The earlier headline is Modi's Final Assault on India's Press Freedom Has Begun. The dateline of the second article is - India Is Arming Villagers in One of Earth's Most Militarized Places. Both articles have been written by journalists living in India. Those who either work for the New York Times or publish their regular articles there. Since there was a question of freedom of the press and the issue of Kashmir, the answer also came. Information Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur tweeted and wrote.

The New York Times dropped all standards of neutrality long before it published anything about India. The purported New York Times article on press freedom in Kashmir is fictitious. And we do not need to learn the wisdom of democracy from such agenda-driven media. The lies spread by the New York Times regarding the freedom of the press in Kashmir are condemnable. The people of India will not allow those with such a mindset to run their agenda on Indian soil.'

It is clear that Anurag Thakur, the minister working under PM Modi, has given a sharp reply. So in such a situation, it is necessary to know first of all what has been written in the article, due to which such a reaction has come. Anuradha Bhasin, an executive editor of Kashmir Times, wrote in the New York Times,

'The raid on me was a punishment for daring to question the policies of the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. My newspaper, of which I am the executive editor, has been an independent voice in the state of Jammu and Kashmir since it was founded by my father in 1954, which has faced decades of war and military occupation. But Mr Modi is not leaving it. Their repressive policies are destroying Kashmiri journalism, intimidating media outlets to act as government mouthpieces and creating a lack of information in our region of approximately 13 million people.

A paragraph in the New York Times article states,

“The police regularly call journalists and interrogate them. They are threatened with charges like income tax violations or terrorism or separatism. Many prominent journalists have been detained or sentenced to jail. We work under the shadow of fear."

In the next paragraph of this article, it is written,

'Many journalists have self-censored or left journalism. Some have gone abroad fearing arrest. The Government of India has put at least 20 other people on the no-fly list to prevent them from leaving the country.'

This article was written at a time when there is no general discussion about Kashmir. Yes, the programs of G-20 are definitely going on in the country, in which the representatives of other countries have a large share. So there is also the question of timing. But are the things published in the article close to the truth? We will not get trapped in the allegations levelled by the government. We asked Junaid Hashmi, a former journalist with Kashmir Times and currently Managing Editor of The Straightline, to know the truth.

Milk sells at 235 Pakistani Rupees per litre, a kg of chicken costs 700 to 780 Pakistani Rupees, and boneless meat sells at 1000 Pakistani Rupees per kg. Fuel prices are also skyrocketing, with petrol selling at 272 Pakistani Rupees per litre, diesel at 262 Pakistani Rupees per litre, and kerosene at 217 per litre. Moreover, the currency is in a free fall, with the Pakistani rupee hitting an all-time low of 278 against the dollar this week. Unemployment is also a significant concern, with over 1 million Pakistanis projected to lose their jobs, mostly in the textile sector. The unemployment rate has been steadily rising since 2019 and is projected to reach 8.5% in 2023. The GDP growth forecast for 2023 has been trimmed to 4.3%, and the foreign reserves held by the Pakistan Central Bank are critically low at just 3.25 billion dollars. Terrorism is also a significant concern, with terrorists carrying out 58 attacks in Pakistan in February alone, averaging over two per day. The situation in Pakistan is dire, and urgent measures need to be taken to stabilize the economy, create job opportunities, and ensure the safety and security of its citizens.

Pakistan's Forex Reserves are dwindling, and the country has just 3.2 billion dollars left in reserves, which is not nearly enough to meet its debt obligations. To make matters worse, Pakistan is suffering on the foreign direct investment (FDI) front. Usually, countries meet their debt obligations by receiving new investments, but Pakistan's FDI has plummeted 44 per cent during the first seven months of this fiscal year. In the last fiscal year, Pakistan received 1.22 billion dollars in FDI, but in this fiscal year, it has received just 683 million dollars. This means foreign investors are wary of investing in Pakistan, and this situation is unlikely to improve anytime soon.
