If you’re looking for a huge TV to fill your room, this Samsung UN55C6300 55-Inch 1080p 120 Hz LED HDTV (Black) is a great value.  Now’s a good time to get that LED TV because prices have come down a lot due to 3D HDTVs.  And right now, you probably don’t want to invest in a 3D TV.  It’s a nice novelty but you won’t be converting your library to 3D anytime soon.

In my opinion, 3D just doesn’t work well at home on a screen less than 100 inches in diameter.  Since you lose the 3D effect near the left and right edges of the screen (I’d say a good 10 percent of the screen on each side), you need a REALLY big screen to push that part of the screen outside your field of view far enough so that it doesn’t bother you.  In the theater, it’s great because the screen are usually very large, at home, not so much.  Another reason 3D is annoying (especially at home) are the glasses.  The glasses are about $100 – $200, and use batteries.  The glasses also forces the frame rate to be 1/2 of what it can be, so motion on the screen won’t be as smooth as they can be.  Glasses (especially the polarized kind) also sap the color out of the picture, I’m sure you’ve noticed that from the theaters.

Therefore, I think it’s a great time to get an HDTV that doesn’t have 3D technology.  Check out the Samsung.  It’s sleek, and has all the features you would need in an HDTV besides 3D.  It only has 120Hz (times it can refresh the screen per second), whereas some TVs have 240Hz.  The 240Hz right now is kinda gimmicky.  In reality, all media, whether it’s bluray, DVD, cable or satellite goes to the TV (at most) at 60Hz.  But 120Hz is nice to have b/c the TV can interpolate (create) frames to make the picture look smoother.  TVs do a great job up to about 120Hz… 240Hz is really pushing it and it won’t really be noticeable.  In fact, you might notice some glitchy artifacts at 240Hz when the action is intense due to the TV trying (and failing) really hard to create 3 additional frames per “real” frame.

I’m going to start my review of the Nespresso system by comparing two competing systems that are more widely available at places such as Bed Bath & Beyond, Target and Walmart.
I have been waffling between getting a Keurig K-cup (http://www.keurig.com) or Tassimo T-disc (http://www.tassimodirect.com) system for a few months now.

This is the one I have been eyeballing:

I’ve tried a variety of beverages from this particular Bosch T-disc machine as my father-in-law has one. I’ve had the Starbucks’ coffee and cappuccino, the Seattle’s Best breakfast blend, the Gevalia espresso, and the Suchard hot chocolate.  Everything tasted pretty good.  I was most impressed by the machine’s ability to replicate the Starbucks taste to the “T” (pun intended).  One of the advantages of the Tassimo T-disc over the Keurig K-cup is its barcode system.  Each T-disc has a barcode which tells the machine how to brew it.  Apparently, the barcode specifies everything from water temperature, water volume to pressure.  Tassimo touts that it is because of this feature the T-disc can do espresso and the K-cup can’t.
However, the espressos from the Bosch machine seemed to lack something, I couldn’t put my finger on it till I did some research and found that the T-disc’s maximum pressure was only 3.3 bars! According to this article, real espresso requires a minimum of 9 bars; and most high-end espresso machines do 15 bars.  That was it!  Although I applaud Tassimo’s barcoding system for being able to brew different types of beverages (yay hot chocolate!) it really shouldn’t say it can make espresso.  Similarly, the cappuccino that the Tassimo system makes (which should be espresso with steamed milk and milk foam) isn’t real cappuccino because 1) it isn’t real espresso and 2) it doesn’t really steam anything.  However, it achieves a pseudo-cappuccino by forcing hot water through a special “milk” T-disc that is part of the cappuccino serving.

Nespresso has designed a system that differs from the Keurig and Tassimo in a few ways:

1. Nespresso makes REAL espresso: its machines are capable of 19 bars of pressure!
2. Nespresso does not make (American) coffee or tea or hot chocolate.  However, coffee can be had in the form of an Americano (espresso w/ water) or Latte (espresso w/ milk) or Cappuccino (espresso w/milk foam).
3. Nespresso does not allow other coffee makers to make Nespresso Capsule.
4. Nespresso Capsules are only available from Nespresso.com or a Nespresso Store (in major cities).

I was turned off at first by the fact that Nespresso didn’t allow other coffee roasters to make capsules for their machines (who doesn’t want variety?) nor did they allow anyone else but themselves to sell them (Capsules only).  It sounded like an elitist company that would charge an arm and a leg for the capsules.  However, everything changed after tasting the “Volluto” blend at a Williams-Sonoma.  I didn’t care anymore that Nespresso didn’t allow anyone else to make their capsules, I didn’t care that they were the only ones that sold it.  I just wanted it.  So I went home and researched the company some more and found good reasons why they don’t allow anyone else to make their coffees.  You can read all about it on their website, nespresso.com.  I was mostly concerned about the per capsule cost.  However, I was relieved to find that their capsules are only 55 cents each; which is a little cheaper than the K-cups and T-discs that go for $8.99 for 16 at Bed Bath & Beyond.

There are a few cheaper Nespresso machines than the Lattissima, but they don’t come with the detachable milk unit (for frothing).  Being detachable allows the whole container to be conveniently stored in the fridge.

I can’t seem to walk in heels. I’m not sure why. Call it a curse or extreme incoordination (it’s probably the latter).
