BrandX Viewing Party

2012-10-17T01:23:00.000-05:00

As a member of Crowdtap, I got to host a party for the season 2 premiere of BrandX on the FX network. BrandX is a weekly evening talk show hosted by Englishman, Russell Brand. Russell's breakout in the U.S came in 2008 with his role in the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He is known for his wild fashion sense, thick accent and unfiltered perspective.

On BrandX, Russell gives his unfiltered refreshing views on pop culture, world politics and current events. What makes this late night talk show different is Brand's interactions with the live audience.

On Oct. 11th, I invited a few friends over for a viewing party of the new season. To get in show mode and learn more about Russell, we watched some clips of the first season of BrandX. We had fun talking about our own views of Russell's topics in the videos. What do you think? Is Mike Tyson a poet or just crazy? Click on the picture below to view the video of Brand's take on Tyson.

Everyone seemed to enjoy the show and giving their own opinions on pop culture and such. We really enjoyed Russell's interview with Ryan Hurst from Sons Of Anarchy (my favorite show). My guests seemed to laugh the most during the last segment of the show. This segment is called 'Community Service' where Russell tries to help an audience member with a problem. I think he's the funniest when really talking with and using the audience members during the show.

There were some mixed views on Brand's comedic style. He is a fast talker with an accent, so you really have to pay attention to catch everything he is saying. I had a good laugh at a couple of my friends doing their Russell Brand impersonations. I wish I would have recorded them.

Check in to BrandX on Get Glue

Every episode of BrandX is audience interactive. You don't have to be a member of the live audience to participate in the show. BrandX Social makes it easy to communicate live on your social networks during the show. You can tweet, post, share, check-in, like and more all from one place. Also get special downloads and clips. It was easy to post some funny tweets from my guests while watching. I particularly liked the one shown below.

Are you a Russell Brand and BrandX fan? Yes or no, please feel free to leave your view in the comments. I love to hear my readers opinions.

A New Version Of Little Red Riding Hood

2012-04-08T01:56:00.001-05:00

Little Red Riding Hood was one of my favorite classic childhood stories. Therefore I was a little surprised when I watched Red, but I did actually like it.

Red is an animated short film, which presents a new version of the classic tale Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault.

This film tells the story only with it's images and sound. I found the film to be quite fascinating and interesting. I did not really know what to think at first when viewing certain parts. I think it's a very well done version, whether you like the interpretation or not.

Take just a few minutes and watch Red. I would love to hear others opinions of the film, so please feel free to leave your comments.

Death Of A Ghost Hunter

2012-02-09T09:34:00.000-06:00

You can watch full length movies on YouTube. Lionsgate has several full feature films on their channel. These aren't your theater blockbusters, but still worthy of watching. I watched Death Of A Ghost Hunter (2007) and found it pretty interesting.

Renowned "ghost hunter", Carter Simms is paid to conduct a paranormal investigation of a supposedly haunted house. Along with a camera man, a reporter, and a spiritual advocate, she embarks on a three night journey into terror.

Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

American Idol In Aspen

2012-01-25T23:50:00.000-06:00

Tonight's episode of American Idol held auditions in Aspen. Though cold in Aspen, there were a few contestants auditions sure to warm you right up. There were a couple of shockers, a tearjerker and what the hell were you thinking. Out of all the Aspen contestants, the following four were the ones that stood out for me. There was some really great talent this evening.

Haley Smith - Country girl working three jobs. Haley's got a very natural feel and some soul. She's not afraid to show her own style in the music. She comes off very comfortable when singing and she's just for real.

Richie Law - When I heard the voice that came out of that boy, I was initially dumbfounded. If you just hear him sing, you would be expecting someone along the lines of Trace Adkins to be standing in front of you. I am interested how far he can take that voice beyond country music and in other genres. A voice like that is a gift, not just a talent.

Shelby Tweten - The tearjerker tonight was Shelby's story and voice. She has been diagnosed with bipoloar disorder and has suffered from depression. Her focus on singing and the journey to Idol have helped to keep her on track and taking her meds. Her story alone could bring tears to your eyes. Then she began to sing, and you couldn't help but feel the emotion of every note. Shelby has a beautiful voice and cute look to take her all the way to the finals.

Angie Ziederman - This audition was the 2nd shocker audition for me tonight. (Richie's being the other shocker) I wasn't quite sure what to expect when Angie came out with her quirky style. She started to sing Blue Moon and my first thought was, "2012 American Idol winner of the William Hung Award". Somehow she got to sing a second song. I couldn't believe it was the same girl. I was in awe as I believe many others were also. Angie really does have an amazing voice and fun personality that could take her far in this contest.

What did you think of tonight's episode and who were your Aspen picks? Could be a great season with the talent I have been seeing. As Ryan Seacrest says, "See you next time on American Idol!"

Being Human

2012-01-10T23:26:00.000-06:00

I have become a huge fan of the series Being Human on the SyFy network. I watched every episode of the first season and season 2 will be starting Jan. 16, 2012. It's a little different than your usual show featuring supernatural characters. The story is set around three main characters, all of which are inhuman, who live in a house together. These three 20 something roomies try to help each other maintain and keep their double lives a secret from the outside world. Though they are all inhuman, they want to try to keep some piece of humanity in their lives however small it might be.

A show with a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost is defintely off to a great beginning. The first season got me hooked and I am anxiously awaiting season 2 to see in what direction they take these characters. They are constantly threatened with exposure or persecution, pressure from other supernatural creatures, and with problems caused by their attempts to deal with their own natures.

Vampire - Aidan played by Sam Witwer (Smallville & Battlestar Gallatica)
Werewolf - Josh played by Sam Huntington (Cavemen & Superman Returns)
Ghost - Sally played by Meaghan Rath (The Assistants)

Now I am ashamed to admit it, but it wasn't until recently that I became aware that this show is a re-imagining of the acclaimed BBC original series Being Human. There are actually quite a few US shows that we have adopted from the BBC, but that's another post altogether.

Anyway when I learned this, I went to my Sidereel acount and added it to my tracker so I could check it out. I have finished the first season of the UK version and enjoyed it even more than the US version. The plot and characters are basically the same, but I believe they dig deeper into each characters personal issues and situations. Last I heard, there will be a season 4 in 2012 with returning characters and also new ones.

Vampire - Mitchell played by Aidan Turner ( Hmmm and the Vampire's name in US version is Aidan...coincidence?)
Werewolf - George played by Russell Tovey
Ghost - Annie played by Lenora Crichlow

Saturday Night Live Tribute

2011-12-07T15:00:00.000-06:00

I have been a fan of Saturday Night Live ever since I can remember. It has been a Saturday night staple in many households. I still look up who's hosting and who the musical guest will be every week.
The show premiered on NBC on October 11, 1975 and has won several awards, including 21 Primetime Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and three Writers Guild of America Awards. In 2000, it was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Many actors and comedians started their careers on SNL and have become very famous. Many movies have also come from SNL skits.

Blues Brothers - John Belushi & Dan Akroyd (1980)
Wayne's World - Dana Carvey & Mike Myers (1993)
Coneheads - Jane Curtin & Dan Akroyd (1993)
Wayne's World 2 - Mike Myers & Dana Carvey (1993)
It's Pat: The Movie - Julia Sweeney (1994)
Stuart Saves His Family - Al Franken (1995)
Blues Brothers 2000 - Dan Akroyd & John Goodman (1998)
A Night At The Roxbury - Chris Kattan & Will Farrell (1998)
Superstar - Molly Shannon (1999)
The Ladies' Man - Tim Meadows (2000)
MacGruber - Will Forte (2010)

Here's some other interesting facts about the SNL cast:

Youngest cast member - Anthony Michael Hall 17 years old 1985–1986
Oldest cast member - Michael McKean 46 years old 1994–1995
Longest tenure - Darrell Hammond 14 yrs.
Shortest tenure - Laurie Metcalf 1 season

So for my SNL tribute, here are some of my favorite skits. This post would go on forever if I posted all my favs, so here are just a few.

Eddie Murphy - Buckwheat

Belushi - Samarai

Adam Samberg & Justin Timberlake - Dick In A Box

Fireman Bill - Jim Carrey

Chip N Dale - Chris Farley & Patrick Swayze

Sarah Palin - Tina Fey

What are your favorite SNL moments? Please comment and share any of your favorite hosts, musical guests, cast members or skits. I would love to hear what others have liked or not liked for that matter. Enjoy and see you Saturday Night:)

Thanksgiving In Movies And Television

2011-11-23T20:45:00.001-06:00

First of all, I would like to wish everyone a very HAPPY THANKSGIVING. Since moving to Texas several years ago, my family and I celebrate by taking Thanksgiving to the beach. We pack up the turkey and all the fixings and load up the truck and go to the beach. It has become a new family tradition.
Thanksgiving has also been celebrated on television and in movies. Here are just a few of them.

Home For The Holidays - Starring Holly Hunter, Robert Downey Jr., Steve Guttenberg and Claire Danes just to name a few. The family all comes home for the holiday and then the fun begins.

Plains, Trains And Automobiles - Starring Steve Martin and John Candy. Follow these two on a whirlwind adventure as they try to get home in time for the holidays.

Blind Side - Starring Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw and Kathy Bates. Based on the true story of the Tuohy family and football star Michael Oher

The Walton Thanksgiving Reunion - 1993 TV movie

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving

Garfield's Thanksgiving

There are, of course, many more on the list. So please comment with your favorite Thanksgiving shows, movies or scenes. Enjoy the clips below and have a great Thanksgiving. Be safe and eat a lot.

A Classic Sci-fi Drama

2011-11-22T02:23:00.001-06:00

If you enjoy Science Fiction at all, then you know that Close Encounters Of The Third Kind is a must see classic. When I saw the full movie on YouTube, I just felt I needed to post this classic.

Story: Roy Neary sets out to investigate a power outage when his truck stalls and he is bathed in light from above. After this, strange visions and five musical notes keep running through his mind. Will he find the meaning of the visions, and who - or what - placed them in his mind?

Written and Directed by Steven Spielberg
Starring Richard Dreyfuss and Teri Garr as Roy and Ronnie Neary

The movie is actually quite visually impressive for being made in 1977. The gripping sound effects earned the movie a special achievement Oscar.

Even though this is a loved classic, there were a lot flaws in the movie. While you are watching, see if you can pick some out. Please leave a comment, if you find one.

Now go get a drink and some popcorn and enjoy.

SCARY DOLLS OF HORROR MOVIES

2011-10-28T01:11:00.000-05:00

{EAV_BLOG_VER:81d948498b246c79}I have been watching a lot of older horror movies on AMC's Fear Fest. Today I saw Dead Silence, which is based on the story and poem of Mary Shaw. In the movie the poem goes, "Beware the stare of Mary Shaw. She had no children only dolls. And if you see her in your dreams, do not ever, ever scream."

During one of the big scenes in the movie, in the room with all 101 dolls, you can see Jigsaw's doll from the Saw films sitting on the floor, and Edgar Bergen's doll Charlie McCarthy on one of the shelves. The doll that Detective Lipton (played by Donnie Wahlberg) throws over his shoulder in this scene is a replica of ventriloquist Jimmy Nelson's doll, Danny O'Day.

So after seeing this movie, I started thinking of other horror movies starring scary dolls. The following is a top five list off the top of my head and in no particular order.

Dead Silence
Mary Shaw Dolls

Saw
The face of the Jigsaw killer, tricycle-riding Billy, the white-faced ventriloquist dummy

Childs' Play
Chucky, the doll with the soul of a serial killer

Puppetmaster
Live Evil Dolls created by the puppetmaster that go on a bloodthirsty rampage

Poltergeist
the Creepy Clown that drags the boy under the bed. That part still scares me and no clown dolls for me after that.

Check out some frightening doll pictures to get you in the Halloween movie mood.

Do you have any other favorites? Leave a comment with your scary doll list.

Big Hit or Big Flop

2011-10-16T17:57:00.000-05:00

This week at the box office I was surprised by some of the numbers. Footloose was highly anticipated, but not without some controversy. Even with all the remake haters and such it has done over 16 million. Though Footloose was not #1, it was not a bomb like some might have wished. I am just going to have to see it now to make my own opinion. I have been kind of in the middle about the whole remake and no Kevin Bacon debates. So, I'll let you know if I thought it was the good, bad, or ugly.

The popular Dolphin Tale and Moneyball are still bringing in some nice cash at #5 and #6. Last, but not least, is The Lion King at #10. All ages can enjoy this Disney hit, so it's still hanging in there.

Even though not on this list, The Smurfs' box office numbers were a surprise to me. The Smurfs crossed $400 million overseas to up its global take to $542 million, or, slightly more than Empire Strikes Back. Come on really, The Smurfs???

Here is the latest list.

Real Steel, $16.3 million
Footloose, $16.1 million
The Thing, $8.7 million
The Ides of March, $7.5 million
Dolphin Tale, $6.3 million
Moneyball, $5.5 million
50/50, $4.3 million
Courageous, $3.4 million
The Big Year, $3.3 million
The Lion King, $2.7 million

So, what do you think? Have you seen any of these top 10 movies?
