube, of course not to mention the cereals on top.

Fried noodles, becoming a potential superstar in the “world of snacking” comes with 2 siomai as toppings at P30 only! The best part, it’s cooked in front of you and served hot! It is such a divine feeling for a hungry lad to feast on at a very reasonable price.

All in all? Thumbs up to Little Corner as it caters to the budget-conscious Negrense with its friendly staff, ready to serve you with a smile.
