It’s graduation week here in Phoenix. Several wonderful young ladies we know will be participating in this rite of passage. We wanted to acknowledge their accomplishments without breaking the bank.

I almost hesitated to share this craft because it’s SO easy and inexpensive. But we all like that right?

I picked up a 6 pack of girls elastic headbands at the Dollar Store.

I found various flower, butterfly and bird clips at the hobby supply store. (Tip: check the sewing, scrapbook and t shirt appliqué sections in addition to the floral department. Use a coupon and they will total around 60 cents each.)

Now don’t strain yourself on this next part.

Open the clip and attach it to the reinforced section of the headband. It’s easier to see in person as there is a slightly thick bump.

Attach the bookmark it to a book and Voila~ you’re done!

I scoured the thrift store for pretty hardbacks and also found some favorite paperback classics in the Target dollar section.

Just for fun we also hid some money amongst the pages, but all in all a nice gift which can be made for under $3.00.

My in-laws are arriving for a visit on Thursday. Now I know that is a statement that strikes a bit of fear into many wives.

I am blessed in that Pop Gunn and Grammy Jane are FANTASTIC people. I’ve even been encouraging Mr. Décor to find a job so that we can live closer to them.

But still, a cleaning frenzy has commenced. Light fixtures dusted, mattresses turned, walls and windows washed.

You know, deep cleaning.

Yet, even after all the effort the house felt a little….dingy.

A closer look revealed smudged corners.

I guess that is to be expected in a house full of kids and dogs. So the paint came out and touch up painting commenced. After four hours it did look so much better.

But something still wasn’t quite right….

The dinge remained.

So I rented a steam cleaner and cleaned the carpets. Even though I have a fantastic Dyson vacuum cleaner which I use VERY regularly, the hidden dirt was revealed for all the eye to see:

Which got me thinking. Our society puts a lot of focus on appearance~ on having a good looking outside.

But mom was right, it is the deep inside, that is seen by the One, that truly matters.

A Succulent Wreath For Summer

Phoenix has now began its rapid ascent towards summer.

Which meant that my viola and alyssum filled pots of spring wreath needed an update that could withstand 115+ degree temperatures.

I opted to go with faux succulents found at Joann’s because WOW do they look real!

I snipped off individual pieces with wire cutters.

Then pushed them into the still dirt filled pots.

While I don’t love it as much as the live flower filled pots it will do for the long, hot Phoenician summer.

Would you use faux succulents in decorating?

Blooming Beautiful Gift for Just $3.00

Oh what a busy week! I am knee deep in thorough house cleaning. Our home was a bit neglected while I was in school. Touch up painting is on the menu for today. I am also trying to get the back patio in shape as we have guests coming for the weekend and then my in laws will arrive for a visit later next week.

Next week is also the last week of school in Arizona. I wanted to make sure I had a thank you gift for Sweet Boy’s teacher. It would also work as a housewarming or birthday gift and perhaps as a special baby or bridal shower party favor.

I found this small enamel bucket in the dollar section at Target. There were various types of flowers in red, yellow and green buckets but I thought the “Forget~ Me~ Nots” were quite appropriate. As you can see it cost a whopping $3. (You can cover the price tag with a flower sticker or just ink it out with a sharpie.)

I took a peek at Pinterest for “Teacher Appreciation” free printables and spied several lovely candidates.

After printing out the PDF download I quickly took a large, square piece of white tulle I had on hand and wrapped up the blue bucket securing it closed with polka dotted ribbon I had purchased at a garage sale several years ago. It was then topped with the tag. (Note: I was a bit more careful cutting out the actual tag used, which of course had Sweet Boy’s given name, not available for blog viewing. :)

If there are any of these buckets left when the dollar section bins soon go on clearance I will select a few for my quick and easy gift closet as packets of seeds can be stowed for a year or so.

House Crush: Jenna Lyons

If you follow Décor To Adore on Facebook or Twitter you may have, in the past, read how much I loved Jenna Lyons Park Slope home (128 Garfield Place in Brooklyn) when it was featured in the November 2012 of Lonny Magazine.

I had first seen her home in the November 2008 issue of Domino Magazine. (Sigh, I STILL miss the monthly version of the magazine.) This was followed up by a feature in the September 2009 of Britian’s Livingetc magazine as well as a feature in the September 2011 issue of British Vogue. Some wondered “Was it worthy of all that coverage?” I believe so as Ms. Lyons was constantly creating new vignettes within in her home.

The home was purchased by Lyons and her now ex husband in 2004. Many mourned when it was announced that the home had been sold to Vincent Martin of Depeche Mode in late 2012 for well above asking price by Sotherby’s. But I see it as an opportunity for Ms. Lyons to now have a fresh blank canvas in which to create something fabulously new.

But the space deserves one last look and I have collected my favorite images from the different publications mentioned above for this one post.

This is the interior entry of the Victorian gem which dates back to the 1880’s. The arched door and dentil molding is simply magnificent.

Many people often shy away from older homes thinking that they have to fill the space with furniture from the same era. But one can easily see by the following images that is not the case. The classic architecture was mixed with modern furnishings.

My belief has always been if you start with good bones in a space anything will look good.

The living room was done in neutrals with the exception of a bright yellow sofa. Happy, happy.

The formal dining space was separated by a magnificent archway. I adore the twin fireplaces.

If you were wishing you could see into the cabinet in the previous image here you are. I like that simple dishes and pitchers, as well as books, were arranged together.

The artwork could easily be recreated.

The chandeliers were duplicates which I think is a perfect solution to ease the eye in transitioning between two spaces.

I adore the brass helmet lamp.

The kitchen, although a small size, was remodeled by Levenson McDavid Architects and quite functional. I actually don’t mind the silver duct work showing.

This shot includes a glimpse of the backyard.

A blooming dogwood tree in the backyard is the epitome of spring in New York.

The bedroom space featured dark walls and white linens.

If you’ve ever hesitated to paint out fantastic trim this shot shows that it can be quite stunning.

The attached bath featured a herringbone floor, claw foot tub and brass plumbing fixtures.

This shot reminds me a bit of Kelly Wearstler.

A happy childs room.

I enjoy an office that looks like actual work gets done.

For those of you who perhaps aren’t aware of what Jenna Lyons job is, I have to share her dream of a closet.

Oh the shoes….

Jenna Lyons is the creative director for J. Crew.

Her personal fashion style is pretty fabulous too. She has been featured in several fashion magazines, including Glamour and has received tons of pins on Pinterest.

I can’t wait to see her new space. It was rumored that she was living HERE, but this apartment has now also been sold.

Mother’s Day 2013

Here is what I have learned about being a mother:

For as much as we hope, plan and of course pray for our children there will come a day when they will do exactly as they please. There is a strong possibility their choices may not coincide with the dreams we have had for them.

You may want to bury your head in the sand against this thought, but perhaps if for one minute you think about the moments you turned your parents hair gray or when your kids turned yours then you know I speak the truth.

Recently, I spent the day with my daughter. She ran up to hug me and my first words to greet her outstretched arms were “That had better be fake!” She said “Mom, it’s your mother’s day gift. Don’t you love it?” Her smiling eyes gave her away.

Now before you get up on tattoo supporting soapbox let me intercept you.

When our girl entered college and we moved her into a condo we made the following deal:

We will financially support you (IE tuition, books, rent, utilities) if you:

Do not use illegal substances (no exceptions)

Maintain a good GPA

Get a part time job for clothing, gas money, etc.

Do not drink excessively

Do not engage in promiscuous behavior (IE bringing home strangers/shacking up with boyfriends, etc .)

Do not smoke

Do not get a tattoo

Why we said this:

The last four requests we as parents felt that such life decisions should be made by a self supporting adult. Smoking and excessive drinking are bad for your health. We’ve lost love ones to lung cancer and alcohol related diseases. Both vices can also be VERY expensive, as are good tattoos~ which yes, can be a work of art.

We felt that if our children could afford to purchase these things or make the adult decision to live with someone then they were adult enough to pay their own way.

Since we live in America you are welcome to disagree with our parenting philosophy. You are also welcome to support our kids. (hee hee)

Ok, so back to the tattoo.

It was fake.

But here’s the thing…I wouldn’t put it past her.

In the early years of her life I would often cradle her in my arms and think wonderful things for her:

She will join cotillion and become a debutante.

She will go to a fabulous university and join a sorority.

The fact is I thought and wished these things for her because deep down I had wanted and never had them myself.

You know what happened right?

She wanted none of it.

She is quiet, even shy. She likes to stay close to home. She is free spirit who is a deep thinker, wonderful writer, and talented fashion designer. When she comes into her own full self I imagine that the world will have to hold on to its pants.

I recently had a conversation with a friend whose young adult child had made a life choice she wasn’t expecting…had dreamed of…planned for… or even expected. She was riddled with sorrow and then guilt for being sorrowful.

I told her that it was ok. That she needed to take time to grieve the loss of the dream of the life SHE had had for her child. She wasn’t going to love them any less, she just needed to adjust to a new life, a new dream.

Just like that, a weight was taken from her. She said she hadn’t thought of it that way.

I told her that life, regarding my children, had gotten immensely easier for me since I had accepted that they would be their own person.

Sure I still have dreams.

I hope to be a mother in law someday.

I hope to sit in a rocking chair with several grandchildren.

But ultimately I have to raise them the best I can and then let them go.

It won’t stop me from hoping and praying that they’ll make good decisions.

I can’t help think but God had this all figured out a long time ago.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. ~ Galatians 5:22-26

The Great Gatsby

Yesterday I finished my last class of the spring semester and have two glorious weeks before the summer semester starts. Although I am smack dab in the middle of designing an entire house for truly lovely clients I took today off. The Fashionista has to work on Sunday so she wanted to celebrate Mother’s Day today with me.

Just how will we spend it? At the movies. We’ve been waiting months for the theatrical version of “The Great Gatsby”. It is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s third book, a 20th century literary classic beloved by both of us.

I am approaching this remake with a bit of trepidation. In my mind there will always be only one Jay Gatsby... my beloved Robert Redford who starred in the 1974 classic.

I imagine that my feelings are a bit like Gatsby himself which his next door neighbor Nick sums up:

"No amount of fire could challenge the fairytale he had stored up in his heart."

But I am willing to give Leo DiCaprio as Gatsby a chance. After all, for his long anticipated encounter with first love Daisy, he fills Nick’s cottage with abundant floral bouquets and macarons.

However I am thrilled with the casting of Carey Mulligan. She captures the essence of Daisy Buchanan completely. If you haven’t seen her Oscar nominated role in “An Education” put it on your must watch list at once.

I of course am eager to view the film sets which were created by Oscar winner Catherine Martin who also happens to be the wife of the film’s director, Baz Luhrmann.

The movie was filmed primarily in Sydney, Australia and the sets, to include Jay Gatsby’s ballroom, capture the Art Deco opulence of the 1920’s.

The story’s narrator, Nick Carraway, is played by Tobey Macguire.

Nick lives in a small cottage next door to Gatsby. Dreamy sigh.

The interior of the cottage is done in an Arts and Crafts style. Long time readers might remember from this post that it’s a favorite of mine.

Tom and Daisy Buchanan’s red brick mansion.

It has been said that the home was partly inspired by Old Westbury Gardens on Long Island. I think so.

The Buchanan set features Hollywood Regency inspired interiors as vibrant as Daisy herself.

Oh that chandelier!

A confrontation occurs in a room at the Plaza hotel.

Myrtle Wilson (Tom Buchanan’s mistress) is played by Isla Fisher. Myrtle’s city love nest is quaint 1920’s.

Of course we must cover the fashions. The costume designer was also Catherine Martin. She collaborated with Miuccia Prada who turned to her family’s design archives to come up with 40 background dresses, as well as a few of Daisy’s costumes.

Brooks Brothers dressed the men.

The French company Solstiss created all the lace.

Dreamy confection.

I can’t even imagine how heavy this gown was to wear, but it is stunning!

Nick Calloway’s girlfriend, Jordan Baker (played by Elizabeth Debicki, who reminds me of Emily Blunt) sure knows how to dress to impress.

There is also sumptuous jewelry. A collaboration was formed with Tiffany’s to use archival pieces, as well as create new pieces, for the film. Tiffany’s was selected in large part due to that F. Scott Fitzgerald was a well known customer.

Oh just look at all those diamonds and pearls!

If that is not enough fashion, this months issue of Vogue also features a Gatsby themed spread.

I would wear this entire outfit EVERYWHERE!

One can always hope for a happy ending….

A Simply Sweet Gift for Under $5.00

This sweet pot of roses is perfect for mom’s, teachers, or even happy new homeowners.

Design clients that I previously worked with several years ago moved into a new home and called me again to help with the décor. I didn’t want to arrive empty handed and was pressed for time so I grabbed a sweet smelling pot of miniature roses for $4.99 at the supermarket.

First things first. Remove the orange plastic wrapping.

You can use the orange plastic as a template to cut a square of burlap or other darling fabric. I used twine to tie it up.

I jazzed up a plain manila tag with a punch paper heart, paper doily, Home Sweet Home printable and a miniature pom pom made quickly with red bakers twine.

Just wrap a fork several times with twine. Take a second short piece of twine and thread it through the center tine of the fork and tie a tight knot. Cut the loops and fluff your pom.

A happy bit of homemade!

Mother’s Day Tablescape Ideas

My dear friend Liz from Rose Vignette’s recently invited me to a Ladies Tea held at her church. It was truly a wonderfully uplifting and inspiring event. She told me that there would be over 40 tables each decorated with a different theme so I arrived early with my camera.

This table was simply decorated with garden store daisies, a quick and inexpensive centerpiece. The take away gift featured packets of seeds showcased on place card holders. Brilliant!

Continuing a garden theme was a bird cage filled with flowers. An addition of some fine feathers friends completes the scene.

The hostess of the table took a six pack planting mix of flowers and cut them apart. She then wrapped tissue paper around each plastic planter and secured it with a ribbon. A clever gift for less than 40 cents a person!

For the little girl in all of us.

This display appealed to the literary lover in me.

I adored this homage to family.

Darling paper bag gifts were hung on miniature mannequin forms.

This table combined several of the above elements into one charming tablescape.

Vintage jello molds were filled with pampering presents.

Walking on sunshine.

A single rose at each setting.

I loved the color palette used at this table. The hostess made a lovely photo album for each of her guests.

Classic black and white. Oooh la la!

Pretty pink and beautiful butterflies.

Blue and white is always right. Simple white supermarket bouquets are nestled in various vases.

Blissful burlap.

Vintage hats are very pretty. Almost anything loved by mom can be made into a centerpiece.

I made my way back to the table where I was seated. In my opinion it was truly the prettiest.

Lovely Homer Laughlin teacups.

Lunch was absolutely delicious. The deacons of the church sweetly tended to our every whim. At a Mother’s Day luncheon this role could be filled by devoted husbands and children.

Liz ~ the kindness and friendship that you shared truly filled my cup. Thank you!

Over the course of my lifetime I have lived in some fairly interesting places to include the frozen tundra of Alaska and rather third world Crete. While living in each location there was something that I learned to love about it and I made the most of my time there.

I’ve now lived in the desert for eight years.

On Tuesday I had a monsoon sized meltdown.

Now it might have been a bit of sleep deprivation coupled with the temperature gauge hitting 100 degrees before May had even arrived or perhaps it was the thick layer of dust that covered every surface even though I had dusted the day before. What I know for sure is what set it off… it was the scorpion scurrying across the tile towards Sweet Boys bathroom.

I began by taking my aggression out on that nasty arachnid with a baseball bat I keep in a corner for such visitors.

I chanted “I hate you! I hate you! I hate you!” with each whack of the bat.

Going on about my afternoon in a cranky manner I began lugging water all the way from the kitchen to the front door to water my potted roses that the heat was trying to kill because some IDIOT contractor/plumber/architect had put the water spigot on the other side of the house.

I didn’t bother to consider that some people have to walk for miles for water.

No, I was intent on having a pity party for one. So I began to mentally list everything I hated about the desert.

I remember reading that when artist Georgia O’Keefe first set foot in the New Mexico desert she felt an overwhelming sense of peace, knowing she was at last home … my first instinct was to scratch my head and wonder why.

I think some people are desert people.

Some are not.

It’s true that I feel most at peace when I am walking here:

Just when my tantrum was on the verge of being out of control I suddenly stopped and began to think about the Israelites who roamed the desert for 40 years. Some never reached the promise land.

So I prayed a simple prayer.

“Lord, let me love it or let me leave it.”

My God is an awesome God. By laying everything at His feet I know all things will work together for a glorious good.

Nothing is too big or too small for Him.

There may be a change of my surroundings.

There may be a change in me.

Time will tell.

Either way, it will be ok.

A Tablescape Inspired by Van Gogh’s Irises

Happy Friday everyone! I have good news. After 6 long weeks working away from home I will be picking up Mr. Décor at the airport this morning. I also passed my Art History exam/class with flying colors.

I think this calls for a celebration. Queue Kool and the Gang.

Over a decade ago I had the wonderful opportunity to tour the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. It was there that instead of merely thinking about Vincent in terms of his mental illness I began to look at him as a gifted artist.

One of my favorite paintings he created is entitled “Still Life with Irises” in 1890. This oil on canvas is very similar to his more famous “Sunflower” series of paintings but I like it even better.

In the still life Vincent used a common confit pot as a vase and filled it with lush blue irises that grow wild in France. Much like these that were shown on the Metis blog.

Alas I could not find any blue irises but I did spy a lovely bouquet of blue lilies ~ one of my favorite flowers.

I didn’t have a solid yellow cloth either but I did have a lovely white and yellow damask set I purchased years ago at a German flea market. It seemed apropos to use this for Mr. Décor’s homecoming as both the tablecloth and napkins bear his initials.

Having just under 15 minutes to set and photograph the table it was a very simple setting.

Wanting a bit more blue on the table and desiring candlelight I nestled white votives in clear plastic holders into a few of our Polish pottery teacups also purchased while living in Europe.

Each setting was quite simple, but for us a lovely memory to look at.

I have just one more class to get through before I have two glorious weeks off. How are your spending your weekend?

My dear friends,

Today is a wonderfully sweet holiday in France. A day that typically one gives a nosegay of lily of the valley to those they love.

Today was also the day scheduled for the premiere of Rêve. As with many new ventures there have been time consuming creaks to work out and productions issues. I liken it to building a house.

We are very close to finishing and releasing the book.

It will be SO worth the wait.

For those of you who have pre purchased Rêve I humbly ask for your forgiveness and patience on the delay.

Pick Before You Click

I try to be pretty strict with myself when it comes to the internet. Before getting lost in Pinterest or immersing myself in blogs I ask myself “Is my homework done?” “Can a load of laundry be started” “What is for dinner” …. you get the idea. I try to use fun computer time as a treat or reward. But still I am guilty of spending two hours online instead of just one all too often.

Earlier this week Ann Voskamp shared this wonderful printable that takes it even a step further for me.

I printed it out and hung it next to my computer to be a soft and sweet reminder to keep my focus on what is truly important.

Today I will be praying for others as I’d like to be prayed for.

Ways To Use Pretty Wrapping Paper

I am heading into finals week. But let’s think about happier things shall we?

Some wrapping paper is so lovely is deserves to be framed.

I am a wrapping paper hoarder. It’s true. But my collection has grown so large that I need to start using it.

I could see myself wallpapering a closet with scraps.

While lining the back of a bookcase isn’t a new idea, I think using a pair to create an altar is simply fabulous!

An even quicker project is to line a cart or tray with paper.

I’ve done just one simple project this past week. I lined the top of the kitchen island drawer with paper the Fashionista had found for me several months ago. (Avion from Paper Source.)

You probably remember when I painted the island last fall.

At the time I had also ripped out the stained and tattered faux velvet drawer liner and there it sat until the day I could look at no longer.

There was enough of a gap under the wooden slats that I simply slid the paper underneath.

I didn’t even bother tacking the edges down.

The weight from our everyday napkins was enough.

I can’t wait until I have time for a few more projects. But this weekend I have … a boy scout fundraiser, a soccer game, church luncheon and of course trying desperately to get Rêve out on time for the May 1st release date. Problems keep abounding with production. There is a chance it may be delayed. But I am trying to stay positive.

I have a huge final in each of my two art history classes. One this Friday and the other on Monday. My photography class at the local community college will end on May 9th. Then I will have ten glorious days before the summer session begins at ASU.

I can’t wait, projects are lined up!

I spent the weekend going through over 4800+ images of France. I’m a bit cross eyed. Today I must finish selecting and editing the final images for Rêve, make a trip to the Scout store for Sweet Boy’s new uniform and take a large essay exam. It sounds like a Calgon take me away to Paris day. :)

It is with good reason that Paris is known as the “City of Light”.

Rêve has managed to capture light trails resembling diamonds and create articles of after dark.

A Hard Week

Oh it has been a hard week for our country.

The terrible explosion in tiny West, Texas.

I remembered how I once drove through there while living in Dallas. Such hardworking, lovely salt of the earth people. My prayers have been deep and often for this community.

Boston. My heart just breaks even writing that single word.

Boston was personal for me. So very real. I heard about the horror immediately after and my heart began to pound.

My cousin, who is a young Opera singer in Boston, had been planning to attend. Phones lines were jammed. I quickly thought to instant message her on Facebook. The two seconds that it took her to respond seemed like two years. Tremendous relief poured through me as she said she was fine. She had gotten called into her other job that morning and had to forgo attending.

Boston was also personal for me in that Sweet Boy was once an innocent 8 year old boy just like Martin Richard.

I continue to pray for his mother, Denise Martin, his 7 year old sister Jane, and the families of Krystle Campbell, and Lingzi Lu’s parents ~ as she was their only child.

So many suffered injuries.

I also can’t help think about the men who did this.

(I agree with Anderson Cooper in not writing or speaking their names. Mr. Cooper, since the Sandy Hook tragedy, believes that only the victim’s should be given media recognition. There should be no thrill for terrorists and murderers seeking 15 minutes of fame. I support this.)

But I am praying for the man who was captured. I am praying for their families.

Yes, I am.

Does this make me insensitive? Many might think so. But let me share a story.

My father’s life was horrifically taken when he was just 21 years old. My mother, his wife, was three months pregnant with me.

Hunter S. Thompson once wrote:

Mr. Thompson you are wrong.

For every father/daughter dance and event that occurred when I was a child ~ I missed having a father.

When I really needed a dad’s wise advice or loving embrace ~ I missed having a father.

When I was dressed all in white, a veil covering my face ~ I missed having a father.

When I had my first child ~ I missed having a father.

When I watched my husband giving driving lessons to my daughter ~ I missed having a father.

When it’s grandparents day at school and the chair is empty ~ my kids miss having a grandfather.

I have missed my father for 45 years. I will most likely continue to miss him for many more.

But I still pray for the men who killed him.

How? Why?

Because I find comfort in my Heavenly Father. He will never leave. He will never let me down. I praise God that I know this.

So yes, I pray for those that might be suffering. I pray for those who may not know about God’s love.

Many have asked “Where was God this week?”

Sometimes accidents, like in West, Texas, happen. There may have been a small human error, there might have been faulty man made equipment. We don’t know yet. We can only pray and send aid to those who have suffered.

In regards to Boston, we must remember that we are all given free will in this life. We make our decisions. Because God gave us the ability to choose. He gave us free will stemming from Eve’s choice of the apple.

There will always be people who make the wrong choice ~ a bad decision. When that happens God’s heart breaks along with ours.

But here is where I saw God and goodness this week:

Fifteen active duty soldiers from the Massachusetts National Guard walked/ran the marathon on Monday. They wore full gear and a pack that added 40 pounds of extra weight. They did this to honor their fallen comrades and to raise funds for charity.

I cannot even begin to imagine their exhaustion after completing the 26 miles.

But shortly after crossing the finish line these same soldiers were forcefully tearing through rubble and debris and providing aid to victims.

Then there is Carlos Arredondo who came to the race to support the soldier that honored his son, Lance Cpl. Alexander Arredondo, who died in the Iraq war. Immediately after the blast Arredondo began offering aid to victims. It is quite probable that by holding the main artery of Jeff Bauman’s leg he saved his life.

Jeff Bauman is also a hero. When he awoke from unconsciousness he immediately asked for a pen and paper and provided the FBI with the description of a man wearing a white ball cap. This of course aided the search efforts of video footage and led to arrests.

For both the towns of Boston and West I think about all the first responders. While hundreds were running away from danger they ran toward it.

Many of those who died in West, Texas were first responders.

“There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends.” John 15:13

There are hundreds of stories of heroism and bravery. My Boston cousin heard about the 1000’s who were displaced after the bombing, unable to get to their hotels, etc. She posted that her apartment was open. Many, many other Bostonians did the same.

I Got A Hair Cut!

Back in March I wrote a post on 2013 spring hair trends and shared that I hadn’t had a decent haircut in months. It had been almost a year since I had gotten any sort of highlights. This was due to my former hairdresser moving away a year ago. I’ve been looking for her replacement ever since. (Isn’t it so hard to find a good one????)

My friend Louise works as an esthetician at the Elizabeth Arden salon (Litchfield Park, AZ) and she said I should see Tiffany. I hemmed. I hawed. Then I finally grew sick of looking like Cousin It and made an appointment.

My hair had been past my shoulders and full of split ends. As summer is swiftly approaching here in Phoenix I wanted something fairly short.

I requested highlights close to my natural color as I am not a personal fan of the “oh you have highlights” look. It hurts too much once they start to grow out. :). Tiffany delivered. I’m happy.

As for the shirt~ the Fashionista always gives me a gift on her birthday. (Awwww!) She found it in the loungewear section at Anthro. I’ve worn it with red shorts and also blue jeans. It’s so soft and got a ton of compliments.

Once my ‘do gets a bit longer I am going to try and set it in hot rollers for a soft wave.

Someone You Know

Years ago when I was a struggling single parent I worked in a family practice office. Pharmaceutical representatives would often bring by wonderful food such as big breakfasts and lavish lunches... it was a tool they used to build relationships with the doctor's. Afterwards I would always offer to clean up "the mess". The other members of the staff thought I was SO great. But truthfully I had an ulterior motive. I did not want that food ending up in the trash. I couldn't let that food end up in the trash. I would wrap everything up and take it home. Sometimes that food was the only food in my refridgerator. My daughter never went hungry. But she remembers that there were some nights I would sit down to dinner with her and eat nothing myself.

I am still friends with some of the people I worked with in that office. Years later when I told this story they couldn't believe it. They were completely aghast that someone so close to them had been hungry.

Today I sometimes joke that I could well afford to miss a meal. But I haven't forgotten. So I pay it forward. hunger relief

Our family volunteers regularly to help pack food boxes at our church. Mr. Decor and Sweet Boy always participate in the B.S.A. event Scouting For Food. We never see who gets the food but it doesn't matter. It may very well be someone we know. In this economy of unemployment the numbers of the hungry continue to rise. Fighting Hunger Together

There are quite a few great organizations in Phoenix that help the hungry such as St. Mary's Food Bank and Feed My Starving Children. It is easy to find similar organizations in your area. Wal Mart is currently working with Feeding America to focus on reducing hunger here in America. The Fighting Hunger initiative will deliver 3 million dollars in grants to local food banks between April1-30th. You can go online and cast a vote for your local food bank. Vote and volunteer to fight hunger this spring with Walmart

Bonjour mes amis! (hello my friends)

In just two short weeks Rêve the book will be launched on May 1st. There is still a bit of editing and sorting to be done. Time is of the essence and of course there seems to be a lack of it. :) For the next two weeks I will be giving you Parisian sneak peeks a few times a week. Keep in mind that all the pictures that will be shared are what Andrea and I consider “the throw aways” (Yes, including this stunning one today.) Which means that the images, along with the articles, that will appear in Rêve are even MORE spectacular.

Love is many things…

If you asked 10 people what makes a good marriage you would probably get 10 completely different answers.

But here is my 2 cents told via Lego’s.

Back in December when I created “the elf on a shelf” (part one, part two) for my sweetheart I received some comments via email along the lines of :

“Well that’s nice and just what is he doing for you?”

Here’s the thing~ there is an idea that marriage is 50/50 all of the time. But that is not reality.

December is a hard month for my husband. So I give 110% and carry him through.

Right now I am completely exhausted by my responsibilities with family, school, work, Reve the magazine, blah, blah, blah. I wasn’t expecting much help from Mr. Décor as he left on a long business trip at the end of March. But on April 1st I received a text message from him.

Inside the shoe I found a Lego with a message typed on a small strip of paper.

On April 2nd I received another message from my friend Jackie.

The 3rd of April’s message came all the way from Hawaii via my sweet foster sister Cynthia.

Of course by day 2 I knew what the next message would say. But it was such fun for me to see who would send the text and guess where the next clue might be. (Although I didn’t spoil it by actively looking.)

Sometimes I had to get a step ladder to reach the daily Lego. Like when it was high up inside the Fashionista’s childhood doll house. But I didn’t mind.

Yes, overall it’s simple gift. But it took some thought and planning. The result was every single day I felt SO loved and treasured. I was sort of sad when April 11th arrived because I knew the daily Lego would end.

But the love, that didn’t end.

The pile of Lego’s sits on my nightstand. I can’t imagine I will move it anytime soon.

I still feel SO special.

But here is the best part. Every single person who was “in on it” and sent me a text, I think that they felt really special to be a part of it. The love was shared.

That’s the thing about love. Even little doses can do great things.

New Faucet for the Fashionista's Bathroom

The DIY of our daughters bathroom is slowly coming along. We recently installed a new faucet.

You saw the "before" shot of her bathroom. It was an 80's nightmare ~ a cracked vanity countertop, old cabinets, groovy lighting fixtures and a dated chrome and brass faucet.

After ordering a new vanity countertop we did not want to reinstall the old leaky faucet. Thankfully Moen provided us with a wide set chrome faucet from their Boardwalk line.

Truly the hardest part of the entire job was cleaning everything out from underneath the sink so we could remove the old plumbing and install the new.

Now ready to tackle the job we first and foremost shut off the water supply. This is by far the most important step. An instruction booklet was included with the faucet and it was easy to understand. The job required simple tools that we already had on hand. We unscrewed the old faucet fairly easily using an adjustable wrench. The new faucet was installed just as swiftly.

Fifteen years ago today I promised my sweetheart that

I would be patient and kind

I wouldn’t envy or boast

I wouldn’t be easily angered or keep a record of wrong doings

I would not delight in evil but would rejoice in the truth

I would protect, trust, hope, and persevere.

He made the same promises to me.

Over the years, on occasion, we both failed to live up to one promise or another.

Yes, it’s true.

But thankfully, LOVE NEVER FAILS.

Everything Bigger is NOT Better~ A laugh for the day

Yesterday I had a frightening experience: I looked at myself all at once in a magnifying mirror. This should be illegal if you are over the age of 40.

Now I am going to be brave and share a topic on personal grooming with you. I know what you’re thinking:

It’s not that bad. Here goes~ I get my eyebrows waxed about every 6 weeks. In between I do a bit of plucking to keep myself from looking like Eugene Levy.

This maintenance had previously been done via a good pair of Tweezerman’s and an ancient compact shaving mirror belonging to Mr. Décor. It was the perfect size to zero in on a limited viewing area. Indeed it was so small that it was impossible to look at oneself all at once.

A problem had arisen in that Mr. Décor is traveling for work quite often and taking his mirror with him. I had to resort to sitting in the bright sunshine with a regular compact mirror and a heavy dose of grumbling.

Now Mr. Décor is one thoughtful man. Oh my friends he takes such good care of me.

On Monday I received a surprise package in the mail. It contained a huge light up magnification mirror. I immediately washed my face, plugged that puppy in and….

WAS COMPLETEY HORRIFIED!

Who was that wrinkled woman with the ginormous pores?

No amount of personal affirmations can ever remove what I saw from my mind.

So back into the box it went.

It had sounded like a really good idea. Why I had even wished for a wall mounted mirror on occasion.

As they say, be careful, very careful of what you wish for.

Because the reality of some wishes just might scare you speechless.

Painting Cabinets or A Very Slow and Tedious Job

I have no gorgeously beautiful post so instead I am showing a picture of what I wished darling daughters bathroom looked like.

In the past two weeks I have created a jolly St. Patrick’s Day environment with a mouthwatering corned beef dinner, an Easter feast with all the trimmings, a birthday wonderland and now am quickly moving forward to celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary this week.

I want to be thankful for the small woman inside of me who keeps jumping up and saying “Remember to enjoy the day…make a memory of this moment.” But as I struggle to write yet another art history paper, shoot a still life, make dinner, attend soccer practice… in the moment when I am SO tired and just want to get the stupid stupid cabinets painted already I want to tell her to “Hush her mouth!”

It must be Monday. :)

Focusing on the positive I can report that I have all of darling daughters cabinet trim painted and am now working on the doors. I am loving the look so far!

The old vanity top will be replaced at the end of the week and two new faucets will be installed. I purchased some clear round glass cabinet knobs at Hobby Lobby. In a funny coincidence every picture of “gray bathroom cabinets” I liked on Pinterest this morning showed the same hardware. I guess great minds think alike.

The bad thing about builders grade oak cabinets is that the wood grain still comes through. I know there are grain filler products but gah~ they look like so much work. I might try it on the kitchen cabinets. But for now, I need to roll on another coat of paint.

Can’t wait for more show and less tell!
