Wrought iron remains one of the most distinctive choices for residential fencing – valued not just for its strength, but for the craftsmanship and permanence it brings to a property. Unlike lightweight or prefabricated alternatives, wrought iron carries a sense of structure and defined authority as an architectural material. Each line, curve and join contributes to a finished piece that feels considered rather than mass-produced.

Whether you’re exploring wrought iron fence ideas for your front boundary or looking for practical backyard fence ideas, the right design can enhance your home’s architecture while improving security and long-term value. In this guide, we break down the most effective wrought iron fencing designs for Australian homes to help you choose a style that suits both your property and your lifestyle.

Front Wrought Iron Fence Ideas (Street Appeal)

As the entry point to your home, your front fence has the opportunity to make a statement while improving your kerb appeal. Choose an outdoor fence design that works both visually and structurally.

Modern minimalist iron fences

Minimalist fencing focuses on clean geometry and spacing.

Vertical or horizontal bars with even spacing.

Matte black or neutral finishes.

Little to no ornamentation.

This approach works particularly well for contemporary builds and is one of the most popular modern fence ideas in Australian homes.

Decorative and ornate wrought iron fencing

More traditional homes often suit decorative ironwork, with details that reflect both craftsmanship and heritage.

Scrollwork, floral motifs, and custom patterns.

Finials, such as spear-shaped or fleur-de-lis styles, for added detail.

Balanced designs that avoid feeling too elaborate.

The key is to use decorative iron fencing with restraint: enough detail to add character and depth without overwhelming the facade or competing with the home itself.

Low-profile front fences

Not every front fence needs to make a statement. Lower-set wrought iron fences keep the frontage open while still defining the boundary.

The home already has a strong street presence.

The landscaping already has strong kerb appeal.

A more open, connected frontage is preferred.

You don’t want the property competing with the rest of the streetscape.

Fence and gate combinations

A well-integrated gate can upgrade even simple fencing.

Matching materials and patterns introduce a cohesive look.

Decorative handles, motifs, or custom panels add interest.

Sliding or swing wrought iron gates can be tailored to the property layout.

Wrought iron’s flexibility makes it one of the most adaptable metal fence ideas for fully customised entryways.

Backyard Fence Ideas Using Wrought Iron (Privacy & Security)

Backyard fencing shifts the focus from presentation to performance, while still maintaining the property’s design element.

Decorative backyard fencing

Carry the same design style from the front through to the backyard. Subtle geometric or patterned elements can complement the front fencing, while the overall look stays more relaxed so the space doesn’t feel overdesigned – particularly around entertaining areas.

Security-focused wrought iron fencing

Wrought iron is naturally suited to security applications.

Strong, impact-resistant material.

Vertical bar spacing helps prevent climbing.

Height and pointed finial choices can increase protection.

Compared to other metal fence ideas, wrought iron offers a more substantial and durable solution.

Pool-safe wrought iron fencing

Wrought iron is commonly used around pools for both safety and practical visibility.

Maintains clear sightlines, reducing the risk of knocking clear glass surfaces.

Designed to comply with legislated pool fencing requirements.

Highly durable in outdoor conditions with proper coating.

Combining wrought iron with other materials

Modern fencing ideas often use a mix of materials for a more architectural look.

Brick or stone columns create structure.

Timber infill panels offer warmth and privacy.

Concrete bases provide a contemporary finish.

Combining materials with traditional wrought iron fencing designs can create customised silhouettes and more modern applications.

Modern Wrought Iron Fence Styles Trending in 2026

Wrought iron continues to evolve alongside modern architecture, using restraint and material complexity as key elements.

Matte black finishes

A consistent favourite for contemporary homes.

Clean, understated appearance.

Works across multiple architectural styles.

Highlights structure without distraction.

Mixed Materials

Rather than using wrought iron on its own, many newer designs combine it with materials such as timber, stone, or concrete to introduce contrast. The shift is less about adding elements and more about how those materials are balanced – with wrought iron providing structure and secondary materials introducing warmth and texture.

Horizontal and geometric designs

More homes in South East Queensland are moving beyond traditional vertical bars. Horizontal bars create a more modern, linear look. They are extremely eye-catching on wider frontages where repetition and spacing become more noticeable, while simple geometric patterns add structure without overcomplicating the design.

Subtle decorative detailing

Instead of highly ornate designs, many homeowners now prefer restraint. Rather than heavy ornamentation, many decorative iron fencing designs now favour lighter, more deliberate accents that highlight craftsmanship without dominating the structure.

Simplified scrolls or motifs.

Minimal use of finials.

More focus on proportion and spacing than heavy detailing.

When Wrought Iron Works Best (Front vs Backyard)

Choosing the right application ensures your wrought iron fence ideas feel intentional rather than decorative for its own sake.

Front fencing:

Ideal for street appeal and property value.

Creates a strong first impression.

Balances visibility with boundary definition.

Backyard fencing:

Better suited to security and containment.

Maintains airflow and openness.

Ideal for pools, gardens, and larger spaces.

Is Wrought Iron Right for Your Property?

Wrought iron is best suited to homeowners looking for:

Custom-designed fencing rather than standard panels.

Long-term durability and strength when finished properly with the right protective coatings.

A balance between security and luxurious visual appeal.

It may not be the right fit if:

You want a completely maintenance-free option.

Budget is the primary driver.

A lightweight or temporary solution is required.

Yes! Wrought iron can be suitable for coastal homes, but only when properly treated and maintained.

Wrought iron is a defining feature of Victorian-era homes in Australia, having become a signature of luxury through terrace houses, opulent villas and grand residences known for their intricate lacework detailing. If you’re keen to add wrought iron to your coastal home in South East Queensland, the real question isn’t whether it’s a “good” or “bad” choice; it’s whether the material is properly treated for coastal conditions.

For Brisbane’s Bayside and riverside suburbs, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, salt air and humidity put constant pressure on metal fencing. This type of exposure can accelerate corrosion in any metal. But with the right preparation and ongoing care, wrought iron is one of the most durable and visually striking fencing options for coastal homes in Australia.

Coastal Environments Are Tough on Metal Fencing

Living near the ocean comes with obvious lifestyle benefits that many Queenslanders are drawn to. However, it’s less favourable for building materials.

Salt carried in the air settles on surfaces, including fences and gates. Over time, this salt attracts moisture, creating the perfect environment for corrosion to develop.

So, if you’re wondering, “Does wrought iron rust near the ocean?”, then yes, it can. Yet how quickly it rusts depends on how it’s finished and maintained.

Not All Wrought Iron Fencing Is the Same

Not all metal fencing performs the same in coastal conditions. The difference comes down to how the material is protected from oxidation.

Rust is a corrosive chemical reaction between iron, oxygen and moisture. In coastal habitats, salt accelerates this process, allowing oxidation to occur more quickly and spread beneath the surface.

This is why there’s a clear performance gap between:

Untreated or poorly coated iron.

Standard steel products.

Properly finished wrought iron with protective coatings applied.

Wrought iron itself is strong, dense and less brittle than many alternatives. But without a protective barrier, it will still oxidise over time. When properly galvanised and powder-coated, however, that reaction is significantly slowed, making wrought iron a good option near salt water.

The Best Ways to Protect Wrought Iron in Coastal Areas

If you’re considering wrought iron fencing in coastal areas, you need the right protection and a basic understanding of how to prevent rust on wrought iron to ensure long-term performance.

Here’s how different treatments compare:

1. Galvanising (Best for corrosion resistance)

Galvanising coats the iron in a layer of zinc, creating a barrier against moisture and salt. It’s commonly used as a base layer in coastal environments where corrosion is a concern.

Provides long-term protection against rust.

Reduces the risk of corrosion forming beneath the surface.

Well-suited to coastal conditions.

2. Powder Coating (Adds durability and finish)

Powder coating is applied to the metal – often over galvanised iron – to seal the surface and protect it from the elements. It also gives the fence a more finished, consistent look.

Helps protect against moisture and UV exposure.

Available in a wide range of colours and finishes.

Improves both durability and overall appearance.

3. Paint Coatings (Basic protection)

Standard paint can offer some protection, but on its own, it’s not usually sufficient for coastal conditions.

More prone to chipping and wear.

Requires more frequent maintenance.

Best used as part of a broader system (not the only layer).

Best practice for coastal homes

A combination of galvanised vs powder-coated fencing systems (ideally both together) provides the most reliable long-term protection for your property.

Wrought Iron vs Aluminium for Coastal Homes

When comparing coastal fencing materials in Australia, aluminium is often touted as the “low-maintenance” option.

Here’s how they differ in a wrought iron vs aluminium coastal comparison:

Wrought Iron

High structural strength and impact resistance, well-suited to exposed coastal and high-wind areas.

Solid, weight-bearing construction that holds its form over time.

Can be custom-designed and handcrafted to suit architectural style and site conditions.

Greater design flexibility, from simple profiles to detailed, decorative work.

Strong street presence and an increase in long-term property value.

Susceptible to oxidation (rust) without protective coatings.

Requires galvanising, powder coating and ongoing maintenance, especially in coastal settings.

Aluminium

Less structural strength compared to wrought iron, especially in high-wind or exposed coastal areas.

Can feel lighter or less substantial, especially on larger spans or front-facing boundaries.

Typically, more limited in design flexibility compared to custom wrought iron work.

Naturally resistant to rust.

Forms a protective oxide layer that slows corrosion.

Lightweight and lower maintenance.

Cost Considerations

Aluminium is generally more affordable upfront, making it a practical option for larger areas or lower-maintenance requirements. Wrought iron typically involves a higher initial investment due to its weight, craftsmanship and finishing processes. When properly protected and maintained, however, it offers long-term durability, structural strength and a more substantial architectural presence.

The same applies to features like fencing, wrought iron gates, and entryways, where strength, finish quality, and design detail all contribute to longevity. So when considering wrought iron fencing in coastal areas, the decision comes down to what you prioritise: maintenance, long-term durability, or visual impact.

What We Recommend for Coastal Homes

For homeowners considering what type of fencing for coastal homes in South East Queensland, wrought iron makes an excellent choice when designed and finished for the environment.

What works best

Galvanised base layer for corrosion resistance.

High-quality powder coating for added protection.

Proper installation to avoid water traps or exposed joints.

What to avoid

Untreated or lightly coated iron.

Low-cost imports with inconsistent finishes.

Skipping protective layers to reduce upfront cost.

Cutting corners at the start often leads to significantly higher maintenance or replacement costs later.

Maintenance Expectations: The Honest Answer

Even with the best protective systems, no metal fencing near saltwater is completely maintenance-free. To prevent rust from forming on wrought iron:

Rinse with fresh water occasionally to remove salt build-up.

Inspect for chips or scratches in the coating.

Touch up damaged areas early to prevent corrosion.

Schedule recoating over time, depending on exposure.

The benefit is that with proper cleaning and upkeep, wrought iron fencing can last for decades and continue to add value to your property.

Wrought iron has the capacity to infuse extraordinary texture and detail into metal fences, gates, balustrades and furniture. From intricately carved flourishes and decorative emblems to stylish custom designs, each piece brings exceptional character and value to residential and commercial properties. Wrought iron has a core strength and classic appeal that’s been decorating interiors and exteriors for centuries, yet even the most durable material can show signs of wear over time.

Exposure to the elements, minor scratches, and years of use or neglect can lead to faded finishes or weakened joints. Wrought iron restoration helps preserve this character and ensures pieces maintain their appeal for generations. In this guide, we’ll cover how to restore wrought iron, including step-by-step methods for doors, windows, and railings, along with tips for ongoing care and when to call in the experts at Prestige Wrought Iron.

Why Wrought Iron is Worth Restoring

Unlike less expensive materials, wrought iron is designed to last. Its resilience has led to some pieces surviving for centuries, while many designs endure decades of use. A popular material for family heirlooms and statement features in heritage homes, our own custom wrought iron designs combine the elegance of this ancient metal with the durability of rust-proof coating for long-lasting protection. Many people become very attached to the look, so restoring wrought iron instead of replacing it offers several benefits:

Longevity: Australia is tough on architectural materials and wrought iron can’t escape the intense UV, humidity and general wear and tear. Tailored maintenance will give your wrought iron fence, balustrades, and gates a greater chance of lasting for generations.

Value: Beautifully restored wrought iron will enhance your home’s street appeal and add significant value.

Sustainability: Choosing restoration over replacement helps reduce waste and preserves the iron’s distinctive craftsmanship in homes, businesses and public buildings.

Beauty: Few materials match wrought iron’s ornate designs and striking style, so restoring a unique piece is worth the investment.

Common Issues with Wrought Iron

If you’ve moved into a home with existing wrought iron security grilles, doors or other elements that are starting to show signs of wear, we’ve outlined how to identify common problems when wrought iron fence restoration might be needed:

Rust: Small chips in the paint or scratches in protective coatings can permit moisture to contact the metal, which can lead to corrosion. Knowing how to restore rusted wrought iron helps prevent further damage while extending longevity.

Peeling paint or faded finishes: Over a significant amount of time, sunlight and general weather can dull or flake the paint, leaving exposed patches.

Structural wear: Hinges, joints, or welds may loosen, especially in large gates or fences.

Decorative damage: Intricate scrolls and patterns can bend, crack or break off completely if not properly maintained.

Step-by-Step: How to Restore Rusted Wrought Iron

Prestige Wrought Iron products come with protective coatings, but if you’re wondering how to restore rusted wrought iron in your home, you’ll need the right steps, tools, and plenty of patience.

1. Inspect the Piece

Begin by carefully checking your wrought iron fence, furniture, gates, or railings. Look for rust spots, cracks, loose fittings, or areas where the finish has worn away. This inspection helps you decide whether you can handle the project yourself or need professional wrought iron restoration from the experts at Prestige Wrought Iron.

2. Clean Thoroughly

Remove dirt, dust, and grime using a mild liquid soap, water water and a soft cloth. Avoid harsh detergents containing bleach, which can damage the finish. Ensure the piece is fully dry to prevent rust from oxidising the metal. For outdoor wrought iron furniture or fences, cleaning at least twice a year helps prevent further wear and rust.

3. Remove Rust

When restoring rusted wrought iron, use medium-grit sandpaper to carefully loosen any rust. Then take a wire brush, or steel wool, and use gentle motions until you reveal the clean metal underneath. Rust-dissolving solutions can help with stubborn corrosion, but be mindful of the harsh chemicals. To prevent rust forming in the future, make sure you thoroughly wipe and dry the metal surface.

4. Repair and Reinforce

If you notice any structural issues, which include decent-sized cracks, bent sections, and weakened joints, the fittings may need welding or tightening by an expert. While minor fixes can be carried out at home, larger structural work is best handled by professionals who are skilled in restoring wrought iron railings and other architectural features.

5. Apply Protective Coatings

Once the surface is smooth and clean, apply a rust-inhibiting primer followed by a direct-to-metal (DTM) paint or powder coating. These coatings are formulated for wrought iron to protect against weather damage.

Furniture: A fresh coat of paint or protective finish prevents rust and refreshes the look. Optional: apply auto wax for extra shine and protection.

Fences and Gates: Powder coating is a stylish finish that delivers increased durability for areas with heavy exposure.

Doors and Railings: Choose a paint finish that includes rust inhibitors for longer-lasting protection.

DIY vs Professional Wrought Iron Restoration

Our team of award-winning craftspeople combine traditional blacksmithing skills with modern protective finishes to restore the iron’s strength and visual appeal. From ornate fences to imposing entrance gates, no project is too complicated for the Presige Wrought Iron team. If you’re restoring wrought iron railings, intricate balustrades or window grilles, our services will help preserve the design while improving functionality.

DIY restoration

If you’re keen to give it a go, DIY may be suitable for small projects, such as a garden chair with light rust or a fence panel needing a new coat of paint. Nowhere near as complex as the restoration of wrought iron gates, for minor projects, you can often sand, clean, and repaint these items yourself to extend their life.

Professional Restoration

Expert help is the better choice for large wrought iron gates or fences with structural damage, decorative or intricate pieces requiring delicate work, and heritage or architectural wrought iron features where high-quality craftsmanship is important.

Tips to Prevent Future Damage

Whether you’re restoring older pieces or you’ve just purchased one of our stunning custom designs, maintaining your wrought iron is easy with these helpful tips:

Clean and dry at least twice a year to inspect for damage and apply protective finishes like wax or coatings.

If you notice chips or scratches, touch them up immediately to prevent rust from forming on the unprotected metal.

Avoid harsh chemicals that strip protective finishes.

For gates and fences, oil hinges regularly to prevent wear.

Maybe you’re building a home or undertaking renovations. Perhaps you want a statement piece to set your home or business apart. Choosing the right material to breathe life into your dreams can keep you up at night. But it doesn’t have to.

In this guide, we answer the most common questions we get asked about the difference between iron and steel, and settle the age-old steel versus iron debate once and for all. Spoiler alert: we’re team wrought iron. We’re firm believers that wrought iron’s durability and versatility triumph over mass-produced steel products every day, and that opting for steel over wrought iron is a mistake we’ve seen people make too many times.

Steel versus iron – Comparison

Put simply, iron and steel are different metals. That means they have different properties that lend themselves to very different uses. They’re also made in completely different ways. Iron is a naturally occurring element, whereas steel is an alloy (or mixture) of iron and carbon. Wrought iron is also an alloy, but it has a significantly lower carbon content than steel, giving it a malleability that’s hard to match.

Manufacturing difference

Whether you’re looking for Stylish Security Screen Doors That Will Make An Entrance, or looking for Outdoor Fence Decoration Ideas To Transform Your Home, the way it’s made makes all the difference, and is what separates wrought iron and steel when it comes to strength, durability, beauty and longevity.

Wrought means ‘worked iron’. It’s a material whose story is romantically interwoven with blacksmiths, forges, hammers and anvils. If you’re thinking of the glow of hot iron fresh from the fire, the ring of the hammer as it’s pounded and persuaded into place and a highly skilled artisan blacksmith, you’re spot on.

Wrought iron is created by mixing liquid iron with slag in an environment designed to keep its carbon content low. It’s a finely tuned balancing act that takes years of training and dedication to master. That’s why it’s not uncommon for one skilled artisan to complete the whole process of manufacturing something from wrought iron from beginning to end. Too much carbon, and the iron becomes brittle and unmalleable. For example, cast iron has a higher carbon content than wrought iron. This makes it ideal for pouring into moulds, but it can’t be worked, shaped, stretched, or curved in the same way that wrought iron can be.

If you’re thinking about steel making, you should have a very different picture in mind: a large, offshore commercial foundry, dozens, if not hundreds, of workers, machines and robots and a rigid, production line process. That’s all very well if you want what everyone else wants: a one-size-fits-all, cookie-cutter solution.

Steel is the end product of a process that combines iron, carbon and other elements and compounds. Steels fall into four main sub-categories: carbon steel, alloy steel, tool steel and stainless steel. The end result depends on the manufacturing process and the elements added during that process. Steel was the end result of a search for cheaper, quicker ways to mass-produce building materials to feed the demands of a burgeoning building and construction industry towards the end of the 19th century.

Difference in appearance

Wrought iron has a distinctive ‘wood grain’ finish thanks to the inclusion of slag in its composition. Its malleability also makes it distinctive—it’s commonly worked into ornate, detailed and intricate pieces.
Where wrought iron has a beautiful dark lustre, steel has a distinctively industrial appearance. Steel is also commonly coated with paints to add to its durability (e.g. Colorbond). Unlike wrought iron, it’s much lighter in colour and far less malleable, meaning it’s commonly manufactured into simple, geometric designs.

Steel or wrought iron – which is better?

We might be a little biased, but we’re firm believers that wrought iron trumps steel every time. It’s practical, beautiful and timeless—perfect for custom wrought iron design ideas for modern Australian homes. No matter the current fads and trends, the built-in obsolescence and throwaway mentality of modern consumerism, there’s always a place for the bespoke, the individual and the beautiful. Here are three reasons we say you should choose wrought iron over steel every time:

Longevity: If properly maintained, wrought iron will last for generations, making it a worthy investment. It’s much less susceptible to the type of corrosion that spells the end for inferior steel products. That’s particularly relevant in Queensland, where our humid climate and coastal living mean corrosion should be at the forefront of your mind when you’re choosing between steel and wrought iron.

Strength and durability: Cost shouldn’t be the only factor when you’re making a decision between wrought iron and steel. There’s a huge variation in types and qualities of steel products, especially in a market flooded with cheap imports. With wrought iron, you get a consistently strong and durable product that’s well-placed to withstand sudden, heavy blows. It’s naturally more corrosion resistant than steel, making it ideal for fences, security doors and window grilles. One of the truly amazing properties of wrought iron is that it combines aesthetics with functionality, meaning you not only get a beautiful product, but one that will last a lifetime.

Greater scope for expressing your individuality with wrought iron: There’s no scope for expressing your individuality with steel. However, the world’s your oyster with wrought iron. It can be worked into intricate designs, from the contemporary to the classical. If you can dream a design in wrought iron we can make it a reality for you. With wrought iron, you’re free to create a statement piece; be it a sweeping balustrade, a jaw-dropping piece of furniture, a gate that stops traffic or a fence that adds incredible street appeal and value to your property.

People often associate intricate wrought iron designs with Gothic-era architecture and grand old sandstone buildings. And while it’s true that wrought iron is a traditional material, it’s also a timeless one.

Whether you’re looking to add a hint of old-world charm to an otherwise modern Australian home or install a new security door on an inner-city pad, wrought iron is a durable, versatile material that is perfect for adding a touch of elegance to any build.

Below, we discuss what makes wrought iron design ideas so perfect for modern Australian homes and share some of the most popular wrought iron design ideas we’ve had the pleasure of bringing to life.

Why wrought iron design ideas are perfect for modern Australian aesthetics

Aesthetic appeal – natural materials like timber cladding, slate, steel and glass are integral to contemporary Australian architecture. Available in a range of earthy tones and sleek, geometric designs, wrought iron seamlessly compliments each of these materials.

Versatility – thanks to its strength, wrought iron can be forged into a wide variety of designs, from minimalist geometric designs to intricate woven patterns. This makes it an ideal choice to blend in with the clean lines of a contemporary build or serve as a statement piece.

Durability – wrought iron is stronger and more durable than alternatives like cast iron and aluminium, making it a great option to stand up to the harsh Australian climate.

Wrought iron fence design ideas

There are countless ways to customise a wrought iron fence to suit your home. For a contemporary look, opt for a design that gives you clean, straight lines by choosing vertical or horizontal bars.

The fence in the picture below is a great example of a modern design that blends evenly spaced bars with simple decorative finials (the piece at the top of each bar) to create a contemporary feel.

Installing a wrought iron panel between sections of an older existing wall is another great way to modernise your fence. In the example below, a wrought iron panel with a simple lead motif fills the space between two sides of an old stone wall for a fresh look.

Contemporary wrought iron fences don’t have to be completely geometric either—the balcony railing in the picture below is a great example of a slightly more intricate design that utilises a less ornate scroll pattern than you might see with old-fashioned designs, to create a refined, modern look.

Wrought iron gate design ideas

Mention wrought iron and a curved wrought iron gate with sharp finials is sure to be the first image that springs to mind for most people. But wrought iron gate design ideas have evolved a lot since the 1800s.

The wide, flat-top fence in the image below is a great example of a modern wrought iron gate design. Vertical bars, combined with the flat bar across the top, make for a clean look that perfectly frames the subtle floral design in the panelling.

The picture below is another example of a modern gate design. Instead of clean, vertical lines, this gate takes advantage of wrought iron’s malleability by incorporating abstract, wavy bars with flat tops.

Wrought iron staircase design ideas

Wrought iron works just as well inside as it does outside, making it a popular choice for staircase balustrades. When it comes to wrought iron staircase design ideas, the options are endless. For an ultra-modern, industrial-inspired look, the owners of the staircase pictured below opted for slender, vertical struts and a simple railing. The polished black colour accentuates the simple design and helps the staircase blend with the rest of the décor.

The staircase below is a great example of how wrought iron can be used in combination with other materials for an elegant look. Here, the owners have opted to use wrought iron in a geometric design, almost reminiscent of Art Deco motifs, to serve as a railing on top of their existing staircase. Using the wrought iron just for the top of the staircase balustrade adds interest without dominating the space.

Contemporary wrought iron designs don’t have to be sleek and square, as demonstrated in the example below. Here, the homeowners have adopted a maximalist approach to designing this wrought iron staircase, opting for a more ornate but still modern, swirled scroll design. The curves are offset by the otherwise clean lines of the staircase preventing the design from being overly busy.

Wrought iron door design ideas

From bespoke entryways to robust security doors, wrought iron is a great material for creating a statement door for your home. The beauty of wrought iron doors lies in their ability to provide added peace of mind while allowing light and air to flow through to your house.

Just like the other wrought iron design ideas we’ve explored, the trick to creating a modern wrought iron door is to keep it simple and look to incorporate elements from the door’s surroundings. The door in the photo below is a great example of a wrought iron security door that incorporates leaf motifs to blend in with the hedges on either side of the walkway.

The door below is another great example of an ultra-modern, wrought iron door we’ve designed for one of our clients. In this piece, long, slender wrought iron bars are curved elegantly to give a frond-like appearance. To give the door a fresh look while also serving as an extra security feature, we opted to leave off the crossbar at the top of the door.

Wrought iron has been used in the construction process as early as 2000 BC, and had widespread use in the nineteenth century. Although technological advances have seen an increase in less expensive alternatives, the industry is as popular as ever due to the many benefits of wrought iron. Here, we look at the amazing properties of wrought iron, and why a wrought iron fence, entryway, gate or door will make a stunning and long-lasting addition to your home.

What’s the difference between iron and wrought iron?

The word “iron” derives from an Anglo-Saxon word, “iren”. It may have been derived from words meaning “holy metal” because it was used to make swords that were used in the Crusades. The iron element’s atomic number is 26, and its chemical element is the symbol “Fe”, which is derived from the Latin “ferrum”, which means “firmness”. In its natural form, iron is a raw element that is harvested from the earth.

Wrought iron is an iron alloy and has a very low carbon content. This results in it being malleable, tough, long-lasting, and easily welded compared to pure iron. Before the development of effective methods of steelmaking, wrought iron was the most common form of malleable iron. The term “wrought” means “worked” because wrought iron is rolled, hammered or otherwise worked under heat while it was hot enough to expel molten slag.

What are the physical properties of wrought iron?

The physical properties of iron and wrought iron differ. Wrought iron traditionally consists of around 99.4 per cent iron by mass. Its carbon content is typically less than 0.08 per cent compared to cast iron, which generally has between 2.1 per cent and 4 per cent carbon content.

Other mechanical properties of wrought iron include its tensile strength. This refers to the maximum stress that a material can withstand while being pulled or stretched without being permanently damaged. The tensile strength of wrought iron is very high, around 300MPa. MPa refers to megapascal, which is a measure of compressive strength. This is compared to low-tensile materials like rubber, plastics, and low-carbon steels.

What are some beneficial properties of wrought iron?

1. Strength and durability

One of the key characteristics of wrought iron is its strength and durability. Unlike cast iron, which is brittle and prone to cracking, wrought iron is ductile and malleable, making it highly resistant to deformation and impact. This strength makes wrought iron an ideal material for applications where structural integrity is essential, such as fences, railings, and staircases. Other materials like aluminium and wood can be used for these applications, however, wood can warp and rot fairly quickly and is susceptible to weather changes, and aluminium isn’t as strong. This strength and durability is also due to the high melting point of iron, which is around 1583°C.

2. Corrosion resistance

The low carbon levels of wrought iron makes it less susceptible to rust than other forms of iron. However, it still does need regular maintenance to prevent rust altogether. Regarding how to prevent rust, regular cleaning and protective coating applications can ensure it retains its structural integrity for years to come.

3. Easy maintenance

Although the initial cost of wrought iron may be a bit higher than that of other materials, the low maintenance involved is a redeeming feature. Indoor items require very little maintenance aside from occasional dusting, and the cleaning of outdoor items is a bucket of soapy water!

4. Aesthetic appeal

One of the most striking characteristics of wrought iron is its aesthetic appeal. The malleability of the material allows it to be forged into intricate patterns, structures and designs that are both functional and decorative. From simple geometric shapes to elaborate scrollwork, wrought iron can be customised to suit any architectural style, from classic and traditional, to modern and minimalist.

5. Versatility

Wrought iron is also versatile, and can be used on gates, fences, balustrades, entrance ways, doors, windows, furniture, and even artwork. It can also be combined with other materials, like wood or glass, to create unique and visually appealing design elements.

6. Value

There’s no denying that a beautifully designed wrought iron structure adds timely beauty to a home. The durability, price and low maintenance cost also mean that an upfront investment can add additional value to your home. Contact our expert team and discover the amazing properties of wrought iron.

Wrought iron is a valuable material for both decorative and functional purposes, and many artistic works and historical structures made from wrought iron are still appreciated for their longevity and craftsmanship. It is also incredibly flexible and can be used on various structures, from fences and gates to security doors, balustrades, custom furniture, and more. Here, we focus on some of the benefits of wrought iron fences, as well as some front yard wrought iron fence ideas that will inspire your next residential or commercial design project.

Benefits of wrought iron fences

Durability: Wrought iron is highly durable and generally lasts for decades. Unlike timber, it is resistant to harsh weather and pests. It won’t deteriorate or discolour as quickly as other materials, and its longevity and sturdiness also mean lower upkeep costs and excellent value over time.

Security: Wrought iron provides excellent security due to its robust construction, making it difficult to breach or climb over. A ‘built to last’ and ‘hard to climb’ front fence will deter intruders from going over or through!

Low maintenance: While wrought iron fences might require some maintenance to prevent rust, they generally need less upkeep than other materials. Regular painting and occasional inspections can keep them in good condition for years.

Longevity: Properly maintained, wrought iron fences can last for generations and are a valuable long-term investment.

Added value: A wrought iron fence can increase the value of your property and make it more attractive to potential buyers.

Eco-friendly: Wrought iron is a recyclable material, making it a more environmentally friendly option than other materials.

Visibility: Unlike solid fences, wrought iron fences offer visibility while providing a barrier — a combination of aesthetics and security.

Safety: A fence is vital for ensuring the safety of your children and pets. A fence built to be solid and secure will stop little ones (including pets) safely inside your property’s perimeter.

Aesthetics: Wrought iron fences have a classic, elegant look that can enhance the curb appeal of any property. They come in various designs and can be customised to suit different architectural styles.

Wrought iron fence ideas

With all the benefits of wrought iron fencing mentioned above, there is another — versatility. This offers many ways to customise and curate your fencing to suit your home, lifestyle, logistical needs, and personal taste. Here are some inspirational wrought iron fence ideas.

Break-and-enters and burglaries are two of the most common crimes and can occur at any time of the day or night. With this type of crime on the rise, the physical security of your windows, doors, outdoor fencing and entrance gates is vital. The advantages of wrought iron, including wrought iron security front doors, range from security and durability to other factors like being low maintenance, providing airflow and privacy, and enhancing street appeal with their stylish aesthetics.

The simple fact that wrought iron is so robust also adds an imposing look that will potentially stop would-be thieves in their tracks as they move on to an easier target. Practically nothing can penetrate solid iron, and there is virtually no way tools or bare hands can manipulate it. Custom-made wrought iron security screen doors also allow you to add personalised character and beauty to your home’s design, combining style, substance and security in equal measure. They are the perfect combination of form, function and fashionability, whether you’re after a contemporary design or something more timeless.

Regardless, they will provide an unmatched architectural quality to your home for years to come. Here is a selection of stylish security screen doors that, with the collaboration of our architecture and building design partners, we have crafted for our valued clients.

A stunning entrance to what could be a church or a welcoming home, this design shows how simple design elements transform wrought iron security screen doors into a feature that is truly character-filled. This door design includes multiple S-scrolls in two feature elements, top and bottom, and a vertical coupling of S-scrolls to add visual interest. Topped by an amazing archway shape and surrounded by variegated brickwork in a multitude of hues, it’s a heavenly combination of style and functionality.

This is a unique take on iron security screen doors, that reflect security as well as hint of sophistication and grandeur. The grey colour choice is subtle, allowing the eye to move through the entrance into the home’s stunning interiors. Essentially, it makes a statement and evokes security, while enticing the visitor to explore further — once they have the approval of the owners, of course! The gate itself has a wonderful array of free-flowing curved elements that invoke a sense of calmness and hint at whispers of sprouting natural elements.

Archways across history have symbolised many things from strength and support to lightness and “openness within density”, and they are often deemed as a “vault of the sky”. This wrought iron masterpiece definitely does its archway design justice, allowing lots of light to infiltrate its strong barriers. It’s also breathtaking, with its soaring height, and superb use of a combination of features, including scrolls, “basket” style balusters, and finials (that normally sit atop a wrought iron fence) within the design itself. Divine.

Opting for a wrought iron security door doesn’t mean you have to own a palatial mansion. Anyone who appreciates the durability, strength and stylistic advantages of wrought iron can enjoy its functionality and beauty. In this instance, its beauty is also in its simplicity. Multiple C-scrolls combine as a central feature, with horizontal and vertical elements adding additional interest. And the brickwork and somewhat imposing nature of wrought iron itself also guarantees would-be thieves go elsewhere!

Now this is a double door design with a difference, and not just because there are two mirroring doors to admire. Features include scrolls galore of varying sizes as well as vertical art deco-type insets. These are all encased in a beautiful soft-blue framework that is consciously unpolished with a muted effect, adding a touch of historical whimsy. Its mirrored effect is also incredible reflecting chandelier-ed interiors as well as sparkling bathing exteriors.

This is another wrought iron security screen door that is commanding, functional and stylish over its double-door framework. Edged with wonderfully organic timber work, the door itself oozes elegance with its impressive scrollwork that covers the entire door. Predominantly featuring C-scrolls, each one seamlessly connects to the next, creating a flowing, calming design. Backed by screens that add privacy and an elusive glimpse into the interiors, it is also topped by an additional wrought iron feature that elevates it even further (and the chandelier’s a pretty good addition as well!)

Performing double door duty again, this wrought iron masterpiece boasts multiple textures and materials – wrought iron on the external doors and then separate timber doors. Both combine as an earthy nod to nature. The timber doors are a rich reddish hue that contrast with the dramatic black of the wrought iron, allowing both to meld rather than compete. And the design on the wrought iron is simply ethereal with its large C-scrolls morphing into non-green greenery that is bursting with life and edged with leafy accents.

This design is another nod to the natural world with the addition of minimal structural characteristics that evoke feelings of vibrant, unrestricted growth. The wrought iron work is free flowing and symbolic of riverbed reeds or paddock grasses, and the absence of bulky posts or even a frame at the top of the door adds to its creativity. This is a fantastic example of how stylish security screen doors can transform a home’s entrance, and provide security while maintaining the owner’s unique vision.

This is a gorgeous version of an iron security door that showcases just how flexible wrought iron designs can be across a wide range of home designs. The owners of this home obviously favour a more traditional approach with curved interiors, timber flooring and stained glass edging a priority. The addition of wrought iron in the door, however, blends seamlessly with these design choices. Once again, it adds a secure, robust welcome but is softened by the scrollwork and the forged “basket” balusters.

How magical is this entranceway? Sigh. But firstly, the wrought iron security door. An extended width, it is majestic without being too showy. Design-wise, it features two sizable C-scrolls that are intertwined with smaller heart-shaped scrolls. All of these are intertwined with leafy inserts that are just pure enchantment. Unique brickwork frames the top and the internals of the entranceway, and the leafy blossoming hedging just amps up the wow factor.

Gates aren’t just access points to and from a property. They can create an impression, add value and street appeal, and complement your home’s design and your own aesthetic preferences. Here are some fence decoration ideas to transform your home and some wrought iron entrance gates to inspire you when considering your next outdoor renovation.

This home’s sliding iron entrance gate exudes a commanding presence with its robust design and sturdy columns. Black is also a dominant hue and one of the most popular wrought iron gate colours. However, these are softened by multiple balusters with their hollow basket design and a stunning combination of C and S-shaped scrolls at the top of the structure. These meet at the impressive finial, which is topped with a lofty regal spear.

This is a breathtaking example of a custom-designed entrance gate, and wow, does it make an entrance! But its size is offset by the delicate ironwork throughout, which combines a multitude of C and S-shaped scrolls that climb all the way to the top. And the feature pattern, are they 8-pointed stars or simply divine daisy-like flowers? Regardless, they are stunning.

This is another imposing example of an entrance gate design that should not be messed with! Featuring a powerfully built foundation in no-nonsense black, it is edged by solid brick posts that up the security ante. Simple balusters, a few C-shaped scrolls and an expanse of Roman spike finials complete this masterpiece.

This entrance door gate design features a solid wrought iron panel at the bottom of the structure with four custom motifs that add interest and privacy. Two baluster designs are interspersed across its width, and scrolls feature intricate twists with bursts of sprouting foliage. The curved top creates balance by softening the whole effect.

When it comes to wrought iron entrance gates, this one is a visual feast that perfectly complements the Federation-style home. Edged by rustic bricked pillars, its unique features are a combination of curved-ended balusters, scrolls and leafwork galore. It is topped by a single finial with a lovely (almost) heart-shaped feature. As the saying goes, “Home is where the heart is.”

The design features of this entrance gate are a unique combination of softness and strength. The finials are a strong spearhead design that signifies security. The softer elements are the scrolls, and there are lots of C and S-shaped versions here. Given the size of the gate, they help balance the elements and create visual interest. A touch of whimsy is also included with the scrolls at the bottom of the gate that hint at upside-down hearts. Love!

This is another divine example of wrought iron entrance gates that are both bold and beautiful. The matte grey tones first add a sophisticated edge and give a softer impression when combined with the backdrop of the home’s white exterior. Soaring posts on either side feature pointed caps, and this element is replicated with the fleur-de-lis finials. Scrolls are sprinkled throughout at various sizes, and they are superb foliage elements that give this structure a life (almost) of its own!

Custom foliage elements are again evident in this design, although they are a little more ordered in their layout. However, they are still soft enough to distract from the strong vertical lines of the balusters and columns. Scrolls feature on the top section interspersed with lovely leafy highlights, which are crowned with a statement fleur-de-lis finial.

When considering the design of an entrance gate of a house, form and function are of course important. But a truly great design includes a nod to aesthetics as well. Here, the two combine beautifully. The balusters have wonderful feature elements, and the length of octagons at the bottom give the fence personality. Swirls feature in the centre and on the curved top, and the whole effect blends seamlessly with the side fencing and its spearhead finials (you can see a glimpse of these on the right of the photo).

These wrought iron entrance gates certainly make a design statement with a combination of multiple elements that ensure this structure stands loud and proud. Intricate twists and spirals feature from top to bottom and are edged by vertical balusters to break up the busyness. A centre finial surrounded by more spirals has a commanding presence with gilded touches that exude style and sophistication. Bravo!

This is another superb example of how gilded elements can transform a neutral colourway into something that sparkles (literally!) This design exudes luxury and elegance as well as signifying strength and security. What a combination! Scrolls abound in all shapes and sizes, and gilded leafwork is sprinkled throughout. Gilded touches are also evident on the balustrades and the three fleur-de-lis finials, with the centre version creating a magnificent focal point.

This is a smaller version of wrought iron entrance gates, but nonetheless, it is an attention grabber. Gilded elements again feature on the scrollwork and on the three fleur-de-lis finials. However, these have been subtly included so they don’t overpower the design, and they let the other elements (like the fantastic leafwork) shine as well. This is a clever strategy as this home also has front fencing that mirrors the entrance gate. It is a considered balance and one that certainly works.

This is an entrance gate design for a home that definitely communicates security. Standing tall and proud, it is a no-nonsense design with predominately vertical and horizontal features from the straight-up balusters topped by more straight-up spiked finials. The thick, sturdy posts with their sturdy caps continue this theme, although a subtle weave of meandering foliage adds some curved relief.

Multiple design layers add intrigue to this entrance gate design. At the bottom is a wide panel that leads into multiple balusters with curved ends. The top section features more simple balusters until you reach the curved top. This is where the eye is led to highlight the elegant scrollwork that is crowned with a sweetheart beckoning visitors to enter a welcoming home.

Wrought iron has a long and impressive history and is still renowned for its unique properties, from its durability and aesthetics to its strength and malleability. But like most things that are affected by wear and tear, it does need regular maintenance. So whether you want to do some upkeep on your sturdy wrought iron fencewhether you want to do some upkeep on your sturdy wrought iron fence or your favourite piece of wrought iron furniture, how do you clean wrought iron to keep it in top condition and extend its life? or your favourite piece of wrought iron furniture, how do you clean wrought iron to keep it in top condition and extend its life?

The best way to clean wrought iron

Equipment

To clean your wrought iron effectively and efficiently, you will need:

Two buckets or spray bottles

A mild cleanser

Sponges

Rags

A file

Steel wool

Step-by-step guide

Step 1: Clear a space outside that will cope with dirt and water.

Step 2: When cleaning wrought iron, fill your spray bottles or buckets with warm water. Use spray bottles for smaller items and buckets for larger items. With the buckets, fill one with warm water for cleaning and one with warm water for rinsing. If you have access to a hose, you’ll only need one spray bottle or bucket, as you can use the hose for rinsing.

Step 3: Prepare the cleaning solution. Add a mild cleanser to one of the spray bottles and the ‘cleaning’ bucket. Dish soap, liquid soap or a gentle household cleaner should be fine to use; however, avoid antibacterial soaps or cleaners that contain bleach, as they may damage the wrought iron. Vinegar may work as well; however, probably won’t remove tough stains on outdoor items. Follow these ratios for cleansers:

Liquid soap – 1 tablespoon to 950mL of water

Household cleaner – ¼ cup to 1900mL of water

White vinegar – ½ cup to 1900mL of water

Step 4: Remove non-wrought iron material if possible. Depending on what you are cleaning (for example, wrought iron furniture), it may have timber or upholstered components. Remove these if you can before cleaning. Non-wrought iron sections may also be able to be unbolted from the wrought iron components. If not, be careful when you clean where the two materials meet. Cling wrap is useful for covering up the non-wrought iron sections so they don’t get wet or dirty.

Step 5: In terms of the best way to clean wrought iron, remove dirt and dust by cleaning the wrought iron in a circular motion with a sponge, working on small sections at a time. Don’t be too vigorous, as too much force may damage the surface of the wrought iron, making it susceptible to rust.

Step 6: Rinse the item thoroughly with a clean sponge and the rinsing water in your second spray bottle or bucket. If you have access to one, you can also use a hose. It’s essential no debris or grime remains on the surface of the wrought iron. If you wring out your sponge and the water is clear, you’re ready for the next step. If not, keep rinsing.

Step 7: Allow the wrought iron to dry completely. Indoor items should be wiped with a clean cloth until all excess moisture is removed. Outdoor items can be left to dry in the sun. If you want to speed the process up, you can also use a hairdryer or portable fan.

How to clean rust off wrought iron

Once you’ve performed the basic steps to clean your wrought iron, there are a few other more intensive steps that will help with restoration and rejuvenation, particularly if you notice rust spots. Rust is a natural enemy of wrought iron, so it should be dealt with as soon as possible. In terms of cleaning rust off wrought iron.

Step 1: File down the rust. If your wrought iron fencing or furniture looks a little worse for wear, use a coarse wire brush, sandpaper or a piece of steel wool to remove any ingrained dirt or visible rust spots that can’t be removed with a general clean alone. A brass wire wheel attached to a power drill can also work well.

Step 2: If the wrought iron has stubborn rust spots, you can also try phosphoric acid. It converts rust into iron phosphate, which looks like a black hard crust. Apply as per the manufacturer’s instructions and leave on until the chemical reaction occurs. Phosphoric acid can be bought as a gel or spray, so use whichever will be easiest to apply. A spray may be better for hard-to-reach areas.

Step 3: When cleaning rust off wrought iron, once the conversion has taken place, use a wire brush or sandpaper to lightly remove the iron phosphate. Note: Take care when using this product. Use protective personal safety gear, including glasses, gloves and a mask.

Step 4: Once you’ve dislodged all the rust and exposed the clean wrought iron underneath, brush away the excess flakes and re-clean the item to ensure that any tiny remnants of rust are removed.

Step 5: If damaged paintwork needs to be restored, prepare the surface for refinishing by removing any visible rust with sandpaper, or consider renting a portable sandblaster to speed up the process. Remove any dust or debris, then rinse and dry the surface.

Step 6: Paint on a rust-resistant primer, ensuring all surfaces are evenly coated.

Step 7: Use a paint specifically suited to outdoor metal products and follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to use it. This will ensure your item has the ultimate protection from the elements. Paint once, allow to dry thoroughly, and then apply a second coat. If spray painting, ensure adequate ventilation and use a drop cloth to prevent paint staining any surfaces.

Step 8: Repeat as needed.

Preventative maintenance of wrought iron

Preventative maintenance is also worth undertaking to prolong the life of wrought iron. Remove dirt, dust and sand regularly with a feather duster or a lint-free microfibre cloth. Regularly buff the item with a soft, lint-free cloth. Use a specially formulated wax product and a soft cloth to apply it with small circular motions. Allow it to dry completely, and then use the reverse of the cloth to polish the wrought iron. This will protect it from wear, and in the case of outdoor items, it will also protect it from the harsh Australian elements. Plastic covers can also safeguard items like wrought iron furniture.
