With only a month before Queens of the Stone Age release their first new album since 2007, they have released a disturbing animated clip to accompany their song “Kalopsia.”

Created by the artist Boneface, who also created the cover of their new album …Like Clockwork, the video starts with an explanation that Kalopsia is “a condition wherein things appear more beautiful than they are,” which is suiting since the video consists of a creature in a happy mask evaporating people into wisps of blood.

The sub-two-minute long video is just a snippet of the actual song, but the album’s version will also feature Trent Reznor.

…Like Clockwork is scheduled for release on June 3 on Matador.

05.08.13

Granted that I only caught the last three songs of electro-rock duo Brick + Mortar’s set, I really shouldn’t judge the band. Let’s do it anyway though, yeah? Driving bass and vocals with a real sense of purpose spilled into a high-energy performance, and made me wish I hadn’t opted to eat beer cheese instead of catch their set.

Wednesday’s Union Hall show marked night two of Dessa’s three-date NYC residency. The bulk of her set was culled from 2010′s A Badly Broken Code, with a few False Hopes and Parts of Speech tracks peppered in between. “Alibi” was an excellent choice to start the night, as Dessa’s impassioned delivery had the sweaty crowd in the palm of her hands before she even reached the chorus.

Dessa’s third full-length solo record, Parts of Speech, is set to drop on June 25. Though it features production from Doomtree regulars Lazerbeak and Paper Tiger (who opened the show with a DJ set), it’s a departure for the Minneapolis-based artist in many respects. The 12-track album finds her singing more, rapping less, and selecting her soundscapes with a mix-tape mentality, more concerned with the thematic continuity of her narratives than anything else.

“Call Off Your Ghost,” one of the new record’s highlights, came alive under the deft drums and backing vocals of her touring band. Dessa, or the character she inhabits, speaks of living in the same neighborhood as her ex’s new lady and crossing paths with her on the street. “It’s just a lot to ask to watch your future walking past me,” she sang on the richly layered song.

With the sweatbox of the downstairs stage in full effect, Dessa asked the crowd to refrain from hooting and hollering as she took off her sweater. Though she said it rather casually, Dessa raised a good point. If you can’t go to a show and appreciate the art put forth without drunkenly reducing the artist to a pair of tits, fuck you. Stay home. Union Hall thankfully kept it classy (a patron in the rear let out a well-timed, sarcastic “ewww”) and encore chants quickly followed Dessa’s powerful closer.

Wolf People have released the second video from their fêted second album, Fain, for the track “Empty Vessels.” Jack Sharp says of the track: “A storm is coming. Empty Vessels was written in fits and starts over a long wet summer under the spell of George Ewart Evans, an oral historian from Suffolk, whose books I was reading on trips to Dunwich, Blaxhall and Aldeburgh. The conditions of those trips were echoed when the song was recorded in Yorkshire, in the squally spring showers on the Dales.”

The video was inspired by the artwork for the album (done by the band’s guitarist Joe Hollick) which itself was inspired by a 1950s video for “Poem Electronique” by the composer Edgard Varese. Working again with director Phil Poole, the video takes imagery both from the band’s artwork and their equipment and intersperses it with captured moments of the band performing. A beguiling piece of video making, Poole says: “Using the Fain artwork as inspiration, the video for ‘Empty Vessels’ was put together as an abstract piece exploring the many layers and depths to the track, through a combination of unorthodox visuals and motion graphics.”

Dessa @ Union Hall #dessa #doomtree #unionhallbrooklyn

Dessa @ Union Hall #dessa #doomtree #unionhallbrooklyn

FREE TIME - “I LOST AGAIN”

Yesterday, rap comics the Lonely Island (aka Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, and Akiva Schaffer) shared details of their next record, The Wack Album, out June 11 via Republic. The trio also announced their YouTube series, “Wack Wednesdays”, which will feature new music and videos every Wednesday leading up to the album’s release.

Today, “Wack Wednesdays” kicks off with the video for the new track “Spring Break Anthem”. It starts out as an episode of ”Between Two Ferns”, Zach Galifianakis’ fake talk show, in which Galifianakis interviews Spring Breakers star James Franco. ”Of all the art projects you’ve done, what has made people roll their eyes the hardest?” he asks.

This follows the previously-shared clip for ”YOLO” with Kendrick Lamar and Maroon 5’s Adam Levine. Along with Lamar and Levine, The Wack Album features Justin Timberlake, Solange, Lady Gaga, Pharrell Williams, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, T-Pain, and more.

GREY REVEREND

Bonobo’s video for “First Fires,” from The North Borders LP, was directed by Los Angeles-based Alex Takacs (aka Young Replicant).

JIM JAMES @ WEBSTER HALL (LIVE REVIEW)

JIM JAMES @ WEBSTER HALL (LIVE REVIEW):

04.29.13

After standard train delays, I arrived at Webster Hall 45 minutes late and missed all of Canadian ‘doom soul’ artist (and recent Juno award nominee) Cold Specks’ opening set. From what I gather, she killed it.

Jim James and his touring cohorts took the stage with atmospheric Middle Eastern sounds ringing in the air. With a bow from the big name on the marquee, a spectacular set comprised of James’ solo debut, Regions of Light and Sound of God, began under the restrained kinetic energy of “State of the Art.” The song deals with our growing disconnect as modern technologies foster the illusion of unity. James speaks of “a life worth living” divorced from a sea of restless faces buried in screens, logging their every journey outside the house on Foursquare and projecting images of a high quality existence.

“When the power goes out, I got all I need,” he sang as the lights of Webster Hall intermittently teased blackness before going out.

Much like the My Morning Jacket material that preceded its release, Regions puts forth a big, complex sound. Even its more delicate tracks, such as the gorgeous “Actress” and set-closing “God’s Love to Deliver,” suggest something grand, luminous and important. The uplifting “Know Til Now” peaked with a James sax solo that became a staple of the evening. Minutes later, rainbow sunbeams emanating from behind the drummer silhouetted James as he berated an electric guitar and whipped his wild curly mane around like a rich man’s Willow Smith. An elongated mid-line pose near the close of “A New Life” began a series of hilarious nonverbal gestures from the headliner, who appears to be enjoying every second of the limelight.

Virtually every song concluded with virtuosic improvisation built on the energy and tone of the given track. “All is Forgiven” boasted a sinister, brooding breakdown suitable for a ferry crossing the river Styx, which the folks who think it’s cool to talk loudly during a concert will hear as they go straight to hell.

Released by Daysleeper

On the heels of Exit Earth’s promising 2011 EP, Peck, Heavy Eyes boasts a dirty, lo-fi approach accented by shoegazey breakdowns and surging choruses. The UK indie rock trio’s angsty debut LP should appeal to fans of Bloc Party and Interpol. “Brandon” starts things off with a catchy, propulsive chorus and earnest lyricism from frontman Symrun Johal. The song is followed by layers of fuzz sitting atop ample percussion on “Dalston Grilz,” making for one of the album’s high-water marks.

For all its strengths, there are moments on Heavy Eyes when Johal still seems to be finding his way vocally. “Sisters,” for instance, is a throwaway retro punk track that attempts to get by on energy alone and mercifully ends after a minute of unintelligible wailing. As the Leamington Spa, England band formed only two years back, inevitable kinks must be worked out before they’re able to kick over buildings with their bare feet. They’re off to a good start with Heavy Eyes.
