For those of us who remember the LAST time brown was a hot color (think 1970's refrigerator!) check out the beautiful browns that are available for decorative purposes. These brown toile transferware plates add class and richness to your decor. The top one has really cute motif of a boy getting into a rowboat on a lake in front of an English country house. The middle one is very striking exotic motif with a bird and roses. Many years after Rachel Ashwell published her books Shabby Chic is still very hot for classy comfortable decor. The words "Shabby Chic" have become synonymous with the love of decorating with time-worn vintage objects. With pale pinks, lavenders, spring green, sunny yellows and lots of roses the look is wonderfully soothing. Vintage dishes fit into this style beautifully and allow you to make the look your own. In the September issue of Vanity Fair there was a long profile on Cath Kidston of England. Black toile is still VERY fashionable for decorating punch. It's hardest to find and very popular.The first plate below is really cool because it has so many fun elements: horse, dog, English scene, fruit edge trim. By contrast the second is simple elegance with a black trellis on a white background. Next is a 1920's Wedgwood toile plate featuring a pasture scene and nice acorn and oak leaf edge trim. Antique porcelain from Limoges France represents a high point for design and elegance. I ran across this amazing set with incredible detail. The pieces are circa 1890s A.K. (A. Klingenberg) Limoges France bone china. The motif on each piece is slightly different which makes me think this was very exclusive. The design has butterflies, poppies, gorgeous colored foliage, and a bird with gold trim. These pieces are highly usable or would be wonderful for display. Just stunning. Succulent fruit motifs are another timeless decorative motif. Dishes with apples, oranges, pears, plums, and my favorite, cherries, are a wonderful way to achieve this. The first is a very cool WWII era Czech scalloped edged plate with a 3-D raised orange and leaves. The second is spetacular rich turquoise Italian majolica plate with hand painted white cherries, pears, and pomegranates. The third is a cute shape vintage California pottery pitcher with 3-D plums on one side and strawberries on the other. Texture is an important aspect in any decorating scheme. Dishes are a wonderful way to achieve this. Just hanging a dish on the wall immediately brings in some texture, but when the dish itself is textured you get double the effect. A style of dish called majolica has this depth and often is elegant and whimsical. The shapes can be unusual or the actual shape of something found in nature such as a leaf. Historically majolica was the name for the type of earthenware and glaze used. For decorative purposes it now describes items like the following depicting a tomato, oak leaves, retro flowers, or a berry basket tray. The first is a vibrant red textured tomato plate with green stem. The second is a rich fall plate with layers of oak leaves. The third is a vintage basket weave plate with green leaves and berries. Square plates add interest and definition to wall, cabinet, or table settings. The first plate below is a nice large piece with a stylized black and white drawing of a rose. It was made in Italy. The next is an amazing old toile handled tray. It is black transferware hand colored with pink, green, yellow, and shiny copper metallic accents. Really funky. Men, women, and a dog stroll through a park in front of a castle. It has neat rose and castle trim. It was made in Staffordshire England. The next is a cool plate that just screams of elegance in an era gone by. Very retro with the faux woven gray background and the muted pastels in the roses. I love it. It was also made in England. Dish edges are like fringe on a rug or crown molding on a room. They add depth and extra interest to the main design. The edge detail on some of the older dishes is just amazing. The first plate below is almost 100 years old and has a wonderful 3-D majolica type bramble detail with 3 different floral designs interspersed with leaves. It was made by Wedgwood with hand coloring on a center transfer. The second plate is also very old. This cream colored plate has a raised border of roses and fruit. It is edged with hand painted blue accents in a scoll pattern. Another very old plate with a darling victorian edge design is the green toile shown third which probably dates to the 1920’s. Toile transferware people will delight you. From antique to contemporary part of the charm of the toile transferware style of dishes are little romantic scenic vignettes of men, women, children, and animals. The first plate detail depicts a brown Colonial scene with plantation, southern belles, and tricorn hatted gentlemen. The second detail is from a blue antique plate with the figures overlooking an exotic dreamlike river with a castle in the background. The third is a detail from a black and white teapot with a man playing the flute for his elegant french lady companion. In the forth green plate detail the Stratford Stage has arrived! Dishes are reflections of an era. Lovely pieces of domestic history. This charming retro pattern is so 1950's yet still very feminine. The stylized pink roses and the black leaves are really sharp. Similar to depression glass these dishes may have been premiums offered at the grocery or in the detergent box!! One thing for sure is that they are rare. A black angular coffee cup--so cool!
