Getting paid to travel for most would be a picture perfect world. Taking snap shots not only documents your vacation experience, but can also earn money to cover the costs.

Get paid to travel by selling your photographs. Let’s face it you are going to take photos anyway, right? So, you may as well turn them into some cash flow. But, you will need to focus on the quality of your pictures, determine what the best selling subjects are and what buyers are interested in. No one is going to pay for pictures of you lying on the beach or of Aunt Fanny serving salad.

So let’s take a look into this further.

Marketable Subjects
The most marketable photographs from vacation are those of beach shots. Scenes of beaches scream vacation, book at our resort, they say come escape and relax. Leave plenty of space for designers to add headlines and text. Pay careful attention to framing and allow room for cropping etc.

Magazines are more likely to use landscape photos that illustrate the point of a story than images that merely look good. Buyers will care more about the effect your photos has on their reader than where it was taken. The desired result being that the photo will make the reader interested enough to read their copy and subscribe or buy.

Landmarks and Food
Publishers can use instantly recognizable landmarks to represent a location. Make your shots of famous sites professional quality and you should find there’s an interested market for them. Warning: Some landmarks may be copyrighted for instance publishers can use images of the Eiffel Tower shot in daytime for example, but not when it is lit up at night.

You may be able to get a professional quality shot by pointing your camera at a restaurant table, but street food can be scenic and be of great interest to culinary sites and travel publications.

Capturing the Extraordinary
Again, taking photos of Aunt Fanny serving salad will probably not capture to eye of a buyer. But, a photo of Aunt Fanny water skiing or parasailing will increase the odds. Picture of your subject hiking Everest or bungee jumping also stirs excitement and increases your photos marketability.

Every click of the camera can put cash in your pocket. With a little research I found some sites selling photos starting at $39. Look on the web or in the back of magazines and negotiate a fair price for your photos. You may even think about contacting a couple travel magazines and pitch an offer to them before you head out on your travels. They may not pay you up front, but they may provide you with a list of shots they would be interested in. Turn finding the locations into a game for your family. Who doesn’t like a scavenger hunt?

July 4th is just around the corner. For the photographer amateur or professional, that means another chance to capture spectacular images of fireworks!

How many times have your firework photos turned out to be nothing but a blur? Or, they just never seem to capture the excitement of the moment. Disappointing huh!?!

These photography tips will help you capture the firework images and record them with the emotion and appeal they should have.

1.
Pick your spot- The choice is yours. Go for the unobstructed view or include an interesting or well known landmark in some of your photos to give the viewer a perspective in the shot. When you’re scouting out your spot, be sure to avoid distracting elements such as telephone poles, electric lines, and trees. If possible shoot upwind of the fireworks show. Why? Often the smoke from the display itself builds up, obscuring the firework display. Keep in mind that the first sets of fireworks will have less smoke. On the other hand, firework display programs typically get better as they progress, building to a Grand Finale. You kind of have to go with the flow!
2.
The indispensable tripod- The key to a crisp clean shot is a good, stable tripod. For set up of your camera on a tripod look underneath it. All SLR’s and even some point-and-shoot cameras have a threaded opening on the bottom that permits you to attach the camera securely to a tripod.
3.
Pick your camera lens- What focal length should you use? If you have a zoom lens Use it, so you can quickly change the composition for each shot, without wasting valuable time switching lenses. If your objective is to capture an overall view, then a 28mm to 80mm lens will do nicely. If you’re relatively close and what you’re looking for are full framed close up shots of the fireworks burst, then a telephoto in the 80mm to 200mm range is what you want to be using.

The July 4th, Independence Day Celebration is only a few days away. Many communities around the country are celebrating; showing their patriotism and excitement, by lighting fireworks and firecrackers. Backyards and open fields everywhere will be popping, banging and kaboom’ing all over this great land.

Although it is one of the most anticipated holidays of the year here in the United States, we must keep safety at the forefront. Keep in mind that children should not touch or light fireworks, an adult should always be present and proper extinguishing equipment must be on hand and easily accessible.

Watch this video to see what devastating affect fireworks can have on a family. Even with safety precaution in place lighting of fireworks may be best left up to the professionals.

Key Firework Safety Tips:
1. CHILDREN SHOULD NOT HANDLE FIREWORKS.
NEVER LET CHILDREN HANDLE, PLAY WITH, OR LIGHT ANY FIREWORKS. ONLY ADULTS SHOULD HANDLE AND LIGHT THE FIREWORKS. The fireworks are great family fun, but they burn very hot and are intended to be handled only by adults.

2. DO NOT USE ALCOHOL WITH FIREWORKS.
Please do not consume any alcohol while lighting or handling fireworks. Fireworks must be used only by individuals who act in a responsible manner and who are not under the influence of alcohol or drugs. If you are impaired in any way when you use fireworks, you increase the possibilities of misuse and injury to yourself and others.

3. FOLLOW THE LAWS; USE COMMON SENSE
Follow your local and state laws regarding the possession and use of fireworks, and use good common sense when using fireworks. Read all directions, cautions, labels, and warnings on each individual firework item to understand the product performance and hazards associated with it. If your state has shooters’ sites, use them. Use only those fireworks permitted under the laws of the state and local jurisdiction in which you are using the fireworks.

4. USE FIREWORKS ON A HARD SURFACE.
Always light fireworks on a hard, flat, and level surface to insure the stability of the items. Grass is generally not suitable for any item intended to be used in an upright position. (If lighting fireworks on grass, lay down a flat wooden board for a shooting surface.)

5. USE IN A CLEAR, OPEN AREA.
Always keep the audience (and particularly children) a safe distance away from the shooting site. Always light your fireworks in a clear open area away from buildings, vehicles, and shrubbery. A minimum clear radius of 30 feet for fountains and other ground based items and 100 yards for any aerial product is recommended. You should avoid lighting the fireworks in any area where there is dry grass or brush that could catch fire or near any flammable items. Never use fireworks indoors. Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.

Jobs on a cruise ship are extremely demanding both physically and mentally. You will be expected to perform your duties both while the ship is docked as well as while pitching and rolling. Passengers are there to have fun and you are there to serve and clean up after them.

Although getting paid to travel on a cruise ship is in no way glamorous, it definitely has its rewards. During your off time you will find yourself in fabulous exotic destinations; so be sure to take advantage of it.

Now, not all of us are in a position to quit our regular 9-5 jobs to pack up and sail the seas. But, this could be a good Plan B in the event Plan A goes South.

Kayaking! What a great water activity for any age. Imagine yourself snuggly situated in your water vessel built for one. You will need to rely on your keen sense of balance, agility and upper body strength; and that’s just to get into the apparatus.

One of the great thing about kayaking is trips can take place on the ocean, up rivers, in surf zones, and along white water courses. Another great thing is participants can often have minimal skills and still greatly enjoy themselves.

Imagine yourself maneuvering your sleek boat through rushing rills and rivulets while taking in the spectacular outdoors. Gliding along in the sun, down a green foliage lined river or perhaps a surf zone. Better yet why not try a white water course.

While on vacation many water resorts and destination offer kayaking lessons (some for free) as well as kayak rentals. Kayaking provides a different sight perspective from that of just sitting or strolling on the beach or walking along a woodsy path.

Getting into the kayak
1. Look for a good area to get into your kayak. You will need to find a good spot where to enter the water. Find an area where the water is calm and where there are no rocks and is in shallow water.
2. Place the kayak in the water. Slide your kayak into the water with the bow(The front) first, place your hand firmly on the stern (The back) grab loop and position the kayak so that the cockpit area is in shallow enough water to stand in.
3. Approach the kayak. Have your paddle in one hand and walk along the side of the kayak up to the cockpit.
4. Make sure to secure the kayak before you get in. Start by placing your paddle perpendicular to the boat just behind the seat in the kayak and up against the cockpit rim. Put your closest hand across the kayak and on the paddle with your closest hand on the paddle and your fingers holding onto the cockpit rim., then steady the kayak.
5. Start getting into your kayak. Place your leg into the kayak and into position, shift your weight and butt over the kayak while keeping your other foot on the ground.
6. Go ahead and sit on the kayak. At this point you should still have your hand holding onto the paddle. Grab onto the paddle with your other hand to steady yourself and put your butt back of the kayak and sit down on the back of the cockpit.
7. Bring your other leg into the kayak. Use the paddle to steady yourself with your hands gripping them on either sides of your body, lean back on your butt, and keep your foot on the floor of the kayak. Bring your other leg into the kayak.
8. Slide down into the kayak. Make sure your balance is good and you have both of your feet firmly planted on the floor of your kayak and your hands gripping the paddle, now slide into your kayak.

I’m fixen to embark on Operation Tiger Cruise with my son and the US Navy. My son and his fellow crew are returning from their third deployment in the Persian Gulf.

After the Somalia pirates and other incidences in the Indian Ocean I am going to go get my baby and try to convince him to…Awe shucks you know he is going to do the right thing and serve his country regardless of what momma has to say about it.

I’ll be onboard the USS Milius DDG69 for 7 days and 6 nights. A small unit of the West Pac fleet will set sail from Pearl Harbor Honolulu, Hawaii headed to San Diego, California. Operaton Tiger Cruises are safe for civilians and are performed inside US water territories. There are strict rules and regulation that must be followed. Photo opportunities are limited to specified areas inside the naval base as well as on board the ship for security reasons.

Activities onboard will include immersing myself into the daily ship duties. Duties such as chipping paint and repainting the ship, fire fighter drills, ship tours and duty station lessons. The duties are less intense for the civilians, but it is still invigorating and enlightening. The experience is meant as a learning opportunity to give family and friends an idea of what our sailors endure at sea.

With this being my second Tiger Cruise I will be better prepared than the first voyage. When the Boatswain’s Mate said the destroyer is not a luxury ship he wasn’t kidding. I came home so banged up and bruised one would have thought I had done some actual battling at sea. There is no greater pain (child birth excluded) than crashing ones shin bone into the casing of a deck hatch.

Fortunately, I was housed in the second tier of the woman’s berthing area rather than the third, even still climbing up and over solid steel and iron is no joy in the middle of the night. And, the pitching and rolling of the ship on the waves was of no help.

For this cruise I’ll be bringing reading material. I ordered and received these books the other day. Summer reading should be light and care free, these definitely fit the bill.

I will also be bringing a campsite chair, you know the ones that fold up and slip into a bag for storage. Sitting on missile silo while ripping through the ocean at 20kt plus is not the most comforting or comfortable seating. Also on the list is plenty of sun screen and hair conditioner, because although I am African American I still sun burn and on a ship in the middle of the ocean I crisp up nicely.

Lastly I will be packing meal replacement shakes and snacks. My son said to me “So Mom, do you like the food?” “They’re serving the good stuff for the visitors.” All I could do was sit there with a dumbfounded look on my face and reply “Of course dear it is absolutely delicious!”
