Having been writing blog for sometime and most of the time I have been trying to keep posting a weekly basis, this would be my last post before taking a long break. Writing blog does give pleasure of sharing experience. Of course, some are great, some are enjoyable, and some are unacceptable. Living in the world of social media nowadays, I, personally, do often feel somewhat uncomfortable despite writing the blog.

Thus, I have come to decision that this post would be my last blogging for now before returning in the future. Just need sometime off really. More time on dining table with beloved one and family with flashing photos. Of course, there will still be one or two for instagram and things like that. Anyway, for this blog I will be comparing a few of those the local has enjoyed for long while the trendy stuff has as well penetrated the market especially for those young generation. All of which are Tubtim Krob @ Wongwein Yai, Strawberry Cheesecake Kakigori @ After You, Coconut Ice-cream of Pa Na @ Hua Ro Market in Ayutthaya, and Tiramisu Soft-serve of Kiss the Tiramisu @ Siam Square.

First of all, it is Tubtim Krob at Wongwein Yai. Tubtim krob has long been one of favourite desserts for generations. These ruby like water chestnut are just crisp and sweet and when combined with a touch of syrup and coconut milk, it is just awesomely delicious. I, personally, can go on and on with this dessert meal after meals. However, it seems to be freaking hard these days to find a good store/stall that sells nice one. Just when I was a kid, a nice tubtim krob can be found like within the neighbourhood.

Anyway, this one at Wongwein Yai is a famous one and is just wonderful. Love the freshness and crunchiness of water chestnut. The sweetness of syrup is just right. Having along with salim or coconut is equally pleasant. Going there can be difficult but this is not a hurdle for me at all when I feel like one.

P.S. They also serve vermicelli with fish curry and soft-boiled egg (Kanom Jeen Nam Ya).

For Strawberry Cheesecake Kakigori at After You, I have to say that this might be the only one at After You I would actually eat. As posted a long while ago, After You has never been my choice of dessert. With those toast soaked with yakky melted butter and ice-cream that is full of esters aroma, I will never touch it. But this kakigori is another story in my view. They do it much nicer that others. The ice flakes are creamier and with more flavour. If there is more of the strawberry sauce, it would be more balance. By the way, kakigori is just shaved ice in Japanese. You may also find the word Bing Su in Korean shop. But if you go on street food in Thailand, it would simply be Nam Kang Sai (น้ำแข็งไส). They are all the same word but just different marketing terms.

Anyway, at the price of THB235 (if I recall it correctly) for just shaved ice and strawberry sauce is way too excessive in my view, not even counting in the long queue you will have to encounter. For me, I surely rather go for 8 of tubtim krob than just a bowl of this shaved ice. But it has been a trend in Thai for the last year and still now. You can find it anywhere. Wish the younger generations will realise the goodie of old time local food.

Strawberry Cheesecake Kakigori (THB235)

If ones have been following my blog, facebook, or instagram, they would recognise that I am one of the ice-cream lovers. Back in May when I had a chance to visit the old capital of Thailand, Ayutthaya, I did not hesitate to search for a nice ice-cream stall. Indeed I did find one at Talad Hua Ro (Hua Ro Market) which sells the classic coconut ice-cream: Pa Na.

Na is the name of the owner and Pa means Aunty in Thai. This ice-cream stall is just a tiny corner in the market. There are perhaps less than 10 seats for you to sit while enjoying your treat. At the price of THB30, you get a delicious cup of coconut ice-cream with your choices of topping. My favourite would have to include sticky rice and candied palm seed definitely. If you want to go for a more rustic one, have them on bread. Surely classic and heavenly delicious. The best parts of Pa Na Coconut Ice-cream are just everything. The ice-cream is creamy and yummy. The toppings come in variety. The local atmosphere is priceless. Everyone is friendly. Hey, THB30 for coconut ice-cream is expensive??? Hell no for me. It is a treat for me.

Now it comes to a posher side of ice-cream. The Korean brand, Kiss The Tiramisu, offers just one choice (as far as I'm aware of at the time of tasting): Tiramisu Ice-cream of course. However, they recently offer Banamisu flavour also. Suppose it is banana flavour. The cost of savouring this Korean soft-serve would be THB159 for one. Good god!!! THB159 and it does not even satisfy me. Ok, it is not that bad, enjoyable at a certain level. But please, it is tiramisu, not vanilla soft-serve with a dash of chocolate flavour. Oh, did I miss out the coffee part. No, I did not. I barely sensed the coffee bit when eating. Give me back my THB159 pleaseeeeee.

Anyway, the point I would like to make here is nowadays we seem to forget all those nostalgic goodies and tend to be lured with those pricey fancy stuff. Personal opinion, I have to make it here. Not trying to discredit anyone here but purely pointing out that the local food can be equally great and at a more realistic price. Just don't forget them before they are no longer available.

Well, wish everyone enjoy their savouring. I will surely do. Sometime may be in any restaurants. Sometime may be strolling around on streets finding the best kept secret. Travelling the world to search for local culture could also be. Sipping Barolo while typing facebook can be a regular activity or swallowing in glasses of Burgundy somewhere on earth. Instagram with glasses of Champagne in someone backyard. Surely most of the time, dining either opposite or by the side of Deadly Bunny. Or even grilling my own steak, tossing pasta, blending soup, or baking something in my tiny orange kitchen. Bon appetite to you all till we meet again.

When I feel like ice-cream!!!

Often I crave for ice-cream. Swensen's is usually the typical joint that can be found anywhere and it is decent enough, I have to admit. Technology these days seems to go beyond our imagination. Not the ingredients and technique it supposed to be but yield similar result. Salute. However, there are 2 small places in Bangkok that I from time to time have to stop by to fill by blood vein with more sugar and fat. One is in Soi Sukhumvit 39 called Ampersand and the other one is tucked in a small Soi on Charoen Krung Road which is Gelato Finale. Both are delicious but different in someway.

Ampersand Boutique is just a small joint in Baan Prompong Building in Soi Sukhumvit 39. This ice-cream parlour seems to position itself a little bit towards homemade/high-end stuff. I have to say it is wonderful enough to keep insulin keeps working. Texture wise they are firm and full. Not too sweet is a plus point for me. Personally, smoothness is the point they could improve to make their ice-cream beyond satisfaction. Recommend to try their classic range to start off.

Gelato Finale is perhaps my favourite found of the year. Tucked in a small Soi of Charoen Krung 46 where anybody would expect nothing like this to be there. It is right next to Bang Rak Market. Driving there can be hassle in finding parking lots. However, BTS can be convenient enough.

I gotta say that this place has decorated to bring the ambient to a friendly point. It is comfy too. For a delicious scoop of gelato at the price of THB60 in Bangkok, I would say it is a bargain. This is Bangkok, not Italy. Usually expect something expensive not for value. But it is not the case here. Texture of each scoop is just soft, tender, smooth, and most of all creamy. If it is near my house, I could drop by daily. I would recommend you to try just anything here. Finale, it is!!!

Appearance: Dark ruby.

Aroma: Sweet oak, coffee, cassis, floral and spices.

Palate: Deep and full in the mouth. Sweet and smooth but somewhat rigid tannins with balance acidity. Notes of black berries and spices.

Somewhat modern but lovely. It is accessible at this stage but more time in bottle should be a reward. Otherwise, pop up an hour before sipping. Its strong structure will support long aging. Accompany with rich food to enjoy. Cheers.

Khao Mok or Biryani is something rather common in Thailand. Thanks to the magic of mixing spices of Muslim culture. However, a really good one and authentic can be difficult to find. Here on Thanon Charoen Krung and opposite Charoenkrung Pracharak Hospital, Khun Lek who is the owner of this tiny joint, Khun Lek Khao Mok Kai, produces such wonderful khao mok.

Khun Lek operates her shop only during lunch time and I can tell you that things run out pretty fast. Make sure you are here not too late if you don't want to get disappointed of something running out. As mentioned, it is a small place and only around 10 tables, so be patient. To get here, driving might be your only choice as there is no major public transport around except bus.

Typically, khao mok with chicken is common. But I tend to go for something with beef each time I visit as you won't often see khao mok with beef around. If you fancy combination, they can also do it for you for example Khao Mok Chicken + Beef - ข้าวหมกไก่ + เนื้อ (10/10). I have to really say it is fantastic. The quality of rice that has been prepared well with spices is top of the class. Chicken and beef were as well tender, juicy, and flavourful. In case of fancy something rare, Khao Mok Mutton - ข้าวหมกแพะ (9/10) could be your pick. Again very nice with its distinct character. Among chicken, beef, and mutton, my top pick would have been beef. To couple the meal Beef Soup - ซุปเนื้อ (8/10) was also a good choice. With a bit of spice from chili, it just completed the meal.

Personally, khao mok of Khun Lek is one of the best in town. So bon appetit if you are visiting Khun Lek.

During bank holiday break, we had a chance to visit Rayong and indeed we did spend our opportunity to try out the local stuff. Baan Malako was one of them and is the one we really appreciated. It is a very local joint that serves noodle with spotted mackerel. I have to say it is really fabulous. So simple, so delicious, and so local. The place is spacious and I would guess it can accommodate 50 people easily. Also you don't have to worry about parking space as there are many parking lots right in front of the place. Only problem is they do not serve dinner (T<>T)"

The Menu

Since this was our first visit, so we did decide to try both with and without soup: Stewed Noodle with Mackerel Fillet and Fish Ball (10/10) and Fish Ball with Fillet and Noodle in Soup (9/10). I have to admit that I could be a little biased towards stewed noodle as I personally not the kind of soup-eater. Nevertheless, both were simply delicious. They were flavourful. The fillet were fresh and tender. Usually mackerel can be somewhat tough but it was not the case here. We did as well give a go with Pad Thai with Spotted Mackerel - ผัดไทยปลาอินทรี (8/10) and it did not disappoint us at all. The vermicelli noodle used for pad thai (Chan Noodle - เส้นจันท์) was originally from Chanthaburi Province which is right next to Rayong. So I would presume that the very best Chan Noodle must be from this area. Yes, the noodle here was wonderful. Tender but also possesses some chewiness. Excellent texture. Combining with great local ingredients and fresh mackerel fillet, this was a wow dish. Without doubt, Baan Malako will be another in my list to revisit every other time when popping by Rayong.

Appearance: Light yellow straw.

Aroma: Mild citrus. Stony, rocky and smoky.

Palate: Fresh and clean on the palate with lovely minerally stony touch. Lingering notes of citrus and apple. Vibrant acidity. Structured and depth as well. Wonderful complexity and length.

Love the stony touch of this wine. Great concentration with fruits too. Easily a great wine for everyday either with food or as aperitif. It would surely worth waiting for some development. But why wait. It is already delicious. Salute!!!

Suhring, a modern German cuisine run by Suhring brothers, launched epically during early 2016. I believe Suhring is under the same group of sponsors as the famous Gaggan. That explains implicitly the logic behind its style of food. Without doubt, food here come in those small portions and presented using modern technique.

Personally, this is my first chance to visit this place and it was during Albert Bichot wine dinner. The overall impression with this place was good but not great. Some dishes were delicious but some missed elements here and there. But the wine were definitely gorgeous. Apart from food, I have to admit that the ambient of this place is really lovely. It is a house-converted restaurant. It is spacious and with beautiful garden. The downside about this place is its location. It is nowhere near public transport access point. Hence, driving or taxi remain your only choices. For those who drive, beware of limited parking space. Otherwise, you will have to park along the Soi.

As for wine, the line up for the night were:

Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis 1er Cru les Vaucoupins 2013 (92/100): Lovely Chablis with early access. Fresh with white fruits elements.

Domaine Long-Depaquit Chablis Grand Cru Moutonne Monopole 2007 (93/100): Richer and deeper than the former one. Notes of mineral and floral. Wine for food it is.

Chateau Gris Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru 2011 (93/100): Sweet black fruits and oak harmony. Perfect for meat dishes. Expect more in a few years time.

Domaine du Pavillon Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Clos des Marechaudes 2013 (93/100): Opulent with earth and fruit forward. Give it time to reveal its class.

Domaine du Clos Frantin Echezeaux Grand Cru 2012 (94/100): Definitely harmony in the glass. But it is a long way for this guy before full enjoyment.

Albert Bichot line up for the night

The dinner started with those small bites / snacks / amuse bouche (or whatever you may call). Spiced Tomato Cracker with Fermented Garlic (7/10) did show nice taste of tomato along with spices but Avocado, Smoked Eel and Horseradish (7/10) was somewhat confusing. It was delicious but could not really detect the distinct character of avocado and eel. On the other hand, Frankfurter Grüne Soße (6/10) was presented gorgeously but the taste did live up with its look in my humble view. Taste of herb, yes. Unbalance, yes also. As for, Duck Liver, Chicken Skin, and Sea Buckthorn (6/10), the sea buckthorn was the weak link in this case. It didn't seem to pair well with pate though the overall texture was lovely.

The last nibble came with a more fruitful size: Pork Knuckle Sandwich, Sauerkraut, and Marjoram (7/10). Rather nice actually. A bit of sauerkraut would be even better. Tender texture with flavourful taste. Moving on to a more proper size dish. Simmentaler Roast Beef, Pickled Mackerel, Capers, Beetroot, and Apple (7/10) would be a lovely one if it had come without mackerel. The combination of beef and mackerel in the same plate seemed confusing though the beetroot and apple cut well through fattiness of beef. The strange thing is this dish was paired with Chablis. Not a perfect pair but interesting. Then we had a plate to share: Cold Cuts & Pickles: German Rustic Sour Dough + Cultured Butter + Griebenschmalz | Soft-Pretzel + Obatzda (8/10). Wonderful indeed. The sour dough was outstanding. I would not pay much attention on sauces here: cultured butter, griebenschmalz, and obatzda. I think when the bread is nice, just plain butter could already bring you to heaven so as cold cuts.

Moving on to heavier dishes. Celeriac Tortellini with Summer Truffle (9/10) would be the highlight of the meal in my view. Beautiful aroma of truffle. The tortellini was as well perfectly executed. Love this one. It seems the Italian dish performed much better than the German ones tonight. Next was Hungarian Duck Roasted on the Bone, Pumpkin and Lavender Jus (9/10) which was almost equally great as the tortellini. Flavourful and tender. Sweetness of pumpkin also cut through the flavour of jus well. Execution and ingredients are the keys here, I think. For lamb dish, it was Salt Meadow Lamb from Piet Van Den Berg, Beans, Saffron, and Herbs (7/10). Not extraordinary but enjoyable here. Honestly, saffron is too elegant and it looked as though unique aroma of lamb overwhelmed the great saffron here.

Here comes the dessert. I have to say that dessert were superb here. Both Buttermilk, Cucumber, Gin, and Tonic (8/10) and Waldorf Salad (9/10) were just delicious. The cucumber one cleansed the palate pretty well. So simple, classic, and refreshing. For waldorf salad, this was a great transformation from salad to dessert. Freshness is the key, again. The crumb added 3rd dimension to creaminess of dessert. The meal then ended with a small bite of doughnut (if I recall correctly).

All in all, this is a restaurant for experience but not for often visit in my view. Nice and enjoyable but it lacks here and there and the meal can be very long.

This is more on the elegant side in my view. A nice experience but not a wow one for me. It was fresh, it was smooth, and it was seductive. But it was not attractive. There are some missing elements and structure. Impressive effort and charm though. Accessible now and at least in the short term future.

Mitsumori may be related to the Ootoya chain of Japan. But it is a step forward in term of quality and delicacy. For this one in Bangkok, it is located within Soi Sukhumvit 23. It might be a little hassle for those who do not drive here as the location is somewhat deep into the soi: cc. 8 to 10 minutes walk (600 meters) from the entrance of Soi Sukhumvit 23. Nevertheless, driving here might equally gives some headache when the place is crowded as there are less than 10 lots for parking.

What surely calm my nerve down about quality of this Mitsumori when I walked in was the Japanese expats crowd. I did not see many local here. More than 80% was Japanese. The very first word in my mind then was "authentic". And yes, it did not disappoint us at all. I believe, apart from quality of ingredient, Mitsumori shows excellent bbq range like yakitori. The lunch set is as well superb. As for atmosphere, it is comfy enough with Japanese feeling. There is a counter of around 10 seats in the centre of the restaurant where guests can enjoy chef performing bbq.

It was one fine lunch when we visited Mitsumori. We had Oyakojyu - ข้าวหน้าไก่บ้านโอยาโกะ (7/10), which is simply grilled chicken cooking in a similar way to katsudon, and Hot Soba with Sakura Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura (7/10). Rest assure, quality was indeed great. Chicken was tender and flavouful. Alongside condiments were delicious too. The soba had nice texture. The one with chewiness but soft as noodle should be. Simply classic and lovely. The lunch set also comes with a choice of coffee or tea. A set is certainly wonderful enough to fulfill one's need for a meal. Will surely return.

Definitely a gorgeous bottle of Brunello. This is something unique. Starting to be accessible but will live its life for long. Love the earthy tone while fruits and acidity still support its structure. Elegant one. It is hard indeed to keep my hands off. Grazie!!!

Recently launched, Saneh Jaan, at the new culinary destination of Sindhorn Tower on Thanon Witthayu: The Glasshouse. It hit the town much later than its neighbours which had been around since last year. What I can say about this Thai restaurant is definitely rather positive. It is fabulously charming as its name: Saneh means charm in Thai.

The atmosphere would have already stunned you upon walking in. Well decorated and rather elegant. Thanks god, it is not in modern style but contemporary. For some, the atmosphere can be a little too heavy to their liking. Just for a tip for both local and tourists, though the place does not state dress code, as I am aware of, it is still best to dress in a smart way rather than casual, especially shorts.

As for food, I personally like it. It is not those kind of royal cuisine nor modern nor Thai food for foreigners nor those harsh and spicy. What I like about food here is its moderation. I mean each dish is rich to the taste but not those highly hot and spicy such that foreigners can consume while the local can still enjoy.

We began our meal with a bit of cocktail and mocktails to follow during the course. For cocktail, it had to be Margarita definitely. My all time favourite classic cocktail. I did try Classic Margarita and Blue Margarita (THB220 each). The difference between the two is the use of spirit: Classic one uses Triple Sec while the Blue one uses Blue Curacao. Not bad but not good. I would prefer the one without sugar syrup. To me a good Margarita needs no syrup but a decent quality of Tequila. There was also a small portion of amuse bouche being served before the actual meal. For this visit, it was ปลาแห้งแตงโม (pla haeng tang mo) - Watermelon with Sweet Dried-fish and Crispy Shallot. I like its freshness and sweetness that boosted up the appetite.

For the meal, we had กากหมูผัดพริกขิง - Stir-fried Pork Rind with Chili, Salty Egg and Kiffir Lime (8/10), แกงรัญจวน - Gaeng Run Juan (8/10), and กุ้งแม่น้ำทอดกระเทียมพริกไทย - Deep-fried Fresh Water Prawns Marinated in Garlic, Pepper, and Coriander Root (6/10). All of which were nice but stir-fried pork rind with chili, salty egg and kiffir lime seems to stand out. To me, the best way of stir-frying cow-pea is by using pork fat or lard. It would bring out the flavour nicely. In this case, pork rind did its job pretty well. Gaeng Run Juan was pretty delicious too. Love the spices and hot touch of the soup which was not overwhelming. However, deep-fried prawns did not meet my expectation. I would love to see better execution for prawn. Prawn is a delicate ingredient and needs attention at cooking in my view. The texture should be crisp but yet tender. For this one, it was the texture that could be improved. In term of taste, it was enjoyable. Rather local taste.

A really good job for this Etna by Terre Nere. Pretty much aromatic like the Burgundian but ways lower price. It is even ready for enjoying at its early life. I personally would not mind stocking up as table wine at all. If you like your wine a bit of ripe and bright, this is a candidate for you.

Ayutthaya is not all about river prawn. When talking about visiting Ayutthaya, the first question that would literally pop up from everyone would be "going there for grilled river prawn?". Since when that Ayutthaya, the old capital city of Thailand, has become river prawn destination.

During early May 2016, we had a brief chance to visit Ayutthaya for a couple of days. After had sought opinion from local friend, we did hesitate at all to stop by Nai Lieak Beef Noodle as our first destination of the trip. Beef noodle seems to be another famous food in Ayutthaya and this local store does it exceptionally well. Nai Lieak is located on Thanon Pa Maphrao; towards the end of the road. Beware of parking space, it can be very difficult to find a parking lot along the road, especially, during public holiday.

If you have a chance to visit Nai Lieak, I would recommend to try both with and without soup. Personally, I would go for stewed noodle for the first one. Then follow with non-noodle braised beef soup. Both are equally delicious. The stewed noodle gives simpler touch in mouth-feel, while soup based one shows more complexity in flavour from the soup. I like the way that notes of spices explode from the soup. The beef has also been wonderfully braised giving tenderness and flavour.

For me, this is a destination that cannot be overlooked. So classic. Yet at a budget too. Love to go back there.

Often we visit Chon Buri and every time we tend to find a new place to visit for afternoon coffee / tea / dessert as there seem to be many of them around nowadays. This time we accidentally popped by Namon Nomwan in Mueang District. When we had arrived at the destination, we were rather surprise with its large scale area. Plenty of parking spaces and seating areas. On a good day, you may choose to sit outside enjoying al fresco. You might be irritating with heat and mosquito, then go for indoor seats with air conditioning.

Generally speaking, nothing here is great but they are enjoyable. Rather nicely presented with ok taste. Pricing is not excessive too. Order come fast. Below are what we had. I personally enjoyed Toast with Cocoa Powder. Overall, this is quite a good place for afternoon hanging out with friends in Mueang District of Chon Buri.

Opulent bottle of Barolo that is ready for drinking since its early stage. Matured in various size of barrels. Not exactly modern nor traditional. I wouldn't say it is elegant but would be happy to consume this wine regularly. Nice work.

It has been long since my very last visit to this wine bar, Scarlett. I, personally, admire the atmosphere of this place: the view of Bangkok is wonderful and the ambient is friendly. Food is as well decent and enjoyable. It is not those so-damn-good joint but nice enough to fulfill your casual Friday night with your party. If you like al fresco, they do have spaces for you too. Selection of food is varied from AOC cheese range to Iberico ham to classic pasta dishes and to everyone favourite steak cuts. By the way, their choice of wine and beverage is quite good as well, both in term of range and pricing. If you are to visit this 37th-floor-restaurant of Pullman Bangkok Hotel G, I would recommend advance booking to avoid disappointment.

This time we had been invited to try dishes made from Kobe Wine Beef which is available until June 30th 2016. Just a bit about Kobe Wine Beef. It is called Kobe Wine Beef because these cattles (Tajima Gyu) are fed with grapes pomace (marc) in addition to typical corns, oats, and wheat and are raised in Hyogo Prefecture. During the night, Takeshi Yamada, who is the guy behind these little good things, also presented the insight of his production himself. In my humble opinion, Kobe Wine Beef gives excellent texture as in other Japanese wagyu but with a little firmer texture and sweet juicy palate.

The very first one to arrive was not beef but it's something to boost appetite: Paleta Iberica de Bellota (6/10) (I think I heard it rightly, fingers crossed). It came along with pickles. I do like the texture of this iberico ham but the flavour was somewhat too salty to my liking. Then it came the first Kobe Wine Beef dish: Kobe Wine Beef Carpaccio, Imperial Caviar and Turnip Mousse (6/10) from rump. The flavour of this carpaccio was excellent and when combined with spiciness of the mousse and saltiness of carviar, it came out balance nicely. The bit that let this dish down was the choice of beef part in my opinion. The rump was the choice instead of tenderloin. Thus, it was a little chewy on the part connected with fat lines. Kobe Wine Beef Tartare with Soft Quail Boiled Egg (7/10) was next from the raw range. I, personally, particularly like this one. It brought out the natural flavour of Kobe Wine Beef in a lovely way. Tender and rich on the palate. The seasoning was not too sumptuous that it would overwhelm beef flavour. Nevertheless, the boiled egg did not keep up with the overall picture. I would prefer it raw in this case.

Next one was a disappointment in my view. It was Kobe Wine Beef Sate with Peanut Sauce (3/10) and this was the chuck part. When thinking of satay / sate, the very first 3 words that would pop up in my mind would be tenderness, spices, and peanut. Here it lacked tenderness. With beef, it simply has to be medium / medium-rare. When it is overcooked, it would utterly be chewy. As for flavour, beef flavour here seemed to play a bigger role than spices. Oh yes, the juicy fatty thing that ran out tasted wonderfully but it didn't answer the character of the dish. Lastly, the peanut sauce lacked texture and a bit too sweet. On the other hand, Kobe Wine Beef Burger (6/10) was rather nice. This came with red wine caramelised onions, roasted garlic aioli, Cheddar cheese, and served alongside truffle fries. Love the juiciness of the patty. Only problem for me for this burger would be the bun. It was too fluffy as though it was not the typical brioche, which should be soft and buttery. Otherwise, a nice one.

Shabu-style Kobe Wine Beef, Double Boiled Beef Consomme, Porcini, and Baby Roots (6/10) was next and it was made with rump. This looked definitely like Japanese but it didn't taste as expected. If I were asked whether this was nice. I would say enjoyable but confused. The flavour that exploded out extremely was mushroom and this overshadowed beef taste. Nevertheless, the texture of rump with this Japanese shabu style was lovely. As for the last one, it surely must be steak. Tasting beef without steak, there surely must be something wrong. For this case we fortunately had a chance to try Rib-eye Kobe Wine Beef Steak (7/10). Tender?, yes. Juicy?, yes. Full of rich flavour on the palate. The smokiness technique of the chef added another dimension of aroma. Nice one. Ones would not deny about deliciousness of this steak. For me, it would still be US beef as the top choice for steak. This type of beef gives too fattily tender kind of texture and exhibits too much oil. The part that would be just right for steak is perhaps tenderloin in my humble view. By the way, they have many choices of salt and pepper to go with steak. Excellent indeed.

All in all, it is a good experience if Kobe Beef is something you crave for. A good opportunity indeed to compare another type of Kobe Beef that has been fed somewhat differently from the standard one.

Another overrated seafood restaurant in Chon Buri in my humble opinion, this is. There are so many seafood restaurants, most of which are pretty similar, in Chon Buri but hardly any of them keeps up with the standard like in the past. 33 Seafood in Sri Racha is no exception. The atmosphere is certainly great during non-public vacation days. However, during public vacation I believe this place can be totally opposite despite its large area. On a cool evening, al fresco at this restaurant can be lovely. Arriving this place is easy enough. It is only a few kilometers from Nong Mon Market and is near Thanon Sukhumvit.

The menu at this place is as aforementioned not different from other seafood places around. As for pricing wise, it is not very expensive nor valuable. The first one for us was Fried Salted Squid - หมึกอาบแดด (2/10). Ways too salty in my view. It was as well over-fried. Portion was small too. Next was Oyster Omelette - ออส่วนหอยนางรม (7/10). I kind of like this one: crisp and flavourful. The overall picture of this oyster omelette was delicious. If there were more of bean sprout, it would even be better.

Then Hot and Spicy Sea Clam - หอยตลับผัดฉ่า (5/10) arrived. Usually this is a dish that everyone likes. However, it was so-so here. It seemed to be lack of spices. Lastly, Baked White Prawn with Salt - กุ้งแชบ๊วยอบเกลือ (5/10) was the choice. Good but not great. Too expensive in fact. THB500 for half a kilo which came around 6-7 prawns. Anyway, 33 Seafood is not at all a bad place to visit. Just bear in mind that you are not visiting for food but overall picture instead: seaside view on a good day with ok food.

Aroma: Oak essence. Sweet fruits aroma. Violet.

Surely Napa style of straight forward and flashy US cult Cabernet Sauvignon. Big, ripe, and sweet are the definition. So just pop now, why wait? Have something equally big to go along too. Roasted rack of lambs or venison will do, I suppose.

Personally, Cha Panya is a kind of tearoom I like. It is peaceful as well as has quality tea available. Located right next to Mother May I in Soi Sukhumvit 59. Hence, driving is perfectly fine as visiting via public transport. Similar to Mother May I, Cha Panya is a house converted into a cafe. The interior is kept minimum in zen like atmosphere (Am I using the right word???). Thinking about going on a game of Go while sipping quality hot tea for a fine afternoon. Isn't this another great moment? At least it is a "yes" for me.

Strolling into the tearoom, there you can find a tea counter where beverage would be prepared. Cha Panya uses different technique in brewing different kind of tea. Indeed there are various choices of tea to be chosen from: Japanese, Chinese, Indian, white tea, green tea, red tea and etc. If you are unsure, ask for samples to sniff. It is always a great idea to get the sense of what you are going to order.

In my humble opinion, either iced tea or hot tea represent better character of the tea than the hybrid one such as tea latte. But still pleasant though. Iced tea here ranges around THB150 a glass while hot tea can range from THB200 to THB300+ depending on your choice. My favourite one was hot Pu-erh Tea (THB240). Classic strong Chinese tea with unique palate, it is. I could just sit at the tea counter with a book of novel and sip for hours.

We also did try a selection of cakes including Banana Cake (4/10), Carrot Cake (4/10), and Green Tea Cake (3/10). I personally would not recommend any of these. Cakes are not the strong point of Cha Panya. They seem to be there just for a minor role complimenting the tea.

Not so much better were Bael Fruit Cake (4/10), Ginseng Oolong Tea Jelly (4/10), Osmanthus Tea Jelly (4/10), and Green Tea Panna Cotta (3/10). Out of these desserts, I would go for those jelly. At least they seem to pair better with exotic Asian tea.

Appearance: Light yellow straw.

Aroma: Saline, lime curd, crushed rock, and orchard.

Palate: Rich and creamy. Lingering acidity. Dry with density. Citrus and spice notes. Not at all austere.

Such a unique personality and expression from the woman behind Domaine Leroy, Lalou Bize-Leroy, this with Bourgogne is. This is no ordinary flat Aligote. On the other hand, vibrant and fresh with complexity. Initially, it seemed to hold its nerve backward. Only after a few hours of opening, the true characters revealed. Such an enjoyable Aligote.

Finding a restaurant to hang out with family and friends around Thong Lo / Ekkamai area (except the old boring Audrey Cafe), "Mother May I" in Soi Sukhumvit 59 may be another one in your list. What we like about this place is the location and the atmosphere. It is located not to far from BTS stations with Thong Lo Station as the nearest one. In addition, for those who drive, they also provide some parking lots in front of the restaurant, otherwise, parking in the Soi is as well not a bad idea.

This house-converted-restaurant is rather beautiful. The front garden with big trees does its job in cooling down temperature rather nicely. The decoration inside is somewhat contemporary. Whether you are in a big group or just a couple, it definitely can suit you. For me Mother May I might not at all be a choice for dining in my head if I were to select a meal to enjoy. However, it would surely be a choice when I have to hang out with a group of friends.

Here comes to the part that I was not so impressed. Food here are not priced too dearly nor too friendly. The kind of logic can as well be applied to the quality and taste of each dish. They were not that delicious but they were not bad either.

Riceberry Rice in Coconut - ข้าวไรซ์เบอร์รี่มะพร้าว (THB6/10) : THB75 for a small portion of rice. This is insane in my humble opinion. Some may argue its riceberry rice. So what? Ok, it may have a touch of coconut scent giving added value. But not this expensive still for just boiled rice.

Chicken Wings - ปีกไก่คั่วเกลือ (6/10) : Rather nicely fried and came in a small portion.

Stir-fried Minced Pork with Purple Olive and Phak Wan (5/10) : Delicious if you forget the purple olive part as you might think "Where are my purple olive?".

Pork Belly with Shrimp Paste - หมูสามชั้นรวนกะปิระยอง (6/10) : It is like yum sweet pork belly with shrimp paste. Not bad at all with nice boiled rice but not the coconut riceberry rice as shrimp paste and chilli would just eliminate the perfume of coconut.

Thai Omelette with Chai-ya Salted Egg, Century Egg, Shrimp, and Chilli - ไข่ติงลี่ ของเชฟป้อม (4/10) and Thai Omelette with Squid, Black Squid Ink, and Sweet Basil - ไข่ไอ้เท่ง ของเชฟชุมพล (4/10) : Not a bad idea in stuffing in various ingredients in omelette. But come on, you better fry omelette with much better skill. Where is the fluffiness?

For soup / curry range, I don't think they really know how to cook this kind of food.

Lotus Stem and Semi Salted Fish in Coconut Soup - ไหลบัวต้มกะทิกับปลาสลิดทอด (5/10) : Like the crispy salted fish part but the lotus stem coconut soup part needs to be improved. Lack of texture there.

Yellow Curry with Prawn and Jackfruit Served with Roti - โรตีแกงกะหรี่กุ้งขนุน (4/10) : Tasted more like pineapple curry in my view, not really yellow curry. Too sweet and need more spices. Also prawn with yellow curry and roti don't seem to go well with each other in my humble opinion.

White Crab with Tumeric Red Curry Served with Vermicelli - ขนมจีนแกงปูใบชะพลู (5/10) : Not bad for crab curry. Not too spicy also, guess everyone should be able to take it. Might not be exactly the authentic kind of crab curry but nice enough.

Appearance: Opaque and inky purple.

Aroma: Forest floor, mushroom, mild truffle, dark fruits, earth.

Palate: Rich, big, and powerful. Fine and smooth tannins. Wonderfully long in the mouth with black fruits and oak characters.

Stunning is the only word for me with this red Bordeaux. It was Chateau Leoville Barton which brought me into the world of "God Blood" and it is still as fabulous. My kind of Bordeaux really. For this Leoville Barton 2003, it was just spectacular for a hot year. It at first stroke me hard with powerful bouquet of earth and spring which followed by concentrated fruits, and signed of mature Bordeaux. The spectacular lovely nose of truffle was what I admire. Silky on the palate too. Though it was big, elegance was as well another shining character. Entering its drinking period now but long life is ahead. Wish I had cases of this Saint Julien. Raise many more glasses, Bravo!!!

Who knows "Soba" can be fabulously nice. Whilst people keep seeking and searching for high end sushi or sukiyaki, this little soba-specialised restaurant just out of Tokyo city centre offers such unforgettable soba: "Jiyusan". Apart from lovely soba, the atmosphere and services of this place are as equally great. Expect the warm welcome from owners, and quiet and peaceful ambient.

As it is out of city centre, arriving at Jiyusan can be a little tedious. What we did is taking a train from Ikebukuro to Higashi-Nagasaki (~ 5 minutes) and then followed by a short walk of around 10 mins. Trust me, it is not that difficult and worth a trip for dinner.

When flipping through me here, we were not surprised the menu was all in Japanese. However, the owner was kind enough to recommend us to take Dinner Course which was priced at JPY2,000. This came into 3 parts. The first one was Soba on Bamboo for dipping - せいろ (9/10). Classic zaru soba that was well made. If you were Italian, you may say "al dente". Delicious indeed. Love the texture as well as well balanced dipping sauce.

Then we were presented with a small bowl of Soba with Mackerel in Soup - 小さばにしんそば (8/10). This was mind refreshing. The soup was well made with flavour and a touch of tanginess. The saba (mackerel) was also tasty.

Lastly, the dessert was red bean jelly (8/10), I suppose. What a perfect way to end the course in classic Japanese style. Sweetness was well balanced. The flavour of red bean exploded deliciously. Soft on the texture. Love it.

Nothing much to say about this place, except "Must Visit".
