You might be wondering where I have been. Well, I have been toying with Sobriety. Yes, I’m not joking. Right now, at this point in time in my life, I need to be clear and re-evaluate where I am and where I am headed. This came after quitting eating Wheat, which has been a positive change in my life in terms of weight loss and how I feel overall. I’m not sure what the website is going to look like in the future… But for now, it’s probably going to link to music that I write, or what I’m up to in terms of messing about with Linux. Thanks for visiting, for now the beer is on hold and we will see where that goes. Be well all.

Prior to sampling, I googled the brewery and was happy to discover this is yet another Vancouver based brewery. As it turns out, they are one of the newest on the scene, which might be why I haven’t heard of them till now. Also cool to note, the brewer is a fellow guitarslinger and I’ve gotta like that.

The beer comes in a 650 ml bottled, weighing in at 5.25% alc./vol in a bottle with a tasteful green and orange circle logo with 2 rams locking horns. I’m not sure what the significance is of the 2 rams on the cover but I’ve asked on their facebook group and will post any response in the comments.

The beer pours clean with minimal head and mild activity in the glass. It has a beautiful light copper colouring and has great clarity.

Triumph Rye Ale

Let’s check the aroma… Interesting, nice balance of hops to malt and I’m not all that familiar with Rye malt beers so perhaps that’s the scent I can’t put my finger on. I’m looking forward to the first sip.

The Taste: Mmm this is a delicious beer. It kind of reminds me of a scottish beer I had that was brewed with heather. I like it, this is a nice change from the barley malt based beers I mostly encounter. It’s well balanced yet just complex enough to be interesting and not so complex that you couldn’t drink a few glasses in succession.

Coal Harbour Brewing has done a fine job on this brew and I look forward to trying more of their offerings in the near future.

Yum! HSB Super Jupiter IPA

This beer was gifted to me by my lovely wife for Valentines Day. Lucky for me we live in the very town where this great beer was brewed, so whatever they offer that doesn’t hit the liquor store I can get at the brewpub.

The beer pours with ample thick creamy head that holds fast to the cup.

The aroma surprises me – I expected to be hit hard with grapefruit but I wasn’t. I’ve had other local IPA’s that have a higher citrus aroma and taste. What I will say is that this IPA does indeed have a pleasant hoppy aroma but it also has a subtle aroma of real grapefruit and that is pretty awesome. It’s more authentic.

Let’s sip it down shall we.

This beer has a fine mouth feel, it is smooth as butter with a nice level of carbonation. The grapefruit to my pallate is not strong but I am fighting a cold so I may revisit the beer. What I do find very fine is that its quite a nice sippping IPA. I expected because it indeed was brewed with grapefruit that I might get something rough and bitter but it wasn’t like that. While there is a bitterness to it, its very smooth and easy drinking in a good way.

I really like this IPA and would recommend it, it’s got class and I can see myself buying it again in the near future.

This beer is awesome. I like it better than regular ginger ale for sure and of course it has the added benefit of a bit of alcohol to get your buzz on. Highly recommended.

Linux:
Puppy Linux rescues my harddriveless hp mini and breathes new life into it. After trying to install Ubuntu on a USB stick and even Crunchbang and turning off journaling on the filesystem, I checked Puppy Linux as a last resort before binning the netbook. Sure enough, Puppy Linux is as fast as ever and is a joy to use on USB. I highly recommend if you have an aging netbook that needs a boost to try out puppy.

Visual – The beer bottle has wax on the top. ARGH! Its pretty but stop doing it brewers. Granted, this one was easier to open than the other breweries wax topped brew, its more trouble than its worth. The beer pours a dark brown showing signs of mild carbonation.

Aroma – Vanilla, Oak, Bourbon, Caramel.

Taste – OMG. This beer is soooooooooo GOOD! It is dangerously smooth. I’ve had stouts that were near this in terms of alcohol content that were far more rough a brew. I’m tasting the bourbon, vanilla, oak, caramel. This is a smooth sippin’ mellowing brew that deserves your undivided tastebud attention. I think this could be the best beer I have had throughout Beermas and possibly from last year and this year. Granville Island Limited Release offerings have been stellar which surprises me when the regular beers they offer are in my opinion middle of the road. But beers like the Jolly Abbott and the Imperial Chocolate Stout and now this one are such standouts, I am without question going to buy the next Granville Island Limited Release beer.

The Text Breakdown:

Visual – Funky bottle, lady dressed as santa but in a much skimpier outfit. She’s got a bag full of brew and a naughylist.  Nearly black pour with minimal head.

Aroma – Vanilla, I think I’m catching the aged oak. There’s allspice maybe.

Taste – A unique winter beer experience.  Mildly carbonated porter, less weighty on the tongue than I expected.  The beer grew on me as I made my way through it.  The flavour is complex. There is vanilla, allspice  and perhaps a slight smoky flavour which could come from the aged woodchips but there’s also a sweetness and then a slightly tangy finish which then leaves the tongue slightly numbed.  In the audio review I may not have expressed that I would buy it again, but its a curious experience and I just might want to visit this beer again.

The Text Breakdown:

Today’s beer was given to me by my father. Old Rasputin – Russian Imperial Stout by North Coast Brewing.

The brew weighs in at a hefty 9% alc/vol and comes in a stylish black and gold labeled bottle with a photo of Rasputin in the center.

The beer pours solid black with a glorious amount of thick pillowy beige foam. Checking the aroma – wow – this is one big, rich, malty, tangy brew. This is for sure going to be a big and bold Imperial Stout.

After working my way through the thick creamy wall of foam I was rewarded with huge complex mouthful of brew. It is smooth with a rugged edge bringing a wallop of tang that, this is a sip and savour kind of brew. You needn’t be in a hurry to finish this one quickly, take your time.

This passes the ‘buy it again test’ with flying colours.

Taste – Wow, more thick and syrupy and flavourful than expected. Serious YUM happening here. This beer is big and bold with a subtle sweetness to the malt and a bitter smack of hops on the finish. I like this beer a lot. Definitely repeat buy material – highly recommended.

Aroma – Wow – this is sour keys kind of sour and I swear I’m catching some Cider.
Taste – Confirmed – this is a lambic style brew – you got to like this style or you are going to be in for one hell of a surprise. It’s sour, tangy, fruity, ciderish, dry. If you like a lambic brew this will be great. If not then you will wish you hadn’t bought it.

That said, I think Driftwood has done a good job of this brew, not my cup of tea but it did grow on me as I stuck it out and continued to drink it.

This beer is interesting – has a sweet tangy berry aroma.  Tastes a little better than it smells.  Not my favorite beer but I don’t dislike it.

Rogue Brewing – Dead Guy Ale

Tasty Tasty.  Nice trademark Rogue Brewing base beer flavouring.  Nice balance of hops and malt.

Howe Sound Brewing – PumpkinEater Imperial Pumpkin Ale

Text review:
I’ve got a bit of a connection to Howe Sound Brewing – very remote I might add, but I met Microbrew pioneer Frank Appleton via my mother as a child. Frank and HSB’s John Mitchell spearheaded the resurgence of Microbrewing in BC. I was quite fascinated as a child to see Frank had his beer patched in a spout right next to his faucet. But let’s get back on track with looking at the beer.

It pours a wonderful copper colour with a good helping of head that disappears as fast as it arrives. I battled to get a picture before it went away. The aroma is deep and malty with the Halloween spicing of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg star anise.

Let’s taste. Yummy. This reminds me a bit of the Winter Ale HSB makes. It’s also a slow sipping beer with deep malt and rich spicing that you would probably want to keep to a 2 glass maximum. It’s actually quite delicious but you’d treat it more like an after dinner beer to mellow out with like you might do with a scotch.

Paper Baggin it?

This brew showed up in a funky paper bag – a gift from the Great Ghoul when I wasn’t looking.
On the 4th day of Beeroween,the great ghoul gave to me, something with not a pumpkin to be seen.

Indeed this is true, it’s not a pumpkin beer, but it’s halloweeny in that it’s in an orange bottle.

This Saison beer is a limited release from Granville Island

Brewing and I am eager to try it as I thoroughly enjoyed the last GIB beer I had last Winter called Jolly Abbott.

Let’s pour. Lots of thick pillowy dense foam on this one, looks like a Hefe underneath all that – no floaties but translucent.

Let’s Smell. Spicy/Fruity/Sour (raisins, grapes, sour apple).

Let’s Taste. Oh that’s very nice! Less peppery than another local Saison – more subtle. Medium tight carbonation – initial sip sour fruit dancing on the sides of my tongue, finishes tart with a slight sweetness.

Definitely worth the buy. It’s a limited release so it might be tricky to find but it’s probably a good foray into the Saison style if you haven’t tried one.

Beeroween 2012 – Day 3 – Wychwood Brewing – Hobgoblin Ruby Beer

Text Review:

I’ve got myself a Whychwood Brewing Hobgoblin Ruby Beer, which is declared unofficially by the brewery to be the chosen beer for Halloween.
Well, I suppose they can claim anything they like, but what matters in the end is taste.

Lets take a look at the bottle, the artwork is pretty groovy, there is a good representation of a colourful hobgoblin on the label.

The beer weighs in at 5.2% alc/vol and pours a ruby red and is topped with a thumb and a half of head that dissipates quickly. The aroma has a fruitiness (perhaps raisins) atop a deep malty base. The sip is interesting – smooth, creamy, mildly carbonated. I find myself wondering if there were any hops in this beer. There is a subtle tang but after looking at the label the only ingredients are barley and malt. Not sure the flavour is very halloweeny but the artwork surely is.

This is a tasty beer and a welcome excursion away from the usual big flavour/big hoppy beers I tend to gravitate to. I would seek this one out again when I am looking for a mellow malt sipping brew and you might want to as well.

Apologies for the clicks here and there – I was having some technical issues but the Beeroween happens fast so I’ll just have to be more careful on Day 3.

Text Review:

I don’t think I’ve had a Steamworks brew for a long time, it’s a bit fuzzy but I believe I’ve been to their restaurant/pub on 2 occasions but it was a good amount of time ago. I definitely have not had one of their offerings in a bottle.

Speaking of the bottle – the artwork is quite cool, the spooky pumpkin on the front spewing steam from piping not only looks great but it ties in nicely with the brewery name, thus solidifying the branding. Well done marketing team.

Let’s crack it open and see what we are dealing with. Nice coppery colouring with ample thick and foamy head. Checking the aroma now – wow – the pumpkin is quite nice – its not overly sweet but it definitely smells a bit like pumpkin pie which seems like a good direction to aim for.

The sip: Yum Yum Yum. This is so far my favorite Pumpkin brew this season. It is smooth and creamy; not harsh or overly sweet. Very nice execution of a pumpkin beer indeed. The pumpkin pie aspect is well supported by the mouthfeel and degree of pumpkin and spice.

I encourage you to buy this one and try it for yourself – this beer is excellent.

Elysian – Mens Room Original Red

Light amber brew with several thumbs full of head that laces down the cup. This beer has a fairly nice nose to it but not overly complex. A slightly sweet malt with a gentle bitter finish makes this beer a good one to pair with a wide variety of meals. It would probably lend itself well to a pairing with a burger and fries.

Here it is, in all it’s glory.

Well, what can we say about said pictured brew? We can start with, YUM!
Let’s get into the visual shall we?

The beer poured the colour of black strap molasses and had minimal (perhaps a pinkies worth) head.

Aroma: Totally awesome big rich chocolate nose with liquor like intensity. I love this, its not just chocolate but truly dark chocolate – rich and deep.

Taste: The taste is big and bold, much like the aroma. It’s got the right mix of a beer base with aspects of dark chocolate. The carbonation seems mild, yet it tickles the tongue on the way down. I’d love to try this with a chocolate mousse – perhaps next time.

I think Lighthouse has hit the bullseye on this one, this is a delicious Chocolate Porter and I highly recommend it. If you can, share it with a friend as it’s a bit much to drink all by yourself. Just saying – besides, who doesn’t like a little company?

It would have made more sense to wait and pair this with a blackberry pie or perhaps a blackberry cheese cake, but alas curiosity and a lack of patience got the best of me and I’ve cracked it open before dinner. So bad – I know… But in my defense, if I like it I’ll be sure to try the pairing next time. Promise.

Ok, lets get to it – The pour…
Nice activity in the glass, a dark pour with a bold 2 thumbs worth head that resembles the crema on top of an espresso.

Let’s check the aroma… Wow the aroma is intense, I’m definitely catching the fresh blackberry tang – very authentic.

The first sip – Yum… I like it! It’s not thick and chewy or sweet and syrupy like I expected, in fact, its almost light and summery. It’s still a porter mind you, but I think the blackberry flavoring going on in here could work with a Pilsner beer base.

The beer tastes much like it smells and as I mentioned above, this just confirms it would pair well with the deserts I mentioned.

I like the chances breweries take, and I feel there’s never been a better time to be a beer drinker in BC. I wouldn’t have made the connection of putting blackberries in beer, but somehow it works. This is just another beer in the Cannery Brewing line that I have enjoyed and they’ve earned my purchasing trust with their offerings. Big props again to Sue – thanks for the tasty brew.

I have a confession to make – I’ve got a BIG soft spot for the Belgian beers. I’m not going to lie, with the higher alcohol content and the exotic yeast, it makes for a heady and unique experience for a country fellow like myself raised in a town where mass produced lagers were the only beers to be found at the local store.

Today I sample Lighthouse Brewing’s – Deckhand Belgian Saison. The brew comes in a 650ml bottle and packs a punch at 8% alc/vol. Don’t let that scare you away, this is a tasty brew worth the buy.

The beer pours with ample head and has a peppery and fruity aroma. The big flavour doesn’t hold back and delivers the same spicy, fruity, peppery taste with a slightly sour and dry finish.

This makes for another fine BC microbrew in this Belgian style. If you like this style of beer, I highly recommend my favorite local Saison from Driftwood Brewing called Farmhand Ale.

This beer comes dressed up with wax dripping over the upper 1/4 of the bottle. It’s quite a fun effect until its time to crack it open. Go get that swiss army knife and start cutting because while you make your way to an openable bottle, you’ll be asking yourself, I hope this beer is worth it. And I’m pleased to announce… It is!

The Beer:
650 ML bottle
11.6 alc/vol

Aroma: Sour cherries, raspberry, rich malt, strong alcohol content!

Taste: Big Stout flavour with one hell of a kick.

Verdict: If you like strong stouts, go out and buy this one, it’s perfect for warming up on a cold winter’s night. Because of the high alcohol content, you’ll want to share it with a friend or pace yourself.

This beer comes in a 500ml bottle and weighs in at 5% alc / vol. At the time of pour, the beer had a pinky’s worth of head in the glass. Beers with fruit can benefit or suffer from it. This beer works. It sips an easy drinking mild to medium carbonation level with floral, fruit and honey notes. I would buy this again specifically in the spring or summer and serve it cold.

Cannery Brewing produces some great beers – their Maple Stout is delicious as is their Anarchist Ale and Naramada Brown. Today I sample their Squire Scotch Ale – a tasty tipple indeed. Weighing in at 6.5% alc/vol. in a 650 ml bottle, this Scotch Ale differs quite starkly from the other local Scotch Ale I have consumed (Russell Brewing – A Wee Angry Scotch Ale). When I opened this beer I was expecting a much bolder roasty malt flavour but that is not what I was greeted with. After collecting myself and realizing I wasn’t going to get a repeat of the other microbrew’s Scotch Ale, I prepared myself for a different experience.

After checking the aroma and having a taste, I realized that this beer may be more closely related to Fróech, a heather ale I once had. What I mean to say is, the beer is not overpowered by a roasted malt – sure it’s there, but there’s more subtlety going on here with the yeast and malt that make it a more balanced experience. What this means is you have a very drinkable light scotch ale with more hops and yeast in the flavour than you might find in your usual scotch ale experience.

I enjoyed this beer and while it may not be my goto beer for scotch ale, you couldn’t go wrong bringing this beer to a tasting.

I’ve been thinking for a while on what to do with my 2 domain names and I’ve come to a decision.  deadbeatguitarist.com will now be exclusively for music and beer related topics and all technology related topics will move to stevebaer.com. My reasoning for this is twofold.

1. It opens up deadbeatguitarist.com to people who might have stopped listening or reading due to the Linux content.
2. It builds Google juice and makes me more visible on stevebaer.com as a technologist and acts a bit like a resume.

I also am going to be pragmatic and lose the ogg only feed which limits my audience to just fellow freedom loving geeks. At this point I’m not certain I will continue the mugcast but if I do I’d like to offer ogg and mp3 feeds.  This will likely cause me to lose my listing on oggcastplanet.org which makes me a bit sad but I feel strongly enough to do it anyways. The mugcast as we know it will change. Thanks for your patronage if you were a mugcast listener. Thank you for your support up until now.  New format coming soon.

West Coast Guitar Night is an annual event, the brainchild of innovative Vancouver based acoustic guitarist Les Finnigan. If you haven’t attended and you appreciate solo guitar work, at the risk of not getting a ticket next year, I’m still encouraging you to go to this great event. This West Coast Guitar night like many before it was hosted at the Vancouver East Cultural Center (The Cultch) a great venue for an intimate performance. What a treat it was to be in the balcony as the lighting dimmed and the first ethereal notes began to fill the theatre.  Here is how the evening went down.

The first guitarist to take the stage after Les’s warm welcome was Kent Hillman – Kent played a mix of jazz standards on nylon string guitar in his own unique style. A very fine introduction to the evening.

Next up was Hanh Nguyen who played beautiful classical guitar that nearly brought me to tears. Hanh dedicated her performance to her mother who was a day away from celebrating her 86th birthday. I briefly chatted with Hanh after the show and learned she also did stained glass art and that one of her pieces was on display at the Lees olde fashioned chocolate shop which I used to stop in on occasionally for their delicious chocolate mint bars.

The last performer leading up to the intermission was Les Finnigan. I served coffee to Les for a few years and got to know him and his lovely wife Valeria. I’m a big fan of Les’s work – so much so I asked him to play at my wedding. Even though I know him I’m still a little starstruck talking to him after a performance. Les delivered a great set of his more  rhythmical pieces.  Les also announced he has been hard at work notating his compositions and many of them are now available for purchase.  So if you’ve been puzzled using only your ears – here’s the help you need – I’ve seen him play up close and I still definitely need the sheet music!

After the intermission, Edgar Avelino took the stage. Edgar is a man who professed to be working on album #0. I really enjoyed how he spoke of song history and his rendition of a composition from the Philippines a place where he spend his much of his childhood. Although not a ‘working’ musician he certainly has dedicated much of his time to attain the skill of one.

Simon Fox took the stage next. I was first made aware of Simon’s excellent guitar works by podcaster friend Rich Wielgosz (Bloodthirsty Vegetarians) and when I saw that Simon had relocated to Vancouver from Australia, I was excited to get a chance to see him play live. Simon’s effortless work on the fretboard and his gentle comedy won me over instantly. I’m not the type of person to hang out after the gig and chat with the performers – I’m usually to shy for that sort of thing but Rich said he’d kick my ass if I didn’t get a picture for him with Simon in it, I had to man up. I told this to Simon who immediately smiled at the mention of Rich and his podcast and obliged for the photo and left me with his 3 cd set which provided excellent company for my 1 hour drive back home. Look for review of these CD’s in a future post.

Finally, ending off the night was the double axe attack of flamenco/jazz/metal guitarists John Gilliat & Benjamin Woods. Their percussive rasgueados and lightning fast runs up and down the neck were impressive. I’d also nominate them for most comedic song choice of the evening by covering Yngwie Malmsteen’s I am a Viking.

And so after the hall emptied and the chatter with the artists came to a close, it was time to head for home. I hopped in the car with new musical inspirations and an annual event to add to my calendar. See you all next year at the 14th Annual West Coast Guitar Night.

Deadbeat Guitarist Mugcast #11 – Testing Debian and the pain of a windows box lessened.

Getting comfortable on Windows by bringing the Gnu/Linux feel

1. Gnuwin32 tools (tar, diff, ls, du, df, grep etc).
2. A proper terminal – brings the coolness of transparency , tabs etc… checkout the console project.  ctrl-f1 creates a tab, ctrl-1,ctrl-2 switches to it.
3. Multiple Desktop – I really miss this under Windows and you can get them by installing VirtuaWin - ctrl-alt-left arrow or right arrow or up or down switches to that virtual desktop,  alt-windowkey left arrow or right arrow or up or down arrow moves a window from 1 virtual desktop to the one you specifcy with arrow key.

MUSIC:

Check out – Andy Rehfeldt on his personal site or his youtube channel:  Andy takes popular songs, builds around the original vocal only and re-tracks all the instruments either jazz, metal or funk and hilarity ensues.

Some of the issues that spurred this move were VLC media player crashing out completely when loading up the icecast directory listings, and pidgin locking randomly. I guess the responsible thing to do would have been to report these bugs and await a fix, but I was fairly confident these issues were resolved in more current versions of the software and after upgrading to testing this has indeed proven to be true.

Before closing I want to make the following observations:

• Stable means mostly predictable rather than free of bugs.
• The Net-Install rocks – setting up the system from the ground up the way you want it is very cool.
• The debian wiki is awesome – full of great info.
• XFCE and Gnome for me are more usable than KDE in terms of workflow.
• If you encounter an issue of not being able to mount sd cards after installing from an sd card – see below for solve.

su -c ‘vim /etc/fstab’
This line below prevented me from mounting sd cards. no cdrom on netbook, commented it out and now everything detects fine.
#/dev/sdb1 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

So a week in Debian stable leads me back to Debian testing. It wasn’t the end I expected when I embarked on this journey, but I guess moving out to a smaller town hasn’t completely changed my computing decisions.

Slackware 13.37 is now out and ready for the installing. Here’s a quick rundown of my recent experience installing and setting up the latest Slackware Linux.

I went hunting for my IDE to USB cable and a DVD drive and got the 32 bit torrent ISO image downloading, off to bed.

Next day: Hooked everything up to the netbook, burned the ISO, inserted the burned DVD, booted and ran the installer. Ah – the familiar ncurses interface is still here, surprised – nope, put off? Not really.

Installation is finished… Awesome, KDE runs alright but wait – what gives, no wifi??

Ok, I got sbopkg rockin’ and grabbed the broadcom-sta package.. Also installed wicd (manage wifi through gui) from /extra. Hmm still no wifi – ahhh, google informs me I have to name the interface to eth1 in the wicd gui config -see screenie below:

Ok got the wifi rockin’ but I was finding it annoying to wait for KDE – it’s not that KDE is slow per se, its that on this hardware HP Mininote (earlier atom processor and 1gb ram) its a tad overkill. What to do what to do, let’s drop it down to fluxbox.

I found a nice slackware wallpaper, used sbopkg to install conky and …. now we’re talkin’ nice minmal desktop – black background, conky…  Nerds paradise.

What’s missing, AHH! keyboard shortcuts to my most used apps to limit the need for mousing – yup yup, fluxbox makes it easy – I edit the .~/.fluxbox/keys file and put in some entries to run pidgin, wicd-gtk, qtwitter, konsole,…

As an aside the fluxbox wiki makes it perfectly clear how to edit the keys file – very straight forward and kudos to them for it.

I also edited the ~/.fluxbox/startup file to auto start frequently used apps and tray icons (volume control etc) see below:

Alright now we are movin’, got a nice desktop environment that’s fast and under my control. What’s next – Install some more apps – qtractor, ardour, qjackctl, audio plugins, auteur, kdenlive – audio and video tools, Sweet. I’m feeling right at home.

So – to those that love Slackware, enjoy the new release. To those that haven’t tried Slackware, you might want to give it a look. And, to those that have been away for a while – Slackware is just as charming as it ever was – with slackpkg to maintain security updates and patches, and sbopkg to manage the extras that don’t come with slackware, including queue files to meet all the dependencies, you can get a very complete experience under Slackware – in fact there’s never been a better time to be a slacker I’d venture to say. Get your download started – pour yourself a beer, and get ready to slack.

Summary: A very carbonated strong Belgian ale – not as sweet or flavorful as some of its peers (gulden draak and mardesous) but its nice in that regard. A pleasant beer to pair with cheeses. A beer that’s always good to have in the fridge.

For those interested in a free and open source Tracker style music app that runs on Windows, Linux, Amiga OS4, AROS and Mac OSX,
check out Protrekkr. It’s based off of the same original codebase Renoise was based on – which is from a app called NoiseTrekker.
To get it running under KXStudio Linux 10.04:
1. Install libjackasyn0
2. Download and unzip source unzip modules.zip file into modules dir
3. Open a terminal window in that location and issue: jacklaunch ./ptk_linux
4. Have fun.

LINUX:
Android pick: Comes from [lsd] in #opensourcemusicians Chordbot. Chordbot is a slick application that lets you build chord progressions and decide on styles and time signatures to play it back

Android pick: Winamp (beta) media player. Yes, the much loved player on Windows that many of us got familiar with back on Windows 98 and was the defacto player for many years is now on Android. Unlike the current Windows version, the Android version is very fast. Although it’s a ‘beta’ app, it has yet to crash on me.

Summary: Wow – that is so different… Lavender? Rose Pedal? Some kind of floral action going on here. Comes in a cool and funky bottle, but don’t let this fool you – the styling is all upscale and so are the ingredients but woah what a weird tasting beer – and not in a good way.
Letter grade: C – This is weird stuff.

Cool documentary on the craft brewers movement and the (at the time) big 3 American brewing companies trying to squash it. Good film – very upsetting to see yet again how large corporations are evil but you can’t keep a good craft brewer down – thankfully.

Make Air not War – Follow American Air Guitar champions to the Finnish world finals. Great movie – exciting and fun – check it out. I found myself surprised by how much performance art their is in Air Guitar.

Qtractor the other big Linux daw.. . Cool beans – this episode is done in it. Some features I like are the ability to track in ogg or flac codecs as opposed to straight wav file – audio purists be damned. This allows you to save hard disk space if you aren’t tracking on very good equipment. Another cool feature is the ability to archive a session to a zip file from within Qtractor itself. It creates a qtz file which has all the raw audio files and the xml file of changes to them. This feature is in the current svn repository as of November 7/2010. The main use case for this feature is that it allows you to move an entire session from 1 computer to another with ease.

Android Pick : Jamendo streaming music app. Check out the top 100 songs on Jamendo – some great material in there.

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the linux audio distribution called KXStudio and that I think it’s where the future of Linux Audio should be heading. The distro while pretty solid does have a few slight annoyances – namely – I had breakage occur fairly regularly with my Wifi on my HP Mininote 110 netbook. I spoke to Falktx about this and he gave me the following suggestion and it seems to have resolved my networking issues.

Open a terminal window and key in the following and press Enter afterwards:

sudo apt-get install plasma-widget-networkmanagement

You will notice it removes the kde network manager and uses this widget in its place. Log out and log back into KXStudio and you will then be able to add a widget to your taskbar called NetworkManager.

Presto – wifi now is reliable again and the widget looks cooler anyways

Addendum: If that isn’t working out for you, as of Nov. 4th /2010 updates you can install wicd instead : sudo apt-get install wicd , after that is finished, issue sudo apt-get remove network-manager network-manager-kde plasma-widget-networkmanagement … reboot and wicd should autolaunch on startup.

Aroma: Intoxicating mix of sweet roasty malt and hops
Summary: Provides a big beer in the mouth – more weight then most IPA’s – I like that its less citrus like and has more roasty malt goodness then I was expecting.
Letter grade: A – Hard to beat!

Colour: Pours a copperish colour with very little head.
Aroma: Hops and pineapple.
Summary: A delicious IPA with big hops and a hint of pineapple, this has got to be one of my favorite local IPA’s – it’s not overly citrusy or sweet and the hops provide a nice bitterness. Very nice balance.
Letter grade: A – Hard to beat!

Russell Brewing - A Wee Angry Scotch Ale

From what I can see, Falktx – the maintainer for the distro is working very hard testing and packaging the latest apps – Jack2, VST support,  Ladish and Ardour3, Mumble with Jack support are just a few examples.  He is also doing things like patching older applications here and there – an example being the gNinjam client which no longer compiled under Ubuntu Lucid.  I expect to see other projects such as Ubuntu Studio benefit from the experimental playground that is KXStudio.

Chiefly, the most recent change in direction to run audio from Alsa to Jack vs Alsa to PulseAudio to Jack as detailed here:

While it does appear that PulseAudio bridge is still running, it is not the preferred way to go unless you have to.

So, if Alsa is layer 1, and PulseAudio sits upon layer 2, then Jack is either on layer 2 (no PulseAudio – just Alsa then Jack) or layer 3 which would be Alsa -> PulseAudio -> Jack.  The more layers involved or the more complexity involved.

For those that don’t understand what all this means.  Alsa is one of the main sound servers running under Linux to handle audio, and if you have an Alsa supported sound card you could get sound with just Alsa.  Alsa however doesn’t handle situations where more then 1 application wants the audio card at the same time, therefore workarounds such as PulseAudio which is a layer above Alsa allows for the sound card to be accessed by many applications at the same time and offers volumes controls from each application in a PulseAudio mixer as well as the ability to stream audio on the network.

PulseAudio has come under fire (unjustly or justly – you decide) for not being a very good resolution to the common challenges that have plagued Linux audio for years.  Be as it may, PulseAudio under KXStudio is stable for me under the Generic and the Lowlatency kernel, so I can’t complain at all – it runs stable.

Which brings me to the part of the post I am most excited to announce.

As a co-host of The Open Source Musician Podcast separated from the host by geography, we had relied on a closed source application to handle our phone call to one another.   This was always a sore spot because all the other software we use is Open Source, however this was one last hurdle we couldn’t get over.  Recently this all changed and we did our first fully open broadcast Friday using the GPL’d VOIP client called Mumble.  The Mumble team has added experimental integration with JACK (Jack Audio Connection Kit).  This completely solves our VOIP issues.  The quality is excellent and Dan and myself can record a good track of local audio and each other’s VOIP call into its own track in the Ardour DAW software, we stream this all out on the internets and it all takes place with just 1 PC on each end – no double-ender, no extra hardware – it’s all in the box and its pure gold.

So life is peachy.  Our audio woes are virtually non-existant.  A big thanks goes to Falktx of KXStudio for packaging this experimental Mumble version,  and of course to the Mumble developers themselves for making this all possible!

I must confess in advance to not being a KDE 4 fan in the past,  but after living the dream in KXStudio, I’m hitting the KDE Koolaid and hitting it hard.

Sure, I could rave on about the beauty of the desktop environment and how it really enhances my work flow, but I’ll move onto the main reason I think this is an important milestone in Linux audio.

What really interests me most is that the developer (Falktx) a young fellow from Portugal has made the decision to make the Jack audio server run at boot.  No messing around.  This is the kind of gutsy move I’ve been waiting for to upgrade my Desktop box.

Rest assured that whatever doesn’t run through the Jack audio sound server will run through the Pulseaudio to Jack bridge and you’ll be ready to rock those video sound samples, SIP or mumble VOIP calls into an armed track in Ardour.

Not only has Falktx included the latest audio applications – too numerous to list, he’s also given you Abigoni’s low latency kernel (through PPA), Ardourvst (vst support enabled Ardour through the wine emulation layer),  free VST plugins, the LADI tools for session management, and you could also take a peak at  Ardour 3.0 with ease – it’s in the repos and will install to /opt so you don’t need to worry about it borking whats working.

KXStudio has both 32 bit and 64 bit DVD ISO’s as well as NETinstall disks, and a recent revision to the distro brings some important fixes rolling it up to its current 10.04.1 release.

I have flip flopped between running audio specific Linux distributions and regular Linux distributions fitted with the audio applications of my choice and configured the way I like.  There are pros and cons to both methods, the pros being everything is setup for you, and the cons being, well -  everything is setup for you and it may not be exactly as you like.

KXStudio for me makes the best case for a pre-configured best of breed Linux Audio Distribution and I see no reason to remove it from my laptop, and many reasons to consider dropping it onto my Desktop.

I took this screenshot because it shows one of the compelling reasons for me to switch – the latest jack and the pulse to jack bridge which will allow for a skype free podcast.   Very important to note as of now that the PULSE-JACK bridge is only reliable in a NON RT kernel, so Generic and Low Latency are fine, but RT will crash PULSE-JACK after a minute of running.

First I had to ask myself what that really meant.  I think to sum it up it would be someone who writes amazing poetry and puts it to good music.

There really is only one Leonard Cohen or say, one Bob Dylan.

However, there are  I think good lyricists/musicians, Ben Folds comes to mind as does Hawksley Workman.

I do find something  about this question interesting, but it’s not the hunt for a new Leonard Cohen, its more to do with the enjoyment of music based on the strength of the lyrics.

Lyrics to the song are very important to some people,  and if the lyrics aren’t good, the song won’t interest them – yet to me, the melody,  interesting chords and phrasing are of greater importance.

The way the words tumble out and mingle with each other, not so much the lyrical content, or the way the melody sits against the chords are of primary interest to me.  This is not to say the lyrics aren’t important to me, I can appreciate good lyrics when I see/hear them and that adds to the overall tastiness of a song, but I won’t hate on a song just because the words aren’t clever.

That said, I’m sure there is some overlap and sliding scale because people who value the lyrics greatly will still reject a song with good lyrics if music is terrible to the  ears.

In fact, this segues a bit is into my new mission. To analyze the ingredients of a memorable pop song – in fact – I want to write an unabashedly catchy pop song.   Like sugary cereal or cotton candy – almost zero substance to it but addictive like crack.

The next post will detail my analysis of what key ingredients are needed to make a catchy pop song,  I must add – by identifying what they are, I can’t guarantee I will come up with a good poppy song, but it will be an interesting exercise, and I will share my findings in the form of a song.
