Today I’m about to show you photos you’ve never seen before on my blog. They are just about the most common photos you’d see in any home decor blog, but I’ve been almost too embarrassed to let you see them on here, until now. Welcome to my living room tour!

I don’t even know why I’ve been holding back on showing you these, aside from not feeling like this room was ready for a debut and my own doubt that they would look good enough to post. But I’ve decided I’m taking some risks and just going to put them out there. How about that?

I know you’ve seen parts of this room before, but did you realize you’ve never seen the whole thing?

This is the living room in our 113 year old Colonial home. The photo above is the view when you walk in the front foyer and look to the left, you see this part of the space. You can read more about some of the projects I’ve done in here like the zebra ottoman, getting real couches, and customizing my curtains. Oh and how I finally up that extra long curtain rod, it’s about 150 inches end to end just to span the window mouldings.

Working on those curtains was an ongoing project. It took me a few tries and many months to find the curtains that I wanted and then even longer to sew on additional fabric since our ceilings are 9 feet tall and our windows are huge.

This isn’t meant to be a detail post, just an overview of a space you’ve never seen before in my home. These black shelves are a piece my husband acquired in college. I’ve contemplated painting them, against his knowledge, but like the look of them in front of our walls. The paint is Creamy Mushroom by Behr paint. Plus there is more black in the space and it connects those accents.

The shelves collect special items across the seasons. The 58 is the number of times Dan signed his name on our mortgage papers, so it’s special to us and this first house of ours. Can you believe it was that many signatures?

If you turn around with the shelves behind you, there is the silver dresser that I painted. It stores our tools and miscellaneous items like fabric I intend to use for some project or the other. Read about how to hang items in plaster walls here, which I demonstrated on using those wedding photos above the dresser.

This is the first view you’ve ever actually seen of the full couch. I wrote about how to frame that large map here and the postage stamp art here. The other maps are from our honeymoon {of the Bahamas on the top left} and a framed piece of fabric {bottom right}.

I’m seriously considering spray painting the frames of the mirrors on the wall {on the far right} white. What do you think of them? This room has a lot of tan going on and I’d like to get rid of some of it. Tan walls, tan rug, tan couch, tan frames. Too much!

Here is a sneak peek of a project I did recently, that striped pillow is a knock off. Can you guess where from? I’ll post about the how to make it soon.

And the lamps need some life right? I plan to spruce them up sometime, but I’m still trying to figure out exactly how.

Here is the total room shot. This is looking in from the dining room and was taken with our new Sigma 10-20mm Lens for our Canon Rebel T3. Dan wanted to get it for more photography work he is doing for his job and this was the first I had tried it out. I love how much it gets into the shot. I can’t wait to see what it does when I photograph the bathroom.

And how about that to spice up your Wednesday? Some never-before-seen photos of my house. Read more about the blue velvet coffee-table-turned-ottoman here.

But of course like any space in our house I’m dreaming of things I’d like to still do to it. Here is the living room wish list:

Paint the large back wall in a medium charcoal grey – I’d love to do that in American Clay, which is not quite a paint, but an environmentally friendly product that is designed to give some depth to a wall. Aside from the fact that I’ve been dying to do an accent wall, I think it would look amazing here.

Line the inside of the lamps – For this I’m picturing silver contact paper like this. And I’d love to cover the shades with a chunky material to give them some interest. I even have a piece of fabric, I’m just trying to figure out how to get it to stay on.

Get a new rug – I just found my dream rug for the room here. It’s a little out of my price range though

Build our own media center - Something with doors and a connecting bridge across the top would be cool. We have the perfect corner, now we just need the time and supplies.

Make seasonal pillows – I’d love the time to change out the pillows for the change of season. Now I just have a few that we use, but holiday pillows in silver or gold would be so fun right?

Thanks for coming on the living room tour.

Last we left the front porch, it was getting a makeover. A much needed makeover. We have a 113 year old house and a lovely covered front porch, which spans the width of our home. I promised you this year I would show you the porch before and after, since we actually completed this project last summer, and after last week’s before pictures, we’re in need of some progress out there.

Last summer we had a very important moment as DIY-ers. It was both a question and an answer in the same sentence.

We can hire someone to do work at our house?!

For the most part we’ve taken on projects ourselves, but after weeks of sanding and stripping the many layers of paint off the porch floor, we decided we needed help. That very old paint was going nowhere.

Dan had found a local company that did home restorations and improvement so after they came out to look at things and we told them what we were looking for, we decided they were ones for the job. So they moved in with the big guns.

Meaning, very big sanders. That thing was so powerful it actually vibrated the entire first floor.

And they brought all of the accessories to go with the sander. This was about half the amount of floor pads we used when we refinished the floors in our upstairs. The wood in our house is more than 100 years old and not sealed with the products they made these days. It stays on there!

It turns out that the man doing this project for us had to go rent this floor sander because his hand sander was not removing the paint. It made us feel good to know it wasn’t us. We spent weeks sanding and used all different kinds of strippers to remove the paint off the floor and nothing worked.

He told us he had to get diamond crusted sandpaper. Turns out that old paint was stubborn.

After many hours of sanding away we finally were down to the raw wood. It took a couple of days just to get the paint off.

It was actually kind of neat to see the porch like this. Of course he had to do the edges by hand and I was just praying it wouldn’t rain and damage any of that exposed wood.

Once we saw it with the paint removed, we could tell more where the damage was and where the repair had been over the years, like here by the steps.

This entire corner ended up coming out since it was rotted. But that will be for another post, so come back then and see more of our old porch makeover. Next up, we pick out a color and the wood got repaired.

Here is the porch makeover plan:

<del>Remove all the paint on the porch</del> More on that here

Remove paint on the concrete stairs

Repair broken wood

Repaint the porch and touch up any trim

Stain the flower boxes?

Get a rug

Repaint the chairs

Replace the cushions on the chairs

Get a coffee table of some kind

Add decorations like lanterns, pillows, plants and other accessories including outdoor lights

Welcome to the new Decor Adventures! If you are reading this is a blog feed or reader, please come over to the site and see my new design and logo. My transfer to WordPress last week was successful and now I’m getting used to this new home. I plan to make lots of updates, so stick with me and I know you will find lots of useful and inspirational info right here.

Today I’m sharing some tips on how to clean hardwood floors. About 85% of our floors are original hardwood, which means they are 113+ years <del>old</del> young. Before we moved into our house a few years ago we refinished them on the entire second level. They get extremely dusty and since they are so dark, you can see everything that falls on them.

People think old hardwood has to be specially cared for, but cleaning wood floors is is pretty simple and today I’m going to show you my step by step of how I wash our wood floors. If you have a newer house, or even tile or other surfaces, stick around, you can use my method too.

First, some tips on a floor cleaning routine. Here is what I keep in mind for keeping the underfoot especially sparkly:

Go shoe free – We keep most shoes at the door and use slippers that are meant for indoors only. This keeps about 80% of the dirt at bay.

Work from the top down – When you are cleaning your house, do the floors last. Everything falls down anyway, so why double your work?

Dust the baseboards – When preparing for floor cleaning and after you’ve dusted a room, sweep a dust wand over the baseboards. All the dirt will fall to the ground and you’re going to pick it up anyway.

Have your ducts cleaned – We actually have to do this, but dust-free vents will mean a dust-free house. Or at least a mostly dust-free house.

When we cleaned our floors, we used to do the whole sweep, fill a bucket, carry it upstairs, and wet mop routine. My magic solution for easy and quick floor washing for me came when I got a steam mop for Christmas. You know how they say not to get your wife appliances for gifts? Well it doesn’t work with me, I’ve never washed the floors more in my life since I got it.

The floor in my office was especially filthy so I thought it would be a good time to show you a little before and after. I rounded up some dust bunnies special for this experiment. Not really, they just gather like this on their own. I need a sign in my house that says

Don’t mind the dust bunnies. They’re the only pets we have.

Did you catch that shot under my glossy blue dresser?! My floor cleaning supplies are simple. They include:

A broom

A dustpan

A steam mop

First I remove everything from the space, then I sweep the entire room. Do you still use the old fashioned broom and dustpan method? I feel like not many people do since the Swiffers and all that are popular.

After I sweep up the dirt I get steaming. I have the Shark Steam Pocket Mop (and no they are not paying me to talk about this). I like this method of cleaning because I don’t have to mix any chemicals, carry buckets around or wear gloves. Plus it’s totally natural.

You’ll be able to see the steam on the floor and an entire room only takes a few moments. I can do the bedrooms and hallway in the time it takes for me to listen to a couple 80s songs on my iPod. I heart the 80s.

You will definitely know that you’ve picked up dirt because your mop will look like this or worse. No worries though, because all that dirt comes right out in the wash. I toss these pads in with my cleaning rags.

The steam dries within seconds and by the time you finish the room, you can start to bring the furniture back in. And after that floors are dirt and dust free. Our floors were refinished with two coats of oil-based Polyurethane, although they could have used three coats if you ever refinish floors yourself.

I like this method because it gets minimal water on the wood but definitely picks up anything that is there. Plus there is no odor at all.

We use this cleaning method in the entire house, including the kitchen which is a not-so-attractive linoleum the previous owner put it. It’s on my wish list to replace but I don’t think it’s in the cards. The basement bathroom renovation is still underway.

If you want more tips on cleaning floors, Our Fifth House did a write up on How to Clean Dark Wood Floors here.

I’m really excited for this week to be here. Tomorrow and Wednesday I’m switching my blog to WordPress. I’ve been on Blogger since I started blogging in 2009 and although I’ve been able to do a lot of things, including write some html code, I’m looking forward to a new design and more organization in the new platform.

Once you come back, you’ll see the new Decor Adventures, so please take a look around then and let me know if you see anything that isn’t working correctly or maybe doesn’t link as it should. I appreciate the help!

While I’ve been working on the blog switch, I’ve also been doing some crafts at home. It’s been a goal of mine to make things from the items I currently own, since I have a very extensive collection of craft items and I’m trying to stay on a budget. One item was some leftover tile we had in the garage and it occurred to me to make some DIY outdoor tile coasters.

Best part, this was a free craft!

The supplies for this easy and quick project are simple, you only need:

Leftover tiles

Cork for a backing and

Heavy Glue

Plus scissors and a straight edge to cut the tile. This rolled cork can be found at the craft store. I also used it to make a travel map a while back.

The tile is leftover from the back splash in our kitchen. I do like them individually. They have a variety of earthy colors in them, but I wouldn’t have selected this as a back splash. I don’t think it particularly matches the look of our kitchen, but it’s not really a project we’d take on right now. It’s kind of unnecessary to change them out, since we’ve got our basement bathroom torn apart.

To make the coasters I just cut pieces of cork for the backing and glued them on. It’s easy if you have a cutting mat, straight edge and rotary cutter. They are so handy, do you ever use one? I mainly use it for fabric, but it works for lots of projects.

I cut the cork pieces to 3 1/4 inches square since the tiles are 4 inches square.

Then I used E-6000 glue to adhere the cork to the tile. This glue is strong and I use it for a ton of projects. A tin bead around the edge of the cork and some inside did the trick.

Once the glue is dry {which is pretty quick} you can tie up your coasters for a pretty hostess gift or just enjoy them on the patio. The whole project took about 10 minutes and was so easy, not to mention free, just the way I love my crafts. So on your next visit to the home improvement store, look for some clearance tile, and you can make a set of coasters for yourself.

Next time you visit, I’ll have a new blog. See you then!

Today I’m guest posting over at the Kickoff to Summer Series at Making Lemonade. Come read all kinds of summer tips and my ideas for how to garden on a budget. It’s easier than you think.

In the front of our house we are lucky enough to have a large covered porch. It’s part of what makes our 113-year old Colonial a charming home, and is a lovely spot to relax in the summer. You can find me out there blogging some days since the wireless reaches outside, which I love.

Even though our house is nicely painted and trimmed, this outdoor space not. It’s in desperate need for a face lift as you’ll see in the upcoming photos. When we bought this house we knew it was going to need updating, but with other things going on inside, we only got to the porch last summer.

One of my 2012 home goals was to fix it up. And actually we did that. Surprise, (some of) this upcoming makeover happened last year. I just haven’t had time to write about it until now.I mentioned in my review of my goals in January that we did get to do some updating on the porch and even promised a new one coming your way soon.

So I thought I’d start from the beginning and show you the (like many spaces in my house) terrible before photos.

This was actually the condition in which we bought this house. Most areas had peeling paint or exposed raw wood. There are even parts of the porch where the wood is broken.

Like all do it yourself-ers we thought we’d go at the peeling paint with some paint stripper and move on to refinishing. You can see in the top photo we had already taped and started. That was a laugh! We spend hours on one small section of this porch only to get nowhere. This was a roughly 2 x 6 section we used various types of strippers on and nothing worked.

In one part we counted 9 layers of paint. Probably 100-year old paint.

The front steps were also in terrible condition. If this is the first impression of our house, it says don’t come in. We needed to fix it pronto.

And I’d love to stain those planter boxes someday too.

The good thing about the porch is that is has beautiful trim and a wood ceiling. Although the trim needs cleaning, it is painted well. The ceiling is an amazing dark stain and we love it. We don’t have to do anything to either of those parts in our makeover.

Based on our failed stripping attempts and the amount of broken floor boards, we knew we needed to call in help. So we hired a local restoration company to come refinish and fix the porch. This was actually the first time we’ve done that. It can be very liberating to have someone else come do some grueling labor at your house, that’s for sure. But we knew it would work out great.

I took lots of photos along the way, so come back and see how we’ll spruce things up out there. Here is the porch makeover plan:

Remove all the paint on the porch

Remove paint on the concrete stairs

Repair broken wood

Repaint the porch and touch up any trim

Stain the flower boxes?

Get a rug

Repaint the chairs

Replace the cushions on the chairs

Get a coffee table of some kind

Add decorations like lanterns, pillows, plants and other accessories including outdoor lights

Today I have an update on our basement bathroom renovation after some weeks off for finishing classes and doing other projects, we made significant progress this past weekend. Before we could put down a sub floor, we needed to level the existing concrete foundation so we selected to use self-leveling concrete. We started a total makeover on the bathroom, which is the second in our house. Here is what it looked like before.

We tore apart the room down to the studs to update it and had to do some repair to our 113 year old foundation along the way. We also have to repair the heating vent too but first we wanted to tackle the floor so we could start rebuilding the room.

Today I’m here to show you how to use self leveling concrete to level the floor and smooth things out to prepare it for a sub floor. If you’ve never used self-leveling concrete, here is your how to. Follow along!

These are the tools we used:

Bag of self-leveling concrete {we used the bag in the photo above, from Home Depot}

5-gallon bucket for mixing

Water per the directions on the bag of concrete you purchase

Power corded drill for mixing

Concrete mixing paddle attachment for drill

Flat-sided trowel for smoothing

Old plastic cup for pouring the concrete out

Here is how to use self leveling concrete.

1. Prep your floor. First sweep and vacuum up all debris from the floor. You want a dust free surface. Next you prime the floor. There is a primer that is sold with the concrete that basically prepares the floor for use. It will dry shiny like this {look on the dark grey area}. This is an acrylic polymer, which you have to dilute, so use an old coffee can or the like.

The separate colors of the concrete of our floor are just from the channels that were dug for when the plumbing was put in. That’s why there are different types of concrete there to begin with. So you can imagine it’s all different levels and textures. Most concrete floors are one color and texture.

In our basement we had to remove 2x4s that separated the bathroom from the closet since we wanted to make sure the concrete worked where it needed to. We braced them to the ceiling and then cut off the very bottom of some to get out the footer. It just shows how you should remove any barriers in the space you plan to use the concrete.

2. Cover any openings in the floor. We got a piece of HVAC sheet metal to fit within the toilet opening and over the shower drain. Then we caulked around where the metal met the floor in case the concrete leveled up to those openings.

Tip Coat the caulk with Vaseline so nothing will stick to it.

3. Mix up the concrete. There’s no pictures for this since it’s best to be a two person job. Dan first filled a 5 gallon bucket with the water called for on the bag we purchased and I poured in the dry concrete powder cup by cup as he mixed with with the drill attachment. You need to keep mixing it as you pour in the dry mix, try to do it as fast as you can because the concrete begins to set as soon as it’s combined with water.

Tip This bucket will be very heavy so mix it in the spot where you will use it. We actually carried it down stairs, but I do not recommend this. It’s heavy!

4. Pour the concrete on the floor. You can do this in small enough areas so that you can get around it and so that you can smooth it out with the trowel. We used a large yogurt container to scoop it out of the bucket we mixed it in.

Start from the far corner of the room so you can work you way out the door. You only have a few minutes to trowel it, otherwise the marks you make will remain in the cement.

Then you just let it dry and wait.

Here is our finished floor. The concrete is definitely a different color from what was there. And it is really smooth to the touch. We let it dry for 24 hours, although you can walk on it after four hours according to the type we used.

You can see on the left of the photo, where it stopped where we poured it under the 2x4s and into the closet.

You can see some of the parts where we worked with the trowel too much as you can see the lines from it. But this shows you the smooth finish and color after it dries.

Here is the view from the closet next to the bathroom. Sorry for the dark photos, these areas of the basement don’t get much light.

And here is what it looked like up to the opening for the toilet. So you can see where the concrete goes and where it doesn’t.

And with that now we can put down the sub floor! Which means we are even closer to having a room that looks like a bathroom at least some how.

Wear gloves Concrete heats up which is how it sets, so it can burn your skin. Sleeves, long pants, and full shoes (not flip flops) are preferred

Don’t over work it Just pour it in place, smooth it out once, then leave it be. More smoothing will leave marks in the concrete.

Think it might be useful for a project in your home?

Happy Friday! What are you plans for this weekend? I’d like to get the last of our vegetable plants in the garden and hopefully get some color on my pasty white legs! This blogger needs a tan.I’ll also be doing some housekeeping here on Decor Adventures. I’ve mentioned before how I’m switching to WordPress in a matter of days, and so I’ve been spending time cleaning up my old posts, and trimming things down for the switch. Did you ever read through all of your old blog posts? It’s fun! And embarrassing

So you might notice some things that are missing, like archives and latest posts. I’m taking things down for the migration, so stick with me! Things will look and work better soon, I promise.

This switch has given me the chance to make a directory of all my posts so I can make sure to have them all in my project gallery and the like. I’m really looking forward to have a more organized blog where I can showcase more of my projects and provide you with a better resource for home and DIY inspiration. It’s the main reason why I’m switching over.

While my blog designer makes finishing touches on that part, I’ve been working with my graphic designer for a new logo. Now these people can be one in the same, however in my case I’m married to my graphic designer, so he gets to work for me and live with me.

I pay him with back massages

He and I sat down one night in his office to work on a new look for my logo, which will basically be my header, blog button, and social media profiles. Notice I was doing some blog reading at the same time?

I spent a lot of time looking around at blogs, business cards I got at Haven last year, and web sites in general, and decided I wanted to go with a simple, sophisticated design that will work for me in various ways.

First we selected some fonts that I liked to see how they might work together for a new look. I wanted a simple logo, without any graphic elements, so that the title of my blog itself would become the “look”. There are tons of resources out there for free fonts. When you download and install them, you can see what they look like in some sample words and go from there. Many are very similar! But fonts have their own personality. I ended up keeping the font of the word ‘decor’ in my title, but changed the ‘adventures’. After my graphic designer/husband arranged them in complimentary sizes and spacing, we played around with color.

I have two versions of the new logo so I can use it in different ways. What do you think?

Picking a color was next. This is hard! Color says so much about you and your personality, plus I wanted something that wasn’t going to be too trendy, but match the look I wanted. So we narrowed it down to a few.

Now the question is, which one do you think I picked?! Or perhaps I did a variation on one of these?

Have you ever designed a logo or look? How did you pick out fonts and colors?

P.S. By the way, hubs is available for logo design anytime. You can call him Dan and find him here. Give him a like!

Lighting is one of the most important elements inside the home and out. Not only does it help you with everyday tasks, and can set the mood for a dinner party on the patio or an hour with your favorite book. Like hardware on furniture or cabinets, lighting can be the jewelery of your space. Think of a photo of a room you love. Is it lit well? You can thank the lighting for that. Today I wanted to show you some lighting ideas for your home.

Recently we’ve been doing some lighting upgrades for our home and have spent countless hours in stores and online looking for fixtures of different types. When Golden Age USA asked if I would offer a review of their lightning collections, I was happy to. I had not heard of the company before, but was glad to find them. They have the largest selection of lights for just about every space in your home. In addition they sell rugs, mirrors and other home decor items, but the lighting selection is quite extensive.

Here are some chandeliers from their contemporary line. I notice some of these from photos that I pin! Did you ever see a light and wonder where you could get it? Golden Age USA might be your answer.

They can also make a chandelier custom to your space in any and you can view items within your budget by sorting them by price, type or material. This turquoise chandelier is make of Italian Murano glass.

Since we are renovating bathrooms, wall sconces are on the top of my shopping list these days. There are many options for a variety of bathroom styles in a range of prices, many under $50. I could see these lights even in a dining room, hallway or bedroom.

Pendant lights are a modern alternative to builder grade flush mount lights and come in a variety of colors, shapes, and styles.

And with summer here, you might be thinking of some new lights for your deck, garden or patio. Golden Age USA offers outdoor wall lights, ceiling mounts, and deck lanterns. I think I may have to pick up some of these for our backyard since we have a deck and landscape makeover going on this year. I can’t wait to show you that project.

Do you do your lighting shopping online? You may want to. Online retailers offer the easy of narrowing your search to just the items you are looking for, sometimes have free shipping, and a plethora of items you will not find in stores. I enjoy finding options for my home improvement needs online, then I know where to go when I need to buy something.

Golden Age USA can be found online here, as well as on Facebook and Twitter.

Hello friends. I hope you had a nice Mother’s Day weekend. My sister was in town and with her husband, we spent a few days house hunting with them. It’s so fun to go see what kinds of homes are out there. Do you like house hunting? Hopefully they will find a good one and then I get to help decorate, which will be really great.

What better project for a new homeowner then some tips on decorating your home fast. I’m talking lightning fast. Today I’m participating in Craft Lightning. It’s a round up by The Country Chic Cottage and 30 Minute Crafts of lots of fun crafts you can complete in 15 minutes or less. What could be better besides quick, creative projects you can do to decorate your home inside or out in just a few moments? My ideas was to frame travel memorabilia. Here is how you can do it.

One way I love to change up my home decor for the season is to frame different things for the wall galleries we have in our spaces. If it’s with photos, maps, a boarding pass, postcard or something else that you picked up on your travels, the artwork takes on the life of its own once you put it in a frame. Plus it’s a lovely way to remember those special moments you had while relaxing with friends or families. Here the two simple items you need for your 15 minute craft.

Empty frames – I usually get mine at the thrift stores or flea markets. It doesn’t matter the color since you can always paint them, but look for glass and hanging hardware. That’s a bonus and you can expect to pay around $5 each.

Travel mementos – Try postcards, letters, tickets stubs, photos or maps. Something that reminds you of your special trip is good, even a scarf you picked up or an interesting napkin from a hotel might look neat.

That’s it! Plus any framing hardware you might need if it didn’t come on the frame.

First, prep your frame. This can include cleaning the glass, and painting the frame if needed. If you want to use photo mats, here is a how to. Or if you want to fix frames or see different ways to use them, here are some ideas.

Next prep and put in your mementos. I found these old stamps on etsy at Anything Goes Here that I ended up framing for our living room. I just glued them on to a grey piece of craft paper for the backing then put them in the frame and hung it up.

They hang next to our large world map and a map of the Bahamas where we went on our honeymoon, and that reminds me of the different trips we’ve taken. I thought they would make the perfect addition to the travel wall and I love the story they tell. Who knows where they have been?

I made two frames of the stamps, the other group was different colors, so they add a bright touch to the neutral space.

Another travel memento I framed was this envelope from when my husband visited France with friends while we were dating. He mailed it from the Eiffel Tower so it’s has that on the postmark. Did you know there is a small post office right in the base of the tower where you can send letters?

And just like that in 15 minutes you have yourself a nice reminder of your travel adventures. I’m sure you have some frames and some trinkets to hang up. Ready, set, craft!

So, big news, I am done with graduate school classes, yahoo! Now when I say that to someone they ask me when I’m going to graduate. And the answer to that is… in about a year or so? You probably know I am in a PhD program and about a week ago I finished all my coursework requirements and only have one exam and one paper left to finish for the semester. This means I never, ever EVER have to go to class again Believe me I’m super happy about this. But the graduation is a ways off since now I write my dissertation. That will take about a year if I’m lucky.

But for now I have lots more time for projects and fun around the house. So why not start things off right away with some painted furniture makeovers that I did with some free paint.

A few weekends go Ace Hardware had Free Paint Saturday, where they have out samples of Clark + Kensington in the form of flat enamel quarts. I was looking forward to trying a new color and wanted to learn more about this {new to me} paint, so I picked up Deep Amazon.

The pieces I had in mind to redo were those typical storage cubes that they sell at Target and similar places. You can get them with doors, drawers, or shelves. I got these about 13 years ago when I lived in my own apartment and wanted versatile storage but I’ve tired of their brown wood color and wanted to liven them up.

First I lightly sanded them with a block sander and taped off the insides so I didn’t have to paint all of the sides where the door would be.

Then I used my trusty Zinsser oil-based primer.

This is how you know you need to use oil-based primer on furniture that is not raw wood, or a surface where you can’t determine what it’s been covered with. Because latex primer, even kinds that say they stick to glossy surfaces don’t adhere to the surface of the object you are painting. This is what will it do if you use latex, it bubbles away from the surface and doesn’t stick.

So go with the oil-based stuff, don your plastic gloves and paint outside. It will save you tons of furniture makeover heartaches.

These pieces were done in the basement before it was warm enough to paint them outside. Believe me, it does stink up the house, so wear a respirator and send your family out for the afternoon.

I could have gotten tinted primer for this, and should have looking back, but I wasn’t up for spending the money and didn’t want to take another trip to the hardware store, so white it was. After it was done, on went the Deep Amazon.

I liked the texture of this paint definitely, but my project needed 3-4 coats. I bet that’s probably not the case on walls, or if you use tinted primer, so this took a little longer than I expected.

I actually did put 2 thin coats of clear polycrylic on top of this paint, even though it was enamel, just because it was flat and I knew I’d be putting dishes on and off of it often. I bet the poly could be skipped if you got a satin or glossier finish.

I simply love the color and wish I had more to paint other items this deep green. It’s just the pop the dining room needed.

These replaced the white bookshelves that used to be in that space. Now I can toss items in the drawers and forget about them. Plus they store more things than the old shelves. A win, win, win!

Did you get to pick up any paint lately? Try out any fun colors?
