Where. Have. I. Been? I have (unfortunately) not posted on Dear Beautiful... for almost 5 entire months! I truly apologize :(. However, my reasons as to my absence are still pretty great. Throughout the last 5 months my life has been going through a whirlwind of changes: graduating high school, starting college, balancing my academics, being away from home, etc. All that crazy stuff! It's been hard to simply balance academics, social life, my sanity, and maintain my blog. However, my goal is to revive my blog. Blogging was, and is, my form of therapy. I love to write, especially about the topics that I love. So, be on the lookout for more posts from soon ranging on topics about fashion and beauty to the college lifestyle!

Beauty 101: What's Up With O.P.I. Infinite Shine?

Recently, I (thankfully!) found a replacement for gel nails. Gel nails were nice and long withstanding, however, made my natural nails thinner and took up a lot of space and time. The latest replacement is O.P.I.'s Infinite Shine! Infinite Shine is a three-bottle process and doesn't need any lights or excess nail prep. The purpose of Infinite Shine is to create a shiny, lustrous polish that lasts up to 10 days! And, although it does not advertise to be chip free for 2 weeks, the shine and polish does last for at least 7 days.

Now, the process consists of about 3-4 steps. It begins with applying the Infinite Shine 1 Primer, practically the equivalent of a clear base coat. Then, of course, the Infinite Shine 2 Nail Lacquer in any color choice. I purchased a bright pink for the summer and a nude polish for a simple and clean manicure. The Infinite Shine 2 Nail Lacquer does require a good amount of shaking before use as well as about 2 coats of color. After applying step 2, the process finishes out with Infinite Shine 3 Gloss which is similar to top coat. After these three steps, let the nails dry and settle.

Above are pictures of my Infinite Shine manicure in nude. The nail polish is extremely true to color after being applied to my nails, even after just one coat! My only "big" tips for the Infinite Shine process is to make sure the polishes are properly shaken before applying. If not, the manicure could turn into a clumpy, streaky, mess. However, unlike gel nails, Infinite Shine does not seem to thin or discolor the nails, takes a lot less time, and comes off with acetone-based nail polish remover, like any other nail polish! It's a complete manicure win in my beauty book!

Shopping is probably at the top my list of favorite things to do on the weekend; however, bringing it home and styling can be a different story sometimes. For instance, spring is here and summer is coming, meaning shoulders will be out in an array of styles and cuts. So, what type of bra should we wear under these crazy cut tops? Well, I have a couple of bra style tips, just keep reading below:

Bralette (top left): Bralettes are the perfect bra to place underneath sheer tops, kimonos, and whenever you want to add a touch of lace to an outfit. Typically bras should not be shown underneath clothing, however a bralette resembles an even shorter version of a crop top while still supporting the girls!
Bandeau (bottom left): Similar to bralettes, bandeaus are perfect for keeping your "goods" covered without having to layer up with t-shirts and camisoles. Bandeaus are super cheap and can be found anywhere from department stores to Wal-Mart!
Strapless Bra (top right): Every girl should own at least one strap less bra! Strapless bras are perfect for just about any top: spaghetti straps, halter back etc. Strapless bras also come in varieties of their own such as plunging v-neck or addable straps!
T-Shirt Bra (bottom right): The t-shirt bra is essentially an everyday bra! Be sure to try the t-shirt style bra on in the store, and even get fitted if need be! A t-shirt bra should be comfortable and, particularly, in a color that can easily mix and match with an everyday wardrobe.
Razor-Back Bra (middle): With the warmer temps, tanks and camisoles are becoming an everyday essential! A razor-back bra will help to give you the needed support and won't necessarily play peek-a-boo with your top.
Adhesive Bra (bottom middle: Now for those special events that having an "oops" moment with a bra could be mortifying, an adhesive bra is perfect. Many times strapless dress and formal gowns with cut-outs or more revealing shapes still need a bra. However, it's always extremely hard to find the perfect bra style to pair it with! Adhesive bras can be found in almost any skin tone and bra size. Just adhere the sticky side of the bra to the breast and instantly have the feel and look of wearing a bra!

Beauty 101: My Everyday Make-Up Routine

Long time, no blog! I truly apologize for the blogging delay, senior year is crazier than ever! However, with all the craze of academia, my make-up routine has come a long way. Instead of spending time scouring the shelves for red and pink lipsticks, I love finding great mascaras, light-weight foundations, and fierce eyeliners. So, for my new daily makeup routine, I incorporate just those tools. Keep reading below to find out the steps to my make-up routine:

Clean, moisturized face! I always start my make-up routine with a cleansed face. I typically cleanse my skin with cold water or dabs of Neutrogena Rapid Clear toner. This helps to maintain my skins natural health. I also follow up with a moisturize to give my skin an extra glow!
Clinique Powder Foundation/Maybelline BB Cream! Foundation ultimately helps me to cover up my dark spots and make my skin appear more even. The BB cream also helps to fade my dark spots which is a double plus!
The brows! For my eyebrows, I use Benefit Gimme Brow. This product looks like a mascara brush, but is used for your brows! It helps to define the shape and fill in any gaps or sparse areas. Plus, if too much products gets in the brows, simply use an eyebrow brush to wipe the excess away.
Neutral shades! Neutral eyeshadow shades always make brown eyes pop! My favorite shades are dark browns for the crease, soft golds, and lighter browns for the brow bone.
Finish the eye! In order to finish off my eyes, I love to do a slight cat eye with pencil liner in either black or brown. I then finish it off with mascara, usually brands such as Clinique and Benefit.
Luscious lips! Now, I am not one for lots of lip color, but I do like my lips to feel and look soft and smooth. So, I always use a lipbalm to keep them as just that!

Skincare Secrets: Adding Zinc to Skin Care

So I've always been prone to breakouts, especially during "that" time of the month. These breakouts would involve bumps everywhere, some that were even painful! Now, I've tried many products, some help me make substantial strides to clearer skin, especially zinc vitamins. For the past month and a half, I have been consistently taking a zinc vitamin alongside my breakfast. Zine is most helpful with immune health, but also acne and boils. By taking Zinc, I have escaped the winter colds and flu spread throughout my house. And, for my benefit, less breakouts and painful bumps. Of course, taking a regular multivitamin can also do the trick, along with drinking at least 3 glass of water per day, washing the face daily, and getting 8 hours of sleep.

During the holiday season, it gets hard to maintain a budget with the stacks of accumulating stacks of coupons, receipts, and discount emails that seem to be never ending. And, if you're in the same situation as me, you might just be trying to bounce off from low funds due to the holidays. Follow the tips below to save up your cash!

Never go shopping without a list! A lack of purpose leaves rooms for unnecessary items in your cart.
Always set a budget, or spending limit, before going out to shop. Setting shopping guidelines helps you to be more wallet-conscious while shopping.
Utilize shopping apps! Apps like Retail Me Not and Shop Savvy help you to find the best deals and coupons, plus they're free!
Never be afraid to ask about coupons and discounts. Many stores have student discounts, military discounts, and senior citizen discounts. Some store clerks are even willingly to give you a store coupon.

If your winter is anything like mine, dry lips are always involved. No matter how much chapstick I slather on my lips, the dry air still causes them to chap. However, with the weekly lip treatment I created above, I can easily nix my dry winter lips. Keep on reading to find out the three steps in my weekly dry lips routine.

The toothbrush! Take an old tooth brush, or a new inexpensive toothbrush, to use as a lip exfoliator. Make sure to wet the toothbrush as well as your lips. Then, gently and slowly rub the toothbrush around your lips to remove the dead skin. Do so until your lips feel smooth (lips should not feel raw or red, or else your rubbing to hard/long!)
A lip scrub! A lip scrub exfoliates the lips similar to the toothbrush. Apply the lip scrub using either your fingers or the tooth brush, following the same directions as step 1. Also, if you don't want to invest in a lip scrub, make your own using a mixture of sugar and water.
Lip balm! Always follow this lip treatment by applying a lip balm. Try using a lip balm specifically for dry lips such as EOS or Vaseline. Be sure to apply a lip balm at least once a day to protect your lips throughout the week.

Lately, every celeb has had a case of "scissor fever". So many celebs have caught on to the "lob" trend. What is a lob you ask? Well, it's a combination of long + bob, a long bob. Usually bobs are cut above the shoulders, around the chin area. A lob, however, is cut at or just below the shoulders. This gives the hair room to still be pulled into a ponytail or bun, perfect for so many of us who still want versatility. And, as shown above, a lob can be transformed into so many looks. Help! My Nail Polish is Ruined!

In the world of manicures and pedicures, there is only one thing worse than a chipped nail...a ruined nail polish color! (especially in your favorite color!) I have probably witnessed hundreds of nail polish bottles become hard and guppy, clumpy, or just "stuck" inside the bottle. However, I have figured out some tips and tricks to making my nail polish last much longer in their bottles! Check out my tips below:

Invest in the Best! So let's just start off with the obvious, cheap nail polishes die faster. Nail polish brands such as O.P.I. and Essie are some of the best nail polish brands around because their polishes are made to last in the bottle and on your mani/pedi.
Storage is key! I used to throw all my nail polishes into a little basket, some would sit upside down and others on their side. This caused so many of my polishes to clump up on the brush bristles and around the tops caps. Nail polish sits and lasts longer when stored right side up. So, you might want to invest in a nail polish storing kit.
It's all about the temperature! Adding on to the storage tip, be sure that your nail polish sits at room temperature. Don't have them in sweltering heat or extremely cold environments, especially since the bottles are typically glass.
Pour on the Acetone! When the polish is starting to get clumpy, try pouring a small amount of acetone based nail polish remover into the bottle. Pour only a tiny droplet into the bottle and the shake it up thoroughly until the polish thins itself out.
When all else fails... Sometimes it's just time to throw in the towel and start again with a new bottle of nail polish. But, before you do that, make sure you remember the name of the polish color if you are planning on buying it again!

Hair 101: I Cut My Hair!

So in my 8 months of transitioning to natural hair, I decided it was just not for me. Now, I love natural hair, from afros to twist-outs, but not for me. I have always adored short bobs adorned with tons of layers and flips. What I especially love about my new bob cut is that it is not too short. When it's curled, the hair ends right at my chin, but when straightened, it is about an inch below. This gives me the versatility to pin pieces back, curl it, slick it back, or, when it grows about an inch out, to put it in a ponytail. I am so excited to finally have the cut I have been envying in every magazine and longing for in the back of my mind. Plus, I get to turn 18 with my version of the perfect 'do!

All summer long, my skincare goal was to recreate the smooth glow of Lupita N'yongo's gorgeous skin. Lupita's skin is so even and rich that it can make any girl enviable. However, not even the strongest products would give me the perfect glow. So, of course, I went on a Google search to find my answer. That answer ended up being two basic necessities: water and sleep. I never realized my lack of sleep and water, especially during the summer, and how much it impacted the appearance of my skin! I made it a goal to drink at least 16 oz. of water a day and get in my bed by 10 p.m. on week days. After 2 weeks of this new ritual, my skin began clearing up and looking a bit brighter. Today, my skin feels smoother and looks visibly brighter. So, I literally took it back to the basics of skincare.

Water! Skin is like a plant that needs a lot of water to keep it hydrated. As I increased my water intake for the day, my skin was visibly clearer, brighter, and healthier!
Sleep! I never realized how important sleep was to skincare as well as my overall health. Once I began getting a good night of sleep, my skin began rejuvenating itself to a greater health state. I even noticed that I felt more energized throughout the day!

I am a self-proclaimed manicure maven! My dresser is full of nail polish, from glitter polishes to bright neon polishes. An entire dresser drawer is home to nail design brushes and manicure kits. However, I won't be needing an abundance of color this Fall 2014 season. Throughout the summer, I became extremely bored within a repetition of bright pink, poppy coral, and classic red nail polish colors. So, I traded in bright colors for nude polishes. I found that the nude polishes complemented my accessories and made my fingers appear more elegant and lady-like. Now, two months later, who would've thought nude nails would become the Fall 2014 trend?! A nude nail look is all based upon your skin tone, a deep-toned lady may want to go for a more chocolate, rich nail color, a bronze-y girl for a soft tan polish, and a fairer skin girl for a creamy or pink-toned polish. Nude polishes are perfect because chips aren't as noticeable and can easily be dressed up with a coat of glitter polish.

Gwen Stefani and her fashion brand, L.A.M.B. made their return to fashion week! I have to say I am obsessed with every single look. Above are my favorite looks from the collection. L.A.M.B. S/S 2015 mixes masculinity with femininity, prints with color, and chicness with cool. Each look screams fashion in the most subtle way. Instead of going for dramatics, the line sticks with prints and color to stand out. The prints and colors make the outfit, while the models give it the chic vibes. From the line, I predict menswear inspired look, denim, and lots of unique prints and poppy colors to dominate Spring/Summer 2015. However, I must say that the fashions weren't the only thing that impressed me. Gwen made sure to use a diverse cast of models, ensuring every girl would find a model that embodies them.

I am a self-proclaimed "bag lady". If you've ever caught me at school, I probably have a huge book bag on my bike, lunch bag in my hand, and a purse clutched in my arms. However, this year I began to notice slight shoulder pains and an abundance of things I really don't need in my purse. No matter how much I cleaned and reorganized my bag, my huge satchel purse would not feel any lighter! So, this year I made an effort to find a small, chic crossbody bag that could carry my essentials: wallet, lipgloss, pencils, oil wipes, tissues, etc. I found just that in a super cute, and small, circular Jessica Simpson at T.J. Maxx! Just like the bags above, excluding the backpack, it's big enough to carry my essentials, but small enough not to weigh me down. Plus, small bags can mesh perfectly with any outfit! So, if you need a new everyday bag, try a mini-crossbody bag.

Beauty 101: How I Grew Out My Eyebrows

Like many other girls around the world, I struggled to keep a "strong brow game". My eyebrows endured about 4 years of waxing, brow shape changing, and, of course, over tweezing on my behalf. However, 6 months ago my brow maintenance had to change after my eyebrow were waxed off ultra thin a week before prom! Since that day, I hid my brow tweezers and scissors from myself (Yes, I endured the tiny, stubbly new growth!). For 2-3 months, I relied only on brushing my eyebrows and utilizing brow pencils to perfect the shape. By month 3, I used tweezers to remove hairs that were obviously outside of my natural brow shape. Through removing the out of place hairs, my brows started to form a natural arch, perfecting my brow game. Now, 6 months later, I leave the tweezers alone for at least 3 weeks before removing any out of place hairs.

Quick Tips!

Hide tweezers, eyebrow scissors, and wax! Your growing your eyebrows out, not removing them.
Brush your eyebrows with an eyebrow brush to keep them neat.
When tweezing, only tweeze hairs outside of the natural brow shape.
Place conditioners on your eyebrows to promote growth.
Don't fantasize over everyone else's eyebrows! An eyebrow shape frames an individual's face, so an eyebrow shape is unique to every person.

Whenever back to school season comes back around, I love to get a pair of new shoes. However, I make sure not to purchase anymore summer shoes: sandals, flip flops, etc. Instead, I like to get a cute pair of shoes that will work for a lot of walking, match a majority of my outfits, and make me feel like I'm walking a catwalk. Below are descriptions of my favorite back to school shoe styles and why they work!

Slip-ons! Slip-ons are a simple version of sneakers that mimic flats with a whole lot of comfort. Slip-ons come in a variety of prints and colors that will go with any outfit and fit into any style.
Oxfords! Oxfords are my favorite shoe style! Oxfords now have a feminine take on menswear, especially because of the new prints, lace additions, and other features now being added to them. Also, your feet will thank you for the comfort.
Booties! Booties are the perfect transition shoe as it gets closer to fall. Booties can work with shorts, dresses, and, of course, future fall and winter outfits.
Wedges! Heels are fabulous, but don't always work for a school day. However, wedges, especially with rubber on the bottom, can work for a school. Wedges give height and add ultimate chicness to any look without taking away too much comfort.

My favorite hair look at the moment is long braids, whether in the form of tight twists or box braids. This hairstyle lasts up to 3 months, but never gets boring. For the first three months of school, a multitude of hairstyles from buns, ponytails, and updos. Braids are perfect for those who want to grow out their hair or save on some time in the morning.

Zendaya

Zendaya makes a simple protective hairstyle look fab! A braid such as the one above is commonly called a halo braid, crown braid, or, simply, a wrap-around braid. When constructing the braid, be sure to create straight parts and detangle the hair as necessary. Finish off the braid with a bun, ponytail, or pin it up to make the braid look continuous! This look can last all week and work as a low-manipulation style.

Cymphonique Miller

Keep it cute and easy with a side braid (or, even a ponytail braid facing backwards). A braid such as Cymphonique's can be accomplished by creating a ponytail and braiding the hair in the ponytail. If any hair is wished to be left out, just create a simple part and clip it out of the way while braiding.

For me, I have always wanted to carry the cutesy, small backpacks advertised in magazines; however, they could never hold my laptop and textbooks! So, to keep a cute look and strong back, try using a Jansport backpack. I always purchase and recommend Jansports because they have a lifelong warranty/guarantee and offer a variety of colors and styles. Below are a list of my favorite backpack style for the studious and chic student:

Jansport Superbreak: This fuchsia colored, Superbreak backpack called my name as I was looking through the backpack options at Marshall's this past weekend. Since I like to wear a lot of printed outfits, I knew I wanted a solid colored backpack so I wouldn't be a clash of patterns. This bag is specifically designed to carry your entire life: laptop, textbooks, water bottle, lunch bag, and more. This bag is perfect for someone in college who needs all their items while on the go!
Jansport Florals: I am in love with the subtle florals and muted grey coloring of this backpack. This backpack is average-sized, meaning it will carry your essentials, but not as much as the Superbreak. I recommend this bag for high schoolers or anyone who doesn't carry an abundance of textbooks.

Lately I have been fawning over small handbags. A small handbag would help in the fact that I always feel like a crazy bag lady whenever I go to school. I have to carry a laptop bag, lunch bag, and backpack, the last thing I want is to carry a heavy purse everywhere. Also, my current bag is starting to cause extra stress on my shoulders, not good! Small handbags complete a look without being too overpowering. Especially in solid colors, the little bags create simplicity that can be worked into any style or outfit. Plus since the bags are so small, you'll be forced to leave those random items that only work as paperweights behind!

Nail art is the fun trend that we all love! Like any other form of art, nail art is full of infinite designs, prints, and colors. Perfect for any fashion/beauty look, mood, or self-expression for the day. However, we all know the feeling of utter disappointment when a perfectly polished nail chips. So, to combat chipped manicures, gel nails were created. Gel nails give a perfectly polished, glossy manicure that can last up to 2 weeks! What more could a nail polish maven ask for?! However, there are some pros and cons to gel nails.

Pros

As gel nail popularity continues to rise, more and more colors and nail art techniques continue to rise. So, don't even think you have to give up your favorite nail designs!
Gel nails can withstand just about anything, from digging around in your purse to washing the dishes! No chips...AT. ALL.
The glossy film of gel nails keeps your hands and nails looking fresh and well groomed.
Gel nails are super easy to apply at home! Purchase a gel nail kit, carefully follow the instruction, and you will always have top notch nails.

Cons

Although gel nails don't chip, I have experienced peeling. However, for me, the peeling usually occurs after cleaning with chemicals or subduing the polish in liquid for extended periods of time.
Nails can weaken after excessive gel nail use. When taking gel nails off, you must be very careful not to peel off the actually layer of nail because it will cause the nail to weaken.
Because gel nails are so secure on the nail, the real nails do not receive a lot of oxygen causing bacteria to build up.

Now, I am sure there are many more pros and cons of gel nails, but it is entirely up to you whether or not to try a gel manicure. My personal advice is to go for it, but be sure to care for your real nails and wait 2 weeks in between gel nail application.
