We also discussed the process of observing a chapter. Below I’ve included the notes I took from Friday.

1. Read and re-read the chapter

2. Look for key words and key phrases

3. Answer who, what, when, where, and why

4. Look for concluding statements (in order that, therefore)

5. Look for comparisons and contrasts

6. Give the chapter a title and separate the chapter into sections

7. Create lists for key words or thoughts (sin, and list everything the chapter said about sin)

Basic Process of Observing a Book or Chapter

So I totally needed this info this week while trying to tackle observing Romans 3. I had a moment of panic until I found the notes I had taken the day Deb ran through this list quickly in class at the beginning of Part one. I figured I’d post my notes here so you can all check them out if you need to. I’m very sure if Deb were to go through these she’d change half of what I’m writing, but at least its a starting point.
(And of course the reference Deb gets all this from is the book, “How to Study Your Bible” by Kay Arthur. Which is awesome and I’d highly recommend it to anyone who has not read it)

1. Look for Chapter Divisions, natural breaks in the book or chapter and title or sum them up.
2. Identify people or people groups involved.
3. Identify 5 w’s and an H (who, what, when, blah blah)
4. Look for comparisons (ie, Jesus is the Lion of Judah)
5. Look for contrasts (ie, Jesus is the Son of God and the Son of flesh)
6. Identify time elements (After this…, At this time…)
7. Concluding Statements (For that reason…, Because of these things…)

That’s what I had written. I know many of you had taken notes as well and if you have anything you’d like to add, correct, or comment on by all means! Have at it!
