What Falls Away is Elsewhere — after Roethke, Stevens, Yeats In the climate of my heart, I live by the sea’s genius, its sunken coral dream that seals the sand in breakers at the edge of painted toes. I love to swim and take my swimming slow. My body, holy body, feels by thinking where to go, it rides the clouds acquainted with the glassy sun. Light takes my eyes and wakes and washes them among emblazoned white caps, fiery zones. Fish, flesh, fowl fly and peck, seek and scavenge, and know not what we are or what is passing or to come— But I take the morning stroking skies acutest at their singing, swim where I can shimmy through some fragrant portal into all my being’s dance, dying into hues of gold, and deeper still, through summer sounds—the sea is not a mask— what else is there to know? What’s misbegotten dies, what falls away is elsewhere, always dimly-starred on high horizons. Nature has many things to do, gong-tormented like ourselves, and soul-clapped— like our origins.

It was hard to tell if it was morning or afternoon from Anastasia’s view. Out the sliding glass doors, a world of pink-lined clouds and reflecting water. She used to know the time instinctively by the light, where it fell, where it failed to fall, where it shadowed. There was such confusion now, she dreaded appearing foolish, best to be quiet, keep her noise inside, keep anxiety from detonating into livewire energy.
