Every single one of these Field Partners is special. Every single one serves Deaf children who live or attend school there, and who have heartbreaking stories and have overcome immense difficulty in their young lives.

Every single Field Partner has struggled at a time past or present to meet the basic needs of the Deaf children living there and they don’t take anything for granted.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

At each Field Partner, Deaf children are not only cared for—they are known, loved, and reminded that Jesus loves them. Within these communities, Deaf children and staff support one another with a depth of commitment that reflects their daily reality. They are more than a “program”—they are a family.

Every Deaf child has a story. Their past matters. Their future matters. Their life matters.

Today, there are 26 Field Partners… and only God knows what the future holds.

Tseganesh (26, female) with a degree in Fashion Design and Esubalew (25, male) with a degree in Market Management.

Most of us can relate to what it means to work hard, whether earning a degree, striving for some sort or a promotion in the work place, or excersing the patience and discipline required to raise a family. However for those who are born in a developing country, in impoverished conditions and without the ability to hear, the meaning of “working hard” is an entirely different concept. It requires extraordinary strength to cross a finish line when you began miles behind all of the other racers. We’d like to share a glimpse into the personal lives of both of these Deaf students so you can fully appreciate the race they have both won.

Tseganesh is currently 26 years old and lives in Ethiopia with her mother, a seamstress, and  her sister, who are both hearing. Around the age of five, she began Kindergarten at a local school for the Deaf. She was attending school, but transportation to and from school was very expensive and a significant hardship on the family. The following school year the family found out about an alternate school for Deaf students that was logistically more feasible and when she started attending there she was quickly sponsored through Deaf Child Hope. This sponsorship provided vital support–covering school transportation, needed school supplies, food, clothing, and other essential needs–making it possible for her to continue her education.

 

 

 

A staff member was able to chat with Tseganesh and ask her about what inspired her to pursue Fashion Design. She shared, “I have loved drawing since childhood.  I think my deafness makes me very visual and a visual learner. I also love fashion and feel like this path “fits well with my deafness.”  When asked about her next steps, Tseganesh explainede that she hopes to design new traditional Ethiopian clothing styles and is currently looking for a job in an organization involved in that type of work.

The primary school that Tseganesh attended had (as still does have) a wonderful program for the parents called the Income Generating Activities or IGA. Tseganesh’s mother was able to get an IGA loan to buy her first sewing machine.  This allowed her to begin mending clothing for others and eventually was able to own her own store making and selling her clothing. The fact that she owns her shop is very rare as most business owners must rent. The IGA program gave Tseganesh’s mother a way to provide for herself and her two daughters and to this day she expresses her gratitude for those opportunities.

Esubalew is currently 25 and lives with his parents, his sister and brother (who are all hearing). He and his brother are very close. Esubalew studied alongside his brother at a hearing school from ages five to seven. When he was seven years old, his family learned sign language. His brother Ashenafi has become very fluent in sign language and he and Esubalew are still close as adults. At the age of seven, Esabalew had the opportunity to change schools and started attending the same school that Tseganesh was at and soon after he was sponsored through Deaf Child Hope which helped to make his education more stable, accessible, and consistent.

 

 

 

 

 

 

With his college degree in Market Management Esubalew wants to go into business selling shoes, clothing and bags. If he gets the opportunity, he would like to further his education, possibly in Videography.

In doing so we can feel the stress lift, perspective is renewed, our blessings are remembered. This is indeed an important practice because then we remember that the birth of our Lord Jesus brought a new hope to all of mankind. Not just the hearing or the sighted. Not just those living in the northern hemisphere or who celebrate with the traditional decorating of a Christmas tree. ALL OF MANKIND.

A very generous donor blessed Deaf children in Uganda this Christmas season with new clothes. These are not children who often receive gifts or have much of their own. In fact many of them don’t have families other than the one they have created at their Deaf school. Thank you for your Love in Action this Christmas, that is what the season is all about.

We are overjoyed and proud to catch you up on the numerous mission trips DCH has taken in the second half of 2025. We extend our gratitude to every single person who chose to spend their time traveling to bring hope to Deaf children living in poverty.

In July, our Field Director, Grace McCoy, traveled to the Philippines to visit both of our partners there, one of which is a new partnership. During her trip, she also visited five additional Deaf schools with the goal to strengthen relationships and learn about their vocational programs. This valuable insight will help us share ideas and opportunities with our partner Deaf schools and orphanages in different places around the world so that success stories can spread and support multiplied.

 

 

 

 

After the Philippines, Grace visited our two DCH partners in Vietnam. The last time Grace was in Vietnam was seven years ago and she was able to go back to some of the same schools and see the same kids on this trip. She reflects that one of the best parts of the trip was to see the remarkable transformation of the Deaf students she had first met seven years ago and to see how far they have come. Many children who once had no access to language are now thriving. They have graduated school, are employed, and confidently pursuing their futures. “It was a meaningful reminder of the long-term impact of language, education, and hope.” Grace shared.

 

 

 

From the 2018 trip

Jamaica in October was the next trip, this one with a large group. Our Missions Trip Coordinator Michelle Sharick shared about this trip.

“Our group of eleven spent a week visiting our two Jamaican partners, and it is always such a joy to love on the students there. This team was amazing—they stepped up beautifully, leading a skit and teaching the students a Bible lesson. We shared how Jesus sees our feelings and loves us no matter what feelings we are experiencing.  We had brought with us some printed out emoji’s to help demonstrate emotion. The team led and activity and invited each Deaf child and staff member to write their name on a small piece of paper and place it on the emoji that reflected how they were feeling that day. Our team then stood at each printed emoji and offered a “response”—high fives, words of encouragement in sign language, hugs, or whatever they felt the person needed. One teammate at the ‘lonely’ emoji offered hugs, and we watched in awe as older boys stepped forward, placing their papers there just to receive a hug. Some of us had tears in our eyes as teachers asked for more paper so they, too, could go forward for a hug. And just when we thought everyone was done, students began asking for their papers back simply so they could place them on the lonely emoji to receive a hug. God is so good, loving each of us right where we are, and this moment reminded us how powerful it is when someone shows they care—because sometimes a single hug can make someone feel a little less lonely.”

 

 

 

 

Also in October a team of thirteen traveled to Kenya. It was amazing to see how God used each person’s unique gifts to serve together. For many, it was their first mission trip, and the experience was powerful. The team visited Lance’s Deaf Orphans and our other two partners in Kenya. Some team members were able to meet their sponsored Deaf child for the first time, while others felt led to begin sponsoring a child after forming a personal connection. The trip had a deep impact on every participant and reaffirmed the importance of reaching Deaf children with love, support, and hope.

One trip participant shared this reflection about the experience upon returning home.

“God has taught me so much humility, and so much compassion for the children and for the people.  And to really rip up and throw out my comfort box and go out there among those less fortunate. I have found myself being more Christ-like when it comes to being among those souls who are hurting and that has been a profound experience for me and has brought me feeling much closer to God.”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

And lastly, at least for the year 2025, a trip to Uganda on the heels of the Kenya trip, with many of the same participants.

One of those participants was able to meet her sponsored Deaf child for the first time on this trip. She shared her thoughts afterwards about that experience.

“When I first saw her, I knew it was Prossy and I think it was the same for her. We connected immediately. I can’t explain that bond with this precious little girl other than I know it is a relationship blessed by God. I went to embrace her and she embraced me back and we hugged for a long time, it was incredibly emotional.  A few days later on Sunday, after the church service, we were trying to say goodbye. She held me tight for a long time and we were both crying. See noticed my Bible and I asked her if she wanted it. She immediately said “yes” and I handed it to her. She then dropped to her knees and thanked me. It was the most humbling moment of my life. I miss her so much and I think about her all the time. I’ve been praying for her ”

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The post DCH Mission Trips: A Busy & Blessed 2025 first appeared on Deaf Child Hope.

Our field director, Grace McCoy, responded to the school’s request for aid with a personal visit last spring to assess if this location was the right fit for a DCH partnership. Here are her initial impressions upon driving up to the school and some of their experiences while visiting.

“I didn’t know what to expect before arriving. We have other partners in Uganda so I guess I was expecting something like what I’d seen at those schools. However once our car crested the top of a hill and we could see the school beyond, I was at a loss for words because what they called a school was a row of small shacks.  A building, if you can call it that, of wood, sticks, fabric and some metal across the top for a roof. The Deaf children were so excited to have visitors and came running straight to us as we got out of the car.  Many of them wanted to give us hugs even though we were essentially strangers to them.  They led us into one of their small classrooms and had a short program where they introduced themselves and asked some questions to get to know us. It was so personal and wonderful. They have so little, but poured their hearts and souls into welcoming us.

 

 

 

 

 

 

After their welcome program the children gave us a little tour. I just remember feeling heartbroken because they literally had nothing and yet all of the children were just full of joy. Afterwards we got to spend some time getting to know the children and playing with them. Part of this was seeing what they have been learning in school most recently. That afternoon some of the children came up to me saying that they were hungry and that they didn’t have enough food. Later on we learned more from the school’s director that indeed they were really struggling to feed all of the children due to lack of funding.

Later on that evening at the meal time, the children lined up and started praying one at a time, expressing their thanks to God and for the provision for their small portion of food. I was deeply touched and knew that the director and teachers are teaching the children the importance of prayer. It was all incredibly humbling.“

Back in Colorado, what began as a four-day Vacation Bible School this past August—filled with singing, skits and crafts—went so much deeper then anybody anticipated. The 35 children attending the Vacation Bible School spent time each day learning about what it’s like to be Deaf, to live in poverty, and to face the hardships that Deaf children in poverty endure.

Grace herself led the sessions,  teaching them so they were learning from someone who knew firsthand. After the fun-filled week of VBS was completed, there was a program for the parents and a special offering was collected. The children had all agreed that the offering was going to this Deaf Child Hope’s newest partner in Uganda. In less than an hour they raised $500!

 

 

 

 

 

The funds were sent to Uganda right away and quickly put to good use. In addition to  providing food, the money helped the school purchase fabric and supplies to make clothes for the children, school books, toiletries and much-needed toilet paper. It also provied sand, bricks, and cement to build an enclosed latrine on the property — a huge step forward for the students and staff!

It goes to show we can all make a difference! Whether we are one person or many, young or with many years experience. No matter where we are born, what our backgrounds are or what language we use, the love of Jesus is free and for everyone!

Another exciting event at LDO this summer was the visit of a group of PhD students from Arizona State University. They made a special trip to Lances Deaf Orphans to test equipment for a project they are currently working on at the University’s Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program. This initiative aims to expand access to locally relevant, culturally responsive educational materials in areas with limited or no internet connectivity.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

We interviewed Courtney Langerud, a PhD researcher and instructor at Arizona State University whose work focuses on education, justice, and community engagement. Courtney first became involved with Deaf Child Hope as an intern in 2017 when she was a freshman in college and shortly after that she visited a few of the DCH partner locations in Africa on mission trips. Courtney shared with us that her experiences with Deaf Child Hope in 2017 deeply shaped her academic path and inspired her to to focus her masters degree on educational access for Deaf youth in East Africa. So in 2025 when she had the chance to bridge the two worlds with the EPICS program she jumped on it. The goal of this EPICS project is to make educational materials in remote impoverished areas, accessible offline, since internet connectivity in those regions are unreliable and often unaffordable. The project is important because it helps students and educators gain access to the tools they need for a high-quality education regardless of infrastructure barriers.

Courtney had visited Lances Deaf Orphans back in 2017 and knew right away that LDO would be a good place to trial their project. EPICS supports student led projects in over 20 countries. They worked the prototype at ASU and then were ready to trial it in the field and LDO seemed like a good fit.

The device that was created functions like a stand alone server. It’s loaded with educational videos, books and other learning tools. Any device with WIFI capabilities (laptops, smart phones, etc) can connect to it locally and access all of the content without actually needing to be online.

The students at LDO got to use the prototype technology and loved it! “The reaction of the students brought tears to my eyes”, Courtney told us. “The students (who are all Deaf) were captivated by the Kenyan Sign Language (KSL) videos, and were signing along with the content. Seeing their engagement reminded me of why this work matters so much and the beauty that there is in a long-term relationship with community partners”.

Courtney and her team are deeply grateful for the staff at LDO, for welcoming their team and look forward to growing their partnership in meaningful and collaborative ways.

Have you ever thought about what daily experiences you have that are actually a privilege but they happen so routinely that you’ve become accustomed to living in privilege without even realizing it?  Most of us rarely, if ever, stop to think about it, but it’s both humbling and important to reflect on those blessings and ensure we never take them for granted.

Recently on a trip to Kenya the team got to meet and spend the day with a remarkable eight year old boy named Gerald. Gerald attends a special school in a very rural part of Kenya. The majority of the students at his school are Deaf and the teachers and students use Kenyan Sign Language, or KSL, as the primary language. Gerald however has passed his hearing screenings, yet is unable to speak. The doctors are unsure why he cannot speak yet or if he will ever be able to speak, but his mother was able to express in person to the team that she is so thankful that he has access to language and community connection at his school. In this space, his differences don’t isolate him and don’t make him an outlier, instead he is equally valued and appreciated for the uniqueness he brings to the group. 

Gerald and most of the deaf students live at the school during the week because their homes are too far away to travel to school on a daily basis. Gerald’s home is two hours away from the school by motorbike on very bumpy, often washed out, roads. When the Deaf Child Hope (DCH) team visited Gerald’s school in the middle of the week, the students and staff were standing eagerly on the cement porch of the school with big smiles and waves. Some of them ran to the van as it parked and embraced the new visitors as they emerged from the hot van.

The group was quite surprised to find that Gerald’s mother was at the school patiently waiting her turn to shake hands and hug the visitors. She had taken the day off to travel four hours round-trip by motorbike because she had something very important to share with the visitors. 

After the crowd thinned, she was able to quietly express her message:

“Thank you for helping to save my son’s life!”

Late last year, Gerald was hospitalized with severe abdominal pain and significant blood loss. Doctors were unable to find the root cause of his issues but they were able to address the immediate symptoms and get him out of critical condition.  The medications, hospital stay, blood work and imaging they did would not have been financially attainable for the family without funds provided by Deaf Child Hope’s Marisol Memorial Medical Care Fund (MMMCF).

 

 

 

 

 

The MMMCF provides emergency or critical care funding to Deaf children at our partner locations world wide. Gerald is just one of many Deaf children whose lives have been impacted by this fund, and he won’t be the last. The MMMCF is entirely donor-funded, and we are incredibly thankful for the generosity that sustains it.

Gerald’s health journey continues as his mom works with doctors to find a diagnosis. They have to travel a long way for every doctor’s appointment and resources are very limited. 

Gerald’s story is a powerful reminder:
Accessible healthcare is a privilege.
Reliable transportation to appointments is a privilege.
Being able to fill your gas tank without choosing between that and putting food on the table is a privilege.

If you don’t have to think about those things or worry about them then chances are you live in some state of privilege and God has blessed you. 

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”     – Philippians 4:19

Heather and Wilson now live in Georgia with the rest of their family, but Heather grew up in Alabama, where she was crowned Miss Alabama, and went on to become Miss America in 1995. Heather remains the only Deaf woman ever to hold that title! Heather’s life story is one of determination, challenges, courage, hard choices, resilience, talent, and compassion among many other qualities. Above all, her love for Jesus spills out in her inspirational speech–a message 100 Deaf children living in poverty in Kenya had the chance to receive on this trip.

One of those Deaf children is a young man named Bismarck.

Bismarck is 15 years old and lives and goes to school at Lances Deaf Orphans, or LDO. All of the children at LDO are deaf and consider LDO their home because they do not have homes or families to live with. If Bismarck’s name sounds familiar, you may recall him from our blog and social media posts because he was featured a few times last year when he became severely sick. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters from all over who contributed to the Marisol Memorial Medical Care Fund (MMMCF), Bismarck received lifesaving treatment. Through funds in the MMMCF we were able to help Bismarck get the medical attention and medication he needed after he was diagnosed with Sickle Cell Anemia.

Today Bismarck is much better, and is definitely a student leader at LDO. He has a bright and wonderful smile and a great sense of humor. Bismarck was especially excited earlier this month when the DCH team arrived—because he knew that among the visitors were members of the family who had been sponsoring him for over six years. That family includes Heather and her son Wilson who were both on the trip. Bismarck and Heather (along with her whole family) have been corresponding with each other since his sponsorship began when he was only 8 years old.

It took the team three full days of travel to arrive at LDO. Not every sponsor gets the opportunity to meet the Deaf child they’ve been sponsoring for years, so this reunion was memorable. The experience is almost indescribable and we will let some of the photos from the trip do the rest of the talking. But first, we’ll leave you with a quote from Heather herself about the essence of our ministry and the mission of Deaf Child Hope.

“Deaf children in poor areas (in Kenya) often have no language and don’t even know their own names. Their relatives believe their deafness is a curse. Deaf Child Hope’s ministry reaches out to these deaf children (some of them orphans) and helps them receive shelter, food, an education and learn about Jesus’ love!”

In ‘The Least of These’ in Uganda 2025 Part 1 we highlighted the story of a specific child, Grace. Today, in Part 2, we share an experience from the perspective of a Deaf child to help our readers gain a deeper understanding of the intense hardship and desperate loneliness that most Deaf children living in poverty face.

Imagine yourself as a Deaf child…

You do not know how old you are or even your own name. You cannot hear anything—not the sound of people talking, a car or bus driving by, or birds chirping. Your family does not pay attention to you, and you cannot use your mouth to make sounds and connect with them the way they all do with each other. You are often hungry and always lonely. You do not know what to do with your time and it feels like others are angry at you, even when you are just trying to help them. You wonder why you exist.

One day, a strange man arrives and speaks to members of your family. You have no idea what is happening. The man comes over to where you are sitting on the floor of your small home and and he begins moving his hands in a way you’ve never seen. This is very confusing and you don’t know what he wants.  The man continues to talk to your family, then he smiles and waves to you before leaving.

A few days later, your family suddenly packs some of your personal belongings into a suitcase and motions for you to follow them. You get on a motorbike and ride for miles holding your suitcase in your lap. Eventually you pull up to a gate that you’ve never been to before, and you see that same man who came to your house the other day. Your parents drop you off with the suitcase, give you a brief hug and leave. You feel scared and uncertain. You don’t know anybody here, and no one knows you. 

Soon, you realize you are surrounded by other kids and some of them seem uncertain or nervous too—maybe they are new as well. Others are playing and smiling with each other and doing the strange movements with their hands that the man had done, but you still don’t understand what it means or why they do it. On your first day at this new place you receive three meals, one in the morning, one in the afternoon and another before the sun sets. Three meals makes your stomach full—something that never happens at home. The other children try and play with you and one even gently takes your hand but you are unsure what they want, so you decide to sit on the side of the play area instead. Later, you are given a large soft pad and realize it is for sleeping on. You’ve never had something so comfortable to sleep on before and you quickly fall asleep.  As you drift off, the sense of uncertainty also drifts away. You can tell that this is a safe place, and tomorrow will be a good day. 

The next day, you walk into a classroom, and the teachers are giving you their attention. They point to pictures on the wall and use their hands in the same way the strange man did when he was at your house. You soon realize that these hand motions are a way to connect with others and certain hand movements have specific meanings. Once you understand this, you can’t wait to learn as many signs as possible. You realize that you are finally able to go to school for the very first time in your life—which has been a dream of yours. You realize that when you use your hands to  communicate, you can make connections with others, and you later learn that this is called friendship. You learn the hand motions are called Sign Language and you can’t wait to learn as much Sign Language as you can. 

A week goes by… you continue to get three meals a day, every day, and this place is starting to feel more like a home than the house you were raised in ever did. You finally have friends, and you can now have basic conversations with both adults and other kids at the school. No one acts mad or annoyed when you need help or ask questions. You learn about a man named Jesus, and you discover Jesus knows you and loves you just the way you are. You finally know why you exist in this world and can’t wait for tomorrow to come. 

This is the reality that many of the Deaf children face when they attend a Deaf school for the very first time. Our Field Director, Grace McCoy, had the opportunity to visit a new DCH partner while in Uganda. Over 50% of the Deaf students at this school showed up on their first day with no language and had never experienced a learning environment. In a short period of time, these children, who came from barren backgrounds, grow emotionally, physically, academically, and spiritually! God has mighty plans for each one of them! All of your prayers and support are helping to invest in the lives of Deaf children in poverty around the world. Thank you for your faithfulness. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The post Visiting ‘The Least of These’ in Uganda 2025 Part 2: The Perspective of a Deaf Child first appeared on Deaf Child Hope.

As a charity dedicated to supporting Deaf children in poverty, we often refer to the children we serve around the world as the “least of these,” a term Jesus used to describe those in need. As Christians, we are called to help those who need help, and love those who need love, even if they are far away geographically, linguistically or emotionally. 

Recently, two members of our Deaf Child Hope team traveled to Uganda, where they witnessed firsthand the struggles and victories of Deaf children enduring extreme hardship. Sometimes writing a nonprofit blog about Deaf children in poverty can be challenging. While we don’t want to overwhelm readers, we also believe in sharing the harsh reality about the difficulties that they endure because that is a powerful way to bring awareness and make change. 

This month, we are sharing the story of a little boy named Grace, in a two-part series highlighting Deaf children like him living in poverty in Uganda.

A Beaten Child

Yes, you read that correctly—two Graces. Our Field Director, Grace McCoy, met and bonded with a little boy in Uganda whose name is also Grace. Both Graces are Deaf. For the sake of clarity, we will refer to the little boy in Uganda as “Grace” and our Field Director as “Grace McCoy.”

Grace was born in Uganda and early on his parents realized he was Deaf. Tragically, they attempted to kill him because of it. In Uganda and many developing countries, there are harmful cultural beliefs around people with differences or disabilities, and it’s viewed as a curse. This leads to children being restrained, abandoned, beaten, or even killed in an attempt to avoid bringing the curse upon the family. 

Young Grace (who didn’t yet have a name at the time) miraculously survived the beating that was intended to end his life and ended up abandoned and living on the streets. He was protected during his time on the street by another abandoned child, this one hearing, and together they begged for food in order to survive. By the grace of God, an adult came along who ultimately took Grace in as his own child, and provided him the medical treatment that he desperately needed. It was at this time that he was given his name “Grace” by his new adopted father. 

A Second Chance Through Deaf Education in Uganda

When Grace’s adopted father learned of a new school for Deaf children he was thrilled. Grace had no language skills—he didn’t even know his own name or how old he was. He had no way to express his feelings or ask for help. To say that attending a school where he could learn language and make connections with others was life-changing, would be an understatement. 

When Grace McCoy met him in February, Grace had only been attending the school for a short time but had already made tremendous progress. “He is very bright and truly cares about other people. God is not done with him and has a plan for his life!” Grace McCoy shared upon returning back to the States and telling our Deaf Child Hope team about the amazing little boy who made a permanent impact on her heart.
