Tips for betting on the MLB

Already fans of both the MLB (Major League Baseball) and of betting on sports are starting to think about future bets on who will win the American and National Leagues, and also the World Series. The best tip that can be given to anyone planning on making such a bet is to find out all you possibly can about the upcoming MLB season- including which teams are the favourites and whether there are any off-field or injury issues that could have an affect. This will be easier for people living in America, due to the far greater coverage of the MLB there, but is essential wherever you live.

It is also a useful tip to wait before placing a bet on the winners of either league or of the World Series, because although the odds can offer you a reasonable guide to which teams are the strongest before the season starts – once it does there are a number of factors that can counteract this. The MLB is inherently unpredictable, just like any other sport, but waiting to see how the teams actually perform once the season has started will at least reduce the risk of getting it completely wrong.

Outfield of Dreams: Fantasy Baseball Outfielders in 2013

When looking at all of the spots on your fantasy baseball roster, outfield is the one position that can deliver stats across the board. In fact, it is very difficult to win your fantasy league without a big contribution from your outfield spots. It’s always a good idea to grab at least one of the top guys at the position and fill in the remaining OF spots with players that can contribute in different ways. Here are some of the top choices:

Ryan Braun (MIL) –

With all due respect to the 2 AL MVP candidates from 2012, Braun should be the first player off the board on draft day. He delivers in all 5 categories and has done so for several years. Even with Prince Fielder’s departure and a PED scandal to deal with, Braun once again delivered a stud fantasy performance last year. Fantasy baseball’s “Top 5” has had some turnover in recent years but Braun has been a consistent presence there. Draft him with confidence.

Matt Kemp (LAD) –

He vowed to take a run at a 50/50 season in 2012 and while the speed declined, before he went down with an injury Kemp was mashing the ball. The Dodgers lineup has gotten better around him and this should allow him to put up some gaudy run production stats. He has progressed well in his offseason injury rehab and should be ready to go for spring training. He wasn’t pleased with losing out on the NL MVP Award in 2011 and will be out to prove himself this season. A monster season wouldn’t surprise.

Mike Trout (LAA) –

Ranked behind Bryce Harper on many prospect lists entering 2012, Trout put up a historic campaign. The only question is if he can repeat. The power was a surprise and it will be interesting to see how the 21-year old responds to AL pitchers making adjustments to him. Atop many ranking lists entering 2013, Trout will no doubt be one of the first picks off the board in most drafts.

Jose Bautista (TOR) –

When he got off to a slow start last year, many people were quick to write him off as a flash-in-the-pan. However, the power was still there with 27 first half home runs (including an amazing 14 in June alone). Also, a freakishly low BABIP last season (.215) helped keep his BA down. His patience at the plate and incredible bat speed alone are indicators that he’ll rebound in 2013. Surrounded by an improved lineup this year, “Joey Bats” should once again put up elite fantasy numbers. Don’t let him slip too far in your rankings.

Carlos Gonzalez (COL) –

Playing half his games at Coors Field has certainly increased his overall fantasy value but “Cargo” can put up some big numbers, to be sure. Staying healthy has always been an issue but so long as he’s in the lineup, he will produce across all 5 categories. A second half swoon cost him even bigger numbers last year (due in part to injury). He doesn’t always get the green light on the base paths but so long as he plays for the Rockies, his inflated home stats will deliver big time fantasy value.

Giancarlo Stanton (MIA) –

One of these years, Stanton is going to mash 50 home runs and no one wants to miss out on that power potential. A diminished line up around him may rob “Mike” of some run production but the potential is simply too big to ignore. The holes in his swing could lead to a lower BA this season and he doesn’t offer any speed but the promise of an NL home run crown make him an enticing pick.

Josh Hamilton (LAA) –

There is lots to like and lots to dislike about the new Angels outfielder. His off –the-field issues are well documented (and always cause for concern). He’s a high risk/high reward player if there ever was one. However, as any fantasy owner that had him in the first half of 2012 wil attest, Hamilton can lead your team to the top of the standings when he’s on his game.

Adam Jones (BAL) –

He got off to a great start last season. In 2013, he’s in his ‘magical’ baseball age of 27 years old and could take things to the next level. He might be held back on the base paths in 2013 due to the team’s conservative base stealing approach. That being said, it just feels like Jones has a monster fantasy season in him and if it is going to happen, 2013 should be the year it does.

Andrew McCutchen (PIT) –

He’s at or near the top of many pre season rankings but there are a few warning signs to consider. His BABIP was very high last season. As a result, he may regress to his previous sub-.300 BA levels. Also, he tends to get caught stealing a bit so that keeps his speed game in check somewhat. Although his power has trended upward, be careful not to over-reach for him on draft day.

Jason Heyward (ATL) –

As talented as they come, his nightmarish 2011 can be attributed to a debilitating shoulder injury. Heyward has legitimate 30/30 potential and if he can correct the holes in his swing, he can also deliver a decent BA to help you out. The Braves lineup has the ability to make some noise in 2013 and Heyward should be right in the middle of things this season. He’s going to break out big time soon and don’t forget that he is only 23 years old. He could anchor your squad for years to come.

There are a lot of options when it comes to filling your fantasy outfield in 2013. Be sure to establish your roster with a stud or two and you’ll be on your way to success.

Podcast Returns February 2013 with Full Slate of Guests from the Fantasy Baseball Community

Barrie, Ontario, January 12, 2012 — The Dear Mr. Fantasy baseball podcast will be returning with a fresh slate of episodes beginning on February 4^th, 2013. The show, which features a full rundown of fantasy baseball players, statistics, news, analysis, tips and insight will return to its weekly schedule after a hiatus during the baseball offseason.

With fantasy sports growing in popularity annually, there is an increasing need for more information on the topic. Fantasy sports now account for approximately $4 billion in annual economic impact across the sports industry.

The Dear Mr. Fantasy podcast began in January 2012 with Chris McBrien hosting the show. A permanent co-host was introduced in May 2012 with the addition of the ‘Fantasy Doctor’, an anonymous baseball injury expert. A partnership with the ‘Fantasy Baseball Crackerjacks’ website was announced in the fall of 2012 to further increase the scope of the weekly program. Just recently, a partnership with Fantasy Judgment was announced which adds a dispute resolution segment to the format.

“It has been a very busy offseason, both in baseball and here at the show”, states Chris McBrien, founder and co-host of the Dear Mr. Fantasy podcast. “We have established several strategic partnerships within the fantasy community and we are prepared to offer our listeners a quality show each and every week”.

In addition to McBrien and the Fantasy Doctor, the program features a rolling guest format. When the show returns on February 4^th, the first guest of the new season will be Eno Sarris, a popular writer for the Fangraphs website. Subsequent guests for 2013 include several very well-known members of the fantasy community such as Tim Heaney (USA Today), Mike Gianella (Roto Think Tank) and renowned baseball author Allen Schatz.

“It’s going to be an amazing 2013 season on the show”, states McBrien. “We are committed to providing our listeners with the very best guests each and every week. We’ve got some big names lined up and we shouldn’t disappoint”.

The podcast will feature positional previews for the first eight shows, then revert to its regular segments for baseball’s regular season schedule.

The Short List: Fantasy Baseball Shortstops for 2013

Shortstop is the weakest position in fantasy baseball today. There are few elite options at the position and the top 4 players all come with a degree of risk. One strategy to take is to simply ‘punt’ the position and take a flier on a late rounder with upside (a strategy I readily recommend). However, if you’re looking for a top player to fill the position on your roster, here are the options:

Troy Tulowitzki (COL) –

Tulo can not only hit for average and put up big run production stats, he also delivers the power. He was over-valued coming into 2012 (ranked as high as 1^st overall on some pre-draft lists). Tulo should probably be the first shortstop off the board but his penchant for injuries makes him a high-risk, high-reward play. Personally, I prefer not to gamble early in the draft. However, a healthy Tulo could give you a real leg up on the rest of your league.

Starlin Castro (CHC) –

He led the NL in hits with 207 in 2011. He contributes in all 5 categories and at 22 years old, still possesses upside. He needs to remain focused (both on the field and off) but there is little not to like with the Cubs shortstop. He missed only 4 games in 2011 and played all 162 last season. Grab him if you can.

Hanley Ramirez (LAD) –

Once a part of the triumvirate of fantasy shortstop studs (along with Reyes and Rollins), Han-Ram still offers some solid numbers across 4 categories. His average and stolen bases are trending in the wrong direction but he will have some pretty good hitters around him in the lineup in 2013. The Dodgers plan to use him at shortstop (instead of third base) in 2013, so that will help keep his fantasy value high. He’s no longer a fantasy stud but he can still deliver some value, to be sure.

Jose Reyes (TOR) –

His batting average returned to a level more consistent with his usual level after winning the NL batting crown in 2011. Also, his stolen base numbers have tailed way off since his heyday. It’s all about staying healthy for Reyes (something he was able to do in 2012). Hitting leadoff atop a rejuvenated Blue jays lineup in Rogers Centre might be just what the doctor ordered in 2013 (even if playing on the turf might not be the best situation). He has the potential to be the top fantasy shortstop in 2013. Or miss extensive time. Tread carefully.

Asdrubal Cabrera (CLE) –

Although his power surge in 2011 may prove to be a bit of a outlier in regard to his career, Cabrera puts up solid (if unspectacular) numbers across all 5 categories. The Tribe has added some interesting pieces to the offense in the off-season and Cabrera will hit in the middle of the lineup. He’s a second tier option at the position but certainly won’t hurt you in any way.

Elvis Andrus (TEX) –

2013 may be the season Andrus reaches the .300 level in his batting average. Still just 24 years old, he has the ability to improve at the dish. Although never one to hit many homers, Andrus did increase his extra base hits in 2012. With Josh Hamilton no longer hitting behind him in the Texas lineup, he should get the green light to run a little more often this season, so a return to the 30+ stolen base level wouldn’t surprise.

Ian Desmond (WAS) –

Although the power was a bit of a surprise, the speed wasn’t and Desmond delivered a really good return for his fantasy owners in 2012. After a poor showing during the first half of 2011, Desmond has turned things around since. He’s at the magical baseball age of 27 (when many players experience a boost in their numbers, if not a career year). If he could only show a little more discipline at the plate, he’d be scary. In the meantime, he remains a good fantasy option at the position.

Jimmy Rollins (PHI) –

As Indiana Jones once said, “It’s not the years, it’s the mileage”. This holds true for Rollins, who profiles as an old 34 years of age. It’s not realistic to expect another season like 2012 but Rollins can still contribute a power/speed combo that plays very well in fantasy, especially in the later rounds. He has the potential to either be a top 5 shortstop in 2013 or could succumb to injuries and miss some time.

Ben Zobrist (TB) –

The major fantasy appeal for ‘Zorilla’ comes from his multiple position eligibility but he has can contribute some solid numbers across 4 categories (and potentially all 5). A mid-round guy who should deliver as expected.

Erick Aybar (LAA) –

Injuries have always been an issue with Aybar. That being said, hitting out of the 2^nd spot of the Angels lineup (behind Mike Trout and ahead of Josh Hamilton and Albert Pujols) can do wonders for one’s fantasy numbers. Now entering his prime and in a good hitting situation, Aybar could steal 30 bases and see a dramatic increase in his runs scored. He also fared much better against lefties last season. He could be a nice value pick in the later rounds.

Just outside the top ten shortstops are names like J.J. Hardy (BAL), Alexei Ramirez (CWS) and Alcides Escobar (KC). All come with varying degrees of risk and limitations. If you choose to wait until the later rounds, there are options available. Don’t panic when it comes to filling the shortstop position on your roster. If you choose to shore up at other positions, it won’t affect your team immensely.

Red Hot Corner: Fantasy Baseball Third Basemen for 2013

What a difference a year makes. Entering the draft at this time last year, Jose Bautista (TOR) was the clear-cut number one choice at third base (and potential top 5 overall pick). Miguel Cabrera (DET) was not yet eligible at the position and Brett Lawrie (TOR) speculation was running rampant. Needless to say, the position has undergone some change. Fast forward a year and Bautista no longer qualifies at the hot corner, Cabrera is the reigning AL MVP (and Triple Crown winner), and Lawrie is coming off a disappointing season.

There are still many options to fill your roster with a productive bat at the hot corner on your fantasy roster. Here are some of the best:

Miguel Cabrera (DET) –

Sure, he tailed off in the post season but his 2012 campaign was one for the ages. Miggy is not only the best player at his position by far, he is a sure-fire top 3 overall fantasy pick.

Adrian Beltre (TEX) –

Hitting in a favorable ball park has done wonders for Beltre’s production. Although nagging injuries have robbed him of some playing time, Beltre continues to put up big numbers that can’t be overlooked. Even with missed time, he should still approach 30 HR, 100 RBI and a .300 average. That is some solid production, to be sure.

Evan Longoria (TB) –

Longo is the engine that drives the Tampa offense. He might not be as ‘injury-prone’ as he initially seems and has the ability to deliver some monster stats for your fantasy team. Although no longer a sure thing in the first 2 rounds, Longoria is coming into his prime and can give some real value in fantasy at the position.

David Wright (NYM) –

Wright has always been an elite producer when healthy. Now armed with a multi-year contract, the skeptical observer could be swayed to think that the Mets’ third baseman will regress. However, the potential for him to contribute in all 5 categories is too big to ignore. Although his average tailed off in the second half of 2012, he still delivered similar power numbers in the second half. Expect a more balanced 2013 season.

Ryan Zimmerman (WAS) –

Still armed with a boatload of potential, Zimmerman could put up big numbers in 2013. One of the best-fielding third basemen in the game, he’s got the potential to be an elite player at the hot corner. Cortisone shots seemed to do the trick for Zimmerman, who struggled in the first half. He ended the season on a tear and could continue to dominate this year.

Pablo Sandoval (SF) –

‘Kung Fu Panda’ proved in the post season that he can be a force to be reckoned with. Still young at 26 years old, Sandoval has some upside. Much like his counterparts at the position, health is a key but he proved in 2009 that he can be a solid fantasy producer. His power has most likely hit a plateau but an increase in his run production in 2013 wouldn’t surprise.

Chase Headley (SD) –

Headley put up an incredible season in 2012. What was even more impressive was the fact that he did not display hugely dramatic splits between his home and road production. A minor league ‘wunderkind’, Headley proved he belonged at the major league level last season. Repeating his season could be difficult, so don’t over-reach, however he could be a solid contributor for several years.

Aramis Ramirez (MIL) –

When he’s healthy, there’s no doubt Ramirez can hit. Although he doesn’t possess any upside at his age, Ramirez has proven over the past 2 seasons that when healthy, he can help drive a team’s offense. It’s a gamble, but A-Ram can deliver.

Brett Lawrie (TOR) –

Over-valued in many drafts entering 2012, Lawrie proved to be injury-prone and inconsistent at times last season. With a rejuvenated Blue Jays team around him, he could prove to be a steal in 2013. He possesses a ton of upside and could thrive this year. He could be the most interesting third basemen in fantasy.

Will Middlebrooks (BOS) –

The Red Sox were so impressed with Middlebrooks that they pushed Kevin Youkilis to the bench (and eventually off the team). He has the potential to hit 30 home runs and put up double digit stolen base numbers. Assuming the broken wrist is healed, Middlebrooks can be a sleeper pick at third base with the upside to be a top 5 fantasy performer at the position.

It’s an injury-prone position by nature but these third basemen have the ability to contribute a healthy amount of stats to your 2013 fantasy baseball roster.

What To Expect Of The MVP And Cy Young Award Winners In 2013

With the year 2012 officially in the rearview mirror, spring training is just around the corner. While there is a lot of pressure on nearly every star player, there is added pressure on the reigning MVP and Cy Young award winners in each league. Here’s a closer look on what to expect from the four players voted as the best of the best in 2012.

Buster Posey

Everyone knew Buster Posey was good, but they did not really know how good until last season’s breakout year. It seems like years ago that he tore up his knee in a collision at home plate. Hitting .336 for the season was a bit of a surprise, and he did not have to sacrifice any of his power to do so. In fact, hitting 24 home runs at AT&T Park is no small feat, nor is 103 RBI. The thing that should be concerning for some fantasy baseball owners though is durability issues. He is only 26 years old, but his catching days already seem to be dwindling. He can’t hide at DH in the National League either for some rest. He is still by far the best fantasy catcher though, and he should go overall within the first 25 picks or so.

Miguel Cabrera

Much like the AL MVP debate, fantasy owners will be trying to decide between Miguel Cabrera and Mike Trout for that #1 overall draft pick (with Ryan Braun also in the mix). Cabrera is still just 29, so regression for a guy who does not rely on speed seems unlikely. Durability is always a bit of a concern, especially since he is playing third base. Fantasy owners care little about defense though, and just want to make sure his bat is still producing. The Tigers are still loaded in the middle of the lineup, so it is realistic that he can keep up his power numbers. His power numbers might dip slightly, but his batting average should still be there. He has not hit below .324 for a season since 2008.

David Price

With James Shields in Kansas City, David Price is without question the ace and leader of Tampa Bay’s staff. He’s a durable, hard-throwing left-hander who has shown quite a bit of consistency since arriving late in 2008. Can he back up his remarkable 2012 campaign though?

Some might look at his subpar 2011 season and worry a little, but taking a look at the numbers does not really show much. He did not have any control issues, he just got hit around a bit. It is realistic to believe that his ERA will not be as low as 2.56 this season, nor will it be as high as 3.49. Winning 20 games might also be a stretch, but 200 strikeouts should be the norm. He’s the top fantasy left-hander in the game, and he should be anywhere from the third to fifth pitcher taken overall. Only Felix Hernandez and Justin Verlander should be drafted before.

R.A. Dickey

The knuckleballer was a great story in 2012, but he is also the least reliable major award winner in 2013. Not only does he always have to rely on a knuckleball to have success, but he is 38 years old and switching teams.

Dickey’s numbers were absurd in 2012, as he went 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA and 230 strikeouts. He does not float his knuckler up there either. Switching leagues can be difficult, but since he is a knuckleballer, it might actually help him. Regardless of his track record, most fantasy owners just can’t seem to fully trust a knuckleballer. In most drafts he should probably be about the 11^th-15^th pitcher taken, but do not be surprised if he goes before that.

Second to None: Fantasy Baseball Second Basemen for 2013

When it comes to depth (or lack thereof) at a position in fantasy baseball, second base ranks right up there in terms of scarcity. It used to be that catchers were the bane of fantasy owners (and they still are a thorn in the side of the Fantasy Doctor). However, second base is a position that has seen a lot of volatility recently and has caused a great deal of pain for fantasy owners. Players that were once considered elite have slipped and there hasn’t really been any players step into the void. It might be slim pickings but here’s a look at some of the top players at second base for the 2013 fantasy baseball season:

Robinson Cano (NYY) –

This is one example where one player stands head and shoulders above his peers at the position. Don’t let that historically poor post-season scare you. Cano delivers the fantasy goods. He’s a legitimate top 5 overall fantasy pick. If you can get him (or keep him) you should hold onto him and instantly give yourself a leg up on your competition.

Ian Kinsler (TEX) –

Last year was the first time in four seasons that Kinsler put up a full season and didn’t go 30/30. His batting average was right where you’d expect it to be (.256) but the big power/speed numbers are what makes Kinsler appealing to fantasy owners. There has been talk of moving him to either first base or the outfield to make room for Jurickson Profar in the middle of the Rangers’ infield. Although losing second base eligibility would ultimately hurt Kinsler’s fantasy value, if he’s healthy, expect a return to the 30/30 level in 2013. That’s enough to make him second on our list.

Jason Kipnis (CLE) –

In the first half of 2012, Kipnis was one of the top second baseman in fantasy. He battled a rough stretch through July and August but it was hardly a surprise as Kipnis was in his first full MLB season. With the Indians adding some bats in the off-season, Kipnis should deliver some fantasy value hitting near the top of the Tribe’s line up. There’s upside here.

Dustin Pedroia (BOS) –

The Red Sox were brutal last year but Pedroia still contributed in all five categories and if he hadn’t missed 20 games, his counting stats would have been even better. An elite option for several years, his stock has slipped a little with some owners recently. Let their loss be your gain.

Brandon Phillips (CIN) –

If you are the type of owner that prefers risk-averse picks, then Phillips is your man. He’s about as steady as they come and although not overly dominant in any one category, he’ll help you across the board. He tends to get bounced around the Reds’ lineup a bit, which will tinker with his RBI totals a bit. Regardless, he’s a safe pick. Bet on more of the usual production.

Ben Zobrist (TB) –

Long a fantasy favorite due to his multiple position eligibility (qualifies at 2B, SS, OF), Zobrist also delivers a nice power/speed mix. Although his runs and RBI were down slightly from 2012, he still put up decent numbers across the board. Inconsistency has been an issue from season-to-season but overall, “Zorilla” should come through with some helpful numbers in 2013.

Neil Walker (PIT) –

A back injury derailed his 2012 campaign but his off-season rehab has gone well and Walker should be expected to contribute nicely in 2013. Entering his prime (and the historically ‘breakout’ baseball age of 27), Walker is poised to take another step this year. Having Andrew McCutchen hitting behind him in the batting order certainly helps his pitch selection. He should be available later in the draft and has definite sleeper value.

Jose Altuve (HOU) –

Sure, he hits leadoff for a team that has struggled to score runs but he put up solid fantasy numbers last year. A contact hitter, Altuve can give you a good average, score some runs and pile up a good number of steals. He’s got a bit of pop in his bat as well. Only 22 years old, he’s got tons of upside.

Howie Kendrick (LAA) –

Okay, the talk about Kendrick as a future batting champion may have been a stretch but don’t overlook his talent. He’ll be batting in a potent lineup that got even better in the off –season. The 18 homeruns he hit in 2011 may be an outlier but expect a return to double digits in 2013. Solid, although unspectacular, Kendrick is in his prime and offers a decent return for a mid-to-late round fantasy second baseman.

Aaron Hill (ARI) –

A risky pick that paid off big time in 2012, Hill will most likely be gone long before he should in 2013 drafts. He’s battled injuries and inconsistency in the past. Although playing in Chase Field helps, Hill did struggle in the past at the hitter-friendly Rogers Centre. Expect the power to remain but don’t be surprised to see a lower batting average next season.

If you miss out on any of these players, there are a few excellent sleeper picks at the position. Rickie Weeks (MIL) was considered by many to be at the top of the position fantasy-wise as recently as two seasons ago. Dan Uggla (ATL) endured a horrible stretch in the second half last season but after the break in 2011, he was one of the best fantasy players in baseball. No doubt the potential to launch 30 home runs would be welcome from a middle infield spot on your roster.

While the pickings may be slim, you’ll be in the same boat as the majority of your competition in hoping to get production out of the second base slot in your lineup. Don’t panic on draft day or at the auction.

Fantasy Baseball Podcast Offers Weekly Dispute Resolution Service

Barrie, Ontario, December 18, 2012 — The Dear Mr. Fantasy baseball podcast has announced the addition of a free weekly dispute resolution service for its audience. Joining with Fantasy Judgment, a professional fantasy league dispute resolution service, the program is offering a weekly segment to settle disputes involving any number of issues.

With fantasy sports growing in popularity annually, there has been an increasing need for a dispute resolution service worldwide. Fantasy sports now account for approximately $4 billion in annual economic impact across the sports industry.

The Dear Mr. Fantasy podcast began in January 2012 with Chris McBrien hosting the show. A permanent co-host was introduced in May 2012 with the addition of the ‘Fantasy Doctor’, an anonymous baseball injury expert. A partnership with the ‘Fantasy Baseball Crackerjacks’ website was announced in the fall of 2012 to further increase the scope of the weekly program.

“We’re thrilled to integrate this new service into the format of the show”, states Chris McBrien, founder and co-host of the Dear Mr. Fantasy podcast. “By teaming up with Fantasy Judgment, we are now offering a chance for more people to get onto the show and get their disputes solved in the process. Fantasy team owners can continue to use the Fantasy Judgment service to solve their disputes for a small fee but if they contact the hosts of the show, they now have a chance to get their dispute addressed on-air and resolved for free.

“I am very pleased that Fantasy Judgment is forming a partnership with the team at Dear Mr. Fantasy”, states Michael Stein, Owner of Fantasy Judgment. “This alliance will help Fantasy Judgment reach a large audience of passionate fantasy baseball players and provide them with a forum to help solve any disputes or issues in their leagues. First Rate: Fantasy Baseball First Basemen Rankings for 2013

When it comes to fantasy baseball draft day, I have tried many different strategies over the years. Many people will tell you that you need a ‘big bopper’ at first base to have a truly balanced line up. Although you can win your league in a number of ways, having a big bat in the first base slot in your line-up really makes a difference.

First base is the one position where defense is almost an afterthought on the field. As a result, most teams have a player slotted in at first that can really handle the bat. It helps on the field and it helps in fantasy. Trust me, you can win without a huge bat at first (and I have done it) but it makes your life a lot easier having a big-time fantasy contributor manning the 1B slot on your roster. Here are some of the best to consider for the 2013 season:

Albert Pujols (LAA) –

Don’t let that miserable start to his Angels career last year sway you. After June 1^st, Prince Albert was up to his old tricks and mashing at the dish around the AL. A player like Pujols comes along once a generation. If you get the chance to own him, do it.

Joey Votto (CIN) –

Sure, he got hurt late in the season last year and it hurt his fantasy value. However, before he went down, Votto was one of the very best fantasy baseball players in the game. He’s in his prime and if you’re looking for an elite hitter with an amazing OBP, Votto is your man.

Prince Fielder (DET) –

Yes, his home runs were down, however he has Victor Martinez returning to the lineup to provide some much-needed protection in the batting order. Also, his team is a contender and offers him a chance to produce some great numbers. His durability makes him a great fantasy asset.

Adrian Gonzalez (LAD) –

Everyone thought that the move from Petco to Fenway would result in monster fantasy numbers from A-Gone. However, a shoulder injury sapped his ability to produce at an elite level. Now back in the comfortable confines of the NL West, expect Gonzalez to continue to put up elite numbers. He’s simply too talented to be ignored.

Mark Teixeira (NYY) –

Raw power, amazing athleticism and the ability to carry a team (both fantasy and on the field). Tex has struggled through some injuries recently but is simply too good to let slide to the later rounds. Grab him and enjoy the production while you can.

Freddie Freeman (ATL) –

Having a big name isn’t always the answer at first base. Having big stats is the best approach. Freeman has raw talent and is growing into the role. Expect big things from his bat, maybe even as early as 2013. He could be a fantasy stud real soon.

Edwin Encarnacion (TOR) –

E-5 finally put up a the numbers that many have expected from him for years now. Injuries and inconsistency have held him back in the past but in a potent line-up with the right opportunity, he could again be a fantasy stud. Don’t count on him long-term but for this year, Encarnacion should again be a source of some solid fantasy stats.

Paul Goldschmidt (ARI) –

Don’t be too enticed by the speed. However, Goldschmidt is in a good situation in the desert. He is primed to put up a monster season and 2013 could very well be time we see it. He swings and misses a lot but could still shine. Definitely worth the gamble.

Ryan Howard (PHI) –

How soon we forget. Howard could come back with a bang. He should be available on the cheap and might just be the sleeper at the position. If you can get grab him late (and you should be able to) he might just surprise with some really big power numbers in 2013. Don’t reach for him but if you can get him in the later rounds, you just might get a surprise.

Adam Laroche (WAS) –

Proving that production doesn’t always have to be flashy, Laroche rewarded his owners with a big year in 2012. Putting together 2 solid halves of a season has always been a struggle for him but riding a huge crest of confidence into 2013 (along with a big contract) might just make him a fantasy asset once again.

Be sure and come away from the draft (or auction) with a solid fantasy contributor at first base. It will help solidify your roster and give you the flexibility you need to fill out your line-up at other positions.

Be sure to keep your eye on other players that qualify at 1B that might just fly under the radar of your fellow fantasy owners. Players like Logan Morrison (MIA), Mark Trumbo (LAA) and Corey Hart (MIL) could be draft day steals. Also, sleeper picks such as Eric Hosmer (KC) and Ike Davis (NYM) might just surprise you with their production. However, nailing down one of the big boys could go a long way to freeing up your options when filling out your roster.

Backstop to the Future: Fantasy Baseball Catchers for 2013

There was a time when catcher was the worst position in fantasy baseball. The approach many owners took was to draft someone in the last rounds (or spend as little auction money as possible), stick him in your line up and pray he didn’t kill your batting average too much.

If you listen to the Fantasy Doctor (something I don’t readily recommend), he’ll have you thinking that catchers are still the worst thing to happen to your fantasy team this side of Adam Dunn in 2011. However, there is actually quite a bit of depth at the position heading into the 2013 season.

Best of all, you don’t have to nab the top player at the position (although it certainly wouldn’t hurt) in order to get value out of the catching position in your fantasy line up. Here’s an early look at the top ten fantasy baseball

catchers for 2013:

Buster Posey (SF) –

Posey would be a fantasy stud regardless of his position. The fact that he’s a catcher makes him even more valuable. Only a horrific injury in 2011 prevented him from being at the top of everyone’s list heading into last year. The fact that he has recovered (and is back with a vengeance), easily puts him at the head of the class.

Carlos Santana (CLE) –

He struggled mightily in the first half of last season. However, this wasn’t totally unexpected given his surprising breakout campaign in 2011. Power, a patient eye and batting in the middle of the order simply makes his talent potential too good to pass up.

Brian McCann (ATL) –

There are going to be a lot of people who will be really down on McCann heading into 2013. They’ll point to his poor production down the stretch last season and say he’s slowing down. A shoulder injury hampered his ability to hit for any type of average in the second half. Although he has been up-and-down during the season for several years now, he continues to put up incredibly consistent numbers. He’ll bounce back nicely. Mark it down.

Victor Martinez (DET) –

The fact that he’s the forgotten man makes him a great sleeper pick in 2013. He’ll immediately be placed into a potent lineup (okay, postseason notwithstanding) and be asked to provide protection for Prince Fielder. Add to that the fact that he’ll get the majority of his at bats from the DH spot and you’ve got the potential for some excellent production from the catcher position in most leagues.

Joe Mauer (MIN) –

Don’t be surprised to see Mauer right behind Posey on many lists. That’s a little too high for my liking. Sure, the average is elite (especially for a catcher) but limited power and the consistent threat of injury make him a little too risky for my blood.

Matt Wieters (BAL) –

People have been waiting for Wieters to put it all together for awhile now. Expect that big season to come in 2013. The key to a monster campaign will be all about hitting for consistent power, something Wieters has struggled with in-season in the past. He’s levelled off the past 2 seasons but expect a jump in Year 5.

Salvador Perez (KC) –

Only an injury out of the gate stopped him from putting up an impressive fantasy season. He could slip down the ranks on a few owners lists due to his limited overall stats last season. If he slips into your hands in the later rounds, jump on the chance to own him. He’ll reward you with a very nice season in 2013.

Yadier Molina (STL) –

I’m going to take some flak for putting him so low, but for me Molina is more valuable on the field than he is in fantasy. He’s coming off a career year, so he’ll be over-valued by most of your competition on draft day. He’s nearing the age that catchers often see a decline in numbers and he has been susceptible to nagging injuries over the years. It wouldn’t shock me to see both his home runs and stolen bases to regress to single digits. He’ll go way earlier than he should at the draft or auction. Don’t sweat it.

Mike Napoli (FA) –

Napoli is coming off a down season but don’t forget that he was atop many lists heading into last year and was a monster in the second half of 2011. Regardless of where he signs, he’ll get a bunch of his at bats out of the DH or 1B spot and he should put up some decent power numbers. Don’t forget about him.

Jesus Montero (SEA) -

The Mariners gave up their best young pitcher to get him and they did it for a good reason. He has a boatload of potential and moving in the fences will help prevent Safeco from being a graveyard for right-handed hitters again. He’ll see time at multiple positions which will only help his fantasy value as a catcher.

If you don’t land one of these catchers in 2013, don’t fret. As I mentioned, the position is deeper than you might think and there are a few sleeper options that should deliver some really nice fantasy stats next season. Players like Jonathan Lucroy (MIL), Miguel Montero (ARI), Wilin Rosario (COL) and Carlos Ruiz (PHI) can all deliver varying degrees of statistical help to your fantasy squad. Even in deeper leagues, you should be able to field a decent catcher in 2013.

Fantasy Baseball Podcast - October 8, 2012

Chris McBrien and the Fantasy Doctor are joined this week by Jason Collette from DRays Bay, Baseball Prospectus, RotoWire and the Towers of Power podcast.

They play a game of “Who’d You Rather?” where they pick between keepers for the 2013 season based on tweets and emails from listeners. They guys then discuss Matt Kemp (LAD) and Miguel Cabrera (DET) in regard to their 2013 draft day fantasy baseball value.

Players who ended the 2012 season on a hot streak are: Norichika Aoki (MIL), Chris Davis (BAL) and Chris Nelson (COL). Players who ended the 2012 season on a cold streak were: Brian McCann (ATL), Eric Hosmer (KC) and Mark Trumbo (LAA). All of the above players are discussed in regard to their expected fantasy value for 2013.

Waiver Wire pitchers for 2013 are: Jarrod Parker (OAK), Kyle Kendrick (PHI) and Marco Estrada (MIL).

Top Fantasy Baseball Keepers for 2013

It’s never too early to start looking at your fantasy baseball keepers for 2013. Once the season is over, many leagues require you to report your keepers as soon as possible. If that is the case in your league, you have no doubt already started to consider who the best of the best are at each position in trying to determine who your keepers will be. Once the season comes to an end, we’ll spend some time putting together lists of Top Ten players, rookies and sleepers at each and every fantasy baseball position.

In the meantime, let’s take a quick look at some of the players that you should be considering as the top keeper at each fantasy baseball position.

Catcher – Buster Posey (SF)

The only thing holding him back from the number one spot coming into this season was the fact that his health was in question as he returned from a serious leg injury. As a rookie in 2010, he found himself batting clean-up for the World Series champs. Yes, he’s THAT good. He would be a great fantasy player regardless of his position but the fact that he has eligibility at one of the most unpredictable roster spots in fantasy makes him the number one keeper at the position.

First Base – Albert Pujols (LAA)

Sure, he got off to a slow start for a second straight year but once he heated up, Prince Albert has turned his season around in dramatic style. With Miguel Cabrera losing position eligibility for next year, Pujols is the class of the position.

Second Base – Robinson Cano (NYY)

He always seems to have his detractors but there isn’t much not to like when it comes to Cano. At a position which has become noticeable lacking in regard to a depth of players able to help in multiple categories, Cano brings you everything you could possibly want except for decent stolen base numbers. The fact that cheap speed is always available off the waiver wire makes Cano a top pick in fantasy, not to mention the cream of the crop at the keystone.

Third Base – Miguel Cabrera (DET)

A move across the diamond has made Cabrera even more valuable, if that was possible. Gaining position eligibility at a much weaker position makes him all the more desirable to fantasy owners in any format. Even with a healthy Jose Bautista available, Cabrera is your man at the hot corner.

Shortstop – Troy Tulowitski (COL)

A wasted season due to injury might take Tulo off some owners’ radar but he still is king of the hill at his position. Entering this season Tulo topped many owners draft wish lists as a potential first overall pick. The injury drops him down from that lofty height but he is still the number one fantasy shortstop in the game.

Outfield – Ryan Braun (MIL)

Matt Kemp may have had a career year in 2011 and was off to a blazing start to the 2012 campaign before being sidelined by injury. Regardless of potential, Braun is the most consistent fantasy performer in the outfield.

Starting Pitcher – Justin Verlander (DET)

Don’t let a few bumps in the road late in the season fool you. Verlander has proven himself as the go-to starting pitcher for fantasy owners. Wins, strikeouts, ERA, WHIP. Verlander is money in the bank.

Relief Pitcher – Craig Kimbrel (ATL)

There’s no doubt that Aroldis Chapman (CIN) has had an amazing season as well at closer but late season shoulder issues and talk of moving him into the Reds starting rotation in 2013 make Kimbrel the top pick for next season.

If you can get one of these keepers on your team for 2013, you should be in a good position to build your roster accordingly. If you can get more than one of these guys, you just might be able to dominate.

What to Do in the Fantasy Baseball Offseason

With the fantasy baseball season winding down, I need to figure out how I’m going to be spending the majority of my time. Not to worry, in addition to parking myself in front of my laptop and playing bingo at partybingo.com (which I do far too often, by the way), I’ll be sure to take some time to start my rankings for next year’s fantasy baseball drafts. Actually, there’s no better time than the present to start looking at keepers for each position as the baseball season winds down. Therefore, as a little teaser, let’s take a quick look at the top keeper at each fantasy baseball position for 2013. The Fantasy Doctor and I will sit down soon enough and come up with a Top Ten for each position, as well as sleepers and rookies of note for each and every fantasy position. Of course, we’ll be getting to this after our end of year wrap up podcast on October 7^th. Also, once we get into the New Year, we’ll start running podcast episodes which will feature position-by-position previews of all the positions including the aforementioned top ten players, rookies and sleepers.

In the meantime, I’m at a bit of a loss.

There was a time when I could supplement my time between baseball seasons by following hockey. However, with the National Hockey League having locked out the players, I won’t be participating in too many hockey pools anytime soon.

Several people have asked me about football. I get questions on Twitter all the time asking for my advice on fantasy football questions. Here’s the thing… it’s not that I don’t like football, I just don’t know it very well. As a result, I am not the person you should be turning to when it comes to seeking out fantasy football advice. I’ll stick to my strengths… baseball and hockey. Well, at least when both sports are up and running.
