First artist to present her stunning fractal compositions is Suzanne Chouinard. Read what the artist herself says about her new works.

Doing fractal art is my way of working with abstract forms. Yes the road to learn that craft has been difficult because I had to struggle to find all the informations necessary to study it. They are not easy to find as there are no books made for teaching how to do this kind of art. All the information available is scattered in bits and pieces on internet and it take hours of work to collect them and learn them. But the shapes and lights it creates are enchanting and always a source of wonder to me when I see them taking life. The greatest part of the work is done by the software I use. I could not imagine them alone.
Now my next goal is to try to reproduce them in painting. That would be a great achievement for me if I achieved this. But there are so many things I try in art that I did not managed yet to work on them. There are not enough hours in a day to do all I would like to do in art.

Suzanne Chouinard

Below you may see some of the works presented in our gallery. To enjoy a full collection, visit our website. We will be grateful to hear your opinion on Suzanne's new works.

Her outstanding works and achievements in professional photography contests are a proof that never is too late to live the life of your dreams. Katarina took up photography 2 years ago. Regarding the fact, how much one must learn to acquire the level of competence enabling to participate in world art contests, it is really great success of Katarina's to receive IPA and PX3 awards.

The article is dealing with basic, yet most important issues for us all creative people. It has been written by Daniela Bowker and to respect Daniela's rights, I publish here only some excerpts of the whole text. The rest you may read on Small Aperture Blog.

Copyright and Licensing Rights

The first thing to get straight is that there’s a difference between copyright and licensing rights. If you take a photo (or compose a song, or write a story… you get the picture) you own the copyright to it. That means you have the right to have that photo attributed to you and you can say how, where, and when you want it reproduced, if at all.

On very rare occasions, you can sign away your copyright to your creation – and in fact I did this quite recently when the copyright of a project that I wrote was attributed to the company for whom I completed the contract, not to me as an individual – but it’s usually in very specific circumstances.

Licensing rights, on the other hand, are what you, as the copyright holder, use to allow people to use your images (or your words or your music &c). If someone wants to publish your photo, you provide them with a licence to do so. There are a plethora of different types of licence out there, which serve different purposes, allow different things, and have different implications for you as a copyright holder. Hence the confusion.

Why you need a licence, part I

You’ve been away on holiday to Mauritius and you have a selection of the most incredible photos showing the places that you visited, the food that you ate, and the sights that you saw. You want to share them with your family, your friends, and to be honest, anyone who wants to take a look because you’re really proud of a few of them. So you sign up to the photo-sharing website SooperPix that’ll let the world at large marvel at your artistic genius ... read more

Licences of Awesome

If SooperPix is actually SooperDooperPix, it’ll use a licence that’s similar to Flickr’s (who recently reconfirmed their users’ rights), or Mobypicture’s, or Focussion’s, or 500px’s, or in fact a lot of other cool photo-sharing places out there. It’ll say that you grant it a licence for the purpose of displaying them on the website. The licence might even specifically state that it won’t sell your images. Here are the examples of the licences from those four websites I mentioned read more

Licences of Evil

However, if SooperPix is just a masquerade for SooperEvilPix that really wants to be able to sell your images and not let you profit from that sale, the licence will read slightly differently. It’ll probably say that you’ve granted SooperEvilPix, and maybe its devil-spawn affiliates and its unwashed friends as well, a licence to reproduce your images. There won’t be a caveat about ‘for the functioning of the site’, ‘the purposes for which you uploaded them’, or explicitly state that it won’t sell on your pictures. TwitPic’s ToS is a great example of this:

You retain all ownership rights to Content uploaded to Twitpic. However, by submitting Content to Twitpic, you hereby grant Twitpic a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the Content in connection with the Service and Twitpic’s (and its successors’ and affiliates’) business, including without limitation for promoting and redistributing part or all of the Service (and derivative works thereof) in any media formats and through any media channels.

Yes, you keep your copyright, but you’ve lost out on your licensing rights. It, and pretty much anyone else it chooses, can sell your image to anyone it likes and take the proceeds from it. You’ll be acknowledged as the copyright holder, but you won’t see a penny for your creativity read more

Why you need a licence, part II

After reading the ToS, you signed up to SooperDooperPix and gave them the licence to show off your photos to the world. Life is great: your memories are there to relive and for your loved-ones to enjoy. Things get even better when WorldsAway Luxury Holidays spots one of your idyllic holiday sunset photos, and wants to use it to headline its campaign encouraging everyone to visit Mauritius. (Aren’t you pleased that you went before the ad campaign?) They contact you and ask if they can use the photo.

You agree to terms that lets them use your photo. What you’ve done is grant them a licence. It’s a different licence to the one you granted to SooperDooperPix. This licence can take lots of different forms (how they can use the image, for how long, those sorts of things) – and you might want to get a lawyer to take a look at it – but what you’re doing here is giving WorldsAway Luxury Holidays permission to use the photo in return for payment. If you didn’t grant them a licence they’d have to look elsewhere for a picture read more

There are plenty of good guys out there who do want you to profit from your own creativity, so you’ll find a site that meets your needs.

If you are using the Rule of Thirds to compose a landscape shot you have to ask yourself this question: Where do I place the horizon line? The arrangement of the elements surrounded the horizon line can be a very relevant if you want to have an image with impact. Take a look of these examples and see how I use the horizon line at the top, middle and low points of the frame and how this provides a more interesting composition.

Picture 1 Wildflowers in Fall by Iris Greenwell

When I see this photo of the wildflowers in a field, I think about texture. My first intention is to show the texture of the field of flowers placing the horizon line in upper side of the screen. This provides me with a visual perspective of the field. The wildflowers are soft and uniform giving me a nice clean and simple composition. The worst place to have the horizon line is in the middle of the frame because this creates an unbalance effect. This cuts the photograph into conflicting halves confusing the viewers. I used Nikon D700, Nikkor 28-80mm lenses and 1/60,F8 and ISO 200.

Picture 2 Cypress Trees in the Mist by Iris Greenwell

The horizon line has been set in the lower part of the frame to emphasize the raising mist from the river and the sizes of the trees.

The mountain on the back of the trees serves as a dark background. This helps the colors of the trees to pop out in its splendor. The side light illuminates the cypress trees for a moment and adding the mystical moment to the scene. I used polarizing filter, tripod and cable release , Nikon D700 and Nikkor 18-200mm lenses @ 36mm. 1//60 sec, F8,ISO200.

Picture 3 Lake Murray by Iris Greenwel

Cypress Trees is not centered and is off to one side, close to the right vertical line of the rule of thirds.

This is more interesting than having the tree placed dead center. The reflection on the lake acts as a mirror and enhances the lines and colors of the image. I left enough foreground to show the beam of light on the dead leaves. When you have an interesting foreground, you can place the horizon line in the upper side of the frame. F16, 0.3 sec, ISO 200, Nikon D700, and Nikkor 18-200mm.

Picture 4 Broken Bow Lake by Iris Greenwell

This photograph, taken at Broken Bow Lake in Oklahoma, reflects the use of higher horizon line and C-shape, which plays well against the trees arrangements. The trees ‘reflection and repetition help us to see a continuative of them. The blue and orange complementary colors make a pleasing contrast in the image. Nikon D200, Nikkor 18-200 mm lens, and 1/30, F11, ISO 200.

Picture 5 Cypress Trees in Fort River by Iris Greenwell

There are times when I look at an area and decide to set the main subject off center using the rule of thirds and placing the horizon line 1/3 of the lower place of the frame. The Cypress trees are on the left side of the frame using the on-screen grid in my camera, I found the exact point where I wanted it. The sidelight intensifies the texture of the trees ‘trunk and the colors. It’s a wheel – you get on, you go to the end, and someone else has the same opportunity to go to the end, and so on, and somebody else takes their place. There’s nothing new under the sun.”

Thus Vivian Maier, a recently discovered photographer of the mid to late twentieth century, expressed a philosophy of modesty that perhaps influenced her to make serious and fine photographs and store them in boxes rather than share them with the world. It was only after her death that John Maloof, a young real estate agent, author and fan of flea markets and estate sales, purchased a box containing thousands of negatives. Maloof recognized the quality of the photography and took on the full-time job of editing and cataloging it.

A selection of Maier’s work is currently on display at the Chicago Cultural Center. Some of those images and other photos can be seen at vivianmaierphotography.com and vivianmaier.blogspot.com

While viewing the Cultural Center exhibit I sensed that I was looking at the work of someone inspired by, and in the company of, such twentieth-century masters as Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, Henri-Cartier-Bresson, and Paul Strand, with just an occasional dash of Diane Arbus.

The images suggest a deep compassion for poor and middle-class people, and especially for children. Youngsters are shown at play, under stress, and engaging the camera (and viewer) with a direct, guileless stare. An aging man is asleep on a beach, stretched out in a position of great vulnerability. Another man, perhaps homeless, sits curled on a sidewalk, his face tucked out of sight. Two young girls stand in a store doorway, one shy and retiring and the other forward and curious.

Maier’s obviously wealthy subjects do not seem to fare as well before her camera. In two photos, rich women glare at the camera with apparent disapproval, perhaps of the photographer, perhaps of everything. In another, a well-dressed man sneers as two men help a man on crutches through a doorway.

In addition to the photos of people, the exhibit has a few scenes featuring architecture in light and shadow. But the overall impression is that the photographer was fascinated by people, and probably loved them – especially the less privileged. But we’re left with the mystery: why didn’t she share her work during her lifetime?

Whoever that person is, getting onto the wheel of life in Vivian Maier’s place, he/she will have some big shoes to fill.

“Photography can be a powerful tool to bring people together, to promote understanding, good will and cooperation” says Chicago photographer Jim Wright, who will have a show of his work, titled “Birds and other holy things” at Spectrum Gallery in Racine, opening January 15. “Photographs can be more than documentation; they can be interpretation and can provide motivation. They not only show a part of reality; they also reveal meaning and purpose.”

Wright has been making photographs professionally since 1973 as a newspaper photographer, commercial freelance photographer and art photographer. He has won many photojournalism awards and was recently given an award of merit for a photo in the winter juried show of Kenosha’s Anderson Arts Center. The show at Spectrum will display works chosen from his entire career.

Racine artist Suellyn Scoon summed up Wright’s first solo show as an art photographer when she stated, “Wright’s photos reveal moments of breath-taking beauty that he has created by going beyond what is observable, into a statement that echoes out to us from the condition of human experience. For example, his photos of a single white bird become an icon for the connection of humanity to a primal source of life. They create hope, and in some of us, faith.”

According to John Mazurek, a local photographer and business manager of Kenosha’s Lemon Street Gallery, “Wright takes the ordinary and makes it look extraordinary. In a day when almost everyone has a digital camera, Jim’s work excels. He can make a bird’s flight have the look of a celestial being, and his studies of ordinary people make them important to the viewer.”

The show will run concurrently with Spectrum’s Winter Invitational show. Both open with a reception at noon-5 pm, Saturday, January 15 and can be seen noon to 5 pm Saturdays and Sundays and by appointment until February 6. The gallery is on the Lake Michigan side of the DeKoven Center, 600 21st Street, Racine.

I strongly believe that when two creative minds meet, the synergy of their potential and energy not only doubles but multiples. Working individually, we resemble a small boat thrown on the vast, stormy ocean. When we unite, we are like a big ship that may move round the world. Listen to this video and learn your lesson. Spread the good news to others.

Their works show different faces of nature. Larry's landscape is full of space. Watching his works, you can see and feel vast streches of space so typical of the United States, even if it is only a bird's portrait. While Marta's focus is on detail and mood. Her landscapes perfectly invisible a modest nature of the Polish countryside.

The scene is from last spring when my husband and I were out driving in southern Illiniois. It began as an overcast day, but quickly, the clouds began to look ominous. I was taking shots of this old house out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by only flatlands when the winds re...ally began to blow hard. I quickly returned to the car and when we turned on the radio to see if there were any storm warinings out, sure enough, we found that we were in the same county that was in the middle of a tornado warning! Thank goodness, it was more in the upper portion of the county, but it sure was scary there for a while. We drove south and eventually ran out of the stormy area.

I had the idea of placing the face of my portrait of Tom McCorkle in the clouds so that it might convey to the viewer the idea that the former occupant's spirits can many times be felt if you are open to it while you explore around or in these old abandoned relics. The memories don't die...they are left there forever.

;0)

Written by Julie Dant

One of the artists who has recently joined the gallery is American photographer Julie Dant. Her magnificient photographies show the artist's great passion for nature and love for people. Julie sees beauty in ordinary things, in every moment of life. She captures the essence of reality, whether it is an old man portrait, old barn or a child's play. Looking at her works, it seems that time stopped. There is some eternal beauty and peace in these photographs. Nobody can pass by her works untouched by true, deep feeling Julie's works evoke.
