The Maya calendar uses three different dating systems in parallel, the Long Count, the Tzolkin (divine calendar), and theHaab (civil calendar). Of these, only the Haab has a direct relationship to the length of the year.

A typical Mayan date looks like this: 12.18.16.2.6, 3 Cimi 4 Zotz.

12.18.16.2.6 is the Long Count date.

3 Cimi is the Tzolkin date.

4 Zotz is the Haab date.

What is the Long Count?

The Long Count is really a mixed base-20/base-18 representation of a number, representing the number of days since the start of the Mayan era. It is thus akin to the Julian Day Number.

The basic unit is the kin (day), which is the last component of the Long Count. Going from right to left the remaining components are:

uinal (1 uinal = 20 kin = 20 days)

tun (1 tun = 18 uinal = 360 days = approx. 1 year)

katun (1 katun = 20 tun = 7,200 days = approx. 20 years)

baktun (1 baktun = 20 katun = 144,000 days = approx. 394 years)

The kin, tun, and katun are numbered from 0 to 19.

The uinal are numbered from 0 to 17.

The baktun are numbered from 1 to 13.

Although they are not part of the Long Count, the Mayas had names for larger time spans. The following names are sometimes quoted, although they are not ancient Maya terms:

1 pictun = 20 baktun = 2,880,000 days = approx. 7885 years

1 calabtun = 20 pictun = 57,600,000 days = approx. 158,000 years

1 kinchiltun = 20 calabtun = 1,152,000,000 days = approx. 3 million years

1 alautun = 20 kinchiltun = 23,040,000,000 days = approx. 63 million years

The alautun is probably the longest named period in any calendar.

When did the Long Count Start?

Logically, the first date in the Long Count should be 0.0.0.0.0, but as the baktun (the first component) are numbered from 1 to 13 rather than 0 to 12, this first date is actually written 13.0.0.0.0.

The authorities disagree on what 13.0.0.0.0 corresponds to in our calendar. I have come across three possible equivalences:

13.0.0.0.0 = 8 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 13 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)

13.0.0.0.0 = 6 Sep 3114 BC (Julian) = 11 Aug 3114 BC (Gregorian)

13.0.0.0.0 = 11 Nov 3374 BC (Julian) = 15 Oct 3374 BC (Gregorian)

Assuming one of the first two equivalences, the Long Count will again reach 13.0.0.0.0 on 21 or 23 December AD 2012 - a not too distant future.

The date 13.0.0.0.0 may have been the Mayas’ idea of the date of the creation of the world.

What is the Tzolkin?

The Tzolkin date is a combination of two "week" lengths.

While our calendar uses a single week of seven days, the Mayan calendar used two different lengths of week:

a numbered week of 13 days, in which the days were numbered from 1 to 13
a named week of 20 days, in which the names of the days were:

5. Chicchan	6. Cimi	7. Manik	8. Lamat	9. Muluc
10. Oc	11. Chuen	12. Eb	13. Ben	14. Ix

As the named week is 20 days and the smallest Long Count digit is 20 days, there is synchrony between the two; if, for example, the last digit of today’s Long Count is 0, today must be Ahau; if it is 6, it must be Cimi. Since the numbered and the named week were both "weeks," each of their name/number change daily; therefore, the day after 3 Cimi is not 4 Cimi, but 4 Manik, and the day after that, 5 Lamat. The next time Cimi rolls around, 20 days later, it will be 10 Cimi instead of 3 Cimi. The next 3 Cimi will not occur until 260 (or 13 x 20) days have passed. This 260-day cycle also had good-luck or bad-luck associations connected with each day, and for this reason, it became known as the "divinatory year."

The "years" of the Tzolkin calendar are not counted.

When did the Tzolkin Start?

Long Count 13.0.0.0.0 corresponds to 4 Ahau. The authorities agree on this.

What is the Haab?

The Haab was the civil calendar of the Mayas. It consisted of 18 "months" of 20 days each, followed by 5 extra days, known asUayeb. This gives a year length of 365 days.

The names of the month were:

In contrast to the Tzolkin dates, the Haab month names changed every 20 days instead of daily; so the day after 4 Zotz would be 5 Zotz, followed by 6 Zotz ... up to 19 Zotz, which is followed by 0 Tzec.

The days of the month were numbered from 0 to 19. This use of a 0th day of the month in a civil calendar is unique to the Maya system; it is believed that the Mayas discovered the number zero, and the uses to which it could be put, centuries before it was discovered in Europe or Asia.

The Uayeb days acquired a very derogatory reputation for bad luck; known as "days without names" or "days without souls," and were observed as days of prayer and mourning. Fires were extinguished and the population refrained from eating hot food. Anyone born on those days was "doomed to a miserable life."

The years of the Haab calendar are not counted.

The length of the Tzolkin year was 260 days and the length of the Haab year was 365 days. The smallest number that can be divided evenly by 260 and 365 is 18,980, or 365×52; this was known as the Calendar Round. If a day is, for example, "4 Ahau 8 Cumku," the next day falling on "4 Ahau 8 Cumku" would be 18,980 days or about 52 years later. Among the Aztec, the end of a Calendar Round was a time of public panic as it was thought the world might be coming to an end. When the Pleaides crossed the horizon on 4 Ahau 8 Cumku, they knew the world had been granted another 52-year extension.

When did the Haab Start?

Long Count 13.0.0.0.0 corresponds to 8 Cumku. The authorities agree on this.

Did the Mayas Think a Year Was 365 Days?

Although there were only 365 days in the Haab year, the Mayas were aware that a year is slightly longer than 365 days, and in fact, many of the month-names are associated with the seasons; Yaxkin, for example, means "new or strong sun" and, at the beginning of the Long Count, 1 Yaxkin was the day after the winter solstice, when the sun starts to shine for a longer period of time and higher in the sky. When the Long Count was put into motion, it was started at 7.13.0.0.0, and 0 Yaxkin corresponded with Midwinter Day, as it did at 13.0.0.0.0 back in 3114 B.C.E. The available evidence indicates that the Mayas estimated that a 365-day year precessed through all the seasons twice in 7.13.0.0.0 or 1,101,600 days.

We can therefore derive a value for the Mayan estimate of the year by dividing 1,101,600 by 365, subtracting 2, and taking that number and dividing 1,101,600 by the result, which gives us an answer of 365.242036 days, which is slightly more accurate than the 365.2425 days of the Gregorian calendar.

(This apparent accuracy could, however, be a simple coincidence. The Mayas estimated that a 365-day year precessed through all the seasons twice in 7.13.0.0.0 days. These numbers are only accurate to 2-3 digits. Suppose the 7.13.0.0.0 days had corresponded to 2.001 cycles rather than 2 cycles of the 365-day year, would the Mayas have noticed?)

In ancient times, the Mayans had a tradition of a 360-day year. But by the 4th century B.C.E. they took a different approach than either Europeans or Asians. They maintained three different calendars at the same time. In one of them, they divided a 365-day year into eighteen 20-day months followed by a five-day period that was part of no month. The five-day period was considered to be unlucky.

Mayan Calendar 2012

Much of what was discussed revolves around a time period, not a specific date. The time period is the 6 month period between the Spring and Fall equinoxes. After that period comes the Winter Solstice on December 21 2012. The Maya had numerous calendars with which they tracked the movements of the planets (Venus, Mars, Saturn and Jupiter) and the rotation of the Earth around the Sun. Two of these Mayan calendars are those which draw our attention to 12/21/2012. The Maya Tzolkin Calendar and the Maya Long Count Calendar both contain references many today believe point to the year 2012. The sacred Tzolkin calendar represents a 260 day period that uses 20 days rotating in conjunction with 13 tones which create the foundation of the calendar. The day 4 Ahua (aka: Ajaw - the day name can vary depending on which Mayan dialect is used) is a special day as it is always on this day during which the Baktun periods begin (the 5,124 year periods). Baktun periods however are represented in the Long Count Calendar. Baktuns are the fifth placemark in the Long Count and the upcoming date in 2012 marks the movement from 12 (12.19.19.17.19) to 13 (13.0.0.0.0). Tortuguero is a Maya ruin site in southern Mexico that contains a stone carving (Monument 6) with the Dec. 21, 2012 date represented in the Tzolkin calendar. The carving references 4 Ahua (the beginning date within the Tzolkin and Long Count calendars) and the remaining visible glyphs are interpreted as referecing an event occuring on the beginning date upon which the diety will descend. “The Thirteenth ‘Bak’tun” will be finished (on) Four Ajaw, the Third of Uniiw (K’ank’in). ? will occur. (It will be) the descent(??) of the Nine Support? God(s) to the ?.” This decypherment of the glyphs and the Tortuguero prophecy is discussed on the UT Mesoamerican Discussion Board. Foresaw the Stock Market Crash and Great Depression
In 1924, Cayce predicted the crash of the market after a long bull run during the late 1920's. During the mid-1920's he chronicled the rise and fall of the stock market, teaching his clients how to play the bull market and how to prepare for the crash of 1929. He even outlined what growth industries would give them the best long term portfolio after the market reached bottom. Cayce should have been quite well-to-do with endowment from a share of their speculations, but his clients did not pay attention to the readings and failed to pay heed to his warning. Six months later, they lost all they had when the great October 1929 Stock Market Crash occurred. This was also the trigger for the Great Depression which Cayce also foresaw. In 1931, Cayce foresaw that the Great Depression would lift in the spring of 1933 which it did.

Foresaw revolutions in foreign lands
In March 1935, Cayce added that eventually, unless there is more of the spiritual attitude raised in groups here and there, world conditions would terminate in a revolution throughout many of the foreign nations. There was nothing in 1935 which caused much unrest. But in 1936, the Spanish Civil War broke out, Italy invaded Ethiopia, Japan invaded China, and Stalin elevated the Great Purges to star billing throughout Russia.

Foresaw the rise and fall of Adolf Hitler
In January 1934, Cayce predicted that Hitler would rise in power to reign over Germany. In August 1935, Cayce predicted that Hitler would remain in power until it will "come as an overthrow or an outside war."

Foresaw a world war that would begin in 1936
Cayce gave one of his greatest world prophecies in February 1932. He sweepingly outlined the course of most of the decade of the 1930's, which centered around:

"A great catastrophe that's coming to the world in ' 36, in the form of the breaking up of many powers that now exist as factors in the world affairs."
Cayce predicted the acceptance or rejection of the League of Nations in 1936, after which changes would come which would create different maps of the world. He detailed that before 1936 arrived the powers in Russia, United States, Japan and England, or United Kingdom would be "broken up", as indeed they were with major changes in the governments and policies of each nation.

Cayce began 1935 with predictions about a revolution throughout many of the foreign nations and finished up 1935 with his first grim predictions about a universal war which he described as the whole world on fire. He predicted that international patterns would spiral out of control after 1936, resulting in new national boundaries. By 1937 he foresaw both the beginning and the end of World War II. Cayce's readings continued to provide highly accurate predictions about the escalation of the whole world on fire, the U.S. entry into the effort to fight it, the establishment of peace, and the return to normalcy within the new world order. Early on he twice gave a highly accurate time frame for the ending of the war. Before the war even began, Cayce was describing the nature of the post-war era.

Foresaw America's 1941 entry into the war
America's entry into the war was revealed through a reading in July 1939 for a retired naval commander, which also contained a message of hope:

Question: "Am I likely to be recalled to active service within two or three years?"

Answer: "The only likelihood will be in 41. This, too, if the people pray, and live as they pray, will pass."

Cayce ominously called the American Destiny, hinting about U.S. involvement in the great fire: America must remain:

"As it were - the balance of power in not only the money forces of the world but those influences that will later be for the manning of those powers where greater destructive forces will arise in those portions of the world..."

He laid out the worldwide scope of the conflict:

"Disturbance in Asia, that will be effective or active through the changes in Germany, Italy and especially through the Balkan forces or Balkan States, will produce a disturbance that may reach proportions that will become rather terrifying to all of Europe and Asia."

Foresaw a decisive World War II battle
On June 20, 1943, Cayce described a battle that would happen and determine the outcome and length of the world war.

Five days after making this prediction, the German and Russian armies clashed in the greatest tank battle of all time.

Foresaw the deaths of Presidents FDR and JFK

In 1939, Cayce predicted the deaths of two presidents in office:

"You are to have turmoil -- you are to have strife between capital and labor. You are to have a division in your own land, before you have the second of the Presidents that next will not live through his office ... a mob rule!"

President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in office in April 1945. In November 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, when racial tensions in the United States were boiling.

"Unless there is more give and take," Cayce said, "consideration for those who produce, with better division of the excess profits from labor, there must be greater turmoil in the land."

Kennedy was killed during the beginning of the Civil Rights Movement. Great civil and racial unrest followed just as Cayce foresaw.

Foresaw India's independent from Britain
Cayce predicted that India would become independent from Britain.
This prophecy was fulfilled in 1947 when India began a transition to a democratic republic after independence from Britain.

Foresaw the collapse of Soviet Union and communism

Cayce predicted the failure of communism and the collapse of the Soviet Union:

"[Through Russia], comes the hope of the world. Not in respect to what is sometimes termed Communism or Bolshevism -- no! But freedom -- freedom! That each man will live for his fellow man. The principle has been born there. It will take years for it to be crystallized; yet out of Russia comes again the hope of the world."

Cayce's words, despite all disbelief, were fulfilled in 1991 when the Soviet Union dissolved as a nation, abandoned communism, and instituted economic and political freedom.

Foresaw the alliance of Russia and US

Cayce foresaw that Russia would one day become America's ally. Russia, he said, would be guided by friendship with the United States. The Soviet Union's attempt to rule "not only the economic, but the mental and spiritual life" of its people was doomed to failure.

"..for changes are coming, this may be sure -- an evolution or revolution in the ideas of religious thought. The basis of it for the world will eventually come out of Russia. Not communism, no! But rather that which is the basis of the same as the Christ taught -- his kind of communism."

Cayce's vision came true after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Foresaw the union of the radio and telegraph industry

Cayce foresaw the rapid integration and expansion of the communication industry which would be driven by the new technology. In October 1935 he predicted that by '39 should be a fact - that is, the united activity of Radio and the Telegraph lines. By the end of the 1930's the ITU had created the technical standards which allowed all forms of communication to inter-operate. In November 1942 he added:

"Thus, all communications are a part of this activity. This means not only radio and telegraph (for these must be eventually one) ... but more and more the air as the greater means of communications. With more and more satellite communication facilities coming on line, even in the 1990's, it is more and more the air."

Edgar Cayce's Biography

Edgar Cayce (March 18, 1877 - January 3, 1945) was an American who claimed to be a psychic with the ability to channel answers to questions on various topics while in a self-induced trance. Though Cayce considered himself a devout Christian who lived before the emergence of the New Age Movement, his work and timeline lead many to believe he was its founder and influenced its teachings.

1877 to 1920: Kentucky period

In December 1893, the Cayce family moved to Hopkinsville, Kentucky and occupied 705 West Seventh, on the south-east corner of Seventh and Young Street. During this time, Cayce received an eighth-grade education; discovered his spiritual vocation;[4] left the family farm to pursue various forms of employment (at Richard's Dry Goods Store and then in Hopper's Bookstore, both located on Main Street).
Cayce's education stopped with the ninth grade because his family could not afford the costs involved.[3] A ninth-grade education was often considered more than sufficient for working-class children. Much of the remainder of Cayce's younger years would be characterized by a search for both employment and money.
Throughout his life, Cayce was drawn to church as a member of the Disciples of Christ. He read the Bible once for every year of his life, taught at Sunday school, and recruited missionaries. He is said to have agonized over the issue of whether his supposed psychic abilities-and the teachings which resulted were spiritually legitimate.

In 1900, he formed a business partnership with his father to sell Woodmen of the World Insurance but was struck by severe laryngitis in March that resulted in a complete loss of speech. Unable to work, he lived at home with his parents for almost a year. He then decided to take up the trade of photography, an occupation that would exert less strain on his voice. He began an apprenticeship at the photography studio of W.R. Bowles in Hopkinsville.
A traveling stage hypnotist and entertainer called "Hart- The Laugh Man" was performing at the Hopkinsville Opera House in 1901. He heard about Cayce's condition and offered to attempt a cure. Cayce accepted, and the experiment took place on stage in front of an audience. Remarkably, Cayce's voice apparently returned while in a hypnotic trance but allegedly disappeared on awakening. Hart tried a posthypnotic suggestion that the voice would continue to function after the trance, but this proved unsuccessful.
Since Hart had appointments at other cities, he could not continue his hypnotic treatment of Cayce. However, a local hypnotist, Al Layne, offered to help Cayce in restoring his voice. Layne suggested that Cayce describe the nature of his condition and cure while in a hypnotic trance. Cayce described his own ailment from a first person plural point of view ("we") instead of the singular ("I")
In subsequent readings he would generally start off with "We have the body." According to the reading, his voice loss was due to psychological paralysis and could be corrected by increasing the blood flow to the voice box. Layne suggested that the blood flow be increased, and Cayce's face supposedly became flushed with blood and his chest area and the throat turned bright red.
After 20 minutes Cayce, still in trance, declared the treatment over. On awakening, his voice was alleged to have remained normal. Relapses were said to have occurred but were said to have been corrected by Layne in the same way, and eventually the cure was said to be permanent.
Layne had read of similar hypnotic cures effected by the Marquis de Puyegur, a follower of Franz Mesmer, and was keen to explore the limits of the healing knowledge of the trance voice. He asked Cayce to describe Layne's own ailments and suggest cures and reportedly found the results both accurate and effective. Layne suggested that Cayce offer his trance healing to the public, but Cayce was reluctant. He finally agreed on the condition that readings would be free. He began with Layne's help to offer free treatments to the townspeople. Reports of Cayce's work appeared in the newspapers, inspiring many postal inquiries.
Cayce was able to work just as effectively using a letter from the individual as with having the person present. Given the person's name and location, he said he could diagnose the physical and/or mental conditions and provide a remedy. He became popular and soon people from around the world sought his advice through correspondence.
Cayce's work grew in volume as his fame grew. He asked for voluntary donations to support himself and his family so that he could practice full time. He continued to work in an apparent trance state with a hypnotist all his life. His wife and eldest son later replaced Layne in this role. A secretary, Gladys Davis, recorded his readings in shorthand.

1920 to 1923: Texas Period

The growing fame of Cayce coupled with the popularity he received from newspapers attracted several eager commercially minded men who wanted to seek a fortune by using Cayce's clairvoyant abilities. Even though Cayce was reluctant to help them, he was persuaded to give the readings, which left him dissatisfied with himself and unsuccessful. A cotton merchant offered Cayce a hundred dollars a day for his readings about the daily outcomes in the cotton market.
However, despite his poor finances, Cayce refused the merchant's offer. Others wanted to know where to hunt for treasures; some wanted to know the outcome of horse races. Several times he was persuaded to give the readings as an experiment. However, he was not successful when he used his ability for such purposes, doing no better than chance alone would dictate. These experiments allegedly left him depleted of energy, distraught, and unsatisfied with himself. Finally, he came to the conclusion that he would use his gift only to help the distressed and sick.
He was persuaded to give readings on philosophical subjects in 1923 by Arthur Lammers, a wealthy printer who, by his own admission, had been "studying metaphysics for years". While in his supposed trance state, Cayce was told by Lammers that he spoke of Lammers's past lives and of reincarnation, something Lammers believed in, which was a popular subject of the day but not an accepted part of Christian doctrine. Cayce questioned his stenographer as to what he had said in his trance state and remained unconvinced. Cayce himself challenged Lammers's charge that he had validated astrology and reincarnation in the following dialogue:
Cayce "I said all that?...I couldn't have said all that in one reading." "No," Lammers said; "but you confirmed it. You see, I have been studying metaphysics for years, and I was able by a few questions, by the facts you gave, to check what is right and what is wrong with a whole lot of the stuff I've been reading. The important thing is that the basic system which runs through all the mystery religions, whether they come from Tibet or the pyramids of Egypt, is backed up by you. It's actually the right system." Cayce's stenographer recorded the following:

"In this we see the plan of development of those individuals set upon this plane, meaning the ability to enter again into the presence of the Creator and become a full part of that creation.Insofar as this entity is concerned, this is the third appearance on this plane, and before this one, as the monk. We see glimpses in the life of the entity now as were shown in the monk, in this mode of living. The body is only the vehicle ever of that spirit and soul that waft through all times and ever remain the same."

Cayce was quite unconvinced (that he had been referring to and, as such, had validated the doctrine of reincarnation), and the best Lammers could offer was that the reading "opens up the door" and went on to share his beliefs and knowledge of the "truth" with Cayce.
It appeared Cayce's instincts were telling him this was no ordinary reading. This client who came for a reading came with quite a bit of information of his own to share with Cayce and seemed intent upon convincing Cayce, now that he felt the reading had confirmed his strongly held beliefs.
It should be noted, however, that 12 years earlier Cayce had briefly alluded to reincarnation. In reading 4841-1, given April 22, 1911, Cayce referred to the soul being "transmigrated." Because, as noted below, there are several thousand missing Cayce readings from the period up to 1923, it is possible that he may have also mentioned reincarnation in other readings as well.
Cayce reported that his conscience bothered him severely over this conflict. Lammers overwhelmed, manipulated, confused, reassured and argued with Cayce. Ultimately his "trance voice," the "we" of the readings, also supposedly dialogued with Cayce and finally persuaded him to continue with these kinds of readings.
In 1925 Cayce reported that his "voice" had instructed him to move to Virginia Beach, Virginia.

1925 to 1945: Virginia Beach Period
Cayce's mature period, in which he created the several institutions which would survive him in some form, can be considered to have started in 1925. By this time he was a professional psychic with a small staff of employees and volunteers. The "readings" increasingly came to involve occult or esoteric themes.
In 1929, the Cayce hospital was established in Virginia Beach, sponsored by a wealthy recipient of the trance readings, Morton Blumenthal.
Cayce gained national prominence in 1943 through a high-profile article in Coronet titled "Miracle Man of Virginia Beach". He said he couldn't refuse people who felt they needed his help, and he increased the frequency of his readings to eight per day to try to make an impression on the ever-growing pile of requests. He said this took a toll on his health as it was emotionally draining and often fatigued him. He even went so far as to say that the readings themselves scolded him for attempting too much and that he should limit his workload to just two readings a day or else they would kill him.

Cayce's Death

Edgar Cayce's last reading on September 17, 1944, was for himself. He was now receiving thousands of requests for assistance. His own readings had repeatedly warned him that he should not try to undertake more than two sessions a day. But many of the letters he received were from mothers worried about their sons on the battlefields, and Cayce felt he could not refuse them his aid. His last reading told him that the time had come for him to stop working and rest.
On New Year's Day, 1945, he announced that he would be buried on the fifth of January. He was right. Edgar Cayce suffered from a stroke and died on January 3, 1945. He is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
Ten years earlier, Cayce had written a brief account of his work:

The life of a person endowed with such powers is not easy. For more than forty years now I have been giving readings to those who came seeking help. Thirty-five years ago the jeers, scorn and laughter were even louder than today. I have faced the laughter of ignorant crowds, the withering scorn of tabloid headlines, and the cold smirk of self-satisfied intellectuals. But I have also known the wordless happiness of little children who have been helped, the gratitude of fathers and mothers and friends... I believe that the attitude of the scientific world is gradually changing towards these subjects.

Another disturbing prophecy comes of great psychic of the 20th century. Edgar Cayce was known as "the sleeping prophet." He would go into a hypnotic trance in which he gave thousands of readings on different people. These dealt with past lives (including Atlantis), medical help and prophecies/predictions for the future. While not all of Edgar Cayce's predictions came true, a good majority of them did. He was dead-on when it came to most of the medical remedies he gave and doctors and scientists could never explain it. What Edgar Cayce was doing was tapping into the Akashic Records - a sort of library of everything residing in the higher planes. Edgar Cayce predicted that the Great Lakes would empty into the Gulf of Mexico in the future and that ancient repositories would be discovered when people reached the appropriate level of consciousness. The three repositories mentioned are Egypt, the Bimini area, and the Yucatan.

"The earth will be broken up in the western portion of America. The greater portion of Japan must go into the sea. The upper portion of Europe will be changed as in the twinkling of an eye. Land will appear off the east coast of America. When there is the first breaking up of some conditions in the South Sea and those as apparent in the sinking or rising of that that's almost opposite same, or in the Mediterranean, and the Etna area, then we many know it has begun."

"If there are greater activities in Vesuvius or Pelee, then the southern coast of California and the areas between Salt Lake and the southern portions of Nevada, we may expect, within the three months following same, inundation by the earthquakes. But these are to be more in the Southern than the Northern Hemisphere."

"There will be the upheavals in the Arctic and in the Antarctic that will make for the eruption of volcanoes in the torrid areas, and there will be the shifting then of the poles -- so that where there has been those of a frigid or the semi-tropical will become the more tropical, and moss and fern will grow.

"As to conditions in the geography of the world, of the country -- changes here are gradually coming about. No wonder, then, that the entity feels the need, the necessity for change of central location. For, many portions of the east coast will be disturbed, as well as many portions of the west coast, as well as the central portion of the U.S. In the next few years land will appear in the Atlantic as well as in the Pacific. And what is the coast line now of many a land will be the bed of the ocean. Even many battle fields of the present will be ocean, will be the seas, the bays, the lands over which The New World Order will carry on their trade as one with another.

"Portions of the now east coast of New York, or New York City itself, will in the main disappear. This will be another generation, though, here; while the southern portions of Carolina, Georgia -- these will disappear. This will be much sooner. The waters of the lakes will empty into the Gulf, rather than the waterway over which such discussions have been recently made. It would be well if the waterway were prepared, but not for that purpose for which it is at present being considered. Then the area where the entity is now located (Virginia Beach) will be among the safety lands, as will be portions of what is now Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and much of the southern portion of Canada and the eastern portion of Canada; while the western land -- much of that is to be disturbed as, of course much in other lands."

It is also understood, comprehended by some that a new order of conditions is to arise; there must be a purging in high places as well as low; and that there must be the greater consideration of the individual, so that each soul being his brother's keeper. A ”data gap” has been found between late 2012 running through May 2013. One explanation is that “our civilization gets knocked back to a pre-electronic state,” such as brought about by devastating solar activity. A new starting form of capitalism will emerge during 2017-2020.

12.18.16.2.6 is the Long Count date.

3 Cimi is the Tzolkin date.

4 Zotz is the Haab date.

What is the Long Count?

The Long Count is really a mixed base-20/base-18 representation of a number, representing the number of days since the start of the Mayan era. It is thus akin to the Julian Day Number.

The basic unit is the kin (day), which is the last component of the Long Count. Going from right to left the remaining components are:

uinal (1 uinal = 20 kin = 20 days)

tun (1 tun = 18 uinal = 360 days = approx. 1 year)

katun (1 katun = 20 tun = 7,200 days = approx. 20 years)

baktun (1 baktun = 20 katun = 144,000 days = approx. 394 years)

The kin, tun, and katun are numbered from 0 to 19.

What will happen when planet x passes?

The odds of Planet X hitting us are remote. Unfortunately, an impact is not necessary to cause major problems. Because of the gravity and magnetism of Planet X it will be able to disrupt things on earth from a distance, just as it is allegedly already doing to the solar system. Here's what McCanney says:
The effects on the Earth are very clear, both from my theoretical work and from what the ancients describe. There are episodes of mountain building. There could be a pole shift caused by a gravitational tidal wave that moves through the surface mantle of the Earth. There would be flooding both from tidal waves of the oceans, tremendous atmospheric storms and also from a huge pollution influx of oil and water -- hydrocarbons and water -- from inner planetary space onto Earth. And all of these things have been seen in the past.The Bible talks about, for example, when all the vermin, bugs, insects and snakes came out of the ground and overran the Earth. This was a direct result of the electric fields penetrating the mantle of the Earth and causing these creatures to leave the ground and come out of the ground. The atmospheric conditions include the increase in the number of volcanoes going off.I want to mention that these planetary objects do not have to come necessarily that close to Earth to cause even dramatic Earth changes. Electrical discharges can occur between the planets even a distance apart. These, in fact, have been measured with NASA satellites where, in the 1990s, we saw incredible electrical discharges flow between Jupiter and Earth, taking out a number of our communication satellites. The scientists at that time were totally puzzled that outer space could do this. They still don't understand the very electrical nature of our solar system.

The last passage of Planet X is believed to have occurred around 3,500 to 3,600 years ago (1,446 or 1,628 B.C.) . So, what happened 3,600 years ago? We've got the Jewish Exodus (which is found recorded in the Bible), the last mammoths going extinct, the sea level dropping world wide by 18-20 feet, the Sahara drying up.

Anything else? Well, 3,600 years ago, Thera, a monstrous volcano in the Mediterranean, erupted, as did Vesuvius. The eruption at Thera was 20 times as massive as Krakatoa in 1883. According to current data, the last two great eruptions of Vesuvius occurred in 1628 BC (3600 years ago) and 79 AD (around 1930 years ago). (the latter being the eruption which buried Pompei and Herculaneum).

The Earth is presently effected by the powerful magnetic field and influence of Planet X.

Planet X is as large as Jupiter; its electromagnetism is impacting the entire solar system, which is the main cause of all the other planetary bodies either suffering from global warming or increased luminosity. This will be more evident in the near future with an even greater increase in severe global weather patterns, shifting land masses, increased volcanic activity, earthquakes, and celestial anomalies, so that even the mot hardened skeptics must start to believe.

Many theorists say that when Nibiru passes Earth this time around on its orbit around the sun, it might bring terrifying consequences. Floods and wind-storms have increased from 60 events in 1980 to 240 events in 2007, with flooding itself up six-fold." Why do people believe Planet X will cause so much devastation?
By 2012, they say Planet X will finally start to near Earth after its 3,600 year orbit, passing just 14,000,000 miles from Earth (in space that is not far at all). It would definitely exert a gravitational force on the Earth, but they also say there would be a magnetic force, what they call 'gravitational force'.

What Evidences are There for Existence of Planet X/Nibiru

In spite of NASA's coverup and difficulty of an observation, McCanney explains that there is quite a bit of evidence pointing to the existence and near passage of Planet X.

Perturbations in the orbits of the planets: As early as the mid-1800s scientists noticed the orbits of Neptune and Uranus not going exactly according to theoretical expectations. These deviations could not be explained by miscalculations in the masses of the planets, as the direction of the deviations was downward according to McCanney.

Solar Weather: McCanney says, "We're seeing the Sun at an excited level never before seen. There was a solar maximum in the year 2000 that would be the expected time for the Sun to reach the maximum of activity on its 11-year solar cycle, and after that it would be expected to diminish in energy over that 11-year span of time. We should be well on the way in the year 2003 to the solar minimum, but instead, the Sun is at an explosive state never before seen in the history of our solar system. My theoretical work shows how, in fact, the Sun is interacting with some large object that we have not seen yet -- NASA probably has seen it, but it is not telling us -- causing the dramatic solar flares that we're seeing."

The following news reports seems to be backing up the fact that Planet X is in fact approaching Earth:

Earth's magnetosphere: NASA scientists on December 16, 2008 announced that “THEMIS spacecraft (a series of satellites monitoring earth's magnetosphere) have discovered a breach in Earth's magnetic field ten times larger than anything previously thought to exist.” NASA’s THEMIS mission comprises 5 probes launched in February 2007 to measure the Earth’s magnetic field. According to Wenhui Li, a University of New Hampshire space physicist analyzing the NASA THEMIS mission: "The opening was huge—four times wider than Earth itself."Jimmy Raeder, another University of New Hampshire scientist analyzing the THEMIS project data said: "We've seen things like this before but never on such a large scale. The entire day-side of the magnetosphere was open to the solar wind." The breach is allowing up to 20 times the normal amount of solar particles to enter the Earth’s atmosphere according to the NASA announcement.

The breach in the magnetosphere was not causing any great concern for the moment since solar activity is at a minimum. In fact, the last time the sun was so inactive was in 1913. The lack of solar activity has even caused some scientists to speculate that we are about to enter a mini-Ice Age. Most NASA scientists however agree that by 2012, when the sun moves into its solar maximum, the current situation will change dramatically. In 2006 a team of solar scientists led by Mausumi Dikpati of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) predicted that the "next sunspot cycle [#24] will be 30% to 50% stronger than the previous one [2003!]."
The sun’s heightened sunspot activity will lead to coronal mass ejections (CME) filled with solar particles or plasma that will dramatically spread out through the solar wind. Increased quantities of plasma will be carried to the Earth in giant solar waves passing through the breach in the magnetosphere. This is how one NASA scientist explained the situation: "We're entering Solar Cycle 24. For reasons not fully understood, CMEs in even-numbered solar cycles (like 24) tend to hit Earth with a leading edge that is magnetized north. Such a CME should open a breach and load the magnetosphere with plasma just before the storm gets underway. It's the perfect sequence for a really big event."

Massive solar storm to hit Earth in 2012 with 'force of 100m bombs'

Astronomers are predicting that a massive solar storm, much bigger in potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive flare this month was just a precursor to a massive solar storm building that had the potential to wipe out the entire planet's power grid.

Despite its rebuttal, NASA's been watching out for this storm since 2006 and reports from the US this week claim the storms could hit on that most Hollywood of disaster dates - 2012.

Similar storms back in 1859 and 1921 caused worldwide chaos, wiping out telegraph wires on a massive scale. The 2012 storm has the potential to be even more disruptive.

"The general consensus among general astronomers (and certainly solar astronomers) is that this coming Solar maximum (2012 but possibly later into 2013) will be the most violent in 100 years," quoted astronomy lecturer and columnist Dave Reneke as saying.

"A bold statement and one taken seriously by those it will affect most, namely airline companies, communications companies and anyone working with modern GPS systems.

"They can even trip circuit breakers and knock out orbiting satellites, as has already been done this year," added Reneke.

No one really knows what effect the 2012-2013 Solar Max will have on today's digital-reliant society.

Dr Richard Fisher, director of NASA's Heliophysics division, told Reneke the super storm would hit like "a bolt of lightning", causing catastrophic consequences for the world's health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken.

NASA said that a recent report by the National Academy of Sciences found that if a similar storm occurred today, it could cause "1 to 2 trillion dollars in damages to society's high-tech infrastructure and require four to 10 years for complete recovery".

The reason for the concern comes as the sun enters a phase known as Solar Cycle 24.

Most experts agree, although those who put the date of Solar Max in 2012 are getting the most press.

They claim satellites will be aged by 50 years, rendering GPS even more useless than ever, and the blast will have the equivalent energy of 100 million hydrogen bombs.

"We know it is coming but we don't know how bad it is going to be," Fisher told Reneke.

"Systems will just not work. The flares change the magnetic field on the Earth and it's rapid, just like a lightning bolt. That's the solar effect," he added.

Earth Weather: Earth weather has also been erratic in recent years. McCanney claims that this is directly a result of the increased solar activity which drives earth's weather according to his proven theories. The sun causes all our weather because it heats the earth unevenly. The contrast between the hot parts and the cold parts of the earth turns our atmosphere into a powerful engine. The engine keeps cold and warm air moving and makes changes in air pressure. Those air pressure changes cause wind. The heat of the sun also helps moisture to rise and form clouds, bringing rain, snow, or thunderstorms. So all the changes in our weather come, at least indirectly from the sun. As the sun warms up the earth, the ground absorbs the heat, and reflects some of it back into the air. That's one reason why it's usually warmer near the ground and cooler on the higher hills and mountains. The atmosphere acts like a big blanket over the earth, holding in the warmth and reflecting it back to earth.

More Active Sun Means Nasty Solar Storms Ahead
By SPACE News, posted: 09 June 2010: “The sun is about to get a lot more active, which could have ill effects on Earth… Solar storms occur when sunspots on our star erupt and spew out flumes of charged particles that can damage power systems. The sun's activity typically follows an 11-year cycle, and it looks to be coming out of a slump [sleep] and gearing up for an active period. "The sun is waking up from a deep slumber, and in the next few years we expect to see much higher levels of solar activity," said Richard Fisher, head of NASA's Heliophysics Division. "At the same time, our technological society has developed an unprecedented sensitivity to solar storms. The intersection of these two issues is what we're getting together to discuss." A major solar storm could cause twenty times more economic damage than Hurricane Katrina, warned the National Academy of Sciences in a 2008 report, "Severe Space Weather Events—Societal and Economic Impacts."

Earth changes: This is the Russian perspective on earth changes by the Academy of Sciences. Volcanic and seismic activity have increased 400-500 percent since 1975. All planets are changing, Earth is not singled out. Basically, everything in the solar system is experiencing unusual phenomena, increased activity and unusual weather. Hard facts are going unreported by western media.

Magnetic fields and brightness of the planets are changing. The planets are experiencing sizable increases in their overall luminosity. Venus for example, is showing us marked elevations in its overall brightness. Jupiter has such a high energetic charge now that there is actually a visible tube of ionizing radiation that has formed between it and its moon. You can actually see the luminous energy tube in photographs that have been taken recently.

Natural disasters increased 410 percent between 1963 and 1993. This does not take into account the largest increases that have taken place in the last 8-9 years since then! Dr. Dmitriev did a very elaborate calculation of natural disasters, to come up with these figures. Even the Sun's magnetic field increased by 230 percent since 1901.

A more recent study shows dramatic rise in natural disasters over past decade: “The number of events have gone up very, very dramatically,” CRED Director Debarati Guha-Sapir said in Geneva. During the 2000 to 2009 period, there were 385 disasters, an increase of 233 percent since 1980 to 1989, and of 67 percent since 1990 to 1999, according to CRED data. Though earthquakes made up 60 percent of natural disasters from 2000 to 2009, climate-related events, such as droughts, storms and floods, have made up the majority of disasters overall, increasing tenfold since data was first collected in 1950. “Have climate-related disasters increased? The answer is yes,” Sapir said, adding, “But it is not clear that climate change itself is an important factor.”Sapir said that CRED lacked sufficient research to determine the role of global warming in the increase in climate-related natural disasters.”

Nibiru is the name given by some to planet X. Planet X 2012 and the end of the world are connected by those who believe that planet X exists beyond pluto and is on a collision course with earth. They expect Planet X will either hit us or it will be a near miss which certain groups believe will take place in the early 21st century. Believers in this doomsday event usually refer to this object as Planet X or Nibiru.

Nibiru, also known as the Twelfth Planet, Planet X or "Planet of the Crossing" is represented in ancient history by a cross and a winged disk. It is described by some as supposedly the twelfth member in the solar system’s family of planets which includes the 10 planets, the sun, and the moon. Approximately every 11 years or so, the sun seems to have an extra large burst of activity. 2012 was thought to be the end of the next 11 cycle where sun spots would start to appear as the tell tale sign of extra solar activity - i.e. solar flares (which stay close to the surface of the sun) and Coronal Mass Ejections (which can travel millions of miles out into space). However, NASA scientists have said recently that it looks like the next cycle will come around in 2013 and not 2012.

So all the talk about solar flares has nothing to do with any end of the world 2012 prophecy, it's just part of the normal cycle of the sun.

Secondly, if earth was affected by a massive solar flare it would not actually "destroy" the earth but it could cause massive problems for anything depending on electricity. We are more vulnerable now with our all the things we need electricity for than we (the people on earth) were in 1859 when a solar storm blew out telegraph wires in Europe and America.

The important thing to understand is that the worst things that happen from sun flares are that there may be some electrical blackouts (the biggest ever was in Canada in 1989) and loss of radio and satellite communication. In a worst case scenario, these could last for months or more but that is a worst case scenario.

Governments are now looking at ways to (1) build early warning systems that the earth may be affected by a solar flare and (2) have good back up systems should power grids be affected.

Now while there is no scientific evidence to suggest the world will be destroyed by a solar flare in 2012, there are prophecies in the Bible which say that end time judgments on the earth (and 2012 is NOT given in the Bible as a date for the end of the world) will include negative affects from the heat of the sun.

Revelation 16:8-9 "And they fourth poured out his bowl upon the sun; and it was given to it to burn men with fire. And men were burned with great heat; and the blasphemed the name of God Who has the authority over these plagues; and they did not repent to give Him glory."

Coronal Mass Ejection

Coronal mass ejections (or CMEs) are huge bubbles of gas threaded with magnetic field lines that are ejected from the Sun over the course of several hours. Although the Sun's corona has been observed during total eclipses of the Sun for thousands of years, the existence of coronal mass ejections was unrealized until the space age. The earliest evidence of these dynamical events came from observations made with a coronagraph on the 7th Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO 7) from 1971 to 1973. A coronagraph produces an artificial eclipse of the Sun by placing an "occulting disk" over the image of the Sun. During a natural eclipse of the Sun the corona is only visible for a few minutes at most, too short a period of time to notice any changes in coronal features. With ground based coronagraphs only the innermost corona is visible above the brightness of the sky. From space the corona is visible out to large distances from the Sun and can be viewed continuously. The animated sequence of images at the top of this page were obtained with the High Altitude Observatory's coronagraph on the Solar Maximum Mission in April of 1980.

Magnetic fields in the sun can heat the sun's gases to tens of thousands of degrees. This energy can explode rapidly out of the sun's corona (the unstable outer surface) at very high speeds ejecting up to 10 billion tons of ionised gas into the solar system at speeds of up to 2 million miles per hour. These events are called coronal mass ejections (CME). This is different to solar flares because the plasma actually lifts off from and leaves (is ejected from) the surface of the sun. It is then carried by solar winds into the solar system and can be as big as the sun itself. A CME can result in magnetic storms when its gasses interact with the Earth's magnetic field. This distorts the shape of our magnetic field and speeds up the electrically charged particles that are trapped inside.
Coronal mass ejections are often associated with solar flares and prominence eruptions but they can also occur in the absence of either of these processes.

In November 4, 2003 a CME associated with the X28 solar flare, left the sun traveling at 2300 kilometres per second (8.2 million km/h). It's effect on the planet was minimal because the full blast of the CME was directed away from the earth.

Solar flares happen when when energy stored in twisted magnetic fields is suddenly released causing an explosion of plasma shot up from the sun's surface. Apparently the energy from these solar flares can be enough to produce 100 billion atomic bombs. But it's nothing to be concerned about because this all happens low down in the sun's corona (outer surface). This burst of electromagnetic radiation produced from these solar flares includes radio waves, x-rays and gamma-rays. Sometimes there will be a CME (CORONAL MASS EJECTIONS)associated with solar flares. Solar Flares and CME's can happen independently of each other.

The biggest flares are known as "X-class flares" based on a classification system that divides solar flares according to their strength. The smallest ones are A-class (near background levels), followed by B, C, M and X. Similar to the Richter scale for earthquakes, each letter represents a 10-fold increase in energy output. So an X is ten times an M and 100 times a C. Within each letter class there is a finer scale from 1 to 9.

C-class and smaller flares are too weak to noticeably affect Earth. M-class flares can cause brief radio blackouts at the poles and minor radiation storms that might endanger astronauts.

And then come the X-class flares. Although X is the last letter, there are flares more than 10 times the power of an X1, so X-class flares can go higher than 9. The most powerful flare measured with modern methods was in 2003, during the last solar maximum, and it was so powerful that it overloaded the sensors measuring it. The sensors cut out at X28.

The biggest X-class flares are by far the largest explosions in the solar system and are awesome to watch. Loops tens of times the size of Earth leap up off the sun's surface when the sun's magnetic fields cross over each other and reconnect. In the biggest events, this reconnection process can produce as much energy as a billion hydrogen bombs.

Solar activity operates on an 11 year cycle with the Sun being more active in the 11th year. The next cycle to be completed will be in 2012. This is why some are expecting extra large solar flares in 2012.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT SOLAR FLARES?
There is nothing we can do about solar flares. All we can do is take photos of them. Solar flares are totally out of our control. The moon and the sun affect our climate but they remain out of our control. Our energy is best spent finding responsible ways to look after earth, here and now. If the day came when the earth was fatally wounded by a solar flare, you would have bigger things to worry about. Why? Because when you die (and you will die no matter whether the earth is here for another gadzillion years of not) you will at that moment find out whether what you believed about life after death is true or not.

Hi, my name is David Morrison, I’m a space scientist at NASA Ames Research Center. For the last two years I’ve been answering hundreds of questions from the public about 2012 and the supposed threat to earth. And so now I want to take a chance to talk to some of you more directly.

There is no threat to earth in 2012. There is no danger. All of the talk about a doomsday is a big hoax perpetuated on the Internet and with people trying to make money. So please don’t worry about it. Let me talk about some of the specific things. There has been a lot of talk about a “Planet-x”, or a “Niburu” as a giant planet that’s going to hit the earth or at least come very close in December 2012. The simple fact is Nibiru does not exist.

Aside from worrying about the weird places, the ideas came from, all you have to do is ask the astronomers. If Nibiru or Planet-X were going to come into the inner solar system in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for the last decade. All over the world, amateur as well as professional. And it would be visible now to the naked eye. It’s not there. It’s a no-show. There’s nothing to worry about some object coming and striking the earth or damaging us.

There’s also been concern about a so-called galactic alignment. Because in December of every year the sun is roughly in the direction of the galactic center as seen from earth. This happens every year, it really does not mean anything, and there is nothing special about 2012. If you’re not worried about December 2009, don’t worry about December 2012. In fact, alignments, although it may sound scary to some people, are just not an issue for scientists. There are no special forces when planets align, or the sun aligns. It is sort of a curiosity, but not something of real scientific interest.

There’s also been concern that somehow the earth’s poles are going to flip. No one quite explains how this could happen, and if you’re talking about the rotation pole of the earth, that can’t change. It never has and it never will. Some people however are concerned about the change in the magnetic polarity. A shift of the north and south pole which does take place every few hundred thousand years. But there is no reason to think it will happen in 2012, and actually no evidence that it would do any harm to us, even if it did happen. Some people couple this with ideas of solar outbursts, of flares, or coronal mass ejections, which could do great damage to the earth. Well, the solar maximum takes place every 11 years, and occasionally there is some damage to satellites in orbit. And we see bright aurora or northern lights here, but very little real damage is done. And there’s no solar maximum predicted in 2012. The next solar maximum is predicted for the spring of 2013, and it’s actually anticipated that it will be much lower than usual.

Again, all this 2012 talk is just a hoax. It’s a fake. It’s nothing you should worry about. I get questions from many people who are really scared, even some young people who have said they are contemplating suicide, this sort of thing. It’s really sad. And the point of my talking to you now is just to explain to you that there is no problem there. And the many things you see on the Internet and Youtube where people claim that there is some horrible threat about to descend on us are not true. Don’t worry about 2012, and enjoy 2013 when it comes.

What is Galactic Alignment

It is important to define what the Galactic Alignment is in precise astronomical terms.

The Galactic Alignment is the alignment of the December solstice sun with the Galactic equator. This alignment occurs as a result of the precession of the equinoxes.

Precession is caused by the earth wobbling very slowly on its axis and shifts the position of the equinoxes and solstices one degree every 71.5 years. Because the sun is one-half of a degree wide, it will take the December solstice sun 36 years to precess through the Galactic equator (see diagram below).

The precise alignment of the solstice point (the precise center-point of the body of the sun as viewed from earth) with the Galactic equator was calculated to occur in 1998 (Jean Meeus, Mathematical Astronomy Morsels, 1997).

Thus, the Galactic Alignment "zone" is 1998 +/- 18 years = 1980 - 2016. This is "era-2012."

This Galactic Alignment occurs only once every 26,000 years, and was what the ancient Maya were pointing to with the 2012 end-date of their Long Count calendar.

These are the astronomical facts of the matter. From a larger perspective, we can visualize the 2012 Galactic Alignment in the following way:

Position A is where the December solstice sun was in relation to the Milky Way some 3,000 years ago. Position B is 1,500 years ago. And position C is "era-2012", when the December solstice sun has converged, as a result of the precession of the equinoxes, with the exact center-line of the Milky Way (the Galactic equator). Notice that the place of alignment is where the 'nuclear bulge' of the Galactic Center is located.

Descriptions of the process are also there, but it should be noted that Nick describes what I refer to as "the solstice-galaxy alignment" with a preference for the equinox as the measuring reference. Thus, he speaks of the "Holy Cross" of the equinox axis and the Milky Way. The point is that "solstice-galaxy alignment" and "equinox-galaxy cross" refer to the same event.

It is my hope that the these definitions will help to standardize the terminology so we can clearly discuss the rare precessional alignment that culminates in era-2012.

Glossary

The ecliptic: The path followed by the sun, moon, and planets. It is the plane of our solar system. The ecliptic encircles the earth and is divided into twelve constellations, or zodiac signs.

The Milky Way: The bright band of star that our solar system belongs to. It encircles the earth and is wider in the region of Sagittarius because that is where the 'nuclear bulge" of the Milky Way's center is located (our Milky Way is saucer shaped)

The Galactic equator: The precise mid-line running down the Milky Way. Analogous to the earth's equator, it divides the galaxy into two hemispheres, or lobes.

The Dark Rift in the Milky Way: A feature caused by interstellar dust that runs along the Milky Way from the Galactic Center northward past the constellation of Aquila.

The December solstice sun: The sun, on the December solstice. It is one-half of a degree wide.

The December solstice point: The precise midpoint of the sun, on the December solstice.

The Precession of the equinoxes: The earth wobbles very slowly on its axis and this causes the position of the equinox to shift backwards, or precess, through the signs of the ecliptic at the rate of one degree every 71.5 years. The full precessional wobble is complete in roughly 25,800 years

The vernal equinox point is defined by the intersection of the ecliptic and the celestial equator.

The Celestial Equator: The earth's equator projected into the stars. It is the plane of the earth's rotation

The Cross formed by the Milky Way and the ecliptic: Exactly as stated. There are two of these, one in early Sagittarius, the other in early Gemini. The former cross has the virtue of being located within the nuclear bulge of the Galactic Center.

The nuclear bulge / the Galactic Center: A bright and wide region of the Milky Way, visible to the naked eye and between Sagittarius and Scorpio. The more precise and abstract center-point of the nuclear bulge is the precise Galactic Center, located at about 6 degrees Sagittarius (sidereal) and 27 degrees in the tropical zodiac

Some sky-watchers believe 2012 will close with a "galactic alignment," which will occur for the first time in 26,000 years

In this scenario, the path of the sun in the sky would appear to cross through what, from Earth, looks to be the midpoint of our galaxy, the Milky Way, which in good viewing conditions appears as a cloudy stripe across the night sky.

Some fear that the lineup will somehow expose Earth to powerful unknown galactic forces that will hasten its doom—perhaps through a pole shift or the stirring of the supermassive black hole at our galaxy's heart.

Others see the purported event in a positive light, as heralding the dawn of a new era in human consciousness.

Dear Sir:

I have read already some years ago in a popular article about the idea that excentric masses of ice, accumulated near a pole, could produce from time to time considerable dislocations of the floating rigid crust of the earth. I have never occupied myself with this problem but my impression is that a careful study of this hypothesis is really desirable.

I think that our factual knowledge of the underlying facts is at present not precise enough for a reliable answer based exclusively on calculations. Knowledge of geological and paleontological facts may be of decisive importance in the matter. In any case, it would not be justified to discard the idea a priori as adventurous.

The question whether high pressure may not be able to produce fusion of nuclei is also quite justified. It is not known to me if a quantitative theory has been worked out by astrophysicists. The action of pressure would not be a static effect as classical mechanics would suggest, but a kinetic effect corresponding not to temperature but to degeneracy of gases of high density. You should correspond about this with an astro-phycisist experienced in quantum theory, f.i. Dr. L. Schwarzschild at the Princeton University Observatory.

I frequently receive communications from people who wish to consult me concerning their unpublished ideas. It goes without saying that these ideas are very seldom possessed of scientific validity. The very first communication, however, that I received from Mr. Hapgood electrified me. His idea is original, of great simplicity, and—if it continues to prove itself—of great importance to everything that is related to the history of the earth’s surface.

A great many empirical data indicate that at each point on the earth’s surface that has been carefully studied, many climatic changes have taken place, apparently quite suddenly. This, according to Hapgood, is explicable if the virtually rigid outer crust of the earth undergoes, from time to time, extensive displacement over the viscous, plastic, possibly fluid inner layers. Such displacements may take place as the consequence of comparatively slight forces exerted on the crust, derived from the earth’s momentum of rotation, which in turn will tend to alter the axis of rotation, which in turn will tend to alter the axis of rotation of the earth’s crust.

In a polar region there is continual deposition of ice, which is not symmetrically distributed about the pole. The earth’s rotation acts on these unsymmetrically deposited masses, and produces centrifugal momentum that is transmitted to the rigid crust of the earth. The constantly increasing centrifugal produced in this way will, when it has reached a certain point, produce a movement of the earth’s crust over the rest of the earth’s body, and this will displace the polar regions toward the equator.

Without a doubt the earth’s crust is strong enough not to give way proportionately as the ice is deposited. The only doubtful assumption is that the earth’s crust can be moved easily enough over the inner layers.

The author has not confined himself to a simple presentation of this idea. He has also set forth, cautiously and comprehensively, the extraordinarily rich material that supports his displacement theory. I think that this rather astonishing, even fascinating, idea deserves the serious attention of anyone who concerns himself with the theory of the earth’s development.

To close with an observation that has occurred to me while writing these lines: If the earth’s crust is really so easily displaced over its substratum as this theory requires, then the rigid masses near the earth’s surface must be distributed in such a way that they give rise to displace the crust by centrifugal effect. I think that this deduction might be capable of verification, at least approximately. This centrifugal momentum should in any case be smaller than that produced by the masses of deposited ice.

Pole Shift

The entire mental of the Earth will be shifted in the matter of a day, perhaps hours changing the positions of south and north poles causing worldwide disasters. Earthquakes would rock each and every continent. Massive tsunamis would cause destructions to coastal cities. It would be the ultimate planetary catastrophe.

Could a violent and sudden slippage of the Earth’s crust over its molten core spell doom for civilizations? Here are three early pole shift theories exactly how each proposed the world end.

In 1842, French mathematician Joseph Adhemar proposed that a melting and sudden collapse of the polar ice caps would destabilize Earth’s center of gravity, spawning a global tsunami.

In 1948, Electrical engineer Hugh Auchincloss Brown proposed that the increasing mass of the Antarctic ice-cap would suddenly and catastrophically tip Earth over like an unbalanced spinning top, causing global destruction.

In 1950s history professor Charles Hapgood theorized that a destabilizing build-up of the polar ice-caps would cause Earth’s crust to slip over its molten core, resulting in climate change as equatorial regions shift towards the poles.

Back in 1934, the Kentucky-born "sleeping prophett" Edgar Cayce, whom his followers believe could place his mind in contact with the entirety of time and space while unconscious, awoke from one of his self-induced trances to describe a startling, horrific future vision.

"The earth will be broken up in the western portion of America," Cayce forecast. "The greater portion of Japan must go into the sea. The upper portion of Europe will be changed as in the twinkling of an eye. Land will appear off the east coast of America. There will be the upheavals in the Arctic and in the Antarctic that will make for the eruption of volcanoes in the torrid areas, and there will be the shifting then of the poles — so that where there has been those of a frigid or the semi-tropical will become the more tropical, and moss and fern will grow." In subsequent visions, Cayce predicted that the pole-shifting cataclysm would destroy the cities of New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, and that the process would begin in 2000 or 2001.

Skeptics, of course, question Cayce's powers — as magician and paranormal researcher James Randi's "An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural" notes, the slumbering oracle also famously predicted that the mythical lost continent of Atlantis would rise again from the sea in 1968 or 1969. Nevertheless, Cayce's notion of a 21st-Century pole-shifting disaster has persisted. Not only that, but it seems to have coalesced in the hive mind of pop-culture apocalyptic enthusiasts with other signs — ranging from the end of an ancient Maya calendar cycle to the cryptic verse of 16th Century French apothecary Nostradamus — to confirm the suspicion that the world as we know it will end in 2012.

But what may make Cayce's vision of a cataclysmic pole shift even more alluring is that it evokes — albeit, in hyperbolic fashion — a genuine geophysical controversy. Since at least the mid 19th century, a succession of scientific thinkers have raised the possibility that the Earth's mantle and crust might sometimes slip dramatically, which could leave a place like New York much closer to the North Pole than usual. Such a phenomenon, which scientists call true polar wander, has the potential to shift the Earth's face so radically that once-frigid Alaska could sit at the sweltering equator. The pole-shift hypothesis was popularized in the late 1950s by historian Charles Hapgood whose 1958 book on the subject, The Earth's Shifting Crust, featured a forward by Albert Einstein.

More recently, the pole shift idea got a boost from a research team led by Princeton University assistant professor of geosciences Adam Maloof, who examined ancient rocks in Norway and in 2006 published the first compelling evidence that such an event had occurred in the Earth's distant past, about 800 million years ago. Maloof and other scientists, though, believe the pole shift occurred over a muchlonger time scale — at least a million years or more — without the cataclysmic consequences envisioned by Cayce.

Prophecies of Hopi Tribe

Hopi

Some of the most specific prophecies come from Hopi tribe of the American South West. The Hopi believe that the world has been created and destroyed for four times and we are about to see the destruction of the fourth world.

1st world: ended when all of the volcanoes of the world erupted and an all consuming fire engulfed and destroyed the first world.

2nd world: ended when the poles shifted and the earth was covered in ice. Mountains fell into oceans and seas.

3rd world: ended when the waters flooded the world. Large continents sunk and broke apart into small islands. The Choosen were warned by the Spider Woman and built large boats out of reeds. In fact, similar traditions of a worldwide catastrophe exist among peoples of all continents including Scandinavians, Greeks, Egyptians, Hebrews, Sumerians, Babylonians, Persians, Hindus, Fiji Islanders, Eskimos, native North and South Americans and many other sources.

The end of the fourth world (called Tuwaqachi by the Hopi) is described by Frank Waters. Eventually a gourd full of ashes would be invented, which if dropped from the sky would boil the oceans and burn the land causing nothing to grow for many years (atomic bomb). This would be the sign for a certain Hopi to bring out his teachings in order to warn the world that the third and final event would happen soon. That it could bring an end to all life unless people correct themselves and their leaders in time.

The final stage, called "The great day of Purification", has been described as a "Mystery Egg" in which the forces of the swastika and the Sun plus a third force symbolized by the color "red" culminate either in total rebirth or total annihilation. The degree of violence will be determined by the degree of inequity caused among the peoples of the world and in the balance of nature. In this crisis rich and poor will be forced to struggle as equals in order to survive.

"The Fourth World shall end soon, and the Fifth World will begin. This the elders everywhere know. The Signs over many years have been fulfilled, and so few are left."

"This is the First Sign: We are told of the coming of the white-skinned men, like Pahana, but not living like Pahana men who took the land that was not theirs. And men who struck their enemies with thunder. "This is the Second Sign: Our lands will see the coming of spinning wheels filled with voices. In his youth, my father saw this prophecy come true with his eyes -- the white men bringing their families in wagons across the prairies." "This is the Third Sign: A strange beast like a buffalo but with great long horns, will overrun the land in large numbers. These White Feather saw with his eyes -- the coming of the white men's cattle." "This is the Fourth Sign: The land will be crossed by snakes of iron." "This is the Fifth Sign: The land shall be criss-crossed by a giant spider's web." "This is the Sixth sign: The land shall be criss-crossed with rivers of stone that make pictures in the sun." "This is the Seventh Sign: You will hear of the sea turning black, and many living things dying because of it." "This is the Eight Sign: You will see many youth, who wear their hair long like my people, come and join the tribal nations, to learn their ways and wisdom. "And this is the Ninth and Last Sign: You will hear of a dwelling-place in the heavens, above the earth, that shall fall with a great crash. It will appear as a blue star. Very soon after this, the ceremonies of my people will cease.

Before the time of the great Purification, they will make metal roads for iron horses and hang metal ropes in the air. (pre-Colombian Hopi prophecy) First they will bring back pieces of the Moon which will upset the balance and unleash disastrous forces. (ibidem) Near the day of the Great Purification, there will be cobwebs spun back and forth in the sky through which 'people will walk' . (ibidem) The Purification will begin shortly after humans build a great house in the sky (MIR and/ or new European/US space station?). By then there will be fires everywhere and greedy, selfish, power-mad leaders, internal wars. (ibidem). The beginning of the imminent Fifth World will be heralded by the arrival of a being known as Pahana, or the lost "White Brother".

The Hopis say that there will two more worlds after this. "The Sixth Age" which is "The World of Prophecy and Revelation" and "The Seventh Age" is "The World of Completion".

I think we are seeing the things happening around the globe.

Hopi Prophecies

"World War III will be started by those peoples who first revealed the light (the divine wisdom or intelligence) in the other old countries (India, China, Islamic Nations, Africa). The United States will be destroyed, land and people, by atomic bombs and radioactivity. Only the Hopis and their homeland will be preserved as an oasis to which refugees will flee. Bomb shelters are a fallacy. The war will be 'a spiritual conflict with material matters. Material matters will be destroyed by spiritual beings who will remain to create one world and one nation under one power, that of the Creator.”

"That time is not far off. It will come when the Saquasohuh (Blue Star) Kachina dances in the plaza and removes his mask. He represents a blue star, far off and yet invisible, which will make its appearance soon. [Some Hopi spokespersons suggest that Hale-Bopp is the Blue Star.]”

The time is foretold by a song sung during the Wuwuchim ceremony. It was sung in 1914 just before World War I, and again in 1940 before World War II, describing the disunity, corruption, and hatred contaminating Hopi rituals, which were followed by the same evils spreading over the world. This same song was sung in 1961 during the Wuwuchim ceremony.

"The Emergence to the future Fifth World has begun. It is being made by the humble people of little nations, tribes, and racial minorities. 'You can read this in the earth itself. Plant forms from previous worlds are beginning to spring up as seeds. This could start a new study of botany if people were wise enough to read them. This prophecies came from Mother Shipton. Mother Shipton was born in 1488 in a cave near Knaresborouh, North Yorkshire,England. Mother Shipton correctly predicted the death of Henry the Eight and the defeat of the Spanish Armada. She predicted Queen Victoria by name. and prophesized the upheavals of world war I & II..

Here are her prophecies that seems to be happening in our own time.

A carriage without horse will go,

disaster fill the world with woe.

In London, Primrose Hill shall be

in center hold a bishops sea.

Around the world men's thoughts will fly,

Wizard Merlin

We hear the wonderful stories of the mythical wizard Merlin from the tales. But that is the Merlin of fiction. The real Merlin was much darker with prophecies that foretold the end of the world. Merlin was considered one of the greatest Oracles in Europe. His prophecies include terrorist attack, global warming and planetary catastrophes possibly in our own time.

Merlin was described to be half man and half demon. He was called as Merlin the wild. A half craze man of a forest.

The prophecies of Merlin seem to predict the events that happen after centuries of years. One thousand years before anyone knew that the America existed, Merlin predicted first American colony by name.

Merlin foresaw a British victory over Napoleon at Waterloo, and the horrors and evil of the holocaust. These events came true.

Merlin foresees more global problem.

A lot of these predictions are happening. It is very much similar to the modern scientific predictions of Global Warming.The Prophecies of Merlin closes with an astrological apocalypse, described as a revolution
of the ordered paths of the planets through the Signs of the Zodiac.

Some people think it is happening now. We hear about the glacier melting. We are experiencing tsunamis, earthquakes, climates change..

One of the remarkable things about the sibyl is that she wrote her pronouncement on the oak leaves. If oak leaves blew into the wind, they will not reassemble so the messages were often scrambled.

Her prophecies would not mean much if her prophecies does not have such a good track record.

In the 6^th century BC, the sibyl predicted the invasion of Italy by Hannibal, 700 years before it happened and she predicted his ultimate defeat.

She predicted the rise of Emperor Constituent by the name 800 years before he was born.

Her greatest prophecy gave her a place of honor among early Christians. Sibyl gave prophecies about a coming of new golden age and a child will be born to initiate the golden age. It was a prophecy of coming of Jesus Christ 20 years before his birth. That caused her to be revered by early Christians and even Michelangelo gave her a prominent place in the 16^th chamber.

No one knows how she saw into the future. But new archeological discovery suggest that the source of her prophecy was gas and not god. The evidence comes from another Oracle of the ancient world. This one at Delphi, Greece.

The most famous oracle of all was oracle of Delphi. At Delphi it is told that the god of Apollo could inspire and person, who could be the priestess of the Apollo who could foresee the future. Delphi is a small village about a 100 miles away from modern Athens.From the 8^th century BC to 4^th century AD, pilgrims travelled there from though out the Mediterranean to post question to the priestess of the Apollo. The priestess entered into underground chamber and enters here altered state. In the altered state she would give prophecies that were intriguing and often surprisingly accurate. In her altered state she would often talk about chewing of laurel leaves and people have commented that this may have had psychotropic effects.

There is other evidence of psychotropic effects. In 1998 a geological team discovered two fault lines running under the temple of Delphi which let to underground storage of ethylene gas. In large quantities the gas is powerful hallucinogens that produce visions.

Like Delphi, the cave of the Sibyl was also underground connected with volcanic gas and fault lines.

Nostradamus prediction about World War Three states that a Planet X will come and hit the earth and this will be the cause of some major destructions in the world including the city of Rome. He states that there will a Third World War with the 'camels'. He said that the 'camels will come to drink from the Danube'. The Danube is a river in Europe and as for camels, there are no camels in Europe (unless you consider the ones that are there in the zoos). So by camels most probably he meant the countries of Iran and Iraq. This will take place somewhere after 2011 and 2012. There will be a war between the Arab and the Christian world and this war will destroy almost all the countries except for two and that's India and China. This is because, these two countries will not take part in the war.

Nostradamus predictions after 2012 sates that there will be advent of peace. He says:

In Cancer (next to occur July-August, 2013), by him all calamitous war will eventually be ended,
A new Leader will be anointed (born),
He will bring Peace to the Earth for a very long time."

This probably indicates that after the huge Third World War, a new leader will be born and he will be the one who will bring peace and hopes in this earth and will remove all traces of destruction. He also predicts that this peace will remain for a long time.

Nostradamus History

Michel de Nostradame, more commonly known by his Latin name, Nostradamus, was born to Jewish parents on December 14, 1503, in St. Remy de Provence. When he was nine, the family converted to Catholicism in order to avoid persecution from the Spanish Inquisition, something which Nostradamus was mindful of throughout his life as a ‘heretic,’ despite appearing to practice as a devout catholic.

The oldest of four brothers Nostradamus was educated at Avignon where he was considered a child prodigy. At home he was schooled in Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Maths and Astrology by his grandfather, Jean de Nostradame. Nostradamus went on to attend Montpeillier University to study as a doctor and after obtaining a bachelor degree in Medicine he travelled round the countryside in the south of France treating impoverished victims of the black plague.

Even in the early stages of his career, Nostradamus had ideas that strayed from orthodox practices. He refused to cut patients or treat them with leeches – a common practice at the time – instead insisting the best cure was to allow patients water, air and clean bedding. After four years in the countryside he returned to Montpeillier to complete his doctorate, but due to his rebellious methods was expelled.

He then turned his attention to practicing medicine in Toulouse where he received a letter from Julius-Cesar Scaliger, a philosopher considered second only to Erasmus. Scaliger invited him to stay at his home in Agen where he mentored Nostradamus in metaphysics and esoteric studies. It was a happy time for the future prophet, epitomised by his marriage to an attractive and wealthy French girl in 1934. Her identity is unknown though some of speculated it was Henriette D’Encausse. With his wife he fathered a son and a daughter, but after three years of marriage his family ironically fell victim to bubonic plague. Despite his exposure to Black Death in the early days of his medicinal career, Nostradamus was unable to save his young family from the disease and they all died.

Nostradamus sunk into a deep depression and spent the next six years wandering through France and Italy. Little is known of him bout this period of his life though it was during this time of the “dark night of the soul” that Nostradamus nurtured his prophetic gift. Shortly afterwards the dawn of his now legendary ability would rise.

Whilst he was in Italy, Nostradamus encountered a group of Franciscan monks. As they passed the Frenchman gasped and threw himself to the ground, bowing his head and clutching at the habit of a monk by the name of Felice Peretti. Coming from a lowly standing, the former swine herder questioned Nostradamus why he behaved in such an unusual way. The psychic replied: “I must yield myself and bow before his Holiness.” In 1585, 19 years after the death of Nostradamus, Peretti became Pope Sixtus V.
In 1547, Nostradamus settled in Salon de Provence, a small humble town in the Rhone region of southern France. It was here that he met and married Anne Ponsart Gemelle, a rich widow with whom he fathered a son they named Cesar after his former mentor in Italy. It was during his time in Salon that Nostradamus began to seriously practice metaphysics and further develop his psychic ability. He spent much of his time studying Egyptian and Alexandrian black magic and was greatly influenced by ‘De Mysteriis Egyptorium,’ written by an ancient scholar from the Temple of Athena. It was from these readings that Nostradamus learned the techniques of communicating with the souls of spirits. In 1550, he published his first metaphysical records and produced an annual Almanac which contained

12 prophecies, one for each month of the year. Five years later he published the first of ten books, “Les Propheties.” The volumes contained predictions from his own time until and predicts the end of the world in the future.

To enter the spirit world Nostradamus would go into a trance. One such method of inducing prophetic visions was taken from the ancient pagan art known as scrying; staring into a flame or a bowl of steaming water dowsed with pungent oils and spices. He would then consume nutmeg, a mild hallucogen which allowed him to travel into a hypnotic trance. Another form was a ritualistic practice associated with the Delphic priestess, Branchus, a soothsayer from the famed Oracle of Delphi in Greece. Sitting on a brass tripod stool, the legs of which were aligned to the exact angles of the Great Pyramids of Giza, he was able to create an electromagnetic energy that enabled him to pass from the material world into supernatural dimensions.

Nostradamus’ predictions were to give him a sudden rise to fame and on July 14th, 1556 his credibility attracted the attention of Catherine de Medici. He was appointed court physician and asked to read horoscopes for the seven royal children. Nostradamus confided in the Queen his vision of the death of her husband, King Henry II of France and warned the King not to duel in his 41st year. His vision would come true when in 1559 at the age of 40, Henry died after a lance pierced his eye during a jousting contest held to celebrate the marriage of his daughter to King Philip II of Spain.

Other than a brief period in 1554 when he settled in Marseille, Nostradamus spent the remainder of his days in Salon. A renovated version of his house on the Place de la Poissonnerie can be visited today. The end came after the Frenchman developed gout which turned into a fatal form of dropsy. On July 1st 1566, Nostradamus sent for the local priest to read him his last rites. Before the priest left him that night, Nostradamus said it would be the last time anyone would see him alive. As he himself had predicted his limp body was found the next morning.

His wife carried out his last wishes and entombed his body upright in a wall of the Church of the Cordeliers and erected a marble plaque to celebrate his memory. His resting place became a pilgrimage and he remained there undisturbed for almost 150 years when in 1700 city officials decided to move this body to a more prominent position in the church. Whilst the tomb was open they couldn’t resist taking a look inside. Around the neck of the skeleton was a medallion inscribed with the date 1700.
In 1791, during the French Revolution – another historic event predicted by Nostradamus – drunken soldiers broke into the church and desecrated the great man’s tomb. One soldier is said to have drunk from the skeletons skull in the hope the psychic powers of Nostradamus would pass to him. In battle the following day the soldier met a violent end when he was hit by a snipers bullet – just as Nostradamus had predicted:

You remember the French Revolution, right?
The peasants ("the enslaved populace") rising to power, the aristocracy taken down and beheadedÂ (the "headless idiots," now "princes and lords ... held captive in prisons"). In another verse, the "great wall" falling is said to mean the storming of the Bastille.
It's a bit of a stretch, right? It's possible that Nostradamus saw the coming of a peasant uprising through completely non-astrological or occult means, but through his own eyes as he saw the contrast between aristocrat and commoner in 16th-century France.

Look, just because you've never heard of the Great London Fire of 1666 doesn't mean it wasn't a really big deal.
It pretty much obliterated all of medieval London ("the ancient lady") within the old Roman walls. Only six deaths were recorded (hence "the six" in the second line), though commoners' deaths may not have been recorded at the time.
The fire, which started in a baker's shop, burned for three days straight. If only someone had passed along a copy of Nostadamus' book, maybe Londoners might have known it was coming.

Did he really mean NEW Orleans? Hmm...The shaking of land and sea might describe the hurricane (well, the shaking of the sea would). Could the people with foreign tongues be aid workers from other parts of the world, or other parts of the country?
But what are Tours, Blois, Angers, Reims and Nantes doing there?
Pre-Katrina, this prophecy was originally thought to refer to France. Maybe it still should.

The great man will be struck down in the day by a thunderbolt,

An evil deed foretold by the bearer of a petition.

According to the prediction, another falls at night time.

Conflict at Reims, London and a pestilence in Tuscany.

Thunderbolts and gunshots: not terribly dissimilar. And the great man was struck down in the day, as John F. Kennedy was. The other falling at nighttime would be Bobby Kennedy (five years later).

Now, it can work if you want it to, but do you really think a Secret Service agent reading that passage in November 1963 would have cause to be concerned?

Probably not.

And what of Reims, London and Tuscany

Pasteur will be celebrated almost as a God-like figure.
This is when the moon completes her great cycle,
But by other rumors he shall be dishonored.

Like many surnames, Louis Pasteur's probably once indicated a profession.
Pasteur, in French, could also mean pastor, so some argue that this bit of Nostradamian prose could just be about any old priest. Others call it a shout-out to the man who studied microbial decay, brought you spoilage-resistant milk and found a vaccine for rabies.
No one doubts he deserved the props. You be the judge

There will be scourges the like of which was never seen,
Famine within plague, people put out by steel,
Crying to the great immortal God for relief.

OK, this one is hard to dispute.
Let's face it. It's an accurate description of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "Scourges the like of which was never seen," people "crying to the great immortal God."
With that said, this verse is accurate because it cheats a bit on the specifics. Critics charge that it's so vague that it could also be used to describe a whole host of wartime atrocities during any of many wars that took place between Nostradamus' time in the 16th century and today ... or even the future.

8.World War II/Hitler

The two greatest ones of Asia and of Africa,

From the Rhine and Lower Danube they will be said to have come,

Cries, tears at Malta and the Ligurian side.

Also ...

From the depths of the West of Europe,

A young child will be born of poor people,

He who by his tongue will seduce a great troop;

His fame will increase towards the realm of the East.

These two verses may in fact describe World War II and Hitler ... or not.

Was the most notable bit about Hitler his impoverished upbringing? What about the genocidal, megalomaniacal tendencies? Don't those deserve something?

Much of the talk of Nostradamus' prophecy of Hitler may come from his use, in the original text, of the Latin word "Hister" to describe the Danube.

Trust us, he was talking about a river, not a dictator: no self-respecting prophet would make such an egregious spelling error.

Twin Towers

Earthshaking fire from the center of the Earth

Will cause tremors around the New City.

Two great rocks will war for a long time,

Then Arethusa will redden a new river.

Well, two great rocks could be two towers, right? But would you say those towers were warring?

If you read this verse before Sept. 11, you might assume it referred to an earthquake or volcanic eruption. Earthshaking fire, tremors, rocks warring (in other words, continental plates colliding), but who really knows.

Back when Nostradamus wrote those lines, skyscrapers like the Twin Towers, jumbo jets like the ones that hit them and cities like modern-day New York were probably unthinkable and unimaginable, so if he foresaw these events, would he have even known what he was seeing?
